Snellen Eye Chart Manufacturers in India: Eye charts are one of the numerous instruments the doctor uses during an eye exam, but they help assess one’s eyesight. During an eye exam, eye charts assess visual acuity by comparing how well one can see to other people. The eye doctor asks the patient to read the minor line of writing that one can make out from 20 feet away while looking at the eye chart.

“The beast told you not to be a nuisance, yet you’ve insisted to become one. Did you think you’d go unpunished?”
“As Your Highness can see, our vineyards wield grapes only of the finest quality, and we plan to establish a steady cider manufacture in the perspective of two years,” Annabelle Lavigne spoke. She’d square her shoulders if she could; alas, that was not possible simply due to the fact they had already been squared. Her head held high, she searched Chevalier’s face for any reaction, haughty in her assumption affirmation would be locked somewhere between his brows, eyes, and lips.
“Indeed,” he agreed without much of any reaction. “Considering your claims, you’d offered to sell your product below its market value, however.”
“Exclusivity deal with the palace is ought to bring good fame to my name, Your Highness. I may not earn much at the palace itself, but the overall increase in sales should more than outweigh any losses I may face,” she explained, although her words seemed to have been a waste of air.
A deep furrow etched itself between Lady Lavigne’s brows, little different from ruts scattered over dirt roads with the first coming of spring rains. She softened a glare, suppressed what could be a growl, a howling sounding off from the distance. Perplexed, Annabelle covered her mouth, as if the sound came directly form her; however, Prince Chevalier did not seem to pay her any mind, instead briskly turning around and striding back down the path they’d just walked.
“Your Highness…?”
Seeing that she’d follow him regardless, Chevalier spared her no kindness. He did not say a word.
***
Cold struck Esther, shrunk the air in her lungs. It had her gasp, cramped her abdomen, urged her to fold onto herself, climbed up the ladders of wet hair to seize her head – it enveloped her whole, froze the blood burning in her veins, shocked her, and yet… She still dove further into it, neither hearing nor seeing anything. The submerged world was dark and turbulent, far too convoluted for her to tell anything save for the top and bottom of it. Her vision failed her, all images coming blurred, the roaring current reverberating through her entire body in waves of noise rendering her hearing just as useless. There was nothing. There was everything. All soaked through with the clamouring of her heart, each elapsed second eating away at what little breath she still had.
Esther pushed against the water, the river pulling her along its path. She searched, desperate in her pursuit, and yet –
There she was, wrapped in disjointed movement and escaping air. Marianne kicked her arms and legs as if to protect herself from the attack, thus only worsening the supine assault –
Her hands could still make it in time. Esther reached for Marianne, the girl grabbing at her, each tiny finger a hook to her flesh. A panicked anchor, Marianne climbed, her entire body protesting the moment Esther clutched her against herself. From lifeline to needing one, she pushed against the ever-surrounding weight, further and further up, for as long as her body allowed –
Esther gasped for air. The surface of the river shattered above her head. Marianne coughed and lurched, water dripping from her mouth as she fought to take the air in. She opened her eyes, and in presence of her tears being made invisible, she screamed, arms wrapped tightly around Esther’s neck.
“Everything is fine, sweetheart, it’s fine. It’s fine now. I promise, it’s fine,” she chanted, even though her arms were weak against the current. Esther turned her head towards the shore to estimate how far they had been carried away.
A mass of brown and black fur shot out from the orchard, dust scattering from below the massive paws, elongated snout kept close to the ground.
“Bambi! Bambi!” Esther shouted with what energy she had, wolf-like head turning towards her. Bambi broke into a dash again, each leap outpacing the river’s flow, until –
Splash.
Esther glanced from the dog swimming towards her to Marianne, and back the other way around, the girl still crying. She took in a shaky breath.
“Princess Marianne, you must compose yourself,” she spoke the way storytellers did when reaching the climax of their tale. “There comes your mortal enemy, the dragon who tried to steal you away from under your mother’s care!”
Marianne gasped. Cautiously, she looked over her shoulder, her grip relaxing by a fraction.
“What do we do, wizardess?”
“Hmm…” Esther mused aloud, her arms and legs beginning to feel awfully heavy now that her throat was somewhat less tight again. “My mind-reading powers tell me the dragon seeks your forgiveness, Princess. He wants to help you get back to safety.”
Marianne clutched onto her harder.
“Do...Do we trust the dragon?” she shrilled.
“We do, Princess Marianne.”
It was a relief to entrust Bambi with carrying the child’s weight – and even greater relief it was when they reached the shore, a familiar figure standing just above them. Esther lifted her head, a thin sheet of frost coming over her limbs the moment she met Chevalier’s gaze with her own. Displeased or perhaps annoyed by the situation, he crouched down.
“Marianne!” Lady Lavigne cried, skirts held in her hands as she hurried towards them. Esther patted the girl’s back, and oddly enough, the child did not even seem to mind the fact that Chevalier was the one to pull her out, tiny feet having barely touched the ground before her mother swept her into her arms. Esther looked towards the dog –
“Bambi doesn’t need help,” sharp words came from above her head.
Oh, Esther mouthed the sound, but did not dare utter a word, exasperation thickening the atmosphere around them. She lowered her head, perhaps unwilling to agree that, indeed, she thought about the dog first. Water dripped down her back, her blouse sticking firmly to her chest, her legs being close to useless once made aware of the weight of her wet clothes. Esther fell to the ground, or would have, had somebody not held her by the arm – either way, she did sit down, unhearing, unseeing, just simply cold and soaked through with exhaustion and water alike. Entire clusters of words twined around her ears, not even one making it through to her. Esther hugged herself.
“… wench …”
“… mommy… Esther… I…”
“… It is your personal failure not to have ingrained basic safety in your child…”
Oh. There was this feeling again. Without thinking of it much, Esther wrung her hair out and pushed herself up on her stiff legs. She walked to where she discarded her bag and capelet. Careful as ever, she put them on before returning to the group. She lowered her head.
“If I may… I’d like to request to be allowed to return to the estate with Lady Marianne. She should change into dry clothes immediately.”
***
Esther combed through her hair one last time, the strands looking more brown than their usual blonde, at least when still this damp. With a sigh on her lips, she pinned it away from her face, Bambi glancing up at her from beside the hearth, fire buzzing within the fireplace. She had just finished buttoning up her blouse when the doorknob turned with a quiet click. Nevertheless, Esther did not trouble herself with checking who that might be, instead settling over the bed.
The door closed.
“Has something happened?” she asked, a glimpse of a white cape getting caught in the corner of her eye. Chevalier walked towards the armchair standing in the corner, Bambi raising his head to sniff his boots.
No words were offered to her. A book snapped open in Chevalier's hand seemingly of its own accord, pages turning until he reached the point at which he last stopped. He outstretched his legs and crossed them at the ankles, eyes already focusing on the words…
“To what do I owe the visit then?”
His brows twitched before nearing each other. “The gremlin is throwing a tantrum right now. It is marginally quieter here.”
Esther suppressed a grimace. . “One last thing,” she sighed. “Thank you for helping me out there.”
“You show gratitude for the strangest things.”
“I wouldn’t call pulling somebody out of the water a strange thing to thank for,” Esther argued and placed her hands in her lap.
“Then would you deem it more logical to let a pawn needlessly drown?” Chevalier laughed scornfully, his gaze still holding onto the ink. Firmly.
“Just accept it. I am thankful regardless.”
Chevalier turned the page.
The dinner was served early that day, perhaps to appease Lady Marianne, her wails ceasing as soon as crockery plinked against the table. Unsure of whether she should be there in the first place, Esther sat down to Chevalier’s left, her mouth watering at the sight of the various dishes – whatever stood behind the change, this time more than half of them seemed to be of a kind that would not prompt her guts to be upset. Fish, salads, roasts, pastry, soup, gravy, fruit, cheese and other dairy, all and more had her body tense in a silent prayer to her stomach, begging it not to growl. The food was being plated, servants hurrying around the room to set out glasses full of wine, presumably of their domestic production; sampling, as per their initial schedule. Esther lifted her fork up, hoping she could contain herself as not to wolf everything down.
Wine.
She lifted a piece of baked trout to her lips, her eyes darting across the table one last time. Marianne began to take her meal apart, slicing the meat into smaller and smaller chunks.
Wine.
Esther set the fork down on her plate. She reached for the cup instead.
“Lady Marianne?” she asked, the girl looking up instantly.
“Yes?”
“Could I perhaps ask you for a favour? It is most presumptuous of me, but… It so happens that I am not sure whether I locked the window in my room, and Bambi is still drying up. He may be getting cold, but I’m starving. Would you mind checking it for me?” Esther spoke, all the while holding Annabelle’s gaze. The lady of the household bit into a piece of roasted cauliflower, but remained otherwise silent.
“O-Of course!”
The door to the dining room closed, something thudding just outside of it. Esther leaned back in her chair, still holding onto the glass. She stared into it, burgundy vortex raging right below her fingertips. It climbed up against the walls of its restraint, pungent in its scent, enticing, alluring… Most obviously, red.
“Don’t,” Chevalier said.
“I… suppose I shouldn’t.”
Silence.
Esther brought the cup to her lips and downed half of it before he pulled it away. Chevalier glared at her, sterner than she had ever seen him.
“It’ll make… the situation more transparent… no?” she laughed weakly, her tongue feeling mildly numb. Not five minutes managed to pass before she closed her eyes, enveloped in thick slumber.
***
Wheels tapped a steady rhythm against the uneven road, pebbles skipping out from below the horse shoes. Esther let out a soft groan, calm vertigo twisting the world around her with each sway of the carriage. Her head throbbed, but even so, she pushed herself up from the cushioned seat…
“Lay down. You’re going to fall over,” a familiar voice came from the opposite of her, although at a moment too late. The floor beneath her shook, and whatever thought it was that her hazy mind was forming, it sunk back into the ever-flowing static. Esther retained little sense of direction, the surrounding darkness doing little to remedy the fact – just as she was told, she lost her balance, and so was destined to fall. She never crashed, however, caught in and by some closely undefined warmth.
Esther shook her head in surprise. She moved her legs, perhaps intending to stand once again, but could not get up, held firmly in place by somebody’s arm… and the place in question seemed to be somebody’s lap.
“I’ve told you you’d fall,” Chevalier sighed, his breath grazing her ear.
Oh. The world made itself clearer to Esther, some mist retreating from her mind.
“What exactly happened?” she asked, suddenly made aware of the fact that the sun had long sunken below the horizon line.
“Clavis arrived in time to capture some of Lavigne’s contacts. We’ve confiscated the arms still in her possession.”
Crows shouted outside. Esther shuddered at the sound.
“Are they…?”
“Some of the smugglers are currently awaiting extradition. Lavigne and the rest will be interrogated at the palace…” Chevalier took a deep breath. “And my fool of a brother insisted to personally take care of the gremlin for the time being.”
Cold needles seemed to retreat from her hands. The carriage shook again, thus having Esther sway lightly, still not fully in control of her body. Nevertheless, she attempted to straighten her back, with some degree of success.
“I see,” she whispered. However, her relief was short-lived, two angry fingers coming to poke her forehead. Painfully. Esther pouted. “What was that for?”
“For getting yourself drugged despite my warning. You’re lucky it wasn’t poisoned.”
She could almost see him scowl. “I was fairly certain it wasn’t poisoned, Prince Chevalier,” she argued at him. “Marianne was in the room… and I’d be of more use to them while still alive. However… they did not pour it in front of us, so your glass –”
Chevalier snorted. His grip on her waist tightened almost to the point of hurting. He reached for the collar of her blouse, deft fingers grazing her neck as he began undoing the buttons. Esther winced, only put at ease once he moved down to reveal her collarbones.
“Prince Chevalier?”
“The beast told you not to be a nuisance, yet you’ve insisted to become one. Did you think you’d go unpunished?”
Esther frowned. She tilted her head to the side, dishevelled hair falling away from her face as she searched for an appropriate reply, certain it lurked somewhere at the back of her tongue. All words failed her, however, sentences colliding to take away from each other until naught but gasps remained. Newly summoned fire scorched her flesh, his teeth a flint against her steel-stiff shoulder. Chevalier bit into her, his lips a flame at her skin, each nibble a burnt-in blooming scarlet mark. He bit her again – Esther held back a growl, her nails to his scalp as she tugged on his hair, soft strands delivering their apologies while tickling the nape of her neck. She gritted her teeth, pushed at his chest, pulled at the ties of his cape, until finally her voice escaped. Esther moaned, the sound chasing the beast away.
Chevalier straightened his back, only the soreness lingering over her skin having her believe she in fact did not dream. She slumped against him.
“You’re impossible,” she laughed weakly, but laughed nonetheless, each word a shiver sliding down his neck. “Beast this… beast that… as if biting made you one… as if only you could…”
Time collapsed onto itself, warped call of the hunting horn sounding off inside Chevalier’s head. Soft lips brushed against the corner of his jaw, mumbled complaints a howling of hounds, barely a distraction from the teeth racking down his neck. Each touch a snare, he merely watched, cornered by the lithe hands pressing against his chest. Her fingers curled into his jacket, her breath spilled below his collar… Esther sucked on his skin, the faint prick an arrow aimed at the beast. At… him.
“There are… worse things… than getting hurt…” she finished at last, blissfully unaware of any wounds she might have caused. Her eyes closed, strength leaving her limbs – Chevalier watched, his mind, for once, empty. He looked through the carriage window, and searched the stars, any thought to occupy himself with being suitable enough…
Esther nuzzled into the crook of his neck.
“… so… warm…”
A strained breath heaved his chest. “You fool…”
Chevalier pulled his cape over her shoulders, and buttoned up her blouse. One hour until they reached the palace remained.

Index Astartes: Prædicators
Tumblr media
Origins
The history of the Inanis Prædicators can be traced back to the terrifying times around the Year of the Ghosts. The High Lords of Terra ordered a Chapter be founded from the Gene-legacy of the Silver Skulls, the line of Guilliman. Thadru Hucno, ‘The Void Herald’, was appointed as the Chapter’s first Lord Commander. Hucno was known for his superstitions, near-ritualistically talking into the void about his Prognosticators’ divinations, and it is from this practice which the Chapter’s High Gothic name derives.
This nascent Chapter and those which were founded alongside them were created from the most stable of gene-stock; how many chapters were founded alongside the Praedicators is unclear as a great many records have been lost within the labyrinth of the Administratum. All that is known is that at least half a dozen were founded, with the Howling Griffons being the most well-known. A majority of the Chapters from this founding follow the strict organisational and tactical guidelines of the Codex Astartes. Like most of the approximately one thousand chapters in existence, the Prædicators follow the doctrines of the Codex to an extent, but are also known for occasionally deviating from some of the less stringent requirements.
Thadru Hucno started the Praedicators upon a path that, for over seven thousand years now, has earned them a cold reputation throughout the Imperium. Since their inception, they have become known for holding an especially grim and fatalistic view of Mankind, stemming from the strange and terrible knowledge that is their burden. The inheritors of Hucno’s visions fight to deny the inevitable, bemoaning the high price they have to pay for such meagre gains as can be won in the wars against the enemies of the Imperium - but they fight on because that is what they were created to do.
It started within a few years of their founding, as brothers with no prior signs of psychic ability began experiencing vivid hallucinogenic dreams. The Apothecaries now suspect that this was due to the slow mutation of their Catalepsean Node, a dark flaw in the Chapter’s gene-seed that they were at first loath to discuss with even their fellow Astartes. These dreams were glimpses into a horrifying future, and eerily mirrored the more worrying divinations the Chapter’s psychically-attuned Prognosticators were beginning to scry.
As the dreams progressed in severity they eventually had no choice but to reach out; first to the Adeptus Mechanicus and their Genator-Magos, Abdul Hazred, and then to the Ultramarines, the First Founding Chapter whose Primarch Roboute Guilliman was the primogenitor of the Silver Skulls Chapter who in turn were the Praedicator’s forebears. At every step their emissaries were turned away, cursed for being too frightening to be believed. Other servants of the Imperium seemed unable to see the truth staring back at them from beyond the stars; of how pointless Mankind is in this universe, and how the Imperium is the centre of nothing. The confession of their genetic mutation only brought the Imperium’s scrutiny down onto the Prædicators, and with it Inquisitorial investigation along with the immediate presumption of guilt which that entails. Faced with such levels of paranoia and suspicion, the Praedicators have now learned to stay quiet, until one day they may perceive someone who is truly ready to heed their warnings.
Charged with heretical thinking and deviation from the Imperial Creed, the Chapter was sentenced to purgatory along the Imperium’s isolated southern border. Their presence might still be of some use to the Imperium, and the location of their penitent exile was carefully chosen in order to repair the power and reach of the Adeptus Astartes, until such time as they could once again call themselves true Scions of Guilliman in thought and deed. Being haunted by unimaginable visions and nightmares has profoundly altered their tale to this day. Unlike their fellow descendants of Guilliman, the Prædicators never once aspired to take the pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Primarch before his un-prophesised return. Nor have they made obeisance to him in person since, for their visions have made them pariahs and they are still shunned by the Astartes whose gene-seed they bear.
Recruitment
Tumblr media
Settling into their duty of protecting the periphery of the Segmentum Tempestus from Xenos incursions, an expeditionary fleet led by the Prædicators was tasked with mapping some essential yet unknown areas of the Veiled Region. Without this survey, the limited levels of navigation possible in this region would have continued to make it both difficult and dangerous to travel through. The Veiled Region  is known for being unstable at best, with perennial nebulae interfering with communication, not to mention the unusual levels of psionic radiation which often leave vessels to drift for days unable to re-enter the tumultuous Immaterium. Amongst the greatest dangers is its isolation from Astropathic communication, for psychic communication is reflected and echoed with only silence being returned. It was only due to the fleet’s particularly skilled Navigators that the exploration was even allowed, and their heroic efforts certainly explain why it was successful. Without them the fleet would be unable to traverse the frequently encountered breaking points of reality, pervasive nebulae, and vast stellar clouds. It was in this seemingly unknown and forgotten area of space, that the expeditionary fleet came upon what they had been told did not exist: human settlements! Under Imperial law they were prohibited, but the populations the fleet encountered seemed to be surviving and even thriving despite their separation from the light of the Astronomicon. What was more striking was the seemingly steady flow of vessels that came and went, bringing supplies and much needed trade, despite the innumerable Imperial edicts which they were breaking to do so.
All manner of vessels, it seemed, would frequently traverse through this region of space; merchants, miners, scavengers, prison ships, vessels belonging to darkholds, and even the occasional Rogue Trader’s personal flagship and attendant flotilla. Without these many visitors the far-flung human settlements would be isolated from one another and left unprotected. The Imperium functions on the premise that most core worlds do not need to be self-sufficient, instead focussing on the manufacture or production of a few key goods or resources which are then supplemented with essential goods from off-world. Without a steady stream of starships plying their way through the Veiled Region, interstellar trade could not exist, and the weapons and other supplies needed to stop each world falling into darkness would not be obtained.
Space travel beyond the boundaries of the Imperium is arduous and dangerous, with spacefarers relying on their ancient vessels’ powerful engines flinging them into the Immaterium - a black art poorly understood by the adepts of the Mechanicus in the forty-first millennium. Once vessels have entered warp-space they can cover thousands of light years within a relatively short time, dropping back into the Materium far beyond their starting points. The Warp ever seeks to drag helpless vessels to their doom, with its constant turbulence, and treacherous warp storms. To travel any distance at all through the warp is dangerous, impressive, and not attempted lightly. To travel between the distant worlds of the Veiled Region demanded a particular kind of dedication, madness, or disregard for the safety of those onboard. The alternative - travelling through realspace without the use of warp engines - brings its own hazards and challenges. And yet here were worlds visited by privateers and merchant princes, arriving via every means and from many directions.
Those aboard space-faring vessels in the forty-first millennium are not merely star travellers but the products of many generations passed in the darkness between worlds; these are the Void Born. They are relatively few among the teeming multitudes of humanity, but singular, and form a disparate and odd collection of misfits, strangers, and other ill-omened folk, birthed in the bellies of vessels that spend entire standard centuries charting a course through the stars. On the worlds the Void Born come to they are often shunned for their ethereal quality and considered to be unlucky, ill-fated, bringers of bad fortune, secretive, and untrustworthy. Most imperial citizens and no small number of fringe-dwellers believe the Void Born in some way to have been touched by the Warp where gravitational variance, radiation exposure, genetic distortion, and chaotic anomalies slowly take their toll. Ashore they carry a strange air about them, a perceptible something that makes others uneasy.
Darkholds
The Darkholders, the Void born from the spacefaring vessels with the darkest of reputations make up a greater proportion of the chapters chaplaincy than any other source. They are couched in stories of dire curses, bleak fortunes, baleful massacres, cannibalism, hauntings and worse. They are a breed apart to those with the wisdom to see it.

The plight of the Void Born was seen by the Praedicators as one mirroring their own; they too were homeless, and ostracised without just cause. Empathy overcame Hucno's soul. The Void Born, too, were somehow associated with the many and unfathomable dangers of the outer darkness. Their being inured to the Warp convinced the Lord Commander that they could serve as the source of recruitment for the aspirants who might safeguard the future of the Prædicators. Without a Homeworld of their own, the Chapter otherwise risked a slow dwindling through combat losses and the decline into old age that claims even the Astartes after many centuries. Having determined how they could sustain their Chapter, the Praedicators now settled into patrolling the periphery of the vastly unknown Veiled Region. This was ever a dangerous calling, with small groups of ships navigating amongst dense nebulae and newborn stars, suffering from waves of radiation cast off by discarded stellar matter whilst being cloaked from any hope of reinforcements or communication by swathes of stellar dust, and all the while patrolling along the galactic south of the Segmentum Tempestus, from which come the raiders and despoilers of the foul Xenos. The Void Heralds learned to deal with these conditions, or they died. The survivors became responsible for the surrounding areas of space, chief among them the Ainu System, the Nahmu Stars and the Hypnis Expanse. Apothecaries and Chaplains of the Prædicators recruit aspirants for the Chapter exclusively from the vast, city-sized spacecraft that ply the depths of the void; in this way, they follow the edicts of Lord Commander Hucno in order to ensure that the Chapter recruits only the most mentally capable and genetically suitable candidates.
Recruitment is slow and arduous, with no centralised pool of potential candidates to draw from and no way of knowing when the next suitable aspirant will be found within the innumerable shoals of voidfaring vessels. Chaplains must work within the labyrinthine political webs woven amongst the thousands of ships’ crew, often becoming embroiled in complex networks of feuds, alliances, and unpleasant little wars - all while taking care not to disrupt the carefully balanced system. Removing the wrong crewmember as a potential aspirant can potentially hamper the Void Born population's ability to maintain itself and properly crew a ship, depriving the Chapter of a valuable source of future recruits.
Brought to their space-bound fortress monastery, Cetus, to be inducted into the Prædicators the Void Born aspirants will step out to breathe in its unique ecosystem. Some fall into a catatonic, worshipful state when they see its grandeur. These failed aspirants are led away to serve the Chapter in other ways. Those who can take in the sight of Cetus without being overcome gradually learn that large portions of the vessel are used to emulate different combat environments for training purposes, while entire swathes of space are given to meditation. The great chambers and vaults are often decorated with tapestries depicting the terrifying nightmares they are to expect but most numerous of all are the seemingly endless barren halls. It is here that neophytes will undergo the long process of psycho-indoctrination, submitting to grueling biological and genetic testing before being implanted with the gene-seed that will sustain them through a lifetime of nightmares, turning their meagre bodies into killing machines, recreating the Void Born as a Void Herald. A once humble and frail recruit becomes the epitome of humanity, the perfect warrior and servant of the Imperium.

Ostracised by their forebears, the Prædicators were never afforded the luxury of being gifted a mighty relic of the Imperium. A brief change in their fortune sometime in 35th millennium however afforded the Chapter their first, most powerful, and most prized possession; a pre-Imperial battlestation of unknown origins found floating abandoned around a neutron star, its organic crew long turned to dust by aeons of inimical radiation which had somehow left the vessel’s hardened Machine Spirit intact. Upon sanctification by the Adeptus Mechanicus this gigantic warship would go on to become the Chapter's space bound fortress monastery, flagship, and foremost warship. In form and scale, it is nearer a planetoid than a conventional vessel. Its foredeck can dock a dozen Imperial Navy Cruisers around its circumference. The vessel is a hive city in space, with its great spires reaching towards the stars. It bears a striking resemblance to the trident shaped Furious Abyss-class Super Battleships of the Great Crusade, the last known example of which was slaved to the Word Bearers legion and long thought lost to the Warp. Its potential rivals that of the more famous Phalanx, and if it were fully operational the Praedicators could boast of wielding firepower equivalent to a formidable fleet. For now the Cetus’ power is untested, yet as more and more of its mysteries are explored the Mechanicus swear they are coming ever closer to bringing its weapon systems fully online. For now it remains more of a figurehead, deterring any would-be attackers with its studded surface packed with arched gun batteries, the squat shape of its singular plasma lance, and arrays of Psionic charges - alongside other more esoteric defences which have yet to be fully revealed. Restoring the Cetus has already been the labour of millennia, and it may yet be centuries more before it leads the Chapter into action once more - a prophesied return which has taken on greater significance with each new divination scryed by the Prognosticators
Battlefield Doctrine
Following the same reading and understanding of Roboute Guilliman's Codex Astartes as their Predecessors, the Silver Skulls, the Praedicators stay close to the sacred tome’s main tenets. This has protected the Chapter from any further suspicion and scrutiny from the Inquisition. The inevitably of all that they know becoming enveloped in darkness never leaves their thoughts but War is their purpose; it is what the Heralds were created for, and it is their last source of pride and satisfaction.
The tactical orthodoxy is dictated to a degree by the fact that they are a Fleet Based Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes - some would say, the truest bearers of the name “Space Marines”. Their limited numbers ensure the Chapter is not used as a blunt instrument but instead to deliver precise and lethal strikes in a manner that could never be achieved by the faceless masses of the Astra Militarum. Millennia of repeated combat indoctrination has shaped them into the force they are today; efficiency in war is their only antidote for bemoaning the cost of taking something that achieves nothing, and being unable to stop the creeping darkness.
After making planetfall on a new world the Praedicators make the most of their precognitive psychic abilities by deploying as a predominantly defensive force. Their Techmarines and commanding officers orchestrate fire bases that use skilled marksmen and overlapping fields of fire to suppress oncoming attackers. Assault forces held in reserve wait for the opportune moment to disrupt their attackers further with well executed raids, attacking seemingly from all sides at once. These attacks have the dual goal of causing considerable damage and sowing confusion among the enemy ranks. Praedicators bemoan the cost of war and, so their reasoning goes, so too will those that try to defy them. It is said the only death the Praedicators fear is the slow death through madness which is the fate of so many Void Born; it is why they give no quarter and expect none in return. As with their predecessors it is not unknown to hear of the Prædicators displaying an unwillingness to go to another’s aid. After all, no one is willing to come to theirs, and sometimes the divinations simply show the cost to be too severe. It is perhaps this single fact which explains why they have survived for so long, and yet have so few allies even amongst their Astartes gene-kin.
Some opponents make the mistake of thinking the defensively-minded Praedicators are an inert force, slow to rouse and lacking in agility. Such thinking brings the enemies of mankind only woe. When the Chapter begrudgingly determines that they have to take ground, they will seek to overwhelm their foes so mightily that they may maintain offensive momentum at all costs. Nor are their assaults rash or under-prepared; preferring to engage directly after a carefully orchestrated orbital bombardment from their vast fleet assets, waves of drop-pod infantry and light equipment arrive with impeccable timing alongside Thunderhawk-deployed vehicles and other heavy assets.
Chapter Scouts will most often be required to gather vital intelligence - a mission which can demand they face the foe under a huge range of dangerous  circumstances. This hard-won knowledge is used to confirm or expand on the information gained from the Prognosticators divinations. Scouts are further used in the disruption of enemy supply lines through sabotage and demolition actions, as well as to eliminate key targets with crippling campaigns of assassination missions and pre-emptive strikes.
Their collective actions are often mistaken for bravery and courage. In truth, the Praedicators stand before the enemies of the Imperium unflinchingly as they consider themselves worthless. It is only thanks to the Chaplains that walk among them in the heat of battle, reminding them of their purpose, their sole responsibility, that they continue to fight. Without strong leadership they might otherwise lapse into dark thoughts: the want to die, the want to despair, and the want to return to nothing.
Organisation
An outside observer would find it difficult to spot any differences between the Prædicators and a chapter rigidly adhering to the tenets of the Codex, such as the Ultramarines. Prædicators have been considered a near Codex Astartes-adherent chapter for much of their history, although the nature of a fleet-based chapter does require some flexibility in this regard, with isolated fleet elements being forced to adapt their tactics to the resources available to them. Additionally, the Prædicators fight predominantly without direct Imperial support due to their ill-omened reputation, instilling in them a sense of self-reliance uncommon in many Codex-style chapters who are more comfortably meshed in the greater Imperial war machine.
It is in the organisation of the higher levels that deviations from the Codex Astartes can be seen. All Chapters include a number of officers and specialists who stand aside from the company organisation. In the Prædicators the Chapter Master is referred to as Lord Commander, as was the way of their predecessors, the Silver Skulls. The Librarians, known as Prognosticators, share the mantle of spiritual advisors (alongside their Brother-Chaplains); these psychically attuned warriors are the seers of the Chapter, scrying for divination of the future. Wherever their visions take them, they grant the squads and companies they are attached to an undeniable edge for the coming battles.
Tumblr media
The Chapter relies on a large support staff, and highly ranked members include the Master of the Fleet, and the senior Captains: the Keeper of the Arsenal, the Abyssal Watcher, and the Warden of the Watch. Although each Captain is a Space Marine, there are actually relatively few Brethren in the Chapter’s support staff, and most non-combatant roles are performed by the Chapter’s Human serfs. The Chapter includes a large number of support staff, many of whom are non-combatants of advanced age tasked with the day-to-day administration of the Chapter. The largest group of Prædicators Space Marines in the support staff are the Chapter’s armourers and Techmarines, who are aided in their tasks by hundreds of mono-task Servitors.
The ten companies follow the structure laid down within the Codex, with the first company being made up of the most experienced Veterans among the Chapter’s ranks. Their wisdom is invaluable, and so they are attached to the Battle Companies to share their knowledge, deployed in small units and essentially armed in a similar manner to a Tactical squad though admittedly with their enhanced scopes and specialised ammunition. Only the most experienced of the Veterans will be permitted to wear the few suits of Terminator armour available to the Chapter. Unless the need for their presence on the battlefield is dire, these suits can be seen watching over you as you enter the forge on Cetus. Prædicator Techmarines have gone to extensive lengths to recover fallen suits of Terminator armour so that they may once more see battle.
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Companies are organised along Codex lines as Battle Companies. Each consists of six battleline squads, two close support squads, and two fire support squads. These four companies and their fleets form the main battle lines and generally bear the brunt of the fighting, whether planetside or in the void. Each has a degree of autonomy and with such a variety of squads, the Companies are highly flexible and tactically adaptable.
Companies 6 and 7 are reserve Companies, each consisting of ten battleline squads. These act as reserves which may be used to bolster the front line, launch diversionary attacks or stem enemy flanking manoeuvres. With such low recruitment rates these are rarely ever at full strength. The 7th company is barely seen at all, and some say it exists now in name only.
The 8th Company consists of ten close support squads. This highly mobile company is often equipped with jump packs, and is fielded in the assault role wherever a strong hand-to-hand fighting force is needed to storm an enemy strongpoint.
The Prædicators’ 9th Company follows the doctrines laid out in the Codex, unlike their progenitors the Silver Skulls, who designate their 9th Company as a siege company. In the Prædicators, this Company consists of ten Fire Support Squads. It is the most powerfully equipped in the Chapter and is used to bolster defence and provide long-range support.
The 10th Company consists of a number of Scout squads; youths who have been recruited and partially transformed into Space Marines. There is no formal size for the company as the rate of recruitment is not fixed. They are the only company to not maintain its own fleet, and instead operate directly from Cetus. Never fighting as one coherent force, they are instead assigned throughout the other fleets where they can gain experience alongside their elders.
All of the companies, with the exception of the Scout Company, maintain transports and Drop pods for each of their squads and officers. The armoury hold onto rarer equipment more centrally, including heavy vehicles such as Land Raiders, with each of these relic war machines being allocated to individual squads as dictated by the needs of their mission or when requested by a Captain in the midst of a campaign.
Many of the Battle companies and Reserve companies include a number of Dreadnoughts. These remain a part of the company in which the warrior served before being interred within the metal sarcophagus from which he fights; his continuing presence always bolsters the company’s fighting strength considerably.
Chapter Cult and Belief System
Haunted by their dreams, and seen as secretive, the ill-omened Prædicators are Void Born and know of the unfathomable dangers of the outer darkness. Just as they did before wearing the mantle of Astartes, they continue to carry a strange air about them; a perceptible yet undefinable something that makes even the bravest of the warriors from other Astartes Chapters uneasy around them.
Tumblr media
The Heralds know first-hand the horrors of space and the sheer multitude of the Emperor's enemies. This knowledge forces these voidfarers - plying the dark spaces between the stars while holding a deeper darkness within - to insulate their brotherhood from that which they are duty bound to protect. Thus they live a life of renunciation, rejecting what they know is always lurking in the void beyond the hull.
From deep within the Librarium, the minds of the Prognosticators look far out into the cold vastness of space, seeing further than any of their less gifted brothers’ dream-visions. Their sight will pierce the encroaching black veil for only a second, there to witness a momentary eternity of endless shrieking immemorial lunacy. They rarely speak of the eldritch contradictions of all matter, force, and cosmic order that scorch their mind. They have uncovered the abyss beneath their illusory sense of connection with Mankind; it is their gift, and their burden.
What all Brothers see is a senseless, mechanical, and uncaring universe. Mankind dissolves into meaninglessness when impermanence is the only real thing. They have tried for so long to look away and to wake from these terrible dreams, but with no understanding their minds are pulled and stretched further. The strain is too much for some. Staring deep into the void for so long, it now only stares back, as a contradicting reflection of what they have become: Reclusive, Withdrawn, Taciturn; Denizens of the Deep.
No ordinary Prædicator will be remembered, for all legacies will be burned, but the stars will live on. To recount tales of mankind’s history and achievements only delays the inevitable entropic devouring of every shred of memory, every artifact, and every settled world. Given that, the most solemn of causes is that of the Apothecarion; for their paradoxical role is to prepare for a future that does not appear to exist. The millennia of screeching divinations and torturous dreams have left the Prædicators with only a cold senseless taste of hopelessness. Their actions cannot be compared to the fate that awaits us all; it will all be dust. Humanity’s time has come, no longer belonging in the only place they have ever known.
That tenet disturbs the Ecclesiarchy for not only does it deny the existence of their God-Emperor but also all that He opposes, and all that He supposedly defends us against. It puts the Praedicators at odds with the Adeptus Mechanicus, and particularly challenges the Techmarines within their ranks who have sworn ancient pacts with the Omnissiah. To find a follower of the Imperial Cult not openly hostile to what they consider such blasphemy seems impossible. And should the Praedicators sow their thoughts into the mind of one receptive to their message… that would be the darkest day indeed. The Praedicators reject the concept of the God-Emperor because to perpetuate such an idea - of a deity that can save us from the unsavable - only serves to deny that we are alone, and hopeless in the grandest of schemes.
Realisation of the inevitable fate that belongs to us all is creeping into our galaxy, like the tendriled Void Stalker of the Warp approaching their prey. Aside from perhaps He who now sits on the Golden Throne mankind could never fathom, fully understand, or explain fate; but it is nearly upon them all, and the Praedicators believe that it will become known as a blessed release once every citizen of the Imperium realises that their fate is no longer in anyone’s hands.
The Praedicators have no particular hatred of Xenos races, though they will gladly extinguish them if given the chance. Though all Xenos are dangerous to mankind, they are considered neither good nor evil. The greatest of the other species are merely incomprehensible, cosmic forces, that notions of morality have no significance to. They exist in cosmic realms beyond our understanding, and cannot serve as a bulwark against the darkness - but may by their mere existence hasten its encroachment. By this simple logic, they must die if mankind is to cling on a little longer in this uncaring galaxy.
While the Deathwatch and Ordo Xenos’ mode operati is considered narrow and flawed, for individual Prædicators to be assigned to a Watch Station or Fortress is celebrated, as the destruction of the Inhuman is seen as one of the last remaining noble causes in the galaxy. In the darkest millennium it needlessly stands out with towering majesty to give hope to those that have none.
Prognosticators
Prognosticators are hybrid officers fulfilling the role of Librarian, alongside tasks more traditionally assigned to the Chaplaincy in other Chapters. While the Praedicators’ Chaplains play a larger role in the recruiting and training of new aspirants, the Prognosticators guide and shepherd the veteran Brethren, administering to the psionic and mental well-being of the Chapter's warriors.
These dour warriors are the seers of the Chapter, reading their brothers’ dreams or scrying for divination of the future, granting the squads and companies they are attached to an edge for the coming battle. The Chapter takes the readings seriously, so much so that on some occasions, the Prognosticators have successfully counselled against the Chapter becoming embroiled in a particular war. This can prove problematic, as it heaps greater suspicion upon an already mistrusted Chapter. At times this balancing act has even led to companies taking part in conflicts they know will end in defeat.
Upon a Prognosticator’s armour, pendants, and badges of office can be found Chthonic marks and runes engraved into the surface. These are not purely decorative, as they serve to channel and concentrate the Prognosticator’s psychic powers.
Given their role as wards of the psionic and spiritual health of the Prædicators, it is a rare thing indeed for a Prognosticator to take the Apocryphon Oath, and serve a Vigil of the Long Watch with the Deathwatch, the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Xenos. In accepting a Prognosticator into his Watch Fortress, a Watch Commander gains the services of an individual of unique skill and ability. His knowledge of both the Librarian’s arts and the duties of the Chaplain are of course valuable. Yet the greatest of the Prognosticators are able to extend their ministrations to all of the Battle-Brothers they serve alongside, inspiring each and every one to epic deeds of courage, and diverting the flow of history so that these warriors can return to their chapters as heroes. It is said that it is only by the actions of those few Prognosticators who have taken the Oath that the Prædicators have gained any reputation as trustworthy allies whatsoever.
Apothecaries
The most solemn of individuals tasked with the most solemn of tasks; it is their role to mind the physical wellbeing of their battle-brothers. Not all injuries, however, can be detected with a Narthecium scan. A medic from any other chapter might be oblivious to the emotional damage that eats away at the Praedicators. The Void Born Apothecary, however, knows only too well the torment that his brothers endure, for they too are emotionally scarred from their nightmares.
Techmarines
Those amongst the Prædicators with an affinity for technology are dispatched to Mars, honouring ancient pacts formed with the Adeptus Mechanicus millennia ago upon their founding. There they are initiated into the Martian tech-cults to become Techmarines. This process divides the brothers' duality complex into a triality nightmare, but it is acknowledged as a necessary process. Without Techmarines the Prædicators would be left unable to tend to the machine spirits, to observe the rites that ensure continued operation of their wargear, to repair damage taken on the field of battle, or to attend to the needs of the Fleet.
After their training on Mars they return even more mysterious and capricious, aloof and distant. Their inscrutable ways are not easily understood by most of the battle-brothers. For many they do not understand themselves, lost in doubt, dwelling on the idea that if even their Machine-God may not be eternal then their new-found faith cannot be real. Prædicator Techmarines struggle for their entire lives to unravel their three competing ideologies: the Liber Mechanicus and the Omnissiah; the Chapter’s sacred duty; and its nihilistic creed. Eternity becomes their supreme desire, fearing that nothing is real that is not eternal.
The Prognosticators that discern their dreams tell of only vague impressions of a sleep-addled mind but they all tell the same story. It is no ordinary nightmare. There is a prison deep below the surface, and something that stands a mile high but moves like flesh and blood. A rustle of wings, and a set of claws; how small the Techmarines stand beside those claws... They feel him beneath the sand, they see his dreams, and so they are consumed by another fear to be believed absolutely. Yet they cling to their visions for they sometimes reveal the location of priceless relics and STC files waiting to be found. In the end the fear and the doubt is all incidental, inevitable, and something to be borne stoically at all costs.
Dreadnoughts
The mightiest fallen Prædicators, those whose souls blaze most fiercely in denial of the dying of the light, are preserved and held back a while longer from their final rest. The restless memories of the ancient heroes who pilot these war machines can extend back to the founding years of their Chapter and its earliest history. They are revered by other Space Marines, not just as potent warriors, but also as exemplars who have endured and continue to resist millennia of hauntings from all that they have seen, and all they have dreamt. Unlike the interred veterans of other Chapters, these courageous warriors and fallen heroes prefer not to sleep within the ancient crypts alongside their deceased brothers in arms. Instead war continuously calls them into the service of the Imperium.
House Vibro
Tumblr media
A once great house of the Navis Nobilite whose family estate was located within the Imperial Palace on Terra, House Vibro is now considered nothing more than a pauper house by all those in the Segmentum Solar.
Their fall from grace was a result of petty rivalry, political subterfuge, and social maneuvering.
An event known as The Tainting came about as agents of rival House Numa tricked a key heiress of House Vibro into a marriage of state with the little-known House Nostromo. A marriage of convenience intended to consolidate power and grow the fortunes of House Vibro was revealed as a fateful error, as the insanity within the bloodline of Nostromo entered their once idyllic family tree. The repercussions took generations to reveal themselves. By the time that it became clear how many of the matriarch’s great-grand-children bore the now-undeniable genetic flaw, it was too late; for the two Houses had become inseparably intertwined.
House Vibro abandoned their estate, seeking to escape the socio-political fallout and begin their legacy anew in a system where their reputation might not be forever marred by the insanity of House Nostromo. Having traversed the stars to find a new home, eventually establishing their small palace in orbit around Ulthar in the Ainu System; it was there, over many centuries, that they slowly adapted to the void, growing spindly-limbed, willowy-tall, and with a bluish tinge to their skin.
They conducted business by bartering their services to the captains of any vessel or fleet in need of Navigators: merchants, miners, scavengers, prison ships, darkholds, occasionally Rogue Traders, and many years later the Prædicators. The Veiled Region was tumultuous at best, and House Vibro quickly earned the reputation that there were no better Navigators to be had if a captain’s heart was set on going through it.
The Prædicators were in dire need of expertise in mapping some of the most unstable and unpredictable areas of space within the Veiled Region, and House Vibro in turn could utilise the political capital and prestige they would gain from working alongside the Adeptus Astartes. Their association has remained intact since the start of the Astartes’ purgatory sentence, and upon successfully mapping some of the most dangerous areas within the Veiled Region, House Vibro now holds an exclusive Charter Navigae which means that they alone provide a Navigator for every ship in the Void Heralds’ fleet. An unspoken term of the contract involves the occasional lapses into madness shown by the descendants of long-dead Nostromo: with a certain rate of attrition only to be expected among the Navigators, the House takes pains to provide several replacements to each fleet, as well as a special attache to smooth over any diplomatic incidents. Navigators seconded to oversight roles include Novator Italki Vibro, who personally oversees the Cetus despite its current lack of readiness for Warp-space jumps.
The Astartes of the Praedicators and the Navigators of House Vibro share a grim fatalism when it comes to matters regarding the nature of reality and the likely fate of mankind. Few would understand this shared common belief, and it may well be the foundation upon which their long and successful association stands. They both consider one another a most welcome asset, and for the Prædicators at least one their bond with House Vibro is one of the few true alliances they have.
House Vibro shares with the Chaplains of the Praedicators information gleaned from across their extended family network. With the sons and daughters of the House serving alongside merchant and miner captains, scavenger leaders, prison-ship operators, and even the few Rogue Traders they conduct business with openly, there is much to be learned and passed on.  To the Chaplains, the Navigators are a bountiful source of information from across the breadth of the stars, helping them to discern what possible threats they may face, what is occurring in the wider galaxy, and (most importantly) where they should direct their efforts in the never-ending search for possible new recruits.
In return the Lord Commander attaches a ten man squad of Prædicators to the House as bodyguards which are referred to as the Starblades.  Apart from regular guard duties, the Starblades may be called upon to train or lead the troops of House Vibro, undertake covert operations on their behalf, or be present aboard one of the many Vibro trading vessels. The Starblades are sworn to serve the Novator of the house as they would the Lord Commander. Because of this ancient alliance, the Void Stalker that is the symbol of the Praedicators  is also depicted on the Vibro family crest.
Amongst the surviving elders of the House, scant few recall an earlier time when another promising alliance - likewise built upon convenience and the lust for power - turned to ash and madness as the true extent of what they had bound themselves too became apparent. The Praedicators’ visions are silent on this matter, or perhaps being deliberately withheld from their allies. Only time will tell if the most ancient of Navigators in House Vibro can see something that the Novator does not. For now, officially at least, the binding of House and Chapter remains a rare source of pride and rekindled hope.

Gene-seed
The descendants of the line of Guilliman, through the legacy of the Silver Skulls, bore Gene-seed renowned for its stability. So it was upon the founding of the Prædicators, though some may whisper that the legacy of enduring wholeness died with the first Lord Commander’s gene-kin. Whether the Gene-seed is now considered pure or aberrant, it is true that its incorporation only exacerbates the distinguishing features of the typical Void Born recruit: drawn features, pallid skin, and a characteristically haughty air.
It was not long after the Chapter’s founding that the Catalepsean Node in many aspirants began to exhibit signs of a peculiar mutation. Operationally, it still controls the Marine’s circadian rhythms and responses to any kind of sleep deprivation, allowing them to stay awake at full effectiveness for days at a time. Unusually, they often prefer to do so; for when they sleep they are consumed with potent, disturbing, and dark dreams, overwhelming them with dread. Prognosticators scry these dreams to glean small hints of the future, whose own dreams travel out so much further, giving them all cold black dancing in their eyes.
The Apothecaries do what they can to ease the burden of such nightmares. Those who find them all too much and are slowly driven insane are led away in pentagrammically warded chains to a chamber deep in the bowls of Cetus, where they will mutter nonsensically for their eternity about what placid island of ignorance we live in among black seas of infinity. Prognosticators study their cryptic words and piece together the dissociated pieces of knowledge revealed therein - opening up terrifying vistas of reality, and learning of our frightful position therein.
Primaris Marines
Nearly every Space Marine created since the First Founding possesses nineteen specialised organs derived from their Chapter’s unique gene-seed. The Primaris Marines, however – originally engineered by the Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl on the orders of Roboute Guilliman – are implanted with a further three. It was the Sangprimus Portum, a device containing potent genetic material harvested from the Primarchs, that allowed for this breakthrough. Entrusted to Cawl by Guilliman shortly after the Second Founding, this device resulted in a new breed of Adeptus Astartes that were deployed en masse in the Ultima Founding. Due to Cawl’s interpretation of his orders and the millennia-spanning labour of his task – during which Guilliman was injured and suspended in stasis – the secrets of these new Primaris organs were not released until late in the 41st Millennium. Despite being ostracized and cast out as pariahs, ultimately, as with most Chapters, the Prædicators received envoys of the Primarch.
Initially the Primaris were universally met with mistrust, although in each case the reasons were different. The first wave brought mistrust and suspicion down upon themselves, with their oft-repeated claims that the Praedicator’s own Primarch Roboute Guilliman had returned, an event that seemingly was not envisaged by the Chapter’s Prognosticators. The second wave was shunned because of the Chapter Cult itself – could these fresh symbols of resurgent hope ever truly understand that the ending is nigh? With time, those Primaris who have experienced the same nightmares in their sleep-addled brains as any Firstborn battle-brother have grown to be accepted and even well-received, though lingering doubts remain as to whether any of them could fall into madness - and what does it say of them that they cannot fully embrace what it is to know of the Void?
At present, the Chapter’s Cult has been reluctant to fully embrace the Primaris as equals. The Chaplains, Prognosticators and Apothecaries of the Primaris are if anything made even less welcome than their ordinary brothers, as they are seen as lacking the ability to empathise with the Firstborn when it comes to the mental torture they risk with every sleep cycle. Time will tell as to whether the Primaris become full and true Denizens of the Deep, or whether they will be left to quietly wither away and be forgotten. That said, there are those that fear the Primaris for another reason entirely; namely, that they represent the fulfilment of a long-held belief that the End of Days is nigh. Certainly, enough has happened to make some within the Chapter believe the end is coming far sooner than they had previously gleamed, and with Primarichs returning and Custodes abroad once more, perhaps in time the Primaris will be seen not as unwelcome outsiders, but the fulfilment of a prophecy scryed ten millennia ago?
Power Armour
Even with gene-seed implantation complete, there is one final stage that must take place before an aspirant can be called a Prædicator– he must be clad in the distinctive sea green armour. The enclosing suits worn by all Space Marines are made from thick ceramite plates that would be cumbersome but for electrically motivated fibre bundles that replicate the movements of the wearer and supplement his strength. The last gene-seed organ to be implanted in a Space Marine – the black carapace – rests beneath the skin, itself fitted with neural sensors and transfusion ports. These plug-in points mesh with Space Marine armour, linking the wearer’s nervous system to his suit’s mind-impulse controls and turning the suit into a second skin that moves with all the speed and precision of the battle-brother’s own body. Without the carapace, Space Marine armour is almost impossible to use, and it is therefore the most distinctive feature of a battle-brother and the true mark of the Adeptus Astartes. There are several marks of power armour with significantly differing appearances.
Having existed as a Chapter since the 33rd Millennium the Prædicators have collected a large assortment of older marks of armour. All of which have been maintained by skilled artificers who are not Space Marines, but servants who spend their lives working for the Chapter. Comparatively you will usually find other Chapters reserve the rights to wear these ancient suits of armour that have been lavishly restored to the ceremonial guards or elite units. The Prædicators on the other hand do not, and it is common to see Prædicators wear a multitude of older types of armour as well as suits composed of many different marks of armour.

The Science of LED Grow Lights for Your Indoor Garden
Indoor Gardening isn’t exactly a new thing, but LED’s are changing the way we light our indoor gardens.  LED lights are more efficient than traditional fluorescent and incandescent lights.  That’s because LED lights convert nearly all of their energy (95%) into light, while other lights turn a significant amount of energy into heat.  But, there’s another very important reason that LED’s are more efficient when it comes to growing plants.  With LED lights, we have the rather unique ability to customize the type of light that is emitted, and that means we’re not wasting energy to create light that doesn’t help our plants grow.  At the end of this article, you’ll understand the science behind why spyder grow light series come in many different colors, as well as why some LED grow lights cost so much more than others.
Plants Only Use the Visible Light Spectrum for Photosynthesis
It’s important to know that plants only use visible light (the colors of light that we see every day) for photosynthesis. However, as the chart below demonstrates, the complete spectrum of light is far greater than just the visible light spectrum.  On the outer edge of the visible light spectrum is Ultraviolet (UV) light and Infrared Radiation (IR).  UV light is the invisible light emitted by the sun and other sources that will cause sunburns when we don’t wear sunblock.  IR light can only be seen with special equipment, like night-vision goggles.  Even further out from the visible light spectrum are light waves that we don’t traditionally think of as light.  These include X rays, Microwaves and even Radio Waves.
One of the most important things to understand is that scientists have demonstrated over and over again that plants only absorb visible light for photosynthesis.  Plants do react to other forms of light like UV, but that reaction is typically negative.  I’m told that marijuana growers actually use UV light to induce the production of psychoactive chemicals like THC, which seem to be produced in part as a defense mechanism against the damaging effects of UV light to the plant.
What is PAR?
PAR stands for “photosynthetically available radiation.”  PAR is made up only of visible light, because this is the only light that plants use for photosynthesis.
For decades, many indoor growers have used Lumens to measure a grow light’s efficacy, but the industry is getting smarter and turning to PAR.  Lumens are used to measure the brightness of a lamp to the human eye.  But plants and people see light differently.  Humans see yellow and green more brightly than other colors.  Therefore, yellow and green lamps may have higher Lumen values than red and blue lights that put out just as much actual light, and which plants are likely to respond better to.
PAR measures all light from the visible light spectrum equally, and does not measure light outside of the visible light spectrum, which does not help the plant photosynthesis.  So, for plants, the PAR value of a light is currently the best basic measurement of a grow light’s brightness.  Accurate PAR meters are quite expensive and generally cost $500 or more.  Inaccurate PAR meters can be purchased for much less, but there’s really no point to owning an inaccurate PAR meter.
The best way to get PAR values for your 400W LED grow light, assuming you don’t want to purchase your own PAR meter, is to check with your reputable grow light manufacturer or provider for the PAR rating of their lights.
How Much PAR do My Plants Need to Grow?
The amount of PAR your plants require depends on what you are growing, as well as how far away from your plants the light is.  Generally speaking, leafy greens like lettuce only need a PAR value of ~200, whereas tomatoes and other plants that flower and produce fruit require 400-500 or more PAR.  Unless you place your 600W LED grow light right on top of your produce, you will need an even higher PAR rating from your grow light, to take into account the distance between your plant and the light source.
In the example below, you can see a very powerful grow light that puts out nearly 1,900 PAR (measured in umol) 8 inches from the source.  Very few lights put out this much PAR, and they are typically quite expensive.  This light will emit 1,900 umol every second.  But at 23 inches from the source, the strength of the light is reduced to 890 umol.  The PAR value is reduced further and further as you get further from the light source.  When we get to 6 feet away from the light source, our PAR value is down to ~100umol, which means we would have trouble growing even lettuce well.  So, always make sure you understand not just the PAR emitted from the light, but that every 8 inches or so away from your light, the PAR value will be reduced by ½ or more.
There are many inexpensive grow lights on the market that make big claims, but they will ultimately leave their owners disappointed.  This issue is especially rampant on the internet.  Remember to check the PAR value of any light you purchase.  Also, remember to take into account how far your light will be from your plant to ensure there is enough photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) for your plant to flourish.
Leafy Greens require 200 PAR for proper growth
Tomatoes, cucumbers and other flowering/fruiting vegetables require 400-500 PAR
Fruiting Trees should be given 600 PAR or more
What is the Temperature of Light I Should Use?
Interestingly, ‘Kelvin temperature’ is the metric used to describe the visual color that a light emits.  As you can see in the chart below, ‘warmer’ light temperatures that have a red color have a lower Kelvin rating.  On the other end of the spectrum are ‘cooler’ temperature lights which have a blue color and higher Kelvin rating.
Different temperatures of light have different impacts on plants.  Generally, higher temperatures (blue) light encourages photosynthesis which leads to bushy plants that don’t feel inclined to elongate and reach for more light.  This is great if you want to grow in a compact space.  Lower temperature (red) light reduces photosynthesis and signals to plants that that it’s time to flower and produce fruit.  Plants put under a red light will also be more inclined to stretch and grow taller, as opposed to growing bushier and more compact.
IGWorks focusses on providing full spectrum lights with a natural color temperature of between 4500K-6500K as these are most pleasing to the eye.  They also allow plants to grow bushy and compact, without hindering the ability of plants to flower and fruit.
What Color of Light Should I Use?
LED lights can come in almost any color.  Plants respond most to red and blue light.  Interestingly, plants generally respond less well to green light.  In fact, the reason that plants appear to be green is that they tend to reflect green light, while they absorb other parts of the light spectrum more readily.  This is why a large scale or industrial grower of plants will often use a combination of red and blue lights to photosynthesize their plants.  They don’t want to waste electricity producing green and even yellow light, which plants use less effectively.
However, for those of us growing produce in our living spaces, it’s probably worth the extra pennies it costs to produce a nice full-spectrum color that will be more natural and pleasing to the eyes.  Full-spectrum grow lights will often come with a chart, which shows the distribution of blue, green, yellow and red light that is emitted.  See the example below
Choosing the right grow light spectrum for your commercial operation can be a challenge. Many 800W LED grow light suppliers have conflicting information on the topic due to bad marketing or simply a lack of knowledge in plant and light research.
In this article, our light spectrum experts break down what light spectrum is, how plants respond to light, and how light spectrum influences plant growth.
What is Grow Light Spectrum?
Light spectrum is the range of wavelengths produced by a light source. When discussing light spectrum, the term ‘light’ refers to the visible wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see from 380–740 nanometers (nm). Ultraviolet (100–400 nm), far-red (700–850 nm), and infra-red (700–106 nm) wavelengths are referred to as radiation.
As growers, we’re most interested in the wavelengths that are relevant to plants.  Plants detect wavelengths that include ultraviolet radiation (260–380 nm) and the visible portion of the spectrum (380–740 nm) which includes PAR (400–700 nm), and far-red radiation (700–850 nm).
When considering light spectrum for horticultural applications, greenhouse and indoor environments will differ.  With indoor environments your grow light’s spectrum will account for the total light spectrum that your crop receives.  Whereas in a greenhouse you must consider that your plants are receiving a combination of folding grow light series and solar spectrum.
Either way, the amount of each waveband that your crop receives will have significant effects on growth.  Let’s learn more about how this works.
Plants use light for photosynthesis and photomorphogenesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and other organisms convert light energy into chemical energy. Photomorphogenesis refers to how plants modify their growth in response to light spectrum.
One example of photomorphogenesis is a plant bending toward a light source. Light also affects plants’ developmental stages, such as germination and flowering.
The light that plants predominately use for photosynthesis ranges from 400–700 nm. This range is referred to as Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) and includes red, blue and green wavebands.
Photomorphogenesis occurs in a wider range from approximately 260–780 nm and includes UV and far-red radiation.
Although results are dependent on other factors, there are general rules of thumb that you can follow when using light spectrum to elicit different plant responses.
Outlined below is an overview of how each waveband is used for horticultural purposes so that you can trial light spectrum strategies in your own growth environment and with your chosen crop varieties.
Blue light has distinct effects on plant growth and flowering. In general, blue light can increase overall plant quality in many leafy green and ornamental crops.
A minimal amount of blue light is required to sustain normal plant development.  In terms of adjustable spectrum lighting strategies, if we were to equate red light to the engine of your car, then blue light would be the steering wheel.
When combined with other light spectrum wavebands, blue light promotes plant compactness, root development, and the production of secondary metabolites.   Blue light can be utilized  as a growth regulator, which can reduce your need for chemical plant growth regulators (PGRs). Blue light can also increase chlorophyll accumulation and stomatal opening (facilitating gas exchange), which can improve overall plant health.
One example of blue light influencing secondary plant metabolite production is how blue wavebands promote anthocyanin development in leaves and flowers. Increased anthocyanin levels result in more pronounced color.
Blue light also promotes other secondary metabolic compounds associated with improved flavor, aroma and taste. For example, blue light treatments have been shown to improve terpene retention in some varieties of cannabis.
Higher intensities of blue light (>30 μmol·m-2·s-1) can inhibit or promote flowering in daylength-sensitive crops. Blue light does not regulate flowering at low light intensities (<30 μmol·m-2·s-1), so is safe to be applied at night to influence the other plant characteristics listed above
Since chlorophyll does not absorb green light as readily as other wavelengths, many have written off the green waveband as being less important to plant growth. This lower chlorophyll absorption rate, compared to blue and red light, is what makes most plants appear green. Depending on the plant, leaves generally reflect 10-50% of green waveband photons.
In contrast to assumptions, studies of green light in crop production have concluded that green light is important to photosynthesis, and especially in a plant’s lower leaves. Around 80% of green light transmits through chloroplasts, whereas leaves absorb approximately 90% and transmit less than 1% of red and blue light.
So what does this all mean? When light is plentiful, chlorophyll reaches a saturation point and can no longer absorb red and blue light. Yet, green light can still excite electrons within chlorophyll molecules located deep within a leaf, or within chloroplasts lower in the plant’s canopy. And so, green light enhances photosynthetic efficiency—potentially increasing crop yields, during bright light conditions.
Additionally, the ratio of green to blue and red wavelengths signals to the plant a leaf’s canopy position. This can induce morphological changes to maximize light absorption. Green light also plays a role in regulating stomatal aperture (opening and closing of plant pores that make gas exchange possible).
Greenhouse applications require less supplemental green light since plants receive adequate green light from solar radiation.  Indoor environments may benefit more from supplemental green light since no sunlight is present.

Cataracts - What Surgery Is Like
As previously mentioned, I’d developed cataracts and am now going through surgery for them, and have elected to document a bit about what it’s all like from my viewpoint. Mostly because I think it’d make a nice reference for anyone wanting to write with some degree of accuracy about what it’s like from the inside.
This post contains a description of the surgical process involved and what that actually feels like, I’m trying not to be overly graphic but I’m also not elliding over any of the grosser bits (thankfully and surprisingly very little).
First off, a descriptiong of the preliminaries. This started for me with my vision going blurry over the last couple of years, and finally getting around to visiting my old optomitrist when I happened to be in Toronto over last Christmas (as my one up north just retired a couple years ago, and I hadn’t replaced her yet). Of the several potential causes for the vision loss I was experiecing, what I had turned out to be cataracts, of the variety that occurs at the back of the lens and therefor doesn’t cause easily-visible clouding. Which I actually said “Oh, thank god!” to when the optomitrist told me, since they are the absolute easiest thing to fix, while some of the other options (detached retina, or diabetes-related macular degradation, to name a couple) are much less so. Then he gave me a reference to an opthamologist. Thanks to COVID-19, it was this fall before I was finally able to actually get to the clinic and see her.
From my point of view, the process then went pretty quickly. Note that I was at an eye institute that specializes in cataract treatment; everything is contained in one building (a nicely renovated Victorian brick house in the Annex area of Toronto). So all tests and surgery are done on premises.
First appointment there, they did the same sort of vision tests my optomitrist generally does, plus some extra inner-eye photography to get a good look at what was going on. This was done by two different people, one doing the eye-chart related tests and a different one doing the photography. Then I met briefly with my doctor, who looked over my questionnaire (which included questions like whether near, mid, or distance vision was most important to me, and was there a focal distance I particularly needed to be glasses free for, etc.), and that I didn’t need nor have interest in a lens replacement that wasn’t covered under our provincial health care.
A week later I returned for them to perform eye measurement tests, which are used as a basis for manufacturing the replacement lens. They measure the size and shape of the eye, and mostly just involved staring into various machines while photos are taken. The weirdest one, which they did last, involved dripping numbing drops into my eyes, and then lightly pressing a small sensor to multiple places both directly on the eyeballs and then on the closed lids. Something to do with viscosity I’d assume.
And now for a description of the general surgical process, which you can also find summarized (or in more detail) at a number of medical web sites. In my case, it was a pretty basic surgery being performed; the opthamologist needed to make a small slit in the outer layer of my eye, used a tiny probe to break down the lens using ultrasound waves, vacuum out the broken down lens, then use a largish needle to insert a folded plastic lens into the eye, where it would unfold within the capsular space and could be tweaked as needed into the correct position. The cut in the eye is tiny enough that it usually doesn’t even need stitching, apparently.
I was asked to arrive at a specific time, and had to start applying dilating drops to my eyes an hour, half-hour, and five minutes before leaving for the clinic. No nail polish or facial makeup. Preferable wearing comfortable pants and a loosely short-sleeved button front shirt without any undershirt or long underwear beneath it (which turns out to be a “just in case things go crazily sideways” measure; they didn’t actually need to access anything on my torso).
The first step after I arrived at the clinic was being dressed in PPE - one of their own disposable masks to be sure I was wearing a good enough one (that wasn’t coated in whatever mine had picked up outside), a hair cap, a long-sleeved thigh-length blue plasticized robe (it had thumb holes to prevent the sleeves from slipping), and booties over my shoes.
Then I was taken to their surgical floor, where a nurse began a series of eye drops. These included more dilation, an antispectic, and an antibiotic, that I can remember - multiple drops of all. She also gave me a teeny tiny pill to place under my tongue and let dissolved, which contained a small dose of a relaxant/anti-anxiety med (Sorry, she told me the name of it at the time but it’s dropped out of my memory). I didn’t notice any particular change in my mood, but then I’d been counting slow deep breaths since arriving (4 seconds in, 4 seconds out...) to help keep myself relaxed and give myself something to focus on that wasn’t omfg I’m going to be awake during this! Because yeah, not having a clue what it was going to be like was stressful. Nurse also took my blood pressure to be sure I was fine in that regards, and put a sticker on the gown to remind the doctor that it was my right eye being done that day.
After a brief wait, I was moved into one of the surgical theatres, where there was a dentist chair they sat me in, then connected a blood pressure cuff, fingertip monitor (hence the no nail polish rule) and sensors on the backs of both hands and one ankle (I’m assuming those were measuring a mix of blood oxygenation and heartbeat, with the ankle one making sure my feet were still getting blood when I was spending the surgery in what ended up as a tipped-over-backwards with head lowest position). They then rinsed my eye and the orbital area with bactine (very yellow vision while that happens), then patted the area around the eye dry.
The doctor sat at my head, and applied a medical drape with a pre-cut adhesive-edged opening over my eye, then peeled off a translucent applique that was over the hole. Then they applied medical clamps that held my eyelids in the open position (which thanks to the numbing drops, I didn’t feel at all). A brightly lighted microscope was then positioned over the eye, and I was told to stay as still as possible and stare at the red dot in the lighted area. The doctor then did the surgery as described above. From my point of view, there was very little to feel; occasional dull pressure, some random coldness that I believe was the eye being irrigated. I could hear the occasional very quiet noise the probe made as the lens was sucked away, but mostly it was just staring at the red light as well as I could while my vision distorted oddly and I continue counting breaths. Within what felt like no more than 5-10 minutes (if that), it was all over with.
They had me continue to lie there for a couple minutes while they peeled off the drape, wiped the eye area clean, and removed all the sensors, then a brief rest before having me sit up.
I blinked once or twice, and... DAMN! Sudden near-perfect vision in an eye that hasn’t seen clearly without help since I was in single digit ages. And the saturation. The detail.
Now, my left eye of course still has a cataract (it gets treated next week). I’d been telling people for a while that basically all my right eye was seeing was blur, so my left eye was doing most of the seeing, and I thought my left eye wasn’t anywhere near as bad as my right. With my right eye now seeing perfectly, I could now alternate opening eyes from side to side, and see just how badly (and irregularly) blurred and yellowed the left lens actually is. To which I can only saw, WTF, how was I even seeing anything at all!?
Then they had me sit for a while in the waiting area, where the doctor came and double-checked I was fine, and gave me a kit in a plastic bag of a card that identifies that I have an interocular lens (and info about it), a prescription for two different eye drops (antibiotic and anti-inflamatory) which was enough for both this eye and the eye getting operated on next week, and a shield to wear at night for the first five nights, to be sure I don’t accidentally rub it or put pressure on it.
Then I put on sunglasses (because hugely dilated eye) and walked out.
Side note - they won’t do your operation unless you have a ride home arranged; because that tiny pill means you’re in a slightly altered state, among other reasons. Good thing it was my brother and not, say, a taxi, since among other things it took us three drugstores to find one that actually had both kinds of eyedrops in stock, yay super fun.
Also, remember me talking about the starburst rays I was seeing around lights due to cataracts? While my eye was still dilated (which lasted until after midnight) I was seeing what I can only describe as ‘Ferris wheels’ - a burst of  rays expanding out like the spokes of a wheel, and ending in an uneven ring of dots of bright light, each wheel matching the colour of the light causing it. Looked wild at night. Thankfully that effect has now gone away.
Had a follow-up appointment this morning where they did an eye chart and the rebounce test where they puff air at your cornea, and the opthamologist says the vision in that eye tested as 20/20 (WOOO! Finally something good with that number). I can see sharply and clearly for blocks from the mid-range on out. Sadly when I try to use my computer, tablet, etc (near-range and close vision) the eye can’t focus down far enough; some of that may improve over the next month or two as the eye continues healing, and adapting to the lens. In the meantime my sister suggested I try a pair of her reading glasses and, yay, that worked. I am now planning that after my follow-up appointment for next week’s surgery on the left eye, I’ll run around and pick up 2-3 pairs of reading glasses of various strengths (which I will get will depend on what seems to work best with arm’s length and close-in viewing), to carry me through until I go back to an optomitrist in a month or three, and get my vision evaluated to see if I need actual prescription reading and/or far distance glasses.
In the meantime, apart from computer/tablet use, I am glasses free. I can’t even remember ever having such sharp, clear, and saturated vision (since I’ve been in glasses for such a long time). You know the “oh, trees are made of leaves!” effect? I am getting that with every single thing I look at. Oh, that’s how much grey is in my hair? Weird, I never noticed this wall was textured before. Oh geez, that text over there is so small and yet I AM READING IT. I mean, even with glasses I probably was never able to read that from this distance! Etc ad infinitum.
It’s just so, so nice.
And that’s with just one eye finished. I am now really looking forward to next week’s surgery. Stress? What stress!?

Trouble arises in VR headsets, with an difficulty called the "display screen door" effect. In essence, the decrease the most decision that a screen is capable of showing, and the nearer you take a seat to the screen, the easier it's miles to look its individual pixels. In the case of VR headsets, it makes the photograph appearance as although it's being visible through mesh, and it's why 2019's new VR headsets have seen resolution upticks. When some thing's that close to your eyes, you can extra honestly see the distinction.
The identical problems practice to monitors as best 2k monitor, simply across a bigger viewing distance than inches from your eyes. The difficult bit is that viewing distance isn't fixed; it depends on the scale and format of your desk. Whether you could make out the difference in resolution on a 4K panel as opposed to, say, a 1440p one (that's 2,560 through 1,440 pixels) relies upon in your eyesight, that viewing distance, and the screen length. The display screen size, at a 4K decision, calculates out to a certain range of ppi, in essence the pixel density of the display screen. You can see the way it scales right here at each commonplace resolution...
4K Monitor Density Chart Lucky for us, we don't have to do any of the hard math on our very own. The crew over at Puget Systems has designed a useful Google Sheet that will automatically assist you discern out the optimal display length and backbone for you, relying to your personal level of visible acuity. All you need to do is plug in your target display screen length and determination, the gap from the panel to your eyes, and the specifics of your eyesight. You can then strive one of a kind numbers and see how the output changes, helping you discern out if a sure display screen length or viewing distance makes more or much less feel. (If you haven't been to the attention physician currently and don't realize your prescription strength, a few more hand calculations, the use of some of the formulas in this page, are all you want.)
Of direction, much less scientifically, you can additionally take a look at 4K panels of various display screen sizes in a nearby keep to peer if you can tell the difference. But you'll want to observe the equal display photo, scaled the same amount, to peer a significant evaluation, and that might not usually be practical. Still, to summarize: earlier than you purchase a 4K display, make sure you'll genuinely be able to see the advantage of the elevated pixel density for your precise seating setup. Have 20/15 vision, already own a 27-inch, 2,560-by way of-1,440-pixel (1440p) monitor, and could sit three feet from the display screen? A 4K display probably won't provide a big enough increase in readability to justify the price at the equal display screen length and distance. It all depends on how big your 4K panel, how near or how a long way you'll take a seat, and your eyesight.
What Screen Type of 4K Monitor Should You Buy? Before you purchase a new 4K reveal, you have to understand the advantages and downsides of the distinctive display technologies that electricity them. Most of the time, it's smooth to find what kind of panel a given 4K display has genuinely through searching at the manufacturer spec sheet. Let's run via the most not unusual kinds.
Vertical Alignment (VA). VA panels are a number of the oldest in the sport. But they're nonetheless around due to the fact, despite higher display technology coming along for the reason that, they "just paintings." VA panels provide a number of the highest assessment ratios out of doors of OLED ones (more about which in a moment), and they additionally provide higher viewing angles and shade reproduction than TN panels. However, they're also the slowest of all of the display technology, supplying the pokiest reaction instances and enter-lag numbers of the bunch. That makes them subpar for gaming.
Twisted Nematic (TN). TN presentations, on the opposite hand, are extremely fast in phrases of pixel response, averaging anywhere between 1-millisecond (ms) and 5ms response instances, and they may be relatively less expensive to supply versus different panel types, making them perfect for gamers. The tradeoffs with TN, however? Uneven coloration production, confined off-center viewing angles, and ho-hum contrast ratios. That's quite a piece to surrender inside the call of velocity, which means that which you'll usually see 4K TN presentations only in gamer-centric fashions.
LG 4K Monitor In-Plane-Switching (IPS). IPS panels are common in the global of 4K presentations. They tend to be barely greater costly to provide than VA or TN panels, however they provide the best "all-round" experience for most users: strong color duplicate, moderately quick response instances, and the widest viewing angles of any display type outside of OLED. This comes at a fee, though, with IPS fashions costing everywhere among $50 and $three hundred extra than their equivalent non-IPS counterparts.
Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED). OLED is the newest display technology in stand-alone video display units. Offering a theoretically countless comparison ratio, fantastic shade for film and TV, and extraordinary black degrees for gaming in dark scenarios, OLED appears like a extremely good show generation that each reveal producer need to be pumping out in droves, and in the OLED TV samples we've seen, it looks stupendous.
But although 4K OLED panels have been all of the rage for numerous years now inside the TV marketplace (and are starting to make their way into computer displays), we haven't seen a single OLED desktop computer screen released outdoor of the professional-level Asus ProArt PQ22UC, a 21.6-inch 4K panel at $three,999, and the Alienware fifty five OLED. In the case of the latter, because of burn-in troubles and problems with brightness, we rated this "monitor" as extra of an OLED TV that happens to run at 120Hz, as opposed to a panel you'd be in all likelih

Bubble Bobble (Firebird/Hit Squad, 1987/1991)
Tumblr media
Gallup all formats individual formats chart, Computer & Video Games Issue 118, September 1991
Tumblr media
Bubbles burst. This is the last Sinclair ZX Spectrum game to reach UK #1, and the last on a format with Sinclair in its name in general. That computer has been a huge part of the journey so far, and now it will be no part at all. Sinclair got bought by Amstrad at the height of the Spectrum’s success, and Amstrad failed to make a successful successor with either name. From there, it was a long road to manufacturing TV set top boxes and forming the vague background to the UK’s version of The Apprentice, hidden outside of a carefully formed bubble of shiny glass.
Appropriately, it’s not a new game we say goodbye with, but a throwback to happier days. Taito released Bubble Bobble to arcades in 1986 and the Spectrum conversion arrived in 1987. It’s a budget re-release that sent it to the top of the charts four years later and, to highlight the delay, a year after its sequel achieved the same. The success of Rainbow Islands: the Story of Bubble Bobble 2 presumably played a part in the decision to make something of its predecessor again, and probably in the interest of players too. Many must have been playing this it the first time with the knowledge that dragons Bub and Bob would soon be real boys, producing rainbows instead of bubbles.
Tumblr media
In some ways Bubble Bobble was already an old-school arcade game even for 1987. Its set of single screen levels, where exiting the bottom of the screen loops around to the top, recalls Pac-man (1980) and particularly the original, pre-Super, Mario Bros. (1983). In common with the latter, Bubble Bobble is a platform game without any exploration element, and has enemies whose defeat takes two stages of player action, and who recover if you are not quick enough. In Mario Bros., you have to flip enemies from a distance before rushing in to finish them off. In Bubble Bobble, it’s the reverse -- you trap them in a bubble up close, then catch them before they float away too far. It sets up a smart risk and reward interplay that makes for an even more concentrated stream of interesting in-the-moment choices than Rainbow Islands, even if it doesn’t have the same range or heft.
Tumblr media
Positioning, planning and reacting are the focus, with the occasional speed-rush interlude via power-ups which send water gushing down the screen, sweeping dragon and enemy alike along its path. Over the course of 100 levels there’s some invention in platform and enemy positioning, but Bubble Bobble remains a game which gives you one simple thing to do and tests it over and over again. On the Spectrum it’s even more cut back and functional, the relentlessly chirping music the closest it gets to the cuteness of Rainbow Islands. The game starts with the coin-op style display of a number of credits up on the screen and is a picture of a particular type of old arcade machine at its most unadorned. Roll up and test yourself on this one skill, one screen at a time, seeing how long you can keep consistent.
Tumblr media
It’s a bite-sized, focused vision of what a game is which we’ve barely seen on AAA as popular computer games pushed at new limits of what they could be. In some ways, Bubble Bobble’s vision is one that feels more familiar than some of its immediate successors, such is the lasting cultural impact of simple-to-grasp arcade games. When films continue to have bleep-bloop sound effects to represent games, something like this is more than likely what is in mind. Its simplicity still appeals; it is well into the top half of most enjoyable games that I’ve played so far, and might stay there through the whole project. Even so, I’m glad that the greater ambitions of those creating games took us out of that bubble.

I Promise
You happily sat at the counter munching away at your toast. You had only 25 minutes before Tony would walk in and begin school. You honestly hated being home schooled but you had given up on arguing with him anymore over the subject. In the Stark Tower, Wanda was the closest thing to a best friend. Sure, she was a few years older than you but seeing you both had very similar powers you both tend to train and work together, instantly creating an unbreakable bond.
''You know that's cheating'' Wanda says from behind you, walking into the kitchen herself to grab some left over toast you weren't going to finish off. You raised your eyes at her in mock confusion.
''I have no idea what you are talking about'' You had stated in between mouthfuls of food, a bit of it falling down and onto your plate. She just laughed and shook her head at your antics, pouring herself a glass of orange juice.
Before Wanda could even grab the orange juice, you slid it further down the counter top in your mind, peacefully eating your toast which raised more suspicion from Wanda.
She had reached for it one last time when you had successfully knocked it from her grasp, smirking behind your piece of bread. Wanda had playfully rolled her eyes at you and decided to use her powers as well, finally taking back the juice from you with little effort.
''Hey!'' You called out. Wanda, however, just raised her eyebrows at you with her own smirk.
''Should have focused a little harder'' She teased, her Russian accent still strong every time she spoke. Instead you settled for the mature response, sticking your tongue back out at her.
''Y/N, Mr Stark is on his way with some important news'' J.A.R.V.I.S speaks up from the ceiling causing you to roll your eyes.
''Of course he is...'' You muttered under neath your breath, even though you knew J.A.R.V.I.S could clearly pick it up.
Not a minute later, the sliding doors to the kitchen had opened and in walked Tony Stark with his hands crossed against his chest. Someone hadn't had their morning coffee yet.
''Get dressed, I need you to come with me in a few hours to meet a new candidate'' Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion at this, a new candidate? Like for the avengers?
''Seriously?'' You asked, still not quite believing him. You guys hadn't had any new recruits since Wanda, Vision and Hawkeye.
''Yes, seriously, I expect you to be ready by then'' As Tony turned to walk away, you mock saluted him causing Wanda to giggle. You smiled at her and happily took a piece of her toast and smiled with the food in your mouth, a playful frown etching across her face.
''Bye babe!''
-
Tony had told you to wait in the car. Like hell you did whatever he told you to do. You might be his adoptive daughter but you weren't going to follow his orders. You hoped out of the car as Happy called out from behind you, getting out himself to stop you.
''Y/N, Tony specifically said to-'' You just stopped and turned around, sending an innocent smile his way once he realised he was frozen in his spot, not being able to move a muscle.
''Y/N...'' He warns with a glare, soon realizing you were causing this. You shrugged it off with one last innocent smile that soon turned into a glare.
''Tony took me with him for a reason, and I want to know why'' You spoke out coldly, feeling a sense of anger rise within. You rarely ever got angry, only when things were being kept from you. This was surely one of those times.
You smiled again, pivoted around and walked inside the building, walking over to the elevators. You had no idea what apartment number he went to but it wouldn't be too hard to track him. You drawn power from the elevator shaft causing the lights to flicker slightly, your eyes closed as a map of the building soon entered your mind. You followed the pathway to it lead you to the 7th floor of the building, stopping just in front of apartment 708.
''That was easy'' You muttered to yourself as you pressed the floor 7 button as the lights soon went back to normal. As soon as the elevator doors opened you walked out, stopping at the front of the door. You knocked once and smiled to yourself when you could see through the door, noticing a silhouette move towards the door.
I plastered a smile across my face as soon as the door opened.
''Hi, I was just wondering if Tony was here at all?'' You asked politely, crossing your hands over behind your back. You began to move your fingers in a circular motion, manipulating the womans mind to invite you insid her home.
''Why don't you come in?'' You smiled at her kindness and smirked to yourself on the inside, allowing yourself to walk past her.
''You have a very lovely home'' You comment, glancing around before quickly moving off down the hallway, following the hushed voices emitting from on of the closed doors. You stopped short in front of the door and rested your ear against it, hearing a little bit of the conversation being said.
''No no no no, no if she knew she would freak out... and when she freaks out I freak out-'' The younger sounding voice was soon cut off by Tony's.
''You know what I think is really cool? This webbing'' You could hear something been tossed through the air and a snatch, meaning something had caught it. With Tony's throwing skills... that's pretty hard to do.
''The strength is off the charts, who manufactured that?'' Tony asked.
''I did'' The younger voice responded, a clattering sound soon following. You readjusted your stance slightly.
''What the hell are they talking about'' You murmured very quietly to yourself so that Tony could not hear. Though you were very unaware that one person in the room could. Peter's eyes furrowed together in confusion once his spidey sense picked up on another sound.
''Climbing the walls, how are you doing that? these gloves...'' This snapped Peter out of his trance.
''Yes I use-''
''Oh lordy can you even see in these?'' Tony exclaims causing a soft chuckle to escape you throat.
''Yes, yes I can, I can'' The younger boy responds as Tony starts making distressed sounds causing you to laugh a little louder than you expected.
''Is someone else here?'' Crap. You soon scurried back from the door when it was swiftly pulled open by Tony himself with a frown on his face. He didn't seem surprised to see you there.
''He can pick up on very quiet sounds, that's a plus'' You just glare in response and decide to walk past Tony and into what seemed to be a teenager's room. Your eyes quickly skimmed over the surroundings before falling short on a brown headed boy roughly your age standing beside a computer.
Your eyebrows furrowed together as your arms crossed over your chest in slight anger. Peter however glanced at you with wide eyes, now believing a girl was actually in his bedroom, and that girl being you.
''Why the hell am I here Tony?'' You puffed.
''Just sit down and keep your mouth shut for a second okay? Just observe'' You had wanted to do something to show how much that commented had angered you but you decided against it, not wanting the boy to see anything. So instead you huffed like a teenager would and decided to sit down on the twin sized bed, Peter watching your every movement with raised eyebrows, still not believing what was going on.
''Why are you doing this?'' Tony asks, taking the boy by surprise.
''I gotta know, what's your MO, what gets you out of that twin size bed every morning'' Peter stares at Tony with a blank expression, soon making his way over towards his bed. You had sitting indian style, allowing enough room for him to sit next to you but instead he sat at the other side, keeping his distance.
''Because...'' He starts, glancing down at his hands nervously before back up towards Tony.
''Because I've been me my whole life, and I've had these powers for 6 months, I read books I build computers'' Peter gestures towards his table, piled over in books and technology junk. Was he a dumpster diver?
''And yeah I would love to play football, but I couldn't then so I shouldn't now'' Tony soon huffs and glances back up at you before facing Peter once again.
''Sure, sure cause you're different''
''Exactly, I can't tell anybody that so I'm not'' Peter, to you, had almost seemed saddened at the thought. He glanced away sadly and briefly made eye contact with you, you immediately sitting up straighter in your position.
''Look... when you can do the things that I can, but you don't...'' With this Tony had also leaned in closer, growing curious himself.
''...And then the bad things happen... they happen because of you'' Your eyes had water slightly in the corner, not believing how deep this kid's soul was. But it saddened yourself once you began to decode the hidden meaning underneath. With your powers, it was sometimes hard for you to sift through people's thoughts and emotions, and you only ever rarely did it. You powers had a tendency to cling onto to peoples thoughts and emotions, allowing them to consume you from the inside out. It took a great power of self control to stop their emotions from flooding in on your own.
''...Your Uncle'' You spoke aloud without meaning too. Peter had turned to face you with a raised eyebrow, even Tony had. Maybe that was why you were here, to figure out Peter seeing as he would be distracted by Tony's inquisition.
''Yeah...'' Was all Peter responded with, not really sure how you knew that about him. With his guard down it had allowed you to invade his personal thoughts, now always something you enjoyed doing.
''Y/N...'' Tony grabs your attention quickly, nodding his head. He had wanted you too. But you felt guilty, you didn't want to invade his head, it wasn't fair.
But you did anyway.
''His holding onto a great deal of grief and guilt over his Uncle's death...'' You murmur out, loud enough for both of them to hear. Peter's eyes widened in shock as soon as he realised what was going on.
You caught of glimpse of something else...
''Mr Stark, what is she doing?'' Peter had asked worriedly, wondering how you had gathered some of the most personal information from him in less than ten minutes on meeting.
''Reading your mind'' With this Peter seemed to jump in shock, a flash of hurt across his brown orbs. He had glanced over to you and for once... you felt yourself falling short for words. Peter had slowly shook his head no at you in a pleading manner. Your eyes softened at the boy, having this overwhelming feeling to protect him.
''That's it'' You lied, seeing the relief quickly flash before Peter's eyes before turning to face Tony who was glancing at you oddly.
''The rest is practically nerdy shit that I can't even comprehend'' You lied smoothly, nothing giving you away. Tony smiled in response and turned to face a relieved Peter.
''So you want to look out for the little guy.. you want to do your part.. make the world a better place..'' Tony drifts off, still sounding hesitant.
''Yeah, yeah, yeah'' Peter responds positively as if Tony had hit the point exactly.
''Just looking out for the little guy...'' You smiled at Peter in awe. Peter's gaze turned to face yours and his breathing caught in his throat once you notice his gaze already on him, locking eyes for a few moments before he glanced down to his hands.
''...That's what it is...'' Peter trails off again, sneaking a glance towards you. Tony soon rises from his seat and walks over to the bed, noticing both you and Peter had not broken your gaze yet. Peter feels Tony taps his leg and soon moves over closer towards you.
Tony places a hand onto Peter's shoulder, glancing over towards you with a knowing look. Oh no. You quickly shook your head no in response, knowing where Tony was going with this.
''Do you have a passport?''
''Tony...'' You trailed off, still shaking your head towards the two.
''No, no I don't even have a driver's license-''
''You've ever been to Germany?'' You rolled your eyes at the on-going conversation.
''No...'' Peter trails off, now looking up towards Tony.
''Oh you'll love it'' You scoffed aloud, gaining both the guys attention. You could see the tricks he was up to and was no way in the least amused. You scooted closer towards Peter, catching him off guard once again.
''Don't listen to him.. serious-'' Of course, he had cut you off.
''I can't go to Germany'' Peter replies, you smiling in response.
''Why?'' Tony asks, you immediately groaning. Peter had glanced between the both of you before settling his gaze back on Tony.
''I got.. homework'' Peter stutter out adorably. Tony, however, sits and rolls his eyes in annoyance.
''Alright, I'm going to pretend you didn't say that''
''No I'm being serious! I can't just drop out of school-'' Peter exclaims as Tony begins to get off the bed.
''Well I guess you better tell Aunt hottie that you're taking a field trip-'' Tony had reached for the door handle but froze once a 'thwip' sound was heard, a piece of webbing sticking Tony's hand to the door. You couldn't but to let out a laugh at the sight, Peter smiling a little at the sound of it before regaining composure.
''Don't tell Aunt May'' He responds seriously. You watched the two stare down each other for a few moments before you could see Tony give in.
''Okay Spider-man''
''Now get me out of this'' Tony says with an annoyed tone, causing you to hide your giggle behind your hand.
''Sorry'' Peter quickly utters out, walking around to quickly cut free Tony's hand.
That was definitely a sight to behold.
-
Both Tony and yourself had made it back to the compound just before dinner. Vision was making his famous stir-fry, the smell immediately hitting your sense as soon as you walked through the door.
''Please tell me you are not serious about this..'' Tony had successfully ignored you the whole ride home but now that you guys were back, he had no where to hide. Tony just sighed, sick of your nagging questions.
''Yes, I am deadly serious'' He responds, walking into the kitchen briefly greeting Vision.
''Hello Y/N, hope you had a safe travel?''
''Splendid'' You replied clipped, your gaze quickly focusing back onto Tony. Vision seemed to get the hint and continued on with the food.
''Tony, stop ignoring me!'' You had raised your voice slightly this time to gain his attention.
''Never, raise your voice at me'' Tony commands using his authoritative tone.
''Call it off...'' You trailed off, talking about Peter. Ton stopped mid walk and turned to face you, a hand raised in a very sarcastic manner.
''...and never try to tell me what to do'' At this you could feel your anger begin to rise, you were drawing energy from the lights, causing them to flicker a little.
Again, Tony froze and turned around to face you, soon realising how emotional you were becoming.
''Y/N...'' He tried to warn, glancing up to the ceiling to notice it was beginning to tremble slightly. With the scene displayed had drawn Wanda, Steve, Clint and a few of the others including Thor.
''Great, who set her off this time'' Thor mutter underneath his voice, rolling his eyes knowing this was only the beginning.
''Really don't need the running commentary right now Thor'' Tony bites back sarcastically, a hint of rudeness clipped in as well.
You could begin to feel your palms warm up, the energy beginning to collect within you. You rarely ever lost control, and you knew how to stop it from ever getting that far. But you were angry, you wanted him to listen and to listen now.
You threw a little ball of energy towards Tony, small enough so that it actually wouldn't hurt him. It sent him a little shock, making him stagger back a little bit. You could feel yourself beginning to calm down, the lights and the ceiling beginning to tremble less and less.
''...Never ignore me''
-
You were kept out of the accords. Wanda had came to you, explaining everything that was going on, asking you if you'd help. You were conflicted, knowing your instincts were to join Captain America to help him. Being a slave to S.H.I.E.L.D your whole life had built up quite a lot of resentment.
Steve had wanted to keep you out of things, not wanting you to feel like you had to choose a side.
But you knew what you were fighting for, you were fighting for justice.
You had flew out with Clint and Wanda, flying out to Germany to meet up with Steve and Bucky, the Russian soldier.
You all had decided to meet up in the Airport carpark, Steve immediately frowning once he saw you hop out of the van followed closely behind Wanda.
''You don't need to be here, this isn't your fight'' Steve spoke up, eyeing you. You shrugged and hopped out of the van, a little skip to your step with a warm smile.
''Yes it is, my whole life I've just been another text subject to S.H.I.E.L.D. They have had control over everything. I'm here for justice so yes... this is my fight'' You responded, Clint smiling proudly at you. Steve glanced between the three of you before slowly nodding his head, agreeing with you.
''How about our other recruit?'' Steve moved on, glancing over towards Clint who smirked.
''All ready to go, just put a little coffee in him...'' Clint walks over to the Van, opening the doors once more to a lying down Scott on the back seat.
''He should be good'' With the sound of the metal door clicking into place, Scott woke up startled, glancing around before quickly coming to his senses. You had folded your arms over your chest as Steve and Anthony seemed to do the same, glancing at each other warily.
''What time zone is this?'' Scott asks as he staggers out of the van, Clint soon closing the Van door closed behind him.
''Captain America?'' Scott seemed to fan boy over Steve in front of him, eagerly shaking his hand. You rolled your eyes in annoyance, realising this may take a while.
''I'll be in the car'' You spoke aloud to no one in particular, walking over towards Bucky. Scott soon turned to face you and smile, his eyes slightly widenning.
''No way, Blue Shield? Test subject 65982?'' You were surprised he had known all of this, but then again, it was for public record.
''Just Blue'' You responded, cringing at the Shield part of your 'superhero' name. He nodded his head in response, still smiling as he turned around to recognise everyone. You sighed once again and walked over towards the car, deciding to hop in the drivers seat seeing as you were soon becoming bored. You took out your phone and scrolled through your gps tracking device.
It had only been a few minutes before your phone had completely turned itself off.
Your ears perked up once you could hear a German announcement echo through the carpark. You turned around and soon hoped out of the car with a worried expression across your face.
''That doesn't sound too good'' You murmur aloud. Bucky glances to you and frowns.
''They're evacuating the airport'' Great.
''Stark?'' Anthony asks, turning to face Steve with a raised eyebrow. You walked away from the car and back over towards the group, deciding to stand beside Scott.
''Stark?'' Scott asks a little worried. You pressed a small button underneath your shirt, allowing your suit beginning to construct over your clothes.
''The one and only'' You spoke up, allowing the vibranium of your suit to cover you from neck to toe.
''Suit up''
-
Steve had quickly ran through the plan with everyone, he decided to have you and Wanda on opposite sides seeing as you both could control things with your mind which could come in handy. No one knew you were here so Cap considered an advantage so he wanted you hidden till the last possible moment.
Once everyone was suited and ready to go, you all took different entry points, you flying over to hide behind one of the garbage trucks near the run way as Cap soon came into view, jogging past you and into the open.
''Wow it's so weird who you run into at the airport, don't you think that's weird?'' You could hear Tony;s voice speak.
''Yeah that's definitely weird'' Your eyes slightly widened at the new voice.
''Hear me out Tony...'' Steve starts.
''The doctor, the psychiatrist... he's behind all of this'' Captain seemed to stop, you assuming someone else had made an appearance.
''Captain''
''Your highness'' T'challa.
''Anyway, Ross gave me 36 hours to bring you in, that was 24 hours ago, can you help a brother out?'' Tony spoke up again, not dropping the pressing issue. You readjusted your stance slightly, becoming slightly more comfortable, the vibranium of your suit rubbing against the back of the truck.
''You're after the wrong guy''
''Your judgement is askew... your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday-''
''And there are 5 more super soldiers just like him'' Captain finishes.
''...I can't let the doctor find him first'' Steve speaks up with hurt evident in his tone.
''Steve... you know what's about to happen'' Natasha spoke up, seeming to sound not too far away from where you were hiding.
''Do you really want to punch your way out of this one?'' As much as you hated to say this, the assassin had a point. You didn't want to go to war against the people you cared about, but you would if you had to in order to do what was right.
''Alright, I've run out of patience, Underoos!'' Your eyebrows crinkled in confusion once you heard the familiar thwip sound passing through the air.
He didn't.
This had angered you.
''You've been busy'' Captain speaks up, obviously referring to the new superhero on the scene.
''And you've been a complete idiot'' You rolled your eye at this statement, beginning to feel the energy collect in the palm of your hands.
''Bringing in Clint, rescuing Wanda from a safe place! She didn't need to... I'm trying to keep you from tearing the avengers apart'' The fear in Tony's voice was noticeable, almost shaking you to your core.
''You did that when you signed'' You could feel the corner of your eyes beginning to well up. You quickly raise a hand to wipe the tear away before it could fall.
''You're going to turn Barnes over! You're going to come with us now because it's us! We're a squad of guys with no puncture about being impolite'' You gulped nervously, knowing that things were about to get messy real soon.
''We found it, the Queen Jet is in hanger 5 runway'' You could hear Anthony speak through your ear piece, a small smile making it's way on your lips.
With that you glanced up to see Clint and Wanda, Clint nodding his head giving you the all clear. He raised his bow and launched an arrow, signalling it was your time to move.
''Alright lang'' Captain spoke up. Once you heard the sound of a THUD you rose from your spot, walking through the back way behind Natasha.
''I believe this is yours Captain America''
The fight soon began, you immediately running up behind Natasha before she could grab a hold of Cap. You kicked her down just as she raised her weapon in Steve's direction, the bullet missing him by a mere inch. He glances over to you and nods before running over to T'challa. Natasha begins to rise again, using her feet to knock you down as she gets up.
''Hun I taught you that move'' She speaks up sweetly, wiping herself into a battle stance. You quickly got up and raised your arms in defense, waiting for her to make her move.
''And I am waiting for you to finish it'' With that being said, she moves to hit you once more, you successfully blocking her advances. You grab onto her arms and throw her onto the ground, creating a ball of energy around her to keep her in place. You soon began to run over to Wanda, seeing as you both could combine your energy to create one big one.
Tony had soon flown over.
''Y/N! What the hell are you doing here!?'' He was far beyond pissed.
''I'm standing for a cause'' You respond, standing beside a fuming Wanda.
''We will talk about this later, you are grounded when we get home'' Tony finishes using his authoritative tone.
''Wanda... I think you hurt Vision's feelings'' This upset the Scarlet witch.
''You locked me up and locked me in my room'' She replies angrily, her accent strong.
''First of all that's an exaggeration and second, I did it to protect you'' Wanda only tilted her head to the side, the background noise of the fight seeming to grow louder and louder.
''Hey Clint''
''Hey man'' he responds, beginning to raise his bow and arrow.
''Clearly retirement doesn't suit you'' Tony speaks up, flying a little further away from us.
''Got tried of playing golf?''
''Played 18, shot 18, can't seem to miss'' He speaks up, quickly firing an arrow pass Tony. You quickly open your palms, letting the little balls of energy magnify.
''Well, first time for everything'' Tony replies as he cute the arrow in half. Clint shrugs and smirks.
''Made you look'' With this Tony soon turned around, a car hitting his shoulder before slamming to the ground.
''Dammit Y/N!'' He curses aloud. Both you and Wanda had started to move your arms, the cars flying out of the carpark and towards Tony.
Once the cars had successfully trapped Tony, Wanda and Clint nodded towards you.
''Y/N, go into the lobby and help with getting Bucky to the Queen Jet'' Cap spoke through the ear piece slightly puffed.
''On it'' You replied, using your hands to levitate yourself in the air and towards where Anthony and Bucky were. You flew through the broken glass to notice them fighting a person in a red and blue spandex.
''Are those wings carbon fire?'' You frowned to yourself once you heard Peter's voice speak up, webbing Anthony to the railing.
''Is this stuff coming out of you?'' Anthony asks slightly disgusted.
''That would explain the impressive flexibility ratio which, gotta say, that's awesome'' You smiled softly to yourself at the geeky side of him shining through. Neither had noticed your arrival yet.
''I don't know if you've been in a fight before but there's usually not this much talking'' Anthony speaks annoyed.
''Peter!'' You call out, him now turning to face you from where he was perched. His owns eyes had widen.
''What are you doing here?'' You ask softly, raising your hands to show him you weren't going to harm him.
''Helping out Mr Stark'' He replies, noticing you taking small steps towards him, your eyes still settled on his.
''You don't need to do this okay? You're not supposed to be apart of this'' You speak up sincerely, feeling the little balls of energy beginning to collect on your palms once again.
''Yes I do'' Peter responds stubbornly, now dropping off his perch to stand right in front of you. You lower your hands and shake your head sadly.
''No, you don't. Go back home Pete'' You spoke softly, your eyes softening as you spoke. However Peter just shook his head towards you and took a step back.
''No way, Mr Stark needs me-''
''I am trying to protect you you idiot!'' You let your emotions get the best of you, a crackle of electricity in the air. Peter's bug eyes seemed to widen slightly at your response, taken aback.
''He should never have recruited you, not like this'' you took a step closer towards him, your eyes never leaving his.
You stared into his eyes for a few more moments before someone clearing their throat broke you both from each others gaze.
''If you two lovebirds are done chit chatting already, I have somewhere I need to be'' Anthony speaks up, his little robotic flying drone coming over to free him from the webbing. He soon begins to take off, Peter on his tail.
''Stop!'' You called out, using your energy to halt Peter's movement, him groaning in protest. He spin around and quickly shoots webbing to cover your hands together, throwing you back against the railing Anthony was once on.
You gasped and began to struggle to get free, using your powers to try to melt the webbing.
''I'm sorry it's just... I have to'' and with that he took off, swinging after Anthony.
It had taken you a minute but you had finally gotten off all the webbing, levitating yourself in the air once more to follow in the direction of the three guys.
You stopped short once you saw Anthony's drone soon grab onto Peter, leading him out of the building and dropping him to the ground. Your eyes widen in shock.
''We don't have time, we need to hurry'' Anthony speaks up, noticing you hesitate.
''You guys go I'll catch up'' You respond, soon flying out the window yourself.
''Boyfriend on the opposing team, that must suck'' Bucky spoke up towards Anthony before taking off towards the Queen Jet once again.
You flew safely down to the ground to notice he was gone. fuck.
''Everyone over to the Queen jet'' You follow Roger's orders and began to run the rest of the way, meeting up with Wanda as you both ran side by side towards the runway.
You all had stopped short once Vision had drawn a line in the cement.
''Captain Rogers, I know what you believe you are doing is right, but for the collective good... you must surrender now'' With this, everyone else piled in. You frowned once you saw Peter swinging into view, crouching down once he landed before standing back up.
''What do we do Cap?'' Anthony asks.
''We fight'' he says determined, beginning to walk forward. You all followed his lead, you walking slightly off to the side of Cap, moving up next to Bucky.
''They're not stopping'' Peter speaks up slightly anxious.
''Neither are we'' and with this, the Avengers fought each other for real. It was almost a fight to the death, though no one really wanted to hurt each other. You quickly spotted Spider-man and ran over towards him, knocking him to the ground to get him out of the way.
''Why do you keep doing that?'' He speaks up in annoyance, brushing himself off before rising to his feet again. You race over and quickly surround him with energy like you did to Natasha, trapping him. He called out for you as you quickly took off once again, going hand to hand with T'challa.
''Your highness'' You spoke up, delivering a kick to his side. He quickly regain composure and came over to you, using his metal claws to dig into your suit as he lifted you into the air, tossing you over. Just before you hit the ground you used your powers to stop you from making contact, throwing a few energy balls towards T'challa, him successfully dodging every one.
Bucky soon came over once T'challa got too close too swipe at you and landed a blow, knocking him over to the side. You nodded your head in thanks at Bucky, him just giving you a tight lipped smile before walking over to T'challa.
As soon as T'challa was about claw at Bucky's neck, you stopped him, wrapping his arm up in blue energy before throwing him across the sky. Bucky glances over to you.
''You're welcome'' You respond before turning to run the other way over towards Cap.
The battled continued for a few more minuted before you head Anthony's voice through the ear peice.
''No, you both get to the jet, the rest of us aren't getting out of here''
''As much as I hate to admit it, to win this one, some of us might have to lose it'' Clint speaks up. You could feel tears beginning to form in your eyes once more, knowing that what they were saying were right.
''They're right Cap, it's okay'' You could tell he was hesitating, not wanting to leave anyone behind.
''You're 16 years old Y/N... you shouldn't be a wanted criminal yet..'' Cap speaks up through the ear piece.
''I'm starting early'' You respond casually, sending a kick towards Rhodey sending him towards the ground with a grunt, the sound behind heard through the ear piece.
''We need to create a diversion, something big'' Anthony speaks up, Scott instantly replying.
''I've got something kind of big'' You dodge Rhodey's advances and use your powers to stop his flying, sending him straight towards the ground.
''On my signal, run like hell'' Scott instructs. You soon saw Peter swinging through the air, beginning to fight off Rhodey's advances towards you himself. How the hell did he manage to leave?
Vision.
''What's the matter with you kid? I'm on your side!'' Rhodey speaks up after being webbed to the ground. Peter soon lands back down and walks over towards you, your eyebrows furrowing in confusion. Why would he do that?
''Why did you do that?'' You found yourself questioning. Peter stops just in front of you, glancing at you before sighing to himself.
''I don't want to see you get hurt'' Peter says honestly, causing a warm feeling to circle through your chest. You smiled softly at the boy in front of you, feeling your cheeks beginning to warm up slightly.
But you both soon got distracted by Scott growing a hundred feet tall, grabbing onto Rhodey as he had escaped Peter's webbing. Your mouth widened in shock as you heard Cap mutter through the ear piece.
''That must be the signal''
''I've got this I've got this'' You heard Peter mumble to himself as he began to run again, attaching a web on the back of Rhodey to hitch a ride.
''Peter don't!'' You called out, watching helplessly as the began to shoot and tie up big Scott. You began to use your powers to slow down Rhodey's movement, soon throwing him away once Peter was on Scott. You tried aiming a few energy balls towards him but he quickly moved past them, dodging ever one.
You watched Vision then fly through Scott, going through the other side. You quickly began to run again to where you could see Vision beginning to laser a tower.
''Oh no'' You spoke under neath your breath as you glanced towards the retreating figures of Cap and Bucky. He was going to possibly kill them.
You quickly skidded to a stop and bent down a little, allowing your powers to consume you. The air crackled slightly as the blue energy soon emitted from your palms, just catching the tower just before it hit the ground.
You groaned to yourself, feeling the strain on your powers by the weight you were holding up. You watched as Captain and Bucky soon ran underneath.
You then felt a searing pain through your head, momentarily losing focus of your powers causing the tower to fall. You clutched your head as you screamed in pain, feeling like your head was about to explode.
''Please stop!'' You screamed out, soon feeling yourself being picked up and tossed through the air. You couldn't use powers quick enough so you collided with the ground harshly. You coughed as you felt yourself become winded, struggling to catch your breath.
You watch as Scott soon got knocked down, his arm flinging across to knock Peter out of the way.
''Peter!'' You tried to scream but your voice came out hoarsely, seeing your vision becoming spotty. You rolled over and clutched your side, feeling an immense burning take over.
But soon everything faded into darkness
-
You had awoken to light just above you, the smell of metal soon engulfing you. You rolled over, still in pain as you looked down to see your side bandaged up. You raised your other hand to your head, feeling the pounding headache.
You took in your surroundings, metal bars caging you in.
You bit your lip nervously, noticing where you were and that you could see Clint and Wanda in a few cells across from you. You slumped back against the wall, groaning in pain slightly as you back collided softly with the cool concrete.
''You're awake'' Clint speaks up first, Wanda soon glancing your way with a relieved expression.
''What happened? Is everyone okay?'' You asked out worriedly.
''Cap and Buck made it out, though we lost track of them after that'' Clint replies honestly, glancing down at his hands. You did the same, frowning to yourself. At least they made it out, you weren't too sure they had.
''Do you know where we are?'' You found yourself asking, glancing around your cell one again looking for any clues.
''Raft prison''
Great.
-
The next three days dragged by impossible slow, receiving food three times a day and only allowed to be let out twice to use the bathroom. It wasn't a nice feeling being treated like a criminal. You detested the feeling.
You had absentmindedly drawn on the wall, using the crayons they had left for you. You had tried to use your powers but nothing worked, they must have drugged you just like S.H.I.E.L.D use to do.
You were soon taken out of your thoughts by some nearby clapping. Your eyebrows furrowed together as you glanced out the glass door of your cell, the metal bars caging some of your view.
''Here he is ladies and gents! The futurist is here!'' Your eyebrows furrowed together even more.
''This is all! He knows what's best for you.. whether you like it or not'' You could soon hear footprints walking closer and closer to a few cells just before yours.
''Give me a break Barton, I had no idea they'd put you here come on'' Your ears perked up at Stark's voice, he was here?
''Yeah well they had to put us somewhere Tony'' Clint says in disgust.
''Yeah but not some super max, floaty thingy this is a place for-''
''Criminals?'' Clint finishes Tony's sentence.
''Yeah, I'm sure your daughter would be really happy to hear that'' Barton speaks once again, a tear slowly sliding down your cheek as your back rested against a wall of your cell. What took him so long?
You were beyond hurt and angry, you were just numb.
''You broke the law... I didn't make you'' Tony replies, overseeing Clint's last comment.
''I broke the law...'' Clint mutters to himself humorless.
''You broke the law'' Tony responds firmer.
''Alright you're all grown up, you have a wife and kids, why didn't you think about them before maing the decision?''
''Why didn't you?'' Tony obviously knew he was referring to you, he had too. You smiled to yourself hearing that Clint had your back, a few tears still cascading down your face.
''She's never going to forgive you''
''And that will be my problem to fix'' Stark replies sadly, glancing over towards your cell momentarily before back to Clint.
''Like my mom always said you never could trust a stark'' Scott speaks up, noticing Tony make his way past his cell.
''How's Rhodes?'' Anthony asks, his cell being right next to yours so their conversation was very loud and clear.
''We're going to fly him out to Columbia Medical tomorrow'' Tony replies.
''What do you need? They feed you yet?'' He asks, causing both you and Anthony to roll your eyes.
''You're the good cop, now?'' Anthony retorts back sarcastically.
''I'm just the guy who needs to know where Steve went'' Of course that was why he was here. Steve, always about Steve. Wasn't even here for his own adoptive daughter.
''Well you better go get a bad cop...'' Anthony speaks.
''Because you are going to have to go Mark Fuhrman on my ass to get information out of me'' He finishes with a smirk.
''Well...'' Tony starts, a mechanical whirring sound soon being heard through your ears.
''I just knocked their A out of their AV'' Your eyes slightly widen in shock. Why would he do that?
''We got about thirty seconds before they realise it's not their equipment'' He proceeds.
''Look I'll tell you...''
''But you have to go alone, and as a friend'' Anthony finishes, catching you by surprise.
''Easy''. You decided to tune them out after that, not listening into the facts he was telling Tony. You stopped your tears and angrily wiped them away from your face, leaving a red splotchy trail behind.
''...Y/N'' You could hear Tony speak up from just in front of your cell in a defeated tone. You remained hostile, leaving your face emotionless as you stared straight ahead at the wall in front of you.
''What do you want Stark'' You referred to him by his last name, wanting to hit a nerve and clearly you had hearing his voice stagger a little.
''You don't deserve to be in here, you were caught up on the middle of something that-'' You wiped your head around so fast it startled Tony.
''I wasn't stuck'' You replied coldly, letting the venom seep through your words.
''You know...'' You trailed off, feeling your eyes beginning to water once again.
''For the past seven days I've been thinking to myself this was all some kind of huge mistake...'' You spoke up, glancing up towards the ceiling of your cell.
''That maybe I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, fighting for the wrong cause...'' You tried to find your voice again, not wanting to let it break.
''But you know what I learnt Stark?'' You now turned your head to face him, a single tear falling down your cheek and you had made no attempt to get rid of it. Tony's face visibly shrunk at the sight of you so upset.
''Some friendships are stronger than blood''
-
Peter had came to visit with Stark the following weekend, he needed to see you badly. He had been worrying and blaming himself the whole time since he arrived back in Queens. He has been beating himself up that you were in here. He needed to get you out.
''...Y/N?'' The quite yet timid voice almost made you cry there and then. You had hoped and longed to hear his voice these past few weeks. Though you would never admit that aloud.
You glance to your side and let a single tear fall down your check. Peter shakes his head and frowns, walking up to the glass barrier till a beep went off, signalling him to keep his distance. You chuckled humorlessly to yourself.
''What do you want Peter?'' You were almost dying to hear anything from him, he didn't know it but you were clinging onto his every move, every word. You didn't like that you had these past few weeks to evaluate things, it's given you too much time to think. You saw Stark further behind, watching from the distance with a certain look you couldn't quite decipher.
A few tears fell from Peter's emotion clouded eyes, ignoring the beep as he walked up to the window, resting his hand against the glass. You solemnly got up off of the ground and walked over to the glass barrier, looking at his hand before him again.
''I am going to get you out of here I promise'' His voice held so much hope and sincerity you almost cried in happiness. You did truly believe him, but that was how deep you had fallen for him,. And of course he had no idea that you were practically putty in his hands.
For the first time in a while you smiled a genuine smile, resting your hand over the glass as well just as security guards came over to pull Peter away. You let a single tear fall with a wishful smile over you lips, not sparing another glance at your father. You bit your lip sadly and lent your head against the glass.
You saw your hand out of the corner of your eye, smiling to yourself with teary eyes over the moment you two had just shared.
I promise...
I promise...
That was enough you needed to have hope again.

Latest Computer Vision Technology Trends to Watch Out In 2021
Tumblr media
The field of computer vision has advanced rapidly in recent years. Today, computer vision is one of the most promising areas in Artificial Intelligence and computer science. It is estimated to be USD 24.03 billion market by 2027 from USD 13.75 Billion in 2019, with a CAGR of 7.8% from 2020 to 2027. To pit it simply, computer vision trains digital system to process, interpret and understand the visual data (images or videos) in the same way human do. By using digital images and deep learning models, machines can recognize and classify-objects and react to them.
Before the onslaught of the golabal pandemic, the computer vision market was already on a trajectory of immense progress. However, the pandemic has served to accelerate this market growth multifold, with multiple industries adapting digital transformation overnight. The strides which would have been made in five years were achieved just in six months. Market reports have observed that this trend will continue in industrial automation and Artificial Intelligence throughout 2021. The present article aims to chart the top computer vision technology trend that the world will witness in 2021.
Computer Vision Technology Trend 1 : Ensuring Public and Work Place Safety
Covid - 19 has brought many unprecedented changes to the work place, and given such changes, There is a greater need for improved work place safety. The guidelines issued by the US agency, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), necessitate the employers to protect their employees from workplace hazards that can result in illness or injury. The new safety protocols. HSE video anomaly detectors are being employed, effectively for automated monitoring and analysis to detect anomalies, such as failure to wear safety masks, PPE kits, or violation of social distancing norms, to ensure employee and work place safety.
Computer Vision Technology Trend 2 :  Automated Anomaly Detection for Quality Assurance
The manufacturing industry spends precious hours on manual detection of manufacturing defects, and yet, it leave a margin for human error. Solutions such as computer vision technology tools specialize in elevating human inspections and quality control to mitigate potential human errors.
Computer vision technology has been adopted to automated PCB production monitoring and detection by one of the largest electronic manufactures in India. High-quality image data of printed circuit board (PCBs) can check for 20+ anomalies and defects. This market trend of automated anomaly detentions and optimizing visual inspections is also permeating other industry such as food  and beverage, automotive, steel, ect.
Reduce workforce, declining profit margins will lead more industries to adopt computer vision and Artificial Intelligence powered inspections to attain quality standards with better accuracy and lower cost.
Computer Vision Technology Trend 3 : Thermal Imaging Analysis
Thermal imaging analysis is based on using light/heat energy signature to access the surroundings and is already in use in various fields. Military forces often use thermal cameras for night vision. With reduced pricing, the application is being opened up for use in other areas as well.
One such application is augmented not destructive testing Computer Vision. It accesses anomalies and identifies interest areas with a high probability of defects using radiology images taken through NDT techniques.
Automated Vision is based on inspections that increase the visible spectrum and detects the metal surface defects often invisible to the human eye. Recently, thermal imaging data has been utilized to understand hoe the rapid dwindling of the surface cover of the Peruvian Andes Glacier. Consequently, the surface area has been an increase in shrinking by 30%, which has impacted the melt rate. Such adverse development have posed severe threats to the water supply of the people inhabiting the Ancash region of Peru.
Computer Vision Technology Trend 4 : The Rise of Edge-Computing in Real-Time
Edge computing allows the data to be processed and analyzed at the point of collection itself instead of being carried out in the cloud or at the data center. Thus, It is attached to the physical machines and has proven highly beneficial for industries prone to network outages.
Technological prowess in edge computing promptly resolves issues regarding latency and network accessibility, resulting in a better real-time response. It allows the moving of only relevant insights to the cloud for further analysis.
In labor - intensive process, the software examines every steps of the manufacturing process and defects anomalies in real time with the help of Video Analytics. The recorded data provides a holistic view of the entire process. It saves hours of human labor and identifies bottlenecks in real time.
Video Analytics Software on edge is emerging as as visible option for business needs in 2021 with faster computation, real time insights, and high data security.
Computer Vision Technology Trend 5 : Helping Hands Through Sensor Data

T.Y.O.M. Chapter 1: Today is such a good day for pink
Pairing: Miroku x Kagome
WARNING: Old Middle school writing! (I’m very much older now lol)
It was a day like no other in the Feudal Era, really. Countless days of physical and mental exhaustion were not easy on the mix-matched group. Demons never slept or quit so neither could the heroes unfortunately. Feets ached and cramped, thighs burned, and stomachs growled for any kind of substance at this point. The scenery, in all its peacefully teasing glory, didn’t lift their moods like it usually did. Grumbling, Kagome dragged along on her bicycle, her bulging backpack digging into her shoulders in a familiar way. A sigh escaped her lips as she looked at the back of saturated red robes, glaring in hopes that they could rest soon so she could attempt her chemistry homework at least once. She never really had time to think about anything, well, outside of her set priorities.
This past week seemed to just be… automatic. Wake up. Make breakfast. Get interrupted by a corrupted demon. Defeat or persuade said demon. Walk in volatile weather for hours on end. Bicker over lunch. Make instant ramen for lunch. Walk some more. Maybe find a village. Eat dinner. Do homework. Go to bed. Repeat.
Surprisingly, slapping a monk wasn’t on that list but Kagome wasn’t about to jinx it. She shook her head of the thought quickly with another sigh, gaining said monk’s attention. Soft purple eyes glanced over in her direction, a small wanton smile gracing Miroku’s features when his attention fell downward to her swaying ‘skurt’. A soft--and much appreciated--breeze swept along their path, teasingly revealing a flash of something in his line of vision, and he hummed in approval, feeling rejuvenated at such an opportunity. Today is such a good day for pink.
Kagome felt something other than the breeze graze her skin and tightened her grip on the handlebars of her bike. She hoped it wasn’t another demon, there was only so much she could handle today and being on edge made her more tired than anything. Luckily, no demons came out on that fine day. Though Kagome couldn’t help but sigh again, gaining Sango’s attention this time.
“Are you alright, Kagome-san?”
Inuyasha’s ears twitched at the sound and the pace of the group seemed to slacken considerably. She didn’t answer right away, pondering a bit. He let out a ‘keh’ and turned to look at Kagome with piercing gold-colored eyes. He suddenly sniffed the air, nose twitching slightly, before uttering, “There’s a village nearby. About a couple miles east, you can reach there by evening if you hurry but there’s also a demon east-north-ish. I've been itching for a fight, you guys go on ahead.”
Shocked silence settled into the group and Kagome’s eyes bulged from their sockets. No slur? No fuss? Has the Kagome Higurashi finally died? She stuttered out a hesitant ‘ok’, her mood considerably improving with the lightness in her posture. Miroku and Sango were also quite surprised, he must have been just as tired as they were. Not that neither were complaining. With some hesitation, Sango walked up to his side with Kirara and a sleeping Shippo in tow.
“We’ll go too.”
“Sango?”
Kagome couldn’t help but question, the demon slayer just shrugged as an answer, too tired for a verbal answer. It wasn’t much of an explanation but Kagome warmed at Sango’s consideration. She must have not wanted Inuyasha to fight alone--Heck, he even seemed pleased about it.
Splitting up, they exchanged quick goodbyes and headed their separate ways. Kagome’s face held a soft smile as she bounced cheerfully with each step. Then she stopped, hair flipping over and obscuring her vision. The realization that she was alone with Miroku suddenly sunk in and she spit hair out of her gaping mouth, chastising herself for allowing the slip up to happen. Her suddenly sullen mood didn’t last. There wasn’t much he could do, he should be just as tired as the rest of the group… She resigned to her fate with a tired groan and  tightened her grip on her bike.. Skipping further ahead, she hoped to separate them at a suitable distance but already forgot about the concerning length of her skirt. In haste, Miroku quickened his pace and glanced after her with an appreciative hum. He knew she realized their predicament, smiling at the sight of her shaking her head. He allowed the jingle of his staff to stray his intentions, eyes honing in with a practiced ease as the view ahead gave him little peeks of childlike joy with each bounce.
They managed to arrive a couple hours before the last rays of sunlight departed, leaving the heavenly glow of a sunset behind. Although slightly disappointed with the end of flashing pink, Miroku’s mood swelled once more. He always liked this time of day best, where the bustle was shifting from busy to hazy and single ladies came out to play. A purr settled in his throat, hinting the thoughts of his not-so-holy mind, before he took the lead in finding suitable lodging for the night.
The search was relatively quick, Miroku’s old trick of a dark-looming-clouds worked yet again and Kagome wasted no time in unloading the team’s luggage. Miroku’s gaze softened at the display, she must be so tired… and hungry. When was the last time they stopped for food and water?
“Kagome-sama?”
Kagome hummed in response and Miroku took the time gathering the last trickles of energy in his slow strides toward the entrance of their hut. Meeting her eyes, he pointed softly toward the brightly lit village square.
“Would you like to walk with me to get dinner?”
She held her rumbling stomach and nodded. From one eye bag heavy look to another, she added with an accusatory finger wiggling close to his face, “Hands off though, got it?”
Miroku chuckled, leaning his jangling staff on a nearby wall and tucking his hands into the folds of his robe with a flourish. She hummed in approval at the display and matched his content look. They headed out into the evening with Miroku humming with a small smile under Kagome’s watchful glare. The cool air felt nice on their overheated and weary bodies as Miroku guided Kagome through a leisurely path, it weaved through the other huts and buildings as their eyes adjusted to the growing lights. They didn’t have anything to say but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Kagome never really thought about it but Miroku could be respectful too.
In less than a second, Miroku came across several giggles in a nearby hut and slackened his pace, his gloved hands already twitching unconsciously. Kagome felt a shiver run down her spine, her lecher-radar off the charts as her hands itched to cover herself. I shouldn’t have said that. Watching him turn like his stomach wasn’t empty and running on 4 capfuls of water, Kagome felt conflicted. Should I eat and wait for him or drag him with me?
There was another giggle and she bit her lip. She didn’t like where this night was going, stomach twisting uncomfortably, as Miroku inched toward the smell of heavily-perfumed women with a funny smile on his face. Her appetite disappeared as she fumed. Miroku was being disgusting. Again. She didn’t want to get caught up in his shenanigans again and turned on her heel.
“I think I'm going to go back to sleep. I lost my appetite, Miroku-sama.”
That got Miroku’s attention. With a smile still in place, he gave her a worried once over.
“Are you sure, Kagome-sama?”
She nodded, her face and posture telling him all he needed to know. She was uncomfortable and… upset. Why? He felt bad actually. He was the one that invited her for a walk. Another giggle happened to pass between them and she made to leave with a huff. He made a soft exclamation and stepped toward her.
“Please wait.”
“And see you lechering? I’ll pass, Miroku-sama”, she strained her voice on ‘sama’ before slowly turning back to Miroku. His purple eyes startled her, the sunset lighting made them more striking than usual, which made her avert her eyes again.
“Well, I was going to teach you about palm-reading actually. It’s a useful skill to have--”
“And not just a tactic to pick up women?” Miroku caught her eyes again, catching her usual sparkle once more, and chuckled softly.
“Men too, if you prefer!”
“I think I'm good, Miroku-sama. I just find it gross when you act all pervy...”
She emphasized her point with a worm-envy wiggle of her fingers close to her grossed out, scrunched face and narrowed eyes, and he matched with a cheeky grin of his own and a shrug of his shoulder.
“I suppose you would, but I can’t help the earthly pleasure of it.”
Kagome laughed, a bit too bitterly to her surprise.
“I guess I could stay around, to see you fail.”
Miroku seemed to catch the tone as well, mouth opening to inquire before an exceptionally stunning woman stepped out the door of the hut on their right.
Her features were delicate.
Kagome’s own suddenly felt childish and rough.
She had an endearing smile seemingly crafted just for her face.
Kagome flicked a practiced tongue behind her cross-bitten yet normally aligned teeth.
Her luscious locks, from years of gentle care and organic products, and matching expensive yet modest silks framed her figure.
Kagome’s hair felt ratty and tangled from the weeks of stress, fighting, and drugstore travel sized products and her clothes felt too cheap, too manufactured and exposed, giving her a haggard appearance in comparison.
It made her shrink but also compelled her to huff with a single stomp of her beaten loafer on the dirt path. Many women fanned at the daunting woman’s side, obviously just as charmed by her appearance and charisma, as they covered their faces with a giggle and a sleeve over their mouths. Her stomach sank at the sounds. Kagome couldn’t tell if it was because Miroku’s pretty eyes locked onto the woman the moment she stepped out or because she suddenly became all the more insecure about herself. Wait, pretty eyes? Where did that come from?
Kagome’s eyes trained on the agonizingly slow pace the woman took towards them. It was intentional, powerful, and ensnaring. That woman knew what she was doing. She had at least 3 years of experience and time over the young girl. Lips glued shut, Kagome stayed stuck beside Miroku, the space between them growing at the woman’s threatening aura. There was silence, as if to lay ownership to the air surrounding them, before the woman opened her mouth.
“I heard there was a notorious monk that arrived here.”
It was a sweet sound. Miroku chuckled, shamelessly rubbing the back of his head with his gloved hand. The beads tapped together against the movement and it brought her back to reality. As if her trivial feelings were thrown into an invisible abyss, his all-too-familiar saint-like and deceivingly humble smile reminding Kagome of his curse and it quelled the raging fire inside her. One that crushed his livelihood with each passing second and forced him on his knees with life-saving options slipping through his fingers. He had all the time to explore his options and potentially pass on his will, and the will of his predecessors before him, to an heir to end his family’s suffering when he was working alone but chose to be here, with her and Inuyasha and the others. Rather thinking it foolish, she couldn’t help but feel heavy with the maturity and responsibility of his decision. She felt saddened at the depressing thoughts, guilt clutching at her heart. I shouldn’t feel like this. I need to apologize. She reached out to get his attention but he opened his mouth.
“I am but a monk, miss.”
It feigned humility, sickly sweet yet easy to swallow, and she tried to wet her suddenly dry throat, once again grounded by him and his stature. The fire was back. Kagome crossed her arms, losing all previous concerns, and snorted very unladylike. The woman paid no mind.
“A humble monk? How… fetching.”
Kagome shriveled a bit on the inside as an unnaturally charming smile fixed itself on Miroku’s face. It suits him... What the hell am I--- Furrowing her eyebrows, Kagome watched the lady shamelessly flirt with the monk. Her giggles made Kagome’s insides twist as Miroku traced lines on the woman's dainty hand. Making sure his voice stuck to every single female in the vicinity, he lowered his volume with a smirk, watching as they all stepped closer to hear him.
Hardly resisting herself, Kagome fell under his spell, intrigued by how soothing his voice actually was. Though she caught herself when her foot inched closer than intended and hung back, watching as Miroku chuckled again, he got caught teasing the crowd of thirsty females, who took turns pulling on his arm in mock exasperation. Kagome could have left at any moment if she wanted, but she felt like she had to stay. She might actually learn something… As if.
“Wow, would you look at that? You have such lovely lines, miss. I predict a wonderful husband and many sons and daughters in your near future!”
It was the performance of the main act, the leading lady and the lowly but handsome clergyman set up for a forbidden but fated romance. Kagome snorted again at the woman swooning elegantly, the latter causing her fellow gal pals to explode in giggles and chatter. They crowded the all-too-gleeful monk and pushed against each other, begging to have their palms read. It was actually impressive how fast he got them all wrapped around his finger. Kagome furrowed her brows deeper at the display, it seemed wrong to play with people's emotions, no matter how eager the person was. Especially in Miroku’s case, doesn’t he realize how serious this is for him…? As if Miroku read her mind, he attempted to tease the situation into his favor, her furrowed brows weren’t very Kagome-like. The outcomes were probably too predictable--a simple slap on the cheek and the following fussing over from adoring women--but he was hoping that she might play along a bit, or make it interesting.
“It's hard to learn about palm reading if you can't hear me. Kagome-sama.”
That seemed to get every female’s attention. The force of their scrutinizing glares caused her to freeze, a retort stuck in her throat as she caught a mischievous glint in Miroku’s eyes and an amused smile on his lips. She pursed her lips and cocked her hip angrily at being called out. If that’s how he wanted to play this game, she could very much reject his offer. Their respective smiles, one more forced and pissed than anything, clashed and she inhaled sharply. There it was again, that lonely numbness and resignation mixed with almost perfect, almost, liveliness. It stopped her tongue but she knew she had to answer at some point, and fast.
There was the softest, smug titter from Miroku’s right and Kagome felt the hair on her neck ruffle like a cautious newborn kitten. Locking eyes with the most mesmerizing--No, stop it--hazel eyes, Kagome felt her nostrils flare at a microscopic level, warning sirens firing in her head. Miroku hadn’t caught onto their instant clash of daggers but Kagome was all in, cards drawn, pawns moved, and dice already shaking in her hand. There were probably a lot of options she could go about but she only formed two in her head, her cursed single-mindedness directing her on auto-pilot. Each riled her up in different ways. Turn away and face the shame of running away and thirsty-female brutality of gossiping or play along and put all these girls and a perverted monk in their place.
Her pride wasn't having any of it apparently as she confidently took a couple steps forward. You wanted a game, monk? I’ll show you a checkmate. The giggling crowd turned quiet, parting slightly at the fiery spark in her scarily expressive eyes. Her own pace, not so delicate or practiced, had a powerful quality of it’s own, stealing back a territory more familiar to her in terms of a playing field. They were interested to see how this will play out, knowing full well how their leader's tongue was sharper than any knife. The elegant woman's smile widened, and--Was that a hint of lust? For a faulty, stupidly brooding in a mysterious but shojo kinda way prize? Oh hell no.
Leaning closer to a baffled, yet amused Miroku, Kagome smiled right back at her with just as much, if not more, aggression. The woman dropped her hands from Miroku’s, as if daring Kagome to take the bait. She did, allowing Miroku to gently grab her hand and face the palm upward.
“What a lovely hand you have, Kagome-sama! The lines are quite contrasting in meaning, hmm... Which seems to be the most interesting to you? I believe I could tell you something you do not know about yourself this way. I must warn you, it’s quite intimate.”
There was a subtle insinuation that made many suck in their breaths with anticipation. In the world of the female gender, this was the rope that either made you a woman or a girl. The man may think he holds the upper hand but it’s a woman’s game, for women against women. Whoever hit first set the playing field. Clever girl.
With a contemplative narrowing of her eyes, she acknowledged her senior’s trap, who was on the side covering her own smile. It was elaborate but nothing Kagome couldn’t handle. She defeated demons of this degree and worse before, mind games designed for both the simple minded and the nuances of the female-dominated field in both the Feudal Era and her own world. This was a piece of cake. Sorry, but you’re 500 years too early to handle the heartlessness of highschool girls and single women in their prime at mixers with only one attractive males---excluding Miroku, of course.
The woman just waited for Kagome’s move with a graceful lift of a brow, the silence tense as the females all continued to hold their breaths. As if bored, Kagome shrugged at Miroku’s comment, glancing down at their hands before looking up at him from underneath her lashes. Miroku shifted his gaze from her hand to her blazing eyes, curious about what she will do. Her eyelashes fluttered. It was unusual, yet teasing and... a bit flirty? What are you planning, Kagome?
His gaze suddenly lowered to her lips in peaked interest, they looked quite cute when parted. There were small marks on the bottom lip too. She probably bit down on them earlier.
“I… don't think I'm interested in those kinds of lines, Miroku-sama.”
That got everyone's attention. Miroku blinked, confused, before he pointed to another crease in her palm and opened his mouth to speak.
“Well---”
Kagome cut him off, lifting light fingers to linger over his ear lobe. Gathering her wits, bursting pride, and years of sappy romance novel knowledge, she leaned close, delicately balancing between the stagnant but warm air between them and her toes.
“I would say this jawline is very intriguing though.” She swiped her fingers along the sharp line of his jaw, humming in appreciation at the feeling of soft skin. As if feeling, more than seeing, all those eyes on her, she pulled her hand to her lips, sucking the tip of her finger and feigning pain. “Ouch.”
There was an echo of bewildered comments, but the leading woman felt the threat of the playing field shifting and Miroku glanced around at the subtle change in mood.
“It’s quite… sharp, and so very strong,” She carefully eunusciated her words, letting it drag before continuing, “Strong enough to capture quite the lovely maiden and…”
They all hung to her next words, begging to understand and poke holes at, but the leading lady prompted her on, “And…?”
Leaning close as to fan her scent in a rather animalistic way, she focused on the bobbing of his Adam’s apple, analyzing his reaction. He swallowed with a subtle stutter. Thank you, holy Alpha’s Only Affair. Collecting herself, she feigned a sigh, closed in on herself and played with a lock of her hair.
“So sorry, I just started training privately with Miroku-sama. But I believe it went along the lines of capturing quite the lovely maiden and having her beg for more---”
Miroku choked and the group exploded in a thrilled shock.
“..children, for more children.”
Giggles cut through the chatter and Miroku stared at her in disbelief. Who is this and what did they do with Kagome? She was urged on by his lack of comeback, it never happened before. Kagome couldn’t resist continuing, she was in too deep. Taking on a sweet, soft whine, she pouted softly and tilted her head to the side.
“Was I wrong? You were so thorough and diligent with your teachings, you even pounded it so hard into me. I can’t believe how forgetful I was but… I always loved the way you teach, Miroku-sama.”
Each word made the crowd whoop louder, as the beautiful woman in the middle clenched her teeth in scathing silence. Locking eyes with the suddenly devious woman, Miroku saw Kagome crack through her pout with a trembling smile and felt a sense of pleasure at the change strangely enough, warmth digging under his robes at the laughter in her eyes. The look vanished as it came, leaving an almost identical Miroku-esque smile on her face.
“It is quite a sharp line and I mean what I saw in them but…”
Another ace on top of your growing bid? This is risky, Kagome-sama.
“I’m having a hard time figuring out your state of vitality and fortune, your life line is covered. I hope I’m not prying…?”
At her knowing gaze, he shook his head with a smile and let his beaded hand fall, their little secret. With the same, equally fake soft whine, she smiled with soft resignation, “It’s of no consequence.”
The woman, seizing her chance, hugged his beaded arm gently, letting her soft mounds brush in an intentionally innocent manner, as if to say checkmate. Ignoring her settled rival, Kagome hooked her thumb in the folds of his robe and ran her hand up along the fabric, lightly caressing his chest before urging him closer with a pull on the knot connecting the fabric. The crowd, loud with gossip and excitement, quelled at the display and watched on.
“As I said before”, Kagome took her time to fake assessing his skin, warmth spreading from the trail of her fingertips against fabric yet her eyes did not meet his, “You have quite sharp lines.”
Miroku felt breathless. He couldn’t help the slightest stumble at her eyes, hooded yet inciting challenge. He felt, rather than saw her run her nail along his Adam's apple and collarbone.
“Is it the same under the robes? Because, if I can’t read your palm...”
Kagome shifted her eyes to the towering female on Miroku’s right before returning back to Miroku’s own, tone screaming ‘royal flush’ to her trivial checker’s match as she laid her hand out.
”...I’d like to read those lines, if you will.”
Gasps of disbelief were her only response, slowly shifting to deafening cheers and gasps. It was an irrefutable and crushing defeat, one to humble the mighty and strengthen the underdog. Biting her lip in silent pride, she quirked a small brow and waited for his move. Kagome went above any rule set for the game he set up, leading her opponents by the nose and molding the playing field to her advantage. He knew that, but where did she learn that? Miroku was oddly silent, eyes widening softly as he watched her. Seconds passed and nothing happened, the clamor turning chaotic as half attempted to appease the leading woman’s bruised ego and the other gushed over her boldness.
“Well…?”
Miroku snapped out of his reverie and tried to think of something, anything. He was cornered. If I… I could… What about… It won’t work, she got me. With a soft sigh, he conceded with a rather wolfish smirk and brought his hand up to surrender. His unwavering surrender took her out of autopilot and her pride feasted deliciously at the monk’s uncommon defeat. Kagome felt her heart beating wildly, like it was built up and stuck in a lag. The weight of her words crashed on her, echoing in her rather soft and girly self-conscious, and a blush crept up her neck, but she wasn't done yet. Looking back at the beautifully stunned woman and turning her nose up slightly, Kagome winked cheekily. No rebuttal. Good.
Kagome’s pride in repercussion deflated at her shameless flirting but it wasn’t enough to drown out her victory. She couldn’t keep the triumphant smile nor the raging blush from appearing and quickly turned on her heels. She could imagine the growing smirk on his face at her slip up but refused to give him that image and quickly spat out, “I’ll meet you out front, Miroku-sama. Don’t play around too long, I’m hungry now.”
Oh gods, that sounded wrong. Curse you, Alpha’s Only Affair! Hand slapping over her mouth, Kagome cringed but couldn't change what she said. Quickening her pace, she noticed the outrageously excited chatter behind her and silently hoped to the gods that Karma wouldn't come back to bite her on the butt. She, however, didn't notice a different shift in Miroku’s expression.
His eyes flickered to her retreating figure, hand stroking along the tingle of her fluttering touch on his jawline and eyes on the rhythm of her long legs. Well, that was new, better than a slap to the cheek. Definitely better… Ah, today is such a good day for pink.
