I’ve seen many Precure tournaments on this website, but none dedicated to one of the most catchy aspects of Precure: it’s music!

Welcome to the Pretty Cure Opening Showdown, where every single Precure OP will go head to head, to see which song is most beloved!

I matched every OP chronologically, except in cases where I needed some minor rearranging to make sure an OP was pitted against its alternate version in the first round, and the English OPs were grouped together at the end. You’ll also notice a three way split between The Great Pretty Cure Gathering and it’s two alternate versions, Light of Hope and Flower of Life, both because of an otherwise uneven number and also to condense each song into it’s Best Version before everyone really starts duking it out.

Linked songs will be their TV edits, as they would be heard before an episode/movie, and wherever possible I’ll embed the OP itself, not just audio.

Kick the cat out of the bag!

Warning: If you like Adrien Agreste/Chat Noir you should turn back because I'm salty at this boy and the creators of this show and I won't hold back.

Chapter 7: The second entry: Frozen Feelings

You saw Adrien coming near you and Marinette and made yourself battle ready.

Oh, you had wondered when he would have the balls to finally talk to you again.

Even more perfect he choose to talk to you now! So you could show Marinette the true colors of her crush.

“Hey, girls.”, he greeted you friendly. “You have fun?”

Marinette stopped hugging you and faced her crush. You were sad that she ended your guy’s hug, but you would never force anybody.

“Erm, yes, and you, Adrien?”, she asked shyly and played nervously with her fingers.

Before Adrien could answer you forestall him: “Cut the act Agreste, I talked with Kagami. Say what you want to say and then go.”

You crossed your arms and fixed him with a look that could melt the ice around you.

Marinette was confused about what was going on. Her eyes got back and forth between you and Adrien. There was an angry atmosphere in the air. She didn’t get why you seemed to hate Adrien.

How could someone hate Adrien? He was perfect.

Adrien did start to sweat under your look. Never had anybody looked at him with such hate as you have.

But he needed to talk to you! He needed his lady and Paris citizens back on his side. Mostly of course his lady.

“Erm, right, I wanted to talk about your blog.”, he started.

With your ice skate, you tipped on the ice rink.

“I don’t have the whole day.”, you said with a fake cute smile. “Say what you said to Kagami or we can forget all this.”

“What is going on?”, wanted Marinette to know.

She had a bad feeling in her gut. Something not good was definitely up.

Like Marinette was his lifeline Agreste turned to her and smiled: “You will agree with me, right Marinette? You always are so levelheaded.”

“Huh?”

“Agreste, the time is ticking.”, you remind him.

The blond boy nodded.

“Yes, right, erm…I think [L/N] you were a bit too hard on Chat Noir on your blog. I mean, Miraculous Cure fixes anything why is it so bad that Chat Noir took a break? Being a hero is hard I imagine.”, he really had the gut to say this. You felt how you started to get angry. “Now he and Ladybug seem to have problems with it each other and I find it so sad. They two are an awesome couple and are meant to be.”

Wow, it what kind of universe did he live?!

It showed how he only cared about being together with Ladybug.

Paris could become an underwater park and all its citizens’ death.

And he would probably be just sitting on a rooftop of one of the destroyed buildings and singing about he how he missed “his lady”!

Not even trying to fix all this, because his lovelife was more important.

You wanted to throw up.

And yet you were a bit fascinated by him.

How stupid was he that he now ruins his civil reputation? You don’t even have to do anything!

Well, besides giving him a piece of your mind.

You got ready to do this, but someone yelled loud and a bit hysterical: “WHAT THE FUCK, ADRIEN?!”

Not only did you stare in disbelief at the person, Adrien, and Kagami, and Luka, who were coming from their round to join you, did it too.

It was Marinette who had cursed and screamed at her crush.

She seemed ready to kick his ass!

“Oh, this is going to be good.”, you heard Kagami whisper in your ear.

You nodded floored.

“Should I get the popcorn?”, asked Luka you two.

You nodded again and Kagami gave a thumbs up.

But Luka stayed with you two to see the showdown that was about to happen.

If you were Adrien you would have run for your life, Marinette looked murderous, like an avenging goddess of ancient times.

Beautiful and deathly.

Damn, it was hot!

“It’s just me or did it get hot all of sudden?”, asked Kagami and looked at Marinette wondrously.

“Not only you.”, murmured you and Luka.

Meanwhile, Adrien looked like a little lost and wounded lamb at Marinette.

You swore he was shaking. You bet all your money he was scared shitless of her.

That didn’t stop him from opening his mouth.

“Ma-Marinette, why are you cursing at me? What did I do?”

“You are really asking?!”, she screamed offended at him and her hands turned to fists. Oh my god, if she would punch him you would ask her to marry you! “You are on the side of this sexually harassing piece of shit of a cat who doesn’t care that people ACTUALLY die and would remember it forever?! Miraculous Cure can’t fix traumas like that!”

“But-“

“Don’t even start! That you can’t even see what Chat Noir did to Ladybug as sexual harassment, is shocking! Chloe always hangs on your arm and we see you don’t like that, you should know what it is like to be touched by someone you don’t want to! Have you ever wondered how Ladybug must feel? Scarred, disgusted and yet she still carried on!”, she continued.

“Amen to that.”, agreed Kagami and you and Luka nodded.

“But Ladybug and Chat Noir are meant to be!”, he protested. “Why can’t nobody see it? Everybody got just angry over one little thing which [Y/N] filmed and now Ladybug doesn’t see anymore that she needs Chat Noir.”

“Harmony asked you to call her by her last name!”, came Marinette to your defense. “That you can’t even do that…that you are on Chat Noir side…I…I…”

“Say it Marinette.”, said Luka to her calm. “It will liberate you.”

“He needs to hear that and you need to get it out.”, told her also Kagami.

“Mari, do it. We are all here for you.”, you remind her softly.

In Marinette’s pretty blue eyes were tears and Adrien just looked lost. You couldn’t care less for him, you just hoped it would help Marinette.

“I loved you Adrien!”, she yelled so loud that you heard the ice klir. “I loved you since you gave me that umbrella in the rain and I tried so much to tell you this!”

“What?”, he said totally confused.

Marinette wasn’t even on his radar it seemed. Of course, if he was so fixed on Ladybug no wonder.

What an idiot.

Well better for you…and Luka…and Kagami it seemed.

The midnight black-haired girl pointed at him.

“You heard me right, I loved you, Adrien. I loved you so much that I did crazy and strange things just so you would take note of me. But you showed me today who the real Adrien Agreste is! I’m done with you and fuck your stupid opinions. You can go to hell with Chat Noir!”

She turned around and skated away. Marinette wanted to leave the ice ring that was clear.

“I will go after her. She needs someone.”, said Kagami, then looked at Adrien. “Never again ask me out on a date Adrien, you are dead to me.”

“We will come with you.”, told Luka.

You gave Adrien, who still seemed lost, one look and said: “Agreste, people like you and Chat Noir are the reason why our world is so fucked up. It’s best when you never again come near us four, no of us can guarantee that we wouldn’t fucking punch you in the face.”

“I prefer my saber, but a punch in the face is good too.”, agreed Kagami.

With that, you three skated after Marinette.

She would need all the comfort.

Marinette’s heart felt like it was broken into a million pieces.

Adrien, who she thought was the love of her life, for whom she made a scarf, backed any Sunday his favorite maccaron and had already planned presents for the future, whom she imaged to have a house three kids, and a hamster, turned out to be on the same level as Chat Noir.

Did she actually ever know him?

Or was she just in love with a version in her head of him?

The Adrien she thought to know, wouldn’t be like the Adrien who had said all this…this…this shit.

And yet this was the real Adrien.

Tikki cooed at her and wiped with toilet paper away her tears. She had closed herself in one of the bathroom stalls and just wanted to go home.

She wanted to burn anything Adrien related and cancel him from her narrative.

And also she wanted to cry for a lost love on her bed.

What a shit day!

There she heard knocking and your voice calling out to her: “Mari, sweetheart it’s me with Luka and Kagami. We are here for you.”

“I understand you Marinette.”, said Kagami. “I liked Adrien too and seeing his true color devasted me, but I will be there for you. I want to be a friend.”

“Marinette, please open the door or let us in.”, begged Luka. “We want to see you and give you a hug if you want.”

She sniffled and wiped a tear from her eyes. Tikki gave her a little kiss on the cheek.

“Look Marinette. You have people who care and love you. You are not alone. Let them help you and be there for you.”

“Y-Yes, that’s true, Tikki, just like you.”, she whispers to her kwami.

Tikki got back into her purse and Marinette opened the door. There you three stood and looked worried at her.

Wobbly she got up from her sit on the toilette and let herself fall in Luka’s arms.

The older boy hugged her tight and hummed a melody to calm her down. You got behind Marinette and hugged her back. You joined Luka in his humming. Kagami didn’t know what to do, so you and Luka waved her over and she hugged Marinette sideways.

“T-Thank you.”, hiccup Marinette. “I-I need that.”

“We are here, Marinette.”, repeated Kagami and you saw how she patted her head.

“We won’t go anywhere.”, you promised.

“Just cry as much as you like.”, reassured her Luka.

Marinette laughed a bit and then sniffled again: “Y-You guys are great you know that?”

“You deserve better than this Marinette.”, you cooed at her and gave the back of her head a little kiss. “You too, Kagami.”

You took Kagami’s hand and gripped it tight.

“Thank you.”, the fencer just said and gripped your hand back.

You should have known that in Paris with Papillion still out you couldn’t have a moment to really let out your emotions.

“Akuma!”, screamed Luka and you four let go of each other and faced the incoming dark butterfly.

“Oh god, it’s sure here for me!”, shrieked Marinette panicked.

“We need you to calm down!”, said Kagami and stand protective before Marinette.

You and Luka joined her too.

“Guys?”, said Marinette in wonder.

“It can’t do anything to us, we are calm!”, you explained. “Try to relax Marinette, we will somehow stop it from coming near you.”

“Run, Marinette!”, told her Luka.

You felt literal how Marinette didn’t wanted to leave you guys, but after a few seconds, you heard how she run away.

Now, what do to do about the Akuma?

“I can’t believe they are doing this for me.”, said Marinette while running to Tikki who was flying beside her.

“You need to transform fast and purify it!”, reminded her Kwami her.

Before Marinette could answer, suddenly ice burst from the ground. Shocked she stopped and even Tikki looked confused.

“What?”

“Oh no!”, gasped Tikki. “The Akuma must have gone to another person!”

“But who?!”

Oh god, did she need to fight you, Luka, or Kagami? All just because you three wanted to protect her? She couldn’t think about it now, she needed to transform!

“Let's try out Master Fu's magic-aroon.”, informed Marinette Tikki. She took out the ice macaroon and throw it in the air. “Tikki, power up!”

After she turned into her Ladybug Ice-Form, she swung herself on top of the building.

Whoever was the Akuma had turned Paris into a giant ice rink.

What should she do?

That’s when she heard someone land beside her.

She gritted her teeth.

He was still in the picture, she forgot for a second.

“Chat Noir.”, she said coldly. “What are you doing here?”

He had the nerve to harrumph at her.

“I’m a hero too, did you forget?”

How she wanted to yell at him that he said such a thing but acted most of the time that he wasn’t, but she needed him for her plan.

“Chat Noir. We need to set up a trap for whoever turned the city into a giant ice rink.”

The useless cat really told her in a bitter tone: “My feline instincts prefer to track and observe before I attack. You go your way, I'll go mine.”

She wanted to strangle him with his own belt but she had to play nice.

For now.

Master Fu would have the potion ready soon, just for today.

“Please don't tell me you're mad at me about the rose.”, she said.

“There may be a certain chill now between us.”

“I get it, but we should really focus on saving Paris right now.”

“We don't always have to do everything together, after all. It's not like we're a couple.”

With that, he skated away from her.

“I hate you so much.”, she grumbles. “Enjoy this last Akuma, Chat Noir. Tomorrow it will be over for you.”

As it turned out Phillipe the Ice Skate Instructor got the Akuma that was meant for her. Seems like Mayor Bourgeois didn’t keep his promise, if Phillipe got at least one student he wouldn’t lose his ice rink.

Should she feel bad about it that, neither you nor Kagami or Luka were the Akuma?

Maybe a bit, but she was just happy that three of her dear people weren’t akumatized.

It was stressful enough to play nice with Chat Noir when she just wanted to smash his face and take his ring.

In the end, they defeated Frozer and Paris was back to normal thanks to Miraculous Cure.

As fast as she could Marinette returned to the ice ring and found you three waiting for her at the entrance.

“Marinette!”, you called happily and started to blush as the midnight black-haired girl hugged you tight. “I’m I mean we are so happy you are okay.”

“We were worried for a second that you were akumatized.”, told her Kagami and hugged you both from the side.

Luka joined the group hug too.

“I’m just glad, that everyone is okay.”

“Where is Adrien?”, asked Marinette bitterly.

You all could nearly feel how angry and devasted she still was.

“Gone already.”, told her Kagami curtly.

“Probably for the best.”, mumbled Marinette and hugged you all tighter.

You four ended your group hug and stared at each other.

Kagami was the first to talk.

“Well, this was certainly not how I imaged this date would end.”

That made you all chuckle a bit.

“Yeah, me too.”, agreed on Marinette.

You and Luka looked at each other and nodded.

It was time to come clean.

“This was…a lot.”, said Kagami to you and Luka.

You four were sitting together in a Starbucks and you and your best friend told Kagami and Marinette all about your polyamorous spiel to get them away from Adrien.

“I normally hate lies and be lied to.”, told you Marinette and you and Luka winced. “But…this was for a good case…I wouldn’t have ever realized who Adrien was really without you guys.”

“So…are we cool, Mari, ‘Gami?”, you asked hopeful and gave your best puppy dog eyes.

Marinette and Kagami looked at each other and then nodded to you.

You swore you and Luka practically melted in your sits from relief.

“Thanks, really, we appreciate it.”, said Luka for you two.

“Wait for a second, what did you call me, [Y/N]?”, asked Kagami and titled her head cutely.

Gaah, you wanted to swoon.

“Erm, ‘Gami? Don’t you like the nickname? I won’t say it again!”

Kagami shook her head and blushed cutely.

“Nobody ever gave me a nickname…I never had really friends.”

God, that hit you all three hard in the heart.

The poor girl.

Marinette put a hand on her shoulder and smiled.

“Well, you have now three!”

Like somebody told her Christmas would come early this year, Kagami looked from you to Luka to Marinette, who just smiled at her.

“Friends?”, she repeated with a hopeful voice.

“Friends!”, said Luka and toasted with his drink to her.

Damn, you wanted more….should you just say it?

Your mouth was faster than your brain: “Actually I really enjoyed the time we four spent together, why don’t we try dating each other!”

That earned you big eyes and huge blushes from anyone. You grinned crookedly at them.

Okay, that was maybe not a good idea just saying it like this.

Luka was the first to find his voice: “Harmony, you are opening a can of worms, that I closed after you started dating Marie.”

…What?

Marie?

Your first girlfriend?

When you were twelve?

“What the fuck Couffaine?!”, you yelled and pointed at him angrily. “Are you implying you had a crush on me when we were twelve? Cause I had one on you and you started to date Pierre!”

Now he was pointed at you.

“What?! And you tell me this now? I started to date Pierre because I thought you had a crush on Marie!”

“That’s a trainwreck!”, said Marinette fascinate and Kagami had to nod.

“What the fuck? I wanted you, you idiot!”

“I’m not an idiot if you flirt like with every person you find attractive!”

You gasped offended.

Marinette turned to Kagami.

“What do you say? Should we get another orange juice and give these two time to sort out their feelings?”

The fencer nodded and took Marinette’s hand in hers, which made her blush.

“Let’s go Marinette, maybe you would like to talk about your feelings too?”

“Huh?”

With a little smile, Kagami just lead Marinette to the cashier.

She would have never thought that she would have her sexual orientation flipped over in one day, but you and Marinette were really cute.

Kagami wasn’t complaining one bit.

You fall down on your comfy bed like a sack of potatoes.

God, this day had been a rollercoaster of emotions! You were so tired and wanted to sleep for like three days.

You and Luka had long and hard discussions over your old crushes for each other, while Marinette and Kagami were drinking orange juice and getting to know each other.

They certainly had a better “first date” than you and your best friend.

If you could still call him that.

Well, nothing was official.

You and Luka agreed that there were still feelings and you wanted to explore them. But you felt something for Marinette and Kagami and Luka had already a crush on Marinette.

So you had the two sit down with you again and another discussion started.

Kagami and Marinette agreed that they had fun together with you guys and you four should do totally more things together but start a relationship?

Even a polyamorous one?

Marinette admitted that she needed time.

Time to get over Adrien.

Time to think over her sexuality.

Time to think if she really could date three people.

You all of course would give her the time.

Kagami was more open.

She admitted fast that she only wanted from Luka friendship and could only imagine having a relationship with you and Marinette.

But she asked for time too.

Actually you all needed time.

That’s what you all agreed on.

So for the time being you all would stay friends and do things with all four, or three or two together.

Do get to know each other more and maybe you would end up in a poly relationship.

Just no pressure.

Any good base for a romantic relationship, whether poly or not, was a good and solid friendship.

Like you and Luka had one.

After you all had found an agreement, Luka asked you out on a date.

You all also had agreed that the other people in this pre-poly relationship thingy should know if two or three would go out with each other.

Same if two or three wanted to make it officially.

You of course said yes and were really happy.

A date.

A real date with the boy you had loved for so long but ignored for the sake of your friendship.

You were just so happy.

Marinette and Kagami had cooed at you two, which had turned Luka into a tomato and you hide shy behind your hands.

That’s when you asked again Marinette and Luka if they would be free next Saturday so you could all watch Hamilton. You also asked Kagami if she wanted to participate.

She said yes, even if she didn’t know what Hamilton was.

Luka, Marinette and you had agreed you needed to change that.

So the first four people’s date was set too.

Well more let’s-get-to-know-each-other-better-and-show-Kagami-the-wonderful-musical-Hamilton, but whatever.

All in all, a good day.

You were just so tired.

With a groan, you kicked off your shoes and striped the clothes away who would be uncomfortable to sleep in.

You got under your covers and closed your eyes.

Time to sleep.

That’s when your phone started to ring.

Original Final Season 7 - Episode 3: The Last of the Dragons

It’s Tuesday. You guys know what that means...

ON DRAGONSTONE

As in show canon 7x03, Jon Snow arrives on Dragonstone, finally meets with Daenerys Targaryen and immediately informs her and her allies about the Army of the Dead. Everyone is in shock, this is not where this meeting was supposed to go, they’re all a bit at a loss for what to do, the meeting is adjourned abruptly

Though it’s been brought up by both their councils (separately, in private), neither Jon nor Dany mention a marriage alliance in public to each other

When Davos questions him about it later, Jon tells him he wants to see whether Dany would be a worthy Queen first (though that’s not the entire truth), and Dany is too overwhelmed by Jon’s news of the Night King to make such a proposal just yet (and too attracted to Jon to make a well informed decision about something as serious as marriage, but she only tells this to Missandei ;)

Jon and Theon privately discuss Sansa, Jon tells Theon, “What you did for her is the only reason I’m not killing you”, Theon apologizes to Jon for betraying House Stark and tells him that he always wanted to be a Stark, always thought he had to choose between the two, this impossible choice - Greyjoy or Stark - but Sansa made him realize he never had to choose, he could be both

The conversation leaves Jon dazed and we know he’s taking Theon’s words and thinking about how he’s both Stark and Targaryen

Baelish immediately gets to work on Dragonstone, reuniting with Varys and Tyrion, trying to get as much info out of everyone as possible, he knows Jon and Howland talked privately at Greywater Watch but doesn’t know what about, Davos doesn’t know either

Baelish keeps on Jon’s case about his meeting with Howland but Jon deflects, saying they just discussed “his father”, Baelish switches tactics, brings up the potential marriage alliance with Daenerys again, Jon is still sorting through his feelings about being a Targaryen period and doesn’t want to talk about it, furthering Baelish’s suspicions, their relationship is a little reminiscent of Season 1 Ned/Baelish but Jon is much more aware than Ned was and much less trusting

IN KING’S LANDING

Cersei continues to enjoy the attention from Euron, he’s not honorable like Jaime and encourages her to do her worst to those who speak against her, starts to become the devil on her shoulder

Cersei is executing “enemies” left and right, anyone who’s been found by Qyburn’s little birds speaking against her, they’re brought to court, given a “trial”, and then are given some grisly punishment (reminiscent of Joffrey - “Which do you favor, your fingers or your tongue?”)

After watching an “enemy” die in a particularly gruesome fashion, Cersei excitedly, finally, takes Euron to bed because Jaime isn’t in the mood when she wants him

IN OLDTOWN

Sam and Gilly pour heavily into the books he stole from the Restricted Section, Sam comes across a book on the Children of the Forest, their worship of the weirwoods, their culture, the symbols they’ve left behind in certain areas and what they possibly mean

IN WINTERFELL

On Jon’s instructions, Sansa attempts to organize troops/supplies to be sent to the Wall to reinforce it but Bran advises her against it, telling her he doesn’t know why, but it doesn’t feel right, he’s still having tremendous difficulty controlling his visions

Sansa and Arya discuss being “home” and how it doesn’t really feel like home even with the three Stark kids all there together again, Sansa says she hasn’t felt at home since they first left Winterfell but Arya disagrees, says there was once when she felt at home after they had left, Sansa asks her when/where, Arya explains it wasn’t a place, but a person who came to feel like family, she asks Sansa if she ever had anyone like that in her life, Sansa thinks on it and replies yes, she had a person like that - neither of them says the names

As Jon had required it of everyone 12-60 to train daily to prepare for the fight against the dead, Sansa insists she train as well, is inspired by watching Arya and Brienne fight, and Arya begins to train Sansa, her first lesson: stick ‘em with the pointy end.

Arya and Bran reminisce and grow closer, he tries to explain to her what the 3ER is, etc. She asks him if he can see anything, he tells her he can if he focuses and knows where to look and asks if she wants him to try to find anything or anyone in particular, Arya hesitates

BACK ON DRAGONSTONE

Dany is wary/cautious of Jon, discusses him with a small portion of her council - Theon, Tyrion, and Melisandre (the ones who know him best), when Theon and Tyrion leave, Melisandre mentions that both Jon and Dany are “magic” and that this is why she believes they’re both TPTWP, she tells Dany about how she brought Jon back to life, that that is what Davos meant when he said Jon “took a knife in the heart for his people”, this revelation obviously shakes Dany

Jon and Tyrion talk about the dragonglass, Tyrion mediates between him and Dany on this point, arranges another meeting between them

When Jon asks Dany about the dragonglass, she confronts him about Melisandre’s words, he reluctantly tells her it’s true that he died and came back, things are a little awkward, he asks her about when she hatched her dragons, she tells him the story, says that now they’re the last of their kind, as is she, “the last of the dragons” which, like his conversation with Theon, leaves Jon reeling as he’s continually confronted with the fact that he’s half-Targaryen

Varys and Melisandre watch Jon and Dany interact from a clifftop, they discuss how she “brought ice and fire together”, it’s “the Lord’s will,” Varys calls into question her “magic” and sacrifices, brings up the sorcerer who cut him, Mel echoes Kinvara’s words “If you are [Daenerys’] true servant, you have nothing to fear from me” which freaks Varys out

The title is in reference to Dany’s line to Jon about she and Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon being “The last of the dragons,” unknowingly also speaking it to the only other remaining “dragon” as Jon is a Targaryen and when she says this to him, Jon knows he is also a “last dragon.” (Also, this is my cheeky self stealing from Season 8′s “The Last of the Starks” because fuck you D&D. I mean, they stole it from themselves first anyway because S7 Dany says, “I am the last Targaryen, Jon Snow,” - the last Targaryen, the last of the Targaryens, the last of the Starks, the last of the dragons - meh, same thing, so really, I’m just stealing it back).

Episode 3 Inside the Episode: The Last of the Dragons

1) Sam and Gilly finding things in relation to the COTF:

This one is pretty obvious. We’ve been hearing about the COTF for seasons, Sam informing Stannis back in S5 that they used to hunt with dragonglass, etc. Even though they’re apparently all dead now, we still need to know more about their connection to the Army of the Dead.

And seriously, what the fuck else were Gilly and Sam supposed to find in those damn books Sam stole from the Restricted Section? This was made out to be such a big deal but even the “important” piece of information from show canon Season 7 - Jon’s parentage - wasn’t from the Restricted Section books, it was from the books Sam was tasked with transcribing as punishment for curing Jorah!

So having Sam and Gilly actually find some useful information from those books just makes sense and is a payoff for so many scenes and a plot that was NEVER paid off in canon.

2) Melisandre’s convo with Dany about Jon being “magic”:

This was DEFINITELY hinted at in the S7 outline leaks! Dany and Jon’s “cliff” conversation in 7x05 originally was supposed to be them talking about how they’re both “magic”, Dany already knowing about Jon’s death. This was also the scene where he calls her “Dany” for the first time. In the context of show canon and the Aired Episode, this dialogue would have been clunky and awkward, but framed the way I’ve outlined above, would actually make it make sense.

3) Varys and Mel’s face off:

This has been hinted at since Season 6 with Varys’ confrontation with Kinvara. Varys is very anti-red priests and we were owed a showdown between him and them. The Red Priests and Varys should have had a much more involved conflict because of what material we got from prior seasons so Mel staying on Dragonstone to advise Daenerys (which is what she will be doing in this version of the story), finally delivers on something that has been set up for a while.

4) Mel staying to advise Dany?

Yes, Mel is staying to advise Dany. Honestly, Mel’s story in show canon Seasons 7 and 8 is the biggest hint of a retcon because they kind of just threw her around and inserted her in places as if to let the audience know that they hadn’t forgotten about her, but she didn’t really have anything to do.

Many of Mel’s lines from show canon also hint at a previous plot because so much of what she says and does just doesn’t make sense and is never paid off. “I’ve brought Ice and Fire together.” That was pointless. “Where will you go?” “Volantis.” That was pointless. “I have to die in this strange country.” That was pointless.

All of these seem like really significant lines but nothing ever came of them. Like, what was the purpose of Mel going to Volantis? Just to hang out before the Long Night so she could come to Westeros to die after the dead were defeated?? Many of us thought she was going to come bringing the Fiery Hand with her but nope, nothing said about why she was there, we were just supposed to accept it.

My guess is that D&D just liked some of Mel’s original dialogue so much “I’ve brought Ice and Fire together,” “I have to die in this strange country, just like you,” that they kept this all in their scripts but when they decided to go with the Mad!Dany storyline instead, Mel didn’t really serve a purpose there and so D&D could never pay off these lines that they set up.

So Melisandre staying and advising Dany makes a lot of sense. She was at Jon’s side throughout Season 6, it follows that she would then want to be at Dany’s side through Season 7. So far as her relationship with Jon, well, they’re not in the North and Mel is a guest of Dany’s on Dragonstone, as is Jon, so he and Davos really can’t do much about it.

5) Arya asking Bran about...:

I know this storyline I’m setting up will seem a little odd to some people. But bear with me! In show canon, Arya didn’t have much to do (and neither did Sansa) once Jon went to Dragonstone, so that’s how the Starkbowl of Winterfell came about - it just gave those two something to do to fill screen time. Which was incredibly obvious and really idiotic and way out of character for both Sansa and Arya.

Here, in getting back home and Jon immediately leaving, this would leave Arya feeling lonely and isolated. She came home for Jon and then he just left. It would make sense that she would try to reconnect with her remaining siblings - hence her teaching Sansa to fight and trying to understand Bran’s 3ERness.

In being away for so long, Arya really would have come to appreciate the meaning of family, and when she gets to Winterfell, she realizes there are people missing. It’s not enough. She wants more of that human connection back, that feeling of family. So she’s going to go looking for it, with Bran’s help.

More Tokusatsu AU craziness, here’s Violent Athena! This would be towards the climatic finale of the series...

Saori Kido, heir to the financial empire known as the Graude Foundation, was adopted by Mitsumasa Kido as an infant after the wounded Aries Mu and the dying Sagittarius Aiolos teleported to his mansion’s doorstep with her in tow. While Aiolos could not be saved, Mu told Mitsumasa that the baby was the reincarnation of Athena and needed to be protected at all costs. He also told Mitsumasa that the reason they teleported to his estate was that the baby’s mother told Mu that if something were to happen to her, the Kido family would where to go.

Meanwhile in Sanctuary’s headquarters in the outskirts of Athens, the newly crowned Pope Arles cursed his weakness and entered deep thought. The baby Athena was not like previous incarnations of their treasured goddess. Born to the Angel Bilquis and the Gold Saint Aries Mu after a tryst that formed following the two Pantheons joining forces to seal away the treacherous “Lord of Hell” Lucifer, this new baby had the potential to totally unravel whatever hold Sanctuary had over the remaining Pantheons. When Arles, back then known as the leader of the Gold Saints “Gemini Saga, attempted to tell Pope Shion, he discovered Shion using forbidden arts in an attempt to create artificial Spectres. The constant stream of blasphemy caused Saga to lose control of his better half, and in a rage Saga slew Shion and took his place in an attempt to “right the wrongs.”

As his rage abated, Saga realized in horror what he had done and quickly set out to discover what Shion had been up to. As it turned out, Shion was attempting to reverse engineer the “Specterism” plague that befell Sanctuary during the previous Holy War of the 18th Century. Saga had walked into the final testing stages that would turn a possessed human back into their former self. Shion had left enough of his notes for Saga to complete the cure, and quickly put the experiment to rest. Saga decided that he would honor his former Pope by finishing what he started and reclaim Sanctuary’s glory.

After allowing the child prodigy Hornet Milo to kill Bilquis, whom Arles poisoned with dark energy so that she appeared to have gone mad, he attempted to poison the baby Athena, as well. The goal was simply to present the possessed Athena to his former comrades and cure her in order to boost his cult of personality among the other Pantheons. Aiolos walked in by happenstance, and in the struggle he learned Arles’ true identity. Saga quickly overpowered his former comrade and ordered his death when Aiolos snatched Athena from her crib and brought her to Mu.

Finding Athena was easy enough for Arles, who could sense her Holy Cosmo all across the planet, but it was pointless to go after her now. The window had passed, and he needed to ensure that Sanctuary would not suspect him for foul play. As he gathered his allies and removed those who may one day rise against him, an even grander scheme formed in his mind. Perhaps Athena being born of an Angel and a Gold Saint was not a blasphemy, but a blessing in disguise. When she reached maturity and awakened to her true self, Athena would possess the most powerful vessel ever. It might even one day surpass the height of Athena’s divine flesh prior to the end of the Age of Myth.

If this vessel could be that powerful...perhaps it would be possible for it to become a vessel for another entity.

19 years later, Saori Kido awakened and her godly Cosmo was felt all across the world. It would signal a months long campaign for Sanctuary to reclaim the “ripened” Athena from the traitors who whisked her away. Mu, who had adopted the identity of billionaire weapons developer and head of Graude Foundation’s R&D Division “Mutsuki Zeto,” had prepared two teams to meet Arles’ assault: the noble “Zodiac Knights” led by Pegasus Seiya who fought to protect all innocent life from Sanctuary’s tyranny, and the unrelenting “Zodiac Horde” led by Unicorn Jabu whose sole purpose was to protect Saori and inflict harm upon anyone who put her at risk.

During the conflict, Arles discovered that the Knights’ Andromeda Shun was the vessel for Hades. Under the advice of his twin brother Kanon, who was now acting as his kagemusha for the Gemini Cloth, Arles waited for Pisces Aphrodite to repot the successful assassination of longtime Sanctuary target Pandora Heinstein, and sent him to Japan for his next mission. As Aphrodite headed to Japan, Kanon sent a message to Siren Sorrento under the “Sea Dragon” codename that the time had come to awakening their secret God Poseidon.

On the surface, it appeared that Saori’s protector and old childhood sweetheart Julian Solo and her trusted Saint Andromeda Shun were going to be pitted against one another with the hopes that one angry God killed the other. Shun had been forcibly awakened as Hades with a dart laced with Pandora’s blood, and Julian through the vase containing Poseidon’s seal soul being undone by Sorrento. Because neither possession was natural, the hold of them was not absolute, and the Zodiac Knights were able to restore their teammate by sealing Hades’ soul within the now-empty vase. Sorrento volunteered to ensure the vase would not fall into the wrong hands, but two days later Julian discovered his body with no vase in sight.

In reality, Sanctuary had planned this chain of events from the beginning. Kanon had acquired the Sea Dragon moniker from Sorrento’s late father, whom he had killed to cover his tracks that his “youthful romantic indiscretions” with the fiance of the Solo Shipping Conglamerate’s heir resulted in the birth of Poseidon’s next vessel. He was imprisoned by his brother when Shion got word of this, but now it was an avenue of Arles’ greatest triumph. Because he was fathered by a Gemini Saint, it meant that his possession would be a split dichotomy instead of a gradual transformation like Saori into Athena. This gave the Knights a chance to reason with Julian and work together to stop Hades.

Now Hades’ soul was sealed entirely within the vase, and Arles quickly went to work on the next phase of the plan as Aphrodite returned to Sanctuary with the vase in tow. Arles withdrew his troops from Japan and accepted Saori’s proposition for a final showdown. Three weeks later, Saori and the Zodiac Knights arrived at the Aries Temple, where they were immediately ambushed by 500 of Sanctuary’s best soldiers. In the conflict, Saori was wounded by an arrow, and Arles telepathically challenged the Zodiac Knights to conquer the 12 Houses if they wished to save her.

As the Knights marched up the temple, the Gold Saints still loyal to Athena hurried to the Aries Temple in an attempt to stop the venom that had entered his bloodstream. As the final temple was cleared, Libra Dohko had successfully nullified the arrow’s venom, but in doing so sealed the fate of himself, Scorpio Milo, and Taurus Aldebaran. The venom was only a decoy, a medicine that kept Saori’s soul pure from the true purpose of the arrow. The reality was that the arrow contained the entirety of Hades’ soul, warped by Arles’ Judeccan Sorcery to be more susceptible to consumption by Saori.

The dark wave of violent intent was felt all the way in the Pope’s Sanctum, where Aries Mu and his protege Knights were on the cusp of victory against the fearsome duo of the Gemini Twins. Realizing that he would likely never have a chance to admit to Saori that he was so much more to her than just her mentor, Mu used his Starlight Extinction to teleport the Knights as far down the Temple stairs as he could muster. As for himself, Mu opened a portal to the crawlspace between realities known as “the Void,” and let nothingness swallow himself and the Gemini Twins before they could stop the Knights.

Back at the foot of the Aries Temple, the Zodiac Horde finally arrived to provide reinforcements, but realized it might already be too late. Instead of Athena taming Hades’ soul with her purity as Saga had hoped, instead the two souls fused together into something new and twisted. Dohko, Milo, and Aldebaran had been reduced to bloody slush, and in place of the Nike Staff was the Sword of Kers. Once hailed as a Goddess of Righteous War, Saori Kido had instead turned into an entity of Ultimate Punishment, triggered by even the slightest scent of moral decay.

As the smell of humanity’s sin entered her nostrils, Saori Kido reached for her blade and prepared to begin her judgment of her charges. Athena had been reborn, and nothing would ever be the same again...

PSOH: Possible Cause for Leon’s Immortality Revealed?!

!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

I just came across one of Akino-sensei’s more recent works: Hua Tuo Fenglaizhuan (华佗风来传). It consists of 8 chapters in 2 volumes. I found the first volume (Mandarin edition) here and read the second volume at a library.

This series is set in the Three Kingdoms period (i.e. about 2000 years ago in Ancient China). Basically, it is about a fantasy version of the historical doctor, Hua Tuo. In this story, he was depicted as traveling around different cities and performing miraculous cures for free.

Later, it was revealed that Hua Tuo was a deity who was sent down to the earthly realm as a punishment for falling asleep whilst he was on duty guarding a magical tree in the heavenly realm, which produces immortality-granting fruits. This resulted in one of these fruits being stolen. In the final chapter of this series, Hua Tuo found a magical tree in the earthly realm which was apparently barren and guarded by a demon.

Revelation #01: this magical tree was grown from the stolen immortality-granting fruit.

Revelation #02: this fruit was stolen by a deity, Ye Cha, who had fallen in love with and married a mortal woman. He did this so that his ailing wife would not only recover from her illness, but would also be able to remain young and live with him forever. BUT Ye Cha’s wife refused to eat the fruit. She asked him to bury the fruit instead so that a tree producing similar fruits could be grown. This would benefit more people in the longer-term. Upon his wife’s death, Ye Cha buried said fruit with her body.

Revelation #03: The tree was not necessarily barren. It’s just that it would probably take a really long time for it to bear fruits because of the crappy, non-magical conditions for its growth in the earthly realm.

Revelation #04: Due to the tree not bearing fruit for a long time, the deity eventually turned into a demon so that he could guard the tree until it bears fruits (not really explained why he had to turn into a demon but...).

Ye Cha died of battle injuries after relating what he did. Since he now knows the identity of the thief who stole the fruit, Hua Tuo thinks that his punishment is over and that he can return to the heavenly realm. BUT one of his two companions (who were also deities sent down to supervise him) said that for Hua Tuo to complete his mission, he had to cut down the magical tree altogether to prevent an object from the heavenly realm from remaining in the earthly realm. Hua Tuo said that he couldn’t do it because he can’t destroy something which Ye Cha had given his life for and which represents the hope of humanity in general.

Hua Tuo’s companions declared that if he doesn’t cut down the tree, he would essentially be defying heaven’s will. Hua Tuo moved to protect the tree. The companions prepared to attack him. But before a showdown could take place, Hua Tuo’s boss appeared. The boss decided to punish Hua Tuo by kicking him out of the heavenly realm forever and ordering him to verify if the magical tree could bear fruit in the earthly realm.

What’s the link between this series and PSOH then?

The magical tree was estimated to probably only be able to bear fruit in the weirdly specific year 1998. You know what else happened in 1998? That’s right, the end of PSOH. Also, from the end of Shin PSOH [summary], it seems that Leon has stopped aging/ is apparently immortal. Don’t forget that, assuming the events of PSOH and Shin PSOH roughly reflect the period in which they were published, the end of PSOH and the end of Shin PSOH occurred almost 15 years apart. This means that even though Leon should be in his 40s by the time he turned up in Shin PSOH, he looked exactly the same as when we saw him in his mid-20s during the PSOH storyline (minus a ponytail).

So maybe this was what went down with Leon during this intervening period. Post-PSOH, in the Venice and Berlin side stories, Leon turns up, almost immediately accidentally alerts Count D to his presence and causes D to run off. In these side stories, Leon appeared about as impulsive and hot-headed as in PSOH.

At some point, Leon decided that he had to try something different to actually be able to meet D again. Maybe he went off to China to find something, anything, that would help him in his quest (since the Ds came from China, Leon figured that it was the most likely place for him to seek magical aid in finding D).

Whilst in China, Leon might have come across Hua Tuo and the magical tree which he was tasked to guard. Based on the various chapters in the abovementioned series, Hua Tuo is a big softie for stories involving love/ sacrifice/ suffering and basically beats himself up whenever he sees people whom he can’t help. So maybe after hearing/ upon knowing Leon’s story, Hua Tuo decided to give him one of the tree’s immortality-granting fruits to help him in his quest.

This would explain why Leon appeared ageless at the end of Shin PSOH. This might also explain why (1) this Leon is Extra Chill about D disappearing (yet again) and (2) since Leon had written to Taizuu about D at the start of PSOH, had apparently waited for 8 years to turn up at the Tokyo petshop (assuming that the period in which Shin PSOH was published reflects the storyline of its events). Since Leon is now an immortal, he has all the time in the world to find D.

5 Pencil and Paper Games (That Aren’t Tic-Tac-Toe)

In a time before people could cure their boredom by looking down at their phone and immediately retreating into an individual silo of entertainment, slaying its specter was often a cooperative exercise, requiring nothing more than a pencil and paper. Even though pen and paper games have been supplanted by phone toggling when it comes to passing the time, it’s still handy to keep a few of them in the back pocket of your brain. These “analog” games come in handy for times when your phone’s out of charge, or when you want to entertain a kid without resorting to handing them a device. Their discreet-ness also makes them useful for work or church meetings where you’re bored out of your skull, but not supposed to be on your phone. Pencil and paper games are an all-around great source of impromptu entertainment, as you’ll almost always have all the supplies needed for their play on hand. When it comes to such games, you surely already know tic-tac-toe (which once you learn how to win, becomes super boring). So here are 5 more pencil and paper games that will help you, and a compatriot, while away the time. Hangman This classic boredom killer is an oldie but a goodie. Hangman can be played with two or more players. Start off by drawing a basic looking gallows. This is where you’ll keep track of incorrect guesses in this game. One person thinks of a word (without telling the other players) and marks out the number of letters in dashes on the paper. The other players take turns guessing letters one at a time. Whenever a player guesses a letter in the word correctly, you write that letter above the corresponding dash. If they guess incorrectly, draw a body part of the hangman on the gallows. Typical order is head, body, right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, noose. So basically, players have seven chances to guess the correct letters. If a complete hangman is made before the correct word is guessed, the game ends. You can increase the number of chances players get to guess by increasing the number of body parts that are added before the hapless stick victim gets the noose — left eye, right eye, nose, mouth, ears, etc. Just make sure everyone is on the same page as to what constitutes a complete hangman before you start. A player wins the game when they guess the correct word. They can guess the entire word at any point in the game. A wrong word guess also results in a body part added to the hangman. You can write incorrect letter guesses next to the gallows so players can see which letters they’ve already guessed. To make the game harder, don’t list missed letter guesses, and count duplicate wrong guesses against them. Battleship The classic board game (turned terrible movie) actually got its start as a pencil and paper game. The old-school version has the advantage of not needing those annoying little pegs or a manufactured game board, making starting a spontaneous showdown, or playing in the car on a long road trip, much easier. This is a two-player game. Each player creates two 10×10 grids on their piece of paper. Label one grid “My Ships” and the other grid “Enemy Ships.” Label each square on the x-axis 1-10, and each square on the y-axis A-G. Make sure neither player can see the other’s grids. On the “My Ships” grid, each player outlines the five ships that represents their fleet. A fleet consists of the following: * 1 Aircraft Carrier = 5 squares * 1 Battleship = 4 squares * 1 Cruiser = 3 squares * 1 Submarine = 3 squares * 2 Destroyers = 2 squares each Each ship occupies adjacent squares on the grid, horizontally or vertically. No diagonal ships. Here’s an example of a fleet layout you might have: Once each player has drawn out their fleet, the play begins. Players take turns taking shots at their opponent by calling out coordinates of a square. For example, B-10, G-5, D-3. His opponent responds with “Hit!” if a coordinate hits his ship or “Miss!” if it misses. Each player should record their opponent’s shots on the grid labeled “My Ships” and their own shots on the grid labeled “Enemy Ships.” Use “X” to mark misses, and “O” to mark hits. If an opponent hits all the squares in a ship, you must call out the name of the ship (e.g., “You sunk my battleship!”) First player to lose all his ships loses the game. Squares This was a game my brother and I played quite a bit on the back of the paper program at church services. Draw a grid of dots – it can be as large or as small as you want. The larger the grid, the longer the game lasts. 10×10 is good-sized “field of play.” Each player takes a turn drawing a line between two dots. You can connect dots horizontally or vertically. The goal is to create a box. If a player completes the fourth side of a box, he writes his initial in the box. When a player completes a box, he gets another immediate turn to connect the dots. The game is over when the grid has been completely filled with boxes. The player with the most boxes wins. Obstruction This is a two-player game created by Romanian mathematician László Kozma. One player is “O”; the other player is “X.” Create a grid of squares at least 6×6. The larger the grid, the longer the game will go. Each player takes turns writing their mark in one of the squares on the grid. But here’s the catch: You can only mark a square if all of its neighbors (including the diagonal neighbors) are empty. The first player unable to move loses. Here’s an example of a game so you can see play in action: Sprouts Sprouts is another pencil and paper game invented by a math whiz. Actually two: John Horton Conway and Michael Paterson. This is a two-player game. Start off by drawing two or more spots on a sheet of paper. Players take turns according to the following rules: * Draw a line connecting two spots, or loop a line to and from a single spot. The line may be straight or curved, but must not touch or cross itself or any other line. * Add a new spot somewhere along that new line. * No spot may have more than three lines attached to it. The player who makes the last move wins the game, or you could play so that the player who makes the last play loses. Overall: A fun little conference that was completely free from bloated PR talks and only focused on games (except for the brief segment from Acer). Both of the hosts were great and took any slip ups in stride. Only complaint really is how long it was. And since it's the PC Gaming show, there aren't any massive title reveals, but that's to be expected.

Favorite Moments

Good to hear more about The Sinking City. I really want a new Lovecraftian game.

Man Eater; You play as a shark who eats people and its an open world RPG. It's crazy enough that it might work.

Genesis Alpha One sounds really awesome. Definitely on my radar.

Two Point Hospital looks like a fun twist on the building/management genre. Plus, the host perfectly handled the mic not working situation.

Rapture Rejects; I'm a sucker for Cyanide and Happiness. The really funny trailer grabbed me.

shilo is rapunzel bc DUH

her biological mom is marni who is queen of the land but died in childbirth upon which the guilt-stricken king (nate) fled with baby shilo, leaving mag, marni’s sister, as the queen

nate as the overprotective mother gothel bc duh

bc of the magic “cure” that was given to marni as she was dying, shilo’s hair glows blue with magic when she sings the healing song and it has healing, sedative properties

graverobber is flynn bc D U H

it’s his job

to steal and rob

GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVES

(i will never let that go i love it too much)

anyway he steals supplies of zydrate and distributes them for money, making him on the run all the time from police

he stumbles across shilo’s tower one day and seeks refuge there only to be met by a very confused shilo

head-smashing-with-frying-pan and ineffective-smoulder-time optional

anyways she takes his zydrate equipment hostage and agrees to give it back if he helps her get out of the tower and go see the opera (or whatever the equivalent of the floating lights are, your call)

“i get back my equipment and go back to my life as a grave-robber, you get back a father-daughter relationship based on mutual trust, and voilà, we part ways as unlikely friends.”

(mutual trust lmao right ok)

wacky shenanigans ensue in which darling shilo charms everyone she meets including graves

there are rumors in the kingdom that the king isn’t dead, but rather ran away with the baby princess never to be seen again, but it’s mostly dismissed as a rumor bc pshhh how could that ever happen

in the midst of all this graves eventually discovers that shilo’s hair is literally zydrate and could be used as an infinite zydrate supply as long as she’s kept alive and her hair intact

but that would involve shilo being exploited for her hair and being miserable for the rest of her life as an unwilling zydrate dealer (and being kept in yet another cage)

graves knows that the largo family, a rich and evil aristocrat family, would do anything to get their hands on shilo and her powers, and he’s right

bc rotti largo already knows about the king aka nate’s terrible secret and is pulling on his emotional strings which in turn made nate even more abusive and protective towards his daughter

graves doesn’t want that future for shilo bc sympathy! compassion! love!!

but no time for that, it’s time for a romantic opera date (or whatever the floating lights are, like i said, it’s your call)

nate finds shilo with graves at the end of it and there is a fucking showdown where shilo is captured by her father and graves is dragged to prison by the royal guards who were bribed by rotti

but of course graves escapes from prison with the help of amber sweet (who relied on him a lot for zydrate in the past)

GRAVEROBBER TO THE RESCUE

meanwhile shilo is putting two and two together and accusing her father of being the runaway king, which nate admits

he also admits that he’s been poisoning her so that she always feels too weak to go outside and that he only wanted to keep her safe (which is, as we all know, a terrible excuse)

he tells her the story of how marni died and how it was all his fault, and how they could never return to the kingdom again

until graves busts through the door like a badass

there’s an epic fight during which shilo cuts off her own hair as an act of self-liberation and graves is stabbed

rotti largo appears, having heard that graves escaped, and reveals that he poisoned marni on her deathbed bc of the love triangle that existed btwn him, marni, and nate. he is killed by graves but not before he shoots nathan dead

graverobber is seriously injured and shilo is in despair

cue that one scene in tangled where the magic works for one last time through shilo’s magic zydrate tears

~*~*true love is restored*~*~

the rest is pretty standard disney fare where shilo goes back to the castle, is reunited with mag and takes her rightful place as the princess of...

wait idek what this kingdom is gonna be called

i’m gonna call it Coroner to fit the theme

Who is She-Hulk? A Guide to Marvel's Next TV Star

Avengers: Endgame gave us a Hulk in the laboratory. Now Disney+ will be giving us a She-Hulk in the courtroom.

One of the better parts of Avengers: Endgame was the fact that Professor Hulk was a viable character, able to exist in normal scenes without sticking out like a sore thumb. Once they had that tech figured out, it was only a matter of time before She-Hulk became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And now, here we are, with the announcement of She-Hulk getting her own Disney+ show!

She-Hulk is high on the list of “top Marvel characters to not yet show up in the MCU,” especially now that both the X-Men and Fantastic Four are inevitable arrivals. Since her introduction in 1980, she’s been a major fixture in Marvel and a fresh enough take on an existing property that she rarely feels redundant when standing next to her brutish cousin.

So who is She-Hulk? Let’s take a look ...

THE ORIGINAL SERIES

The funny thing about She-Hulk’s creation was that she was made for the sake of legal strategy. The Lou Ferrigno Incredible Hulk TV show was a massive hit and Marvel came to a dire realization. Since it was an easy trope to give a popular male character a female counterpart (ie. the Bionic Woman), there was strong potential that the TV show would introduce a female version of the Hulk. But if that happened then the character would belong to the TV show! It’s like why Skeeter from Muppet Babies never shows up in actual Muppets stuff.

So Stan Lee went, “John Buscema! Get over here! We’re making a She-Hulk comic!” Then he let David Anthony Kraft and Mike Vosburg take care of the rest of the 25-issue run.

Funny enough, with Savage She-Hulk #1 existing to counter the TV show, the very first narration box even calls attention to the show via making a joke about whether Banner’s first name is David or Bruce.

Jennifer Walters starts out as a mild-mannered lawyer until the day her cousin Bruce Banner shows up because he needs someone to confide in about his whole Hulk situation. They’re hanging out for a good 10 minutes before a criminal involved in one of Jen’s cases shows up and shoots her. In order to save Jen, Bruce MacGyvers together a blood transfusion and then splits. Jen soon discovers that she can transform into a giant, jacked, green woman, and so we have She-Hulk.

It’s your usual Bronze Age fare after that. She does double-life hero stuff because She-Hulk gets blamed for tragedies. The supporting cast is boring. The villains are forgettable (outside of a half-man/half-elephant).

Somewhere, it’s established that Hulk isn’t a rage monster simply because of the gamma radiation, but because Banner spent so much of his life holding down his anger. She-Hulk plays on that by showing that instead of being driven by fury, her second form is based on Jen’s lack of confidence. She-Hulk is strong in all the ways Jen Walters could never bring herself to be.

THE FANTASTIC HULK

With her series done, She-Hulk went on to become a member of the Avengers. She remained a regular part of the team up until Brian Michael Bendis’ mid-00s reinvention of the team. What’s interesting is that she was actually part of two major teams at the same time for a period.
