Cleos Frey is a compelling little man to be honest... he really is put into a shit position by both sides and he’s just desperately trying to figure out how to extricate himself from the whole thing but he just can’t because of who his parents are. Cleos Frey could have said: "I will require a sword and armor. It seems I must be an negotiation envoy. No chance, and no choice." but instead he's thinking "please please give me another choice I can't be the guy" Born to keep his head down forced to do war negotiations. funny and sad

While I was working on these, I had the niggling thought that Emmon's portrait looks something like my father in law >.> He has a different chin, but there's a shape to the eyes which I recognized. These portraits stop feeling like human faces sometimes when I've been working on them too long - this kind of odd familiarity shatters my dissociation entirely.

Do we know if Cleos is a younger cousin to the main Lannisters or older?

so maybe we DO have things to say about Cleos. but no we don’t know his age. wiki says the earliest he could have been born is 257 AC (which would make him nine years older than the twins but would also mean Genna was TWELVE so I think NOT) and the youngest he could’ve been born would be 276AC (making him ten years younger than the twins).

I think it’s probably a given in this universe that Genna would’ve been expected to give Emmon a child somewhere around 18-20, so Cleos being the eldest of her sons I’d imagine him born somewhere between 263AC and 265AC, making him slightly older than the twins.

Anyway tragically I kind of imagine Genna doting more on Tywin’s children than she did him lol

J/B Week 2023: Day Seven

On this last day of J/B Week 2023, I just want to say to the community that I'm glad for everyone that's a part of it. Whether you write, read, leave kudos and/or comments--or even if you're shy and just lurk, you're keeping the J/B flames going until George gets around to giving us more logs for the fire!

Question seven: Which J/B moment do you think is underrated?

This was a tough one because I think all their moments are appreciated--we've had so long since the last book that we've mined the books (and the show, for those who prefer it) for every little detail and nuance. However, one aspect of their universe I feel is underrated is Jaime's relationship with Ilyn Payne. We focus so much on Brienne's growing relationship with Podrick, but the person who Jaime travels with the most doesn't get much notice. I get that it's because Podrick is a boy and a sweetheart and he's not appearing on anybody's list of people to be killed (except the Brotherhood without Banners, but screw them). Still, Ilyn's probably the closest thing Jaime's got to a companion at this point and he doesn't get nearly the attention that Pod does. Which is a shame because I have a feeling that he's quite an interesting character. If he does turn out to be TWOW prologue character, which I'd be sad about because it means he'll end up dying, I'll be curious to get into his head to find out what he's really thought of Jaime all this time.

I love your analysis of Tywin’s creed of Lannister superiority. How do you think it affects Kevan and Tygett’s kids? Especially since their fathers had such second place status to Tywin.

This is something we have next to no information on (we just don't know most of these kids). But even with the very minimal information we have, I think there's an effect and we see that in how his first cousins interact with Jaime.

First is Cleos Frey. Yeah, sure, he's a Frey, but he's still a cousin.

Jaime smiled knowingly. Men will read all sorts of things into a knowing smile, if you let them. Has cousin Cleos truly swallowed this kettle of dung, or is he striving to ingratiate himself? What do we have here, an honest muttonhead or a lickspittle? Ser Cleos prattled blithely on. "Any man who'd believe that a Sworn Brother of the Kingsguard would harm a child does not know the meaning of honor." Lickspittle. Jaime I, ASoS

Jaime was on the lookout for someone sucking up to him - and Cleos being a cousin did not get him even the slightest benefit of the doubt. There's no familial loyalty here, just ingratiation.

Why? That's when we look to Lancel.

Lancel shuddered. "Seven save me, but I wanted to be you." Jaime IV, AFFC

Those cousins are not immune from looking on Tywin's branch of the family and their wealth and their power and their notoriety and thinking I want that. It looks to me like the young men, at least, amongst the cousins feel the inferiority that Tywin wanted everyone to feel when they looked at the Lannisters.

Jaime took one look and burst into song. "Six maids there were in a spring-fed pool . . ." Jamie III - Page 285

Our heroes travel through Maidenpool and see more carnage, most notably its famous pond being polluted by corpses. Naturally, Jamie has to open his big mouth.

It took me some time to decide how to do this picture before decided to have Jamie, Brienne, and Cleos riding in the foreground. Regrettably, there wasn't much room to show Maidenpool. It might be just as well. My best reference for medieval villages has been the paintings of Bruegel, and his villages are intact.
