Natalie Portman and Billy Crudup in Jackie (Pablo Larraín, 2016)

I will give the benefit of the doubt to director Pablo Larraín (born in Chile in 1976) and screenwriter Noah Oppenheim (born in 1978) and assume that they didn't know what a thudding sentimental cliché ending Jackie with a reprise of the title song from Lerner and Loewe's musical Camelot would seem to those of us who actually lived through the Kennedy years and experienced the assassination and extended period of mourning that followed. Back then, you couldn't avoid Camelot allusions, even when we were fully aware of the shortcomings of JFK and the Cold War mentality, especially that of his "best and brightest" who were about to lead us into the Vietnam quagmire. Even as early as June 1964, reporter Tom Wicker was trying to evoke a less sentimental vision in his Esquire piece titled "Kennedy Without Tears." This absence of real historical context is a blemish on a well-meaning and sometimes very good film. The very good part is the heroic effort of Natalie Portman to bring together a coherent portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy, a woman undone by grief but struggling to keep a family and a legacy together. The best scenes in the film are those in which Jackie, briefly obsessed with the history of American political assassination, waffles between giving JFK a funeral that would rival Abraham Lincoln's and her fears that her husband's assassination might be part of a larger plot. She chooses a grand procession in which she, members of the administration, and foreign dignitaries would walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to the church. Then, when Lee Harvey Oswald is gunned down, she calls the procession off and rages at her brother-in-law Bobby (Peter Sarsgaard) for having kept the news of Oswald's murder from her while she and her two small children were making a vulnerable public appearance. But then she changes her mind again, after LBJ's assistant, Jack Valenti (Max Casella), has already informed the foreign dignitaries, including the very difficult Charles De Gaulle, that there will be a motorcade instead of a walk. "I will march with Jack, alone if necessary," she tells Valenti. If the rest of Jackie were as good as these scenes, it would be a major achievement. Unfortunately, it's blurred by an unnecessary frame story in which she is interviewed by a journalist (Billy Crudup) and exercises an iron-willed control over what he will print, even as she spills the most intimate details of her experiences to him -- a way of launching flashbacks. There are too many lugubrious moments, scenes of Jackie wandering alone through the White House. There's also a rather sententious conversation with a priest (John Hurt) in which he and Jackie flirt with existentialist concepts of the meaning of life and death -- even Hurt, in one of his last film appearances, can't quite bring this one off. There's some miscasting, especially Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy, whom he neither looks nor acts like. But throughout it all, Portman skillfully evokes Jackie Kennedy in voice and manner without mimicry. I have to credit the producers for making a film with a powerful lead role for a woman, but Jackie Kennedy was a more interesting person than this segment of her life suggests. I'd like to see a fuller biopic, perhaps a TV miniseries, that takes in her reaction to her husband's well-known infidelities and carries her through the controversial marriage to Aristotle Onassis and the rest of the Kennedy tragedies. I'll bet Portman could play the hell out of the rest of Jackie Kennedy's life.

The embryo resembles a leech and later it resembles a ‘chewed substance’.

Filmbro Brainrot x Izzy Brainrot
To Izzy fans: something that will hopefully advance your brainrot
Beyond Fight Club & The Lighthouse & The Power of the Dog as Movies With Izzy Energy (all of which I recommend because my god the homoeroticism), may I also recommend the following:
Mean Streets (Martin Scorsese, 1973): this was Scorsese’s first collab with De Niro, and the movie that put him on the map, which automatically makes it worth viewing. Follows Harvey Keitel as Charlie, a low-level gangster whose uncle is a powerful mafia guy – but Charlie isn’t like that. He struggles with his masculinity and struggles to be a good man in a corrupt world (this movie is dripping with Catholic guilt b/c Scorsese). Charlie decides to be a good man by trying to save his best friend Johnny (De Niro) who is just a force of impulsiveness & chaos & is careening down a path of self-destruction. Charlie is dating Johnny’s cousin Teresa but, like, this man is so deeply repressed that he’s probably got more feelings for Johnny and is only dating Teresa b/c of her proximity to Johnny (or he’s bi and has feelings for both). Bonus points for Charlie connecting deeply with Westerns and also doing the thing Izzy does in OFMD where he holds his hand over open flames
Miller’s Crossing (The Coen Brothers, 1990): neo-noir film which follows Tom, the second-in-command to Leo, a powerful mob boss, sometime in the 1920s. Leo is in conflict with Caspar, a rising mob boss, because Caspar wants to whack Bernie, a bookie who’s screwed him over one time too many. Leo won’t whack Bernie because he’s the brother of Verna, who Leo currently has major feelings for (and who Tom is also sleeping with for *spice*). It’s up to Tom to navigate the complex gangland political sphere in order to make sure that Leo remains in power. There’s a lot of complexity in this film but to put it simply: this movie hinges on two love triangles: Tom-Leo-Verna but also one between three men: Bernie, Mink (who works at a social club Leo owns), and Eddie Dane (Caspar’s second-in-command). Because there’s a canonically queer love triangle in this movie, that means the seemingly heterosexual love triangle can be played with and questioned. Basically all the conversations between Tom and Leo play out they’re like long-time lovers, with Tom acting as Leo’s caretaker because Leo’s grown far too used to his power and is gonna start a gang war if he isn’t careful. Tom takes like half a dozen beatings in this film, all for Leo’s benefit, even if Leo doesn’t realize it. Of course, because it’s noir and therefore hypermasculine Tom REFUSES to acknowledge his feelings and that’s actually a key theme in the film, the relationship between head and heart – if that doesn’t have Izzy Hands energy I don’t know what does.

From 1999 to 2001, Brooklyn-based conceptual artist Ellen Harvey executed the stealth intervention 'New York Beautification Project,' for which she painted 40 tiny oval oil landscape paintings directly onto existing graffiti sites throughout the city, inspiring small, unexpected moments of joy for anyone who happened to be paying attention at, say, 103 Franklin Street between Church Street and West Broadway in January of 2001—the site and date of the first two photographs in this series. “This was the second time that I made a painting based on Caspar David Friedrich’s painting of an oak tree,” Harvey writes. “The first version in SoHo got covered by graffiti the day after I finished it, which made me sad because I had liked it a lot. Unfortunately, I never liked this second version as much. Maybe because it had lost the charm of novelty. Or maybe the lost first version was just better.… While I was painting here, a man came up to me and asked me to sign his portfolio. He thought that my signature might be valuable someday. His portfolio was made out of plastic, so my signature wouldn’t stick. I ended up signing his subway map in oils instead. This building finally got renovated and the painting is gone now.” Documented in this reprint of the sold-out first edition are both the works themselves and Harvey's diaristic accounts of painting illegally throughout the city. The narrative of her “beautification project” is both provocative and hilarious. It touches on such issues as who is allowed to make art in our society, and what distinguishes art from graffiti, while never losing touch with the frequently comical reality of creating a contemporary art project on the streets of New York. at 6 40/60, tooK mr. webbe, and set off in a hacKney coach to Drury lane to see Freischütz – we got the 2nd bench of the right hand box next the front box, just above the dress-boxes, and saw remarKably well – these boxes, the dress ditto, and the next tier above us all 7/.[shillings] – the music certainly very singular and fine – the overture encored, and played twice – the 1st appearance of ‘Zamiel’, the devil, in his darK bricK red flowing mantle, hiding all the figure – has curling himself up into in it, and sinKing thro’ a trap-door was so inimitably done, it really seemed as if the evil one had first gradually shrunK to nothing and thus vanished one Knew not how – Caspar’s sitting the circle and forging the bullets, all hell let loose, and, at the close of the piece, his falling down, and Zamiels dragging him away to hell, horribly well represented, is altogether the most singularly terrific spectacle I ever saw, or heard of as introduced upon a stage – to this succeeded the musical drama of ‘Abou [Abu] Hasssan’, the music also by von weber – the story taKen from the Arabian nights’entertainments, and made a pretty spectacle – grand ballet in the 1st act – the dancing or the grace of the dancers far inferior to that in Paris – the dresses good – the house looKed clean and handsome – the large glass chandelier suspended from the top over the pit, and lighted with gas, magnificent –
on coming away, tooK a turn up and down the saloon – a very handsome and long room – recesses at each end, and tea to be had at both – mirrors between the pilasters on each side of the saloon – none but femmes galantes there – the room full of these and gentlemans – the ladies very civil – much quieter and more decorous than formerly – not many in the house tonight, but 1 or 2 very near us – § not to be Known but by the volumes spoKen by their eyes when met by those of gentlemans, and by their smile – In walKing the streets, the great sign is a white handkerchief peeping out a little from the top of a reticule – the old men much the worst – men of 60 or 70 do things young men would shudder at – when French men are asKed their opinion, said Mr. w-[Webbe], of our country women abroad, they shrug their shoulders, and say they seem what they are not – I owned there was often too much reason for this remarK – too many did abroad what they would not home – this is too true – witness the stories miss Harvey told me – from Mr Decussy and what I heard from Mrs B[arlow] etc.
