Revising A Tale of Star-Crossed Knights - Chapters 15 and 16
Chapter 15: https://archiveofourown.org/works/39015690/chapters/103649820 Chapter 16: https://archiveofourown.org/works/39015690/chapters/104060157
I've grouped these chapters into one post because they are both filler chapters during Part 2.
I think when I was planning out Part 2, I initially wanted it to have 8 chapters just like Part 1. The midpoint would be when the Aed Massacre and Battle of Belhalla happen offscreen and then the climax at the end would be Erinys' death. But there was just so much fluff scenes that I wanted to show of the daily life of the two families before that last point where Part 2 leaves off right before FE5 and FE4 Part 2 begin.
I did cut one scene in the revising, that being a scene at the beginning of Chapter 15 where Ced accidentally injures Hawke while playing with each other. (It's still mentioned in a later section of the chapter). I also significantly cut down on a partially finished scene where Finn was teaching Leif how to read in Tarrah/Tahra. Part of me wanted to cut more scenes, but it was just so hard to choose one. Finn's arrival to Fiana, Erinys finding Arthur, and Lachesis leaving for Diarmuid were essential ones. I couldn't see myself cutting the scene at the beginning of Chapter 16 where Erinys has the vivid dream of Finn either - that one's a gutpunch. Same with the scene in Chapter 15 where Lex's half-brother tries to romance Erinys. I probably could have done it, but I just wasn't feeling for cutting up that large of a piece of the work, especially when it was Part 3 that suffers the most from bloat.
(Oh hey also a scene from Chapter 15 made it into another fanfic. Feel free to read if you like OCs.)
One thing I almost did was cut out the part in Chapter 16 where Finn is feeling hints of attraction towards Lachesis. That part was included because I wanted to show some kind of idea like "hey, this isn't how Jugdral usually turns out." It's similar to the scene in Chapter 10 where Lewyn confesses that he had a crush on Erinys and was jealous when Finn got to her first. In the end I ended up keeping that part. It's smaller than what it could have been, i.e. I thought about having it so that it nearly becomes an actual affair rather than it being a hint of an attraction.
I guess the other big thing in this chapter is that this (specifically Chapter 16) is when Ced and Fee start being introduced as characters of their own in the story. They're old enough to where their perspective can be seen. Their promotions at the end of the chapter is what signifies that are "adults" as far as the story is concerned.
--
Original Author's Notes below for Chapter 15:
This chapter is fluffy-angsty pieces. On the surface they're fluff, but they overlay angsty undercurrents. I didn't really have a big theme for this chapter, but the last scene is the second scene from the "Pining" fic. It got edited though, of course.
Miscellaneous notes: I didn't say this but Blaise gets to tutor both Ced and Hawke in magic. I like to think that Arvis tries to sue for peace against Silesse the same way that he did against Travant, except Erinys says no. Erinys telling Fee bedtime stories about Sigurd is actually something that is referenced in-game. Jeanne is probably older than Nanna, I assume? Yves probably dies during Chapter 3 so if that's the case, Jeanne *has* to be older than Nanna (and even Diarmuid in this timeline). I have thoughts on climate but I'll probably get into them in a future chapter's A/N. I do think Tofa is far enough north to see the midnight sun (and in turn the polar night). Hildebrand in my thoughts is a younger sibling of Lex, but I don't think it really matters that much. Maria gets to be a Heavenly Knight because why not...I don't really have anything about this in the future.
Original Author's Notes for Chapter 16:
Honestly after the first scene this chapter felt like I was just phoning it in. It's very Erinys centric because I couldn't really think of scenes for Finn. I don't want to go through the motions with him and Leif/Nanna and I don't want to repeat the same angsting stuff with him either that I've already had him go through. I wanted to have the scene of Fee's pegasus being named and I also wanted the scene of Arthur joining them. I still haven't decided whether Arthur and Fee will be a pair or not.
But that first scene though. Sometimes dreams can really taunt you.
Next chapter is going to be the end of Part II. Be prepared because it's going to be the emotional nadir of this story.
Miscellaneous notes: Would Finn actually call Erinys "queen?" Maybe if he actually knew that she was a queen now. But this is a dream so he's not behaving exactly like how he would actually behave. Fee is still a bit younger than I would think a first-time pegasus rider would be, but 10 years old is a good place to set it. I only had Misha be the one to discover Arthur because I was too lazy to make another OC. I think she'll show up in a scene in the next chapter to explain her leaving Silesse. The merchant by the way is Lewyn because it was said in a developer's notes once that Lewyn taught Arthur how to use magic. They don't know it's Lewyn though and he never shows himself to them during Part II. I actually thought about making a scene where Finn feels some sort of physical attraction to Lachesis. It wouldn't be dissimilar from the scene where Lewyn admitted that he used to crush on Erinys, just a way to lampshade on this fic pulling me away from my "natural" pairings. I cut it because I felt it was a distraction. Scene towards the end is foreshadowing on Ced leaving to find Finn.
Take care over the next week.

A Kinder End
Genre: Fluff and angst
Pairings: Diarmuid (Fate/Zero) x reader
Wordcount: 2000+
My requests and askbox are open, so pretty please don't be shy.
Masterpost
*~*~*
“Lancer, prepare yourself! I can’t hold this spell for long.” Lancer readied himself at [Name]’s words. “God of the North wind, Boreas, God of the East wind, Eurus, God of the South wind, Notus, God of the East wind, Zephyus, Your faithful servant besieged you to lend get your strength so that she may vanquish her mighty foe!”
The wind tore her hair away from her usual bun, letting it whip freely around her. Had it been any other time, Lancer would have appreciated the sight of her unbound black tress. As it was, the wind she summoned started to clear a path to Caster. Lancer tensed up as her wind went closer and closer to Caster. ‘Come on…Just a bit more…’ Just as Lancer caught a glimpse of Caster, her spell failed and she collapsed.
“My lady…!” Luckily, he managed to catch her just before she hit the ground and lowered her down gently. Saber and Rider, who had stopped their assault on Caster when [Name] started her spell, prepared to resume their assault on Caster. Rider offered to buy them time to think of another plan to defeat Caster as [Name]’s plan had failed. Lancer didn’t hesitate to break Gáe Buidhe so that Saber could defeat Caster. His number one priority was to get [Name] to safety now that she was unconscious and vulnerable. However, he had to ensure that Caster was defeated first so he stood at the water’s edge cradling [Name] carefully as he watched Saber defeat Caster.
~*~*~*~*~*~*
Lancer laid [Name] down as gently as possible at an abandoned building. It was unfortunately the best place that he could find for now.
“Lan…cer?”
“My lady!” *Her eyes narrowed for a brief moment before they relaxed again. It was a testament to her weariness that she didn’t even bother to correct him.
“Where are we?” “An abandoned building, my lady. I apologise, it was the best…” Lancer trailed off as [Name] raised a hand to silence him. They both kept silent as [Name]’s eyes darted around, absorbing every minute detail of their surroundings.
“Diarmuid, where’s Gáe Buidhe?”
“I…broke it so that Saber could defeat Caster. I apolo…” This time, [Name] pushed herself up and placed a finger upon Lender’s lips to silence him. They stayed as they were for what seemed to be an eternity until [Name] collapsed upon Lancer’s chest. What meagre strength she had accumulated from her brief rest had been spent.
“You are apologising a lot today, aren’t you, Diarmuid?” asked [Name], her tone mildly scolding.
“I apolo-“
“You are doing it again, Diarmuid. You have no reason to apologise to me, after all, you merely did what you thought was best at that moment. Besides, we are a team, not master and servant.”
By the end of her short speech, her voice was scarcely a whisper. If not for their proximity, he would have never heard it.
“My lady…”
Suddenly, Lancer tensed up and he tightened his hold on [Name].
“Diarmuid?”
“Someone’s here.”
“Go, Diarmuid.”
“My lady…”
“Go on, I await your return.”
“Yes, my lady.”
He hated to leave [Name] alone, especially when she was so vulnerable but he couldn’t disobey her either. He wasn’t very surprised when it was Saber who met him in the courtyard of the abandoned building. At the very least, they would finally be able to finish their battle.
~*~*~*~*~*~*
She watched from her spot as the two servants fought it out. Such honourable warriors, there were no one more deserving of the title ‘Heroic Spirits. She was glad to have met them despite her reluctance to enter this war in the first place.
Suddenly, a shadow was casted upon her and she looked up to see Kiritsugu pointing a gun at her.
“Mr. Kiritsugu, how…expected,” she whispered quietly as her lips formed a small, wry smile.
He put his finger to his lips in the universal gesture of silence. She cocked her head to the side. In response, Kiritsugu hands her a scroll.
‘A Self-Geas Scroll. A magical item used by Magi to form an unbreakable contract. Binding spell… Affected Party: Emiya Kiritsugu. The Emiya family crest orders the following. The pledge is to be observed by the affected party upon fulfilment of the conditions described herein. Pledge: Kiritsugu, son of Norikata and the fifth descendant of the House of Emiya, will be forever forbidden from harming or intending to harm, [Name] [Middle Name] [Last Name]. Condition…’
After reading the scroll, she looked at Kiritsugu searchingly. She gathered the magick stored at the amulet around her neck before speaking into his mind. To his credit, he didn’t even flinch. In fact, the only outwardly respond he showed was the slight widening of his eyes.
‘I won’t do it.’
Kiritsugu responded by pulling the safety of his gun.
‘After all, it doesn’t matter, does it? You are going to kill me either way. A master without a servant can form a pact with another servant and you can ill afford that.’
For a moment, she thought that she saw a shadow of surprise pass through Kiritsugu’s face.
‘Kill me, Emiya Kiritsugu. Let me be but another life you sacrificed in your quest to save the world. However, will you listen to this girl’s final wish?’
He lowered his gun slightly and she took it as her cue to continue.
‘Ensure that my death isn’t instant.’
This time, she definitely saw the surprise on his face. She smirked. It was a highly unusual wish as most people hoped for the opposite.
‘I wish to say farewell to Lancer.’
He nodded and shot her in the aorta, ensuring that it gazed the aorta so that she would bleed out in 5 minutes.
‘Thank you.’
The gunshot rang across the abandoned building.
Lancer’s head whipped towards the direction where the gunshot came from so fast that he gave himself whip splash. He immediately abandoned his stalemate with Saber when he saw that the gunshot came from where he had left [Name].
“My lady!”
He raced towards her, hoping against hope that she wasn’t shot. His heart had never been filled with such rage as when he saw her bleeding from where he left her with Emiya Kiritsugu standing over her holding a gun. He readied his lance to slay the miscreant who dared to harm his lady.
“Diarmuid!”
Her voice was authoritative and they had been together long enough to know that she wanted him to stand down. He tore his gaze from where he was glaring at Kiritsugu to look at her. He barely registered the shocked gasps of Saber behind him.
Her right hand on her chest was stained with blood while she used her left hand to gesture for him to come to her side. He approached her while keeping Kiritsugu in his line of sight. As he got closer, Kiritsugu backed away to give them some privacy.
He dropped down on his knees next to her as she smiled at him. Her face was paler than he had ever seen and that only makes the blood on her lips stand out even more starkly. He held her gently and lowered her carefully to not aggravate her wound so that her head rested on his knees in hopes of making her more comfortable.
***His clothes changed to the daily wear that [Name] had bought for him and he made to tear it apart to make some makeshift bandages.
“Lea…ve it.”
“My lady…”
“Leave. It.”
“My lady, I can see the blood on your clothes.”
She opened her mouth to answer him but more blood merely dribbled out of the corner of her mouth. Instead, she spoke into his mind.
*‘Is that so? I will find even darker clothes next time then.’
She tilted her head to the scroll resting innocently at her side so he picked it up and read it. His eyes widened with understanding as he read it.
“My lady! You should have let me die.”
‘Do I seem like such a heartless person to you, Diarmuid? I would never even think of sacrificing another’s life for mine.’
“I don’t mean to insult you, my lady, but I have already died once.”
‘It doesn’t matter. Kiritsugu had no intentions of allowing me to live either way.’
“But…”
“My servant. By her Command Seal, [Name] [Middle Name] [Last Name] orders you, Lancer, to not take revenge upon…” she coughed, causing blood to bubble out of her mouth. “Emiya Kiritsugu or anyone else that you hold responsible for her death.”
“My lady!”
“By my Command Seal, I order you to return to the spirit world upon my death. And by my Command Seal, I order you to not form a pact with another master for the duration of the 4th Holy Grail War.”
More blood spilt from mouth and her face was bone white.
“My lady! How can you possibly expect me to do such things?”
‘You will do it, either because I commanded you or as a deathbed promise to me. And no more of that my lady nonsense, I have used up all three Command Seals and therefore am no longer your master. Call me [Name] at least once before I go, please?’
“My…[Name].”
A wide, genuine smile spread across her face and suddenly, she looked as if she was full of life despite the blood seeping out of her. Using the last of her strength, she spoke into the minds of Diarmuid and Kiritsugu respectively.
‘Don’t despair. Let’s meet again in another life, Diarmuid.’
‘The ends don’t justify the means, Emiya Kiritsugu.’
Lancer’s heart clenched as she raised her right hand to stroke his face, her eyes memorizing every feature of his face hungrily before her hand fell and her eyes closed for all eternity.
“[Name]…! [Name]…! Please…come back…!”
He rocked back and forth while holding her tightly to him, his lithe body wracked with sobs. He brushed her hair from her face and the memory of brilliant smile she had gifted him with when he called her by name only made him sob harder. If he knew how happy it would have made her, he would have called her by name more often, propriety be damned. If only he had disobeyed her and stayed with her, she would still be alive.
How could life be this cruel? She was a powerful magus with a bright future ahead of her and suddenly, it was gone. She was no more than another life lost during the Holy Grail War.
How desperately he wanted to take revenge for her death and yet her words bound her. He couldn’t bear to disappoint her, even in death.
~*~*~*~*~*~*
*
“My lady, why are all your clothes black?” Diarmuid was curious, never had he seen a woman who wore nothing but black.
“Black is my favourite colour. Besides, doesn’t it look good on me?” she asked as she gave a little twirl.
Black did look good on her. It emphasised the paleness of her skin and made her eyes look bigger. Her lips, painted black as well stood out starkly against her pale skin. It also made her look slender and intimidating despite her diminutive height.
“Finally, you can’t really see blood on me if I’m wearing black, right?”
“My lady!”
“Kidding… Don’t be so uptight, Diarmuid,” said [Name] while giggling.
~*~*~*~*~*~*
**
“Diarmuid.”
“Yes, my lady?”
“Stop calling me ‘my lady’. I have already said it many times but we are a team and therefore equals. Call me [Name].”
“I’m afraid that I can’t do so, my lady. It would be highly improper to call you by your name.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*
***
“Diarmuid, do you have nothing else to wear?”
“I’m afraid that this is my only outfit, my lady.”
“Well, you certainly can’t go out like that. Let’s go shopping.”
“My lady, there’s …there’s no need to trouble yourself!”
“It’s no trouble at all. Besides, I have been wanting to explore the shops here anyways. How about this? You be my bag carrier for the day and I buy you an outfit as a thank you present?”
“Al…Alright, my lady.”
(Time skip)
“So, so? What do you think?”
“You have good taste, my lady.”
“Of course.”
Lancer couldn’t help but admire his outfit that consist of a dark green shirt, black pants and black shoes paired with a black vest in the mirror.
“As a bonus, we match too,” said [Name] as she gave a twirl in her black dress with dark green embellishments.

Tired Daily Life Headcanons
Even when tired and FGO is on maintenance, I can't help but think of these headcanons for specific days I haven't written in Passing Days. More so since I'm trying to finish the next chapter atm. So here they are for reading.
------------------------------
Whenever Vy is having a "tired" day, all the Grailed Servants (known as the "Big Three" to everyone in Chaldea) seem to set themselves up for a routine.
Robin is usually the one set to wake Vy up, because he's "cozy" and good at waking up a Vy who's a cuddly nonverbal "zombie" when getting up from bed. When asked, he'll just shrug his shoulders and say, "It's the cloak." No one denies it. It helps that no one has seen Robin smoke once whenever Vy's in the room. The scent of mint has been increasingly common to find on Robin's clothes, instead.
Arturia usually doesn't get her own breakfast until Vy comes into the Dining Hall, instead taking the time to discuss with Archer EMIYA the best choices Vy could have and ordering the "absolute best" once a decision is made between them. No one bats an eye at Saber not even ordering as much anymore, simply because part of her portion always goes to Vy's usually small tray to help with regaining energy. It doesn't help that the other Knights of the Round Table (particularly, Bedivere, Gawain, Lancelot, and Tristan - Mordred can be here-there depending on his mood) started fussing over Vy because of how much Arturia hovered. So, there's lots of mashed potatoes and tea in the kitchen. And if any food fights or mishaps happen in the Dining Hall, Arturia and her legion of knights are always the first ones at the scene.
Achilles usually gets any beverages that'll help Vy not fall over on her feet later in the day, ranging from water to energy drinks, just because forcing a normal human person into being the Master for more than 100 Servants still takes a lot of prana in spite of Chaldea's support. Staff can occasionally find Achilles conversing with Chiron on relaxation methods, constantly tapping his foot as if to be ready to dash to Vy's side at any notice.
During the day, it's become increasingly common to find any team formation Vy makes to have at least one of the Big Three close by. They just can't leave her alone when she's training up new Servants, after all. Mash is often around too, because Vy, even when tired, still loves the kouhai a lot and wants her to be around. There seems to be an unsaid agreement between all four of them that, so long as one of them is near Vy's side, it'll be okay. Archer EMIYA, Marie, D'eon, Diarmuid, and Medea are all okay with it too.
In late afternoons bordering the evenings, Achilles ends up running to find Robin and/or Arturia as soon as possible, because most likely, Vy's trying to do more missions while finally starting to doze off from the day's hubbub ("No overwork allowed!" someone can occasionally hear bellowed from the hallways). Blanket/cape/mantle burritos (made up of Chaldea comforters and Noble Phantasms, yep) are what the staff find Vy in before dinner, because the Servants finally got to her and made her take her daily nap with them on watch.
The Big Three end up taking turns carrying Vy to dinner, blankets and all, after her nap's over. No one knows who started it, but Arturia's the one who keeps track of whose turn it is. If it's Achilles' turn, Vy is usually pressing her nose into the back of his shoulder thanks to him carrying her piggyback style. If it's Robin or Arturia's turn, Vy's being carried bridal/princess-carry style, just because it's easier for them to check on how she's doing.
All of the Big Three then made it a habit to sit next to Vy (along with Mash) once meals are ordered. They have a reserved table in the Dining Hall at this point. Some of the staff are still betting on when Vy's going to notice everyone in the group watching her as she eats (they do this to make sure she eats everything), but she hasn't found out that last part yet. She always takes off her glasses whenever she eats, so that always flies over her head. It's common to find Mash and/or one of the Big Three reaching over to hold Vy's hand every now and then during those shared mealtimes, though. Vy hasn't discouraged them from doing it - if anything, those little bits of physical touch make it easier for her to smile.
These kinds of days always end with one of the Big Three going with Mash to tuck Vy into bed after some tactics review for the next bunch of missions. No one really relaxes until Vy falls asleep and even then, one person always stays to keep watch for the next few hours. Just in case of any dream-snatching. No one really liked Shimosa, after all. Arturia, Robin, and Achilles take shifts, taking naps of their own between each shift to keep up their own energy. They just let it all go once Vy wakes up the next morning to hug them and whisper, "Thank you."
In "tired" days, Vy can't be left alone, and as much as Goredolf initially complained about it ("What is with this unequal treatment?!" he said once, only to immediately regret it once the Big Three were glaring at him), no one's disturbed it.
Vy's always happier the next day and hugging the Big Three and Mash a lot harder afterwards. So it works.

Yay! Requests are open! Could I get some fluff with Caster Cú and Diarmuid for when they first enter their SOs room and find it absolutely covered with plants, herbs, and flowers, even though she’s typically a combat oriented mage?
Reminder that request box is still closed, and this request is from the last time it was open.
Caster Cu
Cu is definitely surprised, and impressed. It’s hard to take care of so many plants at once, and even harder so to make sure cross pollination doesn’t occur.
Honestly, when he first steps into the room, he’s not sure if he’s in the right place or not. The placard out there clearly said your name right? So was he really in the right place or did he wander into Chaldea’s arboretum? But your bed is there and so is your table, although your table is almost overrun with the amount of plants on it. Your bed looked uncomfortably out of place from his perspective, even if you were chilling there while scrolling through your servant’s profiles after a long day of running through daily mission.
He takes things in stride though, and naturally ends up complimenting you for not killing your plants. I mean, come on, you’re a combat oriented mage, he never would have thought that someone like you, who fearlessly shoots a Gandr at Gilgamesh’s face, would have the tenderness to take care of plants. This does peeve you slightly - and you jokingly ask if he’d like a Gandr to the face - but the reality stays that you started growing plants because of your combative ways.
Cu’s confused by your answer until you gesture over to the small mortar and pestle on your desk. There are small bottles and containers holding some self-made salves and poultice. You explain that you don’t bother using your Mystic codes on yourself and you’d rather save it for the Servants. Your salves are mostly used for your minor cuts, and honestly you aren’t even sure if they’re potent enough for anything else.
Caster Cu might not be the most knowledgeable Caster. After all, there are just a few too many Casters that wander around touting their knowledge about life. But he knows quite a bit about self made remedies himself thanks to his time spent with Scathach. He ends up complimenting your technique and skill, surprised that everything is self taught. This flusters you and at the same time intrigues you. If Cu knew of some recipes himself, would he be willing to impart them to you? Before you get the chance to ask though, he already knows that you’re dying to know from the way your eyes widened ever so slightly.
Needless to say, after every mission now, or even during trips to singularities, Cu uses all that time to teach you what he knows while helping you take care of your precious plants.
Diarmuid
Diarmuid isn’t surprised when he walks into your room and it’s filled to the brim with plants everywhere. Though what surprises him are the white roses that are scattered across the room. With both medicinal plants and ornamental plants decorating the room, it resembled more of a garden than it did a room in which you slept in.
Though he’s not surprised now by how you always smell like flowers no matter what time of day it is. Your room is filled with them. It’s no wonder that this part of Chaldea always smells nice.
He’s curious as to why you started planting stuff. Was it a hobby that existed prior to you being in Chaldea? Or was it something that stemmed off from way before? Though he doesn’t openly ask those questions, he does ask why your only flowers - actual blooming flowers - were the white roses. When he sees the slight pout on your face and the soft way you sigh when he doesn’t recall - he feels like he messed up. Though when you softly explain that it was because it was the first flowers he ever gave you, he’s stunned. You kept them because of him? That simple though alone makes him so happy that he’s unsure how to respond.
It’s not until a while later when you admit that you started nourishing plants to relieve stress. It was fascinating seeing something grow so splendidly. Sure, they may not be able to speak to you or help you relieve your stress. But they’re presence was soothing in this time of crisis. It kind of reminded you that even if things are going badly, life will continue on, and will continue to persevere, even if people deem that world should end. Your plants inspired you to continue to do your best and it was embarrassing saying all of that when your personality was never considered “vulnerable” or “weak”. Yet when Diarmuid wraps his arms around your waist to reassure you that humanity, you feel like it’ll all be okay.

“Giving It Back To God” -- Models of Faith in the Movie “Pilgrimage” -- Pt. IV: The Abba
Tumblr media
Jump to Pt. III  Jump to Pt. V
CW/TW: Mentions of blood/gore
In this piece I hope to touch on the final monastic character I intend to talk about in this series. (There is one other named monk, Brother Cathal, but he has very few lines and as such doesn’t leave enough of an impression for me to feel like I have much to say about him).
Brother Ciaran, the abbot of the monastery, is truly an abbot in the ancient sense of the word. The word Abbot comes to English from Latin and Greek, who borrowed it from Aramaic. The Aramaic word “Abba” roughly means “my father”. In the early days of monasticism, holy men (and women, who were called “Amma” (my mother)) fled civilization to cultivate a life with God in the wilderness. Gradually, these hermits were sought out by faithful laity, many of whom became monks in association with them. And thus a movement was born. These Abbas were often known for giving a word of wisdom for their students to ponder in hopes that it would lead them closer to God.
Brother Ciaran, existing many centuries after the mold of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, nevertheless is a strong example of this archetype. Like St. Antony, the founder of monasticism, he left a well-traveled life to serve God in stillness and simplicity. It is implied early on in the film that Ciaran has traveled across the known world, and may have even participated in the Crusades. Shunning glory and worldly authority, Ciaran becomes a shining example of monastic devotion and communion with God. When the Normans question him on his travels, it seems clear that Ciaran doesn’t want to talk about it. He has, in a sense, died to his old self and put on the new life in Christ. Diarmuid exemplifies integrity and purity of heart, but there is a sense in which it is easier for him because he has known nothing different. Ciaran, on the other hand, has followed the example of the apostles, to leave everything and follow Christ.
This life of prayer and holy community manifests its fruits in the way Ciaran approaches power, violence, and war, and peace. Ciaran rebukes Geraldus for being so naive and out of touch as to believe that allying with the Normans will bring anything but death and destruction to their faith and their community. Geraldus wants to use empire as a weapon of faith, but Ciaran is part of “an army that sheds no blood” (St. Clement of Alexandria). The death to self that is core to the monastic and Christian life also means a death to the ego which believes that those outside the faith are obstacles to be destroyed rather than people to be loved.
When Diarmuid asks Ciaran if there was ever peace in the Irish lands, Ciaran responds “not since the Fall.” Rather than leave Diarmuid in despair, though, he offers “a word” that is both a comfort and a challenge. (Note: I’m paraphrasing). “Peace takes time to grow. It must be cared for. And there are not many men in these times willing to care for it.”
When the brigands have captured Ciaran at the behest of the Normans, the young lord Raymond de Merville tortures Ciaran with the intent of getting him to tell them where the relic has been taken. Ciaran refuses, but says no word of hatred or rebuke towards Raymond. Even when his guts are being torn out by a Crusader torture device, he repeats only prayers of forgiveness for himself and his killer, and he invokes the name of Jesus. This can speak to a number of facets of faith. First, there is the true meaning of martyrdom. Ciaran is not seeking to die. He is not a Crusader, looking for reward for killing “infidels” or dying in battle. This ideal of “martyrdom” is clearly exposed as the falsehood that it is, in that all the Crusader characters except for the Mute (who we’ll get to later) display nothing but contempt for gentleness, love, humility, true piety and all the things that the Irish monks seek. But Ciaran witnesses to his faith by not betraying the relic into the hands of those who would seek to abuse it. Ultimately, his silence is not about the relic itself. It is about one kind of faith versus another. Ciaran will not allow the Normans to twist the message of Christ into one of war and conquest, whether physical or spiritual. And so he commits to silence, even at the cost of his own life. As he dies, he exemplifies the spirit of the monastic lifestyle: praying for the forgiveness of all, and having the name and presence of Christ constantly on one’s lips and in one’s heart. The fact that he can do this while being literally disemboweled is a testament to how God dwells within him and has transformed Ciaran from the image of God into the likeness of God.
This brings us to a small note on the nature of nonviolence. To justify or condemn nonviolence wholeheartedly in all cases is beyond the scope of this essay. It’s also worth noting that Ciaran, being tied to a post, is not really in a position to fight his captor. However, it is true to the monastic way of life to shed no blood, and I would argue that this film makes a strong case that nonviolence is integral to all Christian life. The characters who are sympathetic and relatable are those who shun violence wherever possible, and the ones who are hypocritical and unsympathetic are generally those who idolize violence. This is a filmmaking decision, but I do think it speaks to the truth that nonviolence is a Christian value, one which has been too often neglected in our society. There are, of course, different approaches to nonviolence. Diarmuid, a young monastic tasked with caring for the relic on its journey, mostly stays out of fights but occasionally will use nonlethal force in self defense. Ciaran takes up a course of absolute nonviolence throughout the film, and sees in this perhaps a small way of witnessing to the absurdity and injustice of the violence around him. Neither are wrong, and the approach varies based on one’s station in life and responsibilities. But nonviolence is clearly depicted as a value to strive towards, with the ultimate example being Christ, who forgave His enemies even on the cross. Not everyone is called to the same method of resistance, which is why it is valuable to analyze the different archetypes of faith in this and other films (some positive, some negative) and consider how they may be useful for application in daily life. Regardless, Ciaran does embody well the tradition of Desert spirituality and the core of monasticism, to cut off all ties to "the sin that so easily entangles” (Hebrews 12:1) and live simply, in harmony with God and all creation.

sappy shit
this is going to be sappy and I’m just warning you in advance:
tw: depression, ptsd, suicide
As it is my birthday I have been doing a lot of reflection on what a year really does, and this year has been a lot of changes. This is really just me oversharing, so if you want a tl;dr: I am better now, and if you follow any of my blogs, thank you so much. I love you all.
Anyways. I’ve been into fate for over a year now. I binge-watched both /Zero and UBW in the span of four days in the winter of 2016, played both /Stay Night and /Hollow Ataraxia by last August, and read the entirety of Fate/Strange Fake up to what had been translated by September. Since then I’ve been slowly chipping away at the rest of the fate content, working through everything and anything I could get my hands on as I waited for the next installment.
Fate/ was the reason why I wanted to start drawing more – Diarmuid specifically. I loved these characters so much, that me, a person dubbed as uncreative and a bad artist, bought a tablet and started working hard. I will not lie – my first published drawings were nothing but tracing work. When I did publish anything that was freehand, I did so very cautiously. It was a lot for me to pull my tablet out and practice, but I did so in order to work harder.
When dailyarturia opened up so that more daily fate blogs could be created, I jumped on it immediately. I made dailycaren (it’s deleted now) and drew everyday. That blog got no notes. I felt like an idiot and felt my art was even worse. I decided to delete it and restart with dailymashu, and eventually because of some attention one of my Medea posts got I then made dailymedea. Through these two blogs I’ve met some amazing people, made new friends who I can’t wait to meet in real life, gained some wonderful followers and I have a lot of love for both of those blogs, and all the others I have ran or run now.
Why these blogs were so important to me is because in under a year my life was not ok. I was cramped in a tiny apartment with my boyfriend at the time because at home I had to live with my abuser. He was not a good boyfriend for my needs and I found myself having the worst months of my life. My parents pressured me to get a job when all I wanted to do is die. When I went back to school, a new therapist (who is actually good) made me think of things I hadn’t considered before. I was tired and slept after classes because I couldn’t sleep at night with my PTSD. My grades tanked and for one of my courses, I had failed both midterms and the lab final (how I passed is still a mystery).
I told my therapist that after the first Heaven’s Feel movie I would kill myself.
I didn’t even care about watching the rest of the films – the first film would be enough for me to see if Sakura, a character who I had projected myself onto for so long because of our similar histories, was in good hands. Then I would commit suicide. I saw her story, and subsequently Caren’s after I played Hollow Ataraxia, as dreams that weren’t possible. Yet I still wanted to see if she’d be ok.
The daily blogs forced me to get up and draw. I was so worried that people would unfollow the daily blogs if I didn’t draw for them, if I didn’t make them happy. I drew to make people happy when I couldn’t do it for myself. I drew every day for dailymashu for a long time, which surprised me to no end. Yet these blogs made me do something instead of curling myself into a ball under some sheets and wish for death.
Through the blogs I got to meet some amazing people, from the other mods to my followers to some awesome rp-blogs and discord channels. I had people who cared for me. I came out of the closet as trans and started working through to start on hormone replacement therapy. I broke up with my boyfriend who would reintroduce trauma for me, and I finally worked through my own problems with liking a character that reminded me so much of my abuser.
I won’t say that everything was peachy – I’ve had bad days of course. I’ve been swept up in unnecessary drama that I wish I could redo, I’ve been petty over things that in the long term don’t matter, I’ve blocked and unblocked people and cut relationships off. It isn’t all from fate either, having come out has greatly improved my mental health as well.
However, I’ve met people who say I handle with my PTSD very well. Which seems so outlandish when last December I was going to drop out of university and go to a mental health facility for two months. It seems so weird because last year I had a plan to die. It seems so weird when my PTSD took over my entire life. That’s why I say so much has happened in the last year. I have almost become a new person.
Anyways. If you read this, thanks. If you follow me or any of the blogs I run, thank you. If you message me pictures of Kirei or Caren, thanks, I really do love those. I love you all,
Alistair.

Chaldean Master Vy (Character Profile)
Roughly inspired by @panyum’s enthusiasm for my most recent artwork, it’s about time I divulge more on the Mastersona/main protagonist of Passing Days, Vy. Here we go.
Name: Vy
Age: 17-18 (beginning of Part 1), 19-20 (by Lostbelt 3)
Gender: Cis-female
Orientation: Asexual/Demisexual (questioning) and Demiromantic
Closest Servants: Mash Kyrielight (Level 80), Arturia Pendragon (Level 100), Achilles (Level 100), Marie Antoinette (Level 80), Robin Hood (Level 100), Archer EMIYA (Level 80), Diarmuid Ua Duibhne (Lancer - Level 70), Medea (Level 70), Chevalier D’eon (Level 80), Sieg (Level 80), Chiron (Level 80), Scathach-Skadi (Level 90), Sitonai (Level 90), Ereshkigal (Level 90), Ruler Martha (Level 80), Katsushika Hokusai (Level 90).
Notable Facts:
In another place, Vy would have lost her life in a car crash and reincarnated into another world as a civilian pianist, but in FGO’s timeline, she was scouted by Chaldea before she could start her second quarter in college. Chaldea had noticed her family lineage having some kind of Mystic aspects through a blood test she had taken for a yearly checkup before donating blood to a local blood drive. It resulted in them reaching out to her for an “extracurricular volunteer opportunity” that no college student could refuse. Vy would accept, albeit with her parents encouraging her, not realizing it would later lead her to becoming the main Chaldean Master in the Grand Order.
Vy went into Chaldea thinking she’d be a medical assistant from her resume stating her interest in science and medicine, only to find herself drafted into the Rayshift training that the FGO protagonist went through in canon as a result of her impressive stamina (thanks to biking miles around their home in America with her parents when growing up), tiring herself from all the shifting to the point of nearly dozing off in one of Chaldea’s hallways if not for Mash.
The “Mystic” part of Vy’s blood that drew Chaldea’s attention was something Vy’s parents nor grandparents were actually aware of, no thanks to how all grew up in poverty in Vietnam before coming to America and later, Japan, but it is actually from one of Vy’s ancestors coming in contact with a mage from the Mage’s Association. No one really knows what exactly happened between said ancestor and that mage, but it seems to explain Vy’s uncanny luck in getting some of the bigger names in the Throne of Heroes before confronting Goetia, including Arjuna, Minamoto no Raikou, and Achilles by the dawn of Camelot. Her luck has definitely made the Crypters scratch their heads, since Vy had used a nearly Fully Ascended Scathach-Skadi to take down Kadoc before having reached Scandinavia.
Vy adores Mash a lot, both from how earnest Mash is and her eagerness to learn about everything of the outside world past Chaldea’s blizzards. Dr. Roman at one point commented that they looked like sisters, just once, and Vy latched onto Mash as a surrogate little sister since, being conscientious of Mash’s health whenever they Rayshift together.
Since Vy’s family took her on a lot of cross-country road trips when growing up, including visiting national parks such as Yosemite and Zion to hike and sight-see, one of Vy’s goals when going into the Grand Order is making sure Mash gets to experience all nature has to offer one day like she did, wanting to introduce her to her parents when the fighting is all over. She has jokingly asked Dr. Roman and Da Vinci for adoption papers for her parents to sign for Mash.
When starting in Singularity F, Vy was initially scared of paving the way to Humanity’s salvation, but sucked it up once Mash saved her. At that moment, one of the thoughts running through her head was, “Mash is fighting so hard, so why can’t I?!” Since then, Vy has made quite the distinct image of herself when fighting with her Servants, being a no-nonsense leader who can and will sarcastically snark at anyone, including Kiara and BB of all people, when they are opposing her. To allies, she is both understanding and empathic, usually not asking any imposing questions and issuing orders only when emergencies call for it.
Anyone who tries to “bed” her will spark a loud and angry reaction, since Vy is not interested in any sexual relations and instead is still loyal to her family and friends that were left to the dust by Goetia and later the Foreign God. Expect some cursing too.
Vy’s romantic orientation is why Agartha is an untouched subject amongst all the Servants when bringing in new faces, because when Dahut in Drake’s body proposed rape to her outright during the Pseudo-Singularity, Vy’s reaction was basically, “I AM ACE, YOU JERK! SEX IS NOT FOR ME, CONSENT MATTERS, SO SHUT UP AND FIGHT ALREADY! IF NOT, I WILL KILL YOU WITH A RUSTY SPOON MYSELF, GODDAMMIT!” It’s another reason why Fergus and some of the other romantically inclined Servants such as Kiyohime and Elizabeth Bathory have kept their distance since, because Vy’s rage point back then was that unsettling. Robin Hood doesn’t bring up the subject of picking up girls in front of her anymore. D’Eon and Astolfo both have tried to keep Vy away from thinking about Dahut since.
The first Servants Vy ever summoned in the Grand Order was Lancer Diarmuid, Medea, and Chevalier d’Eon. The first 4-stars she ever summoned after them was Marie Antoinette and Archer EMIYA, so because of this and a lot of other things, all five Servants still find themselves in the occasional team because Vy grew that attached to them.
Her only Grailed Servants so far are Saber Arturia Pendragon, Rider Achilles, and Archer Robin Hood, both because they were there when fighting opponents such as the Lion King, Tiamat, and the Alter Egos in SERAPH, and how she loved all three of them for their legends even before coming to Chaldea.
When Vy first got a Holy Grail, she tried to give it to Mash as thanks for Mash protecting her for so long, but because of Mash’s status as a designer baby and Demi-Servant, she wasn’t able to take it. Instead, Mash still finds herself at the front lines team Vy has for mixed enemy battles, since Vy can’t find it in her to leave Mash behind.
Some of the Servants who have been with Vy longer find themselves getting a nickname for Vy to call out to just them, all because Vy sees them as part of her family and wants to be good to them. Robin Hood is a prominent example, where she calls him “big Robin” as a way to boost his confidence about being a Heroic Spirit, and in turn, he calls her “little sparrow.” Marie Antoinette is sometimes called “my Queen,” and some of the more younger Servants such as Illya and Miyu are called with the “-chan” honorific or “baby sis.” Mash never got a nickname simply because to Vy, “Mash is Mash, and I love your name.” There were many “awww”s.
It’s because of how she affectionately considers a majority of her Servants family that a lot of them tone down their arguments and bad qualities in her presence, simply because she’s there. An example is how during Babylonia, Vy had answered at the Underworld’s gates, “Ereshkigal is more beautiful!” to Ishtar’s face, both because she had summoned Ereshkigal long before entering Babylonia and that she had known Eresh longer. Eresh, who hadn’t Rayshifted to the Singularity at the time, could be found later hiding her red face in her hands as Da Vinci laughed out loud. Dr. Roman meanwhile had looked like he had swallowed a lemon at the time because of how blatantly Vy had put down Ishtar, and Ishtar barely reacted. Vy’s only reasoning afterwards was, “I did not appreciate being made into a makeshift cushion in our first meeting, Ishtar, thank you very little.”
There were a lot of times during Singularities where Vy, feeling bad for Dr. Roman being a butt-monkey of jokes, brought home a souvenir or two for the good doctor to take part in some of the better moments of the Grand Order. One such souvenir was a butter cake slice from Siduri in Babylonia, because he expressed wanting to eat it one night and she carefully preserved it with Mash to give it to him before confronting “Solomon” in the Temple of Time. It’s because of this that she dearly misses him, having found him as another surrogate father when he’d call her in for daily check-ups and talks over how Mash was doing.
When the Lostbelts happened, Vy started working a lot harder to raise her Servants and the morale of the rest of Chaldea’s staff, resulting in her gaining eyebags from losing sleep over too many Golden Apples and farming quests. Most of the Servants are all at Final Ascension and Max Level at the cost of this and QP, but it’s helped in making the Crypters lose some of their momentum.
Hope this helps in giving some nice insight and lore!

Former Interpol Chief Pleads Guilty to $2M in Bribes
Former Interpol Chief Meng Hongwei has re-emerged after disappearing for nearly a year, pleading guilty to accepting more than $2 million in bribes and expressing remorse for his alleged crime. According to the state-run Global Times: Meng, also the former head of China's Coast Guard, was accused by prosecutors of taking advantage of the convenience, power and status generated from his posts to seek benefits for others, illegally accepting money and gifts worth more than 14.46 million yuan from 2005 to 2017, the People's Daily reported. “Meng pleaded guilty to the charges and repented at the trial at the First Intermediate People's Court of Tianjin. “The court was adjourned and a verdict will be made at a later date. “Meng was expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and dismissed from public office for serious violations of Party discipline and laws, China's top anti-graft body, the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission, announced in a statement on March 27, the Xinhua News Agency reported. “Meng was elected as president of Interpol, based in Lyon, France, in 2016, becoming the first Chinese official to take the post. Before serving as Interpol president, Meng was vice minister of public security and head of China Coast Guard.” Meng’s wife, Grace, claims China has made up a “fake case” against her husband for political reasons. She told the Associated Press: "I love him, trust him, respect him and am proud of him. No matter how they insult him or frame him, they can’t change the facts: He is worthy of his motherland, worthy of police honor, and worthy of the people who love him," adding "The international community will know the truth." The AP also reports that Meng’s confession was read aloud, guaranteeing a conviction. And while admitting guilt and expressing regret usually results in leniency from Chinese courts, Beijing in recent years has been keen to hand down life sentences on government officials deemed to be corrupt or disloyal. Dublin, Ireland, Jan 13, 2019 / 04:18 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- With the dawn of legal abortion in Ireland, the pro-life movement in the country is beginning a fight that their U.S. counterparts have been engaged in since 1973.
For more than 40 years, pro-life Americans have staged marches, prayer vigils, sidewalk counseling, and political protests. Now, pro-life advocates in Ireland must determine how a robust pro-life movement should look in their country when abortion is legal.
Earlier this week, after hearing news of a group of pro-life protesters who gathered outside of a medical center in Ireland for several hours, holding signs with slogans such as “Say no to abortion in Galway,” Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin urged caution.
While everyone “has a right to make a protest,” he told The Irish Times, General Practitioners perform surgeries for “everybody…for all sorts of reasons.”
He added that he is “not a person personally for protest, what the Church should be doing is strengthening its resolve to help women in crisis and to educate people.”
The word “protest” is a touchy one in the pro-life world. It can conjure up images of angry mobs with torches and pitchforks, so some pro-life people prefer terms like “witness” or “sidewalk counselor,” or simply a faithful person at a prayer vigil.
But for many in the U.S. pro-life movement, it is dialogue and prayer – not protest – that are at the heart of what they do.
Mary Fisher is one of those people.
Fisher had an abortion herself, that caused her deep regret, anger and pain for years. After she found healing through a Bible study, Fisher now works as a regional coordinator for Silent No More, an organization that gives women who regret their abortions a platform from which to tell their stories, and connects women who have had abortions to healing ministries.
While Fisher participates in pro-life activism, she is opposed to the term “protest.”
“Protesting is kind of an anger thing. That's the way it's perceived,” Fisher told CNA. “This makes me mad, so I'm going to go out and protest, because it makes me so mad.”
But there is already so much anger from people who are pro-choice or who have had an abortion, that the only way to win them over is with love, Fisher said.
“Our world is so full of anger, and it's like, ‘Oh my gosh, I've got this baby inside me that I don't want, and everybody says it's just a bunch of cells. So I'm just going to flush it down the toilet.’ And we do it in anger.”
Fisher herself experienced that anger after her own abortion.
“I lived as an angry woman for so many years, that one of my daughters actually moved from Colorado…to New York to get as far away from me as possible, because I was just so angry at everything.”
Fisher said the only thing that will win over those who are pro-abortion is to love them.
That doesn’t mean Fisher does not participate in the pro-life movement. She’s planning on attending her local March for Life, with a sign that says: “I regret my abortion. Ask me why.”
She also participates in 40 Days for Life prayer vigils, she shares her story through talks, and she helps connect women in need of healing from abortion to bible studies or retreats that can help them.
But ultimately, she says, abortion will never change through political protest, because abortion is not fundamentally a political issue.
“Abortion is not a political issue. Abortion is a heart issue. And until we get to the heart, nothing's going to change,” she said.
“Protest is how we create friction. Just the word protest… just the thought of a protest is angry people, angry people with knives and swords and forks out to fight. This is a fight against principalities. It is not against flesh and blood.”
Shawn Carney is the president and CEO of 40 Days for Life, a popular form of pro-life activism that holds prayer vigils outside of local abortion clinics throughout the United States. The 40-day long campaigns of “prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism” have the goal of “repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion,” according to their mission statement.
It’s not a protest, it’s a prayer vigil, Carney told CNA.
“We take the approach of praying in front of the (clinics) because abortion is overwhelming. And it ends the life of a human being and it causes a woman to think she has no other option than to pay a physician to end the life of her child. And so in that great hopelessness, our Lord is the answer. And his joy is the answer, and his mercy is the answer,” Carney said.
The campaign has seen great success in turning the hearts of both abortion doctors and women considering abortions. Since its beginning in 2004, the organization knows of some 200 abortion facility workers who have had a change of heart and left their job, and over 15,000 women who have chosen life, during a 40 Days campaign.
It’s also often an entry point for people who have never participated in any kind of pro-life activism, Carney said.
“We've had 800,000 people participate in 40 Days for Life around the world in 50 different countries, and 30 percent of them said this is the first thing they ever did in the pro-life movement,” Carney said. “It has served as a great point of entry because it is peaceful and because it's effective.”
But there is one word from Archbishop Martin’s comments that Carney does take issue with: caution. “I don't agree with using the word caution with opposing abortion right now in Ireland,” he said.
“I think they need to do just the opposite…and I think that the Irish have been too timid and a little too cautious with their approach to abortion. Now they have it. And that happened to us here in the United States. Shamefully, we're the example of this. We were cautious. We were timid. And now we have 61 million children that have been aborted.”
Instead, he said, the Irish should not lost hope, and should cling to God and to their lively Irish heritage, and use that in their advantage to continue to fight legalized abortion.
“The last thing the Irish should do is to throw their hands up in the air…I think they need to get out there. The Irish are a courageous people,” Carney said, adding that he is of Irish descent.
“The Irish aren't cautious with anything, right? They're the loudest and they're the most fun and they like to sing and they have hot tempers. And they take their history and their country seriously,” he said.
“And this, more than any other time in their history, they need to do the same and they need to joyfully go out and witness the love and the hope and the mercy to those women who now think that Ireland is just a free for all to have an abortion.”
There are forms of activism that don’t belong in the pro-life movement, Carney added. Anything violent or with an intent to do harm “aren’t part of the pro-life movement,” he said. He’s seen people driven away from even peaceful forms of pro-life activism after bombings or murders of abortion doctors have taken place, he added.
“And so the archbishop doesn't want that in their country. Who does?” he said.
“No bishop or no politician or no pro-life advocate in any other country is saying, ‘I want violence in my country to oppose abortion.’ No one's ever said that, but they all should encourage the peaceful, public opposition to this because abortion is certainly a public issue.”
Even though abortion is a heavy issue, Carney said his message to pro-life Ireland is to hope.
“There's practical things: there's 40 Days for Life campaigns they need to do in Ireland. They need to have a March for Life. They need to get to work and we can help them do that,” he said.
“But the bigger picture is looking down, going to your knees in prayer and reflecting: ‘What is going to be my response? What am I going to tell my children and my grandchildren now that I, as an Irish person living in this country that I love, we have abortion now. And what's going to be my response?’”
“And for that, we need to go to the Gospels.”
