Thinking about the way Mike looks at Will, especially when he's seeking comfort, ESPECIALLY in this first gif look at his goddamn eyes. But they do the same in the second it's just harder to see.

Then I noticed Mike doesn't just primarily initiate physical touch. He initiates everything. He even initiates eye contact.

Look closely. In all of these gifs, he looks first and Will follows.

Mike and Will are shown having several moments throughout the seasons where they simply stare at one another in silence - just taking each other in.

It’s something we also see pairings like Hopper and Joyce, Lucas and Max, and Jonathan and Nancy do.

It’s an intimate action and is a demonstration of trust by both parties. We don’t see platonic pairings having moments like this in the show because it is not a platonic gesture.

It’s romantic.

Unlike what much of the general audience believes, Mike and Will are not the exception. They are not being given these intimate moments, that are otherwise reserved for couples, because they are just especially close friends. They’re being given them because their relationship is just as romantic in nature as the other pairings pictured above.

Now that I think of it, all of their flirting is really just defined by that once simple thing: Mike watches for Will's reaction to what he says every time. And they don't end the scene until they've got back to his reaction to getting it every time.

It happens in the Crazy Together scene. It happens in the airport scene. It doesn't happen in the roller rink fight - he leaves after saying "let's just find her, okay?" without getting an "okay" back which is how you know that when it is there it means something. But it happens in the apology scene. It happens in the van scene.

He does it with things that should be rhetorical or final and things that should be casual- because they're not. Because he has a crush and everything matters and nothing is casual about how Will reacts to what he says. It is all to be closely observed and deeply analyzed late at night.

And now that I think about it, maybe they aren't interrupted. Maybe they never have been. Maybe Mike just says all he has to say and waits and watches for Will and nothing was interrupted because the conversation was over...he just didn't want it to be. Because yeah, 4x05, 4x08, and 4x09 are the only times he's actually cut off from saying things. Otherwise, he had nothing left on his tongue. He just didn't want to be done and he hoped Will didn't either. So he watched to check. And when Will broke eye contact, he broke eye contact, because then it was over. But never before. He would never be the one to end it and he would never be the one to stop collecting data to overanalyze.
