Getting close enough to wildlife for a clear shot through my lens takes an enormous amount of patience and the ability to lie in wait for hours, sometimes days at a time. I learned from an early age how to tread softly in the tracks of animals and never disrupt their day-to-day behavior. Sometimes, however, I get caught off-guard by an animal who has absolutely no regard for all my meticulous planning and tracking. As I was on my way to photograph wandering albatross in South Georgia for @Natgeo, this baby fur seal suddenly came charging out from the tall grass with an attitude and confidence that far exceeded his size. I tried my hardest to stifle my laughter as I snapped a couple of shots and politely backed away. Almost a third of the Earth will need to be protected by 2030 and pollution cut by half to save our remaining wildlife, as we enter the planet’s sixth era of mass extinction, according to a United Nations agency. The UN Convention on Biological Diversity released a draft plan on Monday, which sets global goals to combat the ongoing biodiversity crisis in the coming decades. "Queen of Katma" / Through the long barrel of my lens, I could see the toll of a tough season written in the muddy pools of this mother grizzly's eyes. She was clearly wary of her surroundings as she led her cubs to the river's edge to gorge on fish. During the seasonal salmon runs, giant males tend to guard the choicest fishing spots along the river and would not think twice about going after her young. She must be alert, attentive, and focused at every minute to provide for her family while keeping them safe. The responsibility she shouldered was enormous, and yet I saw nothing but warmth, calm, and deep wisdom when she lifted her head and looked right at me. Survival in the Alaskan wilderness is about treading with caution. Royal Dutch Shell said its oil production and carbon emissions have peaked as it detailed plans to gradually wean itself off fossil fuels. Climate activists said it hadn't gone far enough. The Anglo-Dutch company said Thursday that it expects its oil production to decline by between 1% and 2% each year after peaking in 2019.
