Cairns being on batshit Auspol is so fucking insane to me. Living here I always feel like our existence isn't real to anyone outside of Cairns and then Holy Fuck Cairns is on FUCKING TUMBLR
November 2023: Cairns local government candidate and life coach Shane Cuthbert is forced to clarify that he is not a Nazi, after journalists notice the flag of Nazi-Germany appears prominently in the set dressing of a number of Cuthbert's life coaching videos.
Admitting that it was "not a good look" Cuthbert went on to explain "At the time, it was a shop that sold a bunch of old, cool stuff, and look I just thought it looked cool," before clarifying, "Not the flag. But just the background of the store and the colours and things like that."
Cuthbert apologised and told the national broadcaster that the videos had been removed from his YouTube channel, before being forced to apologise again, after the ABC pointed out there were still five videos featuring the flag on his channel, with Cuthbert calling it "another oversight".
An already infamous local figure, Shane's candidate website includes the clarification "... in the interests of transparency, I do have a criminal record and although it does not contain any serious offences, I have spent time in custody for breach of bail, evade police, resist arrest, drink driving, wilful damage and there are also entries for using an alias to book a flight in the name of Kermit Frog".
