So, aro/ace Yangchen can still be kinky right. Speaking from experience. With that said, I urge you to consider Yangchen/Yingsu sparring sessions. Thank you.

*SPOILERS FOR DAWN OF YANGCHEN*
Tumblr media
I actually finished the book a while ago, about two days after I bought it when it came out, it just took me a while to get my thoughts on paper as it were.
I'd like to preface this by saying I did enjoy the book and I am looking forward to the sequel. That said, there a few things I didn't much care for.
My biggest gripe was probably the fact that the majority of the book was from Kavik's pov. It's the Dawn of Yangchen, not the dawn of some random guy she picked up.
Another thing is that the story is a political drama. This is more a personal thing than any failing on the books part but I can't stand political dramas. Part of the reason for that is that I like to imagine myself in the position of the characters and think about what I would do in their place. That's not as fun with political stories as it's usually just me strong arming everyone until I get my way. It's the same problem I had with Shadow of Kyoshi and while she was smart enough to realize she was wrong, I probably would have ended up killing someone who turned out to be innocent. Like I said, not as fun.
All that said, I did like the book. Yangchen is exactly my kind of character. The same sense of justice and fairness for all that I believe in while still not being completely naive. And the ending of the book was so nerve racking and exciting I forgot all about my gripes with the politics.
I especially love the situation Yangchen put herself in by imprisoning the combustion benders. They all know they can't hold them there forever and they're far too dangerous to go free. The readers, and possibly the characters as well, know the only practical solution is to kill them (as spirit bending isn't a thing yet) but Yangchen doesn't even let herself think of that option. It leads so perfectly to what she said to Aang about how their duty to the world goes beyond any personal beliefs. It's so perfect in fact that I can't help but hope the consequences of her choice here come back to bite her in the sequel.
Overall, while I still think Rise of Kyoshi is the best book in the series; the Dawn of Yangchen is a solid read, at least as good as Shadow of Kyoshi. If you haven't read it already, I highly recommend you doing so.

uoghoughghg bloodbender au follow-up
(idk if any of you watched rottmnt and caught the reference here but i'm making this phil act more like a draxum-type character. there will be more references to draxum in the future. this is a threat.)
extra notes under the cut vvvv
phil wont get attached to these kids, he's a warrior after all (he gets attached after like a month lmaoooo)
missa first only came to the human world for it's music - he hates humans actually. after chayanne and tallulah showed him kindness though he started street performing and gave his earnings to the two of them
missa doesn't pull the wet cat act with phil here he gives that man passive aggressive hell
maybe phil disturbed something in the spirit world and it pissed missa off?
phil's plan is to move around unpredictably in order to evade someone and the kids follow him (to his irritation)
if i ever make this into a full on story i imagine they'd go to the earth kingdom first, where foolish and tubbo are building a city of their own that phil wants to seek refuge in
they go undercover most places (hence the different outfits) because phil is wanted in literally every country
cellbit is being held in a prison in the fire nation for bloodbending. while scouting ways to break him out, roier found pepito and brought him back to foolish
bagi is also a bloodbender but she barely uses her abilites. chayanne might seek her out later on in the story
roier carries a spool of metal rope and uses it to swing between buildings
charlie is a water bender and lives in the foggy swamp with juanaflippa
vegetta and willy are combustion benders
jaiden baghera and carre are air benders
etoiles can bend lightning
pepito is taught earth bending by foolish and roier, water bending by cellbit and juannaflippa (sometimes), air bending by carre and fire bending by leonarda
no dead eggs there will be no sadness (there will be sadness but i like the dead eggs and they cant bend if they're dead)
tallulah thinks chay wants to meet cellbit to learn blood bending, but in reality he wants cellbit to remove his bending entirely
if you've read this far you're being perceived YOU'RE BEING PERCEIVED OOGABOOGABOOGA NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE-
please bear in mind I'm not an expereinced writer in the slightest and i've never had the balls to make an au before so please bear with me as I get a better understanding of the qsmp characters. there are dozens of people to account for and i want to be fair and accurate with who i portray. k thx luv u all /platonic BYEEEEE

Continuing with my Avatar generation swap, here we have a group of teenage assassins coming after Korra
Ming-Hua, now a combustion bender. Zaheer, a spiritually-attuned wanderer, P'Li, a lavabender, and Ghazan, their plant (and blood) bender.
I will not apologise for Ghazan. He grows into... all of it.

TF2 x ATLA AU :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lore, close ups, and doodles underneath !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scout, Pauling, and Ludwig are the main three- scout, who’s an (admittedly shitty) airbender but not the avatar, who ran away after his father left. Once spotted by fire nation soldiers, he is presumed to be the avatar- and scout basks in the glory of his false identity. Pauling- a studious, too serious for her own good, non-bender, who’s Medic’s student. She’s of the southern water tribe, treating medic like her paternal figure after the disappearance of her aunt. Medic is (unbeknownst to pauling and scout) a blood bender who was exiled for his practices. He doesn’t seem to care for anyone or anything, also being very jovial and cheery.
All Pauling and Scout know is that Ludwig was exiled from the northern water tribe then fled to the south for an undisclosed reason. Pauling never bothered to pry and the Scout was too intimidated to. Here the avatar cycle has indeed been broken. It’s up to a group of nine ragtag men and one mousy girl to defeat Gray Mann.
Tumblr media
And the main three villains are soldier, demo, and sniper who're all fire nation folk. Sort of the team rocket; never truly competent enough to cause real damage, that or their hearts truly aren’t in it.
Soldier's a fire bender who specializes in jet propulsion and was kicked out of the army. He thinks if he steals back the avatar, they'll let him back in. A weapon since childhood, once a bully, always a bully, or so he’s heard.Character arc being the realization the fire nation army isn't worth fighting for. Surprisingly, he is very good with spirits, opposite to his best friend, Tavish, who despises them.
Demo’s just trying to impress his mum and be a good friend to the Soldier. People pleasing tendencies, that's his character arc. He's supposedly a non bender who's mighty good with swords; but underneath his inconspicuous-ish eye patch holds a combustion bending tattoo. Only Jane knows this. Well-versed in calligraphy.
Sniper is a 26 year old yuyan archer who was discharged for failing a mission while he was young. He joined the other two with the same goal as the Soldier. His yuyan archer tattoo still remains. He's a non bender with excellent aim, who grew up on the rural outskirts of the fire nation. His character arc is something about not adhering to expectations and learning who he's fighting for; a combination of the demoman and the soldier’s lessons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spy's a crusty airbender constantly sporting a mask to hide his tattoos, and knife. Nobody has a clue where he's from and he takes orders from whoever pays him best. His airbending tricks are so subtle, the public believes him to be a crafty nonbender. Usually said tricks are only invisibility and voice alteration. While not assassinating political figures he traverses the spirit world looking for his wife, a fellow air nomad, avoiding physical aging in brief sprints of time. He returns on a well paid mission to kill the “avatar,” which was presumably the scout. Little does he know, that weird whiteboy is just some lame airbender. Who’s also his son. His bad.
Engineers the metalbender; an art perfected by his ancestors and passed down in whispers to him. I haven't developed him much. He teaches the Scout what he knows while obscuring information on how he got that metal arm. Him and the Pyro have a shared love of blacksmithing. From an explosion, he thinks..
Pyro's a spirit probably. Nobody knows what he is. Where he’s from? Pyro. What’s his gender? Pyro. Guy who sets things on fire. Presumably human judging by his questionable use of what looks to be fire bending. And also the Spy's companion! They met in the spirit world. He and the Soldier form a close bond quite quickly thanks to their good graces with spirits (to Tavish’s immense dismay).
Heavy's an earth bender who continues to win in underground fights. Residing in ba sing se with his three sisters and elderly mother, scout pauling and medic meet him in an earth bender championship. Despite what his appearance suggests, his patience is unmatched, which is his greatest strength. He has near -perfect seismic sense. He and the Medic get on quite well, and after the fire lord has been struck down, form a duo in the ring, earning even more won championships.

can’t believe there’s people that believe zuko is a better fire bender than azula. he’s also one of my favorite characters, but azula’s fire is literally blue, perfect combustion. it’s insane how she’s the only one who produces it in the show

TF2 x ATLA crossover lineart
Pyro and Demo are firebenders each for their own reasons. Soldier is a non-bender from the Fire Nation Colonies
Soldier: The Fire Nation is an extremely patriotic country that revers their leader. They are also shown to be highly militarized as well. I feel like Soldier would be a Fire Nation reject born in the Fire Colonies who voluntarily forced himself into a war where he was not wanted, and proceeded to kill Earth Benders until someone told him that the Avatar brought an end to the war. He's a non-bender, but that doesn't stop him from using a homemade cannon that shoots fireworks to launch himself into the air.
Pyro: Self explanatory.
Demo: A combustion bender (because explosives). He struggled as a child to use his family's gift, and unlocked the ability to combustion bend while sweeping a library in the desert as a kid. No Degroot worth their mettle have lived to thirty with an eye in their head and both arms intact!
Lemme know if you want me to colour this

Yknow, i'm rewatching atla after reading the yangchen novels, and I really appreciate the small meaning behind some things a lot more now. In s3 e11 The Western Air Temple, combustion man shows up and wrecks the place. I always found this sad because the preservation of air nomad culture and architecture was something shown many times to be important to Aang, so the temple being destroyed is really tragic in that way. But also, Yangchen is a western air temple nun. And we can see statues of her there in the episode. So reading the novels and then seeing how her statue is focused on more at the western than any other is a nice touch that shows how much detail the og show had in it. These little nods to what eventually would become lore is amazing.
But as much awe as it inspires, theres symbolism without (imo) even trying to be. In the Yangchen novels, combustion bending is seen for the first time in the atla world, it was written as the biggest plot point and the worldwide threat of the novels. And we see Yangchen and her struggle against it. Things like Nujians death, Yangchens banishment, all of her struggles in the novels are some sort of result from her dealing with combustion benders. And she is from the western air temple. Which is salt in a centuries old wound. Yangchen, an air nomad, a pacifist by culture, who worked so hard to avoid taking lives when she was able, who lost so much because of combustion bending as a technique, who came from the western air temple,
Her home, was destroyed
By the very
Technique
That cost her so much already.
