⚙ *:・゚✧ // She went from sketching possible road layouts to testing a few specialty weapons on the range. Honestly it was the most cathartic way to end her day; to let off some steam along with a few rounds. Perhaps it was not the most ideal attire, however, foregoing pristine white blazer to the black halter underneath, her own personal warning coloration signaling others to proceed with caution, but deadlines do not come with a wardrobe change.
It's on her last few rounds when out of the corner of her eye she sees him and her heart skips a beat, something she inwardly chastises herself for. Cindy Sophia has never thought of herself to be carrying a torch for someone and yet, here she is. Here they are. But she's working and he’s naturally busy, possibly going to or coming from a meeting. She shouldn't place too much stock in things that happen behind doors when they're out in even a somewhat public setting.
She nearly misses it as she's reloading, mind so lost in overthinking that the feeling almost slips away from her; the brush to the small of her back, fingertips sweeping, curving as if tracing the lines of a crescent moon and the horizon it's dipping behind. Three seconds feel like a litetime.
Sharp inhale and her stature stiffens yet not in the way of aversion, absolutely nothing to the tune of it. It was more like a touch of surprise that melts to a deeper yearning coiling at the pit of her stomach. The spark of it twists up her spine and webs out across her back pricking the faintest goosebumps about her shoulders. She feels it long after he's left, like the brush of his fingers are seared along her skin and now all she desires is to feel the heat of them once more, however brief or prolonged.

In Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, you can clear the land yourself and enjoy a cozy life simulation with more freedom than ever before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
■ Starting Your Farm from Scratch
Clear the Land
Start your farm from scratch by clearing through a vast forest. Cut down trees, break rocks, and mow weeds… This work requires patience, but various discoveries and encounters await those who pioneer the land.
Various Encounters Await
—Obtain and grow new crops.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Encounter animals that you can raise on your farm and even ride.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Take photographs of wild animals and insects for the town museum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Discover fishing spots to catch big fish and unusual aquatic products.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Biggest Farm in the Series Yet
At the start of the game, the farm consists only of a small plot of land covered in trees, a broken hut, and a tent for you to live in. However, by clearing the forest and gathering resources, you can repair and build new facilities to gradually expand the land and what you can do with it.
—By mending broken bridges or collapsed valleys, you will be able to go to new lands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—By fixing up the deserted house you discover, you can turn it into an animal shed where you can raise your livestock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Layout the land you clear as you like! Use tools to freely develop your farm, from the positioning of the animal shed to the scope of the field, various patterned roads and fences, sprinklers, and more. Whether your farm is huge, large, or has a slightly unusual use of space, this vast land is yours to create as you please!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
■ Full-Fledged Farm Management
The farm management of previous Story of Seasons games has been even further enhanced in Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town.
Livestock and Farming
Plow the land, sow the seeds, and keep them watered to grow all sorts of crops. By shipping out harvested crops for money, you can gradually develop your farm to become even bigger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By taking care of your livestock, your can obtain animal by-products, then either ship those out or go to the extra effort of processing to sell it for an even higher price.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By using the various ingredients obtained through livestock and farming, you can cook various cuisines. While you can ship out and sell the cuisines you cook, you can also eat them yourself to restore stamina, allowing you to carry out your farm work even longer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The money obtained through farm management can be used to upgrade tools such as your axe, hoe, and watering can, which will only make farm life easier such as by increasing the amount of land that can be plowed at once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there are various other fun things to look forward to, including beekeeping, mushroom growing, fruit growing, and more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coropon
Coropon are spirits you encounter as you live your life on the farm. By befriending the Coropon, they will give you crops and materials produced in their village. While there are not many Coropon at first, you will discover many as you pioneer the land. In the process of clearing the land and befriending them, they may even take you to a “special place”…

Housing Projects
The design of housing projects has since evolved from being a high-rise block crammed with basic, modular units. In the examples below, Creative Haus has each explored examples of innovative, common design themes that has been explored over the years.
COURTYARD
A well designed Courtyard is critical to a healthy lifestyle for any building that is larger than single occupancy. A courtyard is an outdoor, enclosed, secure space that is also naturally lit and filled with plants. Such a room helps to blend the edges between the indoors and outdoors, and assist in the relaxation process.
Having a courtyard is necessary for human mental health when living in high density areas.  In order for humans to maintain a healthy balance the body must be exposed to the sky and sun on a semi regular basis. When a yard is not available due to restricted land use, a courtyard provides a safe and private room in the house for residents to visually access the benefits of the sun, moon and stars.
Tumblr media
Many aspects of human health depend on exposure to sunlight. Depression as well as several skin conditions have been linked to a lack of sun exposure and too much time spent in doors. Therefore, when other forms of outdoor activities are restricted, a courtyard is a must have to maintain the physical and mental health of a resident.
In some cases even if a yard is available sometimes, a courtyard is preferred instead. The primary advantage to a court yard over a regular yard is privacy; a yard is exposed to the view of nosy neighbors while a courtyard is used for private enjoyment. In addition to privacy, a courtyard is much safer than a yard. Yards leave children exposed to the view of shifty neighbors or encounters with wild critters at any time. In opposition, a courtyard serves as an outdoor room to keep belongings such as grills and yard furniture while providing a safe and comfortable place for children to play.
Tumblr media
In high-density, low-income-housing courtyards create comfortable spaces. When an individual is restricted to a lifestyle of hard work and tight living, a safe outdoor space helps with relaxation, fresh air, and overall quality of life.

MODULARITY
Tumblr media
Exterior rendering of Hope On Alvarado
Modular architecture consists of a designed system of individual components that can be connected to create different layouts, with the ability to remove or add any number of units without effecting the overall system.
vimeo
Hope On Alvarado is a project by KTGY Architecture + Planning, in which the modular design of single housing units is being taken advantage of to build an affordable housing complex. The driving force behind this project is the increasing homeless population of LA. KTGY Architecture took this in mind and designed something that could be easily constructed, cost effective, and affordable. Parking for this site was built below grade, allowing for pedestrian interaction and mix use units on the ground level, and providing a central, community oriented, courtyard. While most of the initial construction work is done on site, the housing units are built off-site, allowing for a faster overall construction time. The units themselves are studio and single bedroom apartments, with customizable interiors. Hope On Alvarado is the first of a serious of housing projects being constructed in LA, the others being Hope On Broadway and Hope On Hyde Park.

1000m2 Prefabricated Housing is a SUMMARY project that is located in Vale de Cambra, Portugal. SUMMARY’s concept was to create modular, pre-fabricated building systems that was fast, cost effective, and changeable over time.
The ground floor level is reserved for multi-purpose programs and connected with the public place, while the upper levels are 6 individual housing units (45m2 each). Due to the pre-fabrication nature and maximum building area in Portugal, the units were able to be placed at various positions to allow separation between units, which in turn creates individual access entries.
Tumblr media
Separation of units allow for individual entries for each unit
The whole building is made up of exposed pre-casted concrete walls, allowing parts to be undefined. This allows flexibility and resource optimization as main themes. In addition, the un-finished material reduces resources and energy applied during the construction process, evidently reducing its environmental impact. This also allows the construction process to be easily assembled in the factory, and then moved to the site.
Tumblr media
Pre-casted concrete walls allows for flexible, open interior spaces that is divided by bright yellow colored walls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flexibility is also exemplified in the ground level, where the above plans are two possible options that the open space can be organized by partitions.

GREEN ECOLOGY
Tumblr media
Our last example is housing project, 25 VERDE, located in Turin, Italy. Designed by Luciano Pia and built in 2012, the building has been thought of as a living forest. It is a unique building because it is alive: it grows up, breathes and changes with 150 trees covering its terraces.
The housing, similar to biophilic Singaporean architecture, is covered with green everywhere, whether in big vases on the terraces, court gardens, green walls, or roof gardens.
The project consists of 63 units spanning over 7 floors all in different and fitted shapes with wide, irregular terraces to surround the trees. The highest floor is programmed as private green roofs.
Tumblr media
In the courtyard garden, there are 50 trees planted that contributes to the climate by producing oxygen, absorbing carbonic anhydride, cutting down air pollution, and protecting from noise. The trees also follow the cycle of the seasons, growing each day and creating a perfect microclimate inside the building that diminishes the low and high temperatures of summer and wintertime. The steeps in solid wood that floor the terraces filter the sunlight in summer, while in winter they let the light break into the house.
Tumblr media
The metal supports look like trees and eventually become entwined with the vegetation to create a unique, growing façade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the aims of the project is the increase of the energetic efficiency and for this reason several integrated solutions have been adopted: continuous insulation, sun protection, heating and cooling systems which make use of the geothermal energy with heat pumps and recycling of the falling rain to water the green.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Section and plan showing how the housing units are integrated within the housing “forest”, being separated in the middle by court gardens.

tragic  beauty: gia carangi - an analysis
“You know what I think? I think there’s a reason for everything. And I think that there’s a plan for everyone. And I think that God has a big plan for me. Just not in this life.” - Gia Carangi
This is my baby right here. I’ve been captivated by Gia Carangi ever since I saw Gia, in which Angelina Jolie brilliantly played the doomed beauty. In more than a few ways, she reminds me of Marilyn Monroe because she was born to be in front of the camera. She projected like a cheetah. She would pose in ways that dictated that knew how to move and she knew her face, she knew her body.  And it seemed like it was no big deal to her — as if she was only doing modeling because she needed something to do. I think the roots of her self-destruction lay in her being totally untrusting; she seemed used to being abused because she was so beautiful. And she became very hardened to that. She realized it young and tried to protect herself. She was widely considered the first “supermodel”. Cindy Crawford, who also appeared on the covers of several fashion publications during Gia’s time, was later referred to as “Baby Gia”, due to her resemblance to Carangi. The reasons for her rise were complex: her softly androgynous look as well as her unimpressed attitude and disdain for the beauty world made her all the more tantalizing in the business, just as her inaccessibility to men was a key to her appeal as a model. She was also the first to present unusual poses, facial expressions and gestures. She is credited by many at the upper echelons of fashion to have created a new style of modeling, emulated by models since then to the present. Carangi was featured on the cover of many fashion magazines, including Vogue, and several issues of Cosmopolitan between 1979 and 1982. Her run was brief, but it was blazing.
Tumblr media
Gia Carangi, according to astrotheme, was a was a Aquarius sun and Pisces moon. She never connected totally with anyone in her life, except through her Dior and Armani ads and her layouts in Cosmopolitan and Vogue. The bisexual supermodel, known for her self-destructive behavior and early demise, was essentially just a hurt, wounded little girl begging for her mother’s acceptance. From the beginning, on all accounts, Gia, was, in every way, her mother’s child. She was described as “needy and manipulative” by relatives who recalled her as spoiled and shy as a child and a “mommy’s girl” who did not receive the motherly attention that she desired. Gia was a quiet, bright child whose mannerisms were so adorable that she was encouraged to speak in baby talk long after it was appropriate. She was precocious and quietly rebellious, and if she had a truly close bond with anyone in the family it was with her mother, with whom she could share “girl things.” Although dysfunctional has become a cliche in describing problem families, it seems to fit Gia’s upbringing perfectly. Kathleen Carangi, Gia’s mother, walked out on her older, abusive husband when Gia was 11, leaving her daughter and two sons with their father. His way of dealing with his children was to ignore them, preferring to give them things rather than attention, or to be the strict disciplinarian. Gia learned to use her parents against each other, moving from one to the other`s house after her mother’s remarriage. On a side note, her mother’s overbearing nature just made me think she had to have been either a Cancer or a Scorpio, like my mum, so I had to look her up. She was actually a Sagittarius, surprisingly.
When her mother initially deserted the family, Gia was devastated, and the fact that she never could seem to please her mother was a recurring theme throughout her life. Her sexual orientation was distasteful to Gia’s mother, and many of Gia’s friends say she began modeling in an effort to get her mother to accept her homosexuality.  Although she would never bring herself to admit it to anyone until in her teens, Gia’s childhood was strongly influenced by an event that took place when she was five: She was sexually abused by an older man. The abuse occurred once, but she was traumatized by the incident and lived in fear that it would happen again. At age 14, she would tell her mother that a neighborhood man was the offender. Later, she would tell several friends that her father had been her abuser. At the height of her career, she was making $100,000 a year; but she often spent $2,000 to $3,000 a day in drugs, usually bought at the low-life shooting galleries in New York City. After becoming addicted to drugs, Carangi’s modeling career rapidly declined. She later became infected with HIV and had to be hospitalized. At this point, her mother completely took over her life, deciding who should be allowed to see her and what treatments she should receive. Kathleen also decided that no one except close family was to be told that Gia had AIDS. Shortly after admittance, she died in 1986, indigent, and on medical assistance. Carangi is thought to be one of the first famous women to die of AIDS. Her death was not widely publicized and few people in the fashion industry knew of it. Her mother sums up her last hours:
“At the end, she was spared nothing, absolutely nothing. Every organ in that girl’s body failed. She was put on a respirator for a month. We had initially said no to the respirator but the way they explained it to her they said she’d only be on it for a few days. So they brought the paper and I said, ‘Gia, just sign it,’ and she said, ‘Thank you very much for making my decision for me.’ She had to make such a big deal out of everything…reading it whether she understands it or not. I just said, ‘Sign it.’ I was a nervous wreck. A doctor said, "What do you think you’ve saved her for?’ Maybe I was wrong, maybe I should have let her go. But then they decided that she wanted to die. She didn’t want to die. She just wanted to get off the respirator. She thought that if she did, then she could go home. She wanted to go to Disneyland. She just wanted out.”
Next week, I’ll focus on an amazing Sagittarius diva, another lady who conjured up success from pain, the divine Édith Piaf.

Overall personality snapshot: Was she the observant, sensible, scientific type who was strangely attracted to weird phenomena? Was she open, easy-going, and friendly, available and helpful to all, but quaking inside because she feared that her soft, vulnerable little voice would not be heard? She was an enigma, as much to herself as to others at times. At one level she was perky and independent, and at another she was a dreamy sentimentalist, happy to blend in with her surroundings. She appeared to have a confident mental grasp on life and knew exactly where she was, but inside she often struggled with self-doubt. She was genuinely gregarious and intelligently concerned about people and about a mixture – perhaps an odd one – of social causes and metaphysical ideas. Her friendliness hid a sensitive and precarious inner core, however, which few people ever really got to know. She was one of the most sociable people in the zodiac – sympathetic, helpful, enjoying the fellowship of a wide range of people and eager to learn. Her inclination was to reach out to people – she wanted to be involved in a way that made a difference, and she was deeply nourished and her ego was boosted when her efforts elicited a positive emotional response. She strove to be an independent thinker and generally liked to do her own thing. She would make a stand for the things she believed in, but she secretly hoped she’d not have to do it alone.
Whether it was in science, in her profession in the arts or metaphysics, the challenge of new frontiers attracted her, and it would be due as much to the romance of the role she might have played as to the soundness of the principle at stake. Her insights could be very creative and fertile because she backed up her thinking with real feeling – she cared deeply about both the ideas and the people in her life. Her broad, almost visionary viewpoint and her disarming sympathy for other people made her a touch eccentric but popular, too. If her Aquarian side was dominant, she may have had a view of scientists as an international brotherhood striving to uncover the truth for the benefit of humankind. If her Piscean side is stronger (which it must have been for her to have self destructed by drugs), she may have felt that circuses and seances were as essential to a healthy life as three meals a day and eight hours of sleep. She wanted to be of service to the world, to be connected in a meaningful way. No matter how busy she was she would have made time for whatever philanthropic pursuit grabbed her imagination. People knew she was honourable, and if she ever chastised someone she did it with gentle humour – she knew she has been there herself. Her compassion for and understanding of human nature made her well suited for work with people, if not as an actress, then either in education, the ministry or the caring/medical professions. She treated people as equals, and with great respect. She would have made a wonderful teacher because she was able to bring out the inner resources in others which they didn’t even realize they possessed.
She was extremely attractive and had a warm and charming nature. Her features were refined, her bones delicate and her skin fair. Her movements were very graceful. She needed to strike the balance between her heart and her mind, between intuition and logic. She thought in an intuitive, inventive and original way. She was an intelligent, bold thinker who was attracted to new and avant-garde ideas. Her mental application might have been slightly erratic, but it was often brilliant. She detested being pigeonholed or categorized. She hated being told what to think, as intellectual independence was vitally important to her. Being very well-read, she knew a little about a great many things. She had an excellent memory, and career issues brought out and exposed her feelings and emotions. In fact, bosses and other authoritarian figures were the often the target for any unresolved problems with her mother or parents in general. Worldly success was well within her reach, because she possessed all the necessary talents to gain power, influence and status. When there were hitches in her plans, she simply worked around them. Although she could be fairly pessimistic about life in general, it didn’t put her off aiming for the top. Her romantic life may be held back, unless you let more of your emotions slip past the barriers of self-protection which you erect to stop yourself from ever getting hurt. It would have been good if she were to unbend a little and allow herself to be affected emotionally by events and people. Otherwise, her personal relationships suffered greatly. Her self-discipline and strong natural sense of responsibility helped to bring her success at an early age. The roots of your self-discipline and sense of responsibility (or lack thereof) was likely found in the way she was brought up by her parents.
She loved her freedom and defied anyone to try and stop her. She had a very optimistic and philosophical outlook on life that supported her large-scale ambitions and visions. She could be a little reckless and boastful, with a casual attitude to her resources. She liked to be able to expand her mind to the full through education and experience. Her life included a lengthy stays overseas (mainly for modelling assignments). She was not averse to taking risks. She demanded to be heard if she had something to say. She rebelled against authority, especially if it is poorly administered and wants the freedom to fulfilled their destiny as she saw it. She was strong-willed, bold, enterprising, creative, but also rather unreliable in emotional matters and hard to pin down to obligations and responsibilities. As a part of the Leo Uranus generation, she wanted strong charismatic leaders to whom she could pledge her complete support (which she found in David Bowie, among others).  She was part of a generation that never seemed to be able to find complete satisfaction. As a part of this generation, she had a strong imaginative energy source, coupled with a very strong personal morality. She expressed an emotional intensity in her beliefs. Fashion, for her, became an arena for confrontation. As a member of the Virgoan Pluto generation, she was inquisitive, assertive and zealous. The little details mattered to her, She belonged to a generation that wanted to save the world, but often got bogged down in the details and lost sight of the big picture. However, constant self-analysis, second-guessing and nitpicking often held her back from creating permanent changes.
Love/sex life: She was the earthiest lover of this very earthy type. Sex was an elemental force in her life; so visceral, so primitive that at times it overwhelmed her. Of course, very few people knew this because she was such a conservative lover and was so good at concealing her true feelings. This sexual reserve and distaste for display made it difficult for her to find a partner who equaled her sexual intensity but, when she, he or she is was in for a very pleasant surprise. Her concern for the physical aspects of sex and practical attention to issues like duty and loyalty within a relationship often made her seem insensitive to the emotional side of love. She understood that feelings were an important part of the equation; she just didn’t always remember where she left hers. She was a very steady lover who could be counted on to support her lover in any time of crisis. But if the crisis involved tears or throwing dishes she’d most likely be providing that support from a safe distance.
minor asteroids and points:
North Node: Virgo
Lilith: Cancer
Vertex: Aries
Fortune: Virgo
East Point: Libra
Her North Node in Virgo dictated that her tendency to dream and be disorganized needed to be tempered by developing more practical and down-to-earth attitudes. Her Lilith in Cancer ensured that she was too sensitive and resorted to nasty emotional manipulation, games, and pulled all sorts of shit to reclaim the power she felt she lost. In this case, it was escape through drugs. Her Vertex in Aries, 7th house dictated that she reflected the needs and desires that she secretly yearned to have satisfied in a relationship with another. There was a deep desire for raw, unbridled passion. The internal drama which she experienced involved an obsessive lust for true adventure and excitement, exploring new territories in a hell-bent and determined way to get what she was driven toward, no matter what the consequences to others in her life. There was an extreme repulsion for routine of any sort when it comes to intimacy. She was a true pioneer as far as sexuality goes - there is always something greener as the phrase goes. She was always in a partnership of one kind or another (if only in her head), desperately seeking one, or have decided that it wasn’t worth the risk since her expectations would never be met. There’s a sense that she wasn’t really complete unless she was intimately involved with someone. On some levels there was an irrational fear of ending up alone. The dark side was that she could get highly self-righteous about acceptable modes of behaviour in interacting with others and thereby alienated the very people she longed for.
Her parental role model was less than secure in her subconscious perceptions, though it may have seemed fine on an external level. Her Part of Fortune in Virgo and Part of Spirit in Pisces dictated that her destiny lay in cultivating discrimination, logical analysis and tolerance to clear away issues from the past. Happiness and success came to her when she was able to bring order out of chaos. Her soul’s purpose asked her to develop compassion and faith. She was able to transcend limits. She felt spiritual connections and the spark of the divine when she was able to concentrate on higher ideals and helping others. Her intuition always guided her. East Point in Libra dictated that she was more identified with the need for a one-to-one relationship with another. Equality, harmony, justice, fair play and a sense of even-handedness were likely to be basic parts of her identity.  She chose to relate in a cooperative way (and the extreme to be avoided is playing doormat, appeasing the other person). She also selected (consciously or unconsciously) competitive relationships and engaged in a series of game-playing (literally and figuratively) associations.
elemental dominance:
earth
air
She was a practical, reliable woman and could provide structure and protection. She was oriented toward practical experience and thought in terms doing rather than thinking, feeling, or imagining. Could be materialistic, unimaginative, and resistant to change. But at her best, she provided the practical resources, analysis, and leadership to make dreams come true. She was communicative, quick and mentally agile, and she liked to stir things up. She was likely a havoc-seeker on some level. She was oriented more toward thinking than feeling. She carried information and the seeds of ideas. Out of balance, she lived in her head and could be insensitive to the feelings of others. But at her best, she helped others form connections in all spheres of their daily lives.
modality dominance:
cardinal
She was happiest when she was doing anything new, and she loved to begin new ventures. She enjoyed the challenge of claiming territory. She tended to be an initiator—and a bit territorial as well. Also, she had a tendency to start more things than she could possibly finish.
house dominants:
4th
3rd
5th
The domestic arena and the home were also emphasized. By extension, the influence of the family she was born into, and the parents that raised her, in particular her father, as well as her personal and private life was of paramount importance to her. Short journeys, traveling within her own country were themes throughout her life; her immediate environment, and relationships with her siblings, neighbours and friends were of importance. The way her mental processes operated, as well as the manner and style in which she communicated was emphasized in her life. As such, much was revealed about her schooling and childhood and adolescence. Her life had an emphasis on creativity and self-expression. This included new beginnings; in fact, it included any way in which her creativity manifested itself. It showed how she was special and stood out. Also indicated an emphasis on leisure activities and holidays, gambling and speculation, romance and courtship, entertainment, sport, and sex.

She believed in the fact that lessons in life are sometimes harsh, that structure and foundation was a great issue in her life, and she had to be taught through through experience what she needed in order to grow. She paid attention to limitations she had and had to learn the rules of the game in this physical reality. She tended to have a practical, prudent outlook. She also likely held rigid beliefs. She believed and practiced dynamic expression. She was aggressive, individualistic and had a high sexual drive. She believed in action and took action. Her survival instinct was strong. She wanted to take herself to the limit—and then surpass that limit, which she often did. She ultimately refused to compromise her integrity by following another’s agenda. She likely didn’t compare herself to other people and didn’t want to dominate or be dominated. She simply wanted to be free to follow her own path, whatever it was. She was romantic, attractive and valued beauty, had an artistic instinct, and was sociable. She had an easy ability to create close personal relationships, for better or worse, and to form business partnerships.

She was a serious-minded person who often seemed aloof and tightly in control of her emotions and her personal domain. Even as a youngster, there was a mature air about her, as if she was born with a profound core that few outsiders ever see. She was easily impressed by outward signs of success, but was interested less in money than in the power that money represents. She was a true worker—industrious, efficient, and disciplined. Her innate common sense gave her the ability to plan ahead and to work out practical ways of approaching goals. More often than not, she succeeded at whatever she set out to do. She possessed a quiet dignity that was unmistakable. She was an original thinker, often eccentric, who prized individuality and freedom above all else. Her compassion, while genuine, rose from the intellect rather than the heart. She was hard to figure out because she was so often a paradox. She was patient but impatient; a nonconformist who conformed when it suited her; rebellious but peace-loving; stubborn and yet compliant when she wanted to be. She chafed at the restrictions placed upon her by society and sought to follow her own path. She loved beauty in all its guises—art, literature, classical music, opera, mathematics, and the human body. She usually was a team player who enjoyed debate but not argument. As a Libra dominant, she was, at her best, an excellent strategist and a master at the power of suggestion. Even though she was likely a courteous, amiable person, she was definitely not a pushover. She tried to use diplomacy and intelligence to get what she wanted. She sought the truth, expressed it as she saw it—and didn’t care if anyone else agreed with her.
Read more about her under the cut.
Gia Marie Carangi was born January 1960, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the third and youngest child of Joseph Carangi, a restaurant owner, and Kathleen Carangi (née Adams), a homemaker. She had two older brothers. Her father was Italian, and her mother was of Irish and Welsh ancestry. Her parents fought frequently, and she was given little attention. By the time Gia was nine or ten, the tension in the Carangi household had escalated from verbal abuse to violence. While none of the children was ever hit, the parents began to tangle on a fairly regular basis. Kathleen’s mother told her just to learn to keep her mouth shut. A cousin of Gia’s says that Joe had a bad temper only if provoked and that "Kathleen always provoked him — sometimes she wanted it to get physical.” And after a while, it did get physical with alarming regularity. Kathleen believed at the time that the root of their problems was her husband’s “insane jealousy.” One time, she recalls, “He smacked me in the face during sex and accused me of thinking of somebody else.” Finally, when Gia was 11 years old, Kathleen decided that her marriage had reached the point where “he was going to kill me or I was going to kill him.” She decided to take the unusual step of leaving her husband, her home and her children, who stayed with their father.
Kathleen ended up marrying later — an accountant named Henry Sperr, who had been in Kathleen’s Lincoln High graduating class. Although she was happy to be in a new, healthier relationship, Kathleen Sperr was caught in a desperate struggle to find a comfortable and logical place in her children’s illogical lives —especially since she had by no means given up her need to control her progeny just because they no longer lived with her. For a while after the separation, she was not allowed to return to her home to see the children. Later, she saw them regularly, and eventually Gia would decide to move in with her mother and stepfather. But the damage was done, and it would be years before she fully comprehended the profound impact her departure had on her children. “Gia was the youngest, it affected her the worst,” her brother recalls. Gia’s reaction may have had as much to do with being left alone with her father as it did with the loss of her mother. “Gia told me later that after I left he would come into her room in the middle of the night and sit on her bed,” Kathleen recalls. “She’d wake up and he’d be there staring at her. Nothing ever happened, but she was uncomfortable.”
In her teens, Carangi became obsessed with rock stars, David Bowie in particular. Kathleen and Henry Sperr were convinced that David Bowie was at the root of Gia’s rebellion and sexual confusion. “She got involved with rock concerts,” Henry Sperr explains, “and a bunch of people who went to rock concerts. She got a Bowie haircut and that changed her personality completely. She seemed like a sweet young little kid before, and then afterward…” Afterward Gia emerged as a rebellious young woman who seemed as alienated from the Sperrs as David Bowie himself might have been. Like so many teenagers of her generation, Gia’s attitude toward life, and especially toward her family, was reflected in the music of her favorite pop idols-the androgynous Bowie and the rebellious Rolling Stones. Because she was convinced it was Bowie changing Gia, Kathleen decided to try to understand Bowie herself by attending his concerts with her daughter. “The mother would come to concerts,“ a friend of Gia’s recalls. "It was so ridiculous. Gia would be high and the mother would be there thinking she was protecting her daughter. If her mother had been a little more accepting of her then, maybe Gia wouldn’t have had to rebel so far.” Over the next few years, Gia pushed adolescent rebellion about as far as it would go. Her mother and stepfather were livid, but Gia considered their reactions so wildly inappropriate — they had never reached the point of accepting that Gia was simply different from her mother’s image of her —that she continued pushing them. And it was nearly impossible for any of her parents to really discipline her, because she would shuttle back and forth between her father’s house and the Sperr household, depending upon where she was in the least amount of trouble.
There was perhaps only one facet of Gia Carangi’s life with which she seemed comfortable: her homosexuality. “She was the purest lesbian I ever met,” recalls another friend. “It was the clearest thing about her. And she was very aggressive about it — she was sending other girls flowers and poems when she was 14 years old.” It was with this attitude that Kathleen dragged Gia to a counselor for the better part of a year. The therapy was finally discontinued when all concerned realized that Gia was making up stories to tell the counselor. This kind of sexual ambiguity would confound Gia throughout her life. “Gia just loved women and she fell for them whether they were straight or gay,” says one high school friend. “And the problem was that everyone fell in love with her, whether they were straight or not, male or female. She went after people and she always got them.” A bigger problem was that, even as a teenager, Gia dated a lot but was basically looking for love, not flings, and she never quite understood how disorienting it might be for a straight woman to be attracted to — or even have an affair with — another woman. “Gia was prone to needing someone around all the time,” says another of her lovers. “Sometimes it was almost like she needed a baby sitter.” “I think she mistook caring as sexual,” says one of the many straight women with whom Gia fell in unrequited love. “She needed people so badly that she pushed them away by putting expectations on them they couldn’t possibly fulfill.”
It was into this thermonuclear family situation that Gia Carangi’s fledgling modeling career was introduced. It began innocently enough with an audition at Gimbels department store. "We had always used regular models and then somebody decided we should try $10-an-hour models and just have a cattle call,” recalls photographer Michael Ahearn, former director of fashion photography at Gimbels. “Most of the people were just so awful and then along comes this little girl — she must’ve been 14 — and she was wonderful. She was always late, always had some excuse. But I used her as much as I could.” Many of her friends believe that the biggest reason Gia gravitated toward modeling was that she thought it would satisfy her mother on a number of levels: It was a professional "direction”; it was the kind of “girl thing” the two had always shared; and it was a vicarious fantasy for her mother. What got her to New York was two accidents: one involving the car her father had given her for her 16th birthday, the other involving Maurice Tannenbaum’s “book,” which was almost entirely composed of Gia shots. Tannenbaum’s work was seen by a friend who had good contacts at the New York modeling agency run by former supermodel Wilhelmina Cooper; the woman offered to set up a meeting for the would-be photographer and the would-be model with Wilhelmina herself. The car accident netted Gia a $2,000 insurance settlement, which helped finance her move to New York (the rest of the money was put up by her stepfather). The powerful Wilhelmina “went absolutely crazy over Gia,” Tannenbaum recalls. “She was trying to contain herself. She was so in awe that she forgot to give Gia the contract, and she ended up running down the hall after us to give it to her. Gia wasn’t 5’8” and she wasn’t quite 18, either, but Willy lied so she could get some test shootings.“
Carangi, became known in modeling circles just by her first name, and quickly rose to prominence. She was the favorite model of many eminent fashion photographers, including Francesco Scavullo, Arthur Elgort, Richard Avedon, and Chris von Wangenheim, and she posed for photos in many countries. By the end of 1978, Carangi was already a well-established model. Carangi did modeling for these designer and cosmetic firms: Body Basics, Christian Dior, Cutex, Diane von Fürstenberg, Giorgio Armani, Lancetti, Levi’s, Maybelline, Perry Ellis, Versace, Vidal Sassoon and Yves Saint Laurent. Carangi was a regular at Studio 54 and the Mudd Club. Carangi usually only used cocaine in clubs but later began to develop a heroin addiction. In October 1978, Carangi did her first major shoot with top fashion photographer Chris von Wangenheim. Wangenheim had her pose nude behind a chain-link fence with makeup assistant Sandy Linter. Carangi immediately became infatuated with Linter and started to pursue her, though the relationship never became stable., Carangi’s agent, Wilhelmina Cooper, died of lung cancer. Devastated, Carangi started abusing drugs. Scavullo recalled a fashion shoot in the Caribbean when "She was crying, she couldn’t find her drugs. I literally had to lay her down on her bed until she fell asleep.” Gia’s mother, who pretty much ignored Gia as a child, became a virtual groupie when Gia became a top model, driving to New York City just to do Gia`s laundry if she requested it. Kathleen was fascinated by the glamorous industry, eager for the inside gossip; she lived vicariously through Gia. That is why it`s hard to believe that Sperr could be so blind to Gia’ s obvious out-of-control drug use. Gia began using drugs as a teen-ager, graduating to harder drugs as her salary grew. Her trips, food and clothes were provided free of charge. She spent her own money on gifts, a fancy car and lots of drugs. One photo session was stopped because blood was running down Gia’s arm – she had injected herself during the shoot. During a Vogue layout, Gia’s needle marks were visible even after airbrushing. She once became so bored waiting for temperamental photographer Richard Avedon to begin a session that she climbed out the window in the clothes she was to model.
By 1980, Carangi began having violent temper tantrums, walking out of photo shoots, and even falling asleep in front of the camera. In the November 1980 issue of Vogue, Carangi’s track marks from heroin can be easily seen. For three weeks, she was signed with Eileen Ford, who soon dropped her. In 1981, Carangi enrolled in a 21-day detox program, and started dating a college student, Elyssa Golden. The Carangi family, along with her mother, had suspected that Golden had a drug problem. Carangi soon began using again. She moved out of her mother’s house and in with some friends, once again entering a detox program. Her attempt to quit drugs was shattered when news that good friend and fashion photographer Chris von Wangenheim had died in a car accident. It is said that Carangi locked herself in a bathroom for hours, shooting heroin. In the fall of 1981, she looked far different from the top model she once had been. However, she was still determined to make a comeback in the fashion industry. She contacted Monique Pillard (who was largely responsible for Janice Dickinson’s career), who was hesitant to sign her. For her second time, Carangi received the harsh treatment she skipped last time. Nobody would book her. Desperate, she turned to Scavullo. She landed a Cosmopolitan cover, a gift from Scavullo. Shot in the winter of 1982, it would be her last cover. In West Germany, a budding fashion industry was being created. Although seen as tacky by the designers from New York, Paris and Milan, the Germans were willing to pay 10,000 marks a week to shoot Carangi abroad. However, no one in the States would book her. In the spring of 1983, she was caught with drugs in a shoot in Africa. Her career was over. After pressure from her family she entered a drug-rehabilitation program again at Eagleville Hospital. After six months, she was released from the program and moved back to Philadelphia, where she seemed to be getting her life back on track. She started taking classes in photography and cinematography. But, three months later, she had vanished once again, and had returned to Atlantic City, and started shooting heroin again. She slept with men for money and was raped on several occasions. She soon became sick with pneumonia, and her mother came and checked her into a hospital in Norristown, Pennyslvania. Carangi was diagnosed with AIDS, then a newly recognized disease. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to Philadelphia’s Hahnemann University Hospital. Her mother stayed with her day and night, allowing virtually no visitors. On November 18, 1986 at 10 a.m., 26-year-old Gia Carangi died. Her funeral was held on November 21 at a small funeral home in Philadelphia. Nobody from the fashion world attended. However, weeks later, Scavullo sent a Mass card when he heard the news. A biography of Carangi by Stephen Fried called Thing of Beauty was published in 1993. A biographical film, Gia, debuted on HBO in 1998. Angelina Jolie starred in the title role. In 1996, actress-screenwriter Zoë Tamerlis, herself a heroin addict who died of drug-related causes in 1999, was commissioned to write a screenplay based upon Carangi’s life. This version of Gia was not produced, but after Tamerlis’ death, footage of her, photographers, Carangi’s family, and Sandy Linter discussing her life was incorporated into a documentary entitled The Self-Destruction of Gia.
