And Tony's good at keeping secrets... or so he thinks. But maybe Steve knows him better than he knows himself. And just because Tony believes something, that doesn't make it the truth.

The absolute last thing Steve's expecting is Tony Stark, and so it's fairly in character for the man to be standing on the other side of the door. "Hi." Tony looks impatient, greeting barely out before he's walking past Steve and into the apartment.

Cap-Ironman Rec Week - Absolute Faves Monday

It’s that lovely time of year again! I’ve taken the ‘absolute’ part of absolute faves very literally, and basically gone back in time to the fics that first made me fall in love with Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. Most of these might come as no-brainers to a lot of the fandom, and have been incessantly recced in the past, but hopefully might come as a delightful surprise to anyone who found this amazing ship in the past few years only. Enjoy! Team Building Activities by valtyr Fury's a beautiful princess. Clint's plotting a Communist revolution. Rhodey's not sexy. Wall-E's not a documentary. Clint's not gay but he does give a great blowjob. This fic is not an AU. Notes: Reading that summary gives me a hit of nostalgia like nothing else. This fic features some of my favourite Tony characterisation of all time - just the way he loves and expresses that love and it makes me giggle and groan and just the whole gamut of emotions. Plus the added factor of being an MCU fic that’s actually pre-2012 Avengers, and just - sold. A thousand times over.

A Partial Dictionary Of The 21st Century By Captain Steve Rogers, US Army by copperbadge Steve is adapting well to the new millennium, and he has the dictionary to prove it. Notes: Favourite, favourite, favourite Steve character study. This fic is what the   Steve Rogers and the 21st Century tag seems to be meant for, and I absolutely adore it.

Double Time by sineala Cassino, Italy, December 1943. Special Agent Tony Stark, former Marvels adventurer, is sent to investigate a Cosmic Cube found by the Invaders -- and it's the perfect opportunity for him to rekindle his secret romance with Steve Rogers. But when Hydra attempts to steal the Cube, an inadvertent wish for help leads to the appearance of a Tony from the future of another world: Director Stark of SHIELD. This Tony is a man with a lot on his mind. He refuses to tell them anything about the future, but he seems to know much more than he should about Captain America. And something's happened that's clearly killing him inside, but he's not talking. When Director Stark's failed attempt to return home leads to the unexpected appearance of another visitor from his universe, all the lies come undone. Now there are two wars to fight, and the second one could ruin all of them. Notes: I have one hundred percent recced this fic before, and have no regrets. 616 civil war was what got me, really and truly, into SteveTony as a pairing that could wreck my heart, and this fic is my go-to to address and assuage all those angsty feelings.  Ready, Fire, Aim by gyzym There's no "I" in "Avenger." Notes: Mark this one down as another classic, seminal fic I read when first getting into this delightful ship. Banter, conflict, team-building, love - it has it all <3

A Higher Form of War by sabrecmc Tony is a King with a surprising number of people out to kill him. Steve and the rest of the Avengers are fighting for Pierce's rebellion and end up with Tony as their prisoner. Oops. Basically one of those bodice-ripping romance novels I don't read (ahem) but with far more gay. Notes: A high fantasy AU that somehow echoes the canon arcs that Tony and Steve’s characters go through? I love the nuances in this one, their flaws and their foibles, and yet coming out with some cheer-out-loud moments that I’ll honestly remember forever. Love the plottiness, love the ensemble cast, love everything. America Isn’t Chicken by Amuly After a Civil War, death, rebirth, a takeover by Osborn, brain deletion, and the fall of Asgard, Steve and Tony might just be starting to get back on solid ground with one another. Things aren't perfect, not yet, but they can be in the same room as each other without resorting to violence, and they've even managed to share a smile or two. Seems like the perfect time, then, for Tony to try and fuck it all up with a stupid game of gay chicken.Meanwhile, as if he didn't have enough to worry about, Tony realizes some kind of supervillainous trouble is brewing when increasingly advanced armors start popping up all over Manhattan, looking strangely reminiscent of his tech. On the other side of the world, Steve gets news that Zola is on the move in Russia, with some sort of nefarious plan at work.Which will ruin them first? Will it be this unknown armored villain who is after Tony's tech? Or will it be Zola unleashing his mysterious plan on the world? Or will Steve and Tony prove to be their own worst enemies, destroying the tentative truce they managed to forge with their own stubbornness? Notes: Have you ever wanted a really well-plotted and thought out fic that also, somehow, revolves around gay chicken? Then this fic is one for you. Bond Has It Covered by sara_holmes Tony thought they had trouble getting along when they were dealing with a major global crisis. Apparently that had nothing on how they fell apart when they weren't distracted by smashing aliens. Notes: I love it when characters start out so incredibly at odds with each other, and then move naturally and beautifully to a place of support and love. Be it with Steve and Tony’s romance, or the Avengers as a team, this fic accomplishes that journey so, so very well. Some Things Shouldn't Be a Chore by scifigrl47 Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick. And some things shouldn't be a chore. Notes: This list would be incomplete without a fic by scifigrl47. This entire fic series is golden, MCU Tony’s voice is spot on, and just that perfect blanket of nostalgia for 2012-era domestic Avengers fic when you’re looking for something to re-read for the fifty seventh time.  Love Across The Multiverse by sineala Mojo presents: Love Across the Multiverse! In tonight's episode, a battle-hardened supersoldier finds himself drawn to his handsome, genius teammate! It's an agonizing duel between his long-held beliefs and the secret passions of his heart! Will true love conquer all? There's only one way to find out! Don't miss the highlight of the season!(Viewer discretion is advised. Mojoworld residents who do not vote for their favorite participants of the season will be summarily sent to the arena. All hail Mojo.) Notes: I love Ults Steve. This fic is just so much, genuine fun in a wacky scenario featuring a character arc for Steven across a sex scene, basically. I love how Tony and his considerate, big heart comes across despite being viewed through a slightly unreliable lens and just... love all around, really. A Fistful of Steves: This Town Ain't Big Enough by Raikishi, teaberryblue When Tony Stark takes a bullet intended for Steve Rogers, he wakes up in a world entirely peopled by alternate incarnations of everyone's favorite Star-Spangled Man. Welcome to Stevechester, Population: Steve Words by teaberryblue, art by Raikishi Notes: Before there was the Spiderverse, there was this magnificent fic, and Tony’s gobsmacked reactions to finding out just how many Steves across the multiverse thought very affectionately of their Tony’s.  Strobelight Serenade by panicandstartariot The Avengers get shanghaied into chaperoning a high school prom. In Steve's opinion, things go downhill from there, but Tony's determined to save the night. With the Macarena. Notes: Yes, this is about Steve’s complicated emotions about dancing, and his man out of time feels, and Tony swooping in to do something horrifically nice, and sometimes you just need to go with the classics, okay <3333 The (Not Really) Secret Origins of Movie Night by nightwalker Somewhere along the line the Avengers have become a pretty good team. But Tony's still the odd man out, and Steve's determined to change that. Notes: I don’t have any hard evidence to prove that this fic was, in fact, the origin of the Avengers Movie Night to be memorialised in thousands of fic for years to come, but man is it wonderful either way. Love Steve being an empathetic team leader and a good friend. Resurrection, Reconstruction & Redemption by  Elspethdixon, Seanchai Doom brings Steve back from the dead. Hijinks ensue, some of which might vaugely be considered plot. Notes: The OG. The fic that seemingly started it all, that I’ve gone back to again and again, and if there’s any diehard Stony fan out there that somehow, miraculously, hasn’t read this fic despite its wide impact, then I urge you to run now and gobble it up. And that’s it! I can think of fifty other fics that I would put on the list, but I’ve gotta draw a line somewhere, so go forth! Read and comment and keep the love for Stony alive <3

This fic is a love letter to Italy and I'm hanging onto each word down to the proverbial postscript. THE reconciliation fic. Crazie to realise how long ago CA:CW and the accompanying fandom wankery was, but this fic is the gift that keeps on giving.

HUGE fic. Worth every word. Coffee, Star Trek, world-building. Oof. This fic has it all. It packs a punch. A spiked punch. You'll be tipsy and dancing with your crush in no time.

"A Cabin in the Woods" by nightwalker

It was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, a chance for them to spend some time as a couple and work out some of the kinks in their relationship. That was before everything got weird.

Horror junkie here and yeah, um, the best horror fic ever. I ate this up and would eat it up again. The tension is inescapable and the writing is superbly subtle. Genuine mastery of the form.

The day after Pepper's funeral - after Rhodey has come and gone, after Natasha has come and gone, after Tony has forcibly sent Happy away - Tony looks out of the front window, Morgan snoozing in the crook of one arm, and sees a dark, heavily-tinted car in the driveway.

The perfect, the perfect Endgame fix-it. There's a certain kind of magic in this story that I don't think I've found in any other stevetony fic to date. This fic is heartbreak and grief and guilt and friendship and romance all rolled into one indescribably lovely story.

Cap-Ironman Rec Week - Hidden Gems Saturday

This list was a pleasure to write up, especially having the chance to rediscover some fics that I’d loved but misplaced over the years. Wonder if it says something that the angst-to-fluff ratio is as skewed as it is :D  All of Your Lonely Sieges by WhenasInSilks Steve and Tony are stranded in the wilderness. Things go downhill from there. The story of thirty-six hours. Notes: I’m always a sucker for Ultimates fic. Steve has to take care of a Tony going into violent withdrawal and the emotional clash between him trying to give Tony what he needs versus Tony trying to cling to some semblance of a mask makes for extremely compelling reading. And the Wind Blows Cruel by dirigibleplumbing Tony’s alone at the compound with nothing but a blizzard to keep him company. Then, for the first time since he received it, the flip-phone rings. After all this time, Steve’s calling… but all he does is sing a morbid old song about freezing to death. Tony quickly learns why the topic is on Steve’s mind. Notes: I don’t read a whole lot of CACW-era fic, but this one leapt out of the pack for me. The scene setting is beautiful and haunting, Tony and Steve’s reactions utterly believable, and it’s less about hashing out the past than just keeping each other company and helping out in this moment in time. america's pastime by JenTheSweetie The thing about the Annual Intra-Avengers Baseball Game was that it was always a little... contentious. Notes: This feels like one of those fics that would’ve been written in 2014 and should’ve racked up a 4-digit plus kudos count by now, which is why I double-taked at the 2020 publish date. It’s domestic, it’s fluffy, it’s Avengers playing baseball and being shits about it, what else could we possibly want <3 Cold Front by Sineala When Tony started drinking again, no one could find him. And then Steve found him. Tony was standing on a corner near Times Square, living on the streets, selling his body to any man who walked by, so he could have enough money to keep buying liquor. It's going to be a cold, cold winter; there's a disease that's killing the men who do exactly what Tony's doing; and if neither of those two things end Tony's life first, Tony's going to drink himself to death. Tony's made a lot of mistakes, and Steve blames Tony for all of them. Almost all of them. The fact that Steve paid Tony over a thousand dollars to sleep with him... well, Steve has only himself to blame for that one.  Notes: The fact that I’ve got a Sineala fic on this list, and that it doesn’t have five times the kudos it does, is staggering to me. The imagery in this is impeccable, the dark mood Steve’s in combined with the subway ride in the middle of the night, creating this unreal miasma that is so easy to lose yourself in. Just some absolutely stunning writing. To Dwell on Dreams by fandomfrolics A series of increasingly vivid dreams prompt Tony Stark to move back to New York City after ten years, much to the excitement of the press. Steve Rogers, ex-soldier and popular political cartoonist, is not quite as thrilled. After he publishes an unflattering cartoon of the reclusive billionaire, he's granted exclusive access to do an in-depth piece on the person nobody's heard from in the last ten years. Notes: Not a ‘hidden’ gem as much as a plotty fic that could always do with more love. The premise is intriguing, the mystery of what exactly is going on set up really nicely, and I love fics with Steve and Tony meeting for the first time... or have they? ;)  Tra Voi, Tra Voi (The Getting Together Remix) by haemodye Tony's gonna kill Rogers for making him go out in this blizzard. That is, if he can find the damn man. Notes: 1872 fic! This is the second ‘Tony finds Steve in a blizzard’ fic in this list, because I sometimes have simple needs. Love the relationship dynamics here, the dialogue, the scene setting... if you know anything about 1872 canon then you know that warm H/C in this verse is just the most blessed thing. The Culling of the Stars by dirigibleplumbing Tony dies saving Steve's life on the courthouse steps. Now Steve is left with the fallout of their Civil War, expected to take charge and preserve Tony's legacy. He doesn't know how he can do it alone—not when he can't stop thinking about Tony, or keep track of the days, or even feel. Notes: 616! Civil War AU. This fic traces out a journey of grief that Steve takes, using themes from an old sci fi novel that he liked to read. While there is a happy ending and the character death temporary, what it takes to get to that point is as heart breaking as it is beautifully written and constructed.  And that’s all for the day! Please do go and shower these fics with some much deserved love and attention, it’s what makes this lovely fandom go round :)

Cap-IM Rec Week - Day 7

Today’s list is short--it’s highlighting work you wouldn’t normally give a chance to, and that’s pretty rare for me. I give everything a shot because I’m a greedy whore when it comes to Stevetony. But here are two works that standout and that I thoroughly loved. I’ve really enjoyed @cap-ironman Rec Week--if you’re looking for more recs, check out @stevetonyweekly where I post all the Stevetony content I read each week. 

Tiny Spy Assassin Steve by copperbadge

An AU in which Steve Rogers was born into the modern day and never received the Serum, but managed to make it into SHIELD as a handpicked protege of senior field agent Abraham Erskine. Along with Phil Coulson, Clint Barton, Natasha Romanoff, Peggy Carter, and eventually Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, Steve still tries to make a difference.

Particularly in the life of Tony Stark, who picked up what he thought was an art student in a bar, and ended up dating one of SHIELD's top agents...

I am EXTREMELY picky about pre-serum Steve fics and this one is just--fan-fucking-tastic.

Tony Stark resigned his commission in Starfleet five years ago, after a disastrous away mission, and he swore he'd never go back. He just wants to be left alone to build warp engines in peace. But the universe has more in store for him than that, as he discovers when Admiral Fury comes to him with an offer he could never have expected and cannot possibly refuse: first officer and chief engineer aboard the all-new USS Avenger, a starship of Tony's own design. What's more, the Avenger's captain is Steve Rogers, hero of the Earth-Romulan War. Believed dead for over a century, Steve is miraculously alive... and very, very attractive.

But nothing is ever easy for Tony. As he wrestles with his secret desire for his new captain and his not-so-dormant fears, another mission starts to go wrong, and Tony becomes aware that Steve has secrets of his own -- and the truth could change everything.

So this fic--podfic--deserves two spots on the list. First because I almost didn’t read it. Star Trek was the first media I can remember watching as a child (dear god, the nightmares from those fucking ear bugs) and it remains one of the nearest and dearest to my heart, so I’m extremely picky about crossovers--but I trusted Sine and it quickly became one of my favorite Trek fics, in or out of the fandom. I’m ALSO picky about podfic--I get very very little time for podfic and I’m super picky narrators on these kinds of things--audiobooks/podfics/podcasts--so I wasn’t sold on the idea, but I had a house to paint and a friend rec’ed it and omg, best decision ever. As emotional as the reading the fic made me, listening to the podfic was even more so. I love it to an unhealthy degree, honestly.

There's been a longstanding campaign by well-known and less-well-known dentists to delete this fic from the interwebs because of its devastating effect on readers' dental health. 'Nuff said.

“Steve,” Jan said slowly, “what did you think you were bidding on?” He could feel the heat of his blush creeping down his face and neck, and considering its intensity, he knew he was as red as a fire hydrant. “Uh,” he said for the second time in minutes. Or: Steve bids on Tony thinking Tony's auctioning off a date and gets something very different instead.

Steve may be the only white man underwhelmed by a wheel of cheese. And to that we all say: respect!

And there was next to zero chance Steve was going to buy it, but that wouldn’t stop him from trying. “Don’t worry about me, sugar plum. I’ve got this.” Tony tried to open his eyes again, as if to prove a point even though no one could see him. And oh, oh no, that was a mistake. Frantically, he grasped for the wastebasket, dry heaving into it. Oh, he did not have this. He did not have this at all. Tony underestimates the severity of one of his migraines, and pays for it.

I really don't use this word lightly so it's after carefully considering every angle that I bring it up here. This fic is: scrump-dilly-icious. Again, I don't use that word lightly. But this fic is. Scrumpdillyicious!
