I am so thankful to have been raised in a household filled with music. My mother and grandmother especially took care to immerse me in the full range. From Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich, and Miles Davis to Pink Floyd and The Who. Going to concerts was encouraged. What an eye-opening childhood.
Dave Brubeck - Take Five (1959)
The 1950s, a transformative period in the world of music, bore witness to the emergence of some of the most innovative sounds, many of which blurred the lines between genres. Within this musical renaissance, Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" emerged, a piece that would go on to become one of the most recognized and influential jazz tracks of all time.
From the moment its iconic rhythms begin, "Take Five" draws listeners into a realm of musical sophistication and innovation. Composed by Paul Desmond and performed by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, the track is renowned for its unusual 5/4 time signature, a departure from the standard meters commonly employed in jazz. This unique rhythm gives the composition its distinctive feel, a mesmerizing interplay of patterns that feel both novel and familiar.
The allure of "Take Five" isn't limited to its rhythm. Its haunting saxophone melody, delivered masterfully by Desmond, intertwines seamlessly with Brubeck's piano, painting a sonic picture that's both moody and uplifting. The track's structure, which allows each band member to showcase their virtuosity, embodies the spirit of jazz improvisation, making each listening experience feel fresh and spontaneous.
While "Take Five" may have been groundbreaking in its structure and sound, its impact extended far beyond the world of jazz enthusiasts. It resonated with a broad audience, becoming a mainstream hit and introducing many to the complexities and joys of jazz music. The song's success was not just a testament to its quality but also to the changing tastes of the era, with audiences becoming more receptive to experimentation and innovation in music.
In the pantheon of jazz classics, "Take Five" holds a special place. It is a reminder of a time when boundaries were pushed, conventions were challenged, and the result was a piece of music that remains timeless in its appeal.

Discovering Pablo Picasso as a young person changed the course of my life. His work showed me that there were always other ways to look at anything. I remember his quote (I think I have it right) "Because it's in your imagination doesn't make it any less real". His imagination was boundless.
