Crozier and Fitzjames' Dialogue during their off-screen fight in episode 5, from Dave K Q&A 3
James: “We both know what is happening with you and I came to discuss it, as a friend!”
Francis: “That word is alien here! You don’t have friends, James, you have admirers. That I am not one has always chafed you!”
James: “Don’t sell me a dog about this, Francis! You are caught in the grip of this and it’s coopered you out. It’s made you dennis, man!”
Francis: “I am out of words for you!” (Dave K: Which is a really handy line in, I think, any marriage.)
James: “Do you think it was possible to hide this from a ship full of seamen? Most of whom share this affliction on land?”
Francis: “You’re a miserable man. A miserable poltroon of a man, James.”
James: “You’re going to name it, by God. How must I do to get the word out of you? Hound you? Call you out? I will do!”
They did film the scene (iirc) but they didn't keep it in because Dave thought it would falter next to the "Do you plan on being the worst kind of first as well?" and Francis hitting James in front of people.

so so so glad you mentioned bones and all in the post about cannibalism, i feel like it's been looped in the whole "cannibalism as a metaphor for love" train and i truly do feel like it's simply not that (or at least not entirely) especially if you take into account the original book and the author
it is definitely not that!! and here's the thing i'm never gonna berate people for interpreting art how they want if there's basis for it (i mean the movie at least is a love story after all), but maren and lee fall in love in spite of the fact that they're eaters. obviously they meet each other because of it, but cannibalism and the fact that they have to do it to survive is a huge point of contention in their relationship. obviously at the end, it is cannibalism as love because lee makes that sacrifice, but the point isn't that maren is eating him because she loves him--she's actively trying to stop herself from doing it. throughout the whole movie cannibalism is posited as this imbalance of power and violence, predatory and creepy. the only instance in which it's "love" is at the end. so when people group in bones and all with this trend, it's partially true, but it flattens out everything the movie is commentating on throughout.
secondly, i had the privilege of seeing camille deangelis and dave kajganich in conversation at like the second or third screening ever a few months before it came out (yeah i'll flex that, this is my favorite movie after all lol), and there camille discussed how she wanted to write a book about cannibalism as vegan literature, but she never felt the book was a strong enough metaphor, but that dave really brought it out in the movie--you can tell in scenes like the slaughterhouse, the discussion maren and lee have about killing people and stealing their stuff (ie. not just meat but animal products), and of course, the fact that lee consents to being eaten, in the end. there are other subtexts at play too of course, but this is a big one that people overlook because it's not a common theme in movies. in fact i don't think i would have picked it out had it not been for that author-screenwriter talk. now i'm not vegan or anything, but it is a compelling thesis for sure!

So as faithful fiction readers know, I haven’t written anything in a long time…
To get out of this drought, I decided to write a movie review. Not exactly fiction, but still writing. In my book that counts as progress!
Tumblr media
If you are interested, please check out Bones and All and Salvatore: A queer perspective on the latest from Luca Guadagnino.
There ARE spoilers from both films in my review, so don’t read if you haven’t seen BAA.
Thanks, in advance, for your support! 💜

i have been waiting for years to know what Francis and Fitzjames yell at each other and the fact it involves the word POLTROON is just too much to handle

it is interesting listening to dave k talk about the director of e7–10 and how they really preferred these long, single takes bc i am currently giffing e7 and have noticed how few cuts there are in scenes.

The book interviews continue! Tomorrow I chat with the one and only Dave Kajganich, creator of The Terror! As if this weren’t enough, John Lynch will be joining our zoom call. I think he may have been my first crush when a wee 7 year old Loki saw The Secret Garden for the first time. I’m so excited I may explode. I’ve got lots of questions and I can’t wait to include them in the book!

Just watched some of Dave K's Terror Q/A and the sweater and gloves Crozier wears in ep9/10 are indeed James'. The service Francis metioned was after he gave James the liquid but before James died. James' death scene was intentionally ("100%") technically filmed like a love/sex scene: as few crew members as possible and giving them privacy.
Also, Hartnell's body was taken by Hickey's camp and Francis was bleeding because he tried to stop them, so they beat him up. Hartnell (and Fitzjames) were probably eaten, but they didn't use the scene so that Hartnell's death wouldnt be reduced in meaning.

i love when you watch a network tv show off network because you get to see where the commercial breaks would be and idk. something about it is just fun to imagine what you would do if there was a commercial right there

i’m listening to the 4th q&a with dave kajganich...does anyone know or remember what question dave asked as a poll when answering drac’s question about hodgson?
dave doesn’t read the poll question out loud, just the options (yes or no) and indicates that it’s something “not a lot of people thought of” and “kind of an important part of how he answers question”. dave indicated that 59% of people answered yes and 41% answered no...but i have no idea what the question was and it’s kind of killing me 😂
(the only thing i can think is, did hodgson eat the dog meat or not? but i just want to know for sure)
