Hey, I think the new Power Girl and Wonder Woman variant covers might be AI

look, I’m no artist, but I think I’m pretty decent at spotting AI “art” when I come across it. There’s usually just this weird look about it that causes me to raise a metaphorical eyebrow, and if I look closer, I can find the inconsistencies in it a real artist wouldn’t make.

Both of these variants were made by Daxiong, I’m not familiar with their artwork and tried looking them up and their usual style is very different than what they had this time around.

Let’s start with the Power Girl cover:

At first glance it looks fine, but if you look closer you can spot the inconsistencies

There are these weird ribbons? or hair? just popping up from her head and belt that kind of connect but are just confusing to look at

The belt itself is very inconsistent

The hair ends differently in places compared to the rest of it

There are lines in weird places

And for the Wonder Woman cover, I admit, I don’t think I spotted as many, but there are still areas where it looks weird

The lines on her “W” belt are inconsistent

The lines on her armband/gauntlet thing are all over the place with no coherence

And the symbols on her shield don’t really look like anything and they just fade away

Like I said, I’m no artist, but this looks like the work of AI to me.

I hope I’m wrong, I don’t want to see people using AI “art” at all, let alone professionals in the comics industry. But if this is actually AI, I don’t think people should buy these covers if the “artist” didn’t even think it was worth their time to actually put effort in and make them.

hey there! I love your posts and edits, but I kind of wanted to warn you that the new Wonder Woman variant by Daxiong seems to be AI “art”. There’s a lot of weird inconsistencies on it (and the Power Girl variant) that a real artist wouldn’t make

he may have used AI art to finish out the cover but I don't think he used it to completely create the artwork itself but I hope he uploads the process of making his covers because using AI as a professional artist is egregious

Last month we got to see the up coming covers for June and they included 3 from artist Daxiong that were immediately... suspicious.

Probably the most egregious aspect is how the hair runs into each other. When I first saw this cover, I sent a message to my friend saying "This one feels very AI generated both in the anime realism style and the way everything is rendered".

But then I looked deeper on the artists socials and they've been posting art in this style for years. The only difference is that it's all traditional, not digital like the submitted covers. The boy disgital art they have is from 2021, and at that point the rendering skill is not on par with where it's supposedly at now. But even in recent months, they posted art with that weird organic hair & texture aspect.

A couple hours after the solicitations were released (the covers were shown to the public), and right while I was talking to my friend about it, they posted the lineart of the drawings.

Folks, remember Daxiong’s DC variants he with with AI? DC quietly confirmed he did use AI, they cancelled the variants, and replaced them with cover art made by actual artists

I found a few small sources confirming this, along with the new covers created by actual artists

I’m glad DC cancelled the original covers. It’s not worth buying art of any kind if no one spent the time to actually make them. These new variants being made by actual artists are a million times better for that reason alone, that real human artists put their time into making them, and not AI stealing from what has already been created.
