you keep posting about columbo. do i need to watch it would u recommend?

first of all sorry for answering more than a week later... i had a feeling if i just keep on columboposting all alone eventually someone will be like what's going on.. my brain's been like THE KLUMBO!! every day most days for a while now so bear with me for a moment

my answer to "do you recommend x" is always that i can tell you about it, say what i like about it and what's possibly not to like so you can better evaluate whether it's something you would enjoy, yeah? 😳 like in the end it's either for you or it isn't and only you can find out. you know what i mean

um so columbo, the episodes are feature-length self-contained murder mysteries, if you wanted to you could start anywhere. and they aren't exactly mysteries because the concept is that you watch the murder happen and then the clues that lead to the arrest are uncovered gradually and the lieutenant and the killer dance around each other until the latter incriminates themself. usually because they underestimated columbo because he's a shabby little guy and appears to be sort of a bumbling idiot but is actually incredibly perceptive and sharp-witted, and he knows how the (usually rich) self-important murderers see him and uses that against them, as well as his compassion and intuition. that's pretty much it, it's a reverse whodunnit

i think (and it may be obvious) that the appeal of the show other than the crime/mystery is columbo, if you like him that could possibly be the thing that makes you continue watching. so i'll tell you that he doesn't carry a gun, can't stand the sight of blood, or high places, loves his wife. and his dog. simple guy, shrewd though. same rumpled coat and shitty little peugeot convertible all the time. he's very socratic in his methods, non-violent, and i think that's what really attracted me to this show. i enjoy the masculinity without the usual baggage, without the arrogance and the domineering and the posturing, if that makes sense lol.. plus i think peter falk's performance is wonderfully human, stephen fry said this once in an interview if i remember correctly: there's a certain warmth to it. columbo's a humble, virtuous character, yeah he's disheveled, a little all over the place but he understands people and is endlessly curious and dedicated and that's how he wins. and i like that and i think he's a bit of an unusual character because we're far from the macho tough guy cops who intimidate and coerce and threaten And from the trope of the egotistical superhuman genius detective.. he's a little guy c'maahn he's just a little guyy (it's not about him though viewers aren't even supposed to know his first name and it's hard to tell when he's bluffing and his private life is never the focus. so, a mysterious little guy)

TLDR: yes i recommend it if you like mysteries and would enjoy a crime drama with moments of silliness or would appreciate the unconventional masculinity (for his time definitely) i see in this character, and no i don't recommend it if you'd rather watch things that are short and snappy or if you strongly prefer an overarching plot or if you hate the look and feel of the 70s or if you don't like peter falk's whole deal and especially not if your pet peeve is talking in circles. oh and there are some moments and aspects of episodes that didn't age well but they're very few and far between imo. just wanted to mention that, i know nothing is perfect ofc<3

#i had this whole thing where i rambled about which episodes are probably best to start with but i'm just gonna say‚ start with murder by #the book (first episode but not the pilot) or double exposure or suitable for framing. opinions vary on many episodes but i think these are #generally loved. also negative reaction has a killer that didn't interest me but it's great for getting to know columbo #but there are many articles and posts with opinions about which episodes are the best and which are good to start with #articles about why people watch/love columbo too. like if you didn't trust me and wanted different sources hdshvy #ask #columbo

Luke Kirby seeks characters with ‘a heartbeat,’ whether it’s Lenny Bruce on ‘Mrs. Maisel’ or an agoraphobic sleuth in ‘Panhandle’ [x]

Like many of us, actor Luke Kirby spent much of the pandemic lockdown period watching television. Unlike the rest of us, his viewing provided some inspiration for his next TV role. “The two shows that I watched the most were ‘Columbo’ and ‘Golden Girls,’” the Hamilton-born actor said in a Zoom interview, referring to the 1970s drama starring Peter Falk as a homicide detective and the beloved 1980s comedy about four older women living together in Miami. “And I felt like playing somewhat of a gumshoe inside of Florida, it was sort of like those two worlds could merge in some way. And that would be really fun.” There is definitely fun to be had in “Panhandle,” a dramedy in which Kirby stars as eccentric amateur detective Bell Prescott. Bell has the deduction skills of a Sherlock Holmes — if Sherlock wore seersucker suits, drank a lot, had a pet alligator, was agoraphobic, set up a crime lab in a barn and talked to his dead wife. Bell crosses paths with sarcastic traffic cop Cammie Lorde (Tiana Okoye) — who’s in fact the only cop left in Boggsville, Fla., after budget cuts — when a body turns up on the estate he shares with his widowed mother (former “Cinderella” Lesley Ann Warren). Bell and Cammie make a bargain: he’ll help her flex her detective muscles on other unsolved crimes and she’ll help him try to find his wife’s killer. The odd couple partnership makes for a delightful TV pairing. Kirby said he was smitten with the character of Bell when he first read the script. “He seemed a little different from things I’m more accustomed to (and) I appreciate the profane, I appreciate silliness. But I also felt, within the story, there was a true beating heart that was pumping real human blood, especially with the community of characters.” Indeed, Bell and Cammie can be quite funny, as can the people around them, but Bell’s mental illness is treated as a serious issue. [...] This is Kirby’s first lead role in a series since the Canadian drama “Crash & Burn” (2009-10), in which he played an insurance investigator. His profile reached new heights after he won an Emmy Award in 2019 for portraying comedian Lenny Bruce in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” But he’s had plenty of other notable roles, including the gay son of Italian immigrants in movie “Mambo Italiano”; a Hollywood star turned thespian in cult TV comedy “Slings and Arrows”; the other man in Sarah Polley’s film “Take This Waltz”; the lawyer for a wrongfully convicted ex-con in acclaimed drama series “Rectify”; and a hot, rich dad in the “Gossip Girl” reboot. There’s a difference, Kirby acknowledged, in playing a fictional character like Bell and a real person like Lenny, “who was obviously not a contemporary but historically close enough. There’s a lot of recordings and a fair amount of footage that really can inform a sort of specificity of sound and physicality.” But with any character Kirby plays, “I kind of feel I have to — protect sounds too precious because there’s nobody out there trying to, you know, defame my character — but you just sort of hold it tenderly, I guess.” Asked if he feels successful, Kirby said it’s a moving target. “It’s a mercurial business. Even the kind of barometric pressure of the self that you have to contend with playing different things, you’re tracking all of these different lives … with success, it’s probably best to try to assess it as a day-to-day thing. “I like to work,” he said. “And it’s important to work for a multitude of reasons, some very practical, some a little more fanciful, some a little more dreamy … to me, it’s always been ‘Can I get a heartbeat here and can I maintain a heartbeat with a character and with a story?’ “The work itself, the kind of dreamy aspect hasn’t changed, the kind of exploring of imaginary universes: it still just feels like a very lucky thing to get to do.”

She loves to cook and bake! She often spend some times with Haley at her bakery, to bake stuff for her friends! And she's really into fashion too, so she likes to go shopping, trying new makeup and all 💅

She's pretty shy went it come to flirting ahah. She'd be flustered and appreciate the attention but then gently turning him down because her sight is set on someone else 👀

At first, not really. But she finally accepted because she wanted to help people! She's very social and having a job in Wayhaven where she can be here for them and make a difference is something she enjoys

Well, it's a big mix between cosy, bright and vintage ahah. She likes antique furnitures, but with modern touch. She spend a lot of time to decorate her home and like to change it now and then. I made her appartment a whiiiiiile ago (x) with the sims 3 to give an idea!

I haven’t been real inspired to draw N. Mostly because I never played their route in book 3 😬

I don’t know that I could do them justice. I’m not opposed to it but I’ve not thought of how I’d draw em (and it would probably be Nat not Nate). [Also, there are other reasons I’m hesitant to draw N.]

Anyways, thanks for wanting to see them in my style. Maybe some day.

How do you think the UBs would react if they find out Falk is interest in the detective?

OHOHOHOHOHO, this is most interesting.

i'm assuming you are specifically talking about romance routes, a little after the events of Book 2.

anyway, a lot rides on how the detective interacts with Falk, tbh. and because i can be a li’l shit, i’m also making the assumption that the detective continues to be friendly with Falk because they’re either intrigued by him or they just want to maintain a cordial relationship with the Maa-alused.

[reactions under the cut!]

N is probably the most secure about their relationship with the detective, so they're also the least jealous – compared to the other ROs – especially once they’re officially together. this is not to say that they’re not bothered at all. they understand why the detective maintains the kind of equation with Falk but the idea certainly makes them...uncomfortable, as they would label it. it’s most certainly got to do with Falk. that he is a powerful supernatural being is a lingering concern for them. so, they make it a point to accompany the detective should they have to meet Falk – more so in order to provide protection than anything else.

F may not do as well with that knowledge as N does; certainly not as soon as they've come to know. F has most likely had enough heartbreaks to last a lifetime. their relationship with the detective is probably the first serious relationship that they've had in a very long time, so it's likely they'd get a little insecure and want to hold on more tightly. so, they may show their affection more than usual – hugging the detective longer and tighter, offering words of affirmation more insistently, kissing the detective more often – which does not go unnoticed by the detective, who may offer them reassurance. once they've been reassured enough, i imagine they'll be a lot more secure – even teasing the detective about Falk's little crush on them once a while, making sure to add, "too bad, you've chosen me, though" with their characteristic grin at the end.

M is completely new to whichever feeling it is that they are experiencing (of course, it’s NOT jealousy) so they don't know how to deal with this. but they would instinctively let out a loud scoff ("as one would," they tell themself). surely the detective knows they're into them, right? that it isn't casual– no wait, isn't it? their mind is running a million miles an hour and they're kind of struggling. this is very unlike them. why does the idea of the detective being friendly with Falk – even after they know he's interested in them – make them so unbelievably uneasy? all this mental work while "casually" seeking the detective's company a lot more than usual - what is that place that the detective said they wanted to take them? that activity they said they must try? all that and a lot of lingering around, casual touches. until the detective notices and reassures them. the way they like it.

A definitely stiffens for a fleeting moment. but they can’t be jealous. it’s not like the detective is answerable to them on a personal basis. try as they might, though, they just cannot quell this general feeling of unease, so they’re likely to try to withdraw from the situation – until they’ve worked out (re: suppressed) their emotions sufficiently enough. so, A standing by a window brooding gazing out is not a rare sight. this does not go unnoticed, though, with F’s perceptiveness and gentle teasing that may further cause the detective to clarify their intention behind the friendliness (they didn’t need to). also, like N, they are also a little concerned about Falk being a powerful supernatural being. so, like N again, they would also insist on joining the detective should they ever need to interact with Falk, standing a little closer than usual. “to protect them,” they insist.

I didn’t have to watch him to know his eyes are trailing over me, and yet I do, the intensity of his stare causing my heart to sputter in my chest. I don’t hesitate to drink in the sight of him—Falk lounging on a chair not far from me, my face heating when his legs spread further under my scrutiny. Rational be damned, he was beautiful.

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding and step up to him. His lips quirk into one hell of a smug, inviting grin. He keeps his eyes trained on me as I approach and my mind reminds me that Ava is waiting outside. When I don’t otherwise acknowledge it, the thought fades. I pause just in front of him and Falk shifts to sit upright, the quiet still holding us.

“May I?”

Why them?: on a meta level: oh no he’s hot

but alma’s reasoning is that he’s very upfront about what he wants in the beginning and she’s never been pursued in such a way. It’s a bit of a rush and an ego boost for her at first. but mason’s loyalty very quickly becomes the steadiness alma’s been missing for most of her life and she latches on to that. she’s not had someone so dependable around in… well, ever. and her physical attraction becomes emotional VERY quickly.

Bold, shy, or mixed?: shy until they sleep together, then a mix of bold and genuine afterward.

What were their first impressions of each other?:

alma on mason: thought he was super attractive but that was quickly pushed aside by “holy shit, this guy’s an ass.” she thinks he’s an uncooperative jerk that only cares about himself for quite a while, honestly. she asks him along for things she wants to do alone precisely because she thinks he’ll be the most likely to just stay out of her way. she’s surprised by his attitudes and opinions, and her incorrect assumptions about them, during those times.

mason on alma: would never, ever, ever admit that his first thought upon meeting Alma was simply “cute.” he quickly found parts of her to assess individually. those first few days were mostly spent appraising her physical attributes and watching her back when she needed it. mason did find her funny right away, but he wasn’t willing to trust someone new, regardless of that person being their handler’s daughter or not.

What do they find attractive about each other, mentally or physically?:

alma on mason: his eyes, freckles, and every single version of his smile. his decisiveness, differentially, and willingness to stab as a warning.

mason on alma: her hair tbh, there’s just… a lot of it. her hips, her eyelashes. He also likes her adaptability, sense of humor, and the warmth she gives with no expectation of reciprocation.

What do they do to spend time together?: lots of stargazing, lots of watching tv very quietly and making fun of the storylines they don’t understand until they get bored and make out instead, walking around the quieter parts of wayhaven or taking late-night drives.

What is their favorite memory together?: i like to think mason finds the carnival photo of them after the place has been sacked and gives it to alma sometime later. both the taking of the photo and the giving of it are very fond memories for both of them.

What are their love languages?: touch, quality time.

How do they handle being apart from one another?: badly. mason absolutely hates it after a time. if alma’s out of town, he’s in her apartment with the excuse of feeding her cat, but it’s 100% just to sleep in her bed and be around all the things that make her, her. alma does a little better. she’s used to having folks sort of come and go and come again, but she gets almost hyper-insecure?? it’s nothing she’d admit openly, but she’s second-guessing herself in totally unrelated aspects of her life until they’re reunited.

Do they argue? How do they handle arguments and disagreements? How do they make up?: they don’t necessarily argue, but they disagree with the intent to problem solve. alma is pretty flexible and as long as she can understand why someone might feel the way they feel, she’s willing to hear them out or go along with their plan. if an argument does get out of hand, they need space from it for a while. they each have places to retreat for those times, and they wait for the “hey” text to come through to know it’s time to talk about it.

What does their future look like?: alma becomes a vampire two years into their relationship. they move into a quiet, old house on the edge of town until the whole team moves elsewhere. mason has to get used to having a cat because october has several years left in him. they don’t get married, but they’re inseparable.

Anything else you’d like to share: in the time before alma turns, mason learns to perfect making grilled cheese because it’s what alma craves when she’s not feeling well. He makes the grilled cheese then he immediately showers to get the smell off him but he makes it regardless.

BEST FRIEND RELATIONSHIP

Best friend: depending on the playthrough it swaps between felix and nate, but felix feels more in character

Why them?: alma loves felix’s sense of adventure and nosiness. Most of all she loves that he won’t judge her for pulling the same shit every now and then.

What were their first impressions of each other?: alma was super thrown off by that hand kiss. “who the fuck is this mischief-maker?” while nate was very kind and warm, felix (surprisingly) was the UB teammate that really humanized the rest of the team for alma. he’s fun and genuine and wants everyone else to be happy together. felix was incredibly interested to learn more about alma, as a human, as his boss’s daughter, and then as a friend when she readily accepted the supernatural and, by extension, him as a vampire. The fact that she’s easily flustered or surprised really works in his favor because he lives for being the most shocking person in the room.

What do they do to spend time together?: they share music, they dance, and they text A LOT. lots of memes, lots of “what does [x] mean?” “oh nice” “[proceeds to use the thing they just learned incorrectly]”. they also compare and share hair products.

Anything else you’d like to share: they each have a tamagotchi named after the other (baby felix and baby alma) and they compete to see who can keep theirs alive the longest. everyone loses.

OTHER RELATIONSHIPS (Feel free to go in-depth!)

Relationship with Rebecca: oof okay. alma seeks rebecca’s approval and depends on her for a sense of safety and “stability.” in some ways, she wants to be exactly like her mom: strong, independent, unbothered, worldly. but a lot of that shatters the longer alma works professionally with rebecca and with the revelations surrounding rook. alma sees how much rebecca uses her as a crutch, projects her perceived failures onto alma’s life, and over-shelters her.

Relationship with Rook: alma doesn’t remember him and tries not to think of him often or fondly or at all BUT she has so many of his things. his flannels, his detective badge, his ancient comic book collection (which is the only reason she has her own). she has his eyes and his impulsive streak, his care for people of all varieties. she IS rook’s daughter and she ignores that fact so it doesn’t hurt her.

Relationship with Bobby: they used to be very close, slightly flirty friends but there’s no way in hell alma can trust him now. (i originally had bobby as alma’s ex but it was all getting a little too Bella Swan for me. like bobby, douglas, the werewolves, falk, and mason like????? it was a bit much so bobby’s just an old ex-friend)

Relationship with Verda: alma fucking loves verda. that’s her mentor, that’s her dad friend. she feels a sense of Pride and Accomplishment when she can make verda laugh or impress him in the lab, or both. alma’s fond of spending evenings over his place with eric and the kids, making dinner, or just hanging out.

Relationship with Tina: tina was alma’s first friend as a kid. they lost touch in high school because tina was bubbly and cute and popular, while alma was… not. but the summer before they left for college they ran into each other at a house party and since that reconnection, they’ve been thick as thieves. it was like nothing had changed. tina is a light in alma’s life, and alma lets tina lean into the stranger parts of herself without judgment.

Relationship with the Mayor: thinks he’s a creep and a bad parent.

Relationship with Capt. Sung: appreciates how he prioritizes the town and its people, but thinks he could loosen up a bit.

Relationship with Haley: haley is a couple of years older than alma but they’ve known each other forever. alma admires haley’s work ethic and cheery attitude.

Relationship with Elidor: oh man, alma is absolutely stunned by elidor. he’s beautiful, kind, and knowledgeable. in those early days, elidor is responsible for quite a bit of her supernatural education. alma grills him while he nurses her back to health. her curiosity is refreshing to him.

Relationship with Tapeesa/Vieno: alma thinks vieno is cute and funny, says hi when she sees them around, but they’re not best friends or anything. she can’t shake the thought that they’re basically a fae version of danny devito.

Relationship with Unit Alpha: absolutely smitten with lesedi. she’s never seen a more beautiful woman. tamiko ends up being a pretty good friend. the twins are on her social periphery but alma’s not close with them.

Relationship with the Maa-alused: alma sincerely wants to help them adjust to life in this world and takes that goal very seriously. at the same time she really really wishes falk hadn’t developed this weird attachment to her.

Do they have any other important relationships, past or present? (Relatives, friends, etc.?): YES. i’ve thrown another oc in wayhaven for the express purpose of being The Detective. His name is javi. alma met him in college and they were fast friends. alma convinced him to try out wayhaven after graduation. They lived together for a while and now they, along with tina, can often be seen in the corner booth of chen’s pub.

she was also very close with her maternal grandmother before she died. she was raised by her while rebecca was absent, but i need to develop this more.

her cat, october, whom she’s had for five years. he’s a sweet, mostly black tortie that can hardly meow. alma adopted him as an adult when she got her own place.

PERSONAL BIO

Describe their personality: alma is so open and ready to accept new possibilities. she’s the sort of person that embraces what scares her, finds beauty in it, and loves it intensely. she’s sharp and resourceful. i wouldn’t exactly describe her as hard-working, but she’s knowledgeable about her field and tries to be helpful when she has a goal in mind.

she’s quite tactile. touchy with other people. likes to use her hands for work or hobbies. she doesn’t really mind being alone for long stretches of time but would prefer not to be. she wants others to want to be around her.

she’s also terrible at being honest about her trauma. everything is fine, she’s fine, she doesn’t need to talk about this :) :) :) she will handle the breakdown when it happens and not one second before. also, with quick wit comes uncontrollable sarcasm and it does not always hit well.

Strengths: the only person in unit bravo that knows how to use google

Where in the world is their Wayhaven?: super torn here because wayhaven feels inland to me, but i think i’ve finally settled on the north carolina coast but not like the outer banks area. If not there, then maybe virginia, closer to the chesapeake bay.

What is their personal history?: alma is born to rook and rebecca in wayhaven. spends her childhood being raised mostly by her grandmother, idolizes rebecca. academic success comes easily for her; a heavy interest in science leads to a scholarship at a university just far away enough to feel like she’s Leaving The Nest. alma dates a bit in college but she’s the type to end up becoming friends with everyone she sleeps with and romance is difficult for her to cultivate. when she does date, the relationships are short-lived. she returns to wayhaven after school and puts her degree to work in wayhaven’s police department. she wishes she’d applied for a position in the city but craves the comfort (and tbh, the low stakes) of home.

If they weren’t a detective, what would their dream job be?: she’s a forensic analyst and honestly?? it’s a pretty dreamy job for her. she loves being a scientist, loves helping people, and isn’t easily grossed out.

Anything else you’d like to share: has tried to stay overnight in an ikea. did not succeed.
