October 4th 1821 saw the death of John Rennie, the famous engineer who constructed the Crinan Canal.
Rennie is always overshadowed by Thomas Telford when it comes to our great civil engineers but Rennie was very much respected and his work on canals, aqueducts, bridges and dockyards mark him as one of the greatest engineers of his age.
John Rennie was born June 7, 1761 at East Linton, sometimes called “the Elder,” to distinguish him from his engineer son John junior, he designed canals from the 1790s onwards during the golden age of canal building Rennie made his initial mark with his aqueducts, which carried canals across rivers or other canals, structures I myself love, two I have been over many times carry the Union Canal, are over The Water of Leith in Edinburgh, and the River Avon near Linlithgow, although I digress as these were by another engineer, Hugh Baird.
After making a name for himself in Scotland London came calling and aged 29 he moved down there and set up his own engineering business in 1791, his biggest project being the original Waterloo Bridge, which was demolished between the wars in the 1930's after structural damage was discovered. One of John Rennie's last projects was the construction of the Custom House Docks in Dublin, which were completed in 1821.
Some of Rennie's works in Scotland, as seen in the pictures include, Kelso Bridge, pics one and two, Musselburgh Bridge, Ken Bridge, near New Galloway, and the aforementioned Crinan Canal in Argyll and Bute.

JULY 05, 2023 📚
MOTIVATION VS. WHAT IFS
4 months and 11 days before my board exam days.
I’m writing this blog today ‘cause I don’t know how to start my day. Its been a month since I started reviewing but I feel like there is no progress, and I don’t have enough time to study all my modules. Every week my modules or lessons that I need to learn are piled up. I’m afraid of losing this battle because since then I’m a fighter and never lose a battle in my life. I’m afraid to the people around me, what are they gonna say if I did not pass this board exam. They all know me as an achiever since elementary to college.
While reviewing this past 1 month I started doubting myself. I’m crying everynight thinking the ‘what ifs’. I need to win this because I need to help my family. I don’t want my parents suffer and they deserve better life. I don’t know if this blog is all about motivation or what ifs.
I really need to find my momentum in reviewing and how I manage my time everyday. Do you have any suggestions in studying in civil engineering board exam?

Michio Mado's Poetry-Similarity to Daojia(道家,especially Lao Tzu)

Mado Michio (amazon)
The poet Michio Mado(みちお・まど) died in February 2014 at the age of 104, but the famous "
After his death, I learned that he was working on impressive nursery rhyme original poems such as "Elephant" and "Mysterious Pocket". Most of his background is from the wiki
Mado Michio (real name: Michio Ishida <Michio Ishida>, 1909 <Meiji 42> November 16-2014 <2014> February 28) is a Japanese poet. He was recognized by Japanese famous poet: Hakushu Kitahara at the age of 25 and was convened at the age of 33. He started writing poetry in his twenties, and since then he has continued to write poetry. The source of his creativity is his dissatisfaction with politics, administration, education, economy, and war. The easy-going and humorous works such as "Elephant" and "Goat Yubin" are also popular as nursery rhymes.
Michio Mado was a civil engineer who graduated from an industrial high school. He's a scientific poet, isn't he? This type of poet seems to be able to write unique, non-trivial poems backed by an observing eye.
The following exchanges are comments and lessons exchanged with my friend narumasa_2929 on the blog.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@me: I liked "Yagi-san Yubin", but I had never heard that this poem was written by Michio Mado. I think his poetry was of a body that erased himself, erased it to give him anonymity, and even universality. I think this is a simple and deep poem by very Mr. mado. I can't imitate it very much.
@narumasa_2929:
Thank you for your comment!
> I think his poetry was of a body that erased himself, erased it to give him anonymity, and even universality.
I see, it has these characteristics.
If I read your comment, Hisashi Inoue's
"It's easy to do difficult things, it's easy to do, and it's fun to do it."
I remembered the word.
I also remembered the historical novels of Ryotaro Shiba and Kan Shimozawa. Depth that can be obtained because it is simple.
It doesn't seem to be a story of a dimension that can be managed with a little technique. I feel like a dimension related to "way of life."
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Now, let me comment on two poems by Mado.
"Yagi-san Yubin(Goat’s mail): ♪ I got a cling from Mr. Shiroyagi ...", the poem is one of Mado's famous works. Both Mr. Shiroyagi (a white goat) and Mr. Kuroyagi (black goat) can be laughed even though they have mistaken the means and purpose. They eat eachother’s letter eachother before reading a letter. The exchange of letters like this continues endlessly. What is unfolded in this poem is the discommunication (impossible of mutual communication) of "enemy who cannot understand each other forever". Once upon a time, when I was involved in the movement of voluntary lectures, I read a book of lecture records in the voluntary lectures, but there was an endless barren controversy between the person who greatly hindered the progress of the lectures and the steering committee members. As a record, I have read a book called "Record of Discussion". The intruder was a very selfish person. ….I think that such an event is also a good example of "Yagi-san Yubin".
☆Another Michio Mado‘s poetry:
@Cherry blossom petals
She's away from her
Fluttering
Cherry blossom petals
Groundly she arrived
Now she's done
And she started
One thing about her
Cherry takes her
No she is for the earth
Take the universe
Too obvious
One thing.
Mado is good at poetry with a view to space. In this poem, the impact on the entire universe at the moment when Cherry blossom petals falls to the ground is sung. Indeed, I can think of similarities with the Daojia idea of Chinese philosophy, especially "Lao Tzu". In Chapter 16 of "Lao Tzu", "No matter how prosperous all living things are, they will return to their roots. Returning to their roots is called silence, and it is said to obey fate. ... (Omitted) ... Being heaven is being a "road." The "road" is permanent. (Chuko Bunko: Tamaki Ogawa, translation) Almost the same idea. Even if you read Mado's essay, you can see this kind of similarity with Lao Tzu.
A word of the day: I think it's okay to be proud that Japan gave birth to Michio Mado. Even in the name "Michio", the basic concept "road" in the Daojia idea appears. What a coincidence, no inevitability. (Of course, even if the Daojia idea is the best, I'm not saying that Mr.Mado is amazing because it's similar.) The poetry collection I referred to this time is "Kuma-san" (fairy tale shop: 1989 first edition) ) . Furthermore, Mado means a window. Oh yeah, Michio Mado was a civil engineer and a science student before he became a poet.

October 4th saw the death of John Rennie, the famous engineer who constructed the Crinan Canal.
I think when we talk about our civil engineers Rennie sometimes gets overshadowed by the likes of Telford and the Stevensons, but Rennie’s work on canals, aqueducts, bridges and dockyards mark him as one of the greatest engineers of his age.
Rennie was born on 7th June 1761, the fourth son of a prosperous farmer on the Phantassie estate near the village of East Linton, 20 miles east of Edinburgh. He played truant from school to watch what went on at the local millwright’s workshop - run by the celebrated mechanic, Andrew Meikle, the inventor of the threshing machine - and began to work there when he was 12 years old, while continuing his education. He studied at Edinburgh University and then worked for Boulton and Watt, a firm based near Birmingham which manufactured steam engines.
In 1791, Rennie moved to London and set up his own engineering business. His first works were canals, notably the Lancaster Canal, the Kennet & Avon Canal, and the Royal Military Canal, and also improving the drainage of the Norfolk fens.
Meanwhile Rennie also acquired experience as a bridge designer, using stone and cast iron to produce bridges with daringly wide arches. These included the Lune Aqueduct , Kelso Bridge , Waterloo Bridge, Southwark Bridge and London Bridge, which was completed to Rennie’s design by his son George after his death.
Rennie also worked on the development of docks and harbours for commercial purposes, including Grimsby, Leith and the London Docks . His largest projects were the civil engineering works required as the Royal Navy began to build the infrastructure, including Sheerness Dockyard and the great breakwater at Plymouth . Rennie was also commissioned to give advice on other novel maritime structures, notably steam-powered dredgers, diving bells and the famous Bell Rock lighthouse.
Rennie died, aged 60, after a short illness, at his house in Stamford Street, London, on this day in 1821, and was buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Pics are of Rennie, The Crinan Canal at Crinan Village and Ken Bridge near New Galloway.
