Movies watched in 2023
Ballerina (2023, South Korea)
Director & Writer: Lee Chung Hyun
Mini-review:
I'm a huge fan of Jeon Jong Seo and I enjoyed The Call very much, so I was really looking forward to Ballerina, her second collaboration with director Lee Chung Hyun. Thankfully, it didn't disappoint. It's sleek and visually stunning, and Jeon Jong Seo more than rises up to the challenge. She definitely has what it takes to be an action movie star. Tbh, the script and the story are much weaker and unoriginal than in The Call, but Lee Chung Hyun clearly knows how to direct the hell out of an action scene. Also, the movie is pretty short, so it goes straight to the point and it never gets boring. Anyway, I hope these two keep collaborating, cause so far they've been on fire together.
P.S. There's quite a lot of triggering content, and I recommend looking up some warnings before watching.

remember how people kept saying that the biggest threat to JangChae was Ryang Eum (the 'snake' and 'two faced homosexual [yes literally saw those words in a comment before it had gotten deleted in the MDL comment section for other unsavory remarks made about the other actors. i can call my son and myself a homosexual bc we are one but not like how they were trying to convey it tyvm]') and Gak Hwa/Qing Princess (the Jang Hyun obsessed bounty hunter who has a choking kink) but the actual threat turned out to be the straight men (Mr. F*ckass General Ex, the f*ckass king and newly minted f*ckass husband Yeon Joon) bc they weren't sh*t and a half. funny how that happened

SONG OF THE BANDITS
GENRES: Historical, Action, Drama
SUMMARY: A former Joseon slave and ex-member of the Japanese Colonial Army must choose between his own mortality and the vulnerable lives of his countrymen.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Hatchets, snipers, freckles, unjust parental deaths, unrequited love, spies, suitcases full of cash, regretful pasts, assassins, patriotism, dusters, wagon-mounted machine guns, bandits (obvs), and very few redeemable characters.
HOT TAKE: I'm sad that this show didn't get more push in the US media circuit. It's a gorgeous, well shot, well-timed western with touching elements of reluctance, redemption, honor, and compassion. It also features two of my faves, Kim Nam Gil and Cha Chung Hwa, as well as drama's most hated male companion, Lee Hyun Wook--who, to no one's surprise, plays a total psychopath.
I did chuckle at the close-ups of people riding horses. They were so obviously on some kind of hilarious horse-rig, but hey, what can you do.

Hotel del Luna Whump List
Tumblr media
Summary: (from MDL) "Nestled deep in the heart of Seoul’s thriving downtown sits a curious hotel, the like of which no one has ever seen before...Running this hotel is Jang Man Wol, a greedy, suspicious soul who has spent the past thousand years acting as the establishment’s CEO. Bound to the hotel by a deity who keeps her there to save her from going berserk and self-destruction with rage, hatred and thirst for revenge. Her only hope of escape is if she could let go of her resentment and hatred, and find love. Trapped in her resentment for a betrayal, Man Wol is doomed to spend all of the eternity running this odd establishment, catering to the needs of the most peculiar clientele.
Things take an interesting turn when Goo Chan Sung shows up. Once the youngest assistant manager ever to work at a multinational hotel corporation, Chan Sung finds himself forced to manage the Hotel del Luna because of a deal his father made with Man Wol years ago. Excellent with managing money, he starts to put Jang's excessive spending and disastrous finance situation in order, that may be exactly what this odd establishment and its cursed CEO needs."
Watch it on: Netflix, Viki
This one was not as whumpy as I hoped it would be, but it had some good moments.
Possible spoilers ahead...

Dramas 2023
Just some of my thoughts for some of the dramas of 2023...
-KING THE LAND !!!!! The natural chemistry between the main leads is just so so soooo real that it makes it hard to believe that they're "just friends" in reality; However, at the same time it makes sense, as both Junho and Yoona have been in the entertainment industry and have known each other for a long time (2pm and SNSD go wayyyy back, IYKYK). I'm kind of surprised it took them this long to meet for a drama project, but as a fan of both 2pm and SNSD, I'm so glad to see them both working together again. There are so many funny moments in this drama and the added sound effects and acting make some of the scenes so funny. I also like the easter eggs added in the drama haha. Definitely a feel-good drama. I ship the main leads..!! They already know each other so well and they're also starting to look the same haha. -See You in My 19th Life This series is based on the webtoon, and the drama was surprisingly not bad. Ahn Bo Hyun and Shin Hye Sun both are great together, and I feel like recently Shin Hye Sun has been typecasted into these somewhat typical bold, fearless characters that are also seemingly reflective of her own personality but in this drama I was able to kind of see somewhat of a different side to her (hard to explain hahah). And Ahn Bo Hyun...he's very versatile as an actor. And finding out that he's now dating Jisoo of BP...super unexpected haha !! The drama itself is somehow comforting with all the characters meshing well together. Pleasant~~
-Celebrity Hmmmmm this one was great but something about the female lead I can't put my finger on.. While I do feel like her acting has improved over the years and I see that in some scenes of this drama as well, there were parts where it just seemed flat but I'm not sure if it's just how her character was written. The storyline itself was definitely interesting nonetheless, and I didn't have much expectations going into it, but it does touch upon the effects of social media in modern times and I liked the mystery/thriller type of vibe.
-D.P. Star-studded cast; haven't watched this yet but excited to pick up where they left off for season 1.
-The Real Has Come The cast is talented and there are strong characters in this drama and lots of twists and funny moments. It's light and funny, but there's 50 episodes so there are definitely times where it's a bit draggy but also that's typical of any family dramas. -Oasis Jang Dong Yoon!!! Hahaha I think the cast did a great job with their portrayals though I feel like Jang Dong Yoon just has such a baby-face and looks like he wouldn't hurt a fly but he looked so cool playing this role as Lee Doo Hak. I liked the old-fashioned style of this drama as it took place in the 80s-90s Korea, so it was really refreshing to see the type of fashion, dialects and overall atmosphere during that time through this drama, and think about how much has changed. There were parts of the drama that felt a little repetitive, but I think overall the cast made up for it. -Apple of My Eye (금이야, 옥이야) Typical family drama, a little predictable but expected haha.

My Dearest/Lovers: The Other Woman
I have a bit of a problem with the female characters of this drama.
As much as I love Yoo Gil-chae and still want her and Lee Jang Hyun to be together in the end, Her Highness, Princess Gak-hwa, just wormed her way into my sympathies. And I think there’s a part of Lee Jang Hyun that feels the same way I do about her, despite his own misgivings and knowledge about her.
This headstrong, ruthless, feisty woman, whose tough and cruel demeanor hides a lonely young girl who’s afraid of a world without her doting father. This princess who hoped to experience how it is to be wanted for who she is when she was first married, only to realize that her husband still only married her for what she was and the political advantages that she would bring him. This woman who, in spite of herself, finds herself falling for Lee Jang Hyun and begging him to stay with her and love her for herself.
Unfortunately, Gak-hwa grew up in a world that sees emotion as a weakness and values cunning and cruelty to survive and end up at the top. She’s narcissistic and doesn’t know how to express what she feels in such a way that it doesn’t turn out to be manipulative of the other. It’s the only way she knows to keep people at her side, other than fear, and Lee Jang Hyun stumps her. He doesn’t fear her nor is he intimidated by her, and he’s able to read her and beat her at her own game.
It’s such a tragedy that the first person she finds who actually understands her and accepts her for who and what she is, also despises her. The one person whom she finds herself loving and wanting to stay by her side only does it because he wants to protect those whom he truly cares for. Yet it’s also ironic that she somehow reminds Jang Hyun of Gil-chae because Gak-hwa, like Gil-chae, doesn’t care much about what others think and would be more than ready to defy society, and I think that’s also part of the reason why he somehow decides to stay with her. He probably sees Gil-chae’s own stubborn pride mirrored in Gak-hwa.
Princess Gak-hwa is such a tragic character and I find myself wishing that Lee Jang Hyun would at least care for her a little and make her feel valued and wanted as a person and a woman, before everything in the world falls apart.
