You were chasing your answers. You didn’t expect to see your dad, let alone stick, and your mother.
her eyes. The moment your eyes locked with hers you knew. You knew because they were yours. You didn’t have your dad’s eyes, so you always assumed you got them from your mother, who she might be. Not a hint of doubt appeared. This was absolutely her. But what the hell was she doing here?
In all the chaos around you and confusion present in your mind, you didn’t see one of the men coming towards you and striking you across the chest. In a single instant, you were on the ground, grasping at your side trying to relive a single ounce of pain, but ultimately failing. Your mind started to go fuzzy. The familiar feeling of your father scooping you into his arms is the one clear thing you can remember. That and the blank stare your mother gave you while being carried away.
“C’mon. Let’s give them space.”
Elektra didn’t move. She couldn’t. A strange feeling came over her, a sense of protection. A daughter had always seemed useless to Elektra, Perhaps that’s why she left. Even now, while her daughter is crying in agonizing pain from the battle she just fought, I feeling of love rushed over her. She admired you. She could tell you were strong. Maybe not physically but your strengths lay in other places. She saw herself in you. You are just like her.
“Ellie.” She pulled out of her trance. “Let’s go.”
She nodded and tried to pull herself together while walking out of the room, giving one more glance towards the pair in the room.
Your father, with your blood on his hands and full of sweat, grabed your hand and continued reciting prayers. 3 Hail Marys, and 1 Our Father over and over and over again. The same prayers he was always given after confession to repent for his sins. Because that’s all he could feel…guilt. He is your father. The person who is supposed to love, care, help, support, soothe, and uplift his daughter…but he failed. Instead of saving her, he almost got her killed. And who knows, maybe you wouldn’t even make it to sunrise. Still, he hoped and prayed that he would.
The next morning was very melancholy. Stick was in the kitchen making some sort of breakfast for everyone (even though no one had an apatite at the moment) Elektra was sitting on the couch staring outside at the bright billboards, and your father was sitting in a chair next to his bed, tuning in on your heartbeat every once and awhile. He heard a knock on the door. It was Stick.
“Ah, there you are Matty. It’s time to eat.”
“I’m good, thanks.”
Stick let out a sigh and just brought a plate to him. “A man’s gotta eat.”
Matt disregarded his comment and the food in front of him, “Stick…will she make it?”
He stood next to Matt, tuning in to hear her breathing for a moment as well, “Well, she isn’t the strongest.” Matt swallowed and looked down. Stick continued, “But if she’s anything like her parents, she’s stubborn as hell.” He started walking away before he added, “Especially her father.”
Elektra looked toward the man in front of her. The man she once knew and wanted more from. The father of her child.
“Matthew-”
“I think you should leave.”
Confusion fell on her face. “W-why?”
“My daughter has just endured hell. If she even wakes up, the last thing I want her to see is the mother who she thought was dead but in reality, left her because she’s too lazy and incapable of loving anything but herself!” Anger fell off his tongue. Elektra didn’t flinch. She showed no sign of scaredness, but she knew he was right. “I just want to talk to her, Matthew. Let me have a conversation with her. Five minutes, and I’ll leave.” Matt sighed. “Huh, like how you left her before?” He pushed. “Please. I don’t want to hurt her, I swear.” He let out another sigh and then continued, “She gets to decide. If she says no, you leave immediately, no questions asked. If she agrees, you get five minutes.” Elektra swallowed, “Deal.”
Another hour passed by. Stick finally convinced matt to take a shower and change, knowing you wouldn’t wake up for a little while longer. Stick was doing some kind of meditation on the floor, while your mother paced back in forth between the chair and sofa trying to think of what exactly she want’s to say to you. Matt exited the bathroom and into his room. Trying to close the sliding door quietly but ultimately failing. The slam woke you up.
“Daddy?”
“Hey, hey, hey. Calm down. It’s just me. I got you.”
You continued to squirm and let out little yelps. “It hurts…a lot.”
“I know my love, but you gotta stay strong for me. Alright?
You nodded.
He kissed the back of your hand then continued, “Good girl.”
The door opened and Stick handed you some medicine to take. Elektra just stood by the door, staring at you. As you sat up to take the meds with some water, your eyes caught hers. All the emotions (but mostly questions) came hurdling back into your brain. ‘So it wasn’t a dream’, you thought to yourself. Your dad turned to Elektra, sensing her in the room. “Give me a moment.” She walked out at his request, wanting to stay on his good side. You lay back down slightly.
“Y/N, listen. I-”
“Is that her?”
“What do your m-”
“Is it?” you asked
“Yes.”
You looked at your father with sad eyes. “You lied to me?” Your voice cracked. All your life, your mother has always been a question to you. A question your father didn’t want to answer. He knew it was cruel to keep the two of you away from each other, every child should get to know a parent. When he became a father, he promised to give you the life he never had, no matter the cost. A mother, however, was not a part of the deal. To be fair, Elektra wasn’t necessarily keen on the idea of a child.
There was no doubt that you were unexpected, but still, your mother was ‘going to try’ to become a good mother and co-parent with Matt, but the truth is as soon as you were born she wanted nothing to do with you. She said she never wanted to see you again and told Matt to never contact her again. Your father, on the other hand, couldn’t believe the amount of love he had for this child. The whole labor was an emotional rollercoaster. But all he could focus on was the beautiful little girl in his arms. His little girl.
Elektra was dangerous, and the last thing he wanted was for his baby girl to be in any sort of danger. So he lied. He knew his ex would never come back (or so he thought) and believed the both of them were better off without her. No matter if it was the right decision or not, it still hurts to know your father lied to you.
“I’m so sorry my love. I promise I will explain everything to you. Everything you want to hear- any question, thought, whatever it is, I will tell you. I promise.”
She latched onto him and cried. He did the same. After a moment of quiet, he continued. “She would like to talk to you.” You broke away from the hug. “What?”
“You can speak with her, only if you want, but I’m only giviI’mher 5 minutes, for now at least. You pondered for a moment, but it didn’t take long to make up your mind. “I don’t want to see her. Ever.” Matt nodded. “Done.” You smiled a little and hugged him
Typical Elektra didn’t keep her promise like normal. You slowly ventured out of your father’s room, trying to regain the ability to walk and aching at the pain in your side. “I’m her mother! I deserve at least one convorsa-” Her eyes went to you. “Y/N…I um…My name is Elektra-”
“Get out.” you said sharply.
“Y/N, just give me a chance-” Your voice rose. “You had your chance years ago. You say you're my mother, but your just the opposite. You are not my mother. I don’t have a mother.”
“Y/N. I think you should-”
“I have a father, who does a better job than anyone ever could, and a crazy uncle who cares for me and treats me like his own! And an aunt who puts up with all my bullshit and never gives on on me! That’s the family I have, and trust me when I say that you will never be a part of that.”
She walked out, not saying a final word. What could she possibly say? Matt closed the door and hugged his daughter tight, whispering sweet nothings into her ear to try and provide some kind of comfort. She pulled away and looked at him. “I love you.” He sighed for what felt like a millionth time. “I love you more than you know.” Out of everything that has happened in the last 12 hours, let alone the secrets kept for the last 15 years, all he could think about at this moment was, “How did I get so lucky?”
