Rant post about Mei-nyan
Occasionally I like to have a good rant. I was recently reminded of something in another post. And I just realized the whole Meinyan plot was part of why I lost interest in Akatsuki no Yona for a certain period of time. Now when it seems her character development arc is mostly over, I can retroactively wonder what the point of her was.
Let’s start the journey of Meinyan.
Tumblr media
When Mei was first introduced as part of the Kai entourage I was initially very intrigued. I think her introduction and motives provided some interesting spice to the plot. She made some interesting points like why does Yona, who isn’t even of Hiryuu’s bloodline, get everything. Yona gets the dragons, the Hiryuu worship, the thunderbeast, and good health. While the ones of the 1st Dragon King’s bloodline gets a cursed illness and an early death. She provided a nice contrast to Soowon’s perspective and how he is coming to terms with the crimson illness curse and the Hiryuu stuff compared to her. She forced Soowon, who wouldn’t normally speak of it, to address some of his thoughts on it. She even gave perspective to Yona: “Am I privileged?”
That was all interesting because normally Soowon or Yona would not be talking about the reality of that kind of stuff. Though I did have to wonder why add another significant character of Hiryuu’s bloodline when we already had one.
So that was all good and all, but then it immediately went downhill when her reckless plan to ally with Soowon collapsed like a house of cards. Girl, did you seriously have no backup plan for this? You went in the middle of enemy territory and placed all your eggs in a basket on a guy you never even met before hoping he would ally with her in mutual purpose right off the bat.
And then when he said no, she is to instantly be put to death, because she knows the king’s illness. And she knew all that would happen if her gamble failed. Through Yona’s goodwill, she’s lucky enough to just get imprisoned with stay of execution instead of sliced up on the spot. She breaks out due to her powers of seduction and skills as a general (oh so she’s a concubine and a general too? Okay).
So what does she do instead of take the serendipitous opportunity to high-tail it out of the capital? She goes to wander around the enemy castle grounds to find her pet squirrel instead. I didn’t understand her priorities. Was this supposed to show us she has a soft heart because she would risk everything for a pet squirrel?
So naturally in her wandering among the bushes for her squirrel, she quickly gets spotted and taken down again. Through sheer luck gets found my Yun, treated, and sheltered all due to his good will. What another lucky break! But she still tries to get right back out there again to find her squirrel recklessly. No lessons learnt there!
In summary, Mei gets lucky break after lucky break through the goodwill of others rewarded by no discernible action of her own.
At this point I’m wondering what the point of her in the plot is anymore. Is she supposed to soften to the good people of Kouka and become a liaison for juicy intel on Kai? Well it turns out sort of, but she becomes more of a liability instead.
Here’s where things get even weirder for me. We switch over to South Kai and are offered a nice long awaited introduction of Chagol and some South Kai generals. Apparently Mei is some highly important concubine/ex-general to a lot of people. Due to…feelings I guess? Even as an ex-general we are never shown she’s of any notable political or military worth. It seems it’s just Chagol’s desire to take back what is his. Val has a thing for her too (and apparently even another general does too)
Meanwhile Mei is enjoying the hospitality of the capital in a night out with Yun and Lili and co. Why? I don’t know. Yun and them are taken with her too…for some reason I guess. Anyway she starts drunkenly rambling about Val, and here’s where I’m like, ‘Oh. So this is what it is’: We have a sub-romance plot in the making boys and girls. Val, a Kai general is gonna go turncoat for his true love to rescue her from the clutches of the dastardly Chagol. That’s what the point of her character in the plot mainly becomes.
Now disclaimer. I know this manga is technically a romance fantasy and some readers can rightfully find this little side romance cute and endearing. Just saying, for me it didn’t catch. Particularly due to how far away this is from the core plot and all the inconsistencies of her actions and other characters’ reactions to her. We are given chapters and chapters of this Mei subplot and I’m still wondering why I should care.
Anyway, Chagol sends a whole elite squad plus himself into the heart of the enemy capital to take back Mei. Burning Hiryuu castle at this point just seems like a side thing to do while he’s there, cause why the heck not?
Tumblr media
So the final nail in the coffin of the Meinyan stuff for me was the recent events with rescuing her from the enemy camp. I just didn’t understand any of it. Yun wants to infiltrate the South Kai enemy camp just to rescue some woman he met like a week or two ago. Yun. The usually most cautious of the bunch would probably rush in there himself and do it. Oh Yona and them are going to take up the cause instead? Okay good. Everything is swell. Yona, of course liking her too, can’t let her suffer in the clutches of the evil Chagol. And of course everyone else in the HHB is down with it too. So Yona and her crew are going to risk everything just to rescue some damsel in distress they barely knew in the middle of war with many many lives at stake.
Soowon doesn’t get it (I don’t either) but decides to help. Long story short they end up in a sort of win-lose situation through no particular planning themselves. They just barged in and let the pieces fall where they may. Luckily Yona gains another unlikely Kai General ally by chance because…you guessed it. He’s also obsessed with Mei. Anyway they end up dealing a mortal wound to Chagol and another general, but get some Five Stars injured and lose 3 of the dragons.
So Mei is now their dedicated ally. How could she not be at this point? After everyone going far far -into the galaxy- out of the way to help this random chick. And here we are.
Here I am near the end of the rant. I don’t know what Mei is supposed to do for us now except for be another helpful from-Kai ally, which we already have enough of at this point. Suffer with Soowon from the crimson illness giving Yona yet another reason to do something about it? I don’t know.
I still wonder what the point of her existence was. I mean I get that certain events needed to happen. Like the burning of Hiryuu castle, stealing of the Chalice, having the dragons get taken, killing Chagol, gaining some Kai general allies. All very intriguing important plot events leading to something big. And Mei largely served as an agent to that. I just loathed the execution of it. We are shown all the characters who obsess over and lose all reason for her. But we aren’t shown why. To me she’s just a random chick with some attitude who blundered around and had all the characters (and the plot) fall over for her.
Perhaps she’s bound for some crucial role in the plot that only her and her alone can achieve and things will get good for her character there, but it doesn’t change my misgivings leading up to it.
Anyway end of rant. Curious what others think of her!

You don’t need to wait until the afterlife, Mei Nyan, do it now. If anyone deserves to kill Chagol it’s her.

So... Chagol vs Su-Won, who’ll win?
I think Chagol. After what I saw in this chapter today, I have never felt such fear from anyone in this manga before. Not even Yona or Su-Won’s glares.
I WANT IT TO BE CHAGOL. I HATE HIM BUT I WANT HIM TO BEAT SU-WON’S AMBITIONS INTO THE GROUND AND MAKE HIM CRY. I WOULD ACTUALLY LOVE THAT.
Because then I’d know that Chagol is a villain I can actually take seriously. The endgame villain. Or is that the North Kai Emperor... idk.

I like your idea of Chagol being Hiryuu's descendant who hates Hiryuu. You are right that it makes no sense for him to come in person if he has no good reason. He risks everything and in a foreign land it is much easier to kill him. I hope kusa knows what she is doing.
Dear anon
Thank you. This is exactly as you say. Chagol risks everything by coming in person, so there should be a good explanation why he risks everything, his life and his throne, because someone may use this occasion to start a coup against him, just to burn down some old shrine. In this situation his motivation should not be lackluster. Characters in a story should have a good reason to act the way they act otherwise it can be a problem.
I think Fantastical Beasts is a good example, why main character having lackluster motivation is a bad idea.
Newt gets himself involved into a mess and risks his life and why? Because his former teacher asked him and Newt being a good boy went to do his homework. Does it sound like a good reason to risk your life? Not really, I imagine. The very first movie had serious writing problems no wonder this story flopped in the end.
Take Harry Potter as another example. He risks his life to stop Voldemort, but Voldemort killed his parents, so one can imagine that there are strong personal feelings here and this changes a lot.
If a character in a story makes something risky or extreme there should be either a build-up or explanation later on. I mean one of course can show character risk so much for shits and giggles, but I would not say this is a great idea here.
Also, coming because of Mei-nyan sounds incredibly weak. Chagol is an emperor who probably can have thousand of women, he most likely has a harem, so him coming in person because one of them run away doesn’t come across as plausible.

Akatsuki no Yona Chapter 242 questions part 2: The dragons. What exactly happened to them and where did they go? Where is the Chalice and is Chagol truly dead?
I decided to put both these topics in the same post because they might be closely related. This is going to be a super long post so if you like to read, come here.
In recent chapters three of the dragons apparently outright turned into actual dragons, went on a rampage attacking South Kai soldiers, then disappeared literally into thin air. I find it interesting that we weren’t actually shown the scene when this transformation was triggered.
Tumblr media
The key distinction being that they did not leave their human bodies behind when the dragons activated. So it looks like they legit turned into actual dragons this time. With what Kyouga saw anyway. They seemed a weird mix between physical and metaphysical. Then they go and disappear in a flash of light. Where did they go? Teleport to another part of the country? In spiritual limbo? Visit to the heavenly plane? One can only speculate.
I also find it interesting that Yona being in mortal danger wasn’t the trigger this time. They’ve been far away and fatigued before, so what changed? Well we didn’t see how so we don’t know yet.
This leads the question of the Chalice and Chagol. Chagol is supposedly dead, and the Chalice mysteriously missing? Coincidence? Is it related to the 3 going haywire and disappearing too?
The Chalice
Let’s talk about the existence of the Chalice first. We know it’s the instrument all the original dragons warriors used to drink the blood offered by the Dragon Gods from. We see a single image of it from the original origin story.
Tumblr media
When first hearing about the chalice being taken, I didn’t know how to feel about it. The importance of the chalice was never mentioned before. It just seemed like a random nice-looking cup in the picture just so the warriors can drink from it. But apparently it’s this super important artifact that is actually ‘the source’ of their power. It was the thing in Hiryuu castle that powered them. And if moved, the range of their constitution and power moves too.
Maybe Kusanagi just wrote the idea of the chalice being significant only recently. It’s kind of this guess I have. But I think she always intended to address the exact source of their power or more of the mechanism behind it, just didn’t decide what exactly it was. (I think we all assumed it was Hiryuu’s tomb or remains -though as a side note the Dromos couldn’t access it, there might be some significance there still).
About the mechanics of how the Chalice works I just have a guess. I don’t know if ‘source’ is the accurate term for it per se. The actual source of their power is the Dragon Gods themselves, no? The Dragon Gods themselves called them ‘extensions’ of themselves and so it is. I think what the cup actually is, is a helpful conduit between the realms. The gods in the heaven realm and the humans in the human realm. Zeno’s medallion is also of similar make I think. It holds a connection to the heavens. Though I don’t think it serves as the ‘tie’ between where the warriors and the gods lie, the Chalice does.
Whether it’s the source or conduit or whatever, the matter is that it is a very important artifact that shouldn’t have been taken from Hiryuu castle and mishandled by humans. Bad and unexpected things can happen when tampered with something like that.
Chagol. And Kai lore
Now let’s talk about Chagol. The Kai empire has a Phoenix symbol of the country like Kouka has the dragon symbol. Except with Kouka, the dragon gods are real and the legends are true. We’ve speculated if there is any true legends on the Kai side regarding a Phoenix. My impression so far are that probably not. Or not exactly to the level of rival Phoenix Warriors running around or something lol.
What I did find interesting was the legend about lake Shinsui and the fact that Kai and Kouka historically weren’t separate countries and some lore was shared after all. Well Hiryuu made his capital in what is now Kuuto of Kouka so much of his work was centralized there. So I think much of the accuracy of the tales was centralized there as well. But I have always wondered about that lake even before this intel. It’s a massive lake on a map of the region we have seen many times. And Shinsui literally means god lake (神水). We have yet to visit such a place, so I’m thinking it does hold some divine significance, just not in the way said by the Kai officials. Some food for thought.
Tumblr media
Back to Chagol. I’m not alone to theorize wildly of phoenixes and rebirth while holding a divine artifact as he literally talks about being reborn. I’ve seen some speculation about it. The oddness is too hard to ignore. While I do believe he was found dead (confirmed by the scouts), the Chalice is mysteriously missing! At the same time the 3 dragons go haywire and also later disappear. Chagol and Ra-an were the only ones there for miles it looked like. What happened to it? Kija is certainly not happy to hear about that. Were there dromos stalking them to take it, or some random passerby? Or did something more supernatural happen? Like Chagol using it to revive like a phoenix with powers? What happens when you die with that cup in your hand? Those are the wildest spitball theories however, and we don’t have enough evidence for it.
Tumblr media
A lot of people think the disruption of the Chalice is what helped trigger the 3 dragons going full dragon mode and psychically crying in a way Yona can hear. So I might call it a disruption in the ‘dragon force’ lol. It is even speculated Soowon’s illness kicking in again so quickly despite the senjuusou is also related to this disruption.
If so, why didn’t it happen to Kija too? I’m not sure. Maybe the chalice is unrelated after all and because we didn’t see what happened to cause the other 3 to turn, we just can’t tell. Or maybe Kija wasn’t physically stressed enough for it to happen. Though I suspect it might happen to him too and he will join the other 3 in this chaos. Why? Well Yona’s scary premonition of seeing 3 dragons, Soowon and Meinyan dead. That dragon power shortening their lifespan would certainly lead to their earlier than -even the already early- expected lifespan of 3 dragon warriors. And if the crimson illness is also connected, that too.
Could this all be the start of the lead-up to the prophecy? Or am I speaking too soon? Is the true ‘gathering of the dragons and blood being revived again’ happening now?
Tumblr media
Is the ‘darkness that falls on the land’ not just the war but also something supernaturally bad happening? Maybe triggered by the disruption with the Chalice? And what of the Sword and Shield? If so what will be Yona’s BIG decision to avert this tragedy, prevent everyone’s death, and have the ‘Red dragon return at dawn’?

Soo-Won vs Chagol
Now I wanna see a battle of wit between Soo-Won & Chagol....let's see who outwits whom
Chagol's move was good if we consider that the reason of his action was solely to spread panic among the ppl of Kouka & lower their spirit (tho it's not clear yet whether he burnt the castle as he knew it's the source of the dragons' power or some personal grudges against Hiryuu or smth else).
But it seems that dude didn't complete his task with perfection...Hiryuu's grave is still intact....
I liked how Soo-Won pragmatically handled the issue for the moment but what next? Definitely he's not gonna sit down & relax....and since Yun wanna go to Kai to rescue Meinyan (damn another damsel in distress-_-), what if he uses this opportunity?? Maybe access few internal infos through Val??
I'd love to see Chagol as not only some typical evil irredeemable cartoon vilian but also someone who would throw some serious challenges to Kouka (for example, get to know about Soo-Won's illness & use it against him) and how Soo-Won tackles the situation....and pls don't let that 'illness' play conveniently again for God's sake!! It's not funny anymore

Goddamn, Yona and Chagol stand-off! EPIC!
Tumblr media
I love how despite Yona’s weakness in physical strength, her mental strength never wavers, nor do her people skills. She is truly strong.
Also, I love the art. She looks a lot more brutal and serious somehow. I really like it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what if she’s weak in physical strength? She doesn’t care. She literally does not care. She’s not ashamed to admit it either, which is why she gets help where she needs.
And in addtion, she will play sneaky and act to get to where she needs to. Hak can definitely make up for strength, but this woman is the beacon, the center of it all. She has to be respected here for her daring quality. Knowing the risk, her eyes look at Chagol with ever-stagnant, cool defiance.
She’ll utilize whatever she needs to fight a strong, towering man like Chagol with the anger of a dragon and destroy him regardless. I love such stand-offs and glares. Level-headed and strong, this woman is not playing around.
