rewatching calamity. yes again. and something i'm very compelled by is like. there are several plot threads setup in the first episode that truly do not matter at all. like- patia is informed that a slot is opening in the ring of gold, and it's implied that she could have that slot!! that's huge!! but within a few hours, that has been forgotten and thrown aside and we don't give a shit anymore.
and i just think that's brilliant setup for this campaign- we, the viewers, know that this will end terribly. we know that this is calamity. but the characters have no idea! they have their own plot threads that they're following, their own things to get excited about!! and it's so clever to establish these things, and to so simply and easily imply a richer world outside of this campaign, especially for these characters who are all such movers and shakers.

2. I don't know if your story will long be known. But it did happen.

If I had a penny every time Luis Carazo played a broken character reaching out and talking (negotiating) to a cosmic/horror/evil deity that ended up ripping open a rift between realities with its own two hands to try and come out of it on a Critical Role short season with a 6h30 long finale I'd only have 2 BUT IT'S WEIRD (EXHILARATING) THAT IT HAPPENED TWICE

My forever favourite moment in Calamity...
Brennan: Patia, incredibly, you only take 39 points of damage. I want to ask you, your arm touching the tree... Are you weakest at the elbow or the shoulder?
Aabria: NO!
Travis: *high pitch shrill of laughter*
Lou, to Brennan: You gotta cut this shit out, man.
Marisha: Uh, okay. I guess my elbow?
Brennan: Thankfully, you failed your constitution save and your arm severs at the elbow, instead of you being pinned under the tree.

I have too many Calamity thoughts I can’t organize but!! Laerryn casting blight on the tree!! Nydas, of all people, stepping in to stop her and finally accepting that the prophecy might NOT be gibberish. Loquatius not taking a second to decide, just defending Laerryn because that’s the only thing Loquatius would possibly do. Laerryn being one of the most intelligent people in the history of Exandria and still doing the Very Obviously Dumb Thing to attack the tree because that’s the only thing Laerryn would possibly do in that scenario. It’s inevitable. It’s fitting. It’s who they are. Patia touching the tree, the tree “attacking” Patia, Laerryn doubling down on her decision to destroy the tree that not only was standing in the way of her life’s work, but also was hurting her friend!!! After it had also caused Evandrin to be gone!! Zerxus DICE saying he ABSOLUTELY looks up to see Evandrin, because that’s what matters to him, instead of doing the “smart” thing. The way it was all so obviously gonna go bad. The way it couldn’t be any different, because those choices were the only path for who each of them was. The announced tragedy of it all, not because we already know the calamity will happen, but because, by that point, we knew those characters well enough to understand that it would always end up like this.

the whole. first Major conversation between zerxus and asmodeus. we all know that it's a masterclass in rp from both brennan and luis but this time i'm really focusing on how well brennan avoids lying!!
zerxus asks "are you tricking me?" and we know that the answer is yes. but asmodeus does not lie and say no. instead he says simply, "i never know how to answer that question." and zerxus moves on
the rage comes out, sometimes. and that is true. one of the first things he says to zerxus, back in the dream, is "whom did we betray?" and that is the rage. his siblings, the prime deities, they betrayed the primordials. that is what asmodeus believes. so when he yells, when he breaks, when he rages. he does not lie.
"not for all the ages of the world will i forget you" he says. and that is true. but it comes after zerxus's assumptions. assumptions that asmodeus wants to fight the prime deities, assumptions that humanity is merely caught in the crossfire. and we know from the final episode that that is not true- but asmodeus never says it. zerxus does. asmodeus does not lie about that, because he does not have to.
"you, my friend, are being used" he says. and zerxus says "by you?" and asmodeus does not answer. he says zerxus is not being lied to by any god, and that is true- asmodeus is not lying. but he is still using and manipulating zerxus. this entire conversation is asmodeus manipulating him, so that he can use him later, in the final episode.
but he does not lie.

Me, listening to Brennan Lee motherfucking Mulligan cheerfully describing the most VICIOUS killshots I’ve ever heard in DnD during ep4 of EXU: Calamity:
Also me, admiring the ease and engagement of the storytelling while The Plot Actually Happens after 3 eps of lead up:
