One of the many, many reasons I recommend NADDPod's D&D court even if you don't play D&D but do enjoy actual play is that invariably there are several cases where one player gets special treatment. Sometimes it's all encompassing and egregious (the one from this past week with the paladin with spell-proof armor who is the only person any NPCs will deal with and who gets first dibs on all items) and sometimes it's smaller and more understandable (the person who insists on taking a rest every time their imp familiar dies to resummon them), but every time we hear from the unfavored players who are like "what the fuck". It's a powerful antidote to the all-too-common "why isn't the entire campaign centered around my specific blorbo; why aren't other characters immediately struck down the second they speak anything but total unquestioning support for them?" mentality you see in actual play fandom.

This part makes me VIOLENTLY ILL. I need to know which home Jean’s talking about. At this point had Jean considered the relatively new safety and comfort of Jeremy, Cat, and Laila (maybe some other Trojans) to be home? Is he still referring to the Ravens nest, full of brutality, but people he loves, people he hates? Or is it Marseille, the birthplace of his pain and himself, bearing in mind everything he had just learned from Stuart?

It’s ambiguous for a reason, but it so important because it shows his character development. It tells us where Jean is at the moment. Is he still stuck with the Ravens, or even farther back in time— Yearning for France and his sister. Or is he living in the present, making a home where he’s finally got people to shelter him and keep him safe.

i'm 63 pages in and i am just so emotional - we are so incredibly lucky as such a large and longstanding fandom that nora has released this book as affordable and accessible as the previous three - these books have given so many people a community, a sense of belonging, and a new meaning to fighting for their lives. i will forever be so grateful for what she has given to the world, what it meant for me at sixteen, and what it means for me now
