cattail
Typha /ˈtaɪfə/ is a genus of about 30 species of monocotyledonous flowering plants in the family Typhaceae. These plants have a variety of common names, in British English as bulrush or reedmace,[2] in American English as reed, cattail,[3] or punks, in Australia as cumbungi or bulrush, in Canada as bulrush or cattail, and in New Zealand as raupo. Other taxa of plants may be known as bulrush, including some sedges in Scirpus and related genera.
The genus is largely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, where it is found in a variety of wetland habitats.
The rhizomes are edible, though at least some species are known to accumulate toxins and so must first undergo treatment before being eaten.[4] Evidence of preserved starch grains on grinding stones suggests they were already eaten in Europe 30,000 years ago.[5]

I just learned something interesting about the common cattail (Typha latifolia):  it has two flowers.  The big brown part is the female one and the tip at the top is the male.  Got this info thanks to @wildandfree.mb on Instagram.  They also taught me that cattails filter toxins and are edible.  The more you know.

This is the 34 1/2th installment of ‘Since I’ve Been Gone’. Taken on the same day as the last post while working for @americanconservationexperience, these are among the many native plant species we were helping to preserve. These are southern cattail (Typha domingensis), among the most dominant plants in this wetland. These plants are important for the wetland itself since they are efficient filters against animal waste leaching. The ribosome is edible when grinded and have been used as a food source for centuries #plants #plants #sedge #sedges #texasplants #texasplant #wetlandplants #texasnativeplants #texasnature #bulrush #bulrushes #cumbungi #cattail #cattails #edibleplants #reedmace #punks #nature #flora #plantae #angiosperms #vascularplant #tracheophyta #monocot #liliopsida #poales #typhaceae #typha #typhadomingensis #aceinspires (at Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVGYumdriiw/?utm_medium=tumblr

Meg Viney - fibre artist, Vessels for a Shaman. The ‘Vessels for a Shaman’ series is really about spiritual containment. Human nature seems to have an innate need for a ‘spiritual connectedness’ as it were. Different cultures, different societies form their beliefs according to custom and or history, but each has a spiritual dimension that guides and comforts – that contains. This series of vessels refer to Shamans, who have the power to communicate with and to influence the forces that control people’s lives. Thus they are the spiritual containers.

Cattails
Typha
Aka. Bulrush, reedmace, punks, sausage tails, cumbungi, raupo, cat -o- nine tails, gama,
This genus is native to the northern hemisphere.
The common cattails roots were used to treat wounds, sores, boils, carbuncle, inflammation, burns, and scalds. Female fuzz was applied to scalds, burns, and to prevent chafing. Young flower heads treated diarrhea. Roots infused in milk was used to treat dysentery and diarrhea. Root tea made of narrow leafed cattails was used to treat kidney stones.
Typha are edible. The insides of shoots, pre flower, can be eaten raw or cooked. The rhizome is sometimes processed into flour. Newly sprouted shoots are eaten raw. There's a carbohydrate lump that can be peeled and eaten like a potato. Leaf bases can be eaten raw as well, so can the still green flower spike. Pollen can be collected and used as flour or thickener.
Seeds are fed to cattle in some countries. The plant is also used as building material, especially around lake Titicaca. It can be used as insulation, made into paper, tinder and textiles.
