I won't lie I think "I had a crush on you for superficial reasons when we first met but then that went away when I spent time with you and we became best friends built on a foundation of genuine respect and care and THEN I fell in love with you properly" is an underrated trope and so much can be done with it

a headcanon if I may:

N Sewell is the embodiment of that post about oversharing and being emotionally open in order to avoid being actually vulnerable. They aren't mysterious, they don't lie, but they don't tell you everything because they cannot handle laying themselves completely raw and bare in front of someone. A du Mortain knows them of course, maybe is the only person who knows them, but N has trouble letting others know them. Not even M and F.

They are exceptionally good at giving their friends the impression that there's nothing wrong and that they're coping in healthy ways but they are not and if you get too close you can see them tearing at the seams. And then they step away, cover the vulnerability up with an open smile and ask you about your day. Because they want to make sure before anything else that you are okay, that you don't need anything.

Whatever happened in their past, they won't work through it because that would require them to actually find time in their life to process and somehow 300 years has not been enough time. There's always something or someone more important to occupy their mind.
