you’re being dragged through the gate by your hand, and you’d be scared that your bones would come out of your socket by how fast you’re running if you didn’t know that jisung always kept your comfort and safety in the back of his mind. he’s almost giggling with excitement, the smile on his face all big and toothy as he stops at the ticket booth and holds up two fingers to the bored looking staff behind it.
jisung has been looking forward to coming to the carnival for days, he even did his research to see which day would be the least busy because he knows the both of you aren’t fond of crowds.
“i’m going to win you a giant stuffed animal.” he had declared when he brought up going, to which you responded that he can try, and he took that as a challenge that he would do his absolute best to win.
tickets secured, he starts to beeline his way towards the game booths with obnoxiously neon colored plushies hanging off of them, but you stop him with a gentle tug to his wrist.
“let’s go ride the ferris wheel first, sung. if you win me a giant plushie i don’t want to have to share a seat with it.” you say.
“if? you mean when.” he pouted, already changing trajectory to walk towards the rides instead.
“yeah, baby, sure,” you playfully roll your eyes as you match his strides. you reach the ferris wheel just as it’s letting off the last riders from the previous ride, and no one else is in line for the next. you approach the entrance, and the teenage staff member looks at you both tiredly.
“normally, i would tell you to wait for more people before getting on, but since there is no one in sight and i don’t actually care, hop on,” she says as she moves towards the console. you and jisung look at each other and shrug before getting into carriage at the bottom of the circle.
the ride was the most peaceful you’ve felt in weeks; you hold into jisung’s hand tight, his fear of heights not as bad as it used to be but still present. he leans his head against your shoulder and you close your eyes, feeling the wind run through your hair and tickle your eyelashes. sooner than you wanted, the ride is over and you and jisung are wandering around the carnival idly.
you go on a few more rides, insistent that you get your worth out of the ticket because no sung, we are not just here for you to try and win me a prize. jisung ends up with adorably fluffed wind-blown hair after riding the spinning teacups, and you’re left with teary eyes and a rough voice after screaming on the swinging pirate ship.
and of course you stop and take a break at the cheesecake vendor because neither you nor jisung can walk past cheesecake without at least tasting it. you take turns feeding each other bites of fluffy dessert and you narrowly avoid him trying to dab some on your nose with his finger. the two of you probably make a disgustingly sweet couple but in that moment you don’t particularly care.
when you finally reach the game booths, he looks like a kid in a candy store.
“pick one, i’ll win any of them,” he says confidently, and you look to see which game looks the hardest. you land on the ring toss, which has absurdly large rabbits hanging off of the canopy. when you walk closer, you see more reasonably sized squirrel plushies under the rabbits and you know you picked the right booth.
jisung makes a valiant effort, throwing the rings with his tongue adorably peeking out of his mouth. half of his rings latch onto the necks of the bottles and you cheer him on with each and every one. his smile gets bigger and bigger with each small victory, and by the end he’s smiling widely and looking expectantly at the booth owner.
the very booth owner who gives jisung a flat stare and instead of a giant rabbit hands him one of the small squirrel plushies. jisung’s smile falls as he looks down at the toy, and and he shakes his head.
“let me try again, i know i can do it!” he says, already reaching for his wallet. you stop him with a hand to his elbow, and you grab the plushie from the booth owner.
“no, this one’s perfect,” you say as you look into it’s embroidered eyes. “it reminds me of you!” you hold it up to his face, smiling at the resemblance. the smile he gives you in return is so fond that you have to look away, overwhelmed.
you don’t realize how tired you are from the day until you slip into the passenger seat of his car a few minutes later and your bones just melt into the soft leather.
“today was perfect, thank you.” you say sleepily as he pulls out of the parking spot.
“anytime, baby.” he says, tangling his fingers with yours as you drift off, cuddling the stuffed squirrel to your chest.
