How many ships, I wonder,

lay at the bottom of Cape Horn?

their wooden hulls in splinters,

their sails stained and torn,

the skulls of long lost sailors

whose descendants went unborn,

their wives and mothers weeping

forever wondering, forlorn.

And yet they kept on coming

like the sunrise every morn,

loathe to break some solemn oath

or mighty quest to scorn,

driven by the lure of fame

or pledge to country sworn,

but how much sorrow is enough

before a dream is worn?

This is an image of Cape Horn on Hornos Island. Located at the southern tip of South America, passage around Cape Horn is considered one of the most hazardous marine routes in the world. Hornos Island is also the site of the world's most southernmost tree, a Nothofagus betuloides.

I love this vibrant scene of sub-Antarctic moorland and Megallanic beech trees, their gnarly bare branches sculpted by the constant furious winds. It’s my last day on Hornos Island. We had endured climatic mood swings from icy gales, rain to brilliant sunshine - often within the space of 20-minute cycles. The expedition team were exhausted, hungry and jubilant. We had, after all, found the southernmost tree. I decided to take time to explore the scenery we trudged past as I followed the team on their primary mission in previous days. Now with the relief that we had accomplished what we had set out to do, I felt free to hunt for other types of photographic possibilities. Some of the landscape on Cape Horn reminds me of Cornwall in England. You’d expect to have a pleasant stroll through these pastel meadows, except the trees are sometimes hidden in creeks, making the ground appear flat until you disappear underneath it. Of course, falling is precisely what happened as I walked towards the lighthouse to catch my ride home. Somehow my widespread arms stopped me from dropping further through the brush into the running water below my dangling feet. Grabbing at vegetation gingerly, I crawled out. Half an hour later, I was in a zodiac riding out with the last of the team to our wooden boat, the Oveja Negra. Dit prachtige gebouw is te vinden in de Noord-Hollandse stad Hoorn. Het is een van de mooiste gebouwen opgetrokken in de bloeiperiode van de stad; de 16e en 17e eeuw toen Hoorn een van de belangrijkste steden van Holland was en daarmee van de gehele Nederlanden. Vanuit Hoorn kozen vele schepen de zee en de stad was belangrijk voor de WIC, VOC en de vaart richting de Oostzee. Hierdoor groeide de stad in deze periode enorm.
