I’ve almost no understanding of linguistics. But this post and also @thefoundationproject ‘s fics, which include bits about how the Journeyman Protector dialect might be related to Standard Mando’a, have me trying to hypothesize Mandalorian language trees. based on what we know about Mandalorian history.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I KNOW some of you are language nerds and I also did this in fifteen minutes please yell at me about your own headcanons and also about everything I got wrong/missed/forgot. It would be cool to turn it into a real graph to reference eventually (:

That feeling when you’re flipping through the 1998 Star Wars Encyclopedia and come across this:

Image ID:
Concord Dawn The birthplace of Journeyman Protector Jaster Mereel, who later changed his name to Boba Fett after being exiled from the planet for killing another protector. Mereel was imprisoned on Concord Dawn and unsuccessfully defended in court by the Pleader Irving Creel. [TBH]

Jango Fett' childhood on Concord Dawn
One of the things that I think bothers me the most about Jango Fett: Open Seasons comics series is how a 8 (or 10) years old Jango was told by his dad to repair a harvester
Tumblr media
and then… left alone for who knows how long in the middle of a crop field?
Tumblr media
I was born in the city so obviously I don’t know how life on a farm goes and all so forgive me my ignorance but:
A) Jango was introduced with a weapon in his hand, while he walked through his own family’s property
Tumblr media
and was taught by father how to use a blaster at the age of 8 - 10.
Tumblr media
At this point in the story, I think it is safe to assume Jango’s dad knew Mandalorians were in his field, as he brought food to Jaster and his men. So I assume he was contacted by comlink or he already talked in person with Jaster and he probably had some idea of what was going on - unless Jaster didn’t warn him about Death Watch on his trail, but I think this is pretty unlikely, as the Mandalorians stayed hidden in the field, instead of coming to Fett’s house.
So there is a reason to think that leaving a kid alone in the middle of the field was not the smartest idea.
B) Jango has never been any technology genius or even that good with it in sources? His jetpack was repaired by a droid whose main job was to take care of little Boba on Kamino. I’m pretty sure Jango as a Mandalorian Merc was capable of maintaining his armor, weapons and ship but if the harvester was so important to put back into use - and I assume this is the case, as Fett’s parents were usually described as simple farmers and the first part of comics clearly represents the season of summer (childhood) and this was very likely grain harvest time  - then I would not pick a kid to do the job, unless the kid was Anakin Skywalker who could fix all kind of machinery, as it was his specific gift. Jango though? I’m not so sure about his 8-10 year old self’ skills.
Of course, the harvester’s problem could be a simple matter but then why not send Arla, Jango’s older sister (14 years old) to either do the job, or help Jango to speed up the repairs? Not saying Arla did not have her own share of duties and all (unless the kids were treated unfair, as Arla did not hold/use a gun against the invaders
Tumblr media
but that could be just matter of her being too terrified or there could be not enough guns which is why only the mother was armed), but considering how the comics implies that Jango’s dad, mother and Arla were at home when he was working during sunny (if not hot) day, in the middle of a field, no shadow, repairing a vehicle bothers me a lot.
And sure, on Concord Dawn living on farm could be just that tough even for kids, but looking at AotC novel (that admittedly does not mention Jango’s time with Mandalorians at all)
Other than that, though, this was just a  job,  well  paying  and  easy enough. Financially, he couldn't have asked for more,  but  more  important, only the Kaminoans could have given him Boba - not just a son,  but  an  exact replica. Boba would give Jango the pleasure of seeing all that he might have become had he grown up with a loving and caring father, a mentor  who  cared enough to criticize, to force him to perfection.
or
This, then, was Jango Fett's greatest reward, right here, sitting  with his son, his young replica, sharing quiet moments.   Quiet moments within the tumult that had been Jango Fett's entire life, surviving the trials of the Outer Rim alone  practically  from  the  day  he learned to walk. Each trial  had  made  him  stronger,  had  made  him  more perfect, had honed the skills that he would now pass along  to  Boba.
and old source material like outdated starwars.com’s databank entry:
Fett all but disappeared from bounty hunting circles as he took time to raise his son. He sought to experience what his life might have been like had he been raised by a caring guardian.
I can’t help but wonder about Jango’s childhood before the Mandalorians showed up.
So far my research showed, only Fact Files v.3 #14 mentioned he had "as idyllic a life as could be while making a living off the land, in close family unit with his mother, father and sister, Arla"
Tumblr media
which gives some hope Jango's childhood although tough, was a relative happy one.
[Just to be clear here: I don’t think Jango’s biological family was by any means pathological, I just think Concord Dawn is a pathological place as this planet's record is not the best when it comes to people's backstories.]

Concord Dawn was an agricultural world located in the Outer Rim Territories. A Mandalorian colony, a sizable portion of the planet was destroyed during an ancient conflict. Concord Dawn was politically important in the Mandalore sector, and was the homeworld of Jango Fett.

In the Glade of the Moon-hares
Super excited to be doing an art trade with the incredibly sweet and amazingly talented @quinnimae, and honestly couldn’t be more flattered that they wanted Ahuska included in their piece!
So here she is showing the adorable Mio a secret little nature watching spot out in the ranges on Concord Dawn, and being very invested in how Mio reacts to seeing the native critters out and about, foraging in the moonlight. Big illustrations like this always take so much more time and effort and focus and fussing, but I’m always so pleased to see them through, and I got to put together so many things I love here.

A Mandalorian who speaks Mando'a with a Keldabe accent and Basic with a Ringo Vindan accent vs a Mandalorian who speaks Mando'a with a Concord Dawn accent and Basic with a Coruscanti accent
Oooh. Interesting scenarios.
Keldabe accent suggests that they grew up on Mandalore. *before* 42 BBY (when the city was devastated in a civil war). This would suggest a couple things about them: 1.) their home was devastated in the war, 2.) they likely would have moved with the big shift to Sundari (and the move to the pacifistic ideology). But Keldabe was the sphere of influence for the traditionalist factions, no? So, they would have likely been raised more traditional? Would this have created resentment toward the pacifists for 'destroying' their home and way of life, leading them down the path of Death Watch? Or would they have forsaken that ideology with the big cultural shift? If it weren't for the Ringo Vindan accent, I'd say they'd probably have lived in Sundari as a New Mandalorian. A Ringo Vindan accent is a very particular character design choice. What were they doing on Ringo Vinda? The closest trade route to Mandalore is the Hydian way and I don't think the planets are close enough to have an influence on each other. This *could* suggest the person is maybe a trader or itinerant worker, but I think it would more-so suggest an alliance with the CIS (which would back up the Death Watch path theory).
Mando'a with a Concord Dawn accent suggests they learned Mando'a on Concord Dawn. That would suggest more of a connection to the Jango Fetts of the Mandalorian world and, maybe later, the Mandalorian Protectors. It has always been known as a homeworld for elite warriors, so they'd likely fall into this category. During the clone wars, this being a "warrior" *could* lead to favoring Death Watch in the war, but I feel they'd elect to be independent. I think this individual could be more likely favor an itinerant lifestyle than the person in the previous scenario. However, having a Courscanti accent suggests that they maybe learned basic in an academy in Sundari (like the one Korkie went to) or that they frequented Coruscant or even went to school on Coruscant. That would suggest the child of politicians or affluent individuals. You'd have to spend a good chunk of time on Coruscant to pick up the accent, more time than a trader or such would spend on the planet. So, maybe a New Mandalorian or a member of Satine's cabinet or an imperial sympathizer (depending on the era). I could theoretically see someone raised as an elite warrior forsaking that ideology after seeing what it did to their planet in some great war.
Very interesting hypotheticals. What do you think?

Loose writing thoughts for Mando S3:
The mines definitely still exist but are nigh unreachable. Use the Darksaber to cut a way through? And Grogu can lift some rocks. Teamwork!
The visuals are bound to be stunning, but I really hope we get another epic shot of Concord Dawn, this time in realistic space artstyle.
There were children in the Nevarro covert, I refuse to believe they died. Working theory - Paz and the Armourer are the only ones alive who managed to keep their buckets on in the fighting, that's why they're the only two left. Potential for worldview change and character development.
Bo-Katan managed to stay alive. I will be extremely mad if we don't get at least an update on the Wrens and the Protectors. Preferably both in the form of Sabine and Fenn Rau. The Darksaber is back and in some very mandokarla hands, the Honour Guard should at least drop by.
Where there is Sabine, there must be an update on Ezra.
I've steered far from any leaks, spoilers, and suchlike, so I might be completely off the mark. But there is so much potential there.

Last Line Challenge
Rules: In a new post, show the last line you wrote (or drew) and tag as many people as there are words (or as you feel like).
Thank you so, so much to @cookiemonsterv3 for the tag!! I’ve always wanted to do one of these <3
I can’t spoil this one too much, but I will say it’s a codywanweek fic for the Day 4: Soulmate AU prompt (that I am desperately trying to finish even as it gets longer and longer, oops)
Fox raises an eyebrow at him. “Did you seriously stop wearing your kama because Obi-Wan said you have nice legs?” Cody’s ears burn. “That’s not—” “No, wait,” Fox interrupts, searching Cody’s face for something. He seems to find whatever it is he’s looking for, because his eyes light up with unrestrained manic glee. “It’s worse than that, isn’t it?” Cody prays for a quick death. Fox’s smile widens into something positively feral. “You want less layers between your legs and his when he pins you in a spar. Cody, you dog.” Scratch that. Cody will not beg for death. Not before he kills his ori’tat.
