the exciting part about the outline (and the part that im most looking forward to) is pretty much the fact that since there's going to be more chapters compared to the other draft, that means there's more time for character moments between the cast! im also gonna be a little more self indulgent dfhdfhjfd

Overall opinion
I love this gal! I love this gal! They really popped off with her in so many respects shdjdjd. I was talking to a friend about this earlier but her visual design as Batgirl is so cool, and to be honest the fact that it denies a clear face to perceive and leans so far into the blackness of it all makes her look way scarier than Bruce most of the time. As far as being an actual character, she’s got so many great things going on. Her run of Batgirl books was so good because it really hammered home real themes of abuse in a really vivid way, making her struggle with the ideas of violence and revenge and what it means to heal from all of that. She represents a really tough intersection of a hero who carries the baggage of serious trauma but whose trauma also makes her devoted to being against killing, and it’s something she has to struggle with. The idea that she “isn’t good enough” which was drilled into her from her own abuse and is carried over in the way she’s seen at times from her mentors in Batman and Oracle, wanting to live up to the image of the bat while struggling to fit herself into the idea of what it means to be that kind of hero. It’s all really good and really compelling.
Unfortunately Cass has the central problem of being a comic book character which means she tends to be written more or less gracefully depending on the writer. There’s an infamous incident of her being turned into a villain on a totally faulty premise because the author for that book hadn’t even read anything with her in it before and just thought it would be a cool twist. There’s also the fact that she, alongside Steph, were entirely erased from the continuity for the New 52 and had to eventually be brought back in a somewhat less graceful way than before. I like Rebirth Cass, but I’m still frustrated that they did away with her to begin with, creating another version of the character which would further complicate things.
One of the most standout elements for Cass to me is that struggling kindness. She’s a deeply, genuinely good person and her goodness shines through even the abuse and pain she’s suffered and her difficulty with social interactions and with communication. Despite fighting being all she knows she’s at her core a good person, wants to be good and to do good and to be kind. One of the central themes of her solo series was that she might not forgive her abusers, might hate them, but that she wants to be kind in spite of that, to be and to do better, and to keep moving forward and not to let them ruin her life any further. Her strong code against killing is one example of this, but it’s also just her attitude towards forgiveness and healing. She accepts Bruce as a father figure despite his flaws and red flags and returns to Babs despite some stuff she said that others could consider unforgivable. At her core she wants to just keep getting better and she’ll always take the path that does that the most, and it’s a really really powerful story to hear regarding abuse victims.
Gender / sexuality
Hahaha (*cracks my knuckles*). Now’s the time when I get to have my fun. Like all characters I enjoy I have waved my wand and casted the magic of trans ur gender and homo ur sexuality. I consider her a transfem character and like all my transfem HCs this is mostly cuz I want her to be trans but I found a pretty good after the fact justification for it which is that I think it further emphasizes the themes of rejecting your assigned role and choosing to be someone you want to be. Cass was assigned killer at birth and transitioned to a non-killer so she can also transition to a girl, right? Also she’s sapphic and kisses girls cuz I just think she should, she deserves it.
Favorite canon moment
Honestly, there are a lot of these depending on the continuity- the WFA 2-parter “All-Seeing” is fantastic for example- but from her solo series I wanna go with her fight against Bruce. This happens because after working together Bruce has begun to exhibit some red flags in his behavior, beginning to act in some ways like Cass’ biological father and he’s as aware of that as she is and is struggling with the need to be better for her and to be different. One of those themes of fatherhood that always gets me. But as that comes to a head, Bruce essentially lets himself be controlled by a villain to set up a fight between himself and Cass with neither holding back, both fighting each other earnestly, because both of them are very autistic and communicate better through their actions and through fighting than they ever could with words. It’s pretty heart-warming despite the premise, and it ends on a really touching note of him earnestly apologizing and promising to become a better father to her essentially, and her asserting that she isn’t loyal to him but to the idea of the bat itself.
Favorite fan work moment
I haven’t read any fan works with Cass in them yet sadly mostly because I think fanfic is daunting in general because of how hard it is to find good stuff and I think that feeling would only be massively amplified by the inherent continuity confusion and wildness of comic books. I’ll take suggestions tho dhdjfn.
Favorite line
I think I have to go with “I see too much, I can’t help it” from the aforementioned WFA 2-parter cuz that blew me away completely.
Characters I love seeing them interact with
Any of the Batfamily I think, but in particular her best friendship with Steph is extremely fun to see and super cute, her father-daughter dynamic with Bruce is great, I think she and Jason have a lot in common and would get along, and her looking up to Babs as a role model is a lot of fun too. As far as non-Batman characters I think she and Jaime Reyes (the Blue Beetle) should hang out.
Last thing before bed
So it’s basically confirmed that all the Batfam is nocturnal so she presumably sleeps during the day which is great. I think both because of her natural attitude and the fact that it’s bright outside when she goes to sleep she probably has a hard time getting to bed and dealing with like, everything calming down to that point, she’s probably pretty energetic up until then, so I think she likes it if she can get one of her siblings or Bruce or Alfred to just talk to her for a bit, to help her wind down and get comfortable. This is also why I think she doesn’t use her own room that much and has a habit of falling asleep in random places around the manor.
Sleeping habits
I think she absolutely tosses and turns something fierce and is prone to nightmares. Luckily she’s got the resources to reach out to if they’re really traumatic and a big house with lots of snacks to swipe if she wakes up. I think she probably eventually gets pretty used to waking up and going back to sleep so her schedule is usually more like a lot of naps throughout the day. Which is also why she sleeps in tons of different weird locations. So you can never find Cass around the house, but you can be somewhat sure of when she’s asleep. She just might be like. Asleep in a closet somewhere.
First thing after waking up
Again, because of her unique sleep schedule and everything, I think she wakes up a lot, but once she wakes up for the last time before showtime I think she probably takes the time to get a really big, proper meal and lets herself really fill up before she starts getting properly ready for patrol and tackling any cases. Probably after eating she takes the time to wake up her body fully with exercises and stuff before taking care of everything else.
Favorite location
I think she really does feel at home in the manor and enjoys all the different nooks and crannies she can carve out for herself, little private spaces that nobody knows about except her and Alfred. Places that are calm and quiet where she doesn’t have to worry about being overwhelmed by the chaos of everything, the overwhelming sensory issues she often experiences when she goes out into the world. Someplace just for her, and whoever she chooses to let in.

Overall opinion
I love Kasumi so much and she’s definitely up there as one of my favorite persona characters, except… canon Kasumi is really conflicted. I feel like I’ve explained this a couple times now but it really bothers me how the game introduces you to an interesting character with a dynamic personality, cheerful but troubled, shy but determined, and has you spend a significant amount of time with her between her confidant and the plot beats surrounding her, but then just… midway into the last arc, unveils that all of that was a lie and totally made up, and that this is actually a totally different person convinced she’s someone else!
Now, that already trips my unreality sensors, but the fact of the matter is that even ignoring the uncomfortable way this treats Sumire’s mental illness and the unreality stuff it subjects the audience for for the sake of a shitty twist, it also does a disservice to Sumire as her own character. We spend a significant portion of the game meeting Kasumi, or the Sumire who thinks she’s Kasumi, so not only do we have less time to get to know the real Sumire, it also kind of sets us up to not like her. We’re being forced to view Sumire immediately as a replacement for the Kasumi we’ve known up to now, to continue judging her against her sister, which is just a metatextual version of exactly the same thing she was doing in the text, which kind of undermines the intended point. I like Sumire as a character well enough, but she isn’t the character I enjoyed meeting to begin with, so I’m always going to be a little frustrated judging her against a nonexistent character that I liked more and now have to live with being gone. It’s not fair to either character to give us one when we should have had both, to be honest.
Not to shill a story I’m involved in but Deja Vu is probably the only work I’ve seen so far that has made the decision to separate them into two proper characters, a choice that I feel like the game should have made to begin with, but on top of that, DV also preserves the twist and the impact it has on Kasumi’s character by retaining the unreality aspects and psychological angle without forcing Sumire to replace Kasumi as a character, instead introducing her as her own wonderful and fleshed-out character. Kasumi’s cheerful and cutesy attitude being her genuine self makes it a lot easier to like her without being worried that I’m like, perpetuating the anxious spirals of a fictional character, and the other little touches added to Kasumi’s character are great. The autism, the speech impediment that her attitude towards evolves with her character in a subtle but meaningful way. Gosh. DV good.
Gender / sexuality
I think Kasumi is bisexual with a strong preference for girls! I also think she’s trans, because I think almost every persona character is trans and no one can stop me from thinking it.
Favorite canon moment
I wish her awakening was a little better than it was, but it’s not dhdkfnf. I also wish we got some more interesting stuff between the royal trio given how much they were highlighted in early marketing for royal only for them to be together for ultimately a pretty short time and have some fairy limited and kind of bland banter. As it stands, some of the best Kasumi moments are probably her appearance in the casino in the beginning of the game- yes, it’s kind of obviously forced to show you this cool new character and kind of ruins the scene’s pacing, but she IS cool in it so it works as a Kasumi scene even if not a good plot scene- and the conversation between Ren, Kasumi and Akechi about the Thieves.
Favorite fan work moment
All of Kasumi’s early appearances in Deja Vu have a special place in my heart because they endear the reader to her so quickly and they genuinely affected me specifically and made me feel like I was able to like this character that had previously left me kind of uncomfortable any time I thought about her.
Favorite line
This is always tough… I think as much as I hate the canon twist and everything, “the weak, insecure Sumire dies today” from her second awakening is a great line.
Characters I love seeing them with
Surprising nobody, I really do like her dynamic with Akechi, but mostly because of the way we’ve expanded upon it for DV. The game just throws it out there that Akechi, the guy who isn’t honest with anybody and is hostile to basically everybody, is best friends with Kazumi, a very sweet and genuine person, and then never touches on that again. The potential for their friendship is tremendous and the game forgets it set it up as quickly as it introduced it. On top of that, she and Ren have a great dynamic given their similar situations and the way their bond develops. And of course, most of all, I really really love seeing her interact with Futaba. They’re both such disaster gays and I love the way they bounce of each other, transfem hacker gal and her sporty gf. They’re fantastic together and super duper cute, and it quickly became my favorite ship once DV gave me the idea basically dhdjdjd.
Last thing before bed
I think Kasumi’s very ADHD and scatterbrained so she waits until late to do stuff like brush her teeth and everything and also knows she can’t be trusted to remember her meds in the morning so she has to set those out by her bed for herself in the morning. Then she gets a plushie to snuggle up with dbdjdnd.
Sleeping habits
For some reason I feel like Kasumi’s bed is covered in pillows and she just gets comfy and sleeps in a big pile of them with pillows against different spots of her so she’s nice and cozy dhdjfj and she tosses and turns a little in her sleep so she always has to gather them in the morning.
First thing in the morning
I think after taking her meds and such, she has a big breakfast. It’s important for her to have energy for the day, and I think she probably really loves breakfast foods too, so that helps. I think she’s kind of a morning person too so she loves getting to thoroughly enjoy that time before the day properly starts.
Favorite locations
Like all the Thieves I think she’s come to view LeBlanc as basically a second home dhdjfn. But on top of that, I think she likes parks! A good place to go jogging and just to hang out in general and experience the world, people watch and relax. I think she probably likes to have lunch in the park on her days off of school when she can, and starts bringing Sumire along once they’re reunited because she could definitely use some of that herself! They have a lot of fun. Sometimes Sumire points out people and makes rude jokes about them and Kasumi laughs while telling her to shush dhdjfj.
