Another episode of Nobody is Moving On is brought to us today by Movieweb and frankly by that fox Luca for yet more discussion on Challengers and references to Call Me By Your Name.
Special bonus reference by the maestro here:
Just casually dropping in a reference to the Social Network. As you do. 🚲🩳🕶️🍑❤️😎
i watched cmbyn for the first time today and this is just gonna be a bunch of my random thoughts and possibly not make sense but oh my god???? what a life changing masterpiece of a film (i put off watching it for so long bc i knew it would destroy me and i do in fact feel numb now).
the mise-en-scene and cinematography is just gorgeous. the sound design, the setting (obviously), all of the little ambient noises and the classical pieces and sufjan stevens fiejfiekvjeijr
i noticed how early in like the first 40 ish minutes, Elio is physically large in frame and Oliver is smaller (like at the WW1 monument/statue for example), as if Oliver is out of Elio’s reach and he hasn’t yet entered his life or his heart. Then at the end of that scene and in the following ones (them riding bikes side by side) they’re equal size in frame like they’re catching up to each other, like they’re falling into place as they fall in love.
and all the motifs of vouyerism and looking and the gaze and touching as a medium of not just affection or intimacy but knowing someone (“do you hide who you really are?” “no, not with you”) i can’t. fucking. handle. it. it’s so beautiful, it made me feel more for a romance on screen than i had in such a long long time. the agony when Oliver disappears on Elio after their first kiss and the uncertainty, the distance, and then that intense comfort when they’re finally together again, it just makes you feel warm inside (and the absolutely heartbreaking ending and that speech from Elio’s dad that i had heard before watching it). they’re so incredibly human. they’re flawed (Elio using Marzia for escapism and distraction, but also their friendship being real before, during, and after Oliver. i loved how they made up near the end). the dialogue and the body language and the directing all reflect such an element of realism, it’s hard not to feel like these are real people. everyone who made this film is so talented and now i’m probably gonna be compelled to read the book as well. ughdhfjsjdneodk i’m not going to get over this for a long time
...Every now and then it's good to revisit this, and consider how rare it is for an art form to just abruptly be dragged into a new century in front of a significant portion of the planet.
