Swipe Right For Murder by Derek Milman

Here are the basics of this novel - it’s about a seventeen-year-old boy, Aiden, who hooks up with an older gentleman in a hotel. When he wakes up his hook up is dead and Aiden is now on the run in a classic case of mistaken identity and thievery. But maybe not everything is as it seems?

I don’t think I can say that I LOVED this book. Did I hate it? No. Was it just ok? Yes. It’s definitely possible that I just didn’t appreciate a good thriller/adventure novel because I don’t read them an awful lot. Will people like this novel? Definitely. However, I just felt that the content was pretty “meh” and not all that awe inspiring.

My biggest complaint comes from the resolution of many of the conflicts. Most of the situations were resolved out of convenience and pure luck rather than any major effort of the protagonist - this set up bores me. We have a preppy main character with loads of money so that’s never an issue. He just happens to have survivalist knowledge because of a “survivalist uncle” having taught him stuff YEARS ago (which only comes up ⅔ of the way into the book).. He just happens to run into people that can save him from every situation. He just happens to know that one, random piece of information that allows him to connect all the dots. I was bored with the ease of it.

Beyond my issues with the story though, the writing was pretty good. Milman can write an action scene pretty darn well, so I wasn’t disappointed with those. However, I did want a bit more of the emotional past of Aiden (the protagonist). There is a LOT of information to work with, and I wanted it more flushed out, but that’s hard to do when people are trying to kill you. I’d be curious to hear what people think about the many references and accounts of a minor sleeping with adults. It bothered me and I think Milman does a good job of bringing some of those issues to light (it takes awhile and he does so,eventually, but not to the extent I was hoping).

I’m giving Swipe Right for Murder 2 out of 5 Awesome Austin Points. In the end, the action scene writing didn’t overpower my “meh” feelings about the plot. I want something with a little more effort on my protagonist’s part rather than ease and luck.

Full disclosure, I am not a fan of this book, which is incredibly disappointing as it was presented as a Tinder for murder kind of plot and that is not what was delivered. Following Aidan as he gets mixed up in a terrorist plot that involves the FBI, this book is utterly preposterous. Starting with an overnight trip in New York City that leads to murder and Aidan being hunted by two groups of people, this book goes from bad to worse. While watching Aidan struggle to make even the basic common sense choices, we learn that the terrorist group is the Swans, an LGBTIA+ group that at the core of what they want is not wrong, but its methods of going about things are. We watch as Aidan is recruited by the FBI to go undercover in the group. The internet’s cracking up over this very telling pic of Doug Jones’ son.

On Wednesday, January 3, 2017, Doug Jones was sworn into the U.S. Senate.

Jones, whose special election victory over republican Roy Moore flipped Alabama politics on its head, was joined by his wife Louise, and sons Carson and Christopher for the occasion.

The ceremony was relatively uneventful, all things considered. But one photo from the day began to ... catch people's attention.

The image captured Jones' son Carson appearing to give some some serious side-eye to Vice President Mike Pence during his father's swearing-in ceremony.

Carson is openly gay. Pence openly hates gay people.

And that look truly is worth a thousand words.

No one confirmed Carson was staring maliciously at Pence, of course. In all likelihood, Carson's expression was nothing but fateful timing caught in the flash of the camera.

But of course, that didn't stop the internet from noticing.

In the blink of a (side-)eye, the photo blew up social media in spectacular fashion.

Queer men, especially, had a field day.

YouTuber and LGBTQ activist Tyler Oakley relished in Carson's glare: "Don't fuck with us, [Pence]."

Carson glaring at the V.P. "is all of us," one user wrote.

Other users noted that — with or without the side-eye — it was great seeing the vice president swearing in a political opponent while the new senator's gay son stood proudly nearby.

The pic felt like "my new cozy blankie," said Alex Blagg.

Carson's viral photo is just the latest incident of internet mockery aimed at Pence from the LGBTQ community.

Just last week, a neighbor of Pence's Colorado vacation home hung a "Make America Gay Again" rainbow flag on a stone pillar near the vice president's driveway. The story quickly blew up on both LGBTQ and mainstream media.

Last January, a "queer dance party" erupted outside the then-vice president elect's Washington, D.C. home. The event was organized by Werk For Peace, a "grassroots movement using dance to promote peace," BuzzFeed reported.

"This is our dance party!" supporters yelled in the street. "Daddy Pence, come dance!"

The dance parties, rainbow flags, and side-eyes are all in good fun, of course — but LGBTQ people also understand that Pence's record on queer rights is no joke.

In the past, the vice president has supported conversion therapy — which promotes the lie that LGBTQ sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression — particularly in children — can and should be changed through "therapy." Many consider it a form of child abuse that can ruin and even end lives.

Pence is fervently anti-marriage equality and opposed the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." He allowed an HIV outbreak to flourish in rural Indiana as governor and once voted against measures to protect LGBTQ people from employment discrimination. Pence also claimed government "has no business" guaranteeing that transgender students have the right to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender.

Now, as the second-most politically powerful person in the U.S., his abhorrent record on equal rights has alarmed LGBTQ advocates across the country. For queer people, his vision for the future of America is certainly worth resisting.

But sometimes, resisting can entail smaller actions, like dance parties, clever "MAGA" slogans, and — yes — some serious side-eye.
