Ok I’m going on anon because I’m pretty supportive on SMAU posts and I have been reading awhile. The author of that post talks about specifically Asian women, however in my time reading fic across multiple kpop and pop culture fandoms,I have seen white, black, latinx, desi, east/west asian face claims (yay diversity I guess?) though specifically east asian women are used as face claims more in kpop fics (not always though, I have seen the whole spectrum). I think you’re right that using someone’s face is a little touchy. And yes. For kids—minors in general—that’s a full on no. You can post a pic of baby shoes or something. There are plenty of free/no copyright/fair use photos online of like a smaller kid hand holding and bigger hand or something like that where it’s an image intended for use in multiple ways and no one’s identity is compromised.
I know a lot of kpop fics and other genres use either female kpop idols or actresses as their face claim as well. I kinda feel like that’s maybe less problematic? (Especially since we are already using the male kpop idols as face claims and name claims for what are technically our OCs) Those are public figures and their images are publicly shared to promote content and content creation. I guess I’m saying an author could always use like one of the NewJeans girls as a face claim. I mean if I was writing a SMAU about Karina then maybe I would use Sunghoon or Hee as a face claim (no idol shipping for me—strictly face claim). So I guess I’m saying if an author is wanting to use a face then…maybe just use another idol? Or an actress? Though some people make the same argument about influencers. That they can use their images because they are also posted online for a large audience? I personally don’t know where the line is (except with kid’s faces—that’s a clear no) and since I don’t write SMAU… But if I did… I would probably use a kpop idol or an actress as my face claim—IF I even chose to have one. (I know some people get really touchy about face claims in general though because…I mean no matter who your face claim is—even if it’s a pic of YOU the author—putting a specific face and a body to yn is less ‘reader insert’ for some readers. I mean it has never bothered me one bit, even in writing if there are distinctive features described—to me it’s just a story—but some people do get truly upset.)
i'm the author of that post just to clarify!! i just screenshot that from my twitter, but that's very true there's definitely more diversity in the face claims people use out there, i just think east asian face claims are more widely used in kpop and anime spaces maybe 🤧 diversity rep is great i just wish we could move towards more faceless ones?? idk just publicly posting people's faces in certain contexts just feels a little like an invasion of privacy but i'm sure people feel different ways toward that
and i agree in the context of smaus i think it makes more sense to use an idol/celebrity as a face claim !! i sort of see face claims as like casting someone in a role, so it makes more sense to use actors/idols who are already in the spotlight and have their pictures spread on the internet because their career depends on exposure and publicity (unless of course said actor/idol has stated that they don't want their face being used for such things). i was referring to a different sort of fic actually (not smaus) but yeah smaus could be a gray area too and i feel like the same rules should apply. i've read plenty of twitter social media aus where no selfies/pictures are used at all even from the idol and they've been some the best smaus i've read
children/babies are a hard no for me :( there's just so many ways to go about it without inserting a child's face,, so i rlly don't get it !! oh yes i've never exactly cared about how a reader insert looks because i always just imagine a character anyways but the privacy issue of whoever's the face claim is my main concern with it 🧎‍♀️

Ms. Marvel and exposing the systemic colorism displayed by Comicsgate bigots
So I’m about to go off on a bit of a tangent here, but for the longest time, one of the things that’s constantly enraged me about Richard C. Meyer, one of the lead ringleaders of the Neo-Nazi hate movement Comicsgate, is a particular aspect of his bigotry towards the character Ms. Marvel (aka, Kamala Khan). An element of Meyer's Islamophobic attacks against Kamala that repeatedly occurs throughout all his terrible videos bashing her comics is his repeated accusation that Kamala “doesn’t even look Pakistani.”
Yes... seriously... Richard Meyer, an cis straight white male, believes that he has the authority to claim what does and does not qualify as "looking Pakistani."
It's just as cringeworthy and racist as you can possibly imagine.
Tumblr media
So the basis of Meyer's fallacious accusation that Kamala doesn't "look Pakistani" is simply because the artists of her comics depict her as has having either dark brown or black hair along with her brown skin. Heck, Meyer has not only stated that Kamala & her family instead look “vaguely Arabic or foreign," (essentially repeating the racist talking point of all Muslim countries being culturally and ethnically monolithic), but in one of his videos he even went as far as to accuse Kamala of looking like "a white girl who spray-tanned herself to look brown."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Essentially, Meyer is accusing a Pakistani character who was created by Muslim and POC creators of engaging in literal brown face. Not only is this accusation incredibly racist, but it doesn't even made any sense whatsoever since Kamala & her family have always been depicted as being of South Asian or Desi descent. Furthermore, Kamala was explicitly modeled after her co-creator and editor Sana Amanat, who is herself a Desi Pakistani-American woman.
For the longest time I was completely dumbfounded and confused as to where Meyer was even getting these offensive ideas from. However, a few years ago I think I discovered one of the potential underlying one of the reasons as to why Meyer believes that Kamala doesn’t look “Pakistani.” And it's a reason which goes deeper than simply being a byproduct of Meyer's own ignorance and racism.
See, a lot of South Asian countries, including Pakistan, actually have a big problem in regards to issues of colorism. It's actually gotten to the point where skin-lightening creams are repeatedly advertised and marketed towards women since lighter skin is considered by some to be more 'beautiful, and this mindset can be heavily traced back to British colonialism in the Indian subcontinent.
The Ms. Marvel comics themselves even briefly commentated on the issue of colorism in Pakistan when Kamala’s older brother Aamir got engaged to Tyesha, who is a black woman, challenging his parents desire about wanting him to marry a fellow Pakistani. Even when Kamala & Aamir's parents came around to accepting and embracing Tyesha as their future daughter in-law, Aamir still expressed anxiety over whether or not his other relatives would hold anti-black attitudes towards Tyesha or any biracial children they might someday have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadly, colorism is such a widespread issue in South Asian countries that if you simply search for pictures of Pakistani women on Google Images, you’re bound to find tons of photographs of Pakistani women who have used said-skin-lightening creams. So overall, considering the historical context of colorism in countries like Pakistan, combined with Richard C. Meyer's own Islamophobic biases and his inability to do basic research on other cultures and ethnicities, I think it’s fair to assume that historical and contemporary colorism could have influenced Meyer's bigoted accusations of "Kamala and her family not even looking Pakistani."
Here are a few articles written by Pakistani women which go into much greater detail about the damaging effects that colorism in particular has had in South Asian countries:
This connection between contemporary South Asian colorism and Meyer's Post-9/11 Islamophobia further reinforced by the other examples in which he openly engages in inaccurate stereotyping of all Muslim countries being culturally monolithic. The most egregious example of this is undoubtedly Meyer's open demonization of Kamala's aforementioned older brother Aamir. Meyer constantly refers to Aamir as "looking like a shepherd" simply due to him wearing traditional Islamic attire in the form of a white thobe and taqiyah cap. He even outright, and inaccurately, calls Aamir an "ISIS bomber" in one of his awful videos, even outright stating, "Yes I'm profiling.”
He has attempted to justify his Islamophobia by stating that there’s no other reason for Aamir to wear such clothing, lying to his audience that said-clothing "shows that Aamir is unwilling to integrate into American society and therefore he should be viewed with suspicion."
Tumblr media
Where do I even begin with how racist this is?! First of all, there are plenty of Muslim Americans in the real world who wear the type of clothing Aamir wears for various religious reasons, including adhering to more orthodox beliefs or trying to emulate the Prophet Muhammad, such as the Salafi branch of Islam which Aamir adheres to. Secondly, Aamir is portrayed throughout Ms. Marvel as being a genuinely kind person despite being more traditional and conservative, someone who cares deeply for his little sister and family. Additionally, during the Last Days arc Aamir is kidnapped and forcibly given superpowers by the Inhuman extremist Kamran (aka, Kamala's evil ex-boyfriend) who's playing into Islamophobic assumptions about more traditional Muslims being more likely to engage in terrorist violence. But Aamir completely rejects the tired stereotypes that Kamran is projecting onto him, even outright stating that he doesn't want superpowers and is already happy with who and where he is in life.
Tumblr media
Thirdly, and most importantly, Meyer stating that an individual should be profiled simply on the basis of his religious clothing is on the same level of awfulness as when Frank Miller inferred in Holy Terror that all Muslim foreign exchange students should automatically be viewed as terrorists in disguise and, therefore, are to be treated with suspicion and hatred. And Franky-Boy communicates this disgusting marriage through the scene of the foreign exchange student Amina (who just so happens to be named after the Prophet Muhummad's mother... classy...) repaying a lesbian woman's hospitality by suicide-bombing both said-lesbian and a crowded party full of dozens of other civilians:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's blatant Islamophobia and disgusting propaganda on Miller's part.
So when Meyer not only describes Aamir as "looking like a terrorist" or "dressing and acting like a freaking Taliban" simply due to his clothing, but even outright states "yes I'm profiling" whilst making these comments, Meyer is treating Aamir's character with suspicion and hate simply because of his traditionalist Muslim clothing. Just like Frank Miller does with framing Amina the exchange student as a mass-murdering suicide bomber in Holy Terror. These are all classic racist Post-9/11 Islamophobic talking points derived from American imperialism, which are intrinsically connected to the racist promotion of colorism and skin-lightening creams in South Asian countries derived from British colonialism. Negative stereotypes which both Aamir's character and Ms. Marvel as a whole actively refuted throughout the runs by G. Willow Wilson & Saladin Ahmed:
Tumblr media
In other words, screw Richard C. Meyer and his blatant Islamophobia. Comicsgate is a hate group, and any and all criticisms they have made against books like Ms. Marvel are simply trojan horses designed to indoctrinate their audience with far-right talking points and prejudices. Prejudices which have their roots in both modern imperialism and historical colonialism which has negatively impacted the peoples of South Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

i'm v wary in general of anything positioning moc's struggles as uniquely difficult from the struggles that woc face. and i really do hate these discussions of "emasculation" and "feminization" of men because it all comes back to upholding a skewed idea of white cishet masculinity anyway. like okay, south asian or west asian men will platonically hold hands and kiss their friends' faces in their respective countries. but if they think one of their boys is actually gay for real, they're still gonna beat the shit out of him. yeah, not all the time, just enough that it is still a prevalent issue. but men in the west will do the same shit without being called on it (which i think is what that post was trying to say).
the problem here is not that we should be praising arab or desi men for having broader ideas of what constitutes platonic love between male friends, but that it's fuckin idiotic for western (and frankly, white) academics to position south and west asian men as UNIQUELY homophobic or transphobic, as if men in the west are not guilty of the same shit, and as if most of our countries even had these narrow notions of masculinity and sexuality prior to colonialism/imperialism.
it's a problem because this theoretical homophobia is often used as a "gotcha" by people from across the political spectrum in the west to justify committing violence and atrocities against peoples in west asia in particular (like remember when white gays were trying to say that Palestinians didn't deserve aid or sympathy because they were supposedly homophobic, even though by that metric another country could probably justify wiping out about 1/3 of the US population).
the problem is not, however, when other poc (usually woc) call out moc for engaging in and perpetuating toxic masculinity. that's the main issue i have with moc trying to claim that their problems are somehow unique to the problems that woc face, because it's (typically) moc wanting to silence any criticism of their own behaviors and how they've made their own communities more dangerous for the women and gnc poc within them. other poc calling out arab or desi men for bein toxic is not them perpetuating "neo colonialism" it's just us talking about the reality we live in lmfao

VAN JOHNSON
August 26, 1916
Tumblr media
Van Johnson was born Charles Van Dell Johnson in Newport, Rhode Island. Johnson performed while in high school. He moved to New York City after graduation in 1935 and joined the off-Broadway review Entre Nous. His acting career began in earnest in the Broadway revue New Faces of 1936.  In 1939, George Abbott cast him in Rodgers and Hart's Too Many Girls in the role of a college boy and as understudy for all three male leads.
Tumblr media
He had an uncredited role in the film adaptation of Too Many Girls (1940) which costarred Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Johnson was about to move back to New York when Lucille Ball took him to Chasen's Restaurant, where she introduced him to MGM casting director Billy Grady. This led to screen tests by Hollywood studios. Warner Brothers put him on contract at $300 a week, although it only lasted six months. Johnson was soon signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Tumblr media
He was also seen with Lucy in the MGM film Easy to Wed (1946), a remake of one  Libeled Lady with Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy. "The Screen Guild Theater" broadcast a 30 minute radio adaptation of the movie on February 16, 1948 with Van Johnson and Esther Williams reprising their film roles. "Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60 minute radio adaptation of the movie on February 27, 1950 with Van Johnson reprising his film role.
Tumblr media
On February 14, 1954, Johnson, Lucy, and Desi, joined many other celebrities on “Toast of the Town” as they marked “MGM’s 30th Anniversary”.  Lucy and Desi were promoting their MGM film The Long, Long Trailer.
Tumblr media
In “Getting Ready” (ILL S4;E11), Lucy takes a break from preparing for their trip to California to ‘name-drop’ (including Johnson’s) on the telephone with Marion:
LUCY: “Would you like me to give a message to any of the gang out there? You know, Clark, or Cary, or Van, or Marlon?”
Van Johnson is the only one of those stars (Gable, Grant, and Brando) that Lucy Ricardo (and viewers) actually meets during her Hollywood stay.
Tumblr media
In “Hollywood Anniversary” (ILL S4;E24), Ricky plants a fake publicity article about their star-studded anniversary party at the Mocambo. Van and Evie Johnson are among the stars mentioned as attendees. Sadly, Ricky later admits to Lucy that “none of those peoples are coming!”
Tumblr media
Evie Lynn Abbott was first married to Keenan Wynn (who was in Easy To Wed with Van and Lucy). She married Van Johnson on the very day of her divorce from Wynn - January 25, 1947 - only four hours after the divorce was finalized. Wynn was Johnson’s best friend and had spent a month recuperating from a near-fatal car accident at the Wynn family home. During his recovery word got back to Louis B. Mayer at MGM that sparks had flown between Evie and Johnson. The film mogul saw this as a way to dispel rumors about Johnson's sexuality.  Although they were genuinely in love, Mayer cemented the deal by providing unusual career concessions for Keenan. According to her son, Ned Wynn, Van Johnson later left Evie for a male tennis instructor. Evie and Van divorced in May 1968. They had one child together; Schuyler.
Tumblr media
Shortly afterward, Johnson played himself on one of the most popular episodes of “I Love Lucy,” “The Dancing Star” (ILL S4;E27), a show originally intended for Ray Bolger.  Lucy and Desi always knew that they could call upon their friend and co-star to do a guest appearance, but timing was crucial.
Tumblr media
Johnson was scheduled to have been “The Star Upstairs” (ILL S4;E25), but was then appearing in advertising for Lucky Strike cigarettes and could not work out the conflict with “I Love Lucy” sponsor Philip Morris in time for the filming, so he was was replaced by Cornel Wilde. This was Johnson’s television debut.
Tumblr media
In the episode, Van is performing at the hotel where the Ricardos and Mertzes are staying. When Lucy’s New York pal Caroline Appleby visits, Lucy has to hastily convince Johnson to incorporate her into his act.
Tumblr media
The two sing and dance to “How About You?” by Burton Lane and Ralph Freed.
Tumblr media
In tandem with this episode, Lucy, Desi and Van Johnson appeared on the cover of the cover of Scotland’s Picture Post Magazine in September 1955. Although the show aired in the US in May, overseas airings were typically later. Except for the studio audience attending the filming in March 1955, this may be the public’s first glimpse of Lucy’s ostrich feathered gown in glorious color!
Tumblr media
After Van Heflin turned down the role of Elliot Ness on Desilu’s crime drama  “The Untouchables” (1959) it was offered to Johnson. He turned it down as well. The role eventually went to Robert Stack.
Tumblr media
In October 1960, Johnson did a guest spot on Desilu’s “The Ann Sothern Show” as television writer Terry Tyler. Lucille Ball had played Lucy Ricardo on the series a year earlier.
Tumblr media
Like many character actors of the time, Johnson played a “Batman” villain: The Minstrel, in 1968 (right). In 1957, he had played “The Pied Piper” on television and Minstrel was undoubtedly inspired by that role.
Tumblr media
In 1968, Johnson was billed below Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda in Yours, Mine and Ours.
Tumblr media
Johnson plays a naval officer who fixes up his friend (Henry Fonda) with a nurse. Between the two of them, they have 19 kids!
Tumblr media
The film was referenced when Johnson played himself (and his nefarious doppelganger) in “Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50″ (HL S1;E11).
Van Johnson (Impostor): “I loved working with that kooky redhead.” Lucy Carter: “Personally, I thought she was much too young for Henry Fonda.”
Tumblr media
Lucy Carter loans Van Johnson money to fix his car – but the man turns out to be an impostor. In return, Lucy wants the real Van Johnson to fly to Dallas to sing “Happy Birthday” to a cow named Ethel!  (No kidding!)
Tumblr media
In the episode, Lucy Carter praises Johnson’s film The Romance of Rosy Ridge (1946), claiming to have seen it 17 times!  The film was Janet Leigh’s screen debut.
Tumblr media
Angry at Johnson, Lucy says that she’s glad he got court martialed in The Caine Mutiny. This is the second mention of  The Caine Mutiny on the series. The previous one referred to the book by Herman Woulk that served as the basis for the screenplay.  A stage play adaptation was mentioned on “Lucy Meets Orson Welles” (ILL S6;E3) by Miss Hannah, Lucy’s high school drama teacher.
Tumblr media
In May 2017 CBS revived “The I Love Lucy Superstar Special” with colorized versions of “The Dancing Star” (ILL S4;E27) starring Van Johnson and  “Lucy Meets Harpo Marx” (ILL S4;E28).
Tumblr media
Van Johnson was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for playing March Goodwin in “Rich Man, Poor Man” (1976). He lost to Gordon Jackson of “Upstairs Downstairs.”
Tumblr media
In 1985, Lucille Ball, Lucie Arnaz, Van Johnson and 97 other celebrities were part of “Night of 100 Stars II” at Radio City Music Hall.
Tumblr media
In the 1980s and ‘90s Johnson returned to theatre, touring and playing dinner theatres as well as appearing on Broadway in the musical La Cage Aux Folles in 1985.  His last musical role was as Cap' Andy in Show Boat in 1991.
In 1993, he was included in the Emmy-Winning documentary film “Lucy & Desi: A Home Movie”.
Tumblr media
In 2000, Johnson remembered Lucille Ball as part of “Finding Lucy,” a documentary on PBS.
He died in 2008 at age 92.

Episode list[edit]
No.TitleDirected byWritten byOriginal air date[1]1'My Story' Transcription: 'Ore no Monogatari' (Japanese: 俺のものがたり)Kotono WatanabeNatsuko TakahashiApril 8, 2015Takeo Gōda is a large gorilla-like boy who, despite being admired by his male peers, has had little luck with romance. Every girl he develops a crush on ends up falling for his best friend, Makoto 'Suna' Sunakawa, who always rejects their affections. Shortly after entering high school, Takeo rescues a girl named Rinko Yamato from being molested on the train. He ends up getting suspended from school after punching the molester at the police station. Rinko, thankful for her rescue, takes an interest in Takeo and offers to bake various treats for him, though Takeo assumes that Makoto is the one she likes.2'My Romance' Transcription: 'Ore no Koi' (Japanese: 俺の恋)Nanako ShimazakiNatsuko TakahashiApril 15, 2015Takeo tries to figure out the mystery behind Makoto, who has never shown any interest in girls despite being popular with them. As the two meet up with Rinko again, Takeo, convinced Makoto is the one she likes, tells her about all the times Makoto has helped him out. Later, after the pair exchange contact details with Rinko, a large construction girder comes crashing down towards Rinko, forcing Takeo to step in to protect her. Despite being urged by Takeo to get to safety, Makoto and Rinko stay behind to help hold up the girder until help arrives. Afterwards, Rinko asks to meet up with Takeo without Makoto, though Takeo assumes she is seeking advice on her relationship with Makoto.3'My Blue Ogre' Transcription: 'Ore no Ao Oni' (Japanese: 俺の青鬼)Hideki HosokawaNatsuko TakahashiApril 22, 2015As Rinko meets up with Takeo, she becomes upset when all he does is talk up Makoto. When Takeo comes to his place for advice, Makoto clearly tells Takeo that he is the one Rinko is in love with, clearing up any misunderstandings he may have had. Makoto further clarifies that the reason he's rejected every girl who's confessed to him is because they all insulted Takeo behind his back. When Rinko comes over, Makoto hides Takeo under his bed and has Rinko clearly express her feelings for Takeo over and over so that he understands it, after which Takeo and Rinko properly confess to each other face-to-face and begin dating.4'My Boyfriend' Transcription: 'Uchi no Kareshi' (Japanese: うちの彼氏)Makoto FuchigamiNatsuko TakahashiApril 29, 2015Rinko invites Takeo to bring some of his male friends, Makoto included, to a singles' meet with some of her friends, who are surprised by Rinko's new boyfriend. Midway through the meet, Rinko becomes upset and runs away when she and Takeo overhear her friends, Aya and Nanako, badmouth Takeo behind their backs. Takeo catches up to her, stating that he doesn't care about the bad things people say about him because he is happy Rinko has been saying nice things about him. Just then, a fire breaks out at the building the meet was being held at, with Aya and Nanako still trapped inside. Takeo rushes in to save them, but gets trapped under some rubble himself after the girls have escaped safely. However, thanks to an encouraging phone call from Suna, Takeo gains the strength to stand up and escape the building by jumping through the second-story window, after which Rinko's friends now see him as cool as she does.5'I'm Dense' Transcription: 'Ore wa Nibui' (Japanese: 俺はニブイ)Kumiko HabaraSeiko TakagiMay 6, 2015As word spreads around class about Takeo and Rinko's relationship, Takeo saves a child from drowning on his way to another date. The pair take a stroll through the park at night, where Takeo appears to miss some subtle hints from Rinko. Makoto is visited by his older sister Ai, who is shocked to hear Takeo has a girlfriend, having had a crush on him herself. The next day, Ai brings herself along to Takeo's next date to meet Rinko, who becomes shocked when she learns she messed up the cookies she baked. Rinko feels relieved that Takeo likes them anyway, but becomes downhearted when he mentions how pure she is, something Ai is keen to pick up on. Noticing Takeo realise his own denseness and putting in the effort to try and understand Rinko, Ai offers to speak to Rinko about what's bothering her.6'My Wish' Transcription: 'Ore no Negai' (Japanese: 俺のねがい)Tomoya TakahashiSeiko TakagiMay 13, 2015While Takeo studies up on shoujo manga in the hopes of better understanding girls, Makoto and Ai meet up with Rinko, who confesses that she wants to become more intimate with Takeo, but is afraid of telling him as he'll think she is impure. Putting her own happiness aside, Ai encourages Rinko to tell Takeo how she really feels, later telling Makoto about how she fell for Takeo. Catching up to Rinko, Takeo listens to each of her small demands, accepting them without argument. Rinko then confesses that she previously lied a few times in order to have an excuse to keep seeing Takeo, which just makes Takeo even happier. That night, as Ai makes her way back home, Rinko sees her first shooting star while Takeo asks Makoto to practice kissing with him, which is met with futile resistance.7'My Strength' Transcription: 'Ore no Tsuyosa' (Japanese: 俺の強さ)Kotono WatanabeSeiko TakagiMay 20, 2015Takeo agrees to join the judo club for a month in order to help them in an upcoming match against a rival school, despite the fact it'll give him less time to spend with Rinko. This time lessens further when Takeo asks Rinko not to meet him at night out of fear for her safety. As Rinko holds herself back from seeing Takeo to avoid interfering with his training, she tells Makoto about the reasons she fell in love with Takeo. On the day of the match, Takeo's opponent, Tsuyoshi Iwayama, feels that Takeo would have gotten soft from having a girlfriend, but Takeo manages to prove otherwise and wins the match for his team using the strength he gained from Rinko.8'My Friend' Transcription: 'Ore no Tomodachi' (Japanese: オレのトモダチ)Nanako ShimazakiNatsuko TakahashiMay 27, 2015While wondering what to do for Rinko's birthday on June 15, Takeo learns from his mother that he'll become a big brother come January. Claiming he has something else to do on the day of Rinko's birthday, Makoto instead helps Takeo with his plans for Rinko's birthday, becoming quite amused by his own memories his suggestions bring up. As Takeo takes on a part-time job at a café to earn money for a present for Rinko, he learns that Makoto's father had been hospitalized and is to undergo surgery on June 15. As Makoto urges Takeo not to abandon his plans with Rinko to accompany him, Takeo decides to respect his wishes.9'My Friend and I' Transcription: 'Ore to Tomodachi' (Japanese: オレとトモダチ)Hideki HosokawaNatsuko TakahashiJune 3, 2015On June 15, after seeing Makoto off, Takeo begins his birthday outing with Rinko, following the plan that Makoto had laid out for him. After spending the day bowling and going to a fancy restaurant, Takeo keeps thinking about Makoto and tells Rinko about his father's surgery. Understanding Takeo's wishes, Rinko encourages him to go visit Makoto and stay by his side during his father's surgery. After the surgery goes successfully, Takeo and Makoto find Rinko waiting for them, enjoying her birthday despite the sudden change in plans.10'My Mountain' Transcription: 'Ore no Yama' (Japanese: 俺の山)Ryōichi KurayaSeiko TakagiJune 10, 2015Takeo and Rinko go on a picnic in the mountains to make up for her birthday being interrupted. When a hawk tries to steal the brooch Takeo had bought for Rinko, the pair end up falling off the mountain, landing safely thanks to Takeo's efforts but winding up in an unknown part of the woods. As the pair try to make their way back to civilization, Rinko becomes anxious about having to spend the night alone with Takeo. That night, as Takeo goes to sleep, Rinko decides to give him a peck on the cheek. The next morning, Takeo and Rinko get to meet some woodland critters before reaching the roadside, after which they are able to get home safely.11'My Ocean' Transcription: 'Ore no Umi' (Japanese: 俺の海)Nanako ShimazakiSeiko TakagiJune 17, 2015Rinko invites Takeo and his friends to join her and her friends to the beach. As Rinko's friends encourage her to make her boyfriend's heart skip with a new swimsuit, Takeo remains determined to keep the beach experience purely about swimming and avoid looking at her in a lecherous way. Rinko starts feeling embarrassed at her failed attempts to become closer with Takeo, but the two eventually get to share a romantic view of the sunset together, though are interrupted before they can share their first kiss.12'My Grades' Transcription: 'Ore no Hensachi' (Japanese: 俺の偏差値)Makoto FuchigamiNatsuko TakahashiJune 24, 2015Hearing about Rinko wanting to go to the same college as him, Takeo asks Makoto to help him prepare for an upcoming benchmark exam so he can go to Rinko's university of choice. As Rinko comes around to help Takeo with his studies, Takeo's parents take extra measures to leave a good impression on their son's girlfriend, prompting Takeo to take his studies to Makoto's room. During the exam, Takeo manages to confidently get through the test with what he learned, only to discover he wrote all his answers in the wrong places, and though he rushes to fix his mistake he ends up with poor marks. As Rinko assures Takeo that they can both go to another college together, she points out the university Takeo took the test for was actually a women's college and he wouldn't have been able to go there anyway, something Suna had known all along.13'Today Is All On Me' Transcription: 'Kyō wa Ore no Ogori da' (Japanese: 今日は俺のおごりだ)Norihiko NagahamaSeiko TakagiJuly 1, 2015Takeo and Rinko hold a surprise birthday outing for Makoto, with Takeo treating both of them. While at Takeo's workplace, the group meet Hayato Oda, one of Ai's acquaintances from university who came to see the boy she turned him down for. Later, after Takeo becomes concerned over Rinko turning down a trip to an amusement park, Ai and Hayato get Rinko to reveal she is cautious about a rumored jinx that causes couples who go there to break up. Since the jinx seems to only apply to dates, Hayato suggests that they make it a group outing with everyone. That night, Hayato spends the night at Takeo's place, where he explains how he fell in love with Ai. The next morning, Hayato reveals to Ai his intentions to separate Takeo from Rinko so she can confess her feelings to him.14'My Jinx' Transcription: 'Ore no Jinkusu' (Japanese: 俺のジンクス)Kotono WatanabeSeiko TakagiJuly 8, 2015While at the amusement park, Hayato takes Rinko and Makoto with him in order to give Ai a chance to be alone with Takeo. As the two go on a wild goose chase searching for them, Ai comes close to confessing to Takeo, but unltimately decides against it, feeling that his obliviousness is what she likes about him. Instead she encourages Rinko to ignore the jinx and watch the evening parade with Takeo.15'My Girlfriend' Transcription: 'Ore no Kanojo' (Japanese: 俺の彼女)Nanako ShimazakiNatsuko TakahashiJuly 15, 2015Takeo is participating in the upcoming sports festival on the class's Swedish relay team. The team runs into trouble when one of their fast runners sprains her ankle, and is replaced with the slower Mariya Saijou. Feeling that Mariya isn't as slow as everyone says she is, Takeo starts training her to run faster and ends up accidentally motivating her to run faster only because she was afraid the much faster Takeo would run her over. On the day of the festival, Mariya trips, but is encouraged by Takeo to get the baton over to him, allowing the team to win by a landslide. Afterwards, Mariya gives Takeo a towel as a thank-you gift, causing Rinko to become concerned that she might be a rival for Takeo's affections. A few days later, after Takeo helps her out with a twisted ankle, Mariya tells Takeo that she likes him as a person and asks to be his disciple, giving Rinko some relief.16'My Disciple' Transcription: 'Ore no Deshi' (Japanese: 俺の弟子)Hideki Hosokawa migmiNatsuko TakahashiJuly 22, 2015Takeo and the others invite Mariya to join them for a festival being held at a university, with Rinko and Mariya bonding over their admiration for Takeo. Later, Makoto catches on that Mariya's feelings towards Takeo are indeed romantic, telling her that keeping them inside will only hurt her. Spurred on by Makoto's advice, Mariya confesses her feelings to Takeo, getting turned down in the process. Following this, Takeo realises that the reason Rinko shouldn't have to worry about him isn't because he is allegedly unpopular with the girls, but rather that he doesn't have eyes for any other girl but Rinko. Takeo reaffirms his love for Rinko while remaining good friends with Mariya.17'My Christmas' Transcription: 'Ore no Kurisumasu' (Japanese: 俺のクリスマス)Hazuki Mizumoto Ippei YokotaSeiko TakagiJuly 29, 2015While preparing for a Christmas party, Takeo learns that his friend Osamu Kurihara hopes to confess to Rinko's friend Nanako. Takeo and Rinko decide to do what they can to get them together. During the party however, Kurihara's overly pushy personality ends up angering Nanako, who ends up storming off when he has Takeo step in to protect her from delinquents instead of protecting her himself. After receiving some tough encouragement from Takeo to man up, Kurihara obtains a star from the top of a giant Christmas tree in order to prove himself to Nanako, and the two finally confess to each other.18'My Birthday' Transcription: 'Ore no Tanjōbi' (Japanese: 俺の誕生日)Nanako ShimazakiSeiko TakagiAugust 5, 2015Hearing about how Osamu and Nanako have already kissed, Takeo contemplates waiting for the right time to kiss Rinko, while Rinko gets advice from Makoto and Ai about trying to kiss him herself. On New Year's Day, Takeo's birthday, Rinko goes with Takeo on a shrine visit before coming over to his place, where they are visited by many of Takeo's old friends. After finally getting some time alone, Rinko works up the courage to kiss Takeo while his eyes are closed making his birthday wish. Only after speaking with Makoto does Takeo realise he's been kissed and immediately rushes over to Rinko's home to have a second first kiss.19'My Mom' Transcription: 'Ore no Kaa-chan' (Japanese: 俺のかあちゃん)Makoto FuchigamiNatsuko TakahashiAugust 12, 2015Rinko hears from Takeo's mother, Yuriko, about Takeo's birth and how he became so overprotective of her. Takeo tells Rinko about how he was 4300 grams (9 pounds 5 ounces) at birth, and Rinko tells Takeo she was born prematurely and weighed less than 2000 grams (4 pounds 4 ounces) and had to be kept in an incubator. As Takeo becomes concerned about Yuriko being so active near the end of her pregnancy, his father Yutaka talks about how he came to fall in love with her. Shortly after protecting another pregnant woman from falling down some stairs, Yuriko feels a pain in her stomach and has to be hospitalized, leaving Takeo understandably worried. As Rinko and Makoto come in to give Takeo their support, Yuriko goes into labor, with Takeo helping to carry Yuriko when she offers her wheelchair to another pregnant woman. With help from the safe birth charm Rinko gave her, Yuriko gives birth to a large but healthy baby girl, Maki, who at 4200 grams (9 pounds 3 ounces) is only slightly smaller than Takeo was. Rinko happily declares she wishes to work with children, either as a midwife or a nursery teacher.20'My Chocolate' Transcription: 'Ore no Chokorēto' (Japanese: 俺のチョコレート)Tōru TakahashiSeiko TakagiAugust 19, 2015With Valentine's Day approaching, Rinko invites all of her friends to make chocolate together on the 13th while Takeo's friends ask to hang out with the girls on the 14th. As the girls and guys meet up on the 14th, Takeo becomes overly excited over what chocolate he'll receive from Rinko, only to become stunned when she leaves for home early without giving him any. Takeo assumes that the cookies he received earlier was in fact the chocolate in question and he regrets not having savoured it, only for Rinko to show up with her proper chocolate that she specially prepared just for him. Yuriko ends up berating Takeo for constantly waking up Maki with his overjoyed shouting.21'The Letter and Me' Transcription: 'Ore to Tegami' (Japanese: 俺と手紙)Kotono WatanabeNatsuko TakahashiAugust 26, 2015Takeo comes across a girl named Yukika Amami, who has had a crush on Makoto since kindergarten, but hasn't had the courage to talk to him for the past ten years. Upon being given an opportunity to actually speak to Makoto, Yukika ends up blurting her confession immediately. Recognising her as the girl who gives him an anonymous Valentines each year, Makoto agrees to exchange details with Yukika in order to get to know her better before making a decision. As Yukika continues to struggle to talk to Makoto properly, Rinko offers her own advice, suggesting that they all go to the zoo together.22'The Letter to Me' Transcription: 'Ore e no Tegami' (Japanese: オレへの手紙)Nanako ShimazakiSeiko TakagiSeptember 2, 2015While on their outing to the zoo, Yukika continues to struggle with talking directly to Makoto, but eventually manages to work her way up to casual conversation. Later, Yukika manages to win a quiz contest with Makoto, managing to talk a lot more with him during the rest of the day. The next day, however, Yukika becomes convinced that Makoto only accompanied her out of kindness and not because of love, feeling that she should just give up and break off her ties with everyone. Not wanting things to end just like that, Takeo and Rinko catch up to her, helping her understand her feelings. Afterwards, Makoto gives Yukika a gift in return for the chocolates she gave him every year, properly turning her down while still leaving her with happy memories.23'My Spring Break' Transcription: 'Uchi no Haruyasumi' (Japanese: うちの春休み)Tōru TakahashiSeiko TakagiSeptember 9, 2015During spring break, Rinko takes a part-time job at a cake shop, catching the attention of the shop's assistant, Kouki Ichinose. While getting used to the job, Rinko helps Kouki to sell some of his own cake ideas, which he starts to misinterpret as her having feelings for him. This leads to some jealousy from Takeo, as Kouki starts speaking with Rinko on a first name basis, something Takeo has not yet done himself. Upon finding out that Takeo is Rinko's boyfriend, Kouki tries to convince him to break up with her, believing himself to be the better man for her. Takeo becomes concerned that Kouki may have a point, especially after seeing him giving a lift to Rinko in his car. Kouki asks Rinko to help him in a patissiére contest.24'My Heart' Transcription: 'Ore no Kokoro' (Japanese: 俺のココロ)Hideki Hosokawa Kotono Watanabe Morio AsakaNatsuko TakahashiSeptember 23, 2015[2]Rinko offers to take Takeo out on her day off, only to have to cancel it at Kouki's request. As Takeo starts questioning if it is alright to be with Rinko, her friends assure him that Rinko chose him for who he is, strengthening his resolve to not lose to Kouki. Resolving to win the patissiére contest and confess his feeling towards Rinko, Kouki gets inspiration from Rinko's gushing about Takeo to create a unique sweet for the contest. On the day of the contest, Kouki ends up leaving his cake-making tools at the store, so Rinko asks Takeo to get them to him before the contest starts. Thanks to the support of both Rinko and Takeo, Kouki manages to win the gold medal and makes his confession to Rinko, who chooses to stay with Takeo and assures Kouki that he won through his own effort. Afterwards, Takeo starts calling Rinko by her first name, bringing their relationship a small step further.

what has momina said about feminism? also what do you think if her? Personally, i think she's kinda overrated :/
Initially, I was really happy when Momina’s career started with Afreen Afreen because it was another female in a male-dominated industry who was talented and pretty. I really like her as a singer, i enjoy all her songs (i know she hasn’t written any of them but her voice is A+).
She’s a little strange to me because she immediately became engaged after her coke studio debut and said im getting engaged because of the attention I’m getting and my parents thought this was a good idea from the un-wanted attention (poorly misquoted). ???????? what?????? why hold your fans accountable for the attention you are receiving and then cashing-in on the popularity with this news. Secondly, when the news became public about her broken engagement, she decided to justify herself.  I think this is a big mistake celebrities make, you owe no one an explanation. it was a mess from my limited pr perspective.
Her whole i’m just a quiet nice girl persona seems fake to me sometimes. In a Siddysays interview, she goes I liked to dress up to classes to show off that a girl is present. For a person who claims they don’t want the attention sure loves boasting about her looks and how much she likes to dress up. This might just be me but it gives me the i love the attention but i’m gonna pretend to be humble type of thing.
Momina may be strategic or I may be thinking too deeply into this but her instagram posts of her dining at international restaurants piss me off because her captions are like eating this but missing my Pakistani food. I think its strategic because knowing how possessive and proud Pakistani’s get, i feel it gives her brownie points from the audience and she cashes in on that desiness sentiment.
MORE IMPORTANTLY: Momina says she’s not a feminist which is very dumb of her. Momina has said she wants to inspire young girls to sing and follow their dreams. She has also been in PSAs about domestic violence women face. Why is she doing all of this when women don’t deserve the same amount of respect as men? Clearly there is a discrepancy between the way men and women are treated that you need to create these PSAs. She’s really confused to say the least.
But then we have the whole “Qandeel Baloch is not an epitome of women empowerment. If anything, she was portraying the opposite: the only asset a woman has is her body.” What kind of a privileged women-hating statement is that? Why shouldn’t she be allowed to use her body to empower others and herself? Women are told what their limits are by society, while she thinks being a singer is not vulgar, in a different household a girl is probably not allowed to walk outside her home without a dupatta and a male escort. Everyone’s definition of empowerment/freedom is different. And that’s why we have to encourage all types of female empowerment because at the end of the day, it’s the men who have created these restrictions. Qandeel Baloch was empowering women to make their own decisions/choices to do whatever they want with their bodies. to me, that’s empowerment.
Also, even if she disagreed with Qandeel Baloch’s lifestyle, we can’t ignore that she was a victim of honor killing (something mainly done to women, yet we don’t need feminism). by making your tweet more about her lifestyle, you ignore the bigger picture that women LITERALLY get killed for doing what they want to do.
I love that Humaima and Dua Malik called her out for her selective feminism because Momina came at Mahira Khan’s defense for choosing to live her life as she wanted. yet accused Qandeel Baloch of using her sexuality as a selling point/product (btw Momina is using her voice as a product just pointing out the hypocrisy). like momina do you not see how both Mahira and Qandeel were victims of harassment and sexism.

1. It was consensual. You forgot the word STATUTORY to demonise him without context, and this argument is useless because we don’t know the legal age on the ark. It contains many nationalities, not just American, and the legal age is 16 in most countries.
So Lincoln, Maya and Raven are rapist pedophiles too, right? Since they slept with people below 18? Can you just stop encouraging this shit from your anons? SO many young girls follow you ad everyone is calling Bellamy a rapist now based on nothing. You just decided the legal age on the ark was 18 and ran with it. Maybe think about why it’s gross to call a brown man a pedophile and rapist when a. You don’t know the laws and b. 3 other characters slept with minors too. Why are you insisting on presenting him as some creepy sleazy predator?
You condemning him for murder and abuse is so gross and your double standards are so obvious it’s sick. You should really read this meta by Southeast and South Asians and actually try to understand you’re not in the right when it comes to racism Asians face just because you’re a POC, and you can’t just keep saying they’re ignorant and wrong about their own history and culture and the prejudice they face.
Why is this anon calling a QWOC who ship Clexa “blarke” and “becky”? Something you’ve consistently done to QWOC Braven shippers who defend Bellamy? Like, why pretend like only white Bellarke shippers care about Bellamy, when Filipino women have called you out on your aggressive and obsessive racism towards Asians multiple time?
For example, defending the bindi to Desi fans? You just ignored them the minute they confronted you. Right now you just called religious appropriation “baseless bindi discourse”.
Tumblr media
You’ve ignored every Desi blogger who has tried to tell you it is a bindi. You’re trying your hardest to convince the hordes of young girls following you that racism is okay when done in the name of hot white girls. Are you Hindu? Then how are you in a position to speak over Hindus and claim their knowledge of their religion and culture is baseless? Like, you constantly say your hatred of Bellamy is ignored because you’re a WOC and we always get screwed over for men, but Desi and FIlipino WOC are fucking idiots?
Bellamy fans get defensive because you’re being racist and most of us asre people of colour. You can keep pretending like every Bellamy fan is a white girl names Becky but almost everyone who defends him on here is Southeast or South Asian. How about next time you read what we have to say on racism instead of mocking us for being defensive? When you’re literally WRONGFULLY calling our rep a rapist genocidal xenophobe because you’re bigots who have convinced yourselves none of this is motivated by racism and you’re fighting the good fight by ignoring literally everything they say and then calling them “becky” and telling them to “grow the fuck up.”
2. You want a textbook white saviour to kill another POC? After 2 more were killed last week? Despite the terrifyingly high body count? Do you ever acknowledge how Clarke and Lexa are white supremacists and have extremely racist characters? Have you demonised them for their “abuse”? Have you ever acknowledge their privilege? Or how ABUSIVE the white women are?
3. You have no problem calling Bellamy xenophobic for fighting back a white woman but Clarke saying grounders are savages or wanting to leave them while Bellamy wanted to help them, is nothing? And genocidal…. like, every single character on the 100 has committed genocide including Clarke. Bellamy taking part in a massacre, by POC, was retaliation to the army of a white woman who had been trying to exterminate them, is xenophobic of him. Think about what you’re saying here. A white girl in bindi and brownface gets zero flack for trying to wipe out a group with as many if not more POC than the grounders for months, and fighting back makes the black and brown arkers genocidal?
4. Bob has spoken about the racism he’s faced and how much playing Bellamy means to him/how important it is multiple times. Can you stop rewriting the facts to prove your obsession with his race right? Asians have asked you to stop many times, and pointed out how bad your logic is, and yet you act like a kid playing him for 2 minutes determines his race rather than the man playing him for 4 seasons/the audience is going to go by 1 flashback rather than seasons of the brown man they see. Would you say Izzy Lightwood is white, or Lavender Brown is black then? (that’s the race of the actors who play them as children) Or is that just another one of your double standards?
5. You are LYING, Bellamy never once said he killed those grounders because he was mad Clarke was not there, he killed them because they were a threat to the survival of this people. Here’s how you’re making it up- by ignoring canon:
Tumblr media
6. Are you serious?
He is protective of Octavia because since was like 6 his mother told him she’s his responsibility and he had to put her above all else. They grew up knowing she would be killed for existing and he had to protect her. His mother was killed by the government in front of him for giving birth to her. Like, do you actually not understand how these traumatised people who grew up in a hostile atmosphere work? Or is it just convenient to ignore the reasons and call him an abusive brother?
Why isnt Clarke a xenophobic prick, or Lexa? She explicitly said all grounders are savages like… your double standards are scary. You straight up ignore the shit hot white girls do and call for the death of a Southeast Asian man because your refuse to understand their role in the war or his motives.
How is saying “This is who I've always been, and I let you and Octavia and can convince me that we could trust these people when they have shown over and over again who they are, and I won’t let anyone else die for that mistake.” not owning up? How is it passing the blame on? Did you even watch past 3x07? Or remember seasons 1 and 2? How dies he not cooperate with or care about anyone when he went on a suicide mission for CL, freed child slaves, fought with Clarke because he wanted grounders in the bunker, etc?
Bellamy does not get away with things. (season 1, season 2, season 3). You’re literally endorsing reverse racism here. The fandom hates him, there are posts with 10k notes lying about him and calling him abusive for things he never did.
None of what you say is “right there”, it’s all lies or double standards. You’ve been proudly advocating for racism for over a year now. You keep claiming Bellamy fans have no proof or arguments, or just unnecessarily call everything racism, even though that is not true and many have tried to talk to you. You can’t use that excuse anymore since I just linked you to multiple posts that have all the “proof” you need.
If a BC shipper was this obsessed with proving Lexa a demon you would label them a creepy lesbophobe, but here you are, claiming that people who are calling out your LIES are wrong and blinded by his race. You’re being racist, and then telling Asian POC who ask you to stop that they’re idiots and if they call out your double standards they’re “letting him get away with shit because of his race”. That’s circular logic that ensures you have a free pass to be racist all you want and POC have no right to ask you to stop since you think you are always right and they are wrong about THEIR PEOPLE AND THE RACISM THEY FACE.
But I’m pretty sure just like you ignore every single Asian who calls you out, you’ll ignore this, so you can continue pretending that we’re horny straight white girls with nothing to back up our defence of him and just think he’s hot. Because you think you have the right to decide for other people’s rep, you think you have the right to tell Filipino people that the first male lead they’ve ever had is a white man, is the devil incarnate for reasons your faves are guilty of too.
Just leave Asians alone. I don’t know what we ever did to you but please stop actively hurting us. And stop thinking your voice matters more than ours when it comes to our representation, culture, and racism we face. Why is it so hard for you to accept you don’t know better than actual Asians, acknowledge you might be wrong, stop being so condescending and obsessive and viciously hateful, and actually start listening to us?

Note
So "cisbent" then, still wrong. Why would you diminish female Lexa for a male instead of using a female desi face claim?
because lexa’s main aspects no offense to lexa fans were that she was a tirkru kid, the commander and lgbt representation. cisbending the character takes none of that away, he’s still a tirkru kid, the commander, and lgbt representation —- the only thing that it takes away is the clex.a relationship which was toxic in the first place so i see no problem erasing a relationship that had power-trip dynamics, disturbing to me, and was frankly rushed.

VAN DYKE & COMPANY
December 9, 1976 (S1;E9)
Tumblr media
Directed by John Moffitt
Written by George Burditt, Garry Ferrier, Ken Finkelman, Mitch Markovitz, Don Novello, Pat Proft, Leonard Ripps, Mickey Rose, Aubrey Tadman, Paul Wayne, Dick Van Dyke
Tumblr media
Dick Van Dyke (Himself, Host / Various Characters) was born Richard Wayne Van Dyke in West Plains, Missouri, in 1925. Although he'd had small roles beforehand, Van Dyke was launched to stardom in the 1960 Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie, for which he won a Tony Award. He reprised his role in the 1963 film. He has starred in a number of other films throughout the years including Mary Poppins (1964) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). From 1961 to 1966 he played TV writer Rob Petrie in “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”  He also starred in “The New Dick Van Dyke Show” (1971-74), “Van Dyke & Company” (1976), and “Diagnosis Murder” (1993-2001).
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Herself, Various Characters) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes.
Tumblr media
The Lockers was a male lock dance troupe first known as the Campbell Lockers formed by Toni Basil and Don Campbell in 1971. They were pioneers of street dance. They appeared on “The Tonight Show,” “Saturday Night Live,” and “What's Happening!!”  This is their final TV appearance.
Andy Kaufman (Andy) was a performance artist and comedian. He is best known for playing Latka Gravas on the TV sitcom “Taxi.”  Andy appeared in movies, on Broadway, did a one man show at Carnegie Hall, enjoyed a brief professional wrestling career, and performed in concerts nationwide. He died in 1984 of lung cancer.
Kaufman is not credited in the opening title sequence nor in the closing voice over credits. This was likely to lend veracity to his continual habit of ‘crashing’ the show and interrupting Van Dyke's guests.
L.A. Mime Company
John Wheeler (Mr. Haley, Network Executive) was in the New York stage productions of Wonderful Town (also on TV in 1958) and Sweet Charity (also the film 1969). He was seen opposite Lucille Ball as Judge Breghoff in the movie Mame. He appeared on one episode of “Here's Lucy” (S6;E16) in 1974. Coincidentally, he played Fred Mertz in the TV film “Lucy and Desi: Before the Laughter” in 1991.
Barry Van Dyke (Honey #2 / Helen's Paramour) was Dick Van Dyke's son born in July 1951, just two weeks after Lucie Arnaz. Like Lucie, he made his screen debut on his parent's TV show in 1962 and went on to larger roles in subsequent series'. Probably his most famous of those roles was as Steve Sloan in “Diagnosis Murder” (1993-2001).
It is a bit odd that Van Dyke's real son is playing (who is inferred to be) his male lover in the “Honey, I'm Home” sketch.
Judy Von Wormer had played one of the singers in “Lucy, The Co-Ed” (HL S3;E6) in 1970.
Brian Bruno and Barney, The Paul Family
Stu Nahan (Announcer)
Tumblr media
“Van Dyke & Company” was a short-lived variety show that aired on NBC from September 20, 1976 to December 30, 1976. A pilot episode was shot in October 1975, but the series did not debut for another 11 months.
Tumblr media
In a 1965 appearance on “Art Linkletter's House Party” Lucille Ball said that “The Dick Van Dyke Show” was her favorite television program. The series was shot at Desilu Studios. It took 11 years for Van Dyke and Ball to collaborate. This is the first time Ball and Van Dyke have acted opposite each other, although the two had appeared as guests on “Salute to Stan Laurel” in 1965.
Tumblr media
A week before her appearance on “Van Dyke & Company,” Dick Van Dyke appeared on “CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years” paying tribute to Lucy's skill at pantomime (something both were adept at and demonstrate here) from the set of his show. In 2001, Van Dyke co-hosted “I Love Lucy's 50th Anniversary Special.”
Tumblr media
Genealogists claim that Lucy and Van Dyke are distant relatives. They are 10th cousins, once removed.
Tumblr media
This episode of “Van Dyke & Company” was aired by MeTV on August 6, 2017 (Lucy's birthday). The entire series is available on DVD from MPI Video. Bonus features include audio from Van Dyke as a guest on “Let's Talk to Lucy,” Ball's 1964-65 radio show. For this episode, only Andy Kaufman's Elvis impersonation has been omitted, likely due to royalty restrictions.
On December 15, 1976, less than a week after this episode of “Van Dyke & Company” aired, Lucille Ball was on the dais for “The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” of Danny Thomas.
Tumblr media
A cold open (pre-credits) has Dick paying a visit to the grand opening of “The New You Shop” staffed by Lucy, in a wordless physical comedy sketch. The premise has Lucy selling new 'body parts' (invisible and pantomimed with the help of sound effects) such as legs, chests, hands, faces, and feet.
Tumblr media
Trying on the parts inside 'The New You Machine', something goes horribly wrong. Dick emerges with arms that scrape the ground and a hand on the end of his foot!
Tumblr media
In Dick's monologue he demonstrates the differences in the family hour format as opposed to later time slots using a fictional show called “Honey, I'm Home.” The Family Viewing Hour was a policy established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1975. Under the policy, each television network had the responsibility to air "family-friendly" programming during the first hour of the prime time lineup (8 to 9 pm Eastern Time). “Van Dyke & Company” occupied the ‘Family Hour’ time slot.
“Honey, I'm Home” 8pm to 9pm ('Family Hour') – Dick comes home to find his wife waiting patiently on the sofa.
“Honey, I'm Home” 9pm to 10pm – Dick comes home to find his wife kissing another man.
“Honey, I'm Home” 10pm to 11pm – Dick comes home to find the same couple looking at a road map, but the 'honey' he's come home to is the man, not the woman!
He attempts to show the audience “Honey, I'm Home” after midnight, but quickly opens and shuts the door, horrified at what he's seen (and we don't).
Tumblr media
A network executive (John Wheeler) appoints Richard (Dick) to Vice President of Programming in order to get him to tell fading star Marion Lane (Lucy) that her show has been canceled. Lucy receives a big ovation from the studio audience, which indicates this may be the first segment shot, with the cold open pre-taped without a studio audience.
Marion seems to know what he's come for and quickly takes a liberal amount of tablets.
Richard: “Marion, what's that you're taking?” Marion: “Sleeping pills.” Richard: “Wouldn't you call that a kind of a heavy dose?” Marion: “I'd call it an overdose.”
Turns out they were just breath mints. Still fearing the worst, Marion momentarily straddles an open window. When he finally delivers the bad news, she slaps him hard across the face, sending him careening over the divan. The sketch has a surprise twist ending with Richard being Marion's husband!
Tumblr media
Dick is discovered chiseling a sculpture and telling the audience that he's always wanted Rudolf Nureyev as a guest. He finally got a call from the dancer to tell him that he will be appearing – on “The Gong Show.”  “The Gong Show” was a low-budget amateur talent show that had only premiered on TV a few months earlier. This set-up is by way of introducing what Dick calls “the most fabulous dancers around” - The Lockers. After they perform their main act, Dick joins in, even wearing one of their costumes.
Tumblr media
Dick and Lucy play Helen and Edgar, a couple celebrating their 40th anniversary. Edgar is 115 years old, and Helen is 75. She only married him thinking she would soon be a rich widow. Van Dyke's characterization of Edgar is reminiscent of when he played the elderly banker Mr. Dawes Sr. in Mary Poppins (1964). Helen tries everything she can think of to hasten her inheritance.
She cracks a champagne bottle on his head. Nothing.
She tries to guillotine him while blowing out the candles on their anniversary cake. It misses.
She gives him a big anniversary kiss with an electrified wire. He is energized by it.
She offers him some fresh air out on the balcony (which they don't have) and pushes his wheelchair headlong out the terrace doors. Helen thinks she's finally succeeded in offing him, but he comes rolling through the opposite door a few moments later, his wheelchair now a mash-up of a trash can and mobility device.
Helen finally slips Edgar a mickey that does the trick – but first he calls up the newspaper to place his own obituary. The sketch has a twist ending with the entrance of Helen's paramour (Barry Van Dyke), who may be trying to do the same thing to her!
Tumblr media
Dick and Lucy are having some banter as themselves when Andy Kaufman arrives with his tape player wanting to be on the show. Although Dick says that Andy should just go away, Lucy says that she's seen Andy on the show before, and that he always interrupts guests, and they've all been very good sports about it. Lucy says that she just doesn't happen to be one and swiftly exits. Dick says Andy has previously insulted Carl Reiner (S1;E4), Hal Linden (S1;E5), John Denver (S1;E3), and now Lucy. Dick exits to find a security guard.
Alone with the audience, Kaufman starts with an imitation of “Sanford and Son” saying (in his inimitable way, with clipped diction and seemingly incapable of imitating Redd Fox)
“Elizabeth. I am coming to join you.”
He then tackles 'the Fonzie' from “Happy Days”:
“Eh. Eh. Sit on it you stupid nerd.”
Again without a trace of intonation or nuance. Finally he does a sped up Elvis Presley imitation. [This song has been omitted from the DVD release, probably due to song royalty fees. It is apparent that it has been edited out because the sketch on video quickly fades out and Kaufman had not yet used the tape recorder he brought onstage at the start.]
Tumblr media
In another silent pantomimed sketch (the second of the show), Lucy and Dick play tourists taking photographs in a Tropical Forest.
Tumblr media
To get the perfect photo, Lucy and Dick virtually destroy the forest, breaking off twigs, pulling up flowers, and cutting down trees. Luckily, their picnic hamper comes equipped with a hacksaw and dynamite!
Tumblr media
In a final act of desecration, Lucy bulldozes the entire area clear, turning the lush setting...
Tumblr media
...into a parking lot!
Tumblr media
Dick plays a long-haired Maestro (in sneakers) but instead of an orchestra, he conducts dancers. When the dancers go from classical to modern, the Maestro nearly gives up trying to control them, but when the music turns to a Broadway sound, even he joins in.
Tumblr media
In the closing, Dick sings “You Make It So Easy” to Lucy. The two do some simple, yet funny, dance steps as well.
This Date in Lucy History – December 9

"Lucy and the Military Academy" (TLS S2;E10) – December 9, 1963

"Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50" (HL S1;E11) – December 9, 1968

Bollywood Celeb Investments In Startups This Year
This article is part of Inc42’s special year-end series — 2019 In Review — in which we will refresh your memory on the major developments in the Indian startup ecosystem from international collaborations to celebrity investments and their impact on various stakeholders — from entrepreneurs to investors. Find more stories from this series here.
The startup ecosystem has taken on a new dynamic in India as startups are entering everyday conversations. From receiving investments from large family houses and venture capitalists, startups have also learned to bring in glamour and entertainment. In addition to promoting ventures through ad campaigns, celebrities, who are working in the entertainment industry, across the world are now realising that the real proposition lies in investments and entrepreneurship.
While Hollywood celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, among others have been extending their Midas touch to startups around the world, Bollywood stars such as Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, among others have been fulfilling the glamour appetite of the Indian startup ecosystem.
Following the legacy of these veteran superstars, new-age Bollywood actors such as Ayushmann Khurrana, Deepika Padukone, and Arjun Kapoor became angel investors for some of the startups in 2019. Also, besides her big fat wedding, India’s desi girl Priyanka Chopra also made headlines in the startup ecosystem this year.
Here is the list of Bollywood celebrities who backed startups in 2019
Deepika Padukone
With a strategic partnership with Mumbai-based FMCG health food brand, Epigamia, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone forayed into the startup ecosystem. The investment by Padukone came as an extension of the Series C funding round of Epigamia, which was led Verlinvest, Danone Manifesto Ventures, and DSG Consumer Partners.
Founded in 2015 by Rohan Mirchandani, Uday Thakker, Ganesh Krishnamoorthy, and Rahul Jain, Epigamia started as a Greek yoghurt brand. In its four years of journey, the brand has added other healthy F&B products, such as artisanal curd, snack packs, Indian sweets, and smoothies, to its kitty.
Padukone’s second investment this year came from her family office, Ka Entreprises, for investing in Delhi-based Blu Smart. JITO Angel Network, Kalpavriksh Trust, Survam Partners, cofounder of Micromax Rajesh Agarwal, and the MD of Bajaj Capital Sanjiv Bajaj also participated in the $3 Mn angel funding round of Blu Smart.
Launched in January 2019, Blu Smart started as an electric cab-hailing platform. In June 2019, the Delhi-based company pivoted to offer subscription-based car rentals, ride-sharing on both electric cars and bikes, and shared EV charging infrastructure across Delhi NCR region.
In addition to becoming an angel investor, Padukone also started her entrepreneurial journey with women focussed fashion label All About You and an NGO, Live Life Foundation.
Akshay Kumar
Famous for his athletic lifestyle on and off the screen, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar’s investment journey followed his lifestyle patterns. Kumar, in June 2019, invested in Mumbai-based wearable tech startup, GOQii.
Founded in 2014 by Vishal Gondal, GOQii is a smart wearable device. It helps users to track their step count, sleep, and other physical activities. Moreover, GOQii’s smart ecosystem integrates real-time personalised coaching, a health ecommerce platform, scheduling health checkups, a health tracking feature, among other tools.
As part of this deal, Kumar also joined the company’s board as an investor and strategic advisor. Kumar is also hosting one of GOQii’s health education initiatives, India Health Quiz, on the mobile app. The actor will also conduct live coaching sessions on GOQii Play.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Sidelining from Bollywood, former Miss World and Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan started her journey as an angel investor with an investment in Bengaluru-based environmental intelligence startup Ambee. Rai along with her mother Vrinda KR invested INR 50 Lakh each in Ambee.
Founded by Akshay Joshi, Jaideep Singh and Madhusudan Anand in 2017, Ambee provides hyperlocal air quality data. The data is then made accessible to developers, consumers, health researchers and media companies. For tracking the air quality data, the platform uses proprietary data and analytics to help customers make informed decisions or take preventive measures in a situation of severe environmental distress.
Arjun Kapoor
With a focus to empower women, Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor invested in homemade food delivery company Foodcloud in May 2019. “My aim at investing in Foodcloud.in is to contribute towards a larger societal purpose of empowering the homemakers to contribute towards their family income,” he previously said.
Founded by Vedant Kanoi, Shamit Khemka, and Sanjhi Rajgarhia, the food delivery platform runs on the premise of home cooks delivering hygienic and home-cooked food to customers from their kitchens.
On bringing Kapoor onboard, Kanoi said that having a “socially conscious youth icon” like Kapoor’s support is a dream come true. “He has enjoyed the homemade food by our talented home chefs in Delhi and we’re excited to have his support to grow our initiative to new cities,” he said.
Priyanka Chopra
2019 has been arguably the most happening year for Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra. She became one of the Bollywood’s representatives to invest in international startups.
This year, Chopra made investments in the alternative college education startup Holberton School and dating app Bumble. Founded in 2015 by Julien Barbier, Rudy Rigot and Sylvain Kalache, San Francisco-based Holberton School is a project-based alternative to college for creating the next generation of software engineers.
Moreover, her other investment, Bumble, was founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd in ‎2011 as a “feminist dating app”. In a tweet, Chopra had said that she is honoured to join the two companies that are striving to expand gender diversity in the tech space and make a social impact for the greater good of society.
Sukhbir Singh
Singer Sukhbir Singh also made a noise in the startup ecosystem with his investment in Gurugram-based beverage startup, LQI. Singh participated in the $200K funding round of this startup.
Founded in 2016, LQI uses their proprietary technology for the production of its branded smoothies, milkshakes and fruit water frozen packs made with 100% raw fresh fruit with an increased shelf life of 2.5 months without the use of any colours, flavours, purees or preservatives. Shubham Khanna, Palak Kapoor and Kapil Kumar are the founders of this startup.
The singer didn’t stop by making a single investment and hence made his other investment in Amritsar-based electric bike rental company eBikeGo. Founded in 2017 by Dr Irfan Khan, eBikeGo currently operates in Delhi, Amritsar, Jaipur, Jalandhar, and Agra.
Ayushmann Khurrana
With an investment in Gurugram-based male grooming startup The Man Company (TMC), Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who is well-known for his unique characters on the screen, started his 2019’s entrepreneurial journey.
Founded in 2015 by Bhisham Bhateja, Hitesh Dhingra, Rohit Chawla and Parvesh Bareja, TMC has gained popularity for offering a complete head-to-toe range of men’s grooming products across various categories, including bath and body management, shaving and perfumes.
Rana Daggubati
Bollywood actor Rana Daggubati, famous for playing the role of villain in multilingual epic Bahubali series, also made buzz in the startup ecosystem by launching an accelerator platform Urban-i.
Launched in partnership with early-stage VC, Anthill Ventures, Urban-i is a market access programme focused on accelerating the business growth of consumer brand startups in India.
The platform will serve as a strategically designed platform to bring together capital, consumer brands and celebrities under one platform. Speaking to Inc42, Rana Daggubati, said that the platform will help startups in finding the right marketing approach for the selected startups.
Katrina Kaif
Though most of the Bollywood actors have started their entrepreneurial journey from clothing brands, Katrina Kaif, this year, has grown her passion in founding cosmetics brand Kay Beauty.
Launched in partnership with Mumbai-based beauty ecommerce platform Nykaa, Kay Beauty deals cosmetic products priced in the range of INR 249 to INR 799 across Nykaa’s offline and online platforms.
Kay Beauty is Nykaa’s second big celebrity collaboration after it has partnered with designer Masaba Gupta for an exclusive cosmetic range.
As of now, Kay Beauty is offering a wide range of eye and lip products and Kaif claims that so far the brand has received a positive response which will help it to foray in other beauty segments such as skincare, haircare, among others.
Amitabh Bachchan
Popularly known as Big B of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan was the recent Bollywood celebrity to ring the bells the startup ecosystem. The veteran actor has invested in $28 Mn funding round of Mumbai-based edtech startup Eduisfun. Other angel investors such as HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, Ogilvy Group chief creative officer Piyush Pandey and PwC partner – assurance Russel Parera also participated in this round.
Founded in 2014 by Praveen Tyagi and Jatin Solanki, Eduisfun develops gamified educational applications for school children belonging to CBSE and ICSE curriculums. Eduisfun’s flagship product STEPApp is an experiential learning platform that has been designed for students of private, central and tribal schools. Notably, the app even works on basic smartphones even with low data connectivity.

Everything That Upset the Internet This Week
What is the web-o-sphere up in arms about this week? A political television plot, a soap store window display and a former president trying to talk about #MeToo. Here’s everything you need to know:
Priyanka Chopra stars in a controversial episode of Quantico
THE STORY: A recent episode of Priyanka Chopra’s ABC television series, Quantico, features a plot about Indian nationalists trying to carry out a nuclear attack in Manhattan.
In the episode, which aired June 1, FBI agent Alex Parrish (Chopra) derails a terror threat days before a summit is planned to be held in NYC between India and Pakistan. In her investigation, Parrish discovers a religious Hindu symbol on one of the suspects, leading her to believe that the plot was devised by Indian nationalists with the intention of framing Pakistan.
THE REACTION:
Latest episode of Quantico is about Hindu men with Rudrakshas who are identified as Indian nationalists with knowledge of Indian government planning a Nuclear attack and blaming Pakistan and the Great priyanka chopra with FBI team stops it
Mainstreaming fake narrative
— யோகம்=சுழிமுனை (@duvijan) June 2, 2018
If you are offended by this scene request everyone one to record their protest & tweet with #BoycottSamsung, Mocking Hindutva has become fashion these days. pic.twitter.com/1rzE5FT2Ci
— Bhaiyyaji (@bhaiyyajispeaks) June 6, 2018
Hey @priyankachopra , the love, adulation and fame that you got from us Indians is a significant reason that today you are on world stage. And you, the “Desi Girl” ,played along calmly portraying Indians as terrorists in your show Quantico #Respect 🙏🏻
— The-Lying-Lama (@KyaUkhaadLega) June 5, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: ABC has since apologized for the episode and defended Chopra’s role, saying in a statement: “ABC Studios and the executive producers of Quantico would like to extend an apology to our audience who were offended by the most recent episode, The Blood of Romeo. The episode has stirred a lot of emotion, much of which is unfairly aimed at Priyanka Chopra, who didn’t create the show, nor does she write or direct it. She has no involvement in the casting of the show or the storylines depicted in the series.”
That’s all well and true, but I’d like to think Chopra—an A-List actress who frequently voices her political opinions—wouldn’t shy away from speaking up if she was uncomfortable with a storyline on series she stars. The show may be fictional, but Hollywood needs to tread carefully when stepping into complex political issues. (Not that this has stopped them before. Like, ever.)
Chopra has since offered her own apology:
I’m extremely saddened and sorry that some sentiments have been hurt by a recent episode of Quantico. That was not and would never be my intention. I sincerely apologise. I'm a proud Indian and that will never change.
— PRIYANKA (@priyankachopra) June 9, 2018
Lush launches their #SpyCops police campaign
THE STORY: Lush has teamed up with Police Spies Out of Lives, a U.K.-based organization that seeks to “end sexual and psychological abuse at the hands of undercover cops.” The month long campaign initiative features in-store signage, social media posts and a series of essays and videos on Lush UK’s site.
THE REACTION:
@LushLtd last time I checked you sold soap. With this latest campaign you’ve made yourself no better than the lowest tabloid papers. Won’t be shopping with you again. #flushlush
— Megan Alexander (@MeganAlexande12) June 2, 2018
@LushLtd am absolutely disgusted with your anti-police campaign. Our police officers save lives everyday and put themselves into situations to protect us all whilst you sit behind your big desks in an office somewhere. I will never be purchasing a Lush product again!#FlushLush
— Emma Johal (@EmmaJohal) June 1, 2018
There's already a public inquiry going on. Your campaign comes across as anti-police pure and simple, and should be withdrawn with an apology to serving and ex-cops #FlushLush
— John Hayes (@twpsaesneg) June 1, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE:  Lush has the right to involve themselves in whichever political initiatives they so please. This is a noble cause with good intentions—no matter how anti-police it comes across in a shop window. Perhaps this brashness was part of the plan? We’re all talking about this corrupt undercover cop campaign now, aren’t we?
That said, shoppers have every right to boycott a retailer whose views don’t align with their own. Just buy your soap somewhere else, guy! (Though, TBH, I’d be surprised if these Twitter trolls were buying organic face masks in the first place.)
Bill Clinton made a tone deaf #MeToo comment
THE STORY: While promoting his new book on the Today Show this week, former President Bill Clinton was asked to comment on his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Clinton, clearly flustered and unprepared to be questioned on the topic, responded: “We have a right to change the rules but we don’t have a right to change the facts,” he said, suggesting that Craig Melvin, the interview, didn’t actually know the facts of the Lewinsky case.
“Nobody believes that I got out of that for free. I left the White House 16 million dollars in debt,” Clinton said, as though financial repercussions are enough to satisfy the #MeToo reckoning. Clinton then begins defending himself: “This was litigated 20 years ago … Two-thirds of the American people sided with me; I had a sexual-harassment policy when I was governor in the ’80s; I had two women chiefs of staff when I was the governor; women were overrepresented in the attorneys general office in the ’70s.”
THE REACTION:
Bill Clinton. Here is the truth of it: a human life was altered & destroyed due to your selfishness. Because. You. Could. You not only wiped your semen on a young girl’s dress, you left a stain on society. You actually owe EVERYONE an apology, especially her. #MeToo pic.twitter.com/HWnsAmXjlR

Did Bill Clinton just #metoo Monica Lewinsky??? I (almost) have no words… Props for always being ahead of the curve as the first male to publicly somehow claim victim-hood from his actions against women. Balsy! Stupid… but balsy!!! https://t.co/Fvn7Cp3OmP
— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) June 4, 2018
.@BillClinton you're a damn disgusting disgrace to yourself and our country. #MeToo has taught you nothing! You were a predator who preyed on Monica and everyone knows it. It is spooky how you can have no remorse. You may have been POTUS but you are nothing but #shameless trash. https://t.co/VkzaPDIdid
— Portia A. Boulger (@PortiaABoulger) June 4, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: What’s most notable here is not Clinton’s response (though his whole victim card thing is gross), but the fact that he was so clearly shocked to be asked this question in the era of #MeToo. Lewinsky has been asked to comment on this relationship for two decades. Why is it that women are always being questioned on their behaviour—and to react to the behaviour of men—while men so rarely are called out for their own actions? This was a consenting relationship, but nonetheless is an example of professional and sexual power dynamics. Time is finally up, and Bill Clinton should have been prepared to talk about it. No matter how much debt he left the White House with, he is not the victim here.

Tumblr media
Robert F. Simon (Dr. Robert F. Simon) had a ten year run on Broadway (1942-52), in which he cut his teeth as actor and stage manager in everything from drama to musical comedy. He served as understudy to Lee J. Cobb as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. He was seen with Lucille Ball in the 1960 film The Facts of Life and in a 1963 episode of “The Greatest Show on Earth.”
Tumblr media
Parley Baer (Dr. Davis) previously played MGM’s Mr. Reilly in “Ricky Needs an Agent” (ILL S4;E29) and the furniture salesman Mr. Perry in “Lucy Gets Chummy with the Neighbors” (ILL S6;E18). This is the fourth of his five appearances on “The Lucy Show.” He also made two appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” He is perhaps best known for his recurring roles as Mayor Stoner on “The Andy Griffith Show” and Doc Appleby in “The Dukes of Hazzard.”
Tumblr media
Herb Vigran (Mr. Vigran) played Jule, Ricky Ricardo’s music agent on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” in addition to playing movie publicist Hal Sparks in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;23). He was seen in the Lucy-Desi film The Long, Long Trailer. He played the role of the baseball umpire (and eye doctor) in two previous episodes. He will be seen in just one more episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Jack Perkins (Terrible Tony, a Wrestler) was a stuntman and actor often cast for his ability to play drunk. He also has quite a few credits as a brawler and a bartender. This is his last episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Lucy claims to have seen Terrible Tony on television.
Tumblr media
Joel Marston (George Denton, Reporter for the Daily Gazette, above left) previously appeared as the supermarket clerk in “Lucy and Joan” (S4;E4). Marston was an internationally known dog breeder and proprietor of Starcrest Kennels in California. This is his final appearance on the series. He retired to Jacksonville, Florida, where he became a water aerobics instructor.
Eddie, the Daily Gazette photographer, is uncredited.

Robert S. Carson (Coach from the US Women's Olympic Team) played bank employee Mr. Potter in “Lucy Saves Milton Berle” (S4;E13) and “Lucy at Marineland” (S4;E1). He was a busy Canadian-born character actor making the fifth of his six appearances on the series. He also made five appearances on “Here’s Lucy.”
Natalie Masters (Woman from Whamo Breakfast Cereals, below) was seen as a saleswoman in “Lucy Bags a Bargain” (S4;E17). She played private eye “Candy Matson” on the radio series of the same name, which ran on NBC from 1949 to 1951. This is her last appearance on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
John Perri (Man from Full-of-Pep Vitamins, above center) was previously seen as a supermarket checker in “Lucy and Joan” (S4;E4). He was seen on Broadway in The Boy Friend (1954), the musical that introduced Julie Andrews. This is his final appearance on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Joyce Perry (Lab Secretary) makes the first of two appearances on the series. She was also a screen writer, receiving Emmy nominations for “Days of Our Lives” and winning a WGA (Writers Guild of America) Award in 1975 for “Search for Tomorrow.”
Tumblr media
Sid Gould (Sid, Computer Deliveryman) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all as background characters. He also did 40 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton.
Bennett Green (Computer Deliveryman #2) was Desi Arnaz’s stand-in during “I Love Lucy.” He does frequent background work on “The Lucy Show.”
Gould and Green have no lines as the Deliverymen. The two also played Deliverymen in “Lucy the Robot” (S4;E23) delivering the very large box containing Lucy as Major Fun Fun.
Alberto Morin (Bank Employee, uncredited) was born in Puerto Rico, and appeared in some of Hollywood’s most cherished films: Gone with the Wind (1939), Casablanca (1943), and Key Largo (1948). He was Carlos, one of Ricky’s “Cuban Pals” (ILL S1;E28) and the Robert DuBois in “The French Revue” (ILL S3;E7). His many background appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy” were all uncredited.
Hazel Pierce (Bank Employee, uncredited) was Lucille Ball’s camera and lighting stand-in throughout “I Love Lucy.” She made frequent on-camera appearances on the show. She was also an uncredited extra in the film Forever Darling (1956).
One other uncredited performer plays a bank employee who comes to Mr. Mooney's aid when the computer falls on his foot.

This is the final episode of season 4. Overall, season 4 rated #3 (a 27.7 share) in the Nielsen Ratings, the highest rating of the series thus far. The official DVDs of season 4 (with bonus material) were first released on April 26, 2011.
Tumblr media
This is the first of three episodes written by Elroy Schwartz. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1923 and was the brother of Sherwood Schwartz.  As such, he wrote several episodes of his brother's most popular series: “Gilligan's Island” and “The Brady Bunch.”
Tumblr media
Indeed, the premise of this episode was taken from a script of “Gilligan's Island”!  On the series, the castaways discover cans of vegetables that turn out to be radioactive. Gilligan eats the spinach (the same vegetable that gave Popeye strength) and develops super-human strength. It was aired six months after this episode of “The Lucy Show” - September 26, 1966 - also on CBS.
Tumblr media
The idea of a sudden onset of super-human strength (aka ‘Hysterical Strength’) was a familiar trope on television, but based on real-life anecdotes, mostly about parents lifting cars to rescue their children. Comic book artist Jack Kirby claims he saw a woman lift a car off her baby, which inspired him to create the Incredible Hulk, whose first appearance was in 1962.
Tumblr media
On the same evening this episode first aired (March 21, 1966), ABC broadcast the last new episode of  “Ben Casey” starring Vince Edwards.  Edwards did a cameo in “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (S4;E20, above). “Ben Casey” was filmed at Desilu Studios. The series finale was directed by Marc Daniels, who had directed 39 episodes of “I Love Lucy” from 1951-53.
Tumblr media
“The Lucy Show” was replaced for the summer (July-September 1966) by the fourth season of “Vacation Playhouse,” an anthology series of unsold TV comedy pilots. One was titled “Where There's Smokey” starring Gale Gordon as a Fire Chief. The pilot was completed in 1959 but not aired until August 1, 1966. When the pilot wasn't picked up, Gordon took the role of Mr. Heckendorn, the landlord on “Make Room for Daddy,” also filmed at Desilu. On August 29, 1966, “Vacation Playhouse” aired “The Two of Us” starring “Lucy Show” cast members Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane) and Barry Livingston (Arnold Mooney).
Tumblr media
When Mr. Mooney is getting a computer in his office, Lucy wants to ask it for dating tips. Mr. Mooney replies that it is a computer, not “Dear Abby.” Dear Abby is an advice column founded in 1956 by Pauline Phillips under the pen name ‘Abigail Van Buren’ and carried on today by her daughter, Jeanne Phillips. In 1965, CBS aired a radio version of Dear Abby’s column.  Lucille Ball also had a CBS radio series at the time.
Tumblr media
In this episode, Lucille Ball's hairstyle (probably a wig) has longer bangs and sides. This could be to cover the 'lift tape' (a sort of non-surgical face lift) that she wore on camera starting around this time.
Tumblr media
To decide where to put the computer in the office, Mr. Vigran feeds it a punch card. Punch cards were widely used through much of the 20th century in the data processing industry. The IBM 12-row / 80-column punched card format came to dominate the industry. Many early digital computers used punched cards as the primary medium for input of both computer programs and data. While punched cards are now obsolete as a storage medium, as of 2012, some voting machines still used punch cards to record votes.
Tumblr media
When Lucy lifts the computer the second time (just to prove she can), she gets a round of applause from the studio audience!  This happens again when she lifts the desk in her apartment.  Apparently the audience completely invests in the silly premise that Lucy has developed super human strength.
Tumblr media
When Lucy inadvertently crushes the can of tomato juice, she says in a childlike voice: “Boy, it sure doesn't look like tomato juice!”  In the 1960s “Wow, it sure doesn't taste like tomato juice!” was the advertising slogan for V8, a beverage manufactured by Campbells.
Tumblr media
V8 got its name from the fact that it originally contained the juice of eight different vegetables. It was first marketed in 1933 and is still sold today.
Tumblr media
Lucy swats a fly with a rolled up magazine and breaks a support column in half. This is the same column that muscular Frank Winslow broke in half when he was startled awake and went into a karate chop in “Lucy and the Sleeping Beauty” (S4;E9). The column in “Lucy, the Superwoman” is much narrower than the one seen above.
Tumblr media
When Lucy breaks the blood pressure machine causing a spurt of liquid into the air, Mr. Mooney shouts “Thar she blows!” "Thar she blows" is what the lookout on a whaling ship would shout when seeing a whale surface and blowing air out of its blowhole.
Tumblr media
When Lucy sneezes and blows the paperwork off the shelves, Mr. Mooney says “Now I know why they name hurricanes after women.”  In 1953, after a brief two-year period of using the Greek alphabet, meteorologists began using female names for hurricanes. In 1979, after much pressure from women's groups, male names were integrated into the naming. Hurricanes now alternate between male and female names.
Tumblr media
Lucy's twenty foot standing broad jump and hurdle stunts were accomplished by speeding up the film and putting Lucy on wires.
Tumblr media
It is likely that most of the lab scenes were shot without a studio audience due to the nature of the stunts involved. Also telling is that after Lucy does her first ‘flight’ the studio audience does not applaud, as they had for the much simpler stunts earlier in the show.
Tumblr media
Examples of Lucy's super human strength:
She lifts Mr. Mooney off his feet into the air when helping him up
She breaks the return carriage off her typewriter
She staples a document and breaks off the end of her desk
She closes a file cabinet drawer which smashes a hole in the wall
She rips the doorknob off Mr. Mooney's office door and then rips the door off as well
She closes her apartment door with a kick and splits it in two
She squeezes her grocery bag and collapses a can of tomato juice and cans of vegetables
She tears the door off her refrigerator
She squeezes 6oz of juice from a 3oz orange
She pulls the bottom off an ice cube tray
She swats a fly and breaks a pillar in half
She empties a full glass of cranberry juice in one sip
She saws through a table when cutting a slice of roast beef
She brings a professional wrestler to his feet with a handshake
She causes paperwork to fly off the shelves with a sneeze
She breaks a blood pressure machine
She kicks a tray into the air when her reflexes are tested
She nearly deafens the doctor when she talks into his stethoscope
She pitches an iron shot put ball through a glass window pane and a brick wall
She jumps twenty feet in her first attempt at the standing broad jump
She hurdles in the air over three men who are bending over
Tumblr media
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
Mary Jane says that the TV reporters are calling Lucy “Superman with prettier muscles.”  In 1957, Lucy Ricardo pretended to be the man of steel in “Lucy and Superman” (ILL S6;E13).
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball also used wires to ‘fly’ as the Witch in “Little Ricky’s School Pageant” (ILL S6;E10).
Tumblr media
And again in “Danny Thomas’s the Wonderful World of Burlesque” aired just a few months before this episode of “Here’s Lucy”.
Tumblr media
Lucy operated a similar massive gray computer that was located in the bank lobby at the start of “Lucy and Bob Crane” (S4;E22), although neither she nor Mr. Mooney mention it in this episode.
Fast Forward!
Tumblr media
In 1972, Harry Carter also gets a computer installed in the office to help with the workload in “Lucy’s Replacement” (HL S4;E19).
Tumblr media
Mrs. Carmichael wants to ask the new computer for dating tips like it is a mechanical Dear Abby. Two years later, Lucy Carter consulted a computer for dating tips in “Lucy the Matchmaker” (HL S1;E12).
Tumblr media
The desk that Lucy Carmichael lifts with ease will turn up again as set decoration for Harry Carter’s Home in “Lucy’s Wedding Party” (HL S3;E8) in 1970. Lucy Carter dusts it, but doesn’t lift it!
Blooper Alerts
Tumblr media
Keep Jiggling, Viggie! When the computer is first installed, Mr. Vigran has a bit of trouble getting the second dolly out from underneath the computer so it can fall on Mr. Mooney’s foot.  After a few seconds of jiggling, it comes free.
Tumblr media
Desk Work! When Lucy lifts the desk in her apartment, the track for raising it off the ground can be seen underneath, despite being painted the color of the wall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super-Strong Sweet Tooth! Lucy comes home from work holding a shopping bag and 5 pink bakery boxes. Why does a woman living alone need five boxes of baked goods?  The boxes were a familiar item on the show and the Desilu props department must have had quite a few in stock!  Also, if Lucy went shopping on her way home, why doesn’t she have any stories of the mayhem she must have caused in the stores to tell Mary Jane when she comes over?
Tumblr media
I’ve Got A Beef! When Lucy picks the roast beef up off the floor, we can see that the roast has been glued to the plate!
Tumblr media
At the lab, Dr. Davis asks Lucy if she’s ever had any accidents. She says that except for fender benders, she hasn’t. She must have forgotten that she suffered a blow to the head and got amnesia just two years earlier!

“Lucy, the Superwoman” rates 2 Paper Hearts out of 5
