Akatsuki no Yona Chapter 244
These two pages…..
are so sad. This is like search for the dragons 2.0 but without the fun and shenanigans. This time it’s forboding and solemn. Yun being so scared they may not get back what they had…all together and happy, is a sign for more pain to come.
Is this the true ‘when the 4 dragons are gathered..’ part of the prophecy? Perhaps it is indeed the start of the prophecy and I think we are approaching endgame.
It’s so depressing but I do like how narratively there was this slow progression of seriousness and bleakness for the group as they became more famous and involved with the wars. And it’s been hinted it would come to this since the beginning. I really like that. And I really wish the happy hungry bunch can go back to those simple days, but alas I don’t think it was ever meant to be permanent. As Yun suggests he knew it wouldn’t last. It’s so depressing and the fact that it hits me this way shows the good writing, I actually care about these characters.
The other 95% of the chapter on the other hand….about the Mei and Val stuff, I continue to care less 🫠

A New Place In Life
@www98vikitoo I wrote a Meinyan X Yun oneshot. (It takes place in the most recent chapter, 227, and I hope I wrote Meinyan right? I’ve never written her before, and so, hopefully since it’s told more from her perspective that it’s okay.) Also, sorry it’s so short. I wasn’t at the computer when I wrote it, and the fic felt complete where I ended it.

I've heard some people complaining about the addition of Meinyan and Val's relationship to Akatsuki no Yona on the grounds that it detracts from Hak and Yona's "screentime". To me, I think it adds to their story.
Admittedly, when Meinyan was first introduced, I didn't care for her at all. She seemed spoiled and shallow, and overall just bitter about her lot in life. But as her story developed, I've come to realize the genius of adding her to the ensemble, particularly in how her character relates to the three central characters of the plot: Yona, Hak, and Su-Won.
First, she's a foil for Yona. In the beginning, Mei is shown for what Yona could have become, a bitter woman who compromised her values and self worth just to survive. But then, she's befriended by Yoon, and her potential blossoms. Later, through Val's eyes, we she her as she was - a strong woman who was determined to become one of the best fighters in the Kai Empire.
Val is a foil for Hak, and Hak can relate to him (and thus to Mei) because of his strong feelings for her. Check out these panels from ch. 135...
Hak knows *exactly* how Val feels. After all, Val and Mei were friends first. When Meinyan became the Emperor's concubine in order to have a chance to meet the one person who thought she could really relate to - Su-won - she became unreachable to Val. But he was (mostly) content to watch over her from afar. When he learned that she was being harmed, and that she wanted to escape (and that she had feelings for him too), he sacrificed everything to save her...his career, his country, his reputation. All that mattered was being with her. Val is a tanned, blonde-haired, Hak. And because of that, Hak is eager to help Val achieve his goals.
This isn't lost on Yona either. She gets it. Yona and Hak are both rooting for Mei and Val, because they see the parallels in their stories. And so, the audience is meant to be rooting for them, too.
But probably the most interesting part of this relationship is how it relates to Su-Won. I don't completely hate Su-Won, but I wouldn't shed a tear if the crimson dragon sickness claimed his life. He's earned that fate. If it was just him suffering from it, I wouldn't care if they ever found a cure for it. But now that I'm rooting for Mei and Val, I suddenly have a more compelling reason to want them to figure out how to cure this disease. Because, LOOK at them!
They're so cute. They deserve to be happy too. I want them to have a long life together. I want them to be lifelong friends with Hak and Yona. I want their kids to be buddies. I want them to have a bright future too, and it doesn't take anything away from Hak and Yona to give them that.
