Friday, April 26 1901 Chicago Tribune blurb on Richard Lorenz whose work yesterday was introduced to me by a West Bend wall at an exhibit at the Wisconsin Art Museum. On "The Critical Moment": "A typical Lorenz painting, telling of the exciting life of the Western plains...A half-breed horsethief and a pursuing cowboy are the foremost figures." Billy the Kid meets Harry Potter on the Mississippi Delta, hearkening back and queuing to "Shakespeare in Love" and the Producer's "Springtime for Hitler."

Revisited the Windy City last week, and I spent some of the time exploring the city yet again. Here's two shots of the Tribune Tower and the Christmas Tree that's in front of it. The Tribune Tower was once the home of the Chicago Tribune and Tribune Broadcasting. From what I understand, the radio, TV and Newspaper media divisions moved out of the tower in 2018. 13/ This year, after a decade of getting out of tickets for speeding, blowing through red lights & other violations, Kriv was charged with 4 counts of perjury & 5 counts of forgery, all felonies, for allegedly lying to judges under oath and providing fictitious police reports.

14/ The girlfriend story, prosecutors allege, was fake. (link)

15/ On Jan. 12, the department collected Kriv’s badge and stripped him of police powers.

On Jan. 14, he got another speeding ticket.

On Jan. 17, Kriv retired.

The next day, Kriv’s car was ticketed again for speeding.

16/ For his time on the force, Kriv is receiving a pension of about $6,000 a month.

17/ A spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department would not comment on this story or answer any questions.

18/ A lawyer for Kriv said “many of the facts you compose are incomplete or not true,” though he did not say what about our reporting was inaccurate.

19/ “He understands the importance of accountability by all citizens when it comes to paying his outstanding tickets and looks forward to resolving this matter by making good on any oversights he may have,” said Kriv’s attorney.

20/ There’s no indication the Police Department knew how often Kriv was contesting his tickets in court.

There’s also no indication in records that the girlfriend he used as his alibi was real.

Amazon plans to lay off approximately 10,000 people in corporate and technology jobs starting as soon as this week, people with knowledge of the matter said, in what would be the largest job cuts in the company’s history. The cuts will focus on Amazon’s devices organization, including the voice-assistant Alexa, as well as at its retail division and in human resources, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The total number of layoffs remains fluid. But if it stays around 10,000, that would represent roughly 3% of Amazon’s corporate employees and less than 1% of its global workforce of more than 1.5 million, which is primarily composed of hourly workers. Amazon would also become the latest technology company to lay off workers, which only recently it had been fighting to retain. This year, the e-commerce giant more than doubled the cap on cash compensation for its tech workers, citing “a particularly competitive labor market.” Changing business models and the precarious economy have set off layoffs across the tech industry. Elon Musk halved Twitter’s head count this month after buying the company, and last week Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced it was laying off 11,000 employees, about 13% of its workforce. Lyft, Stripe, Snap and other tech firms have also laid off workers in recent months.
