Ithadel Vitalis | June 2023
Abilities: Preternatural place-sense, life-sense, stoneform, paralytic venom.
Skills: Medicine, basic sewing & tailoring, cooking, hunting & outdoor survival, basic hand-to-hand.
Hobbies: …work. Medical research. Maybe gardening.
Yet more Art Fight prep! A mix of new art and reused old art. It’s been fun to let myself get sucked into focusing on some speculative biology again. ^_^
Extra details below the cut!
.
Abilities
Place-sense:
Ithadel receives a preternatural impression of the vibes & history of a location. This is not foolproof, and is not always clear; but a place where people have frequently found safety and support will feel welcoming, a place where someone recently died will feel the echoes of that, a place of misery will feel sickening, etc. (Examples to be linked!)
Life-sense:
Ithadel can sense a vague impression of the life-force of living creatures. This generally requires physical contact and is even less precise than his place-sense, but he’s likely to notice if someone is very magically powerful, or if someone is close to death.
Stoneform:
Ithadel can shift to living, immobile stone at will (with some effort). He can shift his entire body or individual portions, though doing the latter is bad for his circulation; better than a tourniquet, but still not healthy in the long term. He can remain conscious or fall asleep, and he retains some vision, though it’s altered. He does not need air.
He has some remaining circulation in the form of lymph movement through the stone’s pores; if he is injured, the wound will ‘bleed’ in a very slow black seepage, and he will heal over time.
He can remain in stoneform indefinitely if he is in contact with the earth and receives at least some sunlight; otherwise, he will eventually run out of energy.
Paralytic venom:
Ithadel’s tail is venomous. The paralysis is not conveniently nonlethal; it will stop the heart and lungs if administered in a high enough dose for full-body paralysis.
.
Clothing:
Ithadel’s wing membranes attach in an unbroken line from his back down through his tail. As a result, the waistbands of his pants and loincloths take the form of a semi-rigid, padded hoop that clasps his waist while leaving the nape of his back open.
Ithadel can wear specialized shirts, with a buttoning strap across the back of his neck and either a loose-hanging front or an attachment to the same waist hoop. But he generally chooses not to. He is resilient to a fairly wide range of temperatures; his wings, feet, and tail all have counter-current blood exchange, and his innate magic provides him with some additional protection.
.
Disguise:
Ithadel’s human disguise is essentially a polymorph with a few clothing presets included. While disguised, his physical & tactile presence is that of a human.
.
Issues:
Right arm:
Ithadel was once right-handed. Following his injury he lost a lot of his fine motor dexterity and strength in that arm, and he now uses his left arm much more often than he used to. Long practice and physical therapy mean that he can now write slightly better with his left hand than his right. The old injury is occasionally painful.
Insomnia:
Ithadel has severe chronic insomnia. Most of the time, it’s managed well enough for him to be functional courtesy of medication and/or charms. During bad periods — namely, when his mental health interferes with whether or not he’s even attempting to sleep — he’ll sometimes become sleep-deprived enough to experience mild hallucinations (e.g. movement in the corner of his eyes) and increased paranoid thoughts. He is well-practiced at ignoring both.
.
Transcript:
Ithadel Vitalis
Principled | Irritable | Resolute | Anxious | Reticent
He/him | 5 ft 8 in (i.e. 173 cm) | Middle-aged | Demisexual
.
Touch-starved medic who will devote himself to any job that is in front of him, however small. Frequently caught between shame and self-righteousness. Grew up in a cult in the early 1300s until he was excommunicated, then became a physician during the plague of the Black Death in Europe. Chronically sleep deprived and just a bit paranoid.
Ithadel wears an enchanted necklace that provides a human disguise. His wings can be used as grasping limbs just as a bat can, and hang downwards at rest. His feet have opposable toes and retractable claws.
His right arm was shattered while he was in stoneform, then reattached. The resulting scars resemble very deep stretch marks in the pattern of cracked stone.
In human AUs, Ithadel is still a cult survivor and physician. His right arm bears the scars of several deep defensive wounds, but was not severed.
.
[Backup image description: A character sheet for Ithadel Vitalis. Ithadel is a gargoyle with a purple-gray skin, glowing yellow eyes, black horns, and a crest of spines in place of hair. He has large bat wings, prehensile feet with retractable claws, and a long thin tail with a venomous stinger at the end. He has dark purple-black blood. In human disguise and in human AUs, he is a thin man with light brown skin and long wavy black hair, going gray. Transcript for text content below the cut. End ID.]

🔴 Red & 🟤 Brown
From this munday ask prompt list!
🔴 Red - Do you have a dream AU you haven’t written in yet?
Nothing that I’ve been actively longing for, really, no!
I enjoy threads with Diamond where he doesn’t have access to as much magic & tech as he does at the Spire, but that’s not very specific and is kind of already covered with the Fallout thread. ^_^
And I guess I do vaguely consider Star Trek AUs sometimes--for Ithadel ( @justassorted ) in particular. Imagining him as a ship or space station medic is fun for me, heh. I really like the shift of him actually being a part of something, and the established relationship frameworks that an AU like that might provide.
🟤 Brown - What is a headcanon you are particularly proud of?
Hmm. Maybe that Diamond is physically affectionate and genuinely playful with the people he likes, as simple as that is? It’s not necessarily the first thing you’d expect from the general character archetype of “cynical old mage,” heh. But it’s important to me.

[Image description: A chart of character inspirations for Ithadel. The inspirations are: Granny Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching from the Discworld series; Odo from Star Trek DS9; Goliath from Gargoyles; Tal Monteblanc from the webcomic Harbourmaster; and a blank spot with a “maybe” for Murderbot as a possible recent, subconscious influence. End ID.]
.
I have watched maybe 4 episodes of Gargoyles in my life and remember next to nothing, but I am also 100% certain that seeing Goliath in commercials at a young age is what shaped my mental image of “gargoyle.” 😂
Snagged from @archerwhiterp ! Feel free to snag it and tag me in turn, these are fun to see. I’ll put the template under the cut. :)

A huge chunk of Ithadel’s reticence about socialization tends to boil down to a) his core assumption that he is not [genuinely, meaningfully] welcome or that his [non-professional] presence is in some way fundamentally detrimental, b) his paranoia about being fooled/manipulated, and c) the lovely intersection of the two.
With that in mind… I think if he ever wound up with someone where they were very upfront that they weren’t emotionally attached & about what they were getting out of the relationship instead, in a way that didn’t directly conflict with his morals, he… might actually feel a lot more relaxed about the situation. It would fit into his worldview; it would feel less like waiting for the other shoe to drop. He might take what he could get.
He might be grateful.

…So Ithadel’s double-standard is this:
In the context of his job, ensuring other people’s safety, or dealing with someone who is Actively Unpleasant, Ithadel is perfectly willing to request assistance, order people about, and in general be pretty unapologetic about life. (…to a certain degree. He does struggle more with authority figures.)
At the same time, this is a man who, for example, will be deadly ill and know full-well that he does in fact need help to get to a hospital, but will have to fight through an anxiety attack just in the process of talking himself into deciding to ask for said help.
Let alone, uh. Actually making the out-loud request. 🙃

The methods and reasons for Ithadel’s social self-isolation are many, but some of them are:
1. Ithadel literally does not ever assume that a social overture is made towards him out of anything more than obligation, politeness, or perhaps generic kindness at best.
2. Ithadel is terrified of overstepping boundaries (unless he’s pissed or concerned enough to decide that it’s objectively necessary), and so will never make friendly overtures beyond the generic expectations of polite interactions.
3. Ithadel finds it nearly a physical struggle to ask for anything that might even slightly inconvenience someone outside of his job (or other structured scenarios).
All of these are deeply steeped in trauma and/or anxiety, but because Ithadel tends to just structure his life so as to avoid the triggers for said anxiety and is good at faking calm otherwise, the net result is that he just comes across as thoroughly withdrawn and standoffish. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ithadel’s troupe was a cult; both in the social dynamics, and in that they had a very specific creation myth and strong beliefs about gargoyle’s responsibilities in relation to humans and other supernatural creatures.

🎖- Ithadel
Inspiration ask meme
send 🎖 (or “bingo!”) + a character name for receiver to list off any random thing that inspires their writing of that character!
Discworld witchcraft! Especially Tiffany’s journey of learning the importance of doing the work, even the mundane and gross work, even for crappy people. Also the theme in Tiffany's books of extraordinary purpose via different emotions than the usual ones stories often tell us should define ‘good’ people.
Medusa! This one’s very nebulous and not at all germane to anything real, but like. My brain went “stone creatures = Greece” and that is how that went. xD Especially since in early iterations Ithadel did once have a lifedrain ability that turned people to stone.
Also sort of where the stinger came from, and why his venom is a paralytic. “Stone creature = medusa = snakes = venom.” (…Honestly I really do need to read more deeply into ancient Greek stories. I suspect there might be plenty of sources of inspiration that’d be much more meaningful than the surface level connections my brain already tries to draw!)
Urban fantasy just as like. A genre. Once again, I'm a sucker for anything that juxtaposes the fantastical with the recognizable. <3 Though most of my exposure to urban fantasy consists of the Mercy Thompson series, the Dresden Files, and Buffy, so... my view of the genre is admittedly through a fairly narrow window. ^_^;
My own social hangups about “Do Not Intrude Where You Have Not Been Actively & Firmly Invited (and even then, are you sure they weren’t just being polite?)” except turned up to 11. Sorry Ithadel. :'D

Details: Ithadel
So I have played Ithadel in DnD one (1) time.
By the end of the campaign, he had taken the vows and co-opted the powers of a dying angel and was well on his way to establishing a significant power base in the literal Abyss, doing everything in his power to give hundreds of damned and/or lost souls a second chance at living a good (after)life.
(He nominally started as a paladin, but considering this was back in 4e and he punched his own [fallen] god in the face when the opportunity was presented to him...)
I’m not saying the guy is perfectly moral. And there’s a lot to be said for the influence of that particular GM’s storytelling and worldbuilding styles.
But I am saying that Ithadel is genuinely and wholeheartedly devoted to finding ways to help people, no matter how daunting or surreal the circumstances might be.
(…once he’s had a chance to collect himself. 😂)

Main verse: Spined gargoyles are very rare, and the only reason they’ve lasted as long as they have is due to their long life spans & the fact that they can have children with humans.
To Ithadel’s knowledge, based on contact with other troupes when he was still part of his own, there may be fewer than 5,000 in the world. And if their history can be trusted, that’s actually a much larger population than in past millennia.

Ithadel’s tail holds relatively still most of the time. He uses it for balance, and since it’s mildly prehensile he’ll use it to help grip things sometimes. But he’s been trained not to let it react to emotions; it doesn’t flick or lash much unless he’s distracted or overwhelmed.
Among other more cultural things, this is because it’s a weapon. While he’s hardly going to envenomate someone from just a chance collision, it’s still important to be mindful.

The type of medical practice that Ithadel does depends on the demographics of his area. If there aren’t many supernatural folk, he’ll often join a human practice or hospital and just see supernatural folk on the side.
On the occasions when Ithadel does run a dedicated solo supernatural practice, he tends to have clinic hours from 3pm to midnight or so, and makes house calls by arrangement in the mornings and on the weekends.
He makes sure that he can be contacted during emergencies at any time of day.
