August Hope: 1, 2, 3, Let's Go!…Resurrections…Faith, Hope, and Love Never Fail, Have Never Failed, and Will Never Fail. They're Timeless… Part 7/10.
"I'm trying to get people to see that we are our brother's keeper. Red, white, black, brown or yellow, rich or poor, we all have the blues." - B. B. King
"At first, dreams seem impossible, then improbable, and eventually inevitable." - Christopher Reeve
10/10… Christopher D'Olier Reeve (September 25, 1952 – October 10, 2004) was an American actor, film director, author, and activist, best known for playing the title character in the film Superman (1978) and three sequels. "By the late 1970s, the masculine image had changed … Now it was acceptable for a man to show gentleness and vulnerability. I felt that the new Superman ought to reflect that contemporary male image." He based his portrayal of Clark Kent on Cary Grant in his role in Bringing Up Baby. After the screen test, his driver said, "I'm not supposed to tell you this, but you've got the part." Reeve used his celebrity status for several philanthropic causes. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he visited terminally ill children. He joined the board of directors for the worldwide charity Save the Children. In 1979, he served as a track and field coach at the Special Olympics. On May 27, 1995, Reeve broke his neck when he was thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia. The injury paralyzed him from the shoulders down, and he used a wheelchair and ventilator for the rest of his life. Reeve returned to creative work, directing In the Gloaming (1997) and acting in the television remake of Rear Window (1998). He also made several appearances in the Superman-themed television series Smallville, and wrote two autobiographical books, Still Me and Nothing Is Impossible. Over the course of his career, Reeve received a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Emmy Award, and a Grammy Award. Beginning in the 1980s, Reeve was an activist for environmental and human-rights causes and for artistic freedom of expression. After his accident, he lobbied for spinal injury research, including human embryonic stem cell research, and for better insurance coverage for people with disabilities. His advocacy work included leading the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and co-founding the Reeve-Irvine Research Center. Christopher Reeve died on October 10, 2004. (Wikipedia)

On Liebel Peak near Burton Mill adjacent to King Solomon's Ridge and Red Mountain.
Brave/Beloved People: The Liebel surname was created from a Germanic personal (first) name, in turn derived from the words "leud," or "liut," meaning "people," or "tribe" and "bald," meaning "brave;" or perhaps derived from the German word "lieb," meaning "beloved." (HouseofNames.com)
Habakkuk 2:1 I will stand on my watch, Take up my station at the post, And wait to see what He will say to me, What He will reply to my complaint.
Tucson and Phoenix anchor the Arizona Sun Corridor. The Arizona Sun Corridor, shortened Sun Corridor, is a megaregion, or megapolitan area, in the southern area of the U.S. state of Arizona. The Sun Corridor is comparable to Indiana in both size and population. The largest metropolitan areas are the Phoenix metropolitan area – Valley of the Sun, and the Tucson metropolitan area – The Old Pueblo. The Spanish name of the city, Tucsón is derived from the O'odham Cuk Ṣon meaning "(at the) base of the black [hill]", a reference to a basalt-covered hill now known as Sentinel Peak. Tucson is sometimes referred to as the Old Pueblo and Optics Valley, the latter referring to its optical science and telescopes known worldwide. Sentinel Peak is a 2,897 ft (900 m) peak in the Tucson Mountains southwest of downtown Tucson, Arizona, United States. The valley's first inhabitants grew crops at the mountain's base, along the Santa Cruz River.
In the 1910s, University of Arizona students used local basalt rock to construct a 160 ft (50 m) tall block "A" on the mountain's east face, near its summit, giving the peak its other name, "A" Mountain. The peak is part of a 272-acre (110 hectares) park, the largest natural resource park in the City of Tucson. The origin of the name Sentinel Peak, according to Leighton, "comes from the sentinel station and the sentinel stationed there." (Wikipedia)
Davis: "Son of David" Can't Buy Me Love was shot on location in Tucson, Arizona, at Tucson High Magnet School (then known as Tucson High School). The choreography is by Paula Abdul, who makes an uncredited appearance as a dancer. On a date where the main characters begin to bond, they jump the perimeter wall and explore the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group Aircraft Bone Yard on Davis–Monthan Air Force Base that contains 4,400 aircraft. Touchstone Home Entertainment released the film on VHS and DVD on August 14, 2002.
They weren't ready for it, but then they were. Because life is just a classroom and you have to believe in happy endings, new beginnings, "impossible" things, and the fact that the best people in life are free.
"It is impossible for emotion not to come on us in thinking of that time now flowed away." - Paul Cezanne

TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English): Page 1966 and 1967: 2 Chronicles 9:1 The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame, and came to Jerusalem to test solomon with hard questions, accompanied by a very large retinue, including camels bearing spices, a great quantity of gold, and precious stones. When she came to Solomon, she spoke to him of all that she had on her mind. 2 Chronicles 9:2 Solomon had answers for all her questions; there was nothing that Solomon did not know, nothing to which he could not give her an answer. 2 Chronicles 9:3 When the queen of Sheba saw how wise Solomon was and the palace he had built, 2 Chronicles 9:4 the fare of his table, the seating of his courtiers, the service and attire of his attendants, his butlers and their attire, and the procession with which he went up to the House of the Lord, it took her breath away. 2 Chronicles 9:5 She said to the king, "What I heard in my own land about you and your wisdom was true. 2 Chronicles 9:6 I did not believe what they said until I came and saw with my own eyes that not even the half of your great wisdom had been described to me; you surpass the report that I heard. 2 Chronicles 9:7 How fortunate are your men and how fortunate are these courtiers of yours who are always in attendance on you and can hear your wisdom! 2 Chronicles 9:8 Blessed is the Lord your God, who favored you and set you on His throne as a king before the Lord. It is because of your God's love for Israel and in order to establish them forever that He made you king over them to execute righteous justice." 2 Chronicles 9:9 She presented the king with 120 talents of gold, and a vast quantity of spices and precious stones. There were no such spices as those which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon-- 2 Chronicles 9:10 also, the servants of Huram and Solomon who brought gold from Ophir brought algum-wood and precious stones. 2 Chronicles 9:11 The king made of the algum-wood ramps for the House of the Lord and for the royal palace, and lyres and harps for the musicians, whose like had never before been seen in the land of Judah-- 2 Chronicles 9:12 King Solomon, in turn, gave the queen of Sheba everything she expressed a desire for, exceeding a return for what she had brought to the king. Then she and her courtiers left and returned to her own land.
"An' I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation The world's in trouble, there's no communication An' everyone can say what they wanna say It never gets better, anyway So why should I care about a bad reputation, anyway? Oh no, not me, oh no, not me I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation You're living in the past, it's a new generation An' I only feel good when I got no pain An' that's how I'm gonna stay" - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - "Bad Reputation"
Mt. Lemmon is 25 miles (40 km) north (by road) and over 6,700 feet (2,000 m) above Tucson in the Santa Catalina Mountains in the Coronado National Forest. Outdoor activities in the Catalinas include hiking, mountain biking, birding, rock climbing, picnicking, camping, swimming in mountain stream pools, sky rides at Ski Valley, fishing, and photography. In winter with enough snow, the sky ride converts back to skiing at the southernmost ski resort in the continental United States. Summerhaven, a community near the top of Mt. Lemmon, is also a popular destination. (Wikipedia)
Dyrehavsbakken (lit. 'The Deer Pasture's Hill'), commonly referred to as Bakken (lit. 'The Hill'), is an amusement park in Lyngby-Taarbæk Kommune, Denmark, near Klampenborg (Gentofte municipality), about 10 km (6 mi) north of central Copenhagen. It opened in 1583 (440 years ago) and is the world's oldest operating amusement park. With 2.5–2.9 million visitors per year, it is the second most popular attraction in Denmark, after the more widely known Tivoli Gardens amusement park. Unlike Tivoli, admission is free. The origins of Dyrehavsbakken can be traced back to 1583 when Kirsten Piil discovered a natural spring in what is now known as Jægersborg Dyrehave or Dyrehaven, a large forest park north of Copenhagen. Residents of Copenhagen were attracted to the spring water due to the poor water quality in central Copenhagen during this period. Many believed the natural spring to have curative properties, and therefore Piil's discovery drew large crowds, especially in the springtime. These large crowds attracted entertainers and hawkers, whose presence are the origins of the amusement park today. For a period the area that the spring was located on, was not open to the public due to it being on royal hunting grounds. In 1669, King Frederick III decided to set up an animal park in the area and his son, Christian V, extended the size of the park by 3-4 times after he became king in 1670. The area was named Jægersborg Dyrehave, its present name, in 1671. The park was off-limits to the general public under Christian V and this did not change until 1756, under Frederick V. Open to the general public once again, Dyrehavsbakken began to flourish. The entertainers, hawkers, and innkeepers returned to the area, and Bakken's growing reputation throughout Europe attracted other entertainers and artists, including Pjerrot, the clown who still is a fixture at the park today. Bakken continued to grow even throughout the Napoleonic Wars. Its popularity was later aided by easier accessibility due to the development of steamships (1820) and railroads (1864), as well as good publicity from poets and authors. Bakken is open daily from the end of March through the end of August. Entrance into the park area is free of charge, but rides and attractions require payment. Prices depend on the ride or attraction. Discounted coupons, wristbands, and season passes can also be purchased. (Wikipedia)

The Golden Years By Susan King
Tumblr media
Family dynamics change dramatically and often tragically as parents and grandparents grow older. Some children continue to love their parents in their senior years and care for them when they become infirmed. But others turn their back on their loved ones and forget to “honor thy father and thy mother.”
King Lear, one of William Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, explores this theme. The elderly King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. But he makes a fatal error when he tells his daughters that they must offer florid declarations of love in order to get the land.
The vile Goneril and Regan are effusive in their love and get part of the kingdom. But his beloved Cordelia, the only one who really loves Lear, refuses to be insincere and is disinherited. Lear learns quickly just how Goneril and Regan really feel about him when they go back on their promises to support him. Lear becomes mad as he wanders the land with his faithful Fool. And though he is reunited with Cordelia, it doesn’t end well.
This subject continues to be explored in literature, theater and feature films. In fact, there are three acclaimed films released this year that are all in awards consideration.
Netflix’s DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD is the unique, funny and poignant Sundance Award-winning documentary in which Kirsten Johnson attempts to cope with her sweet widowed father’s dementia by staging increasingly absurdist ways her father could die—body doubles did the stunts—and even stages a mock funeral so he can hear just how much people love him. Anthony Hopkins gives one of his most complex performances in the haunting film THE FATHER, which will be released this December, as a man descending down the rabbit hole of Alzheimer’s when his daughter (Olivia Colman) leaves him in a nursing home in London and moves to Paris to live with her new boyfriend.
Tumblr media
And then there’s Sophia Loren’s powerful turn in Netflix’s Italian-language drama THE LIFE AHEAD. The still stunning 86-year-old actress, who won the Best Actress Oscar of 1961 for Vittorio De Sica’s harrowing TWO WOMEN, plays Madame Rosa, a former prostitute living in Naples who is haunted by memories of the Holocaust. Madame Rosa has created her own family as a foster mother to a trio of children born of prostitutes, as well as a loyal, caring group of friends. THE LIFE AHEAD was a family affair for Loren. Her youngest son, Edoardo Ponti, directed and co-wrote this adaptation of a 1975 Romain Gary novel. He said in a recent interview that when they collaborate on a project, “We want to show the world the best of Sophia.” And he did.
There’s a good chance you haven’t heard of one of the most admired films dealing with old age, Leo McCarey’s MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW (’37). McCarey is best known for his zany Marx Brothers comedy DUCK SOUP (’33); THE AWFUL TRUTH (‘37), the hilarious screwball comedy for which he won the directing Oscar; the sentimental GOING MY WAY (‘44), which swept the Oscars; and the four-hankie weepie romance AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (‘57).
So, it’s hard to believe the same filmmaker made MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, a drama so powerful, well-acted and sad that it will stay with you forever. In fact, it may force you to look at the way you treat your ageing parents. Filmmakers such as Orson Welles once said of MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, “It would make a stone cry.” Jean Renoir, Ernst Lubitsch, Frank Capra, Delmer Daves and Bertrand Tavernier have championed the movie as well. And, it also inspired Yasujiro Ozu’s masterpiece TOKYO STORY (’53).
Tumblr media
In a 2010 piece he wrote for Criterion, Tavernier recalled seeing the film for the first time. “The screening remains one of the most powerful moments of the decade for me,” he noted. “The nearly miraculous way in which McCarey manages to avoid the bathos inherent in such a subject, steering clear of sticky pity, of condescension and moralizing sermons – it all transfixed me. It was as though an arrow had struck me and stayed vibrating in my heart. I’ve experienced the same feeling every time I’ve seen the film in the 40 years since.”
Beulah Bondi and Victor Moore give the performances of their storied careers as a longtime married couple who lose their home to a bank foreclosure. Though they have five children, none of their offspring are willing to take them together. So, Bondi goes to live with her son (Thomas Mitchell) where she keeps driving her daughter-in-law (Fay Bainter) and teenage granddaughter (Barbara Read) crazy. Moore doesn’t have it any better moving in with his hard-nosed daughter and lazy son-in-law. The couple reunite for one day in New York City and those scenes are a gut-punch of emotion. And unlike most Hollywood films of the day, it doesn’t end happily for the couple.
Paramount pleaded with McCarey to change the ending to something more upbeat. He refused. Despite good reviews, the film bombed at the box office. Paramount dropped him from their roster. So, he signed with Harry Cohn at Columbia where he made THE AWFUL TRUTH, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, which was nominated for six Oscars including Best Film, Best Actress and McCarey winning Best Director. But McCarey didn’t forget MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW during his Oscar acceptance speech. He opened it by saying: “Thanks, but you gave it to me for the wrong picture.”

5 Actionable Sunnah of the Prophet Backed By Science
By Truth Seeker Staff
Actionable Sunnah of the Prophet Backed By Science
We’ve all heard about scientific evidence in the Quran, where modern science has found scientific discoveries that have been revealed in the Qur’an 1, 400 years ago! Only now, scientists of the 20th and 21st centuries have found scientific facts that confirm revelations of the Quran from the origins of life, the sky, sun’s orbit, oceans, iron, the expanding universe and many more. If anything, these scientific pieces of evidence should strengthen one’s faith in Islam as the true faith.
So what about the Sunnahs of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)? He has been described as a walking Qur’an after all. For the devout Muslims, the Prophet is a role model and all his actions are to be followed and his manners to be imitated. So has the Prophet’s (PBUH) habitual actions (sunnah fi’lillyah) been confirmed by modern science too?
We did some research to find out. Due to time constraints, we’ve only limited our article to 5 actionable Sunnahs which we have found scientific studies confirming their benefits.
Why Emulate the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH)
“You have a good model in the Messenger of Allah for one who hopes for Allah and the Last Day.” [Al-Ahzab 33:21].
A role model is someone you would admire and would follow his actions, habits, and way of thinking. In this modern age, so many of us would cite successful businessmen, scientists or even celebrities as our role models, but the real role model recommended by Allah is none other than our beloved Prophet (PBUH). The great scholars of the past, such as Imam Nawawi, had even compiled books on the Prophet’s actions on eating, sitting, and sleeping in his famous book, Garden of the Believers, Riyadh u’Saliheen.
1 – Smile: The Sunnah and The Science
The Prophet (Pbuh) has been described as someone who would often smile. “I have not seen anyone who smiled more than The Prophet (PBUH)” (at-Tirmidhi)
A recent study at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Texas A&M found that simply smiling can make the person feel happier. The facial expression portrayed by the person impacts his emotions, so if you have a smile on your face, you will feel happier and if you have a frown on your face, you will feel angrier.
The Prophet (PBUH) encourages people to smile, as it is considered an act of charity (at-Tirmidhi)).
Another study found that when a person smiles at another person leads to a similar response. Really, when you smile at people, people will smile back at you. So smiling is also contagious!
2 – The Sunnah and the Science Eating While Sitting Down
The Prophet (Pbuh.) forbade us from drinking while standing. Qatadah reported: “We asked him: ‘What about eating?”‘ He said: “That is even worse, (or maybe he said) more detestable.” (Muslim)
Today, it is now common to see people walking whilst drinking and eating. We live in a fast pace world, and so time is saved when we walk and do other things. In the West, there are now cafes which offer standing room only for drinking and eating.
A recent study at the University of South Florida found that people who ate while standing did not enjoy their meal as much. They felt their food to be less tasty than compared to people who ate while sitting down. People who ate while standing also ate lesser amounts compared to those who ate while sitting. This is because the standing position created greater physical stress on the body, which led to decreasing sensory sensitivity.
There are also many other studies which have concluded that eating while standing up is bad for your health
3 – Fasting Regularly: The Science Behind the Sunnah
The Prophet (Pbuh) would often fast on Mondays and Thursdays (at-Tirmidhi) and recommended the fasting of Prophet Dawud (PBUH) (Bukhari) where fasting is done on alternate days.
This is now known as intermittent fasting and is practiced by health enthusiasts in the West, where food is not consumed for a period of 12-24 hours, followed by normal eating and the cycle then repeats.
Studies have shown that intermittent fasting can lead to health benefits such as weight loss, lowering type 2 diabetes and reducing neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson and stroke.
4 – The Sunnah of the Miswak – Dental Hygiene and Modern Science
The Prophet (PBUH) said: “If it were not that it would be difficult on my nation, then I would have ordered them to use the Siwak for each prayer.” (at-Tirmidhi)
Even 1,400 years ago, Islam showed the importance of body hygiene with the wudhu’ and dental hygiene by using the Miswak to clean the teeth.
In today’s modern age, we now use toothbrush and toothpaste to maintain dental hygiene. The Miswak is often dismissed as just a twig, an old-age tool. But is it really?
The Miswak vs The Toothbrush
Norms would have it that the toothbrush and the toothpaste are superior in protecting our teeth when compared to a traditional, centuries-old tool, the Miswak. Nonetheless, there have been many studies to compare the effectiveness of the Miswak against the toothbrush in today’s society to confirm or dismiss such norms. So which is better?
A study had found that using the Miswak lowered gingival bleeding when compared to toothbrush users. Another comparison study of Miswak vs toothbrush found that using the Miswak leads to reduced dental plaque and gingivitis. Another comparison study also found that using Miswak reduces dental caries when compared to using toothbrushes and toothpaste.
The Miswak, also known as Salvadora persica chewing stick in scientific communities has special properties: antibacterial compound, known as BICT which is found in certain plants. When the Miswak is mixed with the saliva, this antibacterial compound is released, according to this study. However, the amount of the antibacterial compound decreases gradually if the same piece of Miswak is used several times. Hence, the study recommends that the Miswak is cut prior to each use to ensure the freshness of the twig and new antibacterial compound is released at each teeth-cleaning session. Does this mean that you should ditch the toothbrush? Not necessarily.
Remember the path of moderation. While the Miswak has great benefits, so too does the toothpaste and toothbrush. The best practice would be to use the Miswak prior to the 5 obligatory prayers, just as The Prophet (Pbuh) has recommended, and of course, to continue with the toothbrush each morning and night.
5 – Sleeping Positions: The Sunnah and the Science
The Prophet (Pbuh) used to sleep with a sleeping position on the right side (Bukhari). He also forbade people from sleeping on the stomach (Abu Dawud). A study has found that sleeping on the side positions has benefits of reducing the chances of developing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases.
Sleeping on the belly is harmful as research has shown that sleeping on the stomach for babies can lead to Sudden Death Syndrome (SIDS). Another study found that sleeping on the front causes children to grind their teeth when sleeping.
Reviving the Sunnah
As Muslims, our ultimate goal is to reach Jannah (paradise) and the ways to get there are plenty. Reviving the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) is one such way. Allah has stated that he is the best role model, and what better ways to follow than The Prophet’s way. If anything, these scientific studies have shown that Islam is the truth, in the Qur’an and even in the manners and habits of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
For how could an illiterate man (Prophet Muhammad PBUH) who lived 1,400 years ago have known about his sayings and actions have scientific benefits, if not for the One True God guiding him?

Gruppo Gamma is a Singapore-based watch company I have followed since they started out in 2013. Their first watch was the Genesis, which is a homage to the 1950’s Rolex Reference 6152 which was made for Panerai. Using a basic Seagull movement and mineral crystal, this was an OK place to start out. The Genesis was greatly improved in 2014 when they upgraded the movement to a more reliable Japanese movement and sapphire crystal. In 2015 they released the Vanguard. The Vanguard has a bronze case, sandwich dial, and a rotating bezel. Their latest release is the Divemaster series, and I was able to get my hands on one.
The Gruppo Gamma Divemaster is offered in four models. All models are three-handers. The D-01 is is stainless steel case with silver second hand; the D-01R swaps in a red second hand. The D-02 is the same as the D-01 but with date. I was able to spend time with the fourth model, the D-01N, which is all black.  Let’s break this thing down.
The Dial
This has a very nice sandwich dial with C3 luminescent markers and numbers shining from below the upper surface of the dial. The dial face itself is matte black. All three hands carry the same lume, with the red second hand adding a nice contrast to the black dial. Topping it all off you have a double-domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the underside.
The Case
This is a stainless steel case with a DLC (diamond-like carbon) treatment on the case and the screw-down crown. This is a hefty case coming in at 44mm wide, 52mm in length, and 14m thick. Weighing in at 146g, this has a heavy feel on this wrist, something  I rather like. Along with the stainless steel case back, the watch caries a depth rating of 300 meter. AKA, this is a watch that can do some serious diving. Of note, this is the first case from Gruppo Gamma that comes with a helium escape valve (more on that in a bit).
The Bezel
Pictures do not do justice to the look of this bezel. This is a 120 click, unidirectional bezel with a sapphire crystal insert.  Movement of the bezel is tight and has absolutely no play – a major improvement from their prototype. The lumed sapphire bezel insert is a great touch to this watch that simply looks amazing.
The Straps
This watch came with a leather and rubber strap. The leather strap is very soft and comfortable from day one. The rubber strap is think and bit hard to get on but for diving this is a very good strap. I can see the leather being used as my regular daily wear and the rubber strap mainly used for diving.  As for diving this is a long strap which is great when needing to fit over the dive suit. I was able to fit this over my think neoprene dive glove with no problem. They both had the same buckle with their logo etched into it.
The Movement
All Divemaster models come with the Seiko NH35A, 21600bph, 24 jewel movement.  This is basic but reliable movement with automatic bi-directional winding, hand-windable, and hacking seconds.
That Helium Escape Valve
Ok so why in the hell would you need a helium escape valve? You don’t.  Unless you are a “saturation diver”.   So what are Saturation divers?  They are the only divers that can really use this. They basically live on the ocean bottom for many days – or even a week at a time – hundreds of feet down. At that depth our beloved oxygen can actually kill you. To survive, you must replace most of that oxygen with helium. At depth, those tiny helium molecules make their way into your nice watch.  Then, when you ascend to normal pressure the little helium molecules get bigger (less pressure, you see).  If it weren’t for the HEV, they would be trapped – at least until the crystal blows off the watch. Although you may never need to use it, some will and it’s just one of those things that are almost a standard option on dive watches these days.
Gruppo Gamma has really come up with a good one here. Think this is really good diver. I tried to find faults with this but with the exception of a very basic movement, everything is very well done. There is nothing out of place or looks unfinished. The watch is very comfortable to wear all day long. The domed crystal adds character and the sapphire bezel adds a bit of class to this watch. For $519 I feel its a reasonable price for what you get. You can check them out at gruppogammawatches.com.

Mad About Fredric March by Jill Blake
As a self-certified Fredric March-ologist ™, you can probably imagine how pleased I was when I learned that the primary subject of my very niche interests would be the Star of the Month for March on TCM. While this isn’t March’s first time in the spotlight on TCM (he received a 24-hour salute during the network’s annual Summer Under the Stars festival in 2009 and was honored again as the Star of the Month in October 2010), this month-long tribute is certainly overdue. And why is that? Well, in the last few years, there has been renewed interest in many of the deeper cuts and hard-to-find films—not just Fredric March’s filmography, but classic film in general—as TCM, various home video distributors and streaming services have made these films available to the public—many of them for the first time in decades. For example, William Wyler’s THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (’46)—a film considered one of the greatest of all-time—was unavailable on home video and was rarely shown on TCM until a few years ago. As these films are made available to viewers, from seasoned cinephiles to a brand-new generation of movie lovers, there is ample opportunity to introduce an actor’s body of work.
Tumblr media
While he doesn’t garner the same recognition today as his peers such as Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant or Clark Gable, March was one of the most popular stars in Hollywood, especially throughout the 1930s and 1940s. And even when his “matinee idol” status cooled a bit in the late 1930s, March was regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, earning a total of five Academy Award nominations for Best Actor throughout his long career (which spanned an impressive five decades) and winning two for his performances in DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (’31) and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (’46). March was also an accomplished actor of the stage, working frequently with his wife, actress Florence Eldridge. March was in the original Broadway productions of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth; Paul Osborn’s A Bell for Adano; Ruth Gordon’s Years Ago; and Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. He won two Tony awards for Lead Actor for Years Ago and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and he is the only actor to win two Academy Awards and two Tony awards for acting.
March is also one of the few Hollywood actors to successfully transition from leading man/matinee idol to more character-driven, supporting roles. After his work in THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, March’s career shifted, in-part due to his choice to return to the stage after the devastating effects of the House on Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and the resulting Hollywood blacklist. While March and his wife were never fully blacklisted, their known involvement with progressive causes—from their support of the anti-nationalist Republicans fighting in the Spanish Civil War to the Screen Actors Guild—led to the red-baiting magazine Counterattack printing a smear campaign of the couple. This prompted the Marches to file a libel suit, which they won.
Tumblr media
But their troubles were far from over, as they were also named as being members of the Communist party by an anonymous source, creating havoc in both their personal and professional lives. And while they never completely lost out on work, their careers suffered a terrible hit. Never attracted by the flashiness of Hollywood or stardom, March persevered and proved his worth as a serious actor, regardless of the size of the role. When asked about fame, March famously quipped:
Stardom is just an uneasy seat on top of a tricky toboggan. Being a star is merely perching at the head of the downgrade. A competent featured player can last a lifetime. A star, a year or two. There's all that agony of finding suitable stories, keeping in character, maintaining illusion. Then the undignified position of hanging on while your popularity is declining.
March knew when his time at the top was at an end, and he adjusted his expectations to find the best available outlet for his immense talent. That can’t be said for the many Hollywood stars who clambered to their fading status instead of gracefully accepting the inevitable. This is why March is considered by many to be a “true actor’s actor.”
Tumblr media
Since Fredric March’s tribute is taking place throughout the month of March, I thought it would be fun to tie it in with another one of my loves: college basketball. I’ve created a Fredric March Insanity Tournament of Films™ bracket including all of the titles in his Star of the Month lineup, with a few additional films not airing on TCM in March to fill out 32 spots. The films are divided into two main categories: 16 films made in the 1930s and 16 from the 1940s-1970s. I’ve split those two main categories in half and “seeded” them—there are eight seed positions in each quadrant of the bracket (top left, bottom left and top right, bottom right). The seeds are based on my own personal rankings and …well, I had to make some tough decisions. Yes, that means I had to pit SEVEN DAYS IN MAY (’64) against EXECUTIVE SUITE (’54), and DESIGN FOR LIVING (’33) against NOTHING SACRED (’33). And, gulp…THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES against DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE. It killed me and yes this is my ghost writing this article. But I am happy with my decisions and I completely stand by my winner of the tournament and welcome any and all criticisms, which I assume will be legion. And, I welcome you all to fill out your own Fredric March Star of the Month tournament brackets and then show me how I’m wrong and you’re right. (Opinions only shared with love, of course.)
But most importantly, I hope you all tune-in to TCM for this incredible Star of the Month tribute to Fredric March, filled with beloved classics and rare gems. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
