I was listening to "Son of a preacherman" on my way to work this morning and now I want a Harringrove fic. (If it already exists in some form, feel free to throw the link my way!)
Imagine it: Neil finds out his son is into boys, and brings the whole family to the middle of nowhere, Indiana, because he is a god-fearing man and no son of his will turn out that way, etc etc. The first time they go to church (which is well-attended, there are many religious people in Hawkins, which is probably why Neil chose it), the preacher welcomes the new family and also invites them to dinner with his own family. Neil is pleased, and threatens Billy to be on his best behavior or else. Billy, still recovering from the beating he probably got before they moved, grits his teeth and says yes sir, because he has decided that he's gonna just get through the next couple of years without making a splash - just survive until graduation, and then leave.
Only, the preacher and his wife, they have a son, who they introduce as Steve. And he is pretty and popular and polite and Billy curses internally because he's just Billy's type. Billy resigns himself to catching a few glances in secret only. Good thing the guy is the preacher's son, right? Because surely such a boy is too much of a goody two shoes to even notice those glances, let alone know what they mean, right?
Wrong! The good boy act is really just an act. Scraping a bit on the surface, or getting him away from parents and authorities, reveals King Steve. He smokes, he drinks, he fools around ... And apparently, not only with girls ... He sees Billy's looks and he very much knows what it means, and more than that - he's interested.
Suddenly just surviving until graduation is much harder - because Hawkins' preacher's son, secret bad boy Steve Harrington is not the good influence Billy's dad thinks he is.

every time you see news about an athlete competing while injured and everyone's reactions are praising them like a hero bc that means they actually care about the team/sport/competition or whatever, imagine me as a dog barking at an evil creature in a horror movie. thanks
#the day we STOP glorifying pain i will finally know peace#try being in pain 24/7 !!!!! then tell me again it's a heroic and morally good !!!!!!! also fuck off#it's not heroic it's not good it's not manly it's not caring about winning what it IS is dangerous and reckless#and risking permanent damage and a disability#and i bet you fuckers would then start complaining about that same athlete 'underperforming' and 'not putting in enough effort' and shit#when maybe. MAYBE. if they'd taken care of the injury when it first arose that shit wouldn't have got worse and become a Big fucking problem#to be clear when i say you i mean a vague general you i see this all the time and rn it's aimed at no one in particular#and also i'm not blaming the athetles who keep competing through injuries i don't think it's their fault#i'm blaming these shit fucking reactions that everyone KEEPS having when it happens. pundits commentators fans etc#everyone is always praising these athletes these PEOPLE for how brave and daring they are for ignoring the pain they're in so they can help#the team or get a chance to win a race or a medal or a trophy or whatever#i understand it's not an easy or fun decision as a pro athlete to give up a chance at winning something#but i think we should DEFINITELY still encourage them to fucking give it up!!! even if it sucks even if it's a big win they're giving up!!#bc the risk of the injury getting worse and permanent and fucking up their career their LIFE for a very very long time if not forever is#just not worth it and not a risk to be taken lightly#i can't believe i have to keep complaining about this!!! still!!!!!! when will everyone learn!!!!!#what prompted this rant might not even be that bad but really i don't care the culture around this in sports needs to change asap#rant over i'm fucking MAD. and in pain (funnily enough lol)#nico.txt

New ship dynamic: who's the bull and who's the matador :)
I think, in this AU, Fernando is generally pretty fond of Seb when he first meets him. Like "ah yes my very own protégé, very nice, I shall mold him in my image." But then Seb starts veering off that course. Bullfighting is all about being dramatic, but Seb maybe has a bit too much(🤏) flair for the dramatic. This escalation starts while he's still Fernando's assistant but he keeps it generally at bay. But god when he becomes a matador himself, he's just off the rails insane.
Bullfighting, to me, is a sport about reckless endangerment of one's self in the pursuit of drama and performance(its literally described as a tragedy in three acts.) But Fernando thinks Seb endangers himself *too* much, not because he cares or anything, but he's making a mockery of the sport!! Especially when Seb starts doing that bull hand symbol(seen above), Fernando just keeps become more enraged with him, not anything to do with the fact that Seb is threatening his records and threatening his own wellbeing, nah of course not.
Seb's gesture is making a mockery of the sport, he's disrespecting the culture, the very nature of it, blah blah blah. Jenson once asks Fernando, after noticing him seething while watching Seb do his gesture, "Which bull are you really trying to defeat?" One could also describe Fernando and Seb's relationship as a "tragedy with three acts."
Anyways Fernando gets very tied up with this rivalry. Even after suffering a severe injury(I have yet to decide, but y'know mchonda electrocution core), he quickly returns to the sport, loath to let Seb get any more headway. And then Seb gets injured, poor little sweet Seb, and neither of them can handle it. Though I already covered this in my prev lore post 🤭 and I think I put it pretty viscerally there so!! I digress.
They're both matadors, but the bull itself is not the only bull Fernando wants to conquer. Conquer as in death? Hm.

daphne is arguably the most dynamic and fleshed out character of all of the scooby doo franchise and yet people like to say that she doesn't have a personality because she's stereotypically feminine and strong rather than being a "strong female character" (i.e. masculine but with big boobs).

when the poll ends do you mind sharing what you vs your friend thought the key hockey concept was? I'm so curious !
yes !! so skill play ended up winning, but if you combine the two categories of fighting and physical play, they add up to way more. this came up because i'm currently going through a whole emotional journey around violence in sport and the way personal choice, bodily autonomy, and the monolith of sports culture can overlap and conflict. that's not super important but i think more people should think about it because it's a really interesting and tough topic. anyway, i was talking to my friend from rural BC, and we were talking about violence/physicality as an inherent part of hockey or if there was a way to mitigate dangerous injury while still maintaining the spirit of hockey as a sport.
she was of the opinion that physical play, fighting, all of that were essential to hockey, and there was no way to play the same game without them. i'm still working on what my opinion is, but i'm finding that more and more i come down on the side of, hey, all of these injuries are unnecessary and there's no reason for hockey -- contact sport though it may be -- to be this dangerous and injurious. there's a lot of reasons i feel this way, but one of the biggest ones is that when i think of hockey -- when i think of the most important, joyous, exciting moments in hockey, moments that made me genuinely love this sport and the place it holds in my life -- i think almost entirely about skill play. what makes hockey worth watching for me is the speed, the skill, the insane passes and bad-angle goals. kirill kaprizov sidney crosby trick shot type shit. when those players have room to play, i love this sport like nothing else.
my friend, on the other hand, isn't wrong when she says that overall, the impression people have of hockey tends toward violence. even if they haven't thought about it enough to pass judgment, the vast majority of people think first of checks and fights.
the problem i have is that a lot of times, skill players are stifled by physical play. i like puck possession, but checking turns that into an almost irrelevant part of nhl hockey, and i like when superstars have space to do insane things, but if they're injured half the year because every fourth liner in the league pretty much has free reign to headhunt without the refs blowing the whistle, i don't get to see any of that. it's the same reason i'm annoyed with the way kirill's been treated in the league -- he's a phenomenal player who can do unparalleled things on the ice, but his production has been down because he got injured a couple seasons ago and hasn't had the space (or protection from further injuries, looking at you, dops) to heal it fully and get back to form. in what world is that the best that hockey can be? i'd rather every skill player gets long, obnoxious nhl careers than keep fistfights in a sport that really doesn't need them, but i'm aware i'm in the tiny minority there.

I'm not against anyone topping my soup with cheese, but I already doubled the amount of cheese in this potato-cheese soup. It already tastes like a block of medium cheddar my guy, what are you doing. Why are you like this.

i don't know if this makes sense, but in disco elysium a 42% check is basically an 87% check, but in fallen london a 68% might as well be a 25%.

saw this reel of a guy that was skating along the sidewalk and when he came to a small road some cunt almost runs him over and then starts honking the car like crazy so the skating guy just starts hitting the car with the skateboard and breaks a window so the other cunt almost runs him down with the car as he runs away. and the caption was like "who's in the wrong" and i hate people with loud sports cars so fucking much that the skater couldve killed him and he'd still be in the right
