This disastrous COP28 must be the end of vague political promises. The people of Earth are on to the lies.

The United Nations climate summit, hijacked by the fossil fuel cartel, has gifted a blank check to rich countries and Big Oil to kill one billion people and force billions more to flee their homes by 2100. The so-called ‘historic’ outcome of COP28 fails to deliver the most basic and necessary measures which would have prevented societal and ‘earth systems’ collapse, as outlined by the IPCC: eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and halt all new gas and oil projects.

Instead, the new resolution includes numerous loopholes which will allow polluters to greenwash emissions through fictional carbon capture, meaningless carbon credits, and the re-classification of methane (“natural gas”) as a transition fuel. But to remain under 2°C of warming, we cannot afford to burn the fossil fuels we already have in reserve, let alone drill for more.

COP28 has taken a few tentative steps in the right direction, but only thanks to the blood and sweat of many people on the frontline of our climate crisis. The summit’s overall trend to support “business as usual” will result in further delays in meaningful climate action and condemn us to miss “the brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all.”

Wealthy countries have once again manipulated the climate summit in order to advance their ecocidal colonialism. Rich nations have been pillaging the natural resources of poorer ones for centuries and have used their fuels to emit far more than their share of CO2. They bear the lion’s share of responsibility to decarbonize first and fastest and provide much-needed funding to poorer nations, which are already heavily impacted by the escalating climate crisis. Instead, rich countries are racing in the opposite direction: the US, Canada, and just three other countries are responsible for more than half of planned oil and gas expansion.

UN governance failure is also to blame here, however, and urgently needs addressing. Even if COP had succeeded in a commitment to phase out fossil fuels, it could not be implemented without a binding treaty and enforcement mechanisms. Additionally, COP must demand reporting of any conflicts of interest and ban fossil fuel executives and lobbyists from tainting any more climate summits.

The Loss & Damage Fund could be an important first step, but without proper financing, it is condemned to fail. Loss and damage already costs more than $400 billion annually, but COP28 has only pledged $429 million in initial funding—a mere 0.1% of what is needed just for this year. By contrast, governments are using $7 trillion of our money every year to subsidize fossil fuels (despite the 1 in 5 deaths—12 million people annually—caused by air pollution alone) while the oil industry rakes in obscene profits.

That said, even a fully-financed Loss and Damage Fund can never fix a dysfunctional economic system which is fundamentally flawed, is based on endless growth, overconsumption, and extractivism, and is guaranteed to accelerate the global crisis. Studies have demonstrated that greenhouse gas emissions are firmly linked to resource exploitation and GDP growth. We have no choice but to create an economic system which aligns with the goals of a fair and equal transition, because the current one has failed both humans and all other 10 million life forms on this planet. Implementing a low-carbon economy is cheaper than sustaining the catastrophic costs of climate change, but the need to maintain and grow profit is preventing any progress. Profit will never fix what profit has created.

1.5°C is dead, and 2°C will be dead by 2050, if not earlier, if we continue down this path. 2023 was the hottest year on record; we passed 2.0°C for the first time in history, and 2024 is projected to be even hotter. Human behaviors inflict massive planetary stress beyond the burning of fossil fuels. “20 of the 35 planetary vital signs are now showing record extremes.”

We cannot entrust the fight for all life to the very politicians, companies, and markets that forced us into this existential crisis in the first place and who are right now brutally marching us off the cliff. This disastrous COP28 marks the end of vague political promises. The people of Earth are on to the lies. It is time to listen to the scientists, hundreds of whom have been driven out of their labs and into the streets to engage in civil disobedience: if we want to avoid condemning both this generation and all that follow to the worst outcomes of the climate crisis, we must all rise together in order to keep fossil fuels in the ground. The time is now.

Death Race 2000 (1975)

Along with Rollerball, Death Race 2000 is the other formative film of the Rollerwave aesthetic. It and Rollerball are really two sides of the same coin, and they share a lot in common- both being set in the 21st century, both being released the same year, and both dealing with an extremely dangerous sport that is used by an authoritarian government to placate the masses during a period of civic unrest. 

The key difference with Death Race 2000 is in presentation. I love this movie, it’s gaudy and self-aware, sometimes to the point of farce. Whereas Rollerball is bleak and heavy-handed, Death Race 2000, directed by cult cinema king Roger Corman, revels in the absurdity of its concept- a national cross-country race, held annually, where there are virtually no rules and points are awarded to whoever can mow down the most civilians during their journey from the East Coast to the West Coast.

With the iconic tagline “In the year 2000, hit and run driving is no longer a felony. It’s the national sport!” Death Race 2000 does not concern itself with the logistics of the hypothetical world it presents- why any society would promote such a ludicrous pastime, how hit-and-run has been accepted as a way of life, or why anyone would choose to walk out in the open during the day of the publicly announced event rather than just staying home. Unlike rollerball, which is theoretically a sport which can be played without any of its participants dying, the titular Death Race here is a plothole-laden carnival of madness, of freakish exhilaration and bloodsport. 

Like Rollerball, Death Race 2000 contains many scenes wherein the aesthetic of Rollerwave is on full display- particularly in the character of Junior Bruce, the manic wild-eyed TV announcer who has been adopted canonically as a sort of mascot for Rollerwave as a whole. His fashion choices are excessive to say the least, consisting of tinted aviator sunglasses, a tan jacket, leather safari boots, and a blazing orange kerchief. 

The film follows Frankenstein (David Carradine), a well-known and respected driver of malleable identity with plans to overthrow the system and end the spectacle, using his reputation as a weapon against the state that crafted his image in much the same way Jonathan from Rollerball does. Along the way, he and his navigator, Annie, experience a turbulent and poignant romantic subplot. The gender dynamics between the drivers and their navigators are a central theme of the film, as well as the societal mores and expectations of the year 2000, which appear entirely foreign to the people of 1975. 

The film is also notable for one of the earliest roles of Sylvester Stallone, here playing Machine Gun Joe Viterbo, a full year prior to his breakthrough as Rocky Balboa. Machine Gun Joe is a formidable secondary antagonist to Carradine’s Frankenstein- ruthless, power-hungry, and brutish. He appears seldom, but during his appearances leaves an impression on the viewer. 

The film’s cult status means that it is in fact part of a much larger franchise, consisting of the original 1975 film, the “Death Race” trilogy directed by video game schlock pioneer Paul W.S. Anderson and Roel Reine, and the much more faithful sequel with Roger Corman returning to the helm as director, Death Race 2050. Of all these films, however, only Death Race 2000 truly captures the Rollerwave aesthetic in all its glory. 

I’ll be honest here and say that Death Race 2000 is not a film for everyone. Same may find it excessively cartoonish, some may find Carradine boring while others may find the film’s gratuitous spectacle too abrasive. For those who have seen it, however, and those in the Rollerwave community, it remains a fascinating vision into a world that could have been.

The Future World and Humanity

In the way the world is progressing in the fields of science and technology, what will be the implications for humanity and this planet? Let's try to understand this. Firstly, we need to assess the changes happening on this planet. In the next hundred years, there will be a significant increase in the average temperature of the Earth and a rise in sea levels, in addition to changes in weather patterns. Coping with this changing environment will require dealing with severe shortages of human and animal deaths and food. The elimination of insects will affect all creatures, ultimately impacting human life, and the chain of human deaths will accelerate after a century.

According to research estimates, by 2050, the rising sea levels will cause many cities and islands near the sea to disappear from the Earth. The advent of robotic machines will result in the elimination of 50% of jobs, with every task being performed in a smart and autonomous manner.

Both robotics and technology will transform the nature of all industries, and there will be further advancements in drone flights, whether for civilian or military use, making human life easier. Human society will undergo a transformed society. Many languages spoken on Earth will become extinct and obsolete. Due to the advancement of technology, there will be an impact on human evolution, leading to changes in its structure. According to scientists' estimates, human race extinction will occur within a thousand years.

By 2025, according to a research estimate, there will be a 1.5% increase in the Earth's temperature compared to the pre-industrial era, and this will continue to rise unless addressed. The environment of 2050 will be very different from today's environment, with changes in education, income sources, and human living conditions. Due to scientific progress, means of income in the 21st century will be faster and more effective. Human means of income will be through rockets, providing better facilities for humans in space and becoming their new habitat. The dreams of the present era will become a reality in the next century.

Due to the advancement of scientific progress in medicine, there will be an impact on human health and lifespan, and diseases like cancer will become treatable. Patients will be able to receive treatment from doctors without leaving their homes, thanks to technology. The speed of computers will be many times faster than today's computers. With the advent of 3D printing technology, anything can be easily manufactured and molded according to its construction. Interactive holographic television will adorn homes by 2050, which can be activated with the press of a button on mobile phones, allowing for viewing 3D and virtual films.

In the current era, some jobs provide convenience with all information displayed in front of the driver's screen. In this era, students will no longer be seen carrying large bags for education; instead, they will carry tablets and laptops. All the syllabi of students will be available on them, freeing them from carrying heavy books. Touchscreens will replace blackboards, allowing teachers to create shapes easily. Future humans will strive to improve their defensive, mental, and physical abilities through technology, which will reduce the use of natural factors.

There are some positive developments in this human advancement, including the creation of new antibiotics and vaccines, and the establishment of democratic societies. However, when looked at negatively, a new era of nuclear weapons and fascism is also emerging. Environmental and societal changes indicate a fear of overcrowding by 2050, according to an estimate by the World Bank. Human evolution will continue as long as they continue to advance their race and protect it. Human evolution is affecting the current environment in three ways:

Increase in population rate,

Environmental changes, including smoke from burning petroleum products obtained from land and seas, and

Melting glaciers.

This is leading to deforestation, poor air quality, and the scarcity of clean drinking water. Human progress is showing its impact on the environment, such as changes in land construction, plant species, and the carbon cycle. Due to the increasing population and construction of buildings, there will be a shortage of agricultural land, affecting food shortages. Forests will start disappearing from the page of existence. According to scientists, this environmental change will lead to changes in human evolution and its structure.

Visible changes in humans, such as dense hair, large heads, and pronounced wrinkles, will occur. According to scientists' estimates, human race survival is visible only in such a vital environment for a thousand years. Otherwise, this race will be extinct even before that. Due to the earth's proximity to the solar orbit, the temperature will increase to an unbearable level. Significant changes are expected in the backs and necks of humans, and changes in the structure of their hands and eye sockets will also be visible.

And their structure will have undergone significant changes compared to the current human structure. There will be changes in the agricultural sector, and vertical farming will increase due to the scarcity of land. Tall buildings will be used for agriculture, and vertical farms and genetically modified crops and meats will be common. New fields of employment have already been introduced, such as space tourism companies, computer and genetic engineering fields, and experts in vertical agriculture. In addition, many other new fields of employment will emerge, while old fields will become obsolete. The world will be based on artificial intelligence, mobile cameras, and autonomous structures.

In the future, the focus of scientists' research will be on the moon and Mars. The world in which we live will undergo a transformed society after a century. Seasonal and temperature fluctuations will be more frequent and longer, leading to food shortages and droughts. Migration from one place to another will be faster, and the incidence of infectious diseases will increase. Environmental changes will occur rapidly. No scientist can predict the next century accurately; all these are speculations and scientific estimates.

Conny Van Dyke was born September 28, 1945, in Nassawadox, Virginia, to Benjamin and Charlotte Elizabeth Van Dyke. Van Dyke began as a songwriter and recording artist for Wheelsville Records in Detroit, Michigan. In 1960, Van Dyke entered and won the “Miss Teen USA” contest (sponsored by Teen magazine and unrelated to the current Miss Teen USA pageant). She was signed to Motown Records in 1961, making her one of the first white recording artists for the label. Her only Motown release appeared in early 1963 and featured the song “It Hurt Me Too” (previously issued by Marvin Gaye) b/w “Oh Freddy” written by Smokey Robinson.

In 1962. Conny’s parents introduced Conny to Sammy Kaplan, and Sammy produced “I Know a Place.” As Sammy remembers, he knew she was destined to head to Hollywood to star in film and TV. She was already on a fast track to fame.

She was cast in Hell’s Angels ’69 with Tom Stern, Jeremy Slate, and several Hells Angels motorcycle club members. Her only sibling, Benjamin Van Dyke III, was killed in an auto accident near Salinas, CA, in 1969. Shortly after Hell’s Angels ’69, she married Robert Page and gave birth to her only son, Bronson Page. She continued to pursue recording and released a self-titled album in 1972.

She co-starred in W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings in 1975 with Burt Reynolds. Another album, “Conny Van Dyke Sings For You,” followed the film. In 1975, she co-starred in Framed with Joe Don Baker.

Folake Olowofoyeku (born October 26, 1983) is a Nigerian actress and musician. She currently stars in Bob Hearts Abishola.
