Jakob and Balthasar are OCs of mine featured in To Have a Voice, which is set in my original setting of Vibrahnem. It is the first installment of what I hope will be a series that I'm calling Cursebreaker. So here's a bit more about the boys (under the cut).

(Remember these portraits? I actually posted them a few months ago when I first came up with the character concepts for Jakob [left] and Balthasar [right].)

First, the important stuff 😏 Jakob is allergic to most furred animals and suffers from moderate-to-severe hayfever, depending on time of year. Balthasar can be somewhat sensitive to strong scents and spices, which gets worse if he has a cold. Both are somewhat affected by dust, though it's not a strong trigger for either of them... Unless they are already feeling sensitive, in which case all bets are off, especially in Jakob's case (he's generally a sensitive boi).

Jakob is of average height at 5'9" (176cm) and quite slim (one of those "can't gain weight even if he tries" types), while Balthasar is a much more imposing 6'4" (194cm) and built like a goddamn Olympian. However, he does not like attention or standing out, so he tends to slouch and wears loose clothing, often with a head covering. Basically, Jakob is a friendly, nerdy twink and Balthasar is his shredded, gentle giant boyfriend (who can turn not-so-gentle in a split second if need be).

Physically, they're both in their mid-twenties. Jakob is about 26, and Balthasar appears of similar age, but (spoilers for THaV ahead) Balthasar is actually about a thousand years old, and spent most of that time cursed in the form of an immortal cat. He's originally from a nation called Tulyran, which once existed on another continent that lies across the sea, but that civilization fell hundreds of years prior to the events of the story. He has spent his time wandering the world and eventually ended up in Merseheim, where he fatefully crossed paths with a certain Archivist.

Jakob works in the Archives of the Order, a sort of religious organization that follows a goddess of protection called the Great Sister. The Inquisition is a branch of the Order, and the Knights of the Midnight Falcon in the neighboring country of Schorseau (whose members include Quinns and Ollie from Accidental Mistress) are an offshoot as well. Many people who live at the Order's headquarters in Onteburgh (Merseheim's capital) were raised there as orphans, but Jakob joined voluntarily due to his interest in history and for the chance to study in the Order's extensive Archives.

Balthasar is not very forthcoming about his past, but his physique and prowess would suggest a martial career. With his shy and reserved temperament, one can scarcely imagine him in the role of a ruthless brigand or cutthroat mercenary, but he may have once been a stoic military officer, or perhaps his physical skills were honed within the bloody halls of a gladiatorial arena...

I have been sitting on the idea of this series for months and have written a few parts. So I will posting the first part right after I post this and I am so excited for you guys to read it!

It has been a very long time since i have been this excited to write and put something out for you guys; I actually feel like my writers block is gone and my love and motivation is back!

Alone in the Dark

Feyre is in her cell UTM

Screams. She heard them a lot. Screams. Female and Male, Women and Men. She heard them during all times of the day. That's what she assumed, at least. Feyre had lost every sense of time in her cell. The only source of light was the flickering lights of the torch in the corridor that was shining through the slit of her cell door. She didn't know if it was day right now or night. She didn't know which time it was. It could have been an hour since she woke up or a day. Her only companion in this dark cell was the faint light of the torch, her thoughts and the screams that followed her. Followed her into her dreams. The dreams where it was her who laid there as Amarantha let her nails scrape over Feyres skin, the dreams where it was Clare Beddor and Feyre had no choice but to watch, helpless, as Amarantha tortured her and Rhys held her down. The dreams where the Attor punched her again and again until she lost consciousness. The dreams where she scrubbed the floors and the dirty water turned red and she looked up at Clare's corpse. The screams were always there and Feyre couldn't escape them. 

Feyre tightened her arms around herself, the cold of the cell biting into her skin. The screams followed her, yes, but she wouldn't give up. She couldn't give up. Feyre would do these trials and she'd win, for Tamlin and the spring court. For her sisters. Her sisters who were in the mortal realm. Feyre hoped that if anything went wrong and they felt the first pang of danger nearing, they would pack their bags and get on the next ship, traveling as far away as possible from the danger. But Feyre wouldn't let that happen, wouldn't let them live in danger and fear. Feyre would fight for her family, even if it meant she wouldn't see them again. She'd fight for her sisters, for the mortal realm. For Prythian. 

Feyre scrambled on her feet and walked over to the opposite stone wall, keeping far away from the corner she used to relieve herself, and touched the cold stone. It bit her skin but she didn't care at the moment, she just had to touch it. She couldn't know that the High Lord of the Night Court did the same thing in his chambers, feeling as frustrated as Feyre felt hopeless. She closed her burning eyes. She wouldn't cry. Fight. Feyre reminded herself. Fighter, you're fighter. You survived poverty, hunger and freezing forests. You're a survivor. You fight. 

She sighed and went back to her hay bed. Feyre laid down and stared into the darkness. She was right. She'd fight and no taunting High Lord, no taunting Fae, no Attor or Faerie Queen would break her.
