About shipping in Farscape from someone who is mid season 2

I feel like John/Aeryn are kinda inevitable, like Mulder and Scully. You can’t really watch and enjoy this show if you don’t see their connection at all. With MSR i was all aboard this time i’m more like… i don’t dislike the ship but i’m not going batshit insane over it ya know? I enjoy seeing them, the do look extremely good together, they are clearly extremely dumb when it comes to communicating feelings and I like that in my ships xD

Now about D’Argo/Chiana, I’m still not sure how I feel about them. By now it has become clear that D’Argo has definitely strong feelings for Chiana but I’m not sure about her tbh. But obviously they have excellent sex so good for her/them! On the one hand i think they are kinda cute but it doesn’t always feel authentic I guess?

In the beginning i thought D’Argo and Zhaan would become a thing and I’m still 100% sure that they hooked up at some point (it might even have happened in canon idk i have a really bad memory and i’m constantly distracted). That leads me to the next point:

I sometimes feel like Moya’s crew is one big polycule, or, more accurately, a friend group where everyone occasionally hooks up with everyone and where acts of intimacy that most might interpret as romantic like kissing etc is common practice. Strongest defender of this image is Zhaan for sure and I love that for her <3

All that being said I can only reiterate my earlier comment about how much I love the platonic relationships of this show, Aeryn&D’Argo, Aeryn&Pilot, Pilot&Zhaan, D’Argo&John in particular. But honestly all of them are amazing

I’m not sure about Chiana yet, I love her, and i love her interactions with Aeryn and i defo can see it as romantic as well as a platonic ship

I guess this post has shown that i’m just a huge fan of the characters and their dynamics which is like… the thing that gets me to enjoy a show xD plot is secondary

I’m a little over halfway into Farscape season 1. I’m convinced now that this show was created because the creators thought the sci-fi genre wasn’t sexy/lewd enough.

I mean…one character had an orgasm from exposure to sunlight. John and D’Argo had wet dreams induced through alien mind control. The very necessary scene where Aeryn confirmed she was wearing John’s underwear by reading the Calvin Klein tag. John and Aeryn nearly having sex because they thought they were gonna die.

It’s gotten to the point where every scene is now coming off as, “this feels a bit sexual”. For example, there was a scene where John was feeding Chiana through the cell doors. It was just eating food, but the way Chiana was eating it felt suggestive.

Any Farscape fans here?

While I'm waiting for the WGA strike to resolve, I've decided to put my #Farscape #fanfiction AU novels back on my The Crais Chronicles website. It's going to take a few weeks. The final chapters of the series of novels need to be rewritten. The doc files have disappeared and the HTML I coded are blank. Woe is me. I know every scene I wrote by heart, but now my style is genre-based and the novels were written in literary style.

When my BFF let me know Claudia Black promoted the website on her Tumblr blog, I knew I had to put it back up.

I will post an update when it's all finished and ready for your Captain Bialar Crais reading pleasure. And yes, everyone shows up, including John, Aeryn, and all the rest. It's a long-form series about Crais getting himself together and becoming--mostly--a decent citizen.

One of my favorite things about farscape is that by the end of the show like all of the characters have developed superpowers. More shows need to do this.

First of all thanks for the shout-out, I love being a Farscape ambassador on tumblr dot com and really love that my John/Aeryn post was the first Farscape post you read on here. Never ceases to amaze and delight me when people actually READ the things I write. Like. My thoughts DON'T exist in a vacuum?! They left my brain and reached another human?! Incredible.

I actually agree with you on most points, except unlike you I really enjoyed the show's perpetual horniness, especially John and Chiana's off-kilter sexual chemistry. I think Farscape does some subtle, interesting psychosexual work with John and Chi and while it was mostly done in the background because Farscape is ~the John and Aeryn show~, I still enjoyed it for what it was and what it contributed to the story.

For me, John and Chi's relationship raises questions and sparks conversation surrounding the complexities of human sexuality and intimate relationships. Their relationship highlighted how sexual attraction and romantic attraction do not always go together. John and Chi have instant sexual chemistry and over time develop a friendship, but John's quasi-sexual friendship with Chi does not threaten his romantic relationship with Aeryn. John has affection for both women, he's attracted to both women, but the relationships are fundamentally different and can easily coexist rather than compete. Chi and Aeryn are not "rivals". There isn't a future for John and Chi as anything more than good friends who wanna fuck because John and Aeryn have such a powerful, cosmic connection. The writers understand this, the characters understand this, we understand this. Farscape said no to creating a love triangle or relying on cheap drama and instead it created a complicated dynamic that we don't often get to see in fiction.

Some may find the story's messages about love and relationships amoral or hedonistic, but I, your local amoral hedonist, think the messages are quite healthy, progressive, and honest: people often experience sexual attraction outside of their primary romantic relationship, and that's okay; people sometimes act on those feelings of sexual attraction, and that's okay; people, feelings, and relationships are complicated, and it can all get real strange and real messy real quickly, and that's okay. John and Chi exist and their relationship says that it is possible to be intimate friends with someone you're sexually attracted to without derailing either your friendship with that person OR your primary romantic relationship with someone else. Human sexuality and relationships can be incredibly complex, confusing, and hard to define. Life is a sea of grey areas.

ANYWAY. Farscape is a deeply imperfect series, no doubt about it, but its saving grace is that even when everything else falters or fails, John and Aeryn's love story slaps. hard. For me, that's enough. I am willing to overlook a LOT of bullshit if the central romance is strong, and John and Aeryn are graphene.

Farscape Rewatch - 2x07 and 2x08

Not my fave eps (in fact, 2x08 Dream a Little Dream is my least fave ep in the season and in my bottom three eps of the show) so not too much to say.

Home on the Remains 2x07

The start of D’Argo x Chiana, a glorious secondary ship.

I love the visuals of the pollen floating through the ship. I love that you can never feel entirely comfortable with Zhaan because underneath her calm, even good demeanor, there is madness waiting to peep out and the show never lets you forget it. Here it really manifests when she is in starvation mode and it’s scary and surreal and oddly beautiful. For Zhaan, like for many other of the characters, being good, doing good is not the default - it’s a conscious, hard-won choice and I love that. Second comment is that we get some glimpse into what Chiana’s life was before Moya, and why she was all spikes when she came on board. Her loyalty is manifest here as is her lack of self-worth: she is OK with whoring herself to get Zhaan a meal(!!!!!) (and I love how both John and D’Argo would much rather kill the guy). And so is her darkness: she kills the guy in a pretty gruesome way and doesn’t dwell on it for a second. I really do think she is the one who killed the Nebari keeper in the ep she first appeared. And also here is the start of Chi and D’Argo. I squealed at the kiss when I first saw it and get !!! on every rewatch. I loved how complicated this OTP was and how invested I was and how their flaws and strengths both intertwined into it.

And some of my fave quotes are here. I love Aeryn’s snide ‘I get to babysit the blooming blue bush and you get to play with your favorite little tralk’ and Crichton’s ‘you can eat anything if it’s fried’ is sort of a catchphrase in the Mousie household. I also love the scene with Rygel on the sled and Rygel biting John and John biting back. Yeah. This show was gloriously unhinged.

Not a favorite ep but enjoyable enough, which is more than I can say, with few exceptions for the ep that follows.

Dream a Little Dream 2x08

This is my most fast-forwarded S2 ep ever. Honest. Blah.

But even a truly bad ep has some glorious exchanges.

Anyway, this ep is largely a flashback by Zhaan about what happened to her, China and Rygel between end of s1 and start of s2. Zhaan goes crazy while being framed on planet of evil lawyers. Rygel and Chiana save her. Blah. End of flashback.

I’ve read someone say that the problem with this episode is that since it’s a flashback we have no tension. We know everyone will be OK. But I don’t think that is the case. After all, do we really expect Crichton et al to be bumped off at a random ep? No, but we still get excited about the eps (of course, DALD takes it further as we know everything will return to status quo we know now but still…) And we just a few eps ago had The Way We Weren’t which was largely set three years prior to the premiere episode and it’s one of the best eps of the season. For me, the flashback is not the problem. I think this is the ep that reiterated for me that while I find Zhaan and Rygel interesting in small dozes, an ep centered around them is not really my thing. And I love Chiana, but probably ditto unless she is interacting with someone other than them. Basically, my character order of preference goes: John, Aeryn, D’Argo, Chi etc etc. And an ep where my top 3 characters are absent (minus a very very cool hallucination) drags. The plot is also not scintillating. In fact, to call it simplistic with truly boring characters except for the regulars is to compliment it. Oh well, they can’t all be winners and Farscape had way less losers than most (after this ep, I adore every single ep until S4′s Coup by Clam - every single ep and that’s insane.) I do love Chiana and Rygel as trial lawyers, utterly hopped up and themselves in wiggle room exploitation. And the courtroom design is very neat. But that is about it.

Also, this is a small framing scene but I do love how, once again, John is the one who believes that talking it out helps. He gets more and more hardened but he still believes in talking it out, even if it’s now limited solely to those he loves (that is why in part the end of 2x22 DMD hits so hard - John lying there, agreeing to a procedure that will render him mute, because, as he says, there is nobody he want to talk to anyway and nothing to say. One of the worst times he’s been broken thoroughly; though he always manages to reassemble himself somehow.)

I do love Zhaan and John’s bond. I will always love Farscape for many reasons but one of them is creating all these powerful, complex women and not having them be love interests for the male lead. Crichton’s relationships with important female characters are varied - with Zhaan here she’s the older sister in so many ways - but except for Aeryn, they are never romantic, and very very rarely sexual (and if we remove Grayza where the sexual element is not by his choice, the rarity becomes even more pronounced) and I love that.

Chiana

✨ She’s always been a really out there woman, so her S/O isn't the first artist she’s been with. However, they are the first artist she’s really started to fall for.

✨ She loves how their work reflects their feelings more than the real world around them. It’s abstraction and colour attracting her more then the objects depicted in it.

✨ Finding how calm her S/O is and how art centers them tends to calm Chiana down from her more anxious or high strung moods.

✨ She could watch them for hours and has done so when they're working on a larger project.

✨ The sound of them working on their next piece has sometimes lulled her to sleep.

John Crichton

✨ The first joke John ever made about his S/O being an artist was a silly flirting attempt. “You gonna paint me like one of your French girls.” So stupid but also very appropriate for the astronaut who often liked to run his mouth.

✨ He's never really been able to understand how artists do their thing. Always being way too impatient to figure out colour theory when there was a whole universe to explore.

✨ However, this doesn't mean he doesn't respect his S/O.

✨ John will joke about their art making playful remarks about how he's lucky to be dating the next Picasso etc.

✨ He'll never bother his S/O when they're in the zone though. When they're really focused he'll stay away in order to give them space to work and not crowd them.

✨ Generally having trouble shutting up can make things difficult when they're focused. John knows and respects that so he'll let them do their thing until they're in the mood to spend time together

Ka D’Argo

✨ D’Argo is a warrior and as such didn’t really focus much on the more sensitive nuanced nature of art until later

✨He’d come to enjoy it when he’d finally found the love of his life in his wife Lo’lah. But that to had been ripped from him by her senseless murder

✨ Art became a waste of time to him after that. Once he was imprisoned it all seemed pointless. Only violence and revenge felt like appropriate outlets for D'Argo's feelings

✨ After ending up on Moya stranded with the rest of the crew including you, he was angry. However, your calming and artistic nature really got to him

✨ His S/O's passion for art and drive to create reminded him of how much he used to love being still and enjoying taking in an artistic work

✨ Through his S/O's creativity, D'Argo starts to get more in touch with his gentler aspect of his spirit

✨ This is part of what makes him start to really fall in love with them

✨ His S/O's flair for capturing the deeper facets of things through art makes him look at life differently. Like there might be more out there then violence and revenge

Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis

✨ Jool is someone who vastly appreciates art, even though her interests rest more in science, archeology and medicine.

✨ She's never been very good at creating art, but loves talking about it with her S/O.

✨ Learning about their S/O's species artistic history and sharing the knowledge she's acquired from traveling the stars to them, is one of the things which makes her feel close to them.

✨ Jool has a healthy appreciation for historical art and if her s/o has knowledge of art history either in their own culture or others, she will find that fascinating.

Pilot

✨ Pilot doesn't get out much, so seeing the world through your art is always a privilege.

✨ He'll be eager to see you paint your adventures with the rest of the crew.

✨ Being a very technical and organized person, Pilot loves art which reflects life and especially enjoys your paintings and art of anything to do with Moya.

✨ Seeing any depiction of Moya through your eyes is a treasure.

Scorpius (Also not necessarily crew. He was on the ship for most of the final season so I’m counting him)

✨ Scorpius is someone who likes a certain level of class and sophistication to his life. Depending on whether you are a more chaotic or calm artist will determine his feelings to your craft as a whole.

✨ If you're more chaotic he won't really know what to do with you. Your art is a reflection of that. You may clash on several aspects of your craft, but there is potential for you to change his stubborn mind with your open caution-to-the-wind nature.

✨ If you're more of the calm and organized type, then he's more likely to not clash with you. Scorpius is someone who desires stability and for everything to work out in his favour.

✨ He's also a fan of simplistic abstract art that is reminiscent of pieces made under peacekeeper occupation. Solid colours and simple structure.

Sikozu Shanu

✨ Sikozu doesn't really get the point of art. She's someone who likes to move fast and not linger on details.

✨ Sitting for a long period to do something that doesn't contribute to furthering her goals of either studying Leviathans or supporting the Kalish resistance.

✨ However, even though she may not see any personal benefit, Sikozu does have a certain amount of respect for your commitment to whatever artistic craft you are involved in.

✨ She may not be overtly positive or show outward interest in what your doing, but Sikozu will bring you something to eat/drink when she sees your in deep concentration.

✨ Sikozu is also not above occasionally peeking at what you're doing out of sheer curiosity.

Stark

✨ Stark hasn't had much time for art, as his life has left little room. He's been imprisoned or enslaved with little to enrichment until his escape.

✨This being said, Stark has a great appreciation for art. He loves it's spiritual and creative freedoms, which are things he for so long didn't possess.

✨ Being with an artistic s/o would be perfect for him. It would encourage him to be more open, as art inherently is connected to freedom for him.

✨ He might even join his s/o on a creative project or quietly working on seperate projects in the same room.

Aeryn Sun

✨ Aeryn, much like Sikozu, doesn't really see a huge point to creating art. Growing up in an environment that discouraged individualism and creativity.

✨ However, unlike Sikozu, Aeryn is much more open to learning to appreciate an artistic s/o.

✨ Aeryn is pretty guarded, but has a deep desire to learn from her encounters outside of her previous life as a peacekeeper.

✨ An s/o who can open her mind to how art can be both a fun and helpful outlet for pent up emotions or trauma would be super healthy for her.

✨ Aeryn also enjoys most an s/o who works with sculptures or pottery. It's something she could see herself doing if she were to choose one form of art to take up

Zotoh Zhaan

✨Zhaan loves art. By extension she would love having an s/o who is an artist.

✨ Zhaan loves immersing herself in the spiritual side of art even more so than Stark.

✨ If you get close enough Zhaan may even show you how she does paintings which depict the innermost spirits of those around her.

✨ She's also inclined to do a spirit painting of you while you work on one of your pieces.

✨ She'll see you not only as a muse, but as a kindred spirit with both of your art styles eventually harmonizing together.

This account is inspired by the @hdbuffy tumblr, which has been invaluable in making Buffy the Vampire Slayer accessible to new viewers, and allowing fans both old and new to easily make high quality content for the show. Kudos and full credit to them. It’s also slightly inspired by the Buffy archive on archive.org. I’m hoping that by making a similar resource for Farscape I can help more people find and enjoy this incredible gem of a science fiction show.

Here you’ll be able to find every episode of Farscape, including The Peacekeeper Wars, in 1080p quality. Except for The Peacekeeper Wars, all episode files are around 3GB. I’ve also uploaded English subtitles and all of the DVD extras I could find, including the Farscape: Undressed special that aired between seasons two and three. Most of the extras are in 540p, with a few in 480p.

For those who haven’t seen it: Farscape was an Australian-American science-fiction show that aired from 1999 to 2003, and was produced by the Jim Henson Company. By turns hysterically funny, emotionally devastating, brutally dark, profoundly romantic, and unabashedly bizarre, Farscape pushed the limits of what science-fiction television could be. Although the early parts of season one might seem to have things in common with the episodic storytelling of shows like Star Trek and Doctor Who, Farscape soon became an intensely serialized, character-driven epic about love, trauma, and galactic war. Featuring a protagonist that deconstructed the imperialist, American masculinity of typical scifi heroes, a romance so exhilarating and well-executed it’s impossible to describe, and a refusal to let its characters ever forget the things that happened to them, Farscape is one of the most brilliantly creative and subversive works of genre ever made. Beneath the colorful animatronic creations of the Jim Henson Creature Shop, the show is ultimately a philosophical exploration of identity and home. What does it mean to be an alien, and to be changed by the things that happen to you?

That, and it’s fun and sexy too.
