Season 4 cast photos and updated character bios have been posted on FX’s WWDITS website! See below for the bios:
Guillermo: Returning from London, "Guillermo," played by Harvey Guillén, finds there’s a baby Colin Robinson toddling around their dilapidated house, and he’s the only one who seems worried. But Guillermo also seems to have picked up a little swagger during his time away. Between his adventures in London and his work as Nadja’s new accountant, Guillermo now guards a secret or two of his own.
Nandor: "Nandor the Relentless," played by Kayvan Novak, is a fierce Ottoman warrior once known for pillaging villages and turning the Euphrates red with blood. But after an “Eat, Prey, Love” journey to his ancestral home in Al Quolanudar, he knows it’s love he wants, not war. With help from Guillermo and a Djinn, he goes looking for his bride.
Nadja: After a frustrating stint at the International Vampiric Council, "Nadja," played by Natasia Demetriou, returns from London with a new mission: to run her own business. She has a thirst not just for blood, but for power, money and vampire-oriented entertainment. But can she succeed where so many others have failed, or will she find truth in the old adage about the food and beverage business: that the best way to make a small fortune is to start with a big one?
The Guide: Acerbic, imperious and floating, "the Guide," portrayed by Kristen Schaal, has assisted every Vampiric Council since 1759. But now Nadja wants to remodel the very institution to which the Guide has devoted her life. With her many wraith helpers, the Guide puts up a strong resistance before realizing that the most important person in the club is always the doorman.
Laszlo: "Laszlo Cravensworth," played by Matt Berry, has his life turned upside down when he becomes Baby Colin’s self-appointed caretaker. Nevertheless, his purpose is clear: he must raise an interesting child. But what can one man do in such an uphill fight against nature? Sometimes the only course of action with a childlike Baby Colin is to exploit his gifts before the kid grows out of them.
Colin: After his 100th birthday/deathday, "Colin Robinson," played by Mark Proksch, is back as a Dilbert-looking newborn. But this is no ordinary baby. He grows rapidly, has great physical gifts and absorbs a number of surprising skills. But the question remains: has the Colin Robinson caterpillar truly turned into a butterfly, or is the fact of his boring background just too much to overcome?

Fantasy Recommendations Wanted
I already have 28 unread books to read before I purchase anything else, nevertheless, I want some very specific recommendations on fantasy books!
I have enjoyed lots of fantasy in the past (Pratchett being the bridge for ten year old me from kid books to non-kid books before the age of YA) but 99% of the books shelved in a bookshop Fantasy/Sci-Fi section leave me cold.
My absolute favourite fantasy novels are:
The His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman
The Earthsea series by Ursula LeGuin
Little, Big by John Crowley
Lud in the Mist by Hope Mirless
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye by AS Byatt
The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro
Both of Susanna Clarke’s novels (Piranesi and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel)
The Once and Future King by TH White
Also, not a novel, but Jim Henson’s The Storyteller series is the epitome of fairytale storytelling as far as I’m concerned, where everything happens after a year and a day or in a week with two Sundays or to a seventh son of a seventh son. The story The Luck Child in particular still makes me well up.
The issue is, that although I absolutely adore those books listed above, that’s about as far as it goes, almost everything else I try does nothing for me. I’ve read all of Pratchett, Gaiman and Tolkien too and enjoy them (The Watch books, Troll Bridge and The Hobbit being my favourite of each). I like the first few Robin Hobb books, I like the bits I choose to like from Narnia, I liked the first Scott Lynch book and I liked/detested The Magicians series in equal measure.
So, what am I missing? I much prefer whimsy to grizzled be-stubbled men with a grudge, I much prefer a magic system to be based on endearing nonsense rather than maths and physics and if I’ve not listed a major series/trilogy of some kind then I’ve probably tried and not liked it. I’m not particularly interested in YA (a personal preference rather than a value judgment!)
Recommendations gleefully accepted!

okay okay I do in fact need to scream more so uhm I'll give the big thing first:
this is the 'oh they're falling in LOVE with each other' moment, the one where all the audience realizes it too, it's clear as fucking day and it's very much not just platonic and the way Nandor looked at Guillermo is still ruining me
Guillermo carefully but firmly saying Nandor is sabotaging himself. Nandor thinking about it and admitting he's afraid and FEELING BETTER when Guillermo says he'll be there beside him instead of scoffing at the idea.
Marwa is just all the fuck over Guillermo, threesome fics when?
Nandor stepping away from his own wedding reception, not even dancing with his bride, to give Guillermo a moment of pure unguarded affection and gratitude and even dignity-!!
It was so fucking much it was perfect it was everything. Even the fighting at the beginning was everything. Even the - fuck they have CANON ROMCOM MOVIE DATES that they REMINISCE ABOUT.
BUT everything wonderful happened this episode like it's not even the Nandermo of it all even though it fully is.
SEANIE AND CHARMAINE just fitting in perfectly to the insane reception, I'm a 'Sean has an idea of what's going on' truther and since the only hypnosis was for them to not freak out and to not remember at the end of the night the way they blended was just. Pure delight.
I am also a Baron/Sire truther and the affection the Baron had when saying he taught the Sire English was so sweet. Even if they're platonic housemates, time clearly has not been friend to either of them, I'm so glad they have family in each other now.
Rejuvenated Baron is serving IWTV energy as bisexual as ever and I approve highly.
Nadja and the Guide being nice to Guillermo, the Guide empathizing with him right away, the freaking shopping montage!! The Nadja/Guide prom pic! Everyone giggling on the floor like idiots! Nadja/Guide and Nandermo comparisons omg pls hook up before the season is over!
Guillermo seeing that being a vampire alone is actually fucking horrible and (heart of the series, Memo my beloved) inviting Derek, including him in the world of people like him. Because none of this shit means anything if you don't have people to share it with. Make friends with him Guillermo wtf, he seems fun and nerdy and you need friends your own age, a fledgling vampire does in fact count.
I've already gushed about the Djinn's gift to Nandor but like, the sheer kindness of that when both he and we thought it was over is making me ascend.
Cannot WAIT to see where this shit with Marwa goes, I feel like they could do better writing her but making her kind of a blank slate was meant to lead to this moment. Also, she likes the things Nandor likes now - that includes Guillermo, and presumably fighting and horses and his favorite colors and whatever. But is 'liking what Nandor likes' going to mean liking Nandor? Because it's very possible that it won't.
Best episode of the season and one of the most episodes of all time, the way The Escape and The Casino are, it just does not miss once.

Ok, if you haven’t seen the new trailer for episode 3, go watch that. It’s on YouTube on the FX channel, and it’s only about 30 seconds.
Spoilers ahead:
So, Nandor says that he wants the Djinn to give him the world’s biggest penis to improve his relationship with his fiancée, and I think that’s REALLY telling.
It’s already obvious that Nandor is trying to find the perfect bride who will make all of his problems go away. I’ve seen a bunch of people point out that he basically wants his partner to have literally no flaws, and that Marwa isn’t necessarily his true love, she’s just the last one standing. If she really was his true love, he probably wouldn’t be interrupting her and asking the Djinn to change her appearance.
But I think Nandor’s perfectionism is going to go beyond micromanaging Marwa, and he’s going to start holding himself to impossible standards. Because if his relationship with Marwa isn’t working (which it probably won’t), he’s probably going to start blaming himself. It’s going to start out harmless, with silly stuff like “maybe my dick isn’t big enough”, and the Djinn is an easy solution to that, but I can see this going in a very dangerous direction very fast and I’m legitimately worried for Nandor. You could make the argument that Nandor was specifically insecure about his penis after the events in s3e9 when the other vampires were calling it average, and I can only imagine what other insecurities he’s going to blame for his failing relationship.
Anyway, I’m contractually obligated to put a Nandermo spin on this by pointing out that Guillermo was by Nandor’s side even at his worst, and he went out of his way to defend Nandor’s dick in that same episode where everyone was calling it disappointing

Here’s a continuation of the various pieces of concept art from the video game adaptation of Van Helsing.
Without further comment, let’s proceed!
Tumblr media
Here’s some artwork of a Banshee. It’s giving me strong John Carpenter’s The Thing vibes. Especially with the gargantuan maw of teeth around the torso, scary stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another recurring enemy type in these mouthless husks, huh that’s a pretty cool name. Possibly poor villagers who were victims of Dracula and his Brides, mostly due to their attire implying they were once human. It also seems that might levitate, given how their feet are off the ground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s a full body and head study of a creature called a Hell Wolf. Whither it’s something similar to a Hell Hound but a Wolf, or a Wolf that has been a subject of Dracula’s evil. Regardless this is one gnarly beast, but it won’t be the last.
Tumblr media
Here’s a image of what appears to be a monstrously large Owl, based off the little writing on the piece this creature is a “Ghost Owl.”
Tumblr media
Here’s the last variant of a normal animal turned supernatural, what appears to be a undead Bear. Possibly something similar to the Hell Wolf before but a bear.
Tumblr media
Now this is interesting! What appears to be a creature made out of shadow and or darkness, dual wielding swords. Based off their appearance of the swords, they seem similar to scimitars. Is it possible that these shadow creatures are Djinn? Given how in Arabian mythology Djinn are demons made of smoke or fire, which would also explain the design of the swords.
Tumblr media
Sorry to end this with something of a dud, but the other pieces are too good to leave behind. I just don’t have enough space to ad them here. A flying burning skull breathing fire from its mouth.

I stopped watching around season 3. what happened?
In season 4 nandor is on this journey to "find love" and does so by discovering a djinn lamp he owns and using his many wishes to- in short- resurrect one of his 37 wives to marry.
He actually resurrects all of them but picks marwa, a quiet but sweet and intelligent woman to be his bride. It's been clear from the Start that nandors attraction/desire to be married is very superficial, using his wishes to change aspects about marwa's personality up to the wedding day.
Almost immediately after they get married nandor is already bored with the marwa who's personality he sandpapered. While all that has been happening a smaller plotline has been going on revealing that guillermo found himself a boyfriend while he was in London (Idk if you got to the season finale but he was in London for a while) who's finally coming to visit! His name is Freddie, he's a white British man.
When nandor sees Freddie he immediately wants him for himself but oh no! A plot hole! He's married to marwa and he can't cheat on her! (They even make a joke that's like 'I never once cheated on my 37 wives. Why he suddenly can't add Freddie to his collection of wives is not addressed.)
So. He uses one of his last wishes (maybe actual last I can't remember) to turn marwa into Freddie. No cloning no alternative just. Change her into Freddie. No more marwa. Yada Yada Yada guillermo finds out some bullshit happens and then nandor fucking releases his freddie/marwa clone into the wild where he ends up in a selfcest relationship with real Freddie. We get no closure for marwa.
So yeah. Taking one of the few female characters with a prominent role at all but especially a character of color, stripping her of all her personality little by little until she's essentially a walking mannequin, and then turning her into a white man only to be unceremoniously tossed out by the end of the episode with no resolution.
Now this was a guest-written episode (and it shows there's so much off with the characterization in that ep) but they still approved, filmed, and released it.
But no yeah nandor and guillermo kissing is like totally problematic slash s

There's been a lot of talk about the significance of how Guillermo was super impressed by the dowry, but im obsessed with the detail before that: Nandor is showing off his secret treasure that he'd kept hidden from everyone...until Guillermo somehow showed himself in even though the door was LOCKED. The treasure is Nandor's true Self behind his exterior aloofness/difficult-ness and the secret room is his Cold Dead Heart!!!! How did you get in there, indeed, Guillermo? I go insane every time I think about it. They really just casually put that revealing metaphor in there. Love to hear your thoughts
Honestly, both are details that I've thought a lot about.
First of all, the dowry. I feel like the dowry could go in a lot of directions, honestly. It was obviously a way to get the Djinn into the plot, but I feel like there's got to be more than just that. There was what Nandor said about modern women not being impressed by his dowry, cut directly to Guillermo being like WOW. You also kind of have to wonder where Marwa stands on the dowry that she's now apparently getting. Does she know about it? Is it something that she's been aiming for specifically? Would she prefer to take the money and just go to fucking NYU or something?
All that said, I also think it's very funny that like... Nandor... may not understand what a dowry is... Like the husband isn't supposed to give it to the wife, lmao. Typically, a dowry is paid by the bride's family to the husband, usually to provide stability and protection to their daughter as she enters into a new household. The one big exception is that a husband does give his wife a dowry... when he divorces her. That's when a husband pays a dowry; it's kind of like a form of alimony.
Foreshadowing...? Who knows.
It does also make me wonder if the dowry is going to get given away eventually in the show... I have some half-formed thoughts there, but I'll keep them to myself for now...
Now, for what you were actually asking about! I think the metaphor is so much fun and it also pinged me immediately. I think you're right to point out how easily Guillermo passed into Nandor's "locked room", so to speak. I'd also like to add that Guillermo got into this room that Nandor still thought was locked. It's unclear whether Nandor forgot to lock the door behind him or if Guillermo picked the lock, but either way, Nandor was surprised to find that Guillermo had already made his way inside.
I... don't think I have to explain to you why that's meaningful. I think that Nandor's bewildered to be realizing both this season and the last how much Guillermo has already wormed his way past his defenses. It's not just that Guillermo has gotten into a place that Nandor hasn't allowed anyone else to visit; it's that Nandor didn't even realize he was doing it. He has no defenses that can stand up to Guillermo, not anymore, and I think he's finally starting to realize that. Guillermo knows him too well. He can pick any lock that Nandor sets in front of him -- or maybe Nandor is starting to subconsciously neglect to lock them.
Does he want Guillermo to come in and he just can't admit that to himself yet? Or is Guillermo just a force of nature that can no longer be denied? Either way, what was initially an uncomfortable situation for Nandor seems to have gotten ironed out and he's quite comfortable sharing his treasure with Guillermo now. (See also: giving himself away as a gift vs. collaboration, communication, discussing options, and sharing the treasure.)
Plus, as for the Djinn... We have a priceless treasure here deep within Nandor that he didn't know how to use. Guillermo has had to help him every step of the way. Rubbing it, wishing properly, etc. And I think that probably extends to this idea of Guillermo helping Nandor realize parts of his own personality that he's never fully understood. He's helping him grow as a person, which is something that, lbr, Nandor desperately needs.
I mentioned before how interesting it was that they had Guillermo standing up above Nandor while they were figuring out how to use the lamp, putting him on a higher level than Nandor and forcing him to look up at him as they spoke, perhaps for the first time. The dynamics inside Nandor's innermost chamber are changing. :')
I am actually curious to see how far they push this metaphor, but so far it's really fun to talk about! I'll keep thinking about it and I hope you do, too. haha

Don't worry. I'm just as gobsmacked at the whole Erazor Djinn example as you are.
And that's unfortunate because he does make an interesting contrast to Chaos. You could argue that he was also a victim to an extent too because it's implied that he was set up to fail from the narrative in his world already being written/chosen for him. The difference is that he actively chose to target people who had nothing to do with it and be callous until the bitter end. Like, the fun thing about characterization him in me and my friend's AU is that Erazor really does believe that he is the "good guy" who was wronged by his world's creator and "the blue rat", and his burning hatred has only been solidified since then. In his mind he believes by forcing him to be his bride, he is "saving" Chris from his family name and the expectations of it he was born into, and getting his family "out of the way" was necessary. And no amount of "No means no"s will budge Erazor's convictions. It's still in character- at least I think so- and he's still very much a snake in the grass abuser. Only difference is that he moved on to a new victim, and found a new excuse to justify his God complex.
But nah. Sonic should have just put the evil bara genie in time-out!
Erazor had all the potential to be a tragic villain, but deliberately he chooses not to be.
He's a genie of the lamp in a written story he's aware of. He's doubly enslaved, and he wants to break free, which is more than understandable. In this, his main foil is Shahra, who is also a genie (and a lesser one, less powerful than him) and who is implied to have been trapped in her relationship with Erazor. And yes, he works as a foil for Chaos, who was also trapped in a magical object and developed burning hatred as a result.
But whoops, Erazor was imprisoned in his lamp as a punishment for his past evil deeds! Whoops, he actually wants to destroy the world and possibly Sonic's world as well! Whoops, he's a piece of shit towards Shahra - he tried to curse her with the Flame of Judgment, and that was in his first cutscene!
way to kill the sympathy bro
(hot take: another foil for him? The Deadly Six. They could have been sympathetic due to Eggman torturing them with the Magic Conch... but noooooo they just had to drain the world and get pissy against the one who saved them. nice job assholes)
But also. The thing is. I know that "it's not that deep" is a thought-terminating cliché, but... the Sonic series never meant to tackle these themes of who deserves redemption or to be spared. Sonic is a cartoon series where the protagonist can let the antagonist drown in fucking lava, and nothing bad happens! Am I supposed to think Sonic is a heartless sadistic murderer for the shit he put Eggman through in the Classics alone? Am I supposed to think that Sonic secretly cares about Eggman because he never dies, which means that Sonic always lets him go and never finishes the job? I don't know, and neither did the devs of the games! We don't know what Sonic wants to do with Eggman, because the games are rather self contained, and once the big bad robot is defeated, Sonic's job is done! Is Eggman lost into space, between timelines, vanished into thin air after his mech was destroyed? Who cares, he'll come back, it doesn't mean anything!
And this extends to all the other villains: is Sonic a horrible beast for killing Biolizard, letting Metal behind as he was angsting, erasing Solaris from the timeline? No, because the priority is saving the world, not applying morality to monsters!
Which more or less reminds me of something I said ages ago: Sonic's only "principle" is helping people in need. He has no principles regarding his enemies. He doesn't care. He only cares about doing good to those who need it.

Happy pride y’all!! Have some skybound fanart for my au.
Essentially, most of the season is the same with only like 2 or 3 major changes.
1) Jay only saw the eyepatch and a small munchkin that turns out to be CJ (baby wu)
2) when they have that awkward sexist interview (w/ just cole, nya, and Jay) Cole actively came out as gay (he figures out the demi stuff later) to stop them from pestering nya about the love triangle, Jay fucking sneezes to interrupt and then asked her what taking on the preeminent single handedly and winning was like. They then answer all the sexist questions and shit (there’s some great fanfics about this that definitely inspired this; I’ll try to remember to link them somewhere) the reason they did this was because nya and Ronin had a talk with them (and dareth) after the whole commercial/make-up segment fiasco.
3) Jay’s parents (Ed and Edna; who fun fact are t4t and were both post op, so they couldn’t have biological kids) and culture growing up is heavily Persian/Pakistani inspired(bc the movie voice actor is from Pakistan im pretty sure). So he grew up hearing legends and tales about the djinn, and viewed them like fairytales or demigods. He had heard the tale of the vile Nadakhan the pirate king, but thought it was stupid to believe the stories were real. So he was more starstruck when he first saw nadakhan. And after being insecure about his financial status (mostly cuz he couldn’t afford to take his friends out to eat like that) it was easy for nadakhan to manipulate him into making the first wish that sent them down the same road as the og stories
4) Nadakhan kidnaps Jay instead of nya to be his bride, mostly cuz that’s who was grabbed, but also cuz Jay has stubbornly remained unbroken and he wanted to break him by being the reason he’s all powerful (or some shit like that)Either a cultural misunderstanding or bc he’s an asshole, nadakhan begins using feminine terms for Jay (she/her, and shit; his bigender awakening). The photo on the left has the wedding attire Jay wore.
5) god there was more of these than I thought. Anywhoodle, time doesn’t reverse, bc Jay is able to be hit with the venom and be fine (well ok he was feverish and sick for a couple days, but the Serpentine blood in his veins meant he was immune to most poisons). He wishes nadakhan to be mortal, and in the process is cursed by nadakhan to never die *and* to watch his loved ones die over and over again.
Hmmm…. I swear there was more I wanted to say, but for the life of me I can’t remember
Oh well 🤷

Since you asked for questions about your fantasy world: how does magic works in it? As in... is this an otherworldy thing wielded by inhuman beings? Is it rather a craft or an art taught among humans? Does it require tools? Is it some natural gift you get when you are born? IS THERE EVEN MAGIC AT ALL OR ARE WE LIVING INSIDE A LIE
Magic is like science.
Magic is to my world, what physics and chemistry are to our world.
People spend a lifetime studying the hidden works and mechanics of the universe and how to best use them at their behalf.
The term magic itself is very shallow and inaccurate. You don't look at a power line and just call it "the power of science".
Humans call it the Faeric Arts, and it comprises of things we call chemistry, physics, robotics, thaumaturgy, alchemy, mechanics, parapsychology, etc.
Humans call it the "faeric" arts, because they were first developed by the "faeric" races.
The faeric races, or fairies, generic term humans use to designate giants, elves, mermaids, gnomes, ogres, Djinns, etc, used this knowledge to build vast empires that conquered and colonized over human kingdoms. This meant men kidnapped and used for labor, women kidnapped and used for brides, children kidnapped and used as delicated treat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only recently humans are discovering how to use the Faeric Arts and are living an Industrial Revolution for the very first time. Now they have the means of fighting back.
One of the greatest miracles of the new age of machines, it's the use of Faeritricity, energetic power attracted directly from the ground using the Ley Lines. Using black obelisks with arcane signals, they allow the power to be transmitted wireless, powering all sorts of devices.
Now the old fairy tale kingdoms have a powerline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Eldritchia, an Elvish Empire, continues to be humanity's greatest threat, thanks to their immense monstrous mechanic army.

Castle in the Air by Diana Wynne Jones Review
Spoilers discussed!
Tumblr media
Plot
The sequel to the popular Howl's Moving Castle centers around Abdullah, a young but not prosperous carpet merchant. What he lacks in funds and "success" (defined by his frankly horrid family, who want nothing more than to marry him to two ugly, cantankerous, and entitled women), he makes up for in his imagination. He dreams that he's not his father's son, but a long-lost son of a prince, betrothed to a beautiful princess. His world was turned upside when a mysterious stranger sells him a magic carpet.
With his genie in a bottle, soldier friend, and two cats, Abdullah sets off to rescue his fairest of them all from a floating castle, and the evil djinn determined to make every princess in the world his bride, will Abdullah succeed? Will the two prophecies finally be solved? Read this stunning sequel to find out!
Discussion
The plot sort of reminded me of the song "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast. Indeed, we got far-off places, magic spells, swordfights (dagger and physical fights would be more appropriate), and a prince (or maybe two...) in disguise. Maybe Belle was reading this novel? All jokes aside, this was a good read.
Like the characters, I quickly grew sick of Abdullah's flowery language. What I mean by that is that he's so heavy on flattery and adjectives- it takes him three lines to talk to the magic carpet for crying out loud!
I knew that Sophie and Howl would end up having a child together! Morgan sounds absolutely adorable. I do have to give Mrs. Jones props for portraying Sophie as an awkward mother, someone who isn't comfortable holding their baby at first. I know many mothers go through that.
I liked seeing the original characters from Howl's making a comeback- from Sophie to Howl, to Lettie and Calcifer. It was a nice little Easter egg and sealed the deal about this book being in the Howl's Moving Castle franchise.
Overall, a good read.
