kotlc, but with soulmates?
Everyone has a soulmate. Everyone.
Grady and Edaline found each other easily enough. That was that. They married, fell in love, and nothing bad happened.
Della and Alden found each other just before they thought that they weren't going to. Just as Alden was about to marry Alina. Their hasty marriage was for love, definitely not for the reason everyone else thinks, but doesn't say.
Kesler and Juline aren't soulmates, but they love each other anyway. Juline met her soulmate once, and he wasn't that great.
To become a Councilor, one must forsake their soulmate bond. Those who do are lauded - but only if it is to become a councilor. Never mind those they leave behind, of who are met with disappointment. (Their soulmate was a councilor becomes a code for aro and ace people, along with people who don't want to get married)
Gisela was especially... excited to find that her soulmate is an empath. Of all things, the best for her plans (Cassius married her for naught but that she was his soulmate)
Mai has always, deep down in her heart, known that she and Quan were an example of how soulmates don't always end up well.
Fitz doesn't know his soulmate yet, but Sophie and him thought they were each other's. It hurts more than you can imagine when Sophie informs him she doesn't have a soulmate bond at all.
Brant and Jolie were soulmates, but that changed nothing.
Stina's parents weren't, but they faked it anyway. Somehow, they got away with it. As a result, she is one of soulmate's biggest supporters.
Tam doesn't want a soulmate, but...
Everyone has soulmates. Everyone. (the pain of that statement stings Sophie in more ways than one)

Can we talk about a character who grew up in a tower with an emotionally abusive father and a distant mother?
Whose mother turned out to be more evil than he could ever have imagined?
Who chose to look up to his best friend’s older brother, only for him to turn out to be a traitor as well?
Who has never, ever, ever had a good role model once in his life?
can you blame him for being bad at making decisions?

It actually baffles me that Keefe and Oralie are like... The only nice Empaths in kotlc. Consider:
Cassius is a horrible father and generally a trainwreck of a human who doesn't seem to have any real feelings but just enjoys holding people (cough his son cough) to ridiculous standards of perfection to make himself look better.
Stina and her mom (Vika I think?) are selfish and stuck up, making them act rude and snobby towards others.
Vespera... She's a twisted, creepy murderer, so there's that.
Am I forgetting anyone?
They can all FEEL other people's emotions, but 4/6 of them refuse to CARE , and I'd really like to know why that is.

Cassius prefers Fitz over Keefe. Alden prefers Keefe over Fitz. They end up using their parent issues against them, to manipulate them.
They tell the other's son something they never told their own:
"I'm proud of you."
And that hurts them. but they keep coming back for those crumbs of validation. They don't see it.

tw for abuse (physical and emotional)
okay so I've seen a lot of differing opinions on this. Keefe has said that elves wouldn't hit their kids and stuff without their mind breaking from guilt, but reminder that Grady burned someone's hand off and faced zero consequences, and while that WAS revenge, I feel like Keefe was lying. But I wanna know what everyone else thinks.

okay so im reading everblaze, Gisela says that Keefe talks about sophie ALL the time. And Keefe does not strike me off as initiating convos with his parents and seems to avoid them as much as he could. So the thought of Keefe going out of his way to tell his parents how cool sophie is despite not wanting to talk to them makes me want to scream in a pillow EEEK
I can imagine him getting all giddy when Sophie is casually brought up by Cassius and goes into a rant abt how awesome she is.
Also, when biana only jokingly said that her powers as a vanisher is much better than sophie's and Keefe got all defensive.
I'M GOING TO DESCEND INTO THE SKY I LOVE THEM SM

not only are the good parents well written abusive parents is also impressive for a middle grade series, normally the abusive parents in books are physically abusive or drunk or both.
but the Sencens and the Songs are verbally and emotionally abusive in cannon. which is not something that’s seen often, and they’re not all written with the same personality, they are all distinct characters, while a lot of the time abusive parents in media will feel like copy paste of the same character over and over, which is not how you make diverse characters

In books 3 and 4 Shannon really tried to make as many characters as possible get betrayed without making it feel like she was actively trying to just cause drama

theory (there's a tldr at the bottom):
so we know that in legacy, lord crustius tells sophie and keefe that gisela wanted a very specific type of child. she wanted a son who would be a powerful empath, which she got. now, at the beginning of the series, we're told that the elves don't have sexism, like at all. so why would gisela want a son in specific when it's established that the elves don't have any sort of gender prejudice? (side note: they obviously do have gender prejudice. but that clearly was not intentional on shannon's part, so i'm just gonna roll with it for the sake of the theory.) what could a son offer that a daughter wouldn't be able to in a society that values both equally?
the answer ( . . . which is very homophobic, but i think we've already established that the elves are not exactly lgbtq+ allies):
a boy can be in a romantic relationship with a girl. (once again, i'm not saying this is actually true, i'm just saying that this is how i think gisela would view it. you know. since she lives in a homophobic society.)
but why would gisela want a child that could be in a romantic relationship with a girl?
because she'd found out about project moonlark and had somehow found out that sophie was a girl. so, she wanted a son who she hoped she'd be able to encourage into a romantic relationship with said girl once they were of a reasonable age. but why would she want that? so she could spy on the black swan. by continually using keefe and erasing his memories, she'd be able to use him to unknowingly wheedle information out of the girl (sophie) for her own purposes. which would be far easier if they dated.
but wait! but keefe is older than sophie! so how did gisela get her hands on any of this information when sophie wasn't even born?
probably because the black swan knew they were trying to make a girl before sophie was even born. so gisela would've gotten her hands on that information, as well. once she knew that, she wanted keefe to be a powerful empath so that he'd be able to tell if the girl (sophie) was ever lying to him, so that he could be the perfect spy for his mom.
and that is why i think that keefe can read sophie's emotions without touching her. because he was genetically modified to do specifically that. he was created by gisela specifically to get as much information as possible out of the black swan through sophie. so of course, gisela wanted keefe to be able to pick up on sophie's emotions without ever touching her so that he'd be able to see if she was hiding anything. she wanted him to be male because she lives in a heteronormative society and wanted her child to date the black swan's creation.
so how come lord crustius can also read sophie's emotions without contact?
because he was also genetically modified (kinda). remember the vials of light and shadow he drank? those are what made his empathy strong enough to pick up sophie's emotions without contact. he was basically a necessary in-between step that gisela needed to do to get the son she so badly wanted.
tldr: the reason keefe and lord crustius can read sophie's emotions through the air without contact is because they were specifically designed to be able to do so by gisela, who wanted keefe to be male in order to date the black swan's creation (which she knew would be a girl) and a strong empath so he'd know if she was lying to him. she wanted this so she'd be able to manipulate keefe into spying on sophie and the black swan for herself and her own gains.

I’ll only say this once, he told her, and I’ll deny it if you ever bring it up again. But… if there’s one thing I know about my son, it’s that he’s a survivor. And if he could endure more than a decade at Candleshade with his mother and me, he can handle anything the humans throw at him. Let him take care of himself. He’s been doing it his whole life.
