Well, the night before my first official “high risk” mission is as good as time as any to start a diary. 

I say “high risk”- even though I haven’t been here long I’ve come to learn nearly every mission is “high risk”. I’m not sure why we even bother with the label at this point. Maybe it’s just some kind of hold-out from when this was more of a war and less “everything is fucked and almost everybody is dead”. 

It’s not worth getting pessimistic right now. I’ve already abandoned every last remnant of my old life to join this fight, and now the day has come that they’re ready to throw whatever life I have left away to further the cause. Colin McIntyre told me “the trick is to not die.” I know he’s not one to make jokes, but cmon. What kind of advice is that? 

Well, McIntyre is going with me on this mission so maybe I’ll get to see that advice in action. When you’ve got somebody high-ranking like him along on the mission, it can mean either two things. Either they really don’t care about my life and are using me as fodder to keep him alive, or they really care about my life and he’s my de facto bodyguard. I really hope it’s the latter. 

Command said I’ve got incredible training, endurance and aptitude, and that’s why they let me join without any formal training or past experience in war, but how am I supposed to believe that? How am I supposed to believe I’ll actually have a chance?

Well, I’m writing from the carrier now. This is it. Hopefully you aren’t reading this, or if you are it’s because we won the war and the whole journal is being published in some museum or something. That’d be pretty cool. 

Claudia Neumann is mocking me for keeping a journal, but I can tell she’s just as nervous as I am. This is her first mission too. We’re close to touchdown. I guess we’ll find out which one of us is the fodder.

I thought I was ready for this. I guess I am, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. Command said we got lucky, this was a lightly-guarded objective and we didn’t meet much resistance. It didn’t feel like we got lucky. 

Romero got caught by surprise. If it was anybody else, they’d be dead for sure. I thought he might bleed out on the carrier back, but he told me this is “just par for the course.” 

I guess I understand what McIntyre meant. With Romero injured, Neumann and I were ready to hunker down and stick to what cover we could find. McIntyre would just. charge in there! He didn’t give a fuck! And the aliens didn’t know how to handle him either. Guess the only way to take ‘em down is head-on. 

They say that I’ll likely get put on the next mission with Romero too banged up to go. Guess I was just too good. But it’s what I signed up for.

Sent with McIntyre on a mission to meet with the Reapers, some wacked-out faction that supposedly is going to help our mission. Everything about this screams bad news, but they really are willing to send only me and McIntyre to meet with our target? I guess I got my answer. XCOM has a lot of faith in me, we’ll see if I live up to it. Here’s hoping the Reaper doesn’t kill us both.

I don’t know what the hell a “chosen” is, but I don’t think I could get much more fucked up than I was on today’s mission. Some giant invisible alien stabbed me. And I LIVED! I kicked ass! Command is promoting me again, they’re saying I’m one of the most valuable soldiers we’ve got. Even McIntyre said I ‘held up out there’. 

Can we talk about McIntyre for a second? That guy is insane. In the last 3 missions he’s recorded 28 kills. When I thought my life was about to end, the guy runs up to that Chosen and fucking stabs it back! He might be the only reason why I’m still alive, now that I think about it. I’ll have to buy him a drink one of these days. If we keep getting paired up like this, at least I’ll know I’m out there with somebody who’s really got my back. I just hope I’m capable enough to do the same for him.

S-a lansat cartea PHOENIX. HAR/JAR. Primele reacții după premiera filmului.

Filmul documentar „Phoenix. Har/Jar” regizat de Cornel Mihalache și realizat de Televiziunea Română prin Casa de Producție TVR a avut premiera pe TVR 1, odata cu lansarea cartii, cu același nume, apărută la Editura Integral. Mircea Baniciu, Andrei Ujică, alături de mare parte din echipa filmului, reprezentanți ai presei și persoane din industria de film, au avut ocazia să vadă filmul, cu o seară înainte, într-o proiecție specială ce a avut loc la Cinema Union. O dată cu ei, Josef Kappl, Moni Bordeianu, Costin Petrescu, Erika Jozsa-Demian, Claudiu Rotaru și Mani Neumann au văzut filmul din țările în care se află în prezent, Phoenix. Har/Jar văzându-se astfel concomitent în șapte colțuri diferite ale lumii. Mai mult, aceștia s-au reunit via Zoom și au discutat cu publicul prezent în sală.

„Iată în sfârșit un documentar realizat de o echipă absolut profesionistă, care reușește să transmită istoria unei Legende, văzută prin prisma acelora care au creat-o și trăit-o!” a fost prima reacție a lui Josef Kappl după vizionare. „Este un concept radical și curajos să construiești un film care leagă propoziție cu propoziție, ca și cum ar fi o singură frază ce durează 104 minute, 26 de capete vorbitoare din aceeași plasă de timp comun.” a declarat Andrei Ujică. „Un film, în primul rând, adevărat care aduce în față interviuri ale membrilor trupei. Phoenix a fost un cumul de energie, un cumul de imagini care au rămas în picioare și cred că asta arată filmul și cartea. E un moment al adevărului despre Phoenix.”  a precizat Mircea Baniciu. Phoenix. Har/Jar reunește membrii formației din perioada de dinaintea plecării din 1977 și punctează momentele importante din cronologia tumultuoasă a trupei, de la primele apariții din 1962 sub numele de „Sfinții”, până în prezent, povestind, în premieră, întâmplările prin care au trecut în țară, relația cu Securitatea, momentele în care au hotărât să fugă din România și cum au reușit s-o facă, dar și viața pe care au dus-o peste hotare înainte și după Revoluția din ’89. Phoenix. Har/Jar este istoria unei trupe legendare care a renăscut timp de 60 de ani indiferent de vremuri, vârste și orgolii, este povestea unei generații.

Prima fotografie făcută în Germania, trimisă în țară de Nicu Covaci mamei lui „Proiectul a intrat în portofoliul Casei de Producție TVR în luna iunie 2022 la inițiativa lui Mișu Predescu, directorul departamentului. La sfârșitul lunii aveam, împreună cu Cornel Mihalache, prima întâlnire cu Nicu Covaci. Au fost 5 luni intense - interviuri, vizionarea arhivelor lui Doru Ionescu - colegul nostru care are 8 emisiuni dedicate formației Phoenix, citirea cărților publicate de Costel Postolache la Editura Integral, vizionări arhive video, scanat fotografii arhive, transpuneri fișiere audio… Deseori ne întrebam ce mai putem spune noi în plus față de ce a spus deja Doru și ce s-a scris în cărți, în presă… Discu��iile cu membrii formației și cu cei apropiați lor ne-au îndreptat ușor-ușor spre arhivele CNSAS pentru care, toți cei care apar în film, ne-au dat acordul de a le citi dosarele și de a folosi informațiile pentru a putea construi cât mai corect povestea cinematografică a începuturilor, a fugii, a durerilor și reușitelor, a certurilor și împăcărilor, a despărțirilor și regăsirilor a celor care au creat românilor ‚iluzia unei posibile libertăți’. Filmul Phoenix. Har/Jar e construit cu multă măiestrie de Cornel ca un dialog, ca o poveste spusă de o singură voce. Tare mult îmi doresc ca și membrii formației și presa și spectatorii obișnuiți să treacă dincolo de vorbele lor, de gândurile lor și să vadă emoțiile - singurele a căror sinceritate și veridicitate nu poate fi negată.” spune Claudia Nedelcu Duca – producătorul filmului. Premiera filmului a fost dublată de lansarea cărții Phoenix. Har/Jar ce conține interviuri din perioada 1962-1989 plus inserturi grafice din Arhivele Securității, deținute de Consiliul Național pentru Studierea Arhivelor Securității. Textele prezentate în carte conțin transcrierea integrală a interviurilor realizate în studiourile TVR și în alte locații din țară și străinătate. La sfârșitul fiecărui interviu din carte sunt inserate coduri QR care, prin scanare, deschid documente video, conținând fragmente inedite neincluse în filmul realizat de Televiziunea Română. Cartea a fost lansată în cadrul Târgului de carte Gaudeamus Radio România, în prezența lui Mircea Baniciu, a lui Andrei Ujică, a regizorului Cornel Mihalache, a producătorului Claudia Nedelcu Duca, a lui Andrei Galiță – reprezentant CNSAS și a lui Costel Postolache, directorului Editurii Integral. „Dacă ar fi s-o înscriem în seria titlurilor legate de Phoenix la Editura Integral, atunci această carte s-ar fi putut chema: , ea fiind prima în care sunt adunate vocile tuturor membrilor formației etalon. Asta îi dă întâi de toate o valoare documentară.” spune Andrei Ujică. Phoenix. Portrait of Peruvian born Claudia. Second installment of an ongoing collaboration with Meryll Rogge celebrating Latin American beauty. The genesis of a collaboration between Meryll Rogge and Hans Neumann originated at the time they met back in New York in 2008 when both were still pursuing their careers and finding their own voices. For this second installment Neumann wanted to capture very straight forward portraits of the Latin America community in Paris as a homage to Thomas Ruff against minimal backgrounds mixed with stills of them captured in movement/medium of transport as an analogy to displacement that occurs within the Latin Community. Hans Neumann is a visual artist born in Peru. Based in New York and Europe since 2003. His first book 'Nuevo New York' published by Damiani in 2018, portrays artists and talent from Latin America that now have roots in New York. That same year, as a response to Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric he started a book project called 'Ensayo', that focuses on his study of the ideas of identity, home and community. There are 6 volumes to date and more to come. They joined forces with Esther Matilla for styling and Alejandra Perez for casting. Esther Matilla is a New York / Paris - based stylist, fashion consultant and creative director, originally from Spain. She is responsible for styling a vast portfolio of editorial and campaign work and elevating it to hold the same self-possessed charm.
