I will discuss Jodybeth bellow but I will also mention Coronabeth's suicide threat , if this is delicate for anyone here please don't keep reading.
I can't stop thinking about Coronabeth telling us that she constantly used to threaten to end her own life . Maybe she never thought of really doing it and only did it in order to manipulate Ianthe but to even coming up with this idea in the first place ...
I know Ianthe must believe that would be impossible to anyone not to adore Coronabeth ,with or without necromancy, but does Coronabeth think the same ? Or did she grew up expecting the carpet being pulled out from bellow her feet at any point in a Ianthe's whim ? That would too explain her breakdown at Canaan's house ? Why didn't Ianthe eat her instead ? Now she was alone to would have to tell the truth in their home and face the consequences whichever they would be.
Was Coronaeth afraid Judith would think and feel less of her after she figured it out with the rest that she wasn't a necromancer ? Would her passion grow and her attachment with Judith increase when Judith still treated her the same ? Still saw her as the crown and future king of Ida while Coronabeth already knew that path was forever sealed to her ? If everyone in the Houses changed their perception of her at least Judith didn't and she needed that , that's part of why she can't left Judith to die ? I am so not normal about Coronabeth and Judith guys .

I read As Yet Unsent for the first time last night, and I'm a little bit obsessed with Judith x Coronabeth because like... there is no reason for them to be like that. Gideon and Harrow are fucked up best frenemies because they were the only two children locked together inside a death cult, but Jody and Corona? They actively chose to be like that. They came from different planets and yet chose to see each other regularly so that they could argue and then not speak to each other, and that is beautifully insane.

Ianthe, Coronabeth and the Blood of Eden
Characters
<< Previous: Harrow | Masterpost
-
I gotta be perfectly honest here, I'm not overly fond of Ianthe. I can see why people love her. I appreciate her as a character construct. I don't like her though. Her attachment to Coronabeth is her one (1) redeeming quality, in my eyes.
And Coronabeth is now with the Blood of Eden.
Again I find myself really wanting to be a fly on the wall in that crucial little time at Canaan House between Cytherea's death, Blood of Eden arriving and taking all survivors sans Lyctors, and the Emperor arriving to collect Ianthe and Harrow.
Ianthe and Coronabeth have been plotting with each other their whole damn lives. There's no way they didn't have some kind of agreement with each other before splitting up. Something perhaps communicated in code, so neither Harrow nor BoE would have known what they were talking about. Perhaps they both decided then and there to join Blood of Eden, and that Ianthe would be a spy for Corona. Perhaps they've both been with them, or at least sympathetic, since before Canaan House. No idea if/how they would have kept up communication while Ianthe was at the Mithraeum, but maybe she was meeting Corona in secret while out killing planets? We know that after a while the old Lyctors didn't supervise their charges all the time when out killing planets, and there were lots of planets to kill.
Alternatively, could Ianthe have somehow managed to form some kind of BrainRiver Necromantic connection? That would be deep spirit magic almost akin to Lyctorhood - perhaps she did take a tiny bit of Corona without killing her, and then took Naberius instead - maybe she wanted to take Corona, but realised this would have killed her beloved sister, and killed Naberius instead? Maybe she figured out the secret to perfect Lyctorhood, and it is only taking a minuscule amount of your Cav - letting her take a minuscule amount of you - and as such, you can communicate with each other even when apart?
Would be a banger if so. Mad props to Ianthe if this is true. Might even be her 2nd redeeming feature.
Actually, no, it's still just the love for Coronabeth. If Ianthe had cared about Corona a little bit less, she could have taken and killed her. But she wouldn't.
So anyway I'm deeply sure that Corona and Ianthe are either already communicating, or both working very hard to get back together again.
Are they with the Blood of Eden, though?
Coronabeth, at this point, seems to have been taken in by them, according to Judith's journal; she could be a double agent type, or just doing whatever will keep her alive with the best chances of seeing Ianthe again. She also gets to keep Judith and Camilla alive. Coronabeth actually cares about people other than Ianthe, or at least it seems that way.
The epilogue suggests that either the three of them escaped from BoE alongside this random girl, or found her after escaping. Either that - or they're in BoE's network and maybe even under their protection while the three of them are off on a little side quest involving this girl. Either way, they're a united front of sorts, working towards the same goal (looking after this random kid, and finding out what her significane is, probably).
One who looks after her, one who teaches her, one who goes to work for her.
Camilla is revealed as the one to look after her. Teacher must be Judith, and Coronabeth got herself some kind of job to sustain them. Is it enough? One income for four adults? What kinda economy is this please? I guess she's a princess so she's probably demanding damn good pay, but still.
(Wait, is there money? I don't remember ever seeing any references to it - which would have caught my attention...)
Just checked -
(The nice thing about having the pdfs is that I can ctrl+f this stuff)
"Pay" is only really used metaphorically,
"Money" is Gideon hoping to be given some, Harrow imagining some in the Cohort being paid for someone's rank, and the idiom "[giving x] a run for its money" a couple times. No direct references to money as far as I can tell - there doesn't seem to be any needed in the Ninth, Canaan House, or the Mithraeum. The concept of money seems to be around. Maybe it's something only non-necromancers have to worry about?
"Loan" is mentioned only once, as something Harrow could have gotten to keep her house alive, so money in some form is around, or debt at least, but there's very little idea of what form it takes.
Sorry, let's get back on track. We were talking about the Tridentarii and Blood of Eden. And actually, I think I've said about what I can on them. I wanna move on!
>> Next: Camilla and Palamedes

Halloween party x locked tomb
Gideon: throws the party, requests everyone to come in costume
Palamedes: wears a sexy nurse costume no questions asked
Camilla: wears some cat ears because Palamedes asked nicely
Harrow: refuses to dress up but everyone thinks the skull paint and bones are a costume anyway. She hates it
Jeannemary and Isaac: dress up as Camilla and Palamedes
Silas and what's his face: they don't come
Corona: Disney princess. Classic but ianthe calls her basic
Ianthe: does the hardcore costume, wig, makeup, accessories, it still looks kindof gross and Gideon tells her so immediately
Abigail and Magnus: Elizabeth and Mr darcy. No one knows who they are but they don't mind
Judith: goes bc Corona asks her to but she sits in the corner the whole time
Teacher: says dont spike the punch kids, winks, and leaves them alone

Cytherea x Gideon, G1deon x John aaaaand Judith-Varun x Coronabeth!
Tumblr media
Cytherea/Gideon: HOT. G1deon x John is probably not supposed to be canon but "tell me to stay and fight and I'll die"... 🔥
G1deon x Alecto is something I'd NEVER considered before but listen. He did swear to her to protect John. He liked her. WHY NOT
Judith/Corona is not my ship but Judith-and-Varun? YEAH
Nona/Hot Sauce is adorable

finally finished nona and i liked it, though not nearly as much as harrow, mostly cause the first half of the book was pretty boring with small fun parts but then the last 10 chapters, especially the last five or so, slapped hard
now onto some more spoilery thoughts under the cut
i hate paul like legitimately lmao they are a poor replacement for cam and pal
so if i'm getting this right alecto was something like a resurrection beast even before jod killed the universe? that's why she was so powerful? if not what the hell is she
how the hell did gideon get out for harrow and how the hell did jod get her corpse back since she was evacuated from canaan house alongside judith, corona and camilla
speaking of judith i may just be stupid but what the fuck was that thing that was speaking out of her
also who or what the fuck is aim, i know they're a message but of what/whom
ianthe and (fake?)gideon being friends was not something i ever saw coming
rip nona i still don't know how exactly you came to be but you were a fun character
i really love jod cause he's so good!! he's such a good character!!! like murdered an entire galaxy for his own gain, spent ten thousand years hunting the descendants of the people who wronged him and managed to escape, lied to his closest friends and used them like his personal play things made them commit atrocities cause he was lonely and didn't want to let them go, he's such an absolute psychopath but at the same time he's just a dude, a guy, who quotes memes and makes dad jokes and loudly chews peanuts i mean how can you not stan???
this is how ianthe x harrow can still win

Consider: Lyctoral live-action Among Us on the Sepulchre.
Everybody has to go about their normal daily tasks while the Impostor slips amongst them and assassinates them. Once they’ve been assassinated, they have to leave their bodies where they are and go sit in the River with the others and talk shit.
Group meetings are called when bodies are discovered. Ianthe inevitably goes out the airlock first. Ianthe is almost never the Impostor, much to her absolute rage. Palamedes is the king of Impostors because he is inevitably the calmest, coolest head in any given situation and his suggestions of who it might be are so very reasonable. He has won the most games without being discovered by a landslide.
@n1ghtwr1ter
I'm considering it, I'm approving it.
Even when Ianthe is the imposture and has murdered with perfect stealth she still gets voted out first and she is always livid about it. Palamedes gaslights, gatekeeps, and girlbosses his way through all debates. Gideon and Harrow will cover for each other if they discover the other's the imposter--even though that's not the game and everyone's quite cross about it. Judith will work herself up over the "though X out the airlock and if it's not them throw me out next" argument when she's very sure. She gets airlocked the 2nd most (after Ianthe). Corona never votes to put someone out the airlock unless she's sure, she won't risk it, she's also a sloppy killer. Camilla almost never goes out the airlock because she's too damn likable and doesn't make sound when she walks.

The new Locked Tomb story really makes me think that Judith missed her chance to become intensely infatuated with Camilla Hect thanks to the Sixth not really being the ball-attending type. This story shows us a Judith who falls hard for women who are intense and competent and dedicated to their role and that is Camilla to a T. If she had met her before Canaan House, oh goodness.
Another result of this story is that I am now picturing all sorts of Judith/Corona/Camilla fic I will never write but that I have titles/stupid gay summaries for, in all the permutations possible:
"Ceiling Chess" "One half plus one half is only ever half... until Camilla Hect shows them how good she is at both maths and knowing the value of quiet" "We had an argument" "Five times Judith and Coronabeth had an argument, and one time they didn't" "The time both Judith and Coronabeth discovered they had designs on Camilla after loudly stating they didn't" "Three x Two = Six"

Harrow the Ninth: The Ending
OK this one’s pretty short it’s just a breakdown of how I read the ending.
So we’ve got two bits: we’ve got three people taking care of an invulnerable amnesiac in a conflict-ridden city on a world with a carbon economy, and then we’ve got Harrow in the River.
First Bit
I think this one’s rather clear. Camilla(the one who looks after me), Corona(the one who works for me), and Judith(the one who teaches me[only one who can do necromancy]), are taking care of Harrow’s body and whatever/whichever soul(s) are currently inside it. I’m pretty sure it’s Gideon, but with amnesia from the trauma of being deep within, and somehow exiting, The River. I feel like the last bits of Chapter 52 are clear that Gideon didn’t die even if she THINKS she did, if you read between the lines. The last section starts with
“...if you die by drowning your whole life flashes before your eyes?”
and that doesn’t happen for Gideon. Instead, she sees a fading visitation by Alecto(did Alecto perhaps come back to her in those final moments and push her out of The River?), and then Camilla trying to save her life(and apparently succeeding). Also as I’ve written before(and wrote after reading Gideon the Ninth but cant seem to find X| X| X| probably did it on Twitter their search function is CRAP >:( >:() I really don’t see Muir killing Gideon off.
It could also be a merger of Gideon and Harrow’s souls, but I don’t think that’s the case. To begin with the treatment here isn’t nearly commiserate to that particular development, and I trust that if Muir went in that direction, she’d do it justice(I mean: Look at Harrow the Ninth; it’s all ABOUT doing justice to characters and premises). More practically tho Chapter 52 brings up the concept in discussing “life flashing before your eyes” and dismisses it. There IS the implication that the person can do Necromancy, which points in that direction, but the above, combined with my reading of Harrow’s situation, makes me doubt this outcome.
The last possibility is that it could be Alecto in Harrow’s body; there is that vision, and the necromancy(and given Alecto’s ease navigating The River, I’m assuming she’s Necromantic[as are all Planet-Souls hinthinthint]). I doubt this mainly cuz as above I don’t think Muir would kill off Gideon like this and if it were Alecto then where’s Gideon? I suppose it COULD be a triple-soul bodysharing and/or merging situation though.
Second Bit
Harrow chose not to go to her body because she KNEW Gideon was in her body currently and this would displace her, leading to Gideon’s consumption and making all she’s done to keep Gideon alive for naught. She chose NOT to stay in her Dream-Bubble because this is Harrow: OF COURSE she wouldn’t take security, surety, and comfort over the Hard, Chancy, Self-Risking, “Right” course. So:
Harrow destroys her Dream-Bubble(don’t try to argue with me that’s absolutely what it is >:|)
She goes into The River
Then a flash of her hallway, the same one from Ch. 33 when traveling back to her body
Then she’s back in her memory of Gideon dunking her. To be clear: this is a baptism analog.
Then she breaks the surface of the water and she’s back in Drearbruh, back at it’s heart, back in The Locked Tomb; finally “Home”
Alecto’s tomb is Bare(She is Risen!), a two-hander lies within the hollow of the bier, and so does Gideon’s fantasy of a Cohort titty-mag.
I think there are three possibilities here.
One: The Tomb represents her mind/soul and she’s in a modified version of the position Gideon was in throughout Harrow the Ninth. I don’t think this is likely because Harrow explicitly rejected returning to her body, and going into The River was presented as a separate choice from returning. HOWEVER the Hallway(returning to her body) and the dunking(Gideon was underwater, “surfacing”; now she’s pushing Harrow underwater) can be read as evidence of it. As to the Alecto set-dressing, I don’t really think these signs of escape really subtract from this idea as we know Alecto has a spiritual connection to Harrow, and they could be read as symbolizing that.
Two: Harrow has traveled through The River back to Alecto(so to Drearbruh since that’s where Alecto is), through an act of spirit-projection similar to what Alecto was doing with her throughout the book. I think this is a more plausible read given the setting and the possible explosion(the sounds of Alecto escaping), but there are a couple facts which push me in another direction; some quotes I’ll bring up later, the sword(why would Alecto leave her sword?), and Frontline Titties of the Fifth. As has been repeatedly belabored; that’s not even a real publication, Griddle!(though I will say, if she’s spirit-projecting she’s probably in some extra-liminal space btw The Shore and the world of The Living, and maybe thoughts&desires can manifest as spiritual objects within that place. Given all the similarities The River has to The Immaterium in the Warhammer universe and how that plane is directly shaped by thoughts, it’s not entirely out of the question)
The reading I hold to most strongly is this though:
“floundered not to the shore but to the island in the center...”
The Shore has been mentioned throughout HtN as a sort of transitional part of The River which the living arrive at when they either die or project to The River, and here the book is explicitly saying she’s refusing to return to The Shore. She swims across the water to a place on the other side of it; an “island in the center”. And, while the place she arrives is familiar and sentimental to her, it is also, explicitly and textually,
“faraway in a land she had never traveled”
Drearbruh is her home; she opened The Locked Tomb when she was 10; the scene Harrow is in is as familiar as it can be for her and yet the book calls it “a faraway land she [has] never traveled”. She’s home yet she’s faraway. She’s laying in a tomb of ice, glass, and iron and yet it’s warm and soft as cotton bedding to her(someone who has refused such comforts her whole life). It is COMFORTING and COZY to her! A two-hander lays within
“that final resting place of Harrowhark’s one true love”.
Which is HILARIOUS and sneaky ambiguity if you ask me. I mean: obvsl the surface read is Alecto’s “final resting place” cuz that’s literally what it is in the story, but it is the sword that is “finally resting” there now; the sword that can represent both Alecto and GIDEON(and, if we want to go even further beyond getting super-symbolic with it, the hard path of conflict, justice, and suffering Harrow has ALWAYS chosen throughout her life[1]). Anyway the more immediate point is: this is the grave/home/bed of her Love. She finds a magazine that doesn’t exist there; one made up by Gideon which warmly recalls Gideon to her mind as she drifts to her rest.
This book is HEAVY with Christian, specifically Catholic, reference and symbolism. In Christianity God is Love and God’s Home(Heaven) is a “Home of Love”. In Christianity Heaven is(among other things) a place of rest; when one goes there one’s burdens stay behind. This is the first place we’ve ever seen(aside from her “warm” attraction upon meeting BARIstar Gideon) where Harrow’s emotional and physical state is described as “warm” and “comfortable” and the Christian Heaven is a place of comfort. Drearbruh is Harrow’s Home; “Home” is a common Christian synonym for Heaven and “coming Home” is a common Christian synonym for going to Heaven.
Harrow has Crossed the River, and come Home, to Rest, in a Heaven of her own making.
[1]And also, just cuz I refuse to be unthorough, European two-handers are perennially cruciform. Harrow, by embracing it, is, by necessity, embracing a cross.

Cristofano Allori (1577-1621), Giuditta con la testa di Oloferne (Judith with the head of Holofernes), 1613; olio su tela, 120 x 100 cm; Royal Collection

Fic :: The Locked Tomb Trilogy :: The Invitation :: Chapter 2 (/3)
Title: The Invitation, Chapter 2 Fandom: The Locked Tomb Pairing: Gideon/Harrow, Gideon/Harrow/Ianthe, Ianthe/Judith, Judith/Corona, Ianthe/Corona, Corona/Camilla/Palamedes, Gideon/Harrow/Ianthe/Judith/Corona/Palamedes Rating: E Word count: 11k overall (last chapter is 6k) Tags: SO MANY. Okay, here goes: sexy parties, lyctorhood, imperfect lyctorhood, perfect lyctorhood, sex pollen, of a sort, kissing, vaginal fingering, anal fingering, squirting, avulsion, soul siphoning, masturbation, soul sex, cunnilingus, orgy, multiple orgasms, really old people getting it on, far future, future fic, post-canon, non-linear narrative, reciprocal soul siphoning, voyeurism, pov multiple, Ulysses’ Lyctor Lubrication Liquor, get those juices flowing, let the good times roll, etc etc, ianthe/gideon/harrow/corona/judith/camilla/palamedes, was too long to tag, dildos, intoxication, face-fucking, face-sitting, bone restraints, over the underwear, twincest, via 3rd party brain links and siphoning, no touching twincest, canon-typical third house vibes
Summary:
Ianthe felt the change in the air as they started to arrive. She couldn't see them, but she saw how her people reacted and she knew them well enough to know who would show up first. Coronabeth, ever faithful. Judith Deuteros, always punctual. Camilla-and-Palamedes, forever dull and predictable. And finally Harrow and Gideon, later than the rest, but still twenty minutes early.
She’d been planning this for a very long time, ever since she found the ancient relics in a box on an abandoned station: Ulysses the First's journals. Ulysses the First's box of party tricks.
Everything was going to change again.
Ianthe was going to blow their damn minds.

Trump is our last hope I for one have confidence in you and your Administration Mr President Also I am fed up with the Dems who would not be happy with any thing you do Thank goodness we the people know them well And if anyone out there is not sure just go look at the behavior of Nancy Pelosi and her dressed in white clan s behavior during our President s SOTU address That behavior Is the worst that I have EVER seen from elected leaders I felt terrible discomfort knowing that that behavior was being seen all over the world Just think about that Let that sink in people please God help this country if THOSE people ever make up the majority of our Leaders Carmelo Consiglio Trumps been cutting funding for the CDC since taking office If there’s not an outbreak in the USA it will be a miracle Hell today he’s trying to put a bunch of patients in a condemned building in the OC instead of a FEMA facility Maxx Alexander It’s ok nobody with a decent brain and a clue has missed the media being completely negative and dishonestly so No better President we could ever ask for than you Especially when times are challenging Christine Ward Roe I think the media isn’t helping by blowing this up in the news remember China delayed by 6 weeks and let the virus spread but the US has acted very quickly to contain it especially by Trump imposing travel restrictions and quarantines otherwise we would look like Italy but the dumbard Dems are upset with the his travel ban what the heck. Lots of links today so I'll keep this short: we had a great time at Data Bites 12 this week, an administrative data special courtesy of ADR UK. Catch up on the presentations - covering health, coronavirus, Troubled Families, homelessness reduction, justice, and population data (and how to engage the public) -  and my lockdown hair here. Previous events all here. We'll see you on either Wednesday 5 August or Wednesday 2 September for the next one.
Elsewhere:
A busy week on the civil service reform front. Jane Dudman's article for The Guardian has lots of links to Whitehall Monitor analysis (all our civil service workforce analysis is here). And obviously there's been plenty from the IfG too.
The winners of this year's Orwell Prizes will be announced next Thursday. Full details about how that will play out will appear here soon.
Have a good weekend, and see you next week
Gavin
