This month’s thematic focus will be on Death and Defiance — in memory of the incredible anti-zionist, lesbian activist, nurse, and death educator Shatzi Weisberger who passed on earlier this week, I want to highlight the movements and subjects she was devoted to. Big Fish (2003) dir. Tim Burton — not sure how well this holds up but it has been a very cathartic watch for me in the past as I have processed deaths and losses.

Die Beautiful (2016) dir. Jun Robles Lana — a non linear narrative focused on a trans person? all my faves fit this bill so i’m looking forward to seeing this one for the first time along with yall. it is a series of vignettes as eulogy for the main character, Trisha — a trans woman who’s last wish is that she be made up as different celebrities for each night of her wake.

Farha (2021) dir. Darin J. Sallam — a recent release based on the harrowing experiences of a real Palestinian family during the beginning of the Nakba in 1948. (This is currently being review bombed super hard by petty zionists so I highly recommend watching and reviewing)

I have a memory stick that I use for listening to music to in the car. The songs play alphabetically and recently I noticed that it took a REALLY long time to get through songs starting with the word "don't". Like to work and back. More than once.

The first time i talked to the baby, the music:

6:38 lonnie's lament, john coltrane: at this point, he helped me put two and two together and understand that he was what I saw moving in the closet in February 2020, and that he was hiding in the Brooklyn apartment while I went into hiding in Yonkers.

For 8 months.

Can you imagine being a 7 year old hiding in an infested apartment for 8 months?

This was one of the hardest things for me to come to terms with. Every time he tells me a story, I Understand better, but my jaw usually hangs open. Out of sadness and utter disbelief.

It was months before I realized that all the baby blue references were about his psychic/psychological state. At this point, he just likes to be called Blue. It's been kind of fascinating to learn to listen to what he's trying to say.

Kreative Gesellschaft veröffentlicht die Apokalypse 2036 - Unterstützt der Rotary Club diese Verschwörungssekte?

Der Rotary Club hat am 15.Oktober 2022 in einem Internationalen Meeting einen verheerenden Bericht der Kreativen Gesellschaft über den Zustand unserer Erde veröffentlicht.  Demzufolge stehen wir kurz vor einer Katastrophe globalen Ausmaßes. Die einzige Möglichkeit den Planeten vor dem drohenden Untergang zu retten ist - aus Sicht der Rotarier - die Bildung einer Kreativen Gesellschaft. 

Was sind Rotarier? Der erste Rotary Club wurde 1905 in Chicago von Rechtsanwalt Paul Harris gemeinsam mit drei anderen Geschäftsleuten gegründet. Die Idee einer Gemeinschaft von Berufsleuten fand bald weltweiten Anklang. Die ersten Clubs in Österreich und der Schweiz wurden 1925 gegründet. Mittlerweile gibt es weltweit mehr als 34.000 Clubs mit über 1.200.000 Mitglieder. Davon mehr als 1000 Clubs im deutschsprachigen Raum.  Zu den internationalen Mitgliedern zähl(t)en sowohl US-Präsidenten wie Dwight D. Eisenhower, Henry Ford, Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan oder George Bush als auch Britische Premiers wie Winston Churchill, Margret Thatcher und Chamberlain. Ebenso Royals wie z.B. Charles III, Carl XVI Gustav aus Schweden, Hassan II. aus Marokko als auch Philanthropen wie Bill Gates. Rotary bildet ein weltweit aktives, sozial engagiertes Netzwerk. Das Rotary-Verfahrenshandbuch aus dem Jahr 2001 beschreibt eine Weltgemeinschaft von Berufsleuten. Der Wahlspruch der Rotarier lautet: Service above self (selbstloses Dienen).

Das Ziel von Rotary besteht darin, das Ideal des Dienens als Grundlage des Geschäfts- und Berufslebens zu fördern, indem seine Mitglieder: - freundschaftliche Beziehungen entwickeln, um sich anderen nützlich zu erweisen - hohe ethische Grundsätze im Geschäfts- und Berufsleben verwirklichen, den Wert jeder nützlichen Tätigkeit anerkennen und die berufliche Tätigkeit jedes Rotariers als Möglichkeit zum Dienst an der Gesellschaft würdigen - das Dienstideal in der privaten, beruflichen und öffentlichen Tätigkeit jedes Rotariers verwirklichen - Völkerverständigung und Frieden durch eine im Ideal des Dienens vereinte Weltgemeinschaft aus beruflich erfolgreichen Frauen und Männern fördern. – Rotary über Rotary Doch nicht nur die Rotarier unterstützen die Endzeitsekte Kreativen Gesellschaft, auch andere namhafte Organisationen und Firmen wie die City of London, der Vatikan oder Google Digital Garage sind Partner dieser NGO. Diese Gemeinschaft, in der auch tausende hochrangige Wissenschaftler zu finden sind, haben nun eine Lösung gefunden um die im Jahr 2036 drohende Apokalypse zu verhindern. Some of my favourite musicians are Celtic Woman, Capercailie, Karliene Reynolds, Postmodern Jukebox, Cecile Corbel, Kate Bush, Caro Emerald, Bobby Darin, Aoi Teshima, The High Kings, Loreena McKennit, Peggy Lee, Doris Day and Dinah Shore. 14. Dream trip: I'd like to go back to a lot of places 😅 But I haven't been to Canada, Australia or New Zealand yet and there's still so many places in Europe and the US I want to visit. Die Verdammten dieser Erde in Syrien und Bangladesch, in Osttimor und Südafrika verehren Diego Maradona als einen der Ihren

Diego Armando Maradona war ein genialer Fußballkünstler - und der erste Superstar, der sich mit den mafiösen Fifa-Funktionären und den TV-Konzernen anlegte. 1986 protestierte er erfolglos gegen die Vorgabe, in der brennenden Mittagshitze Mexikos spielen zu müssen. 1995, ein Jahr nach seinem umstrittenen Doping-Rauswurf bei der WM in den USA, gründete er zusammen mit Éric Cantona und George Weah eine internationale Fußballer-Gewerkschaft, zu der bald der Belgier Jean-Marc Bosman hinzustieß.

In Argentinien ist der Medienwirbel um »el Diego« auch nach seinem einsamen Tod und der dreitägigen, von Polizeigewalt und politischem Streit überschatteten Staatstrauer noch lange nicht vorbei. Dabei wird leicht übersehen, dass sich »nur« gut zwei Drittel der Argentinier*innen mit Maradona identifizieren, dem »menschlichsten aller Götter« (Eduardo Galeano). Die allermeisten linken Feministinnen jedenfalls reklamieren den »Kämpfer voller Widersprüche« für sich und ihre Sache, dessen wohlbekannte Macho-Fehltritte erklären sie mit dem System des Patriarchats.

Der Junge aus dem Armenviertel Villa Fiorito war von Geburt an dem Peronismus verbunden und ebenso irrlichternd wie diese volksnahe, ideologisch sehr breite Bewegung. In den 1990er Jahren zeigte er sich gerne zusammen mit dem neoliberalen Staatschef Carlos Menem, seit 2003 war er Kirchnerist. 2005 verhinderten Néstor Kirchner, Lula da Silva und Hugo Chávez im argentinischen Seebad Mar del Plata unter dem Jubel der sozialen Bewegungen die gesamtamerikanische Freihandelszone ALCA. Emir Kusturica hat in seiner Punk-Doku die Begeisterung im Stadion eingefangen, wo Hunderttausende Chávez, Evo Morales und Maradona mit seinem Anti-Bush-T-Shirt zujubelten. Der südamerikanische Linksruck verdichtete sich in Mar del Plata in einem magischen Moment.

Noch im Oktober, kurz vor seinem 60. Geburtstag, kreuzte der Fußballgott in den sozialen Netzwerken mit dem rechtsliberalen Ex-Präsidenten Mauricio Macri die Klingen. In den Luxusvierteln der Reichen rümpfte man über ihn die Nase. Im imaginären Volks-Pantheon Argentiniens jedenfalls bekommt er einen Ehrenplatz zwischen Evita und Che Guevara.

In Europa kam kaum ein Nachruf, angefangen bei Emmanuel Macron, ohne die obligatorische Distanzierung von Castro oder Chávez aus - so, als hätte Maradona politisch nicht alle Tassen im Schrank gehabt. Welch ein Irrtum: Wie für Millionen in aller Welt waren die beiden für ihn ganz handfeste Symbole des Widerstands gegen den US-Imperialismus. Zudem war der »Líder Máximo« bereits 1987 für ihn zur Vaterfigur geworden, 2000 rettete ihm eine lange Kur auf Kuba das Leben.

Mit seinen beiden einzigartigen Toren gegen England bei der WM 1986, vier Jahre nach dem Malwinen-Krieg, hat sich Diego Maradona selbst als antikolonialer Rebell verewigt. Vor allem die »Hand Gottes« wurde in Irland und Indien, bei schwarzen Aktivist*innen in London oder Lagos, als Rache am Empire gefeiert. Kein Wunder also, dass heute unzählige »Verdammte dieser Erde« in Syrien und Bangladesch, in Osttimor und Südafrika um Diego Maradona trauern.

Die Jahre beim SSC Neapel (1984-92) brachten den längsten sportlichen Höhenflug und den ersten dramatischen Kokain-Absturz - Maradona war nicht der erste Star, der vom Ruhm überwältigt wurde. Es bleiben die Triumphe und Titel gegen die Bonzenklubs aus Mailand oder Turin, mit denen er ganz Süditalien beschenkte. Als die Argentinier 1990 ausgerechnet in Neapel den Gastgebern den Einzug ins WM-Finale verwehrten, hatte Maradona die Napoli-Ultras auf seiner Seite.

In diesem Sinne war er der Muhammad Ali der Globalisierung, anmutiger Künstler in der Arena, aber auch wortgewandt, maß- und kompromisslos, politisch inkorrekt und ja, authentisch. »Ich bin ein Schwarzköpfchen (so nennt man in Argentinien die Menschen aus einfachen Verhältnissen, GD), habe nie meine Herkunft verleugnet«, sagte »el Diego« einmal. Oder: »Ja, ich bin links, ganz links, von Kopf bis Fuß, im Glauben. Aber nicht so, wie ihr in Europa das definiert. Ich will das Leben der Armen verbessern, dass wir alle Frieden und Freiheit haben«. Schließlich: »Wenn Pelé Beethoven ist, dann bin ich Ron Wood, Keith Richards und Bono, alle zusammen«.

Der Tod Diego Maradonas hat Diskussionen wieder aufleben lassen. Diskussionen darüber, ob man Maradona mögen kann, obwohl er in seinen persönlichen Beziehungen Gewalt gegen Frauen ausgeübt hat. In Argentinien, wo Maradona Nationalheld ist, und wo nach dessen Tod drei Tage Staatstrauer angeordnet wurden, wird diese Debatte schon länger geführt. Wir veröffentlichen hier in Übersetzung einen Text des feministischen Medienkollektivs marcha, zum 60. Geburtstag von Maradona, am 30. Oktober 2020. Der Text ist für die deutsche Version redaktionell leicht bearbeitet worden.

Heute wird Diego Armando Maradona 60 Jahre alt, und in dieser bescheidenen Würdigung grüßen wir ihn von unseren Feminismen, die popular und maradonianas sind.

Dies wird die erste – und letzte – Notiz sein, in der wir Erklärungen zu unseren Gefühlen und Entscheidungen geben werden. Für uns ist der Feminismus viel mehr als eine Sache im Kampf um bestimmte Rechte. Für uns ist Feminismus eine Art, unser Leben zu betrachten, zu lieben, zu genießen und zu leben. Und unser Leben ist nichts anderes als permanente Widersprüche, weshalb wir mit den folgenden Worten einige Überlegungen zu diesen Gefühlen, Entscheidungen und Widersprüchen anstellen, um zu bekräftigen, was wir sind: feministisch, popular und maradonianas.

Wir vergessen nicht die Gewalt, die er gegen viele Frauen ausgeübt hat, wir sind uns darüber im Klaren, und wir wissen, was Teil der Gesellschaft und der Zukunft ist, für die wir kämpfen: dass männlich sein nicht bedeutet, Privilegien zu haben oder Gewalt gegen den Körper von Frauen auszuüben. Dass männlich sein, keine Frage von Macht oder körperlicher Stärke ist. Aber inmitten von so viel Lärm, der die Stimmen der Armen übertönt, vergessen wir nicht, dass Diego und sein Fußball immer gen Süden ausgerichtet waren. Er war seit seiner Geburt durch diesem Stern gezeichnet und wusste immer genau, woher er kam und wohin er zielen wollte: Er kam aus dem Schlamm und vergaß seine Herkunft nie, das Klassenbewusstsein schmiedete ihn an den Stellen, an denen er seine Kunst mit dem Ball perfektionierte, und mit den Vergessenen machte er den Fußball zur Bühne, um das Unsichtbare sichtbar zu machen.

Wenn wir über Diego sprechen, sprechen wir über das Volk, das ihn immer begleitet hat, nicht nur wegen seiner Spielzüge, sondern auch, weil sich die Armenviertel in seiner Rebellion und seinen Entscheidungen sahen. Er war in der Lage, diesem Fabrik-Fußball den Rücken zu kehren, wie als er Barcelona verließ, um einer Mannschaft aus Süditalien, dem großen Neapel, Ruhm zu verschaffen und den Reichen des Nordens, dem mächtigen Juventus von Platini, dem mächtigen Mailand von Berlusconi die Hegemonie zu nehmen; Diego stellte sich gegen die Mächtigsten und trug seine Stimme aus dem Kollektiv heraus.

Er rebellierte gegen die Maschinerie und die multinationalen Konzerne FIFA und Conmebol, weil er das Spiel der Mächtigen nicht akzeptierte. Der Preis war hoch: Es waren dieselben mächtigen Leute, die ihm bei der Weltmeisterschaft 1994 die Beine genommen haben, und wir alle haben darunter gelitten. Doch Diego hat seine Lektion nicht gelernt; sein Ungehorsam bestand darin, sich gegen die Blockade Kubas zu stellen, die bolivarische Revolution in Venezuela zu unterstützen, mit Evo Fußball zu spielen und sich für den Frieden in Kolumbien einzusetzen, immer dann, wenn die Stimmen leiser waren. Die Teilnahme an der Nationalmannschaft steht seit einigen Jahren für die Spielermillionäre zudem oft nicht im Vordergrund. Die finanziellen Interessen an den Partien ihrer Klubs sind zu vielfältig, als dass sie diese abbrechen könnten. Und da kehrt Diego in einem Bild von Italien 1990 zurück: Vor den Kameras die Niederlage einer Weltmeisterschaft beweinend, die er physisch nur zur Hälfte gespielt hat.

Aber wir, die Autorinnen dieses Artikels, sind nicht die Einzigen, die sich in unserer Liebe zu Maradona geoutet haben. Deshalb fügen wir andere Stimmen hinzu, die uns helfen, Widersprüche auf den Tisch zu legen, ohne unsere Vergangenheit, unser Aufwachsen und unsere Leidenschaften zu verschweigen, die nur schwer in eine Handvoll Wörter passen.

Es ist für mich unvorstellbar, an eine Welt ohne Maradona zu denken, wie es für mich unvorstellbar ist, an eine Welt ohne Feminismus zu denken.

Monica Santino ist ehemalige Fußballspielerin aus dem Armenviertel Villa 31, und sagt uns:

Ich weiß nicht, warum man ständig erklären muss, warum man jemanden liebt. Man liebt jemanden für das, was er tut, für das, was er bedeutet. Und alles, was er bedeutet, ging über den Fußballplatz und das Spielfeld hinaus, denn er war ein Mensch, der in der Lage war, wie kaum ein anderer Gefühle zu vermitteln. Der Fußball erzeugt das, er bringt dich dazu, jemanden zu umarmen, den du nicht kennst, wenn deine Mannschaft ein Tor schießt. Fußball lässt einen tief weinen, er macht einem Freude, die manchmal unvorstellbar oder übertrieben ist. Und Maradona ist Fußball und Maradona ist all das.

Maradona ist ein Mensch, der nie vergisst, woher er kommt, was seine Herkunft ist und worauf er stolz ist. Das ist ein Punkt der Nähe zu einer sozialen Bewegung wie dem Feminismus, der die Welt verändern will. Und Maradona versucht auf seine eigene Art und Weise, manchmal auch als Macho, die Welt zu verändern. Wir haben also mehr gemeinsam als uns trennt. Und dann sind da natürlich noch die Widersprüche, aber sie sind Teil des Lebens und des Spiels selbst.

Es ist für mich unvorstellbar, an die Welt ohne Maradona zu denken, wie es für mich unvorstellbar ist, an die Welt ohne Feminismus zu denken. Das eine mit dem anderen in Widerspruch zu setzen, als ob man als Feministin Maradona nicht lieben kann, ist es nicht der Feminismus, den ich mag oder an dem ich teilnehmen möchte. Es ist auch nicht der Feminismus als ein Werkzeug, das ich benutze, um mein eigenes Leben und das der Menschen um mich herum zu verändern: einfach eine gerechtere Welt, in der es keine Unterdrückung gibt. Und davon hat Maradona eine Menge.

Ich bin mardoniana, ich bin Feministin, ich bin lesbisch, ich komme aus Buenos Aires und ich liebe das ganze Land. Ich bin Peronistin und habe die zehn Jahre Menemismus gehasst. Red.] Ich bin all das, wie die meisten von uns: ein Meer von Widersprüchen, die uns lebendig machen, niemals um nur zu essen, zu schlafen und fernzusehen, sondern alles zu verbrennen und zu verändern, wie es Diego in all seinen Jahren als Spieler getan hat, und heute mit seinen 60 Jahren tut.

Bedeutet eine Feministin zu sein, unsere Geschichten, unsere Reisen, das, was uns einst vor Emotionen beben ließ, auslöschen zu müssen?

Wer wäre ich ohne die erhobene Faust Diegos? Ohne das trostlose Weinen, den Aufbau einer Mystik des Teams und des Volkes… ohne das rasende Herz, wenn sich die Muskeln seiner Beine in dem Moment anspannten, als sein Fuß den Ball berührte und sie zu tanzen begannen… Ich bin Feministin und lebe mit vielen Widersprüchen und erkenne auch Fehler an, meine eigenen und die der anderen. Er hat mich dazu gebracht, Fußball zu lieben. Und er ist nicht Gott, er ist ein Mann, der neben Ruhm auch Elend hatte und hat; er ist Teil dieser beschissenen Kultur, die einen aufrichtet und mit der gleichen Kraft erdrückt, die den Männern beibringt, dass wir ihr “Privateigentum” sind, dass sie alle Privilegien und wenig Verantwortung haben, außer denen, die von den Räumen der Macht vorgegeben sind. Ich bin Feministin und maradoniana, denn wenn ich ihn sehe, umarmt mich meine Kindheit.

Natürlich reizt mich sein Fußball und dass er immer auf der Seite der Unterdrückten steht. Als ich ihn spielen und reden sah, träumte ich davon, so zu sein wie er: auf dem Spielfeld so zu spielen, und dann rauszugehen und die Dinge zu sagen, die er sagte. Er ist ein Schöpfer, er hat uns über den Fußball eingeladen, über neue und gerechtere Welten nachzudenken. Er ist Gold und Ton zugleich.

Und auf dieser Tour fanden wir einen Text, der uns herausfordert und uns zum Weiterdenken anregte. Deshalb fügen wir noch Maia Moreira, vom Club Lanús (von dem sie ein Fan ist), mit ihrem Text hinzu: Maradoneana und Feministin: die Reihenfolge der Elemente ändert nichts am Ergebnis, im Portal La pelota siempre al Diez, wo sie uns unter anderem sagt:

Es gibt so viele Feminismen wie Feministinnen, deshalb möchte ich den Feminismus, den ich lebe, von einigen Themen aus definieren, die ich für grundlegend halte. Eins davon ist, diese Annahme zu widerlegen, die die Gegensätze Feministin und Maradoniana zu sein auf absurde Weise kennzeichnet.

(…) Wie so viele andere baue ich mein Leben um meine Vorlieben herum auf. Ich bin glücklich wenn ich daran denke, dass – wie ich von Diego und dem Feminismus gelernt habe – ich dieses Gefühl mit den Gefühlen tausender Genossinen teile, die sich ebenfalls eine bessere und gerechtere Realität wünschen: eine egalitärere Welt. Für mich hat die feministische Militanz viel mit diesem Teamgeist zu tun, den ich in Diego immer latent sehe. Ich denke, dass Maradona immer in dieser Mischung, die das Populäre und das Akademische zusammenbringt, präsent ist und dass er viele von uns mit der perfekten Ausrede gefunden hat: Fußball. Eine Ausrede, die wir auch als Werkzeug benutzen, um diese Welt, in der wir gleiche Rechte haben, Wirklichkeit werden zu lassen.

Als Feministin möchte ich nicht, dass wir vergessen, wo wir herkommen, ich möchte, dass wir unsere Unterschiede sehen und anerkennen, dass uns Ungerechtigkeit schmerzt, dass wir als Team spielen. Und ich denke aus tiefstem Herzen, dass Diego, selbst mit seinen Fehlern – wie ich mit allen meinen – ein wenig so ist. Maradona spricht aus seiner Herkunft heraus, er akzeptierte seine neue Welt, aber er hörte nie auf, sie in Frage zu stellen, wenn er sie für ungerecht hielt. Und er stellt immer – hoffentlich ewig – ein Team zusammen und macht uns Freude.

Wir verabschieden uns nicht ohne demjenigen alles Gute zum Geburtstag zu wünschen, für den wir gebetet oder Kerzen angezündet oder unsere Rituale vollzogen haben, als sein Leben in Rauch aufgegangen ist und Tausende von Menschen weinten und überall hofften. Wir gehen und denken weiter nach und hinterfragen: Wir machen Fehler, und manchmal bezahlen wir sie und manchmal nicht. Ein bisschen wie er selbst, der die Verantwortung für Fehler übernimmt. Und wir teilen diese Ideen, weil unser Feminismus auf Schlamm und Widerspruch, auf Kollektivität und Feiern, auf Weinen und täglichem Schmerz über Ungerechtigkeiten aufgebaut ist. Wir wollen alles jeden Tag ändern, und in der Zwischenzeit schreien wir „Tor“ und umarmen uns.

DelFest 2019 Starts Today - Last Set of Recommendations

Front Country – “If Something Breaks”

Pairs Well With… Dixie Chicks, Fleetwood Mac

San Francisco natives Front Country describes their music as the intersection of indie-folk and Americana but their music has also been called “string-band pop.” Whatever it is, it’s definitely not your grandpa’s bluegrass or folk band. Front Country includes the powerful vocals of singer-songwriter and guitarist Melody Walker, mandolinist Adam Roszkiewicz, guitarist Jacob Groopman, bassist Jeremy Darrow and violinist Leif Karlstrom.  Walker complains that their home state doesn’t get its due as an incubator of country, bluegrass and roots music, noting that Merle Haggard and Buck Owens were Californians.  Their second record, Other Love Songs, was released in 2017 is a collection of, not surprisingly mostly serious love songs, with standouts including “If Something Breaks” and “I Don’t Wanna Die Angry.”  But the band’s whimsical side is most apparent on their cover songs, which are creative reimagining of pop and rock tunes.  Some are more successful than others, but it would be fun to hear them play their version of Kenny Rodgers’ “Just Dropped In” or Tom Petty’s “Don’t Do Me Like That.”  And if you get a chance, ask Melody what’s up with the cool Viking helmet in the video.

Ricky Skaggs & the Kentucky Thunder – “Ralph Stanley Tribute”

Pairs Well With…Ralph Stanley, Randy Travis, Sam Bush

While OEB loves festivals for discovering new artists, there is also the pleasure in the opportunity to see a music legend that you might not otherwise have sought out.  Well, DelFest is obliging.  Country and bluegrass royalty, Ricky Skaggs and his Kentucky Thunder will be playing on Sunday evening, just before Del McCoury’s last performance.  Skaggs’ journey began at a young age.  Raised on bluegrass, he played with Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys.  But Skaggs is better known for his many mainstream country hits “Highway 40 Blues,” “I Wouldn’t Change You if I Could,” “Love Can’t Get Better Than This,” and “Country Boy,” among others.  But later in his career, Skaggs has turned back to bluegrass with both renditions of classics and some fun with some odd collaborations such as a bluegrass cover of Rick James’ “Super Freak” with Bruce Hornsby.  Because it’s a bluegrass festival after all, we’ve provided a long set of his Ralph Stanley covers but we’re hoping he’ll mix up his set with songs from across his long and storied career.

Po’ Ramblin’ Boys – “Next Train South”

Pairs Well With… Bill Monroe, Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs

The two apostrophes in their name are a pretty good clue that that the Po’ Ramblin’ Boys play a hard-edged, hard-driving style of traditional bluegrass delivered the old-time way.  Their outfits, song choices, and picking, fiddling, and strumming styles make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. This East Tennessee band includes C.J. Lewandowski on mandolin, Jereme Brown on banjo, Josh Rinkel on guitar, and Jasper Lorentzen on bass with three members sharing vocal duties. With a heavy touring schedule across the United States and Europe and a new contract with Rounder Records, the Po Ramblin’ Boys are clearly well on their way to carrying the torch for bluegrass.   “Next Train South” is a good example of their style but pick any song really will give you a sense of the pocket they play in. Their first album, Their Back to the Mountains provides an equal dose of honky-tonk and high lonesome but its their energy and enthusiasm for the genre that makes them worth seeing.

Darin & Brooke Aldridge – “Every Time You Leave”

Pairs Well With… Kate Wolf, Bobby Lord/Patsy Cline duets, The Country Gentlemen

Pretty, plaintive harmonies capture what husband and wife duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge do. Their 2017 album, Faster & Farther, matches their strong clear voices with a strong picking band.  They grew up in North Carolina towns infused with country, gospel,  and bluegrass musical roots.  They met through family and friends in church and a musical friendship grew into something more.  While their music range and subject matter has broadened from its gospel roots, they stay true to their commitment to offering songs of hope, aspiration, and love. We featured “Every Time You Leave,” a sad country ballad that harkens back to the classic male/female country tunes of old.  “Sacred Lamb” from Faster and Faster captures their gospel  spirit whereas “Cumberland Plateau” features bluegrass picking over country-infused vocals.
