PROPAGANDA
ELEKTRA NATCHIOS (MARVEL COMICS)
1.) Elektra was created by the misogynist himself, Frank Miller, who would write female characters like garbage including her. Throughout her entire existence within a majority of Daredevil comics, Elektra has been treated as a character made to be a trophy for Matt Murdock. Daredevil writers love making her life revolve around Matt in a way that its framed as romantic when the reality of their relationship should be framed as a tragedy due to their conflicting ideals (and in my honest opinion, I think she should start hating him).
Frank Miller’s Man Without Fear completely butchers Elektra’s character by changing her character to this “crazy woman with voices in her head who loves to kill anyone and anything” completely shitting on the original backstory of her being a sheltered rich girl who was very kind and sweet until her father’s death that shattered her hopes and dreams, leading her to become vengeful and turn into an assassin who believes that all she’s good at is killing and that she can’t ever live a happy normal life.

And of course thanks to the mcu, that influenced current Daredevil writer Chip Zdarsky, who ruins her character EVEN MORE by trying to follow up on the MWF backstory AND make it align with the mcu version as well to this spy that was sent by the Hand to purposely seduce Matt just like how mcu Stick did in the show. Zdarsky writes Elektra in a way that ruins her character completely and makes her infantalize/belittle Matt by calling him naive and foolish despite in previous incarnations where she UNDERSTANDS why Matt wouldn’t follow in her footsteps and wouldn’t kill and WOULD NEVER TRY TO CONVINCE HIM OTHERWISE (and Zdarsky made her fetishize Matt’s blindness in a way in which she would never do if she was in character). Zdarsky made her stop her ways JUST FOR MATT and then writes Matt to constantly disrespect her and call her a murderer despite in previous iterations where he WOULDN’T DO THAT AND ALSO UNDERSTANDS WHY SHE’S LIKE THIS WITHOUT CHANGING HER. (Zdarsky wrote everyone OOC in his run but the most who suffered from it is def Matt and Elektra). Then Zdarsky made Elektra become Daredevil which yeah, the suit is cool, but the implications of it sucks as Daredevil is not an identity that anyone can pick up on like Spider-Man. Daredevil is explicitly an identity that Matt took up bc of the injustice his father received after his murder along with the desire to protect the victims of the justice system. Elektra is a foil to Matt so her uprising as Elektra wouldn’t align with becoming Daredevil. How he framed it was essentially on par of a woman taking up the husband’s last name but so much worse. Elektra as Daredevil doesn’t work because it completely erases her identity as Elektra and further pushes the idea that she only exists to serve as Matt’s trophy, as his pain, as his wife, as his tragedy, etc etc.
Not a single male Daredevil writer should ever LOOK at Elektra ever again until they know how to write her because she has been done so dirty and receives misogyny on EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF HER EXISTENCE. There’s only been a few times where Elektra’s been done well and a lot of them had Matt be involved very little in it and it really makes you think.
2.) Both show and fandom perperativing the sexist and racist troupe of a dragon lady: overt sexual and physical aggression, untrustworthiness, and mysteriousness. The fandom is notorious for saying Elektra is toxic, instead of recognizes she’s an abuse victim working for her abuser. More often that not, all nuance is thrown out the window

3.) Constantly mischaracterized and used as a prop for Matt Murdock/Daredevil, especially in the case of his netflix series and his ongoing comics written by Chip Zdarksy (where she is so intensely out of character she’s almost unrecognizable, and in the case of the current Daredevil run parts of her origin story have even been heavily retconned to more closely resemble her Netflix counterpart which is. Oh my fucking god its infuriating.) But it’s an issue really like half the time she shows up in any given daredevil comic (im being generous)
ABBIE MILLS (SLEEPY HOLLOW) (CW: Racism)
1.) Abbie starts out as one of the two protagonists of the show, only to get almost entirely sidelined as early as season 2, getting less and less screen time and allowed no relationships, either platonic or romantic, while the other lead Ichabod Crane has a seemingly infinite amount of them. It got bad enough that her actor wanted to leave the show, which they did by having her sacrifice her soul in the season 3 finale for the male lead to live, and then they ended the show after season 4 anyway, because guess what, it’s a bad idea to entirely sideline and eventually kill off one of your leads!
2.) She was killed by the narrative to advance her white male co-protagonist’s plotline and I’m still mad about it, Abbie deserved so much better. This is an example of racism in the narrative too and it extended to the production of the show, see news coverage:
3.) Look, I only watched the first season but they killed her off the show SHE was a co lead of!! Misogyny AND racism, all rolled into one. I remember seeing the fan reactions and I was so mad on their behalfs. They wrote her off her own show and from what I recall, gave her less and less screentime leading up to that. Truly, she deserved so much better and I will always be upset by this.

I respond to every single comment, with exactly one exception, that absolutely haunts me. The person just kept replying to me no matter what I said and I couldn't make them stop
What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending
Mornings, for sure. One of my first ever spideypool fics back from 2016. Peter dies at the end. know we're not together (but I won't forget you) is a close second though

Oh I don't know, I have a lot of happy endings but they usually follow a fuckton of angst. Maybe in which the daily planet staff are 100% convinced that the kent-lanes are fucking superman, but I wouldn't call that a traditional ending

Oh yeah. My first ever smut sucked but then I wrote so much in 2021 for the witcher that I actually got pretty good at it, or at least as mlm sex. I have some body dysmorphia issues around vaginas and I never feel like I write that well. Anyway I tend to go for excessively sweet or incredibly kinky and borderline unhealthy fics

Only the buffy/jason fic, unless you count daredevil tv and marvel comics or itsv and marvel comics to be crossovers

Yes!! It's incomplete unlike the original fic but someone translated most of I'm a mess (but I'm the mess that you wanted) into Russian. This wasn't the question but @flowerparrish also podficced the first chapter of my jaybuffy fic!!

Yes but I removed it from my page following an extremely brutal and somewhat traumatizing fight with some of the people I was cowriting it with

Mmmm I don't know, that's a good question. For a long time I would've answered jily. Spideypool is probably the main contender now, although spuffy could give it a run for its money - despite the fact that I've only written one fic for them (and implied them in my jaybuffy fic), I've adored them since I was 13, which is. What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Mmm I'm always hoping I'll finish my wips, but the ones I doubt the most are my yennskier fic (no progress in over a year), my literati fic (although I did make some progress about a month ago), and I don't plan on going back to my drarry Hogwarts professor au for obvious reasons

I'm fluent in Hebrew and my first ever fic was in Hebrew, so if that came up I'd feel pretty comfortable with it. Anything else I'd have to approach someone who spoke the language, and I'd rather just write it in English and say it was in the other languages
First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter and again, it was in Hebrew. I recently described what it was about to a group of friends who called it, and I quote, "adorable". I was ten or eleven at the time and I do not plan on reposting it.

That's a toughie. I think probably I'm a mess (but I'm the mess that you wanted), but Under the Pink Hood, Of Three Times Lily Evans Changed Her Mind About James Potter, and know we're not together (but I won't forget you) are all honorable mentions

Batman #112: Missing that Ghostmaker backup already even if everything still here remains great, that was the real pure expression of what Tynion was going for here energy-wise.
The Joker Presents: A Puzzlebox #2: Decent, but if dad decides to drop it I won't shed any tears.
Batman/Catwoman #7: God, I know there's no way it was planned but that we've finally got the issue where they fuck and it's the first one NOT drawn by Clay Mann feels like some sort of cosmic happenstance, whether deliberate or glitch in the system.
Justice League Infinity #3: Still really fun!

Infinite Frontier #6: So while not really at all comparable this is still probably the most viscerally and multifacedly I've loathed an issue of a comic since the end of Doomsday Clock, and not even that sweet-ass Gerads cover can save it. I want to travel back in time and slap Joshua Williamson's hands as he writes this for his hubris. A rough collection of my spoilery thoughts:
* Xermanico, baby, why would they do you like this? Not that it isn't unintentionally apropos to get the Blackstars guy on this, granted.
* So Darkseid's officially settled back in to sucking now.
* Lol none of the JSA/Bones/Roy Harper bullshit remotely mattered.
* Psycho Pirate's exit is ALMOST great. I'll give it that much.
* Guarantee someone watched The Mandalorian and that's why the Omega Beams are black now.
* Jesus Christ there's gonna be a Justice Incarnate book and somehow I'm actively dreading it.

* There are no words for the sigh I let out at our boy the Empty Hand sticking his head in here. Legit wish he'd been killed off by Batman Who Laughs in the big 'ol Metal epic, it would have surely been more dignified than wherever this is leading.
* My first thought was "Christ you idiots, I get Grant sort of left what 'Multiverse-2' was open but why would it be '2' if it was the original" and then I realized "...oh jesus like Earth Two. Fuck."
Just...just squandered. Joshua Williamson's doing The Sequel To Multiversity and it's like watching the schematics for a perpetual motion machine used as a hanky. Embarrassed down to my bones I extended him any degree of benefit of the doubt. Before he was only banging Johns toys together, which meant he was playing on the appropriate creative level. "Zoom turned the Flashes against each other through super-speed subliminal whispering" is what that material deserves. But not this.

Marvelvsmarvel Year in Review Pt V:
The MCU Farewells
This will be my last Year In Review post for 2020 thank you to those who have stuck with em. As we’re swinging into the new year everybody be safe share some love and kiss this year goodbye!
With all the exciting upcoming Marvel projects coming out to theaters and Disney+, with the new comes throwing out the old and it seems time to finally put some hopes and rumors of past Marvel projects to rest. While I made a separate post about Agents of SHIELD this one is for the Projects left on the cutting room floor. The image above by BossLogic is a concept of Daredevil and Spider-Man (2/3 of Team Red) possibly crossing over someday. Next year marks the end of the 2 year period where Disney can once again use the previously Netflix owned characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. But based on the new slate of shows coming to Disney+ like Moon Knight and She Hulk, it does not appear in the books to rehash these older and frankly grittier stories. Some of these we have already known are done and others we need to significantly put to rest the hope in seeing them reappear:
Agents of SHIELD: Based on the end scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home we know that the MCU is going to be doing something with SWORD. Coulson had made a nice cameo on Captain Marvel but those films will no longer take place in the past. Then based on Randall Park’s FBI Agent Jimmy Woo (originally a SHIELD agent in the comics) its looks like they’re moving on up (literally. To the sky.)
Netflix Defenders: Done but ended well. Doubt we see Iron Fist in Shang Chi or Daredevil in the already over the top Spider-Man Hom3. Most of the series ended with cliffhangers but these being the final seasons at least they all ended better than they started. As for the namesake there was an original Defenders team in the comics of the Hulk, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, and Namor that could form up sometime down the road.
Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes): His show got cancelled from Hulu before production but there’s at least a script and a lead in Gabriel Luna out there floating in the Multiverse should they want to use him in Doctor Strange or Blade later down the way. But there’s always Johnny Blaze as well.
Inhumans: I know the series sucked (trust me I powered through it). It wasn’t any fault of the cast or the characters themselves. The Inhumans have some great roots in the comics but not nearly enough for the deciding powers to deem important. The Eternals are essentially going to overlap their roles in the MCU.
Cloak and Dagger/The Runaways: Again we’re seeing many new teens pop up like Mz Marvel Kamala Khan, Ironheart Riri Williams, Hawkeye Kate Bishop, etc. so I’m just not sure the need for these teen heroes is quite there and many people didn’t think the Runaways was worth producing at the time anyways.
X-Force: Marvel Studios talked as if they are pushing for this to happen but it’s yet to be confirmed. Deadpool for sure. Do they maintain the original cast as far as Josh Brolin as Cable as well? Mostly questions for the X-Men properties.
New Mutants: I know they confirmed that the film that took forever to come out only to receive critical reviews is considered to be a part of the MCU but remember they said the same of the tv shows and that never proved out. I think any further iterations get recast but maybe they keep one or two like Anya-Taylor Joy’s Magik. That’s the Incredible Hulk treatment maintaining William Hurt’s Thaddeus Ross and now Tim Roth’s Abomination but essentially nothing else including the lead actor.

3! ♡ the riddler IS probably my favorite character. comfort character, really. i went through a tornado last year and it was really hard on me. but without internet connection (but electricity thanks to a generator,) i watched my brother play the arkham games and riddler brought so much joy to me when i was so paranoid and depressed. he helped me a lot through those difficult times and i think that’s why i’ll consider him my favorite character forever.

MULTI OR SINGLE! ♡ personally, EVERY TIME i try to make a multi-muse, it fails. fr. it always just becomes a single muse. like this blog itself actually used to feature ben urich of the daredevil/marvel comics. but i just had far more muse for ed that this blog just became a riddler only blog. however? when it comes to other rpers, i don’t have a preference! ✌
FLUFF / ANGST / SMUT! ♡
FLUFF: i LOVE fluff,,, but with a character like ED? it’s kind of hard to do such threads.
ANGST: i really like “angst.” mostly because this blog deals with dark themes and exploring riddler as a person and like? most of edward’s life has been very messed up, beyond messed up. therefore, dark content threads are my favorite because it helps explore this.
SMUT: i actually like smut threads just fine! but i don’t do them too often. namely because i feel i suck at them. and honestly? after one smut thread with someone, i often get a little bored of them... just because it’s kinda hard, at least for me, to do different smut threads in a way that’s unique and different from the last.
PLOT / MEMES! ♡ i suck at plotting, at least head on. plots are usually something that just... COMES TO ME. therefore i almost always prefer just throwing an ask meme or open starter out and just winging it.

Fandoms: Daredevil, Defenders, Punisher... mostly TV versions although i do incorporate other stuff sometimes, Avengers (...mmmmostly MCU characterization and otherwise fuck canon, but definitely comics Clint Barton), formerly Lucifer (TV), Star Trek TOS (no reboot for me), and i wrote one Good Omens (book) fic back in the day.
These are only the fandoms i’ve ficced in.
Tropes: hurt/comfort, whump, angst and fluff combo... i try to have some humour too, at least that’s the goal.
Otherwise i’m willing to try stuff, even tropes i’m generally not really into, just to see if i can twist them in something i can go with after all (i’ve done de-aged, only one bed, road trip... that i can remember off the top of my head, oh and crack pr0ny fic too, gah. Well, #itried ?)

Fic I spent the most time on: hard to say; the longer ones i imagine!
Fic I spent the least time on: no idea :-/
Longest fic: often the rarepair ones because i tend to work harder are making them meet, get to know each other, etc in a way that makes at least a bit of sense to me. (i am not into, “they saw each other and were consumed by lust and sexed it out against the nearest wall, the end” kind of narrative so that’s how i end up with ballooning fics!)
Cases in point: Hawkguy and the Devil, Matt/comics!Clint, 35K, and Court Crush, also 35K, Matt/Tony.
Then, there are series i did that put together form quite long stories...
Shortest fic: i am not a drabble / short ficlet fan but i still tried to write one, the Kirk/Spock Fabric. (it’s old and like the rest of my TOS stuff, i now like to pretend it doesn’t exist)

--- i am not comfortable with using the stats. i tend to angst about “why don’t people like that one” and “the time spent on it & ficcing angst it gave me to feedback ratio is T_T which must mean i suck” and “i clearly am garbage” and other silly, pointless thoughts, so... i’m not answering that one. ---

Favorite fic I wrote: no idea! i go through an “i hate it” phase for all fics, and for some it lasts a pretty long time. If it’s finished i’ll still publish just so i don’t think about it anymore.
There’s also the “let’s reread this and see if i want to write more in that univUUUUGGGHH” situation!
Fic you want to rewrite / expand on: i want to do a sequel to the Cap/Matt one; i feel like there’s more to tell in that universe.
As for rewriting... there are quite a few i’m not particularly happy with but i’m not going to rewrite or delete them; i’d feel it’s like cheating because i Must Face My Shortcomings.

Hmmm one of my WIPs is a John Wick / Daredevil / Punisher crossover, which aims for Fratt. Dogs, violence, New York, whumpage, emo dudes pretending they’re not emo... sounds perfect, right?
The thing is, every time i go back to it, i freeze after a while because i don’t quite know how to merge those two universes - how could Frank or Matt not be aware of the JW underworld, its impact, the shootouts...? They’d want to go after it but that can’t end well... What about Winston, does he know Fisk? i toy with it from time to time; i’m over 6K words in but i don’t want to betray either canon too much and... *angst*

Happy March 22nd! I’m running a Danger Days based table top using the Atomic Highway system so I had to do a lot of research to figure out slang and world stuff! You may or may not have remembered me teasing this back in January (which was suppose to be out by the end of Jan but life sucks so lets dance but it’s better late than never!) how do you know so much about matt, torch, deadpool, and spidey?? i wanna get into all those things, but i have no clue and little resources to start.
I’m so glad I give off the vibe of knowing a lot about them because Imma be real with you fam, I actually know next to nothing about them. Literally the only one of them that I’ve even read the comics for is spidey, and for him I’m still in the really early parts of the series.
Just about everything I know about any of these fandoms actually comes from fanfiction - once you read enough of it, you start to see which pieces of it are taken from canon, and which ones are the author’s own style. I do not recommend getting into the fandom this way lmao.
It’s honestly really slow going getting into any comic fandom, so I suggest choosing the one out of those four you’re most interested in, and focus on that. If you like all of them, maybe try Spidey? He has a bunch of crossovers and limited series, and Torch shows up every once in a while in Spidey’s series.
If you want a really quick and easy way to learn the basics of all those characters, the movies are invaluable. They’ll introduce you to the main cast of characters you’ll need to know, as well as to some of their major villains. It’ll also give you a good handle on who the main characters are as people. The only one this won’t work for is Torch, because I’m gonna be real with you, the Fantastic Four movies absolutely suck.
But, try watching the following and you’ll be off to a good start:
Deadpool 1 & 2 - gives you a good rundown on his backstory, his friends and loved ones, his powers, and his personality
Spider-Man already has three movie series,and all of them are missing something important :/ But I suggest starting off with either Andrew Garfield’s spidey (the story with Gwen is an important one in the fandom, and the other two movies don’t have her), or Toby Maguire which introduces you to Harry Osborn and MJ Watson as well as spidey’s most iconic villain, the Green Goblin. Spider-Man: Homecoming is really well done and I really love Tom Holland’s spider-man, but it actually changes a LOT of the small details of the series, so I suggest probably leaving that one for last if you still haven’t seen it (they changed Aunt May’s age, changed MJ’s name, didn’t even bother to include Gwen or Harry, and for some reason introduced Ned Leeds as a friend of Peter’s even though in the comics he’s just another reporter at the Daily Bugle and isn’t actually friends with Peter at all, but that’s a story for another time).
And of course if you haven’t seen it, definitely watch Into the Spider-Verse. Peter isn’t the main character, but it’s still a really good movie and teaches you about all the different spideys.
For Daredevil, try watching his netflix series. It’s got 3 seasons and introduces you to his closest friends and his main big bad.
After watching all of those, you should know enough about the fandoms to be able to read fics for them :D When it comes to reading the comics, I don’t know about anyone other than Spider-Man, but these three sites have been super helpful to me since I started getting into the fandom:
THIS site is where I read the series. Warning that it has some truly awful ads, but it’s the best site I’ve found so far. If you do decide to read it on here, make sure you don’t start with the annuals even though they’re at the beginning of the list, but start with the actual first Issue. Spider-Man’s actual origin didn’t happen in his own series though, so if you want to see how he gets bit and everything, you’ll have to read Amazing Fantasy #15 HERE. (16-18 were released a lot later, during the 90s I think, but they’re also about Peter’s early days as spidey so they’re also worth giving a read).
THIS site gives you the Spider-Man chronological reading order including side series and appearances in other comics if you want to check it out. It’s been super helpful to me and I use it religiously.
And finally THIS wikipedia page gives you a list of every single spider-man comic. It can be kinda overwhelming, but if there are any specific crossovers you want to read, this will tell you their name and when they were published.
Anyways, that’s all I’ve got for now nonny! Sorry for rambling so much and apologies if this confused you or anything. Again, I’m still super new to the fandom so I won’t know everything, but if you want any more help, then totally feel free to ask me!

PRELIMINARY ROUND - MARVEL COMICS - ELEKTRA NATCHIOS
PROPAGANDA
Elektra Natchios (Marvel Comics)
1.) Elektra was created by the misogynist himself, Frank Miller, who would write female characters like garbage including her. Throughout her entire existence within a majority of Daredevil comics, Elektra has been treated as a character made to be a trophy for Matt Murdock. Daredevil writers love making her life revolve around Matt in a way that its framed as romantic when the reality of their relationship should be framed as a tragedy due to their conflicting ideals (and in my honest opinion, I think she should start hating him).
Frank Miller's Man Without Fear completely butchers Elektra's character by changing her character to this "crazy woman with voices in her head who loves to kill anyone and anything" completely shitting on the original backstory of her being a sheltered rich girl who was very kind and sweet until her father's death that shattered her hopes and dreams, leading her to become vengeful and turn into an assassin who believes that all she's good at is killing and that she can't ever live a happy normal life.

And of course thanks to the mcu, that influenced current Daredevil writer Chip Zdarsky, who ruins her character EVEN MORE by trying to follow up on the MWF backstory AND make it align with the mcu version as well to this spy that was sent by the Hand to purposely seduce Matt just like how mcu Stick did in the show. Zdarsky writes Elektra in a way that ruins her character completely and makes her infantalize/belittle Matt by calling him naive and foolish despite in previous incarnations where she UNDERSTANDS why Matt wouldn't follow in her footsteps and wouldn't kill and WOULD NEVER TRY TO CONVINCE HIM OTHERWISE (and Zdarsky made her fetishize Matt's blindness in a way in which she would never do if she was in character). Zdarsky made her stop her ways JUST FOR MATT and then writes Matt to constantly disrespect her and call her a murderer despite in previous iterations where he WOULDN'T DO THAT AND ALSO UNDERSTANDS WHY SHE'S LIKE THIS WITHOUT CHANGING HER. (Zdarsky wrote everyone OOC in his run but the most who suffered from it is def Matt and Elektra). Then Zdarsky made Elektra become Daredevil which yeah, the suit is cool, but the implications of it sucks as Daredevil is not an identity that anyone can pick up on like Spider-Man. Daredevil is explicitly an identity that Matt took up bc of the injustice his father received after his murder along with the desire to protect the victims of the justice system. Elektra is a foil to Matt so her uprising as Elektra wouldn't align with becoming Daredevil. How he framed it was essentially on par of a woman taking up the husband's last name but so much worse. Elektra as Daredevil doesn't work because it completely erases her identity as Elektra and further pushes the idea that she only exists to serve as Matt's trophy, as his pain, as his wife, as his tragedy, etc etc.
Not a single male Daredevil writer should ever LOOK at Elektra ever again until they know how to write her because she has been done so dirty and receives misogyny on EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF HER EXISTENCE. There's only been a few times where Elektra's been done well and a lot of them had Matt be involved very little in it and it really makes you think.
2.) Both show and fandom perperativing the sexist and racist troupe of a dragon lady: overt sexual and physical aggression, untrustworthiness, and mysteriousness. The fandom is notorious for saying Elektra is toxic, instead of recognizes she's an abuse victim working for her abuser. More often that not, all nuance is thrown out the window

3.) Constantly mischaracterized and used as a prop for Matt Murdock/Daredevil, especially in the case of his netflix series and his ongoing comics written by Chip Zdarksy (where she is so intensely out of character she's almost unrecognizable, and in the case of the current Daredevil run parts of her origin story have even been heavily retconned to more closely resemble her Netflix counterpart which is. Oh my fucking god its infuriating.) But it's an issue really like half the time she shows up in any given daredevil comic (im being generous)
Elektra Natchios (NMCU)
1.) This continues over to her mcu version in the netflix show where the writers decide to be extremely racist and make her the dragon lady stereotype while also following the Man Without Fear version to which many dd comics fan fucking hate. The show paints her as someone who was born evil with this Black Sky bullshit and makes her a puppet for the Hand and then kills her off just to be white man angst for Matt (comics have done this too but the netflix show takes this idea to such a degree that its horrible). Thanks to the netflix show, many fans believe that Elektra is this murderous bloodthirsty woman who is abusive to Matt and a manipulator so now Elektra faces misogyny and racism from fandom.

Comics this week (5/19/2021)?
We Only Find Them When They’re Dead #6: Feels like a second book in a series that feels like a near-complete departure at first from the original volume in the best way, and the reveal about the giant we saw on the last page of the previous issue knocked my socks off.
The Many Deaths of Laila Starr #2: Hit me harder than the first issue, really well-done melancholy fairy tale stuff.
Ultramega #3: Still so dang goooood
Radian Black #4: Huh. Well color me intrigued.
Stillwater #7: Hahahahaha holy shit, of course
Daredevil #30: Breaking, Zdarsky hasn’t suddenly started to suck at writing superhero comics in the past week
Shang-Chi #1: I liked Yang and Ruan’s previous mini well enough but wasn’t blown away and might have skipped this if not for the high concept, but Yang’s already making the most of the grand tour aspect of this and I’m looking forward to where it goes.
The Mighty Valkyries #2: Not a book I have a ton to say on, it’s still pretty dang good though. Glad Gronbekk is getting opportunities off of this with that new Warhammer book, even if I’ll probably pass on that since it took a Gillen to get me onboard at all.
Fantastic Four: Life Story #1: ...this kinda stunk? It reads for all the world like Russell has a big FF vs. Galactus story he wants to tell and he’s phoning in the entire Life Story superstructure surrounding it to have an excuse to get there. There’s room for improvement in subsequent issues and I like Izaakse’s art but this is a stunning disappointment by the standards of both its predecessor and Russell’s oeuvre.
Heroes Reborn: Peter Parker The Amazing Shutterbug #1: There’s some alright storytelling here but the entire thing feels perfunctory, I’m not crushed or anything but there’s just enough potential glimmering through for me to feel let down.
Heroes Reborn #3: Hey so this issue is pretty good? Still the same flavor as my beloved Aaron Avengers trash, but the actually solidly done version of that rather than one that bypasses any good taste of mine to appeal to some kind of weird hindbrain enjoyment. Maybe the guy’s got a Flash run in him, this is the most inspired he’s felt in a hot minute.
Way of X #2: So this issue rules and the last page had me howling, but it extremely threw me when it was brought to my attention that there’s a character in here whose entire facial structure has basically been changed from a nonwhite person in her original appearance to pretty dang white. Initially flipped out Bob Quinn did this, turns out intermediate appearances between the image I saw and this changed her appearance bit-by-bit and this was just going off her most recent appearances so it’s not really his fault, it’s still not great.
The Immortal Hulk: Time of Monsters #1: Paknadel’s a name I’ve seen bandied around as a promising fresh talent for a few years who whenever I’ve encountered him usually just made me go “that was okay”, but this was damn excellent and whether it represents a level-up or a niche he fits in if he and Ferreyra took over Hulk after Ewing leaves I’d be all about it.
Catwoman #31: Still a really good run! Running out of ways to say it!
Justice League #61: There is a way that one moment could have worked but as played it’s the dopiest, tweeist kind of Bendisism. I’m gonna give this run some time to breathe because I’ve enjoyed most of his other DC work but this is starting to feel like the Bad version of Bendis we saw until recently coming back.
Superman: Red and Blue #3: Was already hoping to get the John Paul Leon cover as soon as it was solicited, especially glad now. The last two issues but this is a proper all-killer no-filler:
Holland/Braga/Sharpe: I was expecting this to be the forgettable installment of the bunch but this was a really fun little Trinity story.
Fiffe: I took a look at Copra in the past and thought it looked neat but wasn’t drawn in, revealing myself as a plebian once more. Loved this though, a fun, gorgeous adventure with an enjoyably personable take on Clark.
Thomas/Pekmezci/Sharpe: Brandon Thomas: a dude who’s been writing quite a bit of Superman lately, but still definitely isn’t writing nearly enough Superman.
Spencer/Ward/Sharpe: This pains me to admit, but even without the crutch of having Ward doing the absolutely fucking imperial work here you’d expect? Nick Spencer writes a really fun, sweet little Superman story here. Between this and that Jimmy Olsen story he did a long time ago I guess Metropolis just draws out his better instincts.
Stokoe: Stokoe doing a fun l’il Superman space adventure! What more could you ask for?

my favorite book/season/etc: You know, I think it might be 3? It was just so soothing to my soul.

my favorite cast member: Charlie might actually be the most implausibly nice person I’ve ever met and also his ARMS.

a character I’d die defending: Eliza prolly? It’s tough because in this context I’m not comfortable separating the real person from the character and so while Washington in the play is lovely, for example, the real one was very definitely a slave owner. So.
a character I just can’t sympathize with: I don’t think there is one, except for really minor ones like James Reynolds? The flip side of being uncomfortable with the flaws of the real people is how even Burr is made understandable by the play.
a character I grew to love: It’s less the character on his own but the more I listen to the OBC the more I appreciate the subtle things Oke is doing with Madison. Also I thought Laurens/Philip was a nothing part until I saw Jordan Fisher in the role and he stole every single one of his scenes.
