supernatural s12e14 somewhere between heaven and hell (w. davy perez)
something to be said that they've managed to make me dislike the british mol plotline in new and exciting ways
SAM Yeah. Dude, why don’t you take a shower and change your clothes. You’ve been wearing the same pair of boxers for four days. DEAN Okay, one, weird that you know how much underwear I packed. SAM That’s what’s weird about this? DEAN And B, it’s two and two. Doesn’t count if you flip ‘em inside out.
okay, gross, dean-o. but also, sam, he's got you there, that is in fact weird.
goddamnit davy. i was willing to let it die that i couldn't figure out what paul reiser uses in mad about you (1->B or A->2) because even after literally watching several full episodes and handfuls of clips i couldn't find an instance of it but now i'm gonna end up doing it again. reminded me though i had forgotten about the occasional crossovers with friends it had, via phoebe/ursula (mostly). and also i love helen hunt
SAM Same as the others. I-I made a computer algorithm that scrapes data from police scanners, emergency calls, uh, local news sites, and then it puts everything through a h--
[Dean stares at Sam] SAM The computer told me. DEAN Computers. Monsters, porn. Is there anything they can't do?
i'm staring at sam for different reasons -_- stupid lies, stupid bmol
DEAN I'm using that fancy shampoo you keep hidden from me.
should make a tag for all the things that i thought were fanon but turn out to be canon
cas with the tabloid giving the goofy xfiles vibes, following up with the manager and the reptilian alien theory
Tumblr media
HERB Most sheeple can't handle the truth. But not me. I'm woke. It's why I don't use, uh, new tech. Anything past '96, it's a trap. You know…Palm Pilot. It's more like Tracking Device. Am I right?
made me laugh out loud. another blast from the past. i tried to use an old first generation palm pilot but i just couldn't get the swing of putting shit down anywhere because i didn't use an organizer on paper either. wasn't until my memory went to (even more) shit and i could put things in my calendar and have my phone scream at me about it did i really appreciate it
Tumblr media
they've been giving them better fitted suits lately, both lookin sharp
DEAN Tell her what? No, seriously, Sam, what are you gonna say? “Hi, my name is Sam Winchester. This is my much handsomer brother Dean. We hunt monsters. Oh, and that guy you were banging? We're pretty sure he made a deal with a demon, so a hellhound came and dragged his soul to Hell. But you? You're cool. And since there's nothing around for us to kill, peace out.”
much handsomer :p
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's funny how i have zero faith in crowley's ability to keep lucifer locked up. maybe that's the point. but it's kind of sad :p i like how clever and wily crowley can be, but they've done a good job building up lucifer (to me, and i basically ignore what he did jumping around meatsuits recently 🤪)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they're sure doing a thing with these two
did this hellhound get out and go rogue because crowley's too busy playing with lucifer?
ah funny, this angel kelvin is in the boys too - 32 episodes! as black noir
CROWLEY Right after God said, “Let there be light,” he -- he made a whole bunch of things -- posies, koalas, hellhounds. He wanted The Creator's best friend, but the hounds were too vicious. So he planned on having them all put down, until along came our favorite fallen angel. He rescued one of the hounds -- a pregnant bitch named Ramsey. DEAN Why don't you just tell her to heel? CROWLEY I can't control her. No one can. She's loyal only to Lucifer.
the snort of derision i just made. so ridiculous
DEAN Great. So we have a hellhound who's gunning for revenge, and it's personal. Ah. Just when I thought this gig couldn't get any weirder… CROWLEY Oh. It can always get weirder.
Tumblr media
-_-
DEAN You tend to ride the brakes. SAM Dean, I know how to drive. DEAN I'm just saying. Okay, just imagine she's a… a beautiful woman. SAM Oh, come on. Get out of here. DEAN A beautiful, beautiful woman. SAM I'm done. DEAN Sam… CROWLEY Ew.
somewhere someone surely has kept track of how many times sam has driven baby because it's been a decent amount :p like leaning into a fandom trope
CASTIEL Joshua. I thought he stepped aside. KELVIN He did. But like I said, all hands on deck situation. Imagine it, Castiel -- free to come and go as you please, part of your family, your true family, again. Look… the Gardener's got a plan. All we ask is that you hear us, hear him out. For the greater good.
(another person who says castiel how i expected it to be said, CASStiel as opposed to castiEL) ok more heavenly politics i'll forget but i like this guy more at least and cas being healthily and visibly skeptical helps. joshua, gardener, ok. like the dude they talked to in heaven in s5? 🥴
DEAN Yeah, well, I guess we've all changed. I got predictable. You got soft. I mean, a few years ago, who'd have thought you'd be helping us save the girl of the week? CROWLEY I don't care about her. DEAN Yeah, well, maybe we rubbed off on you. CROWLEY Don't flatter yourself. DEAN You saved Cas.
took an absurd amount of scraping through memories to figure out what that was. i was like oh when crowley gave him the grace that he was dying from lack of? no that was a long time ago, surely there's something more recent. oh right, snapping the .... lance of michael? to stop cas from rotting all of *checks notes* 3 episodes ago in 12x12
CROWLEY Just to spare myself the Winchester Manpain-- you lot moping about like a bunch of schoolgirls. DEAN Well, I just wanna say thank you. CROWLEY Or…a few years ago, who would've thought you'd be working with the King of Hell? Maybe you've rubbed off on me. Maybe I've rubbed off all over you.
deflect from being called out on doing something good by being gross, of course :p also a move in dean's repertoire
GWEN I… I don't think I even know what “okay” means anymore. Marcus… going camping was my idea. I took him out there even though I knew. I knew it was over. I liked Marcus. He was sweet and kind. And he loved me. More than I ever loved him. More than… If I'd just told him… If I… Why couldn't I just tell him the truth? SAM Gwen… GWEN Yeah, but I didn't. [Voice breaking] I lied. I lied to make things easier. I… I'm sorry. I… We should go.
not sure what the point of that was other than an excuse to have them pulled over and not moving, give her another emotional scene
hopefully pretty girl of the week will feel less guilty since she saved sam from the hellhound long enough that he could kill it
Tumblr media
CROWLEY You make me your dog, I'll make you my slave. That chain around your neck? Was nothing. A stylish accessory. This vessel… That's your true prison. It's been warded with runes and spellwork from the Cage, carved into every molecule. In there? I own you.
Tumblr media
CASTIEL She’s with Dagon, Prince of Hell.
answers my princess question
Tumblr media
are you making good choices, castiel? 🧐 going to heaven without telling sam and dean what's going on doesn't seem like the best choice but what do i know
DEAN Mm, is that your computer talking to you again? SAM Uh… No. Um… It's, uh… Mick Davies. DEAN What? SAM Dean… I don't have a computer program feeding me cases. I-I, uh… Gwen? Every job we've worked in the last two weeks? They've come from the British Men of Letters. DEAN Really? SAM Yeah. I didn't tell you 'cause I know how much you hate them. DEAN No, we hate them. Us. Together.
have heard the we/us thing
SAM I-I get that. Yeah, I do. But -- but… Dean, because of Mick and his guys, the Alpha Vampire is dead. They get results. I don't like them either, but-- but if-- if we can save people, then it… Either way, I-I shouldn't have lied to you. And… I'm sorry, man. I-I… DEAN Well, okay. SAM Okay? DEAN What do you want me to say? Do I like it? No. Do I trust them? Hell, no. But you're right. We work with people we don't trust all the time. I mean, hell, I just Liam Neeson'd it up with Crowley. So if you wanna give this a shot, then… [ Scoffs ] Fine. But the minute-- and I mean the second-- something feels off, we bail. SAM Yeah. Of course. Deal.
look at them, they're so mature now! talking things out almost right away, apologizing for the lying, dean being reasonable in listening to sam's argument and agreeing with him despite the strong feelings. so proud

I might be missing something obvious but why did Lucifer not need Nick's consent to use his body as a vessel?
I assume you mean when Crowley shoved him back into Nick's body in 12.08? Using a modified version of Rowena's "send him directly to the cage" spell and the banishing egg... heck what was that thing called... THE HYPERBOLIC PULSE GENERATOR, right.
>.>
Honestly, for me? The only part of that whole situation was that Nick was apparently STILL IN THERE TOO.
In 12.13, Crowley describes to Lucifer how he crammed him back in Nick's vessel. And you know what, I'm not putting a bunch of Eugenie villain monologue dialogue here, because I am just too tired lol. If you want to read start here:
http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/12.13_Family_Feud_(transcript)
from the first FLASHBACK scene (just search that word on that page, it takes you right there)
Davy TRIES to make it make sense in 12.15, explaining how Nick's body was effectively made into the cage:
CROWLEY: That chain around your neck? Was nothing. A stylish accessory. This vessel… That's your true prison. It's been warded with runes and spellwork from the Cage, carved into every molecule. In there? I own you. [ Sighs ] I'm just getting started. So… I'm gonna put you back in your hole, and then I'm gonna go find your spawn, and I'm gonna rip him apart while you watch. And then? I'm still just getting started. [Crowley punches Lucifer in the face]
I remember being like YES CROWLEY DOES HAVE A PLAN, THIS WILL ALL MAKE SENSE EVENTUALLY. Like... why would he of ALL people not want to shove Lucifer into the cage and lock it back up? It just made NO SENSE.
And all Davy's hard work at laying down a coherent explanation for HOW he was crammed in there falls apart in the next bucklemming episode with all the wtf "polarity reversal" nonsense. And Lucifer taking back control of his vessel and having that same sort of power over Crowley.
WHY. IT WAS ALL SO STUPID.
Things Crowley could've done after 12.17 but for some reason did not:
-recruit the winchesters for help, confessing what he did with lucifer -rebuilt the Lance of Michael (Davy in 12.12 again trying to give us a weapon that could stop Lucifer... and Crowley breaking it to save Cas... he and Cas had a mutual interest in killing Lucifer at this point...) -asked for Rowena's help sending Lucifer back to the actual cage... or HONESTLY if Crowley understood her spell enough to pervert its course to send Luci to Nick's body, he should've been able to do this one himself... >.>
Probably half a dozen other things that would've made more sense... but no...
The show wanted Lucifer/Nick more than it wanted Crowley, which... ugh...
Which brings us to the end of s13, and Lucifer's demise. I assumed that would actually be the last we'd see of him. *ugly laughing*
But no, apparently whatever magic Crowley had used to forge the Nick Vessel for Crowley required Nick's soul actually being in there? Which as you point out with your question is... nonsensical...
The phrase "discarded vessel" Crowley uses in his first convo with re-envesseled Lucifer implies "empty," i.e. that Nick was no longer in there. Knowing what we do of Nick, and the assumption that he was dead after 5.22, the logical conclusion was that he went to Hell and Crowley just shoved him in the "cage vessel" with Lucifer, or otherwise used his soul in the reconstruction of that vessel into something equivalent to the Cage. I think they were hoping there was enough flimflam in there for us to just handwave that one and not think too hard about it.
Which is honestly how I approach all Eugenie plot points. The most unfortunate thing is how it clearly affects the rest of canon, with Lucifer and then Nick overstaying their plot welcome by a decade. Though I do appreciate the other writers doing their best to point out how Lucifer's entire plot out beyond s11 revolved around how he felt he'd been rendered irrelevant to the story, and always fighting to center himself in the narrative as if anyone cared about him at all. Even Chuck just... dismissed him, basically. So... at least we have that shred of satisfaction?
But yeah, it's... it's exhausting, and this is the best explainer I've been able to come up with for any of it. I should probably have some more coffee and read this over to make sure I didn't miss anything big, but I just don't want to devote any more brain power to thinking about Nick rn... maybe later. :'D

“Hey Pittsburgh, we uh...we got a thing for ya” Fight Night: Rockhold vs Branch preview
So for the majority of you/us, Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez is THE fight of the year in boxing and maybe even in MMA if we never get McGregor vs the winner of Ferg/Lee. For the slimmest of you, aka me and other hardcore UFC fans who have compulsion problems, we will be watching the UFC's Fight Night LIVE from Pittsburgh. I almost thought about heading out to this show but the ride would've been too much for a main event involving David Branch. I'll just wait for an inevitable return to Philly I suppose. Sometime before 2025 please? Anyways this show is...it's weird. There's been far worse free TV offerings from the UFC but it's also not great. What's more, it's not great on a night where great programming abounds everywhere (Louisville/Clemson, LSU/Mississippi State, Texas/USC on free TV, GGG vs Canelo) and the entire MMA and boxing community are recovering from the Mayweather/McGregor show. In the end, we're left with a fine show pitting some fine fighters against one another in some fine contests. The headliner is what a boxing trainer I knew would refer to as "mandatory non-destination programming." In other words, it's an important fight that's hard to care for. Beyond that the show has a nice mix of fighters who COULD be major players in the division vs established veteran challengers and intriguing on paper fights which would be hard pressed to not at least be amusing. All in all, this is just a card on a Saturday designed to fill out a predetermined schedule. Proceed accordingly.
Fights: 11
Debuts:  2 (Azunna Anwanyu and Alex Reyes)
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 2 (Thiago Alves OUT, Alex Reyes IN vs Mike Perry/ Dimitriy Sosnovski OUT, Azunna Anwanyu IN vs Justin Ledet)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 4 (Luke Rockhold, Hector Lombard, Sergio Moraes and Anthony Hamilton)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC:  2 (Hector Lombard, Felipe Arantes)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 8 (Sergio Moraes, Kamaru Usman, Gregor Gillespie, Anthony Smith, Justin Ledet, Tony Martin, Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Uriah Hall)
Stat Monitor for 2017:
Debuting Fighters (Current number: 25-23)- Zu Anwanyu, Alex Reyes
Short Notice Fighters (Current number: 17-25)- Zu Anwanyu, Alex Reyes
Second Fight (Current number: 22-27)-  Daniel Spitz
Cage Corrosion (14-7)- Luke Rockhold
Twelve Precarious Ponderings:
1- I wonder if I didn't give this main card enough credit on paper for being decent enough to get by. It's not going to wow anybody BUT that's neither her nor there; it's just not an awful showcase. The main event is a dull fight on paper BUT Rockhold vs Branch has some serious divisional relevance and you can absolutely appreciate on paper what the point is behind said fight. Mike Perry vs Thiago Alves on paper was a great test for both guys but Alves fell out. It would be easy to just call this a scrub fight BUT Mike Perry himself was like a week notice replacement for somebody once. The same could be said for Justin Ledet vs competent regional HW Zu Anwanyu on short notice. I have little interest in Anthony Smith vs Hector Lombard on paper but Smith is on a finishing roll in the UFC and Hector Lombard COULD be fighting for his job. Gregor Gillespie is coming off a really impressive mowing down of Andrew Holbrook and could be a player at 155 lbs. Lastly you have an intriguing fight between Kamaru Usman and Sergio Moraes primarily because Moraes is the first guy who stylistically people would say has a shot at stifling Usman (a bigger stronger grappler type). It's not as bad as I imagined.
2- Is Luke Rockhold the most hated UFC fighter ever? This Bisping-GSP fiasco is entirely on his shoulders because if he beats Bisping, we're not dealing with any of this mess.
3- It's believed that Branch is getting this fight because a) Anderson Silva said no, b) Romero would take it but only if it was three rounds and c) Jacare doesn't want to fight any time soon. So David Branch draws Luke Rockhold in the main event and lest we forgot, Branch is absolutely Mr. Ratings. Now what can David Branch necessarily do to Luke Rockhold? I mean....I 'unno. Branch has been training for five round fights since he essentially wound up at WSOF. Now counter to that, so has Luke Rockhold. Branch has been successful at LHW but I have little doubt Rockhold's future is at 205 lbs by the end of 2018 at the earliest. Branch is pretty strong in the clinch but Rockhold made Weidman look small in the clinch. Rockhold's grappling is world's better than Branch. The one key caveat is that Rockhold has, at times, looked chinny during his UFC run. Getting finished by Vitor is not the end of the world given Vitor's.....physique but there's simply no way to justify getting flattened by Bisping. No way no how.
4- Without looking it up, guess who is younger between Rockhold and Branch and also by how much.
5- How many finishes would Mike Perry have to get in a row before his detractors acknowledged that he brings excitement to events?
6- Of all the fighters on this main card, no one guy has the ability to challenge for the title and soon the way Kamaru Usman has. Usman's wrestling is above and beyond the call of duty and his striking seems to be improving as well. The downside is that beyond the best wrestler in the UFC is like a big glowing tag that reads BORING on it, even though Usman tends to be a hyperactive ground and pounder who just seems to lack the ability to get that ONE fight finishing shot. If he can finish Kamaru Usman, he might take that BIG step up the rankings that people seem to be waiting for him to take. Sergio Moraes has been successful across a collection of weight classes (185 on TUF, 170 in the actual UFC) and he's a crazy good grappler who AT LEAST has pop in his hands. It's a good test for Usman as the UFC tries to figure out if he's a nuisance or a star on the rise.
7- Is Anthony Hamilton vs Daniel Spitz potentially the worst sanctioned fight  (MMA, boxing, kickboxing, shoot wrestling, pillow) in the history of the universe?
8- There are a lot of wrasslers on this card and grappler types matched up; one such fight is Olivier Aubin Mercier taking on Tony Martin. OAM is a grappler first and foremost with a knack for submissions (although getting there is a chore). Tony Martin is a grinder who has suddenly discovered that he can strike over his last few fights. Mercier is hard to hit but doesn't react well when he IS hit while Martin seems to struggle with his cardio and his angles. It's a well matched clash on paper.
9- Felipe Arantes vs Luke Sanders is a really intriguing fight and one of those sleeper bouts you get one of those  FS1 cards during a block of FS1 cards where you go "Oh shit that's a freakin' great fight." Sanders is 1-1 in the UFC but he could be 2-0 had he not made a tactical error vs Iuri Alcantara. Felipe Arantes is one of those guys who dropped down in weight and seemed to find himself. After going 3-3-1 at 145 lbs, Arantes moved down in weight to 135 lbs and he's gone 2-1 and could be undefeated in the weight class  depending on how you view his split decision loss to a one legged Erik Perez. Both guys are action oriented fighters although Sanders tends to keep things upright and batter dudes while Arantes has become more sub savvy at 135 lbs.
10- Okay so is Hector Lombard the biggest UFC bust ever? Also let's not forget that at 28, Anthony Smith would be among the younger top 15 guys.
11- Justin Ledet came into the UFC and boxed up Chase Sherman at high altitude for three rounds; a win that in hindsight looks a lot better. Then he went into Belfast and submitted Mark Godbeer in relatively easy fashion. Zu Anwanyu is a good veteran HW who hits hard, hits infrequently and is one of those guys who just does stuff just to do it.
12- We still in on this Uriah Hall buzz or nah?
Must Win
1- Luke Rockhold
There's simply no way to describe this; Luke Rockhold cannot lose to Michael Bisping and Davis Branch back to back. You cannot be a top 10 MW and do that. You just can't.
2- Hector Lombard
The argument could be made that Lombard is the biggest flop in UFC history. A win over Anthony Smith doesn't prevent that from being the case BUT a loss might as well solidify it.  Aging Hendo to bloated Hendricks to Anthony Smith? Irreplacable.
3- Kamaru Usman
Usman may be the best prospect between 170 and 205 lbs----but he's lacking a really signature win or finish to cement that. As of right now, he's just a really talented wrestler with powerful g-n-p who fight fans do not care to see. A win over Sergio Moraes would absolutely challenge that thought process ESPECIALLY if he gets a finish.
Five Must See Fights
1- Gregor Gillispie vs Jason Gonzales
Simply put, Gregor Gillispie is a very unique talent in a division filled with them. Jason Gonzalez has the ability to challenge Gregor in a few areas but this should be a fun exciting showcase for a good fighter.
2- Mike Perry vs Alex Reyes
I know nothing of Alex Reyes but Mike Perry has finished 3 of his 4 UFC fights, all in relatively violent fashion. He's an all offense, no defense sort of fighter who relies on his chin. He's got some scary Leben-esque tendencies to his game.
3- Kamaru Usman vs Sergio Moraes
This is a total stylistic clash but one where the stylistic advantages of both fighters suggest whomever has improved the most outside of their strengths will dictate who wins. That makes it fun and compelling.
4- Luke Rockhold vs David Branch
The question re: Rockhold's chin make this a compelling fight on paper. Chances are once the bell rings, it'll be a whole lot less compelling.
5- Daniel Spitz vs Anthony Hamilton
This has "must be seen to be believed" written all over it.

supernatural s14e16 don't go in the woods (w. davy perez, nick vaught)
just hanging out in the dark. in the morning.
DEAN What you looking at? Porn? Sex tapes? Nip slips? SAM The internet is more than just naked people. You do know that, right? DEAN Not my Internet.
sure sure
DEAN I don't know. Something about being cooped up in the bunker for a few weeks. We all need to stretch our legs. I get it. SAM All right. Uh, then, Jack. DEAN Uh... I don't want Jack on this.
novel concept, looking to get people to tag along and explaining why they're not
so is jack gonna make some friends with the kids in town? and also. they kind of do what they have done with cas in the past with jack, i think. where it varies how clued in on acting like a person he is
MAX Hey, it's...cool. We know. About their whole Hunter thing. JACK Oh. Good. I don't like to lie. It makes my stomach hurt. Like when you have to burp, but you can't burp. Yeah.
laying it on real thick.
Tumblr media
JACK Well, we have movie nights on Tuesdays. Dean usually picks. I've seen "Lost Boys" like 36 times.
is sam participating in movie nights too? because i imagine his tolerance for lost boys over and over would be about nil :p
STACY It's $37.08. But for the beer, I need to see some ID. JACK ID?
being that he's been on hunts pretending to be law enforcement etc i think he would be familiar with the concept.
Tumblr media
always appreciate when they show his hair getting visibly wet. can't really tell on short hair so the effect would be lost without the cue from sam's :p
Tumblr media
bound to end well
Tumblr media
looks cool at least. great idea leaving jack unsupervised when you're questioning his ability to make good choices
they're doing that music that's i think supposed to be a little dissonant/creepy but doesn't sound like one of the musical instruments is playing completely out of tune unlike john's episode
great, stabbed one of the girls accidentally. peachy. least he finally figured out how to heal. but no more friends
SHERIFF ROMERO Pretty much. They say that boy not only ate his family, they said he went… mad with hunger. He went after my people, and then when my tribe caught him, they… Killing him would have been too easy. They wanted that boy to suffer. For his crimes against our people, crimes against nature. They cursed him. He's doomed to roam the woods… always starving. And if he didn't feed… his body would eat itself. The Kohonta aren't born. They're made.
that seems like a lousy curse to release someone with on your land...???
SHERIFF ROMERO They bound him to this forest. They marked the trees to keep folks away. But that was a long time ago.
LOL ok
SAM No. No. It doesn't work like that. People die. Even when they know how to fight, people still die.
took me a hot minute to understand why he was getting all torn up about it. good thing the recap reminded me he felt guilty about the au hunters dying in the bunker because he was their leader because otherwise i'd have forgotten 🥴 i think it's the now-perennial problem of having too many plotlines, it feels really half assed to me how they established the au hunters and sam's relationship to them all, but then i'm supposed to buy into his trauma from them dying. if it had been a consistent and significant presence then maybe half a season would be enough for me to be on board
ALSO if cas watched jack burn that snake to ash, with the reasoning that would have everyone questioning his moral compass, now doesn't seem like the best time to bounce because you're feeling cooped up. also ALSO, did cas not tell sam and dean? hadn't he been very open with them about jack's soul situation prior? now he's gonna keep that very relevant detail - especially when he's leaving - to himself?? started thinking too much
looking at the linked script from the wiki, but it's a 2nd writer's draft and it's pretty significantly different from what made it on screen. cas being out wasn't explained, jack picks up on them wanting him to stay readily, less socially oblivious jack interacting with the kids outside the store, changed the thing that triggered sam's trauma from the kid getting his girlfriend killed by virtue of being out there to the version we see about even being trained hunters people die doing it (which definitely makes a lot more sense and still feels ham-fisted :p)
well that's interesting. sam shooting with his left hand because he's got the silver knife in the right. and i think that monster munched on his arm
SAM How about the truth? He's your son. He deserves the truth.
LOL is this about dean lying to jack about why he should stay home? advice and little passive aggressive dig to the co-parent twofer
i liked all the small reactions in this conversation. and savage takedown of dean's argument there, bringing up how they lied to john about being okay to make him happy. oof
Tumblr media
JACK Oh. Well, I got the supplies. Except for the beer. I didn't have ID. DEAN You have tons of IDs. JACK They're fake. SAM Jack... listen. Dean and I, we -- we want to talk to you about your powers. JACK W-What about them? DEAN This Hunt, we, uh... we didn't want you coming along because we didn't want you using them. SAM Not yet. Not for now. You know, you just got 'em back, Jack. We want to make sure you're comfortable with them again before you... DEAN Before you go all X-Men. It was crappy of us not to tell you. You know, we were trying to be nice. 'Cause we care about you. But because we care about you, you deserve the truth.
good job, dads.
SAM You understand that? Jack? JACK I understand. I won't use my powers without permission. Promise. DEAN Great. And I guess I'll go get some beer. SAM What about everything else? You good? I mean, anything happen while we were gone? JACK No. Nothin'. SAM Good.
no longer clueless baby, vaguely evil music playing in the background. not really sure where they're going with this

Joey, baby - don't get crazy Detours, fences, I get defensive I know you've heard it all before So I don't say it anymore I just stand by and let you Fight your secret war And though I used to wonder why I used to cry till I was dry Still sometimes I get a strange pain inside Oh, Joey, if you're hurting so am I Joey, honey, I got some money All is forgiven. Listen, listen But if I seem to be confused I didn't mean to be with you And when you said I scared you Well I guess you scared me too But we got lucky once before And I don't want to close the door And if you're somewhere out there Passed out on the floor Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore And if I seem to be confused I didn't mean to be with you And when you said I scared you Well I guess you scared me too But if it's love you're looking for Then I can give a little more And if you're somewhere drunk and Passed out on the floor Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore Angry anymore, angry anymore

I've been peeking in on twitter more often than usual over the last few days, partly because I spent the weekend working a con with Zerbe and didn't have time to spend scrolling tumblr, and partly in looking at the numerous Hot Bad Takes about Steve Yockey getting what appears to be a once in a lifetime sort of opportunity for a writer and leaving Supernatural before the series is finished, and partly because since the show is ending this year and there's so many campaigns to show our love to the cast and crew... but I haven't seen anyone start a campaign to show our love to the one group of people who've already been laboring away on s15 for more than a month already: THE BELOVED WRITERS WHO ARE CRAFTING OUR RUN TO THE FINISH LINE!
(presented with a focus on the writers who have a social media presence on twitter, who will actually see this...)
They've been hard at work since May preparing to bring us one final season of Team Free Will in their last stand against the Cosmic Drama that has been building up to this for the last 14 years. I'd really love to begin a concerted campaign to share our love for what they do, and not just in a generalized squee sort of way, but in the same way we offer thoughtful comments on fic. I feel bad because I spend all my time writing about the glory of the narrative structure of this show, the brilliance of Dabb's showrunning direction, the depth of Meredith Glynn's character study (especially of Dean, but honestly of all the characters, including Cas... remember 14.17? Cas has amply demonstrated just how much he understands the value of his human family, and is on the road to understanding what he might also mean to them).
The care with wich Bobo has crafted some of the most painful leaps in emotional growth for the characters (hello, 14.18... you can watch a a microcosm of Dean's entire emotional journey over the course of the show encapsulated in that single episode). Master of the Fanfiction Gap-- and in partnership with Meredith-- the providers of possibly the most efficient and broad emotional layering through glimpses of the past in the current narrative... I know I'm not explaining this well, but, I SEE WHAT THEY DID THERE, with everything from the mixtape-- and not even the shippy implications of it, but using that singular moment to show us the breadth and depth of all the characters' relationships by reminding us of all the things we never actually see on screen, yet which still happen in the characters' "real lives." And holy HECK 14.18 was a master class in that, with the layered flashbacks to explore each character’s relationship with Mary.
One of my most-referred back to episodes of s14 has been 14.08, Byzantium, which honestly the meta implications of the title alone spurred some of the most interesting discussions I've had on the cosmology of the show's universe, and laid some solid groundwork for what I presume will be the direction the show takes in s15. SOULS DETERMINE THEIR OWN FATE! Our choices DO matter! And we have Meredith Glynn to thank for that.
This is the sort of excellent writing that makes these characters so real to us, that keeps us invested in the characters and the show. They DO feel like real people, with full lives in three dimensions, and our televisions are the portal to their universe that we're only gifted a tiny portion of in 42 minute chunks. And yet... we do feel like we understand so much of their lives that we DON'T see on screen, precisely because of this incredibly layered and subtle character study.
Which brings me to the newest writer on staff, Jeremy Adams. He gave us the glory that is Scoobynatural, under some incredibly tight constraints (given the limitations of how they were allowed to present the Scoobyverse within the Supernatural universe's rules), and I'm incredibly excited to see his more standard take on Sam, Dean, and Cas in a full-on episode of Supernatural. And honestly, we need more along the lines of The Killer Stuffed Dinosaur In Love. I think, if anything, Jeremy has a solid hold on who these characters are-- both the surface layer and the far deeper emotional layers-- as well as a fresh take on the show’s inherent sense of humor.
(and I mean COME ON in Dabb era, the era of the author of 8.08, we know there’s an element of brilliant Cartoon Logic to the narrative)
And we can't forget Davy Perez, who effectively provided us a guidebook on How To Watch This Show: Meta Edition with 14.04 Mint Condition, and then used this guide to break us all completely with 14.11 Damaged Goods. But also setting up a mirror confrontation for how Mary parents her boys in how she deals with Dean here, which will become painfully, horrifically twisted around in how she presents the exact same choice to Jack in 14.17/14.18. I'm wibbling just thinking about it, and honestly that's what good writing DOES. It grabs you by the feelers and does not let go.
And ALL of this has happened under Dabb's orchestration. All these other writers are effectively telling us HIS story. I don't think they're all getting the credit they deserve. Yes, I write rhapsodic about their episodes on tumblr, but they never see it. I think, heading into this final season, we all owe these people the praise and thanks they deserve to hear, and not just the usual Twitter Terrible Hot Take machine they're typically exposed to.
To that end, I've done a bit of research and made a contact who has promised to hand deliver our gratitude directly to these writers who need to hear it most. The cast is steeped in our gratitude at every con, and there's been multiple campaigns in fandom to thank the tireless crew who works on set every day to bring this show to us. But as a writer, I understand how thankless their job can feel. And I have an idea of what would absolutely mean the most to them: Direct messages of "I see what you did there."
I got a message to that effect on my fic Cakepocalypse! a few weeks ago, and I'm gonna share it here (without attribution, since I haven't asked the commenter for permission to share it), but it is the PERFECT example of the sort of thing I want to give the SPN writers:
Tumblr media
[transcript of the image: comment:  Ok, I'm re-reading this and I'm amazed to see that there are more hints as to what's really going on much sooner than I realized! You must have worked really hard structuring all this! Wow, the mind boggles.
my response:  HEEE! OMG THANK YOU THIS IS THE BEST. I, being a Nervous Author Type, was worried I would give it all away too soon, or that nobody would notice what I was doing and feel like the surprise comes out of nowhere, so this is literally the most satisfying possible comment you could've given and I appreciate you so much rn. Thank you :'D]
I can't even BEGIN to express how much this simple comment meant to me. I felt PERFECTLY SEEN. And I want to share that feeling with the writers who craft this show for us to enjoy, because all of them deserve to know that we care about the characters and their story and their eventual fate as much as they do.
So here's my proposal:
It doesn't have to be complex. You don't need to write them novels, but I think sharing the sort of specific love and appreciation for them that I've attempted to express above will go MILES toward energizing the writers as they move into the final season. Let's share with them how much this entire journey has meant to us. Let's let them know that WE SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING THERE!
If you're comfortable going on twitter, by all means take your appreciation directly to the source. Here's a link to the thread I tweeted out to this effect for a reference if you'd like one:
https://twitter.com/MittensMorgul/status/1146137421345636352
(and because I think twitter cut my thread in half, here’s the rest: https://twitter.com/MittensMorgul/status/1146137437170626560)
If you're not on twitter (or are D: over sharing your love so openly for whatever reason), I will open my submissions here on tumblr. You can write a letter of appreciation which I will ensure (anonymously if you prefer) will reach the writers directly. I'll also be compiling a list of links to meta or other tumblr posts you feel the writers will appreciate reading, but I will only share them with explicit permission from the authors of said posts. So if you want to share your love that way, please submit links to the specific posts you'd like me to share with them and I’ll make sure they get them.
My tumblr experience has been a gleeful love letter to this show, but I know the writers aren't seeing any of it. If anyone deserves to feel our love (especially as writers ourselves-- meta, fic, etc.-- or even as appreciators of excellent writing), it's the people who have poured themselves into creating this show for us. Regardless of what we ship, or what our expectations might be going into s15, I think it's important for us to acknowledge them now, and let them know how important Supernatural has been to all of us.

Dabb on 14.11:
Tumblr media
from an article on the history of the Jack in the Box:
https://www.tititudorancea.com/z/jack_in_the_box_97.htm
The full quote reads:
Another theory as to the origin of the jack-in-the-box is that it comes from the 13th century English prelate Sir John Schorne, who is often pictured holding a boot with a devil in it. According to folklore, he once cast the devil into a boot to protect the village of North Marston in Buckinghamshire. This theory may explain why in French, a jack-in-the-box is called a "diable en boîte" (literally "boxed devil").

I'm pretty sure it actually was John because they were using a whole bunch older clips from the show - 1x13, 2x18, 3x13 (I think?), 5x13 (John clip), 8x06, etc. (I think there were a few more but those are the ones that immediately come to mind) (Also it probably doesn't mean anything but that's an interesting percentage of E13s...)
OH GOSH. I’ve been meaning to go back and watch the movie trailer, and you gave me the best excuse.
the preview screen is hilarious: “The film advertised has not yet been rated.” and then in a box below that: “THIS FILM NOT YET RATED. ALSO, NOT YET WRITTEN, CAST, SHOT, EDITED, OR SCORED.”
pffft
October 31, 1983, trick or treaters walk by a house that at least calls back to 4.07, and Samhain walking among trick or treaters in a similar locale.
(also two days before Mary died, Sam was fed demon blood, and the Winchesters’ lives would change forever)
David Yaeger (which translates as Hunter) was “an honest man, making an honest living.” And you’re right, they literally used the clip of the back of John Winchester from 5.13, showing “David Yaeger” going to work at his garage:
Tumblr media
This cap is from 5.13, on HotN.
“UNTIL ONE NIGHT, WHEN A PRACTICAL JOKE TURNED DEADLY.” They used the clip from 8.06, about a specter who possessed people to get revenge. Dean was it’s final victim then, but the clip they used was of a woman who was still angry with her husband like 35 years later because he took another woman to prom while they’d been broken up, so she killed him by crushing him with the car he was working on...
Tumblr media
Cap from 8.06, kicking out the jack. Interestingly, in 8.06, she got IN THE CAR, turned it on, and kicked it into drive, which killed her husband. In 14.04, the preview cuts to a cap of the truck from 10.13 burning:
Tumblr media
Which, at the time it aired, had a lot of meta being written about the ghost of John Winchester attached to it...
A voiceover says, “One day, we’re gonna have to answer for the things we did that night,” while someone zips a body bag over a pair of charred sneakers. A girl answers in the voiceover, “It was just a prank!” while we pan over an axe in the charred hand of Hatchet Man.
And I couldn’t identify the source of the body bag shot, so if someone recognizes it, let me know and I’l update this post. But “It was just a prank!” makes me think of 1.17, Hell House, and the Winchester Prank Wars. Where the tulpa’d monster also wielded an axe, and ended up burning... It also pings to the themes of 10.13, and the dude did burn in his car in that one, too.
Then we skip to November 1, 1986, THREE YEARS LATER! “And now, David Yaeger is back with his faithful hatchet to get revenge on those who took his life.”
Note: he has TWO hatchets (like... two warriors he’s honed to get revenge... like John had Sam and Dean... one small hatchet and a big yellow axe)
Blonde dude with the red headband got himself stuck in a freaking candy machine? And that’s how Hatchet Man was able to get him?
“If the people responsible for his death weren’t torn up about it, they’re going to be.”
*lady in a red jacket and huge pink earrings screams*
(I think I had a pair of earrings just like that in 1986... okay... moving on)
TIME TO SLICE AND DICE!
“In this dark, quiet hospital, they can run, they can hide...”
*lady screams, “BUT WE KILLED YOU! YOU’RE DEAD”*
“but there’s no escaping the Hatchet Man”
TRICK OR TREAT!
*lady in elevator pushing buttons desperately* “NO NO NO! THIS CAN’T BE HAPPENING!”
WE ALL DO BAD THINGS SOMETIMES.
*TITLE CARD*
ALL SAINTS DAY III: THE RECKONING.
(probably from the producers of Hell Hazers III: The Reckoning)
PRAY FOR SURVIVAL.
And I mean, the entire episode, the fact it was pushing so much subtext at us all through horror movie tropes that are some of the most cliche devices in storytelling that practically EVERYONE knows... actively poking fun at these tropes in text (with the security guards, aka the General Audience casually watching, not realizing there’s like three parallel narratives unfolding on the other side of their safe little cubicle).
(seriously, having the GA insert actively identifying all the tropes and pointing them out, proving that EVERYONE understands how this works, on however a surface or subconscious level... this was brilliant).
This... was the most meta episode we’ve had in a good long while, and it’s just... overflowing with this sort of brilliance. Heck...

To me Yockey is arguably the best writer on the show; he is the only one whose episodes I love 100%. It really annoys me that he writes so few eps (last season he only did 3) while Bucklemming gets like 5 with like 3 of them being myth arc ones. Tbh the writing would be SOOOOO much better if he got to do more episodes. Out of curiosity who is your favorite writer?:)
Yockey is great, agreed. :)
I mean, I like most of the writers for different reasons, and can appreciate their stylistic differences, you know? I’ll get to that in a second, but first I’m gonna address the writing room hierarchy for a second… because that’s why the newer writers are only getting 3 episodes each, especially in a shorter season with only 20 slots available…
Dabb, as showrunner, gets the first and last episodes, and this year also the 300th. Last year he co-wrote 13.10 with Bobo, and in s12 he also wrote 12.09, as the post-winter-hellatus episodes.
Dabb’s been around for a really long time, and I get his writing style. Writing the season premiere and season finale every season now, he’s basically setting the foundation that the rest of the season rests on, and he gets the job done.
❂So that’s a total of 3 out of 20 accounted for.
Bobo is essentially next in line, and he has been getting 4-5 episodes per season since 11. 4 in 11 (co-wrote 11.17 with Dabb), 5 in 12 (co-wrote 12.19 with Meredith Glynn), 4 in 13 (co-wrote 12.09 with Dabb). I don’t know if he’s going to have 3 or 4 episodes this season, so I’m gonna guess it will be 3 just for the purposes of estimation…
I LOVE Bobo’s writing. I LOVE that he’s still giving us such powerful Wayward-adjacent content despite the heartbreak of not getting the spinoff we all deserved.
❂So that’s a total of 6 of the 20 accounted for.
This brings me to the three newer writers on the team…
Davy Perez has given us some fantastic episodes. As far as I know, he’ll be getting three again this season. I mean, dude gave us cowboys AND tentacles… and Dean being a complete nerd for comics and horror movies, “I love you, I love all of you,” and Donna kicking ass in 13.11. How can you NOT love that?
❂So that’s a total of 9 of the 20 accounted for.
Meredith Glynn has written some of the most beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful character studies that we’ve ever had on this show. She gave us Cas fighting for himself and facing his issues in the Empty, she gave us Dean losing himself and finding himself, and she gave us THE FUCKING MIXTAPE. Heck. Her love for all the characters is just written in big loopy letters all over her episodes.
I don’t know if this information will change, because it’s italicized on Jess’ s14 spoiler sheet, which means it’s still unconfirmed, but Meredith is listed as having four episodes in s14… 5 & 8 are already confirmed, but she’s tentatively listed for 14 and 17, too… She did write four in 12 and 13, as well, so that seems legit. :P
❂ So that’s 13 of the 20 accounted for.
Steve Yockey. Heck he writes such rich, layered episodes. They are a meta goldmine that we could spend weeks analyzing. Isn’t it convenient we’ve got an extra week to revel in 14.06? :D He’s probably on the list for three episodes again this season, and we’re lucky to have them.
❂ So that’s 16 of the 20 accounted for.
That leaves 4 for Bucklemming… and while they have a long history of ickiness and terrible things, they aren’t entirely horrible. I mean, 14.02 got the job done. 13.22 did as well. Heck, 13.18 too. They do write to the themes, and even when they fall short of the other writers in terms of the layering and nuance and meta-level of love for the show, they’re there and they’re not going away. I try to focus on what actually matters in terms of plot advancement in their episodes, and side-eye their bizarre takes on canon and weird retcons that only seem to apply to their episodes.
(and honestly bless the other writers for all their little jabs at some of the eye-roll worthy stuff in their episodes… I am giving significant glances at all of them and sliding them all fresh baked cookies and shots of bourbon, because I see what they did there…)
But yeah, I love all the writers in general (and even try to see the good in bucklemming episodes, because I love this show enough to make the effort worth it to me…)

I just finished 12.12 and i’m now lying on the floor, suffering.
Formal Complaint for 12.12:
mittensmorgul I'm suffering
mittensmorgul Dean fought off the Lance of Michael with a shovel, and it was pointed right at him while he was down... (it had already dealt a slow death blow to Cas), until Mary and Sam tag-teamed Ramiel and Sam turned the lance on him. Then Crowley broke it to save Cas.
I'm wondering if this is somehow metaphorical for the end of s13 in dealing with AU Michael mittensmorgul and the "One Last Thing" which we suspect is the Colt that links two scenes... but it's also TWO last things-- Mary working for Ketch and Crowley playing with fire (aka Lucifer)
elizabethrobertajones AAAAAH I am not a fan of this :P mittensmorgul I'm not either :P
hence my formal complaint posts

CLARIFICATION:
this is not the meta about clarification that I’ve been meaning to compile for the last two days, but haven’t scraped up the brainpower to actually write yet. No, this is an actual clarification. Because I am a fool. :P
In this post, I said some stuff and things about Dean’s cowboy knowledge, their chosen aliases, and the Tombstone references, but I can’t believe I missed this huge obvious WTF moment... because it’s huge...
Take Dean’s line here:
Dean: Pretty cool right? Dude, check it, check it out, check it out. Clay Allison, gun fighter extraordinaire, right. And, ah, Curly Bill Brocius, which no, no, no. Little fun fact here, was killed by Wyatt Earp himself. Not kidding. Johnny Ringo, Billy the Kid... Doc Holiday! Hey-oh!
But I have since learned a thing about the movie Tombstone, which Dean referred to explicitly in the “I’m your huckleberry” scene with Cas, and even chose all their aliases for this hunt as the actors who starred in that movie. He advised Cas to pretend they were in the movie while talking to the local cops.
But in the movie, it wasn’t Wyatt Earp (incidentally the character Dean based his alias of Kurt Russel on) who killed Curly Bill, it was Doc Holliday.
And I only think it’s relevant to point out and correct here because Doc Holliday delivered the “I’m your huckleberry” line to Curly Bill right before shooting him. Beating him in the duel that was SUPPOSED to have been between Curly Bill and Wyatt.
I have since been informed that the above scratched out bit is incorrect, that Doc delivered the line to Johnny Ringo, also identified by Dean in his little Cowboy History Gleefest, but that Wyatt was supposed to be the one dueling Ringo but because of Doc’s manipulation of the entire scenario, he prevented Wyatt from showing up on time (knowing that Ringo was a better gunfighter and would likely win against Wyatt), so that Doc could stand in for him (Doc was dying of tuberculosis anyway, and he knew he was the better gunfighter as well... and yeah, he won the duel).
But in real life, it really WAS Wyatt Earp who shot and killed Curly Bill. (Curly Bill had assassinated Wyatt’s brother Morgan, played by Bill Paxton in the movie, and the alias given to Jack on this hunt, just as an additional fun fact. So it really was “family business” for the Earps just like the hunt for Dave the Ghoul was “family business” for Sarge.)
The entire scenario in the movie was fictional. Dean’s knowledge of the REALITY of these historical people isn’t just based on movies. Remember how he got mocked for wearing his “blanket” in 6.18? Yeah, I think he’s spent some time in the interim reading up on the reality of the old west. He doesn’t just know the movie versions of events and circumstances.
I.e., Dean’s not confusing reality with porn here. :P
The way Davy Perez balanced out the fictional aspects of Tombstone by giving TFW 2.0 the aliases of the ACTORS portraying these characters and mirroring their “roles” to the events of the film, versus the actual “meat” of the case (pffft meat, because it was a ghoul...) and mirroring their reality to... reality... I am blown away yet again.

1/2 (While i do NOT ask this to be negative at all, i realize it could be a controversial topic so feel free not to answer!) I have a friend who stopped watching SPN a few years ago after, according to her, they jumped the shark to the point she just couldn't take the show seriously anymore. Now, i'm so deep in fandom it's hard to step back and be objective, but that's not the first time i've heard that complaint, and it got me thinking; obviously i love the show.
2/2 But it did make me casually wonder what keeps me coming back to it specifically, because ibr if any other show had made some of the same writing, plot, etc. choices as SPN has, i’d diagnose it with a serious case of the trope “seasonal rot” and move on. But i haven’t. And i think it’s because SPN is SO character driven. Like, these characters make the show and the genuine heart and love shows through in the writing. I think that’s what balances out the at times questionable quality for me.
Hi there. I just reblogged this post over here that mostly expresses my feelings about this:
http://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/160986841910/hey-i-stopped-watching-spn-like-during-season
I think it’s really not accurate (nor fair) to describe the character growth and narrative progression as “seasonal rot.” I think that’s sincerely missing the point.
From a podcast interview with Davy Perez shortly after 12.04 aired (Not About The Weather, episode 8):
(Sorry, y’all, I started transcribing this two hour long interview, spent two days transcribing the first hour last November, got to 7.5k, and haven’t had a chance to finish… )
N: It’s really interesting, because what you mentioned as well with Dean when he was living his sort of normal life with Lisa and Ben, it’s interesting as well because we’re six years on from that. So how do you look at that kind of thing and then go okay. How do you stop it being regressive, if you know what I mean? How do you go like, oh, he’s actually grown from that, or if he hasn’t or if he has. How do those decisions get made?
DP: For me I think it’s funny because I might have read it in a book somewhere, or maybe it was advice I got, in regards to writing television versus writing film. When you’re writing a film, you’re writing what is hopefully a complete journey, where a character gets called to action, where they go on their journey of discovery or their journey of tribulation, and then they arrive to an end point and you find, “Oh, I’ve learned this lesson,” or “I’ve grown so much.” And that was a satisfying, closed-ended story. Television doesn’t work that way. Television is about a character that you become invested in, and that you fall in love with. That character grows in incremental ways. Not only do they grow in tiny little increments, and sometimes don’t even grow, they go backwards. You don’t close the loop. You keep the loop open, so that hopefully when you know that okay, this is our final season, this is our final run of episodes, that’s when you can find those landing points, and that’s when you can sort of say this is the end of this journey. As far as having to imagine what Dean might be eight years ago, well all I can say is that’s who Dean is. There’s a well of knowledge to watch, and you can see that that’s who he is. Maybe they’ve grown in some small way. Maybe Sam can talk about the psychic stuff where maybe before he didn’t even want to talk about it, but he’s not a completely different Sam in that he’s learned from his mistakes and will never make the mistakes again. You want to make sure that you’re staying true to who they are, and allowing the characters to just live in those moments, and to of course grow and have that journey, but to really take time. In an essence you really enjoy those incremental growths and they mean so much more.
This is exactly what I’ve described as the “spiral narrative” where the same things come up over and over again, putting the characters in similar situations. But this has become a character-driven narrative. The mytharc is entirely secondary to what the characters are going through.
Playing “spot the difference” each time you see a “wait, that’s really familiar” moment is where you really SEE those incremental growths. This is not “seasonal rot.” I find myself irrationally offended on behalf of the writers here… like, got up and stormed around the house ranting out loud to myself.
So when meta writers talk about how the writers are doing all of this intentionally, we literally really truly do mean the writers are DOING THIS ALL INTENTIONALLY. They have even TOLD US THIS IS THE CASE IN ACTUAL WORDS.
I  wrote a thing recently that sort of touches on this a bit, that started out as a reply about character driven vs plot driven narratives, but I think it also goes a little way toward explaining some of the reasons why people are having difficulty understanding what the show is doing now:
http://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/159511693805/a-very-random-question-but-in-your-opinion-whats
If folks are still looking at the show as if it was actually a plot-driven narrative, there’s bound to be some sincere disappointment. But if you see it as a character-driven narrative, everything begins falling into place. I don’t mean to say that someone might be “watching wrong,” but if your impression is that the narrative is inconsistent and has made questionable plot choices, then I feel at least slightly obligated to politely suggest maybe watching it from THIS perspective and see if the entire picture doesn’t become perfectly clear.
Tumblr media
Like this sculpture illustrates, look at it from the wrong angle and it all seems random. It’s supposed to inspire you to walk around looking at it all from DIFFERENT angles until the entire picture clicks into place.
This is the amazing beauty of the story Supernatural is telling us right now. I just want as many people as possible to realize this, because I think a lot of people right now are just seeing the random scattershot dots and feeling like they aren’t telling us a full story… I’m just trying to drag as many people around to the other side, to see what it looks like from where I’m sitting. Because it looks like art to me.

Hi! So, does this mean that Sam has completed the first of the Trials for closing the gates of hell? Or does he have to intend to close them?
Hi there! I’ll start out with a few comments, and then I’ll try to answer this as best I can. First, I am in Downtown Migraineland right now. I apologize in advance for any weird incoherency in this reply…
(note from the future, i.e. nearly 4 hours after I started trying to piece this reply together: My migraine is gone, but this reply went into A LOT OF DETAIL about the parallels not only in this episode, but in all of s12. This ended up being really weird meta on what I think Dabb’s Grand Plan for the entire season is hinging on. IT IS LONG. Just a warning.)
I think a lot of s12 has been paralleling A LOT of the past, turning it inside out, applying it through a different lens or allowing characters to see these things from a different side, and resolving things in a better way.
That said, I think they’ve been referring back to the Demon Tablet Trials and the Angel Fall Spell (because the angel fall spell was a spell, not Trials. Metatron confirmed that). But all the elements of those things are being addressed in different ways, and paralleled to ~similar~ things happening in s12… I’m struggling to try and put this together in a linear narrative that even comes close to connecting all the dots. There’s SO MUCH going on in this episode, I’m not sure that’s really possible, but HECK I WILL TRY.
(second note from the future: this is about 3k long, so it’s going under a cut. THERE IS SO MUCH)
(i am typing this from the floor where I’m curled up around pictures of Andrew Dabb and Davy Perez while weeping gently)
(A/N: cut removed during the tumblr nippocalypse of 2018)
Let’s start our parallel journey with 8.14, Trial and Error. The episode that began with Dean reveling in his new room in the bunker, the fact he’s “nesting” (and one episode after he gloried in the shower room’s water pressure), where he glared daggers at Sam for tossing a gum wrapper on his floor while talking about how wonderful it was to live in a place with no weird stains or odd smells.
That ENTIRE script was flipped in the beginning of 12.15… Dean’s just covered in blood, sits right down on the furniture, drops Lucille (I’m calling it Lucille, but it’s got other relevant parallels I’ll get to in a sec…) on the library table while SAM is the one reacting to the “offense” that Dean’s presenting here– right down to the weird stains and gross smells.
*Necessary Digression #1
(aside to note that bit of siren he picked out of his hair sorta reminded me of Chuck pulling Castiel’s tooth out of his hair in 5.01… But those “back to back to back” hunts that Sam and Dean just got back from– a ghoul, a wraith, and a siren– ALSO HAVE HISTORY that really needs to be mentioned here…)
(see what I mean about this being impossible to address in a linear fashion?)
ghoul: 4.19. (written by Dabb fyi) Family/not family. that whole episode dealt with finding out about a deep family secret (the existence of Adam) that was all wrapped in a deceptive betrayal. Adam was already dead, being impersonated by a ghoul. Sam and Dean had been divided over whether to indoctrinated Adam into the hunting life for his own protection (Sam), or to keep him out of it entirely for his own protection (Dean). But in the end it was already too late. It had been a trap set for John, but Sam and Dean ended up tidying up the ghoul case that had led John to meet Adam’s mother in the first place. John had tried Dean’s approach (keeping Adam in the dark about the monsters for his own sake), and it hadn’t saved him. Frankly, if John HAD told Adam about the monsters, he might’ve been able to save himself.
6.10: Samuel attempts to feed Sam and Dean to a couple of ghouls (aah, the sweet bite of family betrayal)
6.16: Not exactly ghouls, but Bobby mentioned a “ghoul-wraith smorgasbord” as one of the unusual monster activity things that eventually led them to Eve. Also, that whole episode was about the monster inside (literally! Khan worm! possessed by monsters!) and family betrayal.
wraith: 5.11 (also written by Dabb): Sam and Dean get themselves committed to a mental hospital by telling the unvarnished truth about their lives (>.>) in order to help an old hunter friend of John’s. The wraith “poisons” both Sam and Dean, and even though they were perfectly “sane” when they entered the hospital, the wraith’s poison made them crazy.Made them fight against invisible monsters of their own mind’s creation. But Sam and Dean soon realized how they were being affected, fought through the illusions, and save themselves.
6.19: The “Jefferson Starships” that Eve was making (hybrid monsters combined of all sorts of different monster bits) had been part wraith. Dean let Eve DELIBERATELY bite/infect him with this monster mix because he’d already drunk the phoenix ash that would in turn poison HER. She just happened to be wearing Mary Winchester’s face while she did. Family (in a horrifically mutated fashion… basically a lie), monster possession. Dean finally turning the tables and turning HIMSELF into the weapon that killed Eve.
siren: 4.14. aah, the infamous siren episode. Love… and love. Deception, family betrayal, and a monster that feeds on lust. Dean believed (wrongly) that Sam had been infected, but really DEAN had been the one “seduced” by the siren– and his siren had not been a “hot chick.” It took Bobby interfering to slay the thing.
7.08: when Dean visits Sam and Becky at their apartment after their wedding, Dean accuses Sam of not acting like himself, and Becky gets defensive asking if Dean thinks she’s a witch, or a siren.
12.11: Sam tells Dean who’s lost his memories about some of the things they hunt, and Dean’s fascinated by the fact that sirens aren’t all “hot chicks”
AND I AM REALLY DYING TO KNOW IF THAT BIT OF SIREN IN DEAN’S HAIR WAS A HOT CHICK OR A DARK HAIRED, BLUE EYE’D DUDE.
*/digression #1- back to the point… for now
So here’s a list of the other relevant bits of 8.14 that were addressed in 12.15:
Hellhound glasses: I think we can all agree that we have been waiting years to see these things again.
multiple people attacked by hellhounds. in 8.14 they’d all sold their souls though. in 12.15 NEITHER Gwen nor her dead boyfriend did. That hellhound was deliberately released as a distraction by Crowley’s idiot minions so they could figure out what he was up to (and they found Lucifer chained up in Crowley’s secret room there)
so these people were attacked for NO REASON. They were innocent. They didn’t deserve to be attacked and killed just because they happened to be existing there >.> (sort of like the random monsters the BMoL intend to exterminate don’t deserve to die just for existing… but I digress, and will digress back to this point again in a bit…)
the goal in 8.14 was for Dean to kill the hellhound to start the trials, but SAM was the one who managed it in the end. The goal in 12.15 was for Dean and Crowley to hunt the hellhound while Sam protected Gwen (driving her off to safety in Baby)… but in the end it fell to Sam to kill the beast
the hellhound in 8.14 HAD BEEN CROWLEY’S. It answered to him. Now the hellhound in 12.15 ONLY ANSWERED TO LUCIFER. Basically, the Alpha hellhound. And instead of fighting against Crowley, Dean’s fighting alongside him while they both discuss how much they’ve changed. They’ve both moved a little more toward center– to that grey area where they’re both a little good and both a little bad like Meg and Cas in 8.17, but also Dean and Crowley have “rubbed off all over each other >.>
BUT HERE IS A KEY DIFFERENCE! Yes, Sam killed the hellhound and saved the “girl of the week,” BUT instead of it being the catalyst for him to behind hiding stuff from dean (the damage of the hell trials), it becomes the catalyst for him BEING HONEST with Dean… INVERSION!
Also, thinking back to 12.14 where Sam killed the Alpha Vampire, he’s now also killed the “Alpha Hellhound.”
*Necessary Digression #2:
back to 6.19 for a quick moment. Eve, mother of all the monsters. But apparently God created Hellhounds but considered them a failed experiment that he tried to wipe out, only to have Lucifer keep one for himself and twist it into the entire lineage of hellhounds we know. I’m trying to puzzle through the lot of this, now that Mary is clearly being paralleled to Ramsey the Hellhound, which lizbob and I are discussing in the chattybubbles:
The theme of the season is clearly motherhoodhow does she relate to Mary though :PI mean the whole pregnant thing makes it sound omre like Kelly
mittensmorgulyeah… but Mary “birthed” the entire plot of the series in more than one waythough none of it was actually her fault (like it wasn’t actually ramsey’s fault that she was let out of her cage)she was just doing what hellhounds dowhen they’re masterless
elizabethrobertajonestrueAnd this is the whole attack dog thingmary, Dean AND Cas all get it
mittensmorgulI am having shades of Eve (since she died wearing Mary’s face)
[…] where we talked about God having created the Hellhounds…
then again, he kept trying to create “monsters” to keep the world in balance. Every Apex species needs something to keep it in checkI think “Eve” was his balance there, creating the monsters to balance humanity
elizabethrobertajonesYeahand 12x14 discussed that as wellhow they’d been in balance
And Dean had unknowingly been on Sam’s BMoL leash the entire episode. All those “back to back to back” hunts that Dean came back from covered in blood, wielding “his father’s weapon.”
*Necessary Digression #3– and yes I’m aware we’re still mid-digression #2… bear with me here:
Dean apparently clobbered those three monsters mentioned above with a barbed-wire wrapped baseball bat that he said “Dad loved this thing” or whatever. Yes, haha, a reference to Negan. But that blunt, bloody instrument was also a major parallel to early s8– when Dean came back from Purgatory (that he referred to as “pure”) COVERED in the blood of all sorts of monsters, while Sam remained “clean.” That baseball bat made a nice stand-in for Dean’s purgatory weapon, no?
Dean telling Sam about his time in Purgatory, describing it as 360 degree combat, cutting a bloody swath through every monster in the place…
And Sam hit a dog.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE IN 12.14!!!
Sam is taking Dean out on all these bloody hunts and hiding stuff about the source here. Meanwhile Sam’s hanging out with a veterinarian (student… close enough), but instead of hitting the dog, THE DOG HIT HIM. Literally, jumped all over Baby.
So going right back to the beginning of s8, i.e. the part of the story where Sam and Dean began to think that they could change the entire world to make it “safer,” to stop the supernatural from even existing on Earth (by slamming the gates of hell, altering the entire balance of nature).
BUT THIS TIME IT’S HAPPENING IN A DIFFERENT WAY.
The BMoL are trying the same sort of cosmic adjustment, committing monster genocide in the name of “the greater good” that got Sam and Dean wrapped up in four years of “cosmic consequences” that they’re only NOW beginning to recover from.
Sam nearly dying, the angel fall, Cas losing his grace, shoving Gadreel down Sam’s gullet, Metatron destroying heaven, Dean taking on the Mark… right down the line to releasing the Darkness and then reconciling Amara and Chuck to balance and save the universe.
I mean, Dabb is just killing me with what he’s doing here. I’ve now been working on this reply for the last 3 hours…
mittensmorgulI am STILL working on my first ask message, where I’m tryin gto sort through ALL the pies he[’s got his fingers in…
elizabethrobertajonessort of belatedly realisinghe’s genuinely got a finger in ever freakin’ pie in the show
elizabethrobertajonesDabb JUST tying up his OWN loose endsis actually tidying up the ENTIRE show
mittensmorgulthis is a turducken wrapped in a piecaken wrapped in a croissookie
elizabethrobertajonesDabb era is season 4 - presenthahahahahais that your new Dabb era tag
mittensmorgulshould beto think i had reduced it to just a linzer torteit’s everything
elizabethrobertajonesyeah
mittensmorgulJust as I typed that, Rowena on screen said “It’s MEGA.”
*/digression #3
*back to digression #2
*actually, let’s end digression #2 here as well…
Imma try to stay on point from here on out. Let’s see how well I do…
This isn’t about restarting the trials. This isn’t about recreating the angel fall spell. This is all about going back to revisit these things that ended up being Cosmic Consequences™ level MISTAKES. Giving everyone a chance to face these things again, in a different way, and make better choices. They’re in the process of finding another way.
The last little bit of my chat with lizbob might give you an idea of where I think this season is headed, and it all boils down to love… and love. (edited a bit because REALLY LONG and rambly, and there was a lot of “yeah” and “huh” sorts of comments through here…):
elizabethrobertajones: Joshua seems nice and all but God related to him as a gardner just as he related to Metatron as a writer
mittensmorgul: after he locked up the darkness, he was trying to create that balance on his own, but he really lacked the finesse to do it properly
elizabethrobertajones: Hm. and the writing is controlling the narrative on a BIG scale
elizabethrobertajones: gardening, if you were controlling the world, would be clipping it into shape. like just tidying it up taking out some weeds. like say… eliminating all monsters
mittensmorgul: but if we’re about balance and finding better ways, and Chuck’s still talking to Joshua… now that he’s reunited with Amara maybe things CAN be better now?hopefully?
mittensmorgul: BUT CHUCK SAID THAT DEAN WAS THE ONE CARRYING THE STORY NOW
elizabethrobertajones: don’t know if Joshua is still talking to God :Pyeah
mittensmorgul: he put the earth in DEAN’S hands
elizabethrobertajones: Dean gets to decide what happens and he doesn’t approve >.>
mittensmorgul: Dean’s the gardener now. I think he likes the weeds
elizabethrobertajones: And he tends to the garden in the traditional ways which WORK and keep a good sort of peacehe relates to the weedsknows some dandelions can be pretty
mittensmorgul: he thinks he’s one of the weeds
elizabethrobertajones: no need to rip them ALL upyeah >.>poor Dean
mittensmorgul: heck, most of the “weeds” are food for the beesbalance
elizabethrobertajones: CAS SAW IT ALLback in 7x21the whole planit was perfect
mittensmorgul: yepAnd Chuck CONVENIENTLY left Cas out of his description to Dean about the world being left in his hands (and Sam’s)BUT CAS HADN’T FIGURED OUT HIS PLACE YETHe’s still struggling to figure it outBUT WE ALL KNOW HIS PLACE IS WITH THE WINCHESTERS
elizabethrobertajones: yeah
mittensmorgul: He’s the third piece of the triptych here
elizabethrobertajones: he loves themdone dealwell he needs a sense of HOMEand he’s already done the whole I love you thinglike
mittensmorgul: Dean’s the firewall, sam and cas are the two sides
elizabethrobertajones: what else needs to happen
mittensmorgul: love… and love
elizabethrobertajones: (marriage propsal)
mittensmorgul: yep
elizabethrobertajones: like the next big step :Phe’s already platonically embedded in the familywhat’s the next motivation to live with them and call them home if the question is STILL OPENAFTEr that
mittensmorgul: he’s still trying to figure out what family and FAMILY mean to himhence his trip back to heaven
So onward to Sam’s battle with the TRUTH, and how it relates to veterinarians and dogs he’s hit (or who have hit him).
Well, this time around, the dog hit HIM. The veterinarian knows part of the story. She knows the monsters are out there, but she very specifically does not know certain things… like… she thinks Crowley seemed “nice.” Pffft
BUT SHE ALSO STEPPED UP AND SAVED SAM in more ways than one. First her speech about honesty, and how it was her deception (that she loved her boyfriend) that had gotten him killed. If she’d only told him the truth, they wouldn’t have been out there camping together where the monster found them. Instead of just breaking his heart, she now feels like she has his blood on her hands, which is a far worse sort of guilt.
When she finally confessed the truth to Sam, she was able to take back her agency. She saved Sam, whacking the hellhound with the green cooler.
*gives props to the props* the green cooler saves the day! :P
Sam lost his glasses in this fight, too. He was fighting blind, against an invisible enemy he could only really see by following its tracks in the dust.
And the episode ends in a tidy inversion of how it began. (pffft, tidy…)
SAM is now covered in blood, and Dean is clean.
Now Sam has his chance to “come clean” with Dean.
Sure, Dean doesn’t know everything yet, but the image is coming more into focus. Sam and Dean are getting closer to being on the same page here.
(also, Mick is in Sam’s phone as Frodo, while Mary had the MoL in hers as “hobbits.” I’m sensing a theme here)
Sam had been lying to Dean about where all their hunts were coming from, essentially leaving Dean in the “hellhound on a leash” role. But now that Sam has told him the truth, Dean can cut that leash. He’s not just the attack dog anymore.
There may still be truths that need to come out, but at least Sam and Dean are nearly back to a level playing field here:
Dean: What do you want me say? Do I like it? No. Do I trust them? Hell no. But you’re right. We work with people we don’t trust all the time. Hell, I just Liam Neeson’d it up with Crowley. So, if you wanna give this a shot, then fine. But the minute, and I mean the second, something feels off, we bail.
Kinda makes me wonder what Dean might feel was “off” enough to follow through…
Finding out Ketch killed Magda? Finding out the truth about the Colt? Learning about the Monster Genocide Agenda? Or maybe just seeing behind the curtain that Sam saw through about just how incompetent the MoL’s intel really is…
Dean’s already seen their “attack dog” in action (Ketch), and he was not impressed. Now that Dean’s been let off his leash and been given part of the truth like a PERSON with AGENCY, and is able to make his own choices based on the fact that their info is coming from the MoL, I wonder if he’ll start piecing all of those sketchy details together for himself.
I have a feeling he’s gonna have a BAD feeling right quick…
