THAT’S WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING
I feel like the cover being “underwhelming” is rly fitting. It’s set in the human world, and everyone is wearing human clothes, of course it won’t look as magical and majestic as the others.
On top of that i’m pretty sure there won’t be any scenes where anyone is using elvin abilities, which have been prevalent in basically all previous covers.

So yeah that’s definitely what was going on in book 1 when one of the first things she said about keefe was that he was cute… ooh or when she thought he’d gotten her a necklace and had a whole mental spiral about how keefe was getting her jewelry since when did Keefe get her jewelry, it wasn’t like he—why was she thinking about this??? Which is how she handles all crush thoughts ever, she files them away to not think about ever
Ooh or in book two where she’s on silveny with Keefe and he hugs her and tells her he cares and she “feels a warmth spread through her” mhm that was definitely a… sibling warmth?
Or in neverseen where he does something (I think either he says something really sweet or gives her a hug) and she describes the feeling she gets as her stomach flip flopping, which is just another version of the heart flutters fitz gives her?
And I don’t know if I even have to bring up the part in legacy where she internally goes on this whole rant about how keefe is a PARTICULARLY good looking guy, and he sat up and that only drew more attention to the fact that he was shirtless, and his hair looked like he’d gone swimming and let it air dry and “the beachy look really worked for him,” and most elves are good looking but there’s something particularly handsome about Keefe—and yeah she says ALL of this like she’s totally being objective because she couldn’t possibly have feelings for him bc at this point she’s dating Fitz, except no she definitely was just ignoring her own feelings because THOSE ARE NOT PLATONIC THOUGHTS
She never names it as a crush in her head until book 9 because she doesn’t realize it. Instead, the narration shows to us that the feelings she has for keefe are more than friendship, and then in book 9 she’s like “oh. Oh. I actually like the idea of being with Keefe—a lot. Where did this come from?” But if you reread the books it’s clear that it was there all along and she was just ignoring it.
The difference between her crush on Fitz and her crush on Keefe was that she didn’t avoid the fact that she liked fitz, but pretty much decided in the narration early on in book one that she wasn’t going to think that way about Keefe. I could even find the quote where she said it if you want.
I don’t understand people who say sophie never seemed to like Keefe. Did we even read the same series??
Like even if you don’t ship them—which is fine! ship whatever you want—you HAVE to admit that her narration REALLY points to her having feelings for keefe!!
Sophie never seemed romantically interested in Keefe, sorry
it was more like a little sister comforting her brother
which is JUST as sweet!
it just seemed more like a sibling dynamic is all

you could theoretically read the series in the order 8.5, 9.5, 9 instead of 8.5, 9, 9.5 because books 9 and 9.5 take place parallel to each other but also sophie and keefe never interact between them so hypothetically there should be no difference (and no spoilers either way).
another thing you could theoretically do is alternate between reading books 9 and 9.5. a chapter here, a chapter there. it would be like reading a longer version of unlocked, with the povs alternating between sophie and keefe.
in fact, in theory, there could be a possibility of even less spoilers if you read it 8.5, 9.5, 9. for example, if vespera makes an appearance in unraveled, and you didn't know she would die yet, it could be a really cool way to see her last minute and have an extra layer about her before her death. whereas if vespera makes an appearance in unraveled and you already know she's going to die, it feels a little more empty. not completely meaningless, but like. kinda empty. like if vespera hints at a larger plan or something in unraveled and you didn't know she was going to die, you'd be super excited to see this plan shake out, but now that we know she's going to die something like that wouldn't hit as hard.

So on the one hand, I get that there isn’t as much history and culture surrounding racial prejudice and such in the lost cities, since they’ve definitely got discrimination but not of that variety. So in the Elvin world, they might not think twice about disguising themselves by switching races any more than humans might think of disguising ourselves by adding a mustache or changing our hair color, because there’s no deep history surrounding people who do or don’t have mustaches or blonde hair? So like IN UNIVERSE this might be totally fine
That said
Shannon I love you but this is a book for a human audience
Also Sophie should be somewhat bothered by this??
This is DEFINITELY an icky thing to include in the book, cause I stand by the fact that I really don’t think it’s a big deal for the elves, but the elves are fictional and WE are real and this book is for US so, uh, this is kinda giving me an ick—
DOES SHE NOT HAVE AN EDITOR????? Who decided this was okay like hello????
forget the description of the song twins WHAT THE FUCK WAS THIS????

SHANNON NO IM SORRY WHAT?????

TRUTH SERUM IS MY FAVORITE OH MY GOSH I LOVE TRUTH SERUMS
Thank you for gracing us with your writing once again!!
Thingy
Tired. Take it or leave it, it's been rotting in my drafts for a while now.
“Hmm.” Reynie said to himself. “This is probably not good.”
He was standing in the dining room, looking at a glass of what was now very obviously not water. It was clear and about the same consistency of water, but it tasted ever so slightly… off.
He knew enough from living in a house of scientists that he should not be drinking unidentified liquids, but in his defence this one was currently being housed in a regular drinking glass that had been sitting on the table right next to an actual cup of water.
Sticky came racing into the room, holding an erlenmeyer flask. His face fell when he saw Reynie standing there, examining the glass of not-water.
“Oh no. Reynie, you didn’t drink that, did you?” Sticky looked apprehensive, but Reynie took it as “concerned about potential reactions” apprehensive, and not “you just drank something toxic” apprehensive.
“Yes,” He said slowly, “A little. I recognised pretty quick it wasn’t my water. Should I be worried?”
Sticky looked mildly horrified, then slumped into a chair. “No, no. That is, it’s not harmful. But you might want to stay away from Constance for the remainder of the afternoon.”
“And why would that be?” Reynie carefully set the cup on the table in front of Sticky and sat down next to him. His friend quickly grabbed the glass and poured it into his flask, capping it.
“It’s a truth serum,” He sighed, “I was testing out a potential formula that might be similar enough to the compound Curtain has, to see if I could then make some kind of antidote. But I had run out of flasks so I put it into a regular cup until I could come back with this one. I’m so sorry, Reynie.”
Reynie thought about this. “So I’ll have to answer any question truthfully for the next… several hours?”
Sticky nodded ruefully. “It shouldn’t be for too long; this is a much weaker formula than Curtain’s. But, yes, definitely an hour or two. A mouthful is about twelve or so millilitres, which converts to around two hundred and forty drops, or about four hours. But, like I said, this is not as potent as that compound.”
He sighed again. “I really am so sorry, Reynie. I knew I shouldn’t have left it just sitting there like that, but I thought I would have enough time to run and get a flask before anyone came in. This is all my fault.” He put his face in his hands.
Reynie patted his friend’s back. “It’s alright, Sticky. These things happen sometimes. I’m not mad.”
Sticky peeked at him from between his fingers. “Are you sure?”
Reynie gave him a deadpan stare.
“Oh, right. Truth serum.” Sticky remembered sheepishly.
The next forty-five minutes passed smoothly, with Sticky tentatively engaging Reynie in careful conversation, but that became a lost cause as soon as the girls returned from their trip to the park.
“Hello, boys!” Kate crowed, bouncing into the room. “How was your afternoon?”
Sticky looked fearfully at Reynie, who simply answered, “Interesting. How was the park?”
Constance stomped in after Kate, taking great delight in shedding her raincoat with the most drama she could muster. “It was great! There were rain puddles everywhere, and I even managed to get Kate wet.” She smiled, seeming very self-satisfied.
Kate rolled her eyes, but she grinned anyway. “Mr. Benedict wants us to do another memory challenge with Connie here, like that one we did before. You know, where we think of embarrassing memories or secrets and Constance has to try and pick them out? There’s hot chocolate in it once we’re done.”
Sticky looked mortified, but Reynie just smiled quietly. He had been preparing for an occasion such as this for a while, and had a collection of memories that, while certainly not pleasant, wouldn’t be too hard to discuss with his friends.
Constance saw his smile and narrowed her eyes. “What are you smiling about, Reynie Muldoon? Should we start with you first?”
Reynie shrugged. “Sure, why not?”
He waited for Constance to get herself settled at one of the dining room chairs, then folded his hands and looked at her, waiting.
It wasn’t too intrusive when Constance was sorting through his thoughts, especially since she’d been getting better at it. He was focussing on a memory of one time he had spelled a word wrong out loud when he had been called on, but it was still difficult to keep his mind locked onto the memory when he felt Constance moving around in there.
Eventually, she found the image and her face screwed up in concentration.
“You… You’re in class, and I can see writing on the board. You’re… You’re… You’re spelling something!” She called excitedly.
Reynie opened his eyes, smiling at her and letting his thoughts wend free.
But Constance didn’t relax. Her eyes remained shut, and her expression darkened.
“There’s… There’s something else…” She scrunched her eyebrows together. “You got it wrong. You got it wrong, and the teacher… The teacher made fun of you!” Her eyes popped open and she looked at Reynie accusingly. “You got in trouble, and the teacher hit you with a ruler!”
Reynie winced. “Constance, it’s not a big deal.” He muttered, embarrassed that she was continuing to dredge up parts of the memory.
“Reynie,” Kate said, aghast, “That’s not a good thing.”
Reynie looked at her, puzzled. “I know it’s not a good thing, Kate,” He emphasised, “But it wasn’t that bad.” He turned towards the others uncertainly.
Sticky pushed his glasses up, considering. “Well, corporal punishment is generally frowned upon, but there is no federal law making it illegal nationwide. In some states it is outlawed, but in others it’s still completely allowed.” He looked unhappy as he said this, glancing sideways at Reynie.
“It hurt.” Reynie said simply. Then he gasped, covering his mouth with a hand and shaking his head violently.
“What?” Kate was on her feet like lightning, looking furious and agitated. “Reynie, you never say when something hurt you. How bad was this that you’re willing to admit it?”
“I– Uh,” Reynie looked panicked, waving a hand frantically at Sticky.
After a few seconds, it dawned on the other boy what he wanted. “Reynie accidentally drank a truth serum I’m working on!” He blurted out. “He wasn’t supposed to, but I left it out and he drank it and now he’s got to tell the truth for the next… couple of… hours?” He finished sheepishly.
Kate opened her mouth, flabbergasted. “First of all.” She said, whirling on Sticky, who cringed away at the ferocity of her voice. “How do you just accidentally leave truth serum lying around? And, secondly,” She continued, turning back to Reynie, “Why does it take a truth serum for you to be honest with us? We’re your friends, I thought you trusted us.” She sounded hurt.
“I do!” Reynie hastened to say. “I do trust you. I just… I don’t want to talk about the things that have gone badly in the past. I don’t want to have to bring it up, especially not around you guys.”
“But why?” Constance interjected, crossing her arms and tilting her head at him. “You say you trust us, but then you don’t want to tell us things?”
“I want to tell you!” Reynie’s eyes glistened with frustrated tears. “I always want to tell you guys everything. But this stuff, it’s not fun. I don’t want you to be sad or have to think about it. It’s my burden to carry, not yours.”
That took all the air out of Kate. She sat down, looking confused. “Reynie,” She said softly. “Why wouldn’t we want to know?”
Reynie stared at her, utterly bemused.
“I think,” Sticky began cautiously, “What Kate is trying to say is ‘Why should it only be your burden to carry?’ We care about you, and we want to know all the things you’re willing to tell us. Even the bad stuff.”
“Especially the bad stuff.” Constance piped up.
“Okay,” Sighed Reynie. “If you really want to know…”

When I said I'll never let you go
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said don't leave me here alone
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight

My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys x Jolie Ruewen on her way to death.
“Oh, here we go again, the voices in his head”: Brant has probably always been insecure as hell, being classified Talentless and a bad match didn’t help.
“Called the rain to end our days of wild”: this is Jolie talking about how he tried to make her go away when he started to feel dangerous. I’m sure he did.
“The sickest army doll, purchased at the mall”: Jolie herself, her multiple fights to try and change that world.
“Rivulets descend my plastic smile”: Jolie probably cried a lot at the unfairness. She spent all her time with Brant and suddenly they couldn’t see each other anymore, except sometimes on weekends…
“But you should’ve seen him, when he first got me”: from what we get. She’s his joy.
“My boy, only breaks his favorite toys”: only me. He cares only about Jolie.
“I’m queen, of sand castles he destroys”: Jolie trying to built up trust and durability, despite being away, locked in Foxfire, while he is getting deeper and darker into his loneliness.
“Cause it fit too right, puzzle pieces in the dead of night”: that line is about Jolie trying to understand. Discovering the Neverseen. Infiltrating. As recomposing a puzzle of what’s going on.
“I should’ve known it was a matter of time”: before she’d go down in flames cause she played with fire.
“There was a litany of reasons we could’ve played for keep this time”: all the love they shared. All the power they had. All her sweetness. But this didn’t work enough to take him out.
“I know I’m just repeating myself”: each time she goes to see him, saying the same words over and over again, he is not alone, she won’t abandon him.
“Put me back on my shelf”: more time passes, less effective her words of reassurance are.
“But first pull the string”: she loved him till the end, even knowing, even playing double-agent, so she still asks him to tell he loves her.
“And I’ll tell you that he runs because he loves me”: Brant just running away cause he doesn’t want to put her in danger, but he is danger.
“Cause I knew too much”: definitely. She’s been executed on order of the Neverseen probably, she knew too much of the organization and was seen as a traitor, a threat.
“There was danger in the heat of my touch”: *his touch. There is danger in them. In their situation, in how the world treats them.
“He saw forever so he smashed it up”: forever can be scary if you’re not used to real love, and I doubt Brant got the knowledge outside of what the Ruewens gave him
“Once I fix me, he’s gonna miss me”: she never get the chance to fix things. But he still misses her. Every day.
“Just say when, I’d play again”: never letting him down. Never. Just waiting to see him. To play with him as children.
“He was my best friend, down at the sandlot”: they’re childhood friends, childhood lovers, they were best friends before lovers.
“I felt more when we played pretend, than with all the Ken’s”: he is her special person. Her love. So whatever, even if she had the galas for her lists, she feels more with him. Even though they couldn’t get married.
“Cause he took me out of my box, stole my tortured heart”: Brant loved her too. I think he fell first, she fell harder. But he loved her. They had love.
“Left all these broken parts”: as long as they were together, till the last day, it was ok. It would be fine. The broken pieces and the sadness could be forgotten.
“Told me I’m better off”: when he tries to dissuade her to continue. Tries to push her away.
“But I’m not”: without him she doesn’t live. But with him, she died…
