Good Omens S2 fic recs
Need something good to read?
Tumblr media
it's written all over by @et-in-arkadia, who never fails to grab me by the throat. Aziraphale comes back that very night and gives Crowley exactly what he wants...sort of. (E)
A Million Times by @chamyl. A breathless, tender reconciliation with excellent Muriel in. (E)
Not for All My Little Words by @mia-ugly and soft_october. For everyone who wants to see Aziraphale apologize. A lot. (E)
I'll Wait by @copperplatebeech. Could've chosen any of a dozen of Copper's sharp, shrewd pieces. Whether you like them funny, aching, hot, or tender, she's got your number -- often all at once. This one's (T)
A Bit of a Gray Area by @princip1914. Look, I for one was waiting for bad angry standing-up sex in a bathroom. The fact that it's one of my favorite authors providing it is the icing on my eccles cakes. (E)
(Do eccles cakes have icing? Is the E in eccles capitalized? I am not doing research for this Tumblr post.)
Five First Kisses And One [5+1 Things] by @werpiper. If you need to believe that there were many kisses before That One, this is a great story to enjoy, and if you need to believe they were banging through history, @werpiper is a great writer to get acquainted with. (E)
in the french fashion by @giddygeek. Were you wanting that 1941 "something I can do for you" hot, romantic, in-character, and intellectually intriguing? Step right up. (E)
the soft animal of your body by @focusfixated. A short but powerful take on the ox rib situation. (E)
An Invitation to Dance by @lavraiemonchichi. Another short take. What if the apology dance, but kinky? (E)
Covenant of Salt by @twwings. Make it long, make it deep, do it in the dark. Hard, complicated like fine wine. Yeah, that's the way I like it. Get acquainted with twings, she's dynamite in this or any other fandom (ask me about her MCU novel!).(E)
the two shepherds of uruk by @inkatesbush. WHAT a story, OMG. A slow burn in the context of the Tower of Babel. These two hardly know one another, but they'll learn, oh, they'll learn. Agile prose, storytelling like a blow to the solar plexus. (E)
White on White by @twilightcitysky. What could be a more appropriate erotic awakening for Aziraphale than a sad wank in Heaven? Well, I could tell you, but you'd have more fun if you read this story and its sequels. (E)
The Butterfly Effect by @plaidadder. A master storyteller at the top of their game, this Doctor Who crossover works even if you don't know Doctor Who and aren't excited about crossovers. Why? Because what could be more satisfying than putting Aziraphale and Crowley in a time loop until they work out their nonsense? I'll tell you what: humor, stunningly romantic prose, Revelations-inspired eldritch horrors, and happy endings for everyone. (T)
Have fun and don't forget to leave comments!

The Sniffles
tenth doctor x reader (ambiguous relationship)
Summary: In which you hide being sick from the Doctor
Tumblr media
You stumbled into the TARDIS control room, very obviously sick, even if you refused to admit it. Companions didn’t get sick. Plus, you were still functional. Mostly.
“I was thinking we could travel back in time today,” the Doctor said in his usually cheery voice, moving about the console with boundless energy, “Maybe Victorian England? Or the moon launch! Definitely the moon launch,” he grinned, turning to you for approval.
You nodded and the Doctor didn’t need much more confirmation than that. He ran around the control room, piloting the ship in a chaotic manner.
“It’s even more brilliant up close, I promise,” he rambled on, still running about the ship. “One of the greatest feats of humankind if you ask me.”
You sniffled as quietly as possible, rubbing your nose on the back of your sleeve. The Doctor didn’t pay any mind to you, still rambling on about the moon. You wished your nose wasn’t so stuffy, you wished that you weren’t exhausted and sick.
“Very characteristic of you lot to see a rock in the sky and decide to venture to it. It’s like that guy who climbed Mount Everest, what was his name?” he frowned, momentarily pausing his chaotic movements.
“George Mallory?” you ventured. The Doctor snapped loudly in your direction, a big grin plastered on his face.
“That one! He wanted to climb Everest because-”
“Because it’s there,” you said simultaneously, though in a significantly more congested voice than the Doctor. He referenced it a lot, usually as an example of humanity's stupidity. If the Doctor noticed your parroting, he didn’t show it.
“That essentially sums up how humans feel about the moon. Great big, strange rock in the sky, you better go claim it.”
You nodded along, your focus slowly slipping as he continued to talk. You were already so exhausted and you hadn’t even done much yet. Your head felt heavier than a bowling ball and your sinuses were clogged up beyond belief. At this point, you just wanted to crawl back into bed and never leave again.
Sensing that you had stopped paying attention, the Doctor halted his emphatic rambling.“What’s wrong?” he asked, moving over to you and crossing his arms while frowning slightly. Usually you at least feigned interest in his ramblings.
“Nothing,” you lied, though it wasn’t very convincing. You didn’t have the energy to lie to the Doctor right now.
His frown deepened as he leaned closer to you, examining you like some alien gadget he couldn’t figure out.
Without warning he reached his hand out, resting the back of his hand against your forehead. Mostly out of instinct, you pulled away from him with a frown. “Hey!” you snapped, swatting his hand away.
“You’re burning up!” he retorted, his voice cross.
“It’s warm in here.”
“No, it’s not. You’re always complaining about it being cold,” he pointed out, challenging you to deny it. Unfortunately, he was entirely right. He kept the TARDIS much colder than you would prefer. You just stayed silent since you didn’t have anything to retaliate with. Unfortunately for your argument, your silence was punctuated with a sniffle followed by a suppressed cough.
“Come on, back to bed,” the Doctor sighed, tilting his head in the direction of your room.
“I’m fine!” you argued again, which would have been much more convincing if it wasn’t accompanied by a series of sneezes.
“Are you sure about that?” the Doctor huffed, looking at you condescendingly.
“It’s just a little cold.” you sniffled slightly, fighting the urge to sneeze again.
“Mhm, even if it is ‘just a little cold’ you need to get some rest,” he chastised, guiding you out of the control room.
“I’m perfectly fine,” you repeated but didn’t protest as he guided you back to your room.
“Sure you are,” the Doctor rolled his eyes behind your back. Stubborn as ever.
He guided you through your door and into your bedroom, pulling back the covers for you and gesturing for you to get in bed.
“I’m going to go grab you medicine, if you move I’m going to be very upset,” he emphasized, tucking the blankets around you. You sniffled again and nodded your understanding. Frankly, you were too tired to keep fighting him on this. Maybe a little nap wouldn’t be a bad thing.
The Doctor left the room to grab some medicine and a warm cup of tea and honey. When he returned, you were still bundled up in the blankets, sniffling quietly.
He handed you the medicine and a glass of water, watching as you took it. When you were done, he swapped the glass of water for the tea.
“It will help you feel better, I promise,” he urged, wrapping your hands around the warm mug. The steam wafting from the cup was so enticing he didn’t have to ask you twice. You drank the tea happily, the warm liquid heating your body and clearing your sinuses and throat a bit. When you were done, the Doctor took the cup back from you.
“Why would you hide something like this from me?” he said, his eyebrows knit together. He was genuinely concerned about you, and he would be lying if he said it didn’t hurt him a bit that you hadn’t felt safe enough to let him know you were sick.
“I didn’t want to be a burden,” you whispered, frowning slightly.
“You’re not a burden,” he responded, shaking his head without hesitation.
“What about the moon landing?”
“It will still be there when you are feeling better.”
“And you?”
“I’ll also be here,” he smiled warmly, rubbing the back of your hand with his thumb comfortingly. All of time and space could wait, right now all that mattered to him was getting his favorite companion feeling better.
“Now, get some rest. Please,” he whispered, tucking the blankets around you again, ensuring you were safely bundled up in bed. When he was done, he gently kissed your forehead before getting up to leave.
“Doctor?”
“Hm?” He hummed, his hand hovering over your door handle.
“Will you stay with me?” you whispered. A grin took over the Doctor’s face. He slipped his shoes off quickly before practically leaping into your bed. He was always game for a good cuddle.
“I don’t wanna get you sick,” you argued as he snuggled in next to you, opening his arms as an invitation.
“Superior Time Lord immune system,” he shrugged, beckoning you into his arms. You obliged, wrapping your arms around his slender middle.
“Not everything Time Lord is superior,” you grumbled, burning your face in his chest. In response, he wrapped his arms tighter around you. “Except maybe the cuddles,” you murmured, nuzzling slightly against his chest. Blimey, he was a good cuddler. He chuckled and placed another gentle kiss on your head.
You sniffled again and sneezed against him before quickly apologizing. At this point, you were bound to get him sick too.
“Don’t worry about it,” he cooed, brushing his thumb against your cheek comfortingly. “It’s gonna take more than the sniffles to get rid of me,” he reassured. Getting sick from you was the least of his worries right now.
“Now, get some rest,” he whispered into your hair, resting his face on the top of your head. You didn’t protest this time, you were way too comfortable. Happy and safe in his arms you found yourself quickly drifting off to sleep.
The Doctor was soon to follow, exhausted from all of your travels, though he would never admit it.

flux adjacent fic recs
in media res by wreckageofstars (3k, 1 chapter, gen) summary: “Well,” she said. “Now you know what the mattress is for.” Dan shifted. “And the trampoline?” “Best not ask about the trampoline.” //I think this is probably the first Dan pov fic I ever read, and it’s absolutely brilliant. This author gets the character voices down so perfectly it’s unreal, and the whole thing is just so wonderful to see from Dan’s outsider perspective. It’s set in the immediate aftermath of Once, Upon Time, and it does a fantastic job of exploring the impact of what happened in that episode – both from a whump perspective and an emotional one. Angsty, but also funny in the worst kind of way – someone please go give Yaz a break, she REALLY needs one. Anyway, it’s great, everyone go read it right now.
Hearts of Stone by weirdpug (previously xhonia) (1k, 1 chapter, thoschei) summary: The Doctor loses herself. The Master finds her. //Ohhh this one this one, it’s SO awesome – it’s one of those fics that does really cool things with the formatting? Which works great here, because it’s a weeping angel!13 fic and wow, wow! Extremely awesome indeed, and just beautifully written – the prose is just so full of character, even when the Doctor is losing herself and it’s so well done.
Divination by WalkerLister (6k, 1 chapter, gen) summary: “There was a name for someone similar to me once. They called them the Valeyard. You can call me that, if you like. I quite like it, it’s suitably eerie. Little bit of drama never hurt anyone.” //Right, so we all remember what happened when War of the Sontarans aired…we got that ‘next time’ trailer of Once Upon Time…and all collectively lost our minds over the inverted dark coat. Since then, I feel like everyone has been finding really creative ways to get it into fanfics, and this is a wonderful example. And, well, if the promise of dark coat!13 wasn’t enough, this fic is just an absolutely fascinating look at the concept of the Valeyard in the context of the fobwatch from Flux, but focused on Yaz and her relationship with/perception of the Doctor. It’s such a good concept and so so wonderfully done! (also, if you’re a fan of thasmin, this author has a ton of stuff, so definitely go check it all out! For the less thasmin-inclined folks, I highly recommend Ipesity, which is one of my favourite post-TTC fics)
three points where two lines meet by Ymae (4k, 1 chapter, gen) summary: The Doctor tries to get those memories back, and breaks herself, bit by bit. //Oh man. This fic. I still remember when this one first posted and hoooooo boy, it is a hell of a gut-punch and absolutely wrenched my heart right out of my chest but HHHHHHHHH wow!! WOW. Genuinely, I think this fic rewrote my brain a little bit. It's set in the immediate aftermath of Once, Upon Time where the Doctor makes some very unwise decisions about trying to tug at her timeline and it's absolutely incredible. Very angsty, very whumpy, and full of a HUGE amount of the Doctor messing with timelines and very visceral, tangible descriptions of her timesense. It is such a treat, guys. And if you like this one and want something with similar vibes, I also highly recommend this post-flux fic by the same author!
Sheer Poetry! by Papapaldi (57k, 5 chapters, gen) summary: Trapped within her own mind, the Doctor travels through an impossible house, with everyone she has ever been locked inside. Her body is an unresponsive, useless bag of flesh somewhere far and away in reality. The part of her brain that she knows, where her past resides, sits somewhere else entirely within the old machine. The Ravagers eat, buried memories beckon, and the Doctor's faith is shaken to its core. She will never be the same – but that's what she's all about, right? Incredible change. //oh my days. THIS FIC, guys - look, I see the word count, I know, I know. This fic is a serious undertaking, but like so many things in life it is soooooo so worth it. Bucket loads of absolutely ASTOUNDING imagery, more references to Lungbarrow and Timewyrm Revelation than you can shake a stick at, BUT you don't need to have read those stories at all to enjoy this absolutely fantastic saga (put it like this - I've not read those books, and I had a whale of a time). Incredibly poetic, a little nonsensical in the best kind of way (it IS a mindscape fic) but startlingly funny and so beautifully in character. I laughed, I cried. This fic is just a love letter to everything Doctor Who, weaving all of canon into this beautiful, cohesive tapestry. I highly recommend. (and, if you're hungry for more and want tpotd content, there's an excellent sequel as well)
every step i choose to take (begins to set the world aflame) by SleepyMaddy (12k, 1 chapter, thoschei) summary: In a spaceport lost in a remote quadrant of interstellar space, a Doctor who doesn’t know herself anymore runs into a Master who doesn’t know himself yet // Ok so the sheer concept of this one ALONE is absolutely brilliant – the Doctor, escaping from the Division and half out of her head, bumps into the Master, who’s not long regenerated from Missy. And, guys. It’s fascinating. Seeing the Master right at the start, before he finds out everything that comes to define him in this era, and then having him meet a version of the Doctor who is quite a lot further along than him and just completely out of it? It’s like catnip to me, guys. And, of course, it’s all helped by the fact that the writing is absolutely brilliant – the characters are just absolutely spot on, which is quite an incredible feat seeing as they are both in very different places to where we see them in the show, yet they still manage to ring true throughout the whole thing. And also the mindscape imagery? The psychic whump? The emotional gut-punch that is the entire fic? Absolutely unparalleled. (also, if you’re a spydoc fan? Just help yourself out and read this author’s entire set of works, because it’s all fantastic)
see me bare my teeth for you by picnokinesis (16k, 1 chapter, gen) summary: “Do you know your mission?” //This is a bit of a cheeky self-rec, but, in my defence, if you're looking for flux fics, then I think you'll enjoy this one. I wrote it in the week after Village of the Angels aired, and it's basically all my thoughts and theories about what was going to happen in Survivors of the Flux thrown into a 16k oneshot. I was...mostly wrong HAHA but I’m still really proud of it. If you like division!doctor, then this one is for you
we're only dreaming (tell me who i am) by SpaceBetweenGalaxies (2k, 1 chapter, gen) summary: more the-memory-house-is-Lungbarrow clowning //ok, so if you were like me when flux was airing and absolutely lost your MIND over the illogical house which was a bit too on the nose regarding Lungbarrow related things, then THIS FIC IS FOR YOU. Absolutely brilliantly done, with some gorgeous imagery that I'm still thinking about to this day, and just a wonderfully unsettling exploration of the Doctor and how she picks at those cut off memories in the aftermath of the Flux
the stars are bound to change by emptypockets (9k, 1 chapter, gen) summary: Being trisected across the universe has unexpected consequences for the Doctor, and Yaz is tasked with the responsibility of keeping her awake. //ohhhhhh this fic is so wonderful!! It's that weird sweet spot of 'soft angst', where it hits where it hurts but at the same time the whole thing feels like it's wrapping you in a warm blanket. Augh!! Such a lovely portrayal of the Doctor and Yaz's dynamic - I adore how this author writes these two so much. An absolutely lovely (but angsty!) character exploration, with a healthy dose of whump and sleepiness on the side. What more could you want?
Everything by rowanthestrange (24k, 13 chapters, thasmin) summary: In which Yaz wants to know everything, and the Doctor finally wants that too. //Ok, so full disclosure, I don't read that much thasmin, but this fic, guys. It's just gorgeous. A beautifully written exploration of Yaz and her relationship with the Doctor in the aftermath of Flux, which explores the years Yaz spent in the past and how that changed her; the Doctor grappling with her identity issues and how that's changed her; as well as all sorts of other wonderful things besides. Another fic that had tears streaming down my face (the TARDIS chapter got me...). It's such a poignant, emotional fic, and it's very focused on character in a way that I really adore. If you like thasmin, this is an absolute must-read. If you're not a fan of thasmin, I recommend it anyway (- signed: a thoschei shipper) because it's just such a brilliant portrayal of these two.

The Problem of Susan Fic Recs
For many reasons, The Last Battle is probably the most contentious addition to the Narnia canon. The standout, though, has to be the infamous Problem of Susan, wherein the Pevensie children are all killed in a train crash and brought to Narnia 2 Electric Boogaloo aka heaven, then declare that Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia because of her interest in “lipsticks and nylons”. Hardly any time is spent on this, but the implications have been the ground for a lot of argument and discussion. What exactly would happen to Susan, and should it have happened? Over the years, dozens of fic writers have thrown their hats in the ring and weighed in on the subject, making the Problem of Susan almost a prism for the fandom: everyone shines through it a bit differently, resulting in a wide spectrum. Here’s some of the highlights under the cut.
http://shedletsky.com/blog/the-god-who-loves-you
Starting with the fic that coined the term, written by Neil Gaiman himself, this fic is a reflection and deconstruction of the idea that Susan would be able to find Narnia again by delving into the trauma that the experience of losing all her family at once as well as the social injustices that a young woman of her time would’ve faced, something that the narrative of The Last Battle never really addresses. It took off for a reason, as it presents a lot of good food for thought, but it’s also got some pretty weird shit that can feel like it’s conflating adulthood with edginess. Well worth a read for all the points it raises, but if you’re fond of canon you probably won’t like the way it takes a hammer to it.
Now this one is exactly what you’d want to read if you wanted some feel-good time. This story is probably the closest to how C S Lewis would’ve written Susan’s return to Narnia, detailing her rediscovering all the things she put away as well as what led up to her rejecting Narnia in the first place. It falls more to the end of being almost uncritical of canon, with the focus on Susan basically having the same sort of religious rediscovery that C S Lewis himself had in his life. Because of how she was treated in canon, that can be pretty frustrating, but the ending feels nothing short of joyous.
Swinging back to the other end of the spectrum, this fic is very critical of the idea of The Last Battle being a pretty happy ending for everyone, unambiguously stating that life is always worth living for all the Pevensie kids. It explores what their lives could’ve been like if they didn’t die, being a rebuttal of C S Lewis’ themes rather than a continuation of them while feeling equally as happy as the fic directly above.
And this story feels like a midway point between the above two. It dives really deep into the emotional damage that Susan would’ve suffered before and after the train crash in some absolutely gorgeous prose, showing both her and Aslan with great sympathy while maintaining that what happened to her is not a punishment in any way. Bittersweet and very, very good.
Heading back towards the more critical end of the spectrum, this fic presents a Susan who is not interested in finding Narnia again, only her family. She is very much a character straight out of an ancient myth rather than a teen trying to make sense of a senseless situation here, filled with determination as much as desperation. It’s probably the closest fic on here to having something close to a plot as well as a character study, with the exception of The Queen’s Return and one other:
Being a crossover with what’s pretty much the antithesis of the Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials, it’s probably easy for you to guess which side of the spectrum this story falls on. It’s more of a HDM story than a Narnia one, but the two worlds blend together surprisingly well, and it gives us a rare look into a Susan who’s lived decades of her life when the story picks up. She’s pretty much the Professor and it is fascinating, as is everything left to interpretation by this gem of a fic that is ambiguous yet deeply satisfying.
¡And here’s Susan as a Doctor Who companion! This isn’t directly a Narnia story so much as it is one about two people much older than they look mourning the loss of their worlds, with a Susan who is a queen wise beyond her years. Reading it is like taking an ice shower. It doesn’t hold back on the grief, and as a result it manages to feel honest as it reaches a warm ending.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/24311
Despite also being a crossover, this is in some ways the opposite of touch the sky with two arms. Susan is more of an everyday young woman than a queen, and [SLIGHT SPOILERS] Narnia itself does feature directly. But y’know, that’s part of what makes fandom so interesting. Not everyone is going to have the same take on everything, and the ending of this leans more happy than melancholy.
¿A shipping fic that’s also a crossover with Peter Pan that features neither Neverland or Narnia? Yes, this one probably has the least to do with Narnia or Aslan, but it tells a very compelling story about living life and growing up, something that isn’t perfect but can be good if you find someone you want to spend your life with. Susan Pevensie and Wendy Darling are a really good couple, pinky promise.
Technically more a series of ensemble oneshots, but Susan features very prominently in a lot of them, and they will make you feel every feeling that everything else on this list might’ve given you. Satisfaction, devastation, simple joy, just go give it a shot.

"And then the Doctor’s extremities exploded into dazzling golden light. Clara felt the energy shooting through her and realized that, if she could still feel pain, she would probably be in agony, maybe dead. Instead, she felt nothing but beautiful warmth."
Absolutely got inspired by this gorgeous concept of a fic: The Mad Idea by TheSaddleman/ @anotheruserwithnoname
What a beautiful, beautiful fic🥹 The image of Clara embracing the Doctor as he regenerates would not leave my mind and so I just had to draw it🤩

does anyone have any post-s2 fix-it recs in which aziraphale isn’t made the bad guy? i keep seeing all these stories where aziraphale is begging for crowley’s forgiveness and it takes time for crowley to accept the apologies and aziraphale was 100% in the wrong etc etc. i can’t seem to find anything that deals with the fact that aziraphale did something brave and moral in wanting to make Heaven a better place, and as an aziraphale kin i’m really struggling to engage with the fan base. if anyone has any fics for aziraphale defenders PLEASE drop them i am begging.

The Prettiest Alien
tenth doctor x reader (fairly ambiguous relationship)
Summary: In which the Doctor gets a skirt
A/N: he'd look amazing in a skirt, fight me on it
Tumblr media
The Doctor loved little shops. They were probably his favorite of all the things in the vast universe. You could find just about anything in a shop, even things you didn’t know you needed. Every time he passed a little shop he had to fight the urge to go in. You never knew what treasures could be waiting inside, his favorite coat had come from a shop on the West side of London. His life would have been miserable if he hadn’t gone into that shop.
Imagine his surprise and joy when the two of you stumbled across a little village full of small shops. The two of you spent the whole day there, just walking about. You spent hours exploring the village, peering into the windows. You would go into a few, browsing all kinds of goods.
As you passed a shop window, the Doctor had an unmistakable look of joy and childish excitement. You looked into the window to discover a shop entirely devoted to rubber ducks. The Doctor sprinted inside without waiting for you, already gaping at all of the themed ducks. He held one up to you as you walked in, pointing enthusiastically at its purple wizard hat.
“Did you know the original rubber duck didn’t even float? It was solid,” he explained as he pulled his glasses out of his coat to look at the various ducks better. He studied them the same way that he did the various alien languages on the TARDIS console that you couldn’t read.
Later, he ended up rummaging around his coat pockets for Earth money, making you hold the various coins as he pulled them from his endless pockets, trying to find enough to buy a pair of duck-patterned socks.
Really, you were just happy to just trail behind him, looking at the bits and bobs as he rambled on about everything and nothing.
After a few hours of browsing, the Doctor stopped in front of a little boutique. He stared at the display with wide eyes, clearly admiring the mannequin. You peered over his shoulder to see what he was looking at. The window display was small with just one outfit styled for passersby to look at. The simple, sleek mannequin was dressed up in a dusty pink tulle skirt paired with a flowery blouse. You couldn’t help but think it was entirely Parisian.
“Let’s go in!” You smiled at the Doctor, noticing his interest in the display. You didn't think much of it initially, considering you had been looking at the display with the same interest.
The Doctor momentarily blushed before following you into the shop silently, keeping his head down in a very uncharacteristic manner. He followed you as you wandered through the shop, your hands brushing over the fancy and expensive garments.
“I’ve always loved looking at stuff like this,” you giggled as you held up a fancy garment, your fingers rubbing against the silky fabric. The Doctor simply nodded, his silence confusing to you. He was usually extremely talkative, even when he didn’t need to be. Usually, he would be making some comment about the fabric - telling you the strange origins of the print or explaining how silk was made in more detail than you were typically comfortable with. Instead, he was just standing there awkwardly as you chattered on every now and then. It was a dramatic change from just a few short hours ago and it left you wondering what was wrong.
Deciding he was just uncomfortable in such a fancy store, you suggested that the two of you move on to others. The Doctor blushed, his eyes darting around the room before nodding.
On the way out, you passed the rack of dusty pink skirts that had been in the display window. The Doctor halted, his slender fingers momentarily brushing against the puffy tulle. You stopped as well, taking in his gentle expression as he looked upon the skirts.
That’s when it hit you. The Doctor wasn’t uncomfortable in the shop because he felt out of place or even out of disinterest. He wanted the skirt. The Doctor wasn’t one to ask for things, especially unconventional things.
“Do you wanna wait outside? I’m gonna grab a few things,” you suggested with a soft smile.
The Doctor pulled himself from his thoughts. He quickly withdrew his hand from the skirt, almost as if he was afraid it would burn him. His head hung in embarrassment, hoping you hadn’t paid too much attention to him.
“Yeah, I’ll just head across the street, I think there’s a sweets shop,” he said, rushing his words. You nodded in agreement and he practically darted out the door, speed walking away from you anxiously. You laughed to yourself before turning your attention to the skirts.
They really were beautiful, and they even had pockets! Donna would be proud, she was always an advocate for things having pockets, especially after her chaotically disastrous wedding. You flicked through the skirts, looking for one that was relatively the Doctor’s size. It wasn’t hard, he had such a slender waist.
You picked out the skirt and carried it over to the counter, handing it to the lady proudly.
“Fantastic choice,” she smiled as she wrung you up, “did your boyfriend pick it out for you?” She asked, gesturing her head to the door, clearly referring to the Doctor.
You shook your head and handed her your card, “no, it’s for him,” you said simply. It wasn’t that big of a deal to you. Thankfully, it wasn’t for the cashier either.
“It will look great on him,” she said, carefully wrapping the skirt in some tissue paper before sliding it into a bag and handing it over to you. You smiled down at the parcel, feeling a warmth in your heart. You thanked her before rushing out of the store to find the Doctor, clutching the bag to your chest protectively.
He didn’t question your bag, especially since you had told him you were going to get something. He just assumed you had treated yourself to something nice.
As the two of you walked back to the TARDIS at the end of the day he finally gathered the courage to ask, “What did you end up getting?”
You followed his eyeline to the bag in your hands. He was looking down at it with thinly veiled interest, clearly excited to see what was inside.
“When we get inside I can show you,” you offered, holding the door to the ship open for him. He nodded as he walked inside. You followed him, setting the bag down on the console. The Doctor was doing a rubbish job of hiding his excitement as you pulled your coat off and got comfortable. The way he was eyeing the bag reminded you of an eager kid waiting to open Christmas presents.
Finally, you pulled the skirt out of the bag, unwrapping the tissue paper so you could hold it up.
“It’s beautiful-” the Doctor exhaled, looking at the skirt with admiration.
“It’s for you,” you explained, handing the skirt over to him. He took the skirt from you, holding it in his hands with a delicacy that was extremely rare for the Time Lord.
“For me?” He asked, clearly confused. He looked down at the skirt in his hands, his face a mix of conflicting emotions.
“I could tell you liked it and you deserved a present,” you smiled.
“You got me a skirt?” he asked, looking up at you with wide eyes.
“I thought you might like it…” you whispered, suddenly worried that you had misinterpreted his interest in the skirt.
“You’re ok with me wearing a skirt?” he asked, his eyes almost watery as he said it.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” you frowned. “If it was an ugly skirt maybe I’d have issues with it, but it’s a really pretty skirt.”
“You got me a skirt,” the Doctor whispered, looking back down at it with a loving smile.
You laughed lightly, shaking your head. “D’you wanna try it on? I had to guess on your size.”
The Doctor nodded, quickly unzipping the skirt. He didn’t even bother with taking his trousers off before slipping it on. He buttoned the skirt and looked down at his new piece of clothing, grinning like a madman.
“It looks great, even with the trousers,” you chuckled, honestly just happy to see the Doctor this overjoyed. You had seen him happy plenty of times, but this was a different kind of happy.
“Really?” he asked, almost self-consciously.
“Prettiest Time Lord I’ve ever seen,” you teased, leaning forward to kiss his cheek softly.
“I’m the only Time Lord you’ve ever seen… Well, besides the Master.”
“Fine, the prettiest alien I’ve been. By far,” you smiled, adjusting his tie. The Doctor’s cheeks slightly reddened at your compliment, which was a rare occurrence. Usually, he was the one making you a blushing mess.
“I really mean it,” you whispered earnestly. The skirt really did suit him.
The Doctor grinned, kissing you quickly, his own way of saying “thank you”
After that, the Doctor started wearing his new skirt all the time. You really loved when you would walk into the control room and he’d be sitting on the floor like a child, the skirt pooling out beneath him as he worked on the console. You loved seeing his mismatched socks sticking over the top of his Converse, the perfectly chaotic pairing for such an elegant skirt.
You ended up buying him another one. And another one after that. One needs variety, after all.
