Form over Function
I work for a design company and if you ask the designers about this, they would say it should be both and if something is beautiful but doesn’t work properly, that’s just bad design. The CD once threw a perfectly functional but ugly-ass electric kettle in the bin and said he’d rather die than to see that ugly kettle in the office 😬
So, I recently stayed a suite in a boutique hotel which reminds me of this design term. Everything was beautiful and unique looking, lots of thoughts were put into designing it, no doubt. At first glance, I loved it. But when I actually used the room, I quickly realised they weren’t professional hoteliers.
The bathroom sink tap is industrial style - quaint but there’s no hot water option.
The showerhead is the same industrial style - thanks heaven it has hot water - but you have to ‘climb’ into a deep bathtub to get to the control knobs (I wouldn’t recommend doing this in winter)
Only one side of the bed has a bedside table, the other side is taken up by a pretty looking Marshall speaker which we never use.
The toilet is separate from the shower - which is convenient, except there is no sink inside, which makes me a little sick (I don’t get it 😕 are we supposed to touch the door handle before washing our hands like animals? 🙄)
There is no blackout curtains and one of the window is designed to let in light at all times. I am sorry but I need my sleep?
Complimentary room slippers would be nice, especially when the floor is polished concrete?
In the end, we had to change room - not over the design of the room (that’s not a valid reason) but because of something else which has nothing to do with the design. They moved us to a different room which is less ‘showy’ and works more like a conventional hotel room (the separate toilet still has no sink - why? 🥺) At least the staff are all friendly and helpful but I just remember why I usually stick to large hotel chains… 😬
