WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE
GENRES: Comedy, Romance
SUMMARY: An actress plans to fake-marry her best friend but ends up going from enemies-to-lovers with his brother.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Lonely house dogs, lazy workdays, day trips to Busan, bus trips to undefined countrysides, acting contracts, bratty step siblings, thumb drives full of secrets, and a lot of running while holding hands.
HOT TAKE: This show could have taken a really earnest look at how people come to terms with their identity, their future, and how that intertwines with family expectations. Instead, it was a masterclass in vapid, stubborn chaebol power struggles, a vacuum of romantic chemistry, and never getting to the fucking point.
I kind of hate every character in this show? There was no real personal development for anyone, so they just came off as not really acting for their own benefit OR the benefit of others. The main plot's pacing was all over the place, there were too many unappealing sub-plots, and everything got conveniently tied up in an unsatisfying bow during the last 15 minutes of the series.

FLEX X COP
GENRES: Comedy, Action, Police Procedural
SUMMARY: Sometimes a gorgeous chaebol asshole is really just a deeply-struggling softie looking for something real to believe in.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Snowglobes, memory wipes, childhood trauma, salty jjigae, midnight ramen, true friendships, found families, exquisite eyewear, gaming chairs, iced americanos, filthy cars, murder, and upperclass privilege.
HOT TAKE: This show is one hell of an onion. It's got some seriously trope-y chaebol comedy wrapped around a core of emotional childhood trauma, trust issues, mistakes, and reluctant friendships. It will make you cry, it will make you laugh, and it will make you pump your fist in the air after the satisfying action scenes.
Although we really get to the core of Ahn Bo Hyun's character in a satisfying way, I feel that all the time spent on him sacrificed really getting to know the other cast members more. Here's hoping that we see much more of all of them in Season 2!

DOCTOR SLUMP
GENRES: Comedy, Romance, Mystery
SUMMARY: Life can be terrible, but it can also be beautiful and full of love. It’s just a matter of waiting for both.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Arcades, karaoke, drinking while on anxiety medication, professional gaslighting, rooftop cabbages, instant coffee packets, field trips, found families, letting go, insect hunting, bra shopping, and green flag romances.
HOT TAKE: This show does so many things so very well. It destigmatizes asking for help when faced with debilitating mental heath issues. It shows that you are allowed to feel lost whether or not you have a support system in place. It admits that although difficult times seem never-ending, there will always be small moments in between that are worthy of your heart.
That being said, the amount of drinking the MLs inflict upon themselves while on anxiety meds is worrisome. Also, Park Hyung Sik is a treasure and I want to keep him on a shelf to enjoy forever.

MARRY MY HUSBAND
GENRES: Supernatural, Romance, Mystery
SUMMARY: Did some mystery power give you a second chance at life? Of course you’re going to get revenge!
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Cats high on nip, Busan stew, clandestine love affairs, murder, adultery, high heels, gourmet food, glow-ups, lake sleepovers, workplace fashion, cancer, candies, glass coffee tables, and mysterious tattoos.
HOT TAKE: I made the mistake of watching this AFTER it ended, which meant having most of the plot twists spoiled for me.
This show could have ended after ep 12, but for some reason it insisted on introducing a whole new 4 episode plot arc at the end. I suppose it did tie up some loose ends, but it also forced watchers to endure more of the main character's ex boyfriend being a bastard abuser to literally every woman he meets.
Song Ha Yoon deserves an award for her portrayal of one of the most mentally disturbed villains I've seen in a ROMANCE in a very long time. A+ performance.

CAPTIVATING THE KING
GENRES: Historical, Romance
SUMMARY: The King of Joseon loves you whether you are dressed as a woman, a man, or a baduk swindler.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Baduk board lugging, poisons, treachery, international deceit, adorable Princes, scheming Dowagers, secret rendezvous, fashion eye patches, gisaeng friendships, terrible beards, and frustrated guardsmen.
HOT TAKE: I think there might be as many plot holes, gaps, and hand-waves as there are episodes of this drama. That being said, this show is gorgeous, full of desperate weeping, and some decently-progressive lust.
If you like slow palace drama or private royal romances, you'll enjoy this. If you're seeking out some REAL edge-of-your-seat mystery and intrigue, you might want to pass on this longing romance.

KNIGHT FLOWER
GENRES: Historical, Action, Romance
SUMMARY: A woman widowed before she even met her husband decides to take charge of her own fate as a nighttime Joseon Robin Hood.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Crude memorial engravings, hidden costumes, wall-jumping, rice distribution, filial piety, palace drama, bookstore meet-cutes, hunky Garrison Captains, lunchboxes, merchants, men’s handfans, tiger scrolls, and making sure you live every day helping those you can.
HOT TAKE: I love how this was one of the most evil Left State Ministers I've seen in a while. I love how tall and goofy Lee Ki Woo can be. I love the shy romances that run throughout the main cast. I love every facial expression of Lee Ha Nee and I love Lee Jong Won in his undergarments.

THE GOOD DETECTIVE SEASON 2
GENRES: Comedy, Action, Police Procedural
SUMMARY: A small team of Incheon detectives try to outwit a family of chaebol criminals set on international corporate domination.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Strawberry cake, elderly shoe cobblers, fried chicken, burdened children, backstabbing, police corruption, excellent artistry, hidden cameras, pour-over coffee, promotions, and Gangnam property bets.
HOT TAKE: This show doesn't pull any punches when it comes to putting our detective crew up again truly despicably evil antagonists. Despite the fact that I don't always love a pro-police drama, I still wanted this team of cuties to triumph despite all the red tape they had to trudge through along the way.

A SHOP FOR KILLERS
GENRES: Action, Mystery
SUMMARY: A hacker, a recluse, a muay thai killer, a young woman, her uncle, and his mercenary colleagues learn about their pasts and what the future holds for their careers.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Fridge post-its, aphasia, boring funerals, cheetah documentaries, explosions, hostages, secret armories, spy gear, bulletproof closets, part-time jobs, motorcycle dates, giant cleaners, CG robots, and familial trust.
HOT TAKE: This show is a rough watch in all the best ways. Its got great John Wick-style action, a simple enough plot to not distract from the character movement, and some great, low-key acting chops. Although it hasn't been announced, I CANNOT WAIT for a Season 2 of this show.
Also, as usual (and forever) Lee Dong Wook looks amazing in literally every scene he's in, no matter how many bruises or bandages he carries with him.

WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI
GENRES: Drama, Romance
SUMMARY: When life gets too tough, its important to have a place you can go where people believe in you for who you always were.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Convenience store hideouts, corporate abuse, haenyeos, amusement park failures, dog mascots, weather forecasting, old flames, flashy sports cars, loss and forgiveness, crooners, drunken kisses, and dolphins.
HOT TAKE: I'm always hesitant to watch these small town slice-of-life dramas since I know they're going to be slow and drawn out, but you know what? I've never regretted sitting through one yet. There's something just very soulfully soothing about casual strolls, nosy-yet-supportive neighbors, and honest dialogue and communication, and this show is no exception.
Nevermind best kdrama kissers: I want a list of best kdrama huggers, starting with the King, Ji Chang Wook.

THE BEQUEATHED
GENRES: Mystery, Drama
SUMMARY: A woman’s life takes a turn for the worst when she learns she has unknown family members and a contentious inheritance.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Workplace hierarchies, stabbings, failed golf courses, village mystery, yoga affairs, scheming landlords, private detectives, too-close-for-comfort relationships, talismans, self-righteous professors, and failed shamanism.
HOT TAKE: The opening credits to this show sell it as being somewhat shaman-heavy, but in truth, this is more of a well-paced murder mystery than anything else. Yes, the plot centers around a burial ground inheritance, but the focus is more on the police, their evidence gathering, and trying to stay away from red herrings.
There were a few characters that seemed to be created for drama alone, so I'm actually pleased this was only 6 episodes so we could just drop them off and never hear from them again.

MY DEMON
GENRES: Supernatural, Romance
SUMMARY: A cold-hearted Demon remembers what it’s like to be human after falling in love with the one who stole his powers.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Supportive PR employees, diabolical chaebols, powerful skinship, sham marriages, best friend butlers, sword dancing, Joseon flashbacks, tattoos, cropped suit jackets, cakes, clocks, disguised deities, full moon transformations, and the joy of just letting go and listening to your heart.
HOT TAKE: I didn't really love the start of this show, but its themes of loss and love really pulled on my heartstrings throughout. I didn't really love the ending either, but hey, its a love story and you get what you get. I will say though, Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung win the award for 'Couple with the Smoothest Skin I've Ever Seen in a Kdrama.'

GYEONGSEONG CREATURE
GENRES: Historical, Supernatural, Drama
SUMMARY: As if the 1940s Japanese occupation wasn’t enough to stress about, the citizens of Gyeongseong also have to look out for its oppressors' manufactured monstrosities.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Rebel forces, dynamite, piles of bones, clover necklaces, air duct transport, thousands of murders, redemption, forgivable informers, merchant solidarity, tea ceremonies, ninjas, and a big tentacled creature, obvs.
HOT TAKE: Park Seo Joon bats it out of the park again, I tell ya. Honestly, I didn't much care for the effects of the titular 'creature' overall--but each and every human in this show gave a stellar performance filled with guilt, hope, anger, and despair. SO much more than I would expect from a scifi drama.

DEATH'S GAME: PART 2
GENRES: Drama, Supernatural
SUMMARY: If you could, would you try to beat Death at their own game?
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Psychopath tests, flowing hair, violent road rage, columbarium visits, secret cameras, paintings made with blood, bitter memories, hiking, weak knees, buckets of blood, good cops, bad cops, thumb drives, retribution, and murder paintings.
HOT TAKE: I know there have been a TON of murders in this show so far, but I'm not sure I was ready for the sheer gruesome nature of the ones presented in Part 2. Again, acting is stellar and each episode had be sobbing. My only complaint is that we weren't allowed more screen time with Kim Won Hae, because he is a TREASURE.

THE STORY OF PARK'S MARRIAGE CONTRACT
GENRES: Comedy, Romance, Supernatural
SUMMARY: A fashion-forward Joseon fiancee wakes up in the 21st century and tries to make sense of all the familiar faces.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Couture hanboks, wells, terrible mother-in-laws, robot vacuums, choco pies, murder, ill-gotten Joseon artifacts, courtship, redemption, childhood trauma, workplace sabotage, and faulty pacemakers.
HOT TAKE: Really impressed with how easily both Yeon Woo and Sa Wol take to modern life. Within a few weeks, they're scheming, using computers, hailing taxis, and using modern kitchen equipment like pros.
The writers tried so hard to tie the characters in Seoul with their Joseon doppelgängers, but I think they either ran out of time, lost their notes in the process, or just kinda figured we'd be okay with whatever ending they chose as long as it was a happy one.

THE MATCHMAKERS
GENRES: Historical, Comedy, Romance
SUMMARY: A Prince with an unfortunate reputation and a noble lady moonlighting as a matchmaker find love for the entire village--and themselves.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Quick costume changes, wedding-night poison, secret attic erotica, sass-mouths, old bachelors, heart palpitations, minister scheming, temples, donkeys, god-tier matchmaking, and learning to love your fate.
HOT TAKE: Dammit, Rowoon has done it again. Despite the fact that the only kiss the main leads had was top-tier terrible, this show was clever, adorable, refreshing, and just overall an excellent watch. Everyone's chemistry was great and the plot fake-outs were funny. Would totally recommend for someone looking for a lighthearted drama that will make you smile.

DEATH'S GAME: PART 1
GENRES: Drama, Supernatural
SUMMARY: Caught in a game of punishing resurrection, a man who took his own life tries to find meaning in hanging on.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Pillar demons, citron tea, hundreds of cover letters, finding meaning in the mundane, fated connections, bullies, prison, male models, car chases, MMA, chair-fighting, gut-wrenching regret, hopelessness, redemption, and a dizzying number of A-list celebrities.
HOT TAKE: Episode 4 of this show broke me, hard. Although the plot is simple and a bit repetitive, every single acting performance is stellar. The character connections made with each new story gives the overarching experience real depth and emotion, and I can't wait for the second part coming in 2024.

MOON IN THE DAY
GENRES: Romance, Supernatural
SUMMARY: A wandering Silla-era soul decides to get centuries-old revenge on the woman he loved more than anything in this world.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Boot-cut jeans, heroic rescues, orphan firefighters, amusement park trips, worried lawyers, bad parenting, good parenting, steely looks, supportive roommates, living room ponds, grief, monks, lotus seeds, and learning to love your enemy.
HOT TAKE: This wasn't a spectacular show overall, but the historical flashbacks were so so much better than the modern-day mystery they supported. There's just something about Kim Young Dae with his romantic steely looks and silk noble robes that sells it. Conversely, I think Pyo Ye Jin made a better Seoul citizen than someone from the past.
