The thing that really gets to my heart about how Laios’s autism is portrayed in his conflict with Toshiro is that his pain is centered and sympathized with.

How many dozens, hundreds of stories have we gotten about that obnoxious side character who just won’t take the hint and get lost, plaguing the main character who is never up front about their actual feelings but we’re supposed to relate to? How it’s played for humor half the time, a lighthearted burden on the main to make them roll their eyes before the Big Challenges of their story, with no thought to the pain and loss of the side character investing so much emotion into caring for someone who finds them a nuisance?

I think it’s even more poignant that Ryoko Kui is writing from a Japanese perspective that puts Toshido’s approach even more in the default, culturally enforced norm, but still asks “what about the feelings of the person who doesn’t have that all-important knack for ‘reading the room’ and picking up on all those invisible messages never said aloud?” and encourages us to care

Okay not to take his side or anything but the thing you need to understand about Toshiro (aka Shuro) is that he comes from this setting's analogue of Japan, which has a highly contextual culture that emphasizes polite indirectness. Its not uncommon for western allistic people not to understand that when a Japanese person expresses uncertainty about an offer or a request that they're actually politely saying no and other things like that

Like, it's okay to be frustrated with how he acts about Laios but you also need to understand its as much of a culture clash as it is also allistic vs. autistic communication styles

Listen, I totally agree that it’s super sad that it turned out Shuro had been annoyed by Laios the whole time he’d considered them to be friends. I get it! I’ve been in his shoes, I was the annoying friend.

But I think it’s also important to not ignore the feelings of Shuro, the one who was being annoyed, at the same time. It’s possible to acknowledge how both people felt without villainizing one of them.

I feel like when it comes to outsiders hearing about a fight two people had, they’ll do this thing where they take the side of whoever they feel most bad for or relate to the most and gang up on/ignore the reasons the other person has and it kind of sucks!

And the point Shuro makes about it being worse that Laios meant no harm is probably because it meant there was no reason for him to tell him to fuck off without looking like an asshole!!

There’s no reason to blame Shuro’s inability to communicate that he wanted space if you’re not going to do the same for Laios’s social blunders.
